Part 2 is here!

Hope you caught Part 1 ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The second half of the discussion w/ Omnicom 's TMA (The Marketing Arm), teacher, and author: Veronica Appleton, Ph.D. aka 'Episode 25 of the Oh Hello, Inc. pod' digs deep on:

-personal reflection --> pebbles to rocks to glaciers
- #mentorship, sponsorship, championship, #advocacy

Mentors that have made a big impact on this 'Hello':
Veronica's mother- Cynthia Clark

Renetta McCann- mom, wife, and powerhouse in the #advertising industry. She has never given up on advancing equity, within an industry, that was built to reflect the needs and wants of black and brown people.

Jason DaWayne Smith- a father, a wonderful human, an advocate, a resource to many, a supporter and absolute leader. (DISCLAIMER: Jason is a close friend and I couldn't agree more w/ this statement!)

Lizette Williams- a glacier in the industry, a mom, and able to juggle so much

Jay-Z- career trajectory, climb, and hunger (on a public mentorship level)

Personal Reflections Since 9-11 and Pandemic

00:00:42
Speaker
The last note that I'll make, I had a conversation with one of my mentees last week.
00:00:48
Speaker
who is a young man who's a creative for one of the largest firms in the industry. And he said, you know, Veronica, my birthday's coming up and I have been in heavy reflection. And I said, well, you know, you've already been kind of heavy of a reflector anyway. That's just your personality. But I think that many of us are intentionally more reflective than we have been
00:01:14
Speaker
in the past. And what I mean by that is prior to the pandemic, prior to 2020, or I could even go back to 9-11 if we wanted to go back further than that. Around 9-11, we changed just as humans. We lost a lot of lives. We were impacted in a big wave just globally by what happened. I think you fast forward to a few years later, the pandemic 2020.
00:01:42
Speaker
You are not the person that you were prior to the pandemic. You are not the same person that you were during the pandemic. You're not even the same person who you were after the quote unquote pandemic, which in many ways is still going. And then also you're not the same person that you were in 2022 either. So

Personal Growth and Mentorship

00:02:05
Speaker
even if we just really label ourselves and think critically about the transitions of our evolution,
00:02:12
Speaker
We are not the same and we're not the same as what we previously were. We're growing, we're changing, and we're creating more of a path for real success that looks good to us and not looks good to the public or to peers or to family. When you customize that environment that really works for you, that's when you're able to
00:02:41
Speaker
take out the beauty of sponsorship and mentorship and championship and advocacy and really finding those spaces that can just design it specifically for you. So I know that was a long answer, but it just kind of made sense to me to maybe go over that question. That was deep. It was profound.
00:03:06
Speaker
It was a lot to unpack, but it was so important and just resonated so well for where I'm sitting too, just in terms of someone who historically used to be, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. Couldn't sit still. Still have a hard time sitting still, but.
00:03:24
Speaker
Nonetheless, the vulnerability component of and sharing what you shared is so valuable and we appreciate it. And thank you. I want to

Influence of Family - Tribute to Cynthia Clark

00:03:33
Speaker
hit on one last point before we end this. And that would be who are some mentors that have played a big role and made a big impact on you and your career. Yeah. Am I, am I allowed to say names? Absolutely. Please do. Yes. So, you know, I was asked this, I am often asked this question.
00:03:54
Speaker
I literally don't even have enough time to say how many people I have been inspired by. May make a suggestion. May make a suggestion. If there's not enough time, we can tag all of your mentors because that just makes them feel good too. Yeah, so there's a really awesome woman who lives in the city of Chicago, and that's my mom.
00:04:24
Speaker
Her name is Cynthia Clark. She is just a rock star. I think that she took pebbles and just made some solid rocks, glaciers, just all sorts of stuff. I don't know. I just feel like she doesn't get enough credit. I'm like, what else can I do? You're never able to pay back.
00:04:51
Speaker
the person that created you and especially if you have a really great relationship too. And I am aware that that many people don't have those types of relationships with their parents or their guardians, but I do and I'm so grateful for it.

Impactful Mentors in Career Journey

00:05:06
Speaker
So she is one extraordinary woman. Another woman that really comes to mind is Renetta McCann and she is just
00:05:15
Speaker
another rock star. She's a mom. I definitely know her name. A wife. She's a powerhouse within the advertising industry and sits within one of the largest, you know, holding companies in the world. And I've been inspired by her. I've followed her career since 2006 and she will be honored by the Advertising Hall of Fame really soon. And so she is literally
00:05:45
Speaker
another glacier that has kind of shaped what my mind frame is within this industry. And it's a reminder to truly never give up on trying to advance equity within an industry that wasn't originally designed for black and brown people. So I love to look at her. Someone that
00:06:11
Speaker
has inspired me. And I've had this mentorship conversation with him often. His name is Jason Smith. And he's just, he's so warm. He's also another dad. He just, just a great human that I think we, we know personally. And I'm just so happy to know him. I'm so happy to see him as
00:06:38
Speaker
a resource, someone that is an advocate, a supporter. It's so important for women to have men that they are able to look to and be inspired by. But then to also just call as a really good friend. So Jason Smith is awesome. Lizette Williams is another awesome human who is a glacier in the industry, currently a mom as well.
00:07:06
Speaker
Just what I love about these folks is that they have multiple roles, right? Like I am someone that don't have children. I'm not married yet. And so it's nice to see where folks are in their career and they also have families and they also are truly human in the end. And then if I take all the folks that I know in the city of Chicago and New York and LA and Arizona and all the other places in Atlanta,
00:07:34
Speaker
Like I literally would be talking to you all day, Jeremy, but I love the women that are in my family as well. I have cousins and aunts and just- We'll hit that on volume two. We do the second episode. And

Inspiration from Public Figures - Jay-Z and DJ Khaled

00:07:50
Speaker
I can't forget Jay-Z. Like how can I forget not being inspired? I mean, I think that he is just extraordinary. And obviously I can't relate to kind of his upbringing. I can't relate to
00:08:05
Speaker
you know, even the evolution of the relationship that he had with his mom. But who he is today and kind of the trajectory of his career of fighting and climbing, that's what I relate to. I relate to the climb that is necessary in order to provide success. And when you're hungry for something, you can find it. And I see that in Jay-Z. I see it in DJ Khaled. I see it in
00:08:32
Speaker
so many people. So I resonate with that so much on a more public mentorship level. Well, with that, Savaronica, keep on climbing. Keep on being you. It's been so fun. This is an awesome session. I'm so grateful. How do you want to show? Thank you. Really appreciate it. Thanks everybody for listening.
