OhHello!

It's episode 87 of the OhHello.io ๐ŸŒžโ˜•๏ธ pod, and our next "Hello" (aka a featured Mentor on the platform) is stoked to be a part of the growing tribe!

Dan Shuftan is many things, but father and husband comes first. Dan is a big fan of #payingitfoward , is the creator of the #ShuftanJobReport , and he has very much leaned into throwing the elevator back down to help others.

A motivator, a sales lead, and a pro committed to #mentorship, #networking and helping others.

His grandparents, both Holocaust survivors, met each other when his grandmother took care of his grandfather who was shot in the back of the head. The story and is deeply touching and underscores the resilience passed down from generation to generation.

Dan also talks about the impact his father, late father-in-law, and 3 friends/mentors have made on his career (Michael Porter, Jeffrey Mard, and Brian Goldstein).

๐Ÿ’ก Dan's words of wisdom: "Work hard and be humble."๐Ÿ’ก

Introduction and Personal Roles

00:00:09
Speaker
Oh, hello, Dan. Hello. Hello. How are you? I'm good. How are you? I'm great, Dan. I'm great. So I have the pleasure of knowing you. Why don't you tell me and tell our audience? Who am I speaking with? Who are you? million dollar question. I am Dan Shuffton. And I am many things.
00:00:33
Speaker
But most importantly to me, I am a girl dad times two twins. I am a motivator. I am a working hard and humbled type of individual. I am a sales pro and I'm a growth leader.
00:00:55
Speaker
Love it. I respect it. I respect all of that. What excites you about?

Mentorship Motivation and Giving Back

00:01:00
Speaker
Oh, hello. What excites you about being a new mentor within the platform? The last six months, I very much have leaned into throwing that elevator back down. I've always believed in doing it.
00:01:16
Speaker
and spoke a lot about doing it and took action, but never really put myself in focus as being someone and stepping forward and really showing that I care about the next generation. Having built this concept called the Shafton Job Report,
00:01:37
Speaker
on LinkedIn has also come with helping that next generation, motivating people who are looking for careers right now as they're mentally exhausted and probably physically exhausted.

The Shafton Job Report Initiative

00:01:52
Speaker
What is the Shafton job report? Why don't you tell our audience? The Shafton job report was a premise and still a premise I built around January.
00:02:03
Speaker
And last year was just a tough year. Totally. Yeah. For a lot of us. Yep.
00:02:10
Speaker
And so I was like, how can I shift the karma? Karma is my boyfriend. How can I make the karma feel good? And what can I do? And so I started to sort of test out sending out a few job links, 10 at a time, and they were getting picked up, and people were respecting it and appreciating it. Because honestly, one of the hardest things is just searching and figuring out what's out there. There's so much stuff.
00:02:40
Speaker
I started to create these long reports, 100 to 200 jobs that I, if I were in a search mode, would want to work.
00:02:54
Speaker
for or work with. And I started producing it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And then, Tuesday and Thursday, I created this concept called Candidates in the Crowd. And Candidates in the Crowd was my homage to faces in the crowd, growing up Sports Illustrated. Actually, the first one launched when Sports Illustrated temporarily went under and now they're back. I hope
00:03:21
Speaker
for a long time. I love the publication. But as you grew up, you would see, you know, Dan Shuffton is a all-star tennis player in 6A, yada, yada. And I thought, look, there's a lot of people who say spotlight me, talk about me. Who am I out there? And I was like, look, let's actually give them the chance.
00:03:41
Speaker
to talk about themselves. So it's a whiteboard, they have like three to five paragraphs, they talk about themselves, give them a nice little subject, I encapsulate it nicely, put it out to my network, and it gets really good traction.
00:03:58
Speaker
And the goal would be to expand that to sort of what we're doing now, really spotlight them, small format content, get audio, really be able to have them tell their story and beyond just written. But you know, the whole thing has been around mentorship has been around truly understanding
00:04:19
Speaker
their characters and connecting people who make sense as opposed to just being like, hey, this is this person really trying to understand the nuts and bolts about this individual and getting him to the right person while also motivating them, making them feel whole and making them feel good about themselves as they're being rejected left and right.

Skills in Networking and Well-being Support

00:04:41
Speaker
So that's good. Yeah, I was gonna say you and I talked about this a few weeks back. Help us understand just a bit of how would you characterize your skill set and just what you're going to be offering to the Oh, hello community. Obviously, it's pretty badass that you have taken upon yourself to build up a giant list a great following on LinkedIn. It's been relatively selfless. And you've been doing it to pay it forward and
00:05:08
Speaker
for good, karmatic reasons. But at the same time, there's there's got to be everything in life is a two way street. And it's a two way street where it takes up a lot of your time and you're an experienced professional who's well respected in the sales and marketing ecosystem. So help us a little help us understand a bit more about just your skill set and just besides for being a connector, motivator, master motivator, master motivator, there we go. I
00:05:36
Speaker
Look, I pay a lot to watching you and your previous podcasts, I've watched them, I've understood it, I've gotten my dance down for your intro, like I got this all done. And one of the things that I've looked upon was just talking to people and sort of taking upon what you're doing. The two weeks in between my previous role and my new role, which I just started, I spent an hour a day
00:06:02
Speaker
I did four 15-minute sessions called the Shepton Power Hour just listening and responding and trying to motivate people in different ways. Some people were employed and just were mentally exhausted. Some people were just out of ideas of what to do. Some people were trying to change, shift the entire paradigm of their existence
00:06:25
Speaker
not too dramatically, but to go from blank to blank. So look, I think I'm in terms of like, my skill set, yes, I can help them understand how to network how to sell, how to be forthcoming upon themselves, how to be motivated, how to but also as a personal, just how to stay mentally and physically in tune, as you're going through
00:06:54
Speaker
kind of like unfortunate shots that are happening.

