Birthday week. It's birthday week for me as at the recording of this episode. My birthday is July 23rd. It is July 25th at the time of this recording. um And yeah, so week's been good.

ah Thursday, I did some board games at work after work with some friends. And then yesterday, I had my sister came and made me dinner. Today is a chill day and tomorrow I'm taking a quick little trip up to Erie just because like I started last year, a yearly, hopefully tradition of trying to drive somewhere within a couple hours that I haven't been before. And a couple of friends are going with me and they're going to like pay for, you know, help me pay for gas and stuff like that. And just that way I can have like a, so I can keep up the thing. So I almost didn't do that either.

and they're like, no, no, like, you know, you have to still do it. um And so I have some friends kind of chiming in and helping out so I can still have my birthday trip that I like to do. So we're going up to Erie because I've never been. And so that's kind of what the week's been like. But yeah, just hit 38 and everything's breaking.

Well, you know, of course, the warranty lasted all the way up through 37. Yeah. it's a real shame that everything's breaking now. Yeah, yeah. Just for everyone, to just for all the listeners at home, the reason there hasn't been episodes for a little while or live streams for a little while is I got hurt like really, really bad.

And I don't really know how I have some ideas, but essentially i threw out my back for the first time in my life. And um it is incredibly unpleasant. And that happened about a week before a little bit, a little bit over a week prior to this recording.

That like over the course of a couple of days on my lower left side of my back and upper back were like real tight. And I started like trying to like massage it and put like stim pads on it. i was like, man, I don't know what I did that. I work out too hard. I have not figured it out exactly.

But over the course of a couple of days, it just kept getting tighter and like harder to move. And I was getting a little worried. And so I went to bed thinking like I'll get up in the morning and I'll go buy like a heating pad or something.

and And lo and behold, I woke up the next morning and I couldn't move, which was very scary. And I woke up because I was in pain, not because i was like, oh, let me reach over and turn off my alarm. Like, like 4 a.m. I just got up just because I turned apparently in my sleep and my body said, hey, that hurts. Don't do that.

And I woke up being like, oh, my God, what the fuck? And it was just. two and a half days at least of just constant. Like I hurt myself. Like I felt it probably the most Wednesday before it started being painful.

And then Thursday early morning is when it started to just hurt so bad. The Thursday, Friday, part of Saturday, ah was just constant dog shit.

Yeah, it sounds like you did quite a number on your back there. Yeah, it was bad. And I was I was telling Hitch, who I just heard come to the door downstairs, that um my body was making me make not so manly noises anytime I hurt myself, anytime I had to bend down, anytime I leaned, anytime I rolled over, every time I sneezed, oh my god. Oh, dude, sneezes are the worst. Dude, well every time I sneezed, it felt like somebody put a key between their knuckles and just punched me in the spleen.

It hurt so bad. Um, and so I just have to say, you know, now I've learned like some lower back stretches, some lower back warmups to do before I do any physical activity. Uh, it has been just, I must've hurt myself doing like martial arts or learning to punch my bag or I've also been thrashing about in my sleep a lot. So I'm sure that's part of it.

i'm trying But like, my God, like I was hurt so bad that I was just and every sneeze, every cough, every time I rolled over, anytime I stretched like and what I was learning from ah searching online and talking to some people I know that are in the medical field, they're all suggesting, like, don't lay around all day.

Like my initial reaction rest. Yeah, have to keep it moving. But they said, you have to keep moving even if it hurts. And i was like, well, it does. And so but I'd say for the first few hours after I called off work, I just laid on ice and just did nothing else.

But then I was learning like, oh, Adam, like if you let it, if it'll, it'll tighten up and lock up if you don't move it. And so everyone was saying, it's going to hurt, but you have to stretch. It's going to hurt, but you have to move.

And my God, did it fucking hurt. So for about a day and a half, I tortured myself with trying to do like gentle child's poses by leaning over my bed or like, all these crazy little yoga stretches and trying to just move my hips the best I could walk up and down the stairs the best I could. I tried to get on a treadmill at one point and that was scary because it sped up all on its own and I had to jump off.

That was awful for me. Um, but yeah, all that to say kids, when you do any sporting event now, especially as you get older, make sure you stretch your back just as much as you stretch your arms and your legs.

So I started falling forward, and i I almost tackled the person I was trying to tag. But it was good. We did that, and then we did some dodgeball.

What else has been going on? well Like you said, I did get another job. It was very last minute. I got a call on Monday night or I'm sorry, Monday morning. Asking me if I was willing to interview for a job.

And I said, yes. And the guy called me back in an hour and was like, okay, they want to meet with you in an hour from now. Okay. Quickly changed. Did my hair, everything.

