Southampton's Champions League Hopes

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Brighton podcast joined with or joined by the Southampton boys, ah Greg and Zach. Greg, Zach, how are we doing?
00:00:23
Greg
we're We're hanging on in there, I think, is the best way we can describe it at the moment.
00:00:28
Zak
Giveover, you literally about five minutes ago told me that you're you're upset that we're probably going to miss out on Champions League spots this year.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:00:34
Greg
Yeah, I think it is the time of the season that we have to accept that that that might be gone.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
here we go
00:00:41
Zak
i
00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Guys, don't give up hope, you know, the Champions League or Conference League, you might still have a chance.
00:00:42
Zak
surviving Surviving.
00:00:49
Zak
With

Early Season Struggles

00:00:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah Yeah, I've got to say, it's not been the best start of seasons for Southampton, four points. ah Only one win, one draw, ten losses.
00:00:50
Zak
any luck, we'll have to see.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hate to just keep rubbing it in, you know. I'm sorry. Sorry for doing this.
00:01:09
Zak
Ah, it's fine.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lowest goal scored, second most conceded. Guys, where's it all going wrong?

Recruitment and Tactics Concerns

00:01:16
Zak
ah When you come up from the championship and you are not ready to come up from the championship and you are fourth and you win to play a playoff final and everything is great and the world is amazing and then 50% of the players you recruit turn out to be duds, a lot can go wrong.
00:01:29
Greg
Yeah.
00:01:29
Zak
um If you listen to our fan base, it's entirely down to the fact that Russell Martin likes to play out from the back.
00:01:35
Zak
I don't really know I don't think with any of the managers that you have that are out there currently, I don't know who you put in and I don't know who they what they think is going to hugely change.
00:01:46
Zak
um I think you you strip away the little identity they have and then we end up with our previous relegation season where we're trying to play four different styles of football and we lose every single game until we go down.
00:01:58
Zak
So, lots lots of things.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah he yeah it
00:02:02
Zak
you
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, question. ah I was actually thinking this because so it sounds like you're actually more on the side Zach of Russell Martin. I know a lot of Southampton fans do dislike him and like think he's too stubborn in the way he's playing and like I guess general football fan out there that have
00:02:13
Zak
Wow.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
potentially just glimpsed on match of the day of a couple of Southampton games. ah Seeing this kind of stubborn way that he's playing where he's very, very rigid in how he plays in terms of he will stick to this playing out from the back. Are you for that or are you kind of against it?
00:02:39
Zak
I ultimately would like whatever eventually starts winning us games. However, the last time that we did really, really well, and we won lots of games, we had a manager known as Claude Poelwell, who you might remember also took over Leicester at one point, and we fired him because the football that he played was mind numbing.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
he
00:02:57
Zak
Possession-based football at the moment isn't much better, to be honest anyway.
00:02:57
Greg
And then.
00:03:01
Zak
especially where in our wolves game, we ended up with 70% suppossession and zero shots on target. um However, it is a identity and it is something that the players are learning. We have had a lot of what I would consider to be miss hit transfers that just aren't quite firing the way they want. um We've had some young guys come through. Obviously, everyone knows the name Tyler Dibbling, except you don't because you could maybe not buy him off of us, please. Everyone, he's really actually really bad. um So it's it's less of a, it's less of, I think,
00:03:31
Zak
my perspective a really really liking Russell Martin and his style of play but also an acceptance that if the board were going to get rid of him they would have already got him got rid of him.

Financial Constraints and Management

00:03:41
Zak
They don't have the money to cancel all of the contracts of him and all of his coaching staff because we spent it all on people at a Aaron Ramsdale which was worth doing and they're far more business focused than they are football focused which is as upsetting as it is is going to mean that longer term we will survive as a football club So I think it's just like sad acceptance and the fact that there's no point me and Greg is talking about how are we going to fire him every week because that's just a a podcast about whether or not we're going to fire Russell Martin.
00:04:11
Zak
And the answer always ends up with no.
00:04:14
Greg
Probably not. Yeah.
00:04:15
Zak
yeah So until that anything actually changes, I'm kind of of the idea that we just got to back the boys until until something happens. And if if they decide if relegation is the
00:04:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:26
Zak
what happens, relegations what happens. like None of us expected, to know you you were a long time ago, like a younger brother to Southampton, and now you are everything we wish we could be.
00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:37
Greg
yeah
00:04:37
Zak
Everything that we had one season of being, except we just didn't replicate it consistently.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:04:44
Zak
So yeah, lots of opinions.
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, tell me about it. How the fate of both sides could not me be more different. Ones fighting for their survival while we're up here, high and mighty, mixing it up with the big boys in the Champions League places.

Brighton's Surprising Performance

00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
God, every, like, mid-sized club's dream, basically, isn't it? Or when you kind of go through the championship.
00:05:06
Greg
it's ah Is that how you saw the season playing out for you guys or are you sort of way beyond even your expectations at the moment?
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, way beyond our run of games as well. like We've kind of gone through our rough patch as well, and we're fifth. Our next six games are on like should be fairly straightforward.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got, obviously, you guys who you'd like to think is a win or some sort of result.
00:05:34
Greg
That's a banana skin, it's got to be.
00:05:38
Zak
Greg, you can't keep saying that mate. The only other skin we've been for so far has been Everton. And even they were upset that they won because it meant they didn't fight their manager. so
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah yeah then we've got like Fulham ah Crystal Palace I think Oh, who else? We got someone at West Ham. So that's like very winnable games in our next five. So yeah, this is way beyond I imagine what lots of Brighton fans and our fan base is kind of thinking or thought how the play the season would play out. I thought we could contend for Europa League or like the Conference League place.
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But flirting with the Champions League is absolutely mental and I don't think, yeah, I couldn't have thought of that. For you guys, you said earlier, Greg, that ah you guys obviously finished fourth, won the playoffs. Do you think that squad was ready to come up, Zach?