Personal Mentors and Life Lessons

00:06:58
Speaker
Because even if you are employed or you're unemployed, you're still going through these stages.
00:07:05
Speaker
And so, look, I believe that my network has been done by a ton of just sweat equity. I've hustled and hustled and hustled. And I believe that my network has been very good to me, and something I want to share to individuals to find them the right place. But I also believe that a good 10 to 15 minute conversation will make you feel mentally better and motivate you to work hard and stay humble, which is my credo.
00:07:36
Speaker
I love it. Who are some professional mentors that have made a big impact on your career and that have helped get you into that motivator, into that just embody the personality that you are? Yeah, I appreciate that. It's all personal. I've never really, I kind of stick to my own lane. I've kind of, I have a fun background, not for now, but I've been and done some really cool and fun things in my life. And I'm very, very humbled about that.
00:08:05
Speaker
In my personal life, I look at my grandparents, both Holocaust survivors who met each other. My grandmother, my Nana took care, sorry, my
00:08:19
Speaker
Papa took care of my grandma who was shot in the back and in the head. And they met because he was trained by the American Red Cross. And the fact that these two, going through that situation, met each other and started a life in America is just like the ultimate story. That's amazing. Just thank you for sharing that, obviously. And with that, thank you. And the branch from that is my dad. My dad is a
00:08:48
Speaker
the smartest, hardworking, just get things done type of individual. So he's the hardworking part of work hard and stay humble. My father in law who just passed a few months ago, was the humble part, not that my dad was not a humble man, or is not a humble man, and not that my father in law didn't work hard.
00:09:13
Speaker
My father-in-law was just this personality who gave and gave and gave and gave till his last breath. And you saw that and you just saw how he did his own business. He did finance for individuals. He just gave everything to his clients. And you just look at that. So I've looked at these two really powerful men as the work hard and stay humble. Now in my career, I've been lucky enough to work for some great people.

Professional Mentors and Career Shaping

00:09:39
Speaker
Starting out with Michael Porter, I worked at at a company called telescope and I was raw. My sales ability was raw. And he was sort of like a classic Roman sculptor who sort of chiseled me in the right way.
00:09:54
Speaker
and got me to feel good about it and really leaned in and taught me enough about being motivated, but also being successful and got me to like, I took that turn in my career. He's one of them, Jeff Mard, who I actually only met about a year ago. Jeff Mard was a consultant for me when I was working over Horizon Media in my previous role. And Jeff was one of the sales consultants.
00:10:20
Speaker
and we didn't know about each other at first, which is always a little awkward. Jeff is really the guy who motivated me to do the newsletter around the Shuffton job report, to take it to the next level. Because Jeff is a entrepreneur. He's like, you need to take this to a level which is not just putting it out there, but really building something around it.
00:10:44
Speaker
Brian Goldstein is the third. Brian Goldstein is when I was growing up and getting into the stages of like the awkward early twenties to like, what am I doing with my life? Brian's always been like that master marketer, you know, working for McDonald's and doing these big things.
00:11:05
Speaker
And there's only those certain types of people who would get back to you and really try to help you. You know, those those few connectors in your life who actually keep touch with you and make sure you're continuing
00:11:20
Speaker
in the right direction. Brian was one of those for me. So we had those conversations. He introduced me to the right people. He keep me motivated when they said no. And then he celebrates my accomplishments and still does to up of two weeks ago when I started my new role.
00:11:36
Speaker
a lot of what brian did for me is what i want to do for that next generation and what i want to do on your platform continue that legacy be that one or two person or people in your life you're like. Why is this person doing it appreciate that they are and i'm gonna pay that forward when i'm setting my my life.

Universal Advice for Success

00:12:00
Speaker
I love it, Dan. That was a good way to squeeze it all in. In a sentence or less, two sentences, it's okay. Parting words of wisdom to the audience, to those watching, to those listening. Never give up. A new opportunity is around every corner and continuously work hard and be humble. Because those are two characteristics in any element of life that people will appreciate. You are so right, Dan.
00:12:27
Speaker
Dan, thank you so much for coming on the Oh, hello VOD and pod. We're excited to have you on the platform. Thank you everybody for listening. Thank you for watching. Dance it out my friend. Good grief. Thanks everybody.
