Taylor's Journey from $50 to 150 Deals

00:00:03
Speaker

00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.

Lessons from Danny Pesce's Tour

00:02:10
Speaker
And yeah, so let's see.
00:02:12
Speaker
Today's episode, we're talking about time, the big T word.
00:02:16
Speaker
And got thinking about this really just over the weekend.
00:02:19
Speaker
I was at Danny Pesce's Set or Closer Tour.
00:02:23
Speaker
Great event.
00:02:24
Speaker
Another event that you should go to.
00:02:27
Speaker
He's doing it in multiple cities across the country in the U.S.,
00:02:31
Speaker
But I heard some great feedback from speakers.
00:02:34
Speaker
You had Jeff Mendez who came, was a VP of sales, former VP of sales over at Vivint.
00:02:42
Speaker
Dude knows so much and hopefully coming on the podcast soon.
00:02:46
Speaker
If you know him, you can shoot him a little encouragement.
00:02:48
Speaker
But we heard from guys like him.
00:02:50
Speaker
We heard from Danny Pesce, of course.
00:02:52
Speaker
We heard from some guys that have been on the podcast, Ricardo Ritchie and a lot of other just top setters and closers in California.
00:03:00
Speaker
So I might do another episode on just some takeaways I had from that event.
00:03:04
Speaker
But the reason I'm talking about time today is because what I noticed these top producers, these legends of the industry, guys like Jeff Mendes, they are super respectful of their time or super conscious of where their time is going.

Conducting a Time Study

00:03:19
Speaker
And you look at guys like Ricardo Richie who had over 400 closes last year.
00:03:23
Speaker
Do you think he is wasting time throughout the day?
00:03:26
Speaker
Not really.
00:03:27
Speaker
In order to close that many deals, you're maximizing your time.
00:03:31
Speaker
And so it reminded me of an exercise that I've done myself a few times and I recently just started again.
00:03:39
Speaker
So I want to share it with everyone on the show and I want to challenge you to do this exercise.
00:03:45
Speaker
And I'll preface it by saying it is pretty tough to do.
00:03:48
Speaker
It's not an easy thing to do.
00:03:49
Speaker
It's a commitment and it's going to take time ironically.
00:03:52
Speaker
But if you do it, I promise you, you're going to notice hours and hours, probably a day,
00:03:58
Speaker
that you are wasting, that you're giving up.
00:04:01
Speaker
Okay, and so here's what you're going to do.
00:04:03
Speaker
And I'm going to explain why after and some of the thoughts behind it.
00:04:06
Speaker
But what it is, it's called a time study.
00:04:08
Speaker
And I have mentioned this in the podcast before.
00:04:11
Speaker
It's been a long time though.
00:04:12
Speaker
So what it is every day, you got 24 hours in your day, you document every 15 minutes, what did you do?
00:04:20
Speaker
What happened in the last 15 minutes?
00:04:22
Speaker
And
00:04:22
Speaker
You print off a sheet of paper, you document it, you write down every single hour of the day, every 15 minute interval, what did you do?
00:04:31
Speaker
What did you accomplish?
00:04:32
Speaker
And what happens when you do this, you start to notice, okay, this 15 minutes I wasted, I was playing too much chess on my phone, I was playing too much clash of clans, whatever you do on your phone.
00:04:47
Speaker
You notice things like that and you notice just ways you're not being effective with your time.
00:04:52
Speaker
and so the challenge is if you do that for two weeks 24 hours a day okay obviously you're not waking up every 15 minutes in at two in the morning to do this but when you get up you write down on that sheet of paper what you did okay and hit me up if you do want a example of this um we are going to create a sheet for our solopreneurs hit me up if you want access to that okay um
00:05:16
Speaker
You shoot me an email, shoot me a DM by next episode.
00:05:19
Speaker
If we have enough interest, we will create a little link to it for a website if you want to download it too.
00:05:25
Speaker
But for now, shoot me a message.
00:05:27
Speaker
Um, but as you do this, you'll notice holes in your day where you are wasting

Influences on Time Management

00:05:33
Speaker
crucial time.
00:05:33
Speaker
And this really goes back to a dude named Peter Drucker.
00:05:37
Speaker
If you've not heard of this guy, he is the godfather of time management of business.
00:05:42
Speaker
And just to quote him, he says, time is the scarcest resource and unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed.
00:05:49
Speaker
The analysis of one's time, moreover, is the one easily accessible and yet systematic way to analyze one's work and to think through what really matters in it.
00:05:58
Speaker
So this guy knows the stuff.
00:06:00
Speaker
This idea, I think, first came from Peter Drucker.
00:06:03
Speaker
I learned it from a guy named Alex Charfin.
00:06:05
Speaker
But if you do this exercise for two weeks, you're going to have a good understanding of how you can improve it, what you need to do.

Quarterly Time Study Challenge

00:06:13
Speaker
And then the second key, as you do this time study, you break down exactly, you classify the categories where your time went.
00:06:20
Speaker
See, there are other reasons.
00:06:21
Speaker
Some of us think that we're spending time with family.
00:06:25
Speaker
Some of us think that we're being present with friends, whatever.
00:06:28
Speaker
But if you go back and really classify it,
00:06:30
Speaker
Sometimes we see that we're wasting, even though we think we're being present with our loved ones, with family, friends, we start to realize, okay, I was on my phone this amount of time.
00:06:39
Speaker
And another key with this, print off the page.
00:06:42
Speaker
Okay, I was just doing it in my phone, but it's better if you print off an actual page and write down exactly what went down for those 15 minute intervals.
00:06:51
Speaker
Hey, so that's the challenge.
00:06:52
Speaker
If you want to join me in it, I recently challenged one of our coaching students in our Soul Society program to do this.
00:06:59
Speaker
He's gaining a massive understanding of where his time is going and I'm getting a massive wake up call myself.
00:07:07
Speaker
And the key is if you can do this every quarter.
00:07:10
Speaker
It's going to keep you on track.
00:07:11
Speaker
It's going to make sure you're using your time more effectively with your team, with your family, with your loved ones.
00:07:18
Speaker
And it's going to make you a much better manager, much better sales rep.
00:07:22
Speaker
I can promise you that.
00:07:23
Speaker
So that's the challenge.
00:07:24
Speaker
Short podcast today.
00:07:26
Speaker
Hit me up before anyone if you want to join in in that.
00:07:28
Speaker
Shoot me a DM if you want access to the sheet.
00:07:32
Speaker
And I would love to hear if that helped you.
00:07:34
Speaker
Love to hear all the holes you saw in your business.
00:07:38
Speaker
And once you see it, you can improve it.
00:07:41
Speaker
But if you don't know where your time is being wasted, it makes it super tough to improve it.
00:07:45
Speaker
So I hope that helps.
00:07:46
Speaker
Send this to someone that's wasting a ton of time.
00:07:48
Speaker
It's going to help them get on track as well.