Take the interview. And within like an hour of that, the guy calls me back. He's like, so when can you start? Oh, ah how about next Monday?

Yeah. Oh, I just thought of some good news since we're talking about work. I also hit you and I both got some good news. Oh, let me hear it. ah We both got a really significant raise pay raise um and like And I know some of it's performance related, but also some of it are just that the company is trying to help all of its employees meet like a certain demand of like money. And so they know things are expensive.

And we had a huge surplus of donations when the government shut down a few months back and then the SNAP benefits and everything. And so we had a ton of pouring of support. And so the board of directors,

They did a few really nice things for us. So before the pay raise, they sent us all out an email saying that I think our first or second paycheck in August, we're going to get like a 3% cash bonus. 3% of whatever we made in fiscal year 26, they're going to put into our check as a cash bonus, which is nice. That's like $1,000, which is great.

And then 3% of that, they're also going to put in

there's it's 3% of something. It's still right around a similar amount of money. They're also going to put into our four or three B's. So that's nice. They're just kind of putting some money into retirement for us. um And then, you know, then of course we just, we're going through our pay raises.

And um I think last year I got like a 4% raise or something like that. But this year I got a 12% raise. Holy crap. Yeah. And so some of that is like the cost of living where they're just like, Hey, you know, we want to help people out.

Some of it was performance based and some of it was just like, like they they're getting rid of old tiers that they used to use, like pay grade. So they're like, I guess they, I don't know how they measure them in numbers, but they're getting rid of the two bottom ones.

And they said, they're moving everybody up to like at least a tier above what they were before, just because everything's so expensive and they're trying to help everybody else out. And so i think so I think it was a three almost a 3% additional raise that they put on everybody's actual raises. So I think I got an 8%, and then they add an additional almost 3% on top of that to meet like the new pay floor.

Um, Hitch has been like really crushing it in their job and they're so specific in how their job works that no one else in the company knows how to do Hitch's job. Not even their supervisor knows how to do their job.

And I've been advocating a lot for Hitch because Hitch feels like they have to work off the clock a lot or work overtime when they don't need to, or go back into the office, even though they want to clock out. And I'm like, you have people who work salary that should know how to do these things. and they're like,

I'm the only one that knows how to do this function. i was like, well, we need to go talk to this person and make sure they also know how to do it because you're not salary. You shouldn't have to do that. um and So I got into a tiff with their supervisor like three weeks ago. i remember you talking about that one because I was trying to work over the weekend or something. Yeah. And so. um Yeah, it's not to say anything bad about anybody there. It's just that like sometimes I think just like.

there aren't like certain protocols in place. and I'm just like, Hey, you need to like know this shit. Okay. But anyway, so like they got recognized for that. And so they got a pretty significant like double digit pay raise as well.

um So yeah, like I'm really excited in a couple of weeks, I might actually be able to get a little bit caught up, you know, hell yeah, stuff comes in. So yeah, it's pretty exciting. And for nonprofit, it's not common for something that happen. And they all made that very clear. They were like,

And the the director who works, not the director, but the COO who I work with a lot told me specifically, he's like, hey, I was only supposed to put you up to like this point, but like I'm the COO and I don't care, so I put you up to this one instead. And so I was like, cool, as long as you won't get in trouble, great. And he's like, I know it's going to yell at me that much. um But it's really nice because like life's fucking expensive, man.

in work, outside of work, whatever, like character matters, man. It matters so fucking much. One of the people notice one of the best pieces of advice I ever got. And you're kind of living proof of this.

That's what your resume is for. That's what they looked at. They already decided you qualify to get that job by doing the interview. The interview is to meet you.

What is your personality? What are you like? Are you easy to work with or are you going to be a thorn in their side? And that's the main thing when it comes to these interviews. Like, yeah, they'll ask you questions about how you handle problems and things that you couldn't put in your resume.

But under all of that, They're really just trying to feel out your personality to see if you'd be a pain in the ass to work with or, you know, a pleasure to be around. And it can make a huge difference.

For sure. um Yeah, I see what you mean, because like that's very much what happened with me was. Yeah, they were like, hey, we had people who had like higher qualifications and more experience than you, but you were the only one that like asked us these certain questions. You were the only one that was like cracking jokes. You were the only one that talked about the mission and how you could serve people. And you seem really in touch with like, you know, being with the community and treating people well. they're Like none of that came up. It was all business structure numbers with the other, you know participants or the other um interviewers.

But like, you know, the the guy was just like, yeah, you were the only one that like made it a conversation and it was just easy to have a conversation. And like, you know, sometimes you don't think about those kind of things. But again, that's kind of proves my point. And yours is like character matters.