Premier League Readiness Debate

00:06:38
Zak
i think I think parts of it were, and there are players that have matured into it. like you know we we have what Whenever we have these sort of discussions, we have discussions around what we would consider to be like Premier League quality players.
00:06:50
Zak
So coming up, you you sort of had a a Flynn Downs was, I think, ready to step up.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:06:54
Zak
Taylor Harwood-Bellis was ready to step up. Jan Bednreck, previous Premier League mainstay. Kyle Walker-Peters. Joe Oribo. on his day and then kind of a lot of players around that we were kind of like, well, let's recruit to kind of fill those gaps. And some of the others that we'd expect to be doing better. And I think what's happened is that some of those players that we'd expect to do better, haven't done as well. Players that weren't even on our radar, like Tyler dipling at the beginning of the season have ended up being absolute, you know, revelations for us, regardless of the results. Some players who we've purchased have been what we thought, you know,
00:07:31
Zak
we didn't realise how much we'd get out of him like, uh, Yuki. I know he's not everyone's favourite at the moment because he was at fault for the, uh, one of the goals.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:39
Zak
However, at the same time for 5 million pounds, I think he was an absolute bargain signing.
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:43
Zak
Um, but then also, uh, as me and Greg have been, we're going to be discussing tomorrow or whenever it, whenever the wildcard Wednesday podcast goes out, we're talking about some of our transfers yesterday.
00:07:50
Greg
yesterday.
00:07:53
Zak
There you go. Thanks, mate. And some of those, and some of those, um, players, you know, that we had at higher expectations of. There have been some that we've spent quite a lot of money on loan fees and stuff that we haven't ended up.
00:08:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:04
Zak
There's one of our daily echo journalists. He's got in for Evan Ferguson, because but instead we spent all that money on Maxwell Cornay, who, if you didn't know, he's actually on loan at Southampton. If you don't know, it's because you've seen him play about five minutes of football.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right. Yeah.
00:08:19
Zak
So um I don't know if it was 100% ready.
00:08:21
Greg
Disappointed against Stoke, which I think really sums it up, right? Like if you can't be a
00:08:25
Zak
Yeah.

Evan Ferguson Loan Possibility

00:08:26
Greg
pacey winger playing against Stoke, then what hope have we got?
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wow.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:31
Zak
ah I think I'd say, I think we're just, we have, um, I think that the players were ready to give it a go. I think that whenever you bring in a huge amount of new players, it's going to upset the balance a little bit more. Some have adjusted to Russell bull, whatever you want to call it. Um, some, some haven't, uh, and the quality of the premier league puts us to the sword because when we make mistakes like we did the other day.
00:08:55
Zak
they will be capitalized on. um And they when you're playing against Rotherham, that doesn't happen as much, you know?
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, well ah you mentioned that Evan Ferguson there, obviously it seems like you do kind of need a striker. We were actually talking and on our Wildcard Wednesday pod because Brighton announced that they're actually okay with like letting him go out on loan. so And I actually suggested to the guys that we do our podcast with, I said,
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Southampton would be a good spot for them to go and it would give him minutes, it would give him a little run around to actually play and hopefully build some confidence to actually get get those goals. Although it could be quite quite tricky which is what Bless said, one of our guys said that it could knock someone's confidence if they only score like four goals while they're playing every minute or whatever. But yeah, after the break we're going to be talking about our last week's fixtures, so stick around for that.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the Daily Brighton podcast along with Southampton. And we're going to talk about last week's fixture because, boys, you you got that was unfortunate. It was a prime time game against the big side in Liverpool. And to lose 3-2, I actually

Promise in Defeat Against Liverpool

00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
thought you guys played very well. um How would you assess your performance against Liverpool, Greg?
00:10:46
Greg
Yeah, you know, the further removed we get from it, the more I'm ah seeing the positives and sort of feeling the hurt a little bit less. There was, you know, we we knew it was going to be tough. We were without Ramsdale and without ah Yanny B and and we still managed to score two goals, two reasonably good goals, well worked, maybe a questionable penalty, but we don't worry about that.
00:11:11
Greg
um and And, you know, a really good goal from open play and and, you know, we were in front and the problem was we probably scored too early. Uh, if that's a real thing, because I don't think any Saints fan was sitting comfortably at two one up thinking, well, we got this in the bag. Um, but, but it was still a good performance, even missing those key players. And, and we sort of seen it through the rest of the season as well, where we have these spells where there's real
00:11:43
Greg
sort of promise and quality that you can see shining through and it's just, it's really about how much longer we can leave it before we start transferring that promise into some actual points and and something useful.
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and you obviously conceded, I mean, Alex McCarthy, I bet your fans must absolutely despise him after that performance and that's kind of where you kind of want Ramsdale in, right?
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was he injured? I'm guessing that game, but Ramsdale, okay.
00:12:15
Greg
Yeah, he's broken his finger. So he's out for at least a few more weeks.
00:12:17
Zak
He is out for a while.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh my god, so you've got, you've got McCarthy again.
00:12:19
Greg
Uh, yeah.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Music to our ears.
00:12:22
Greg
Yeah. And, to but you know, in the stadium, it didn't look too bad.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah he
00:12:26
Greg
It just looked like Mo Salah had pulled off a piece of magic and then I watched it back later on, uh, on the highlights. And I ah can't repeat the words that I used to describe what happened there.
00:12:37
Greg
It was, it was shocking.
00:12:37
Zak
To be clear mate, we were northern and we were basically pitchside so you could barely see anything, but I knew it was bad when my wife texted me because she was watching the game at home, going, aren't goalkeepers supposed to be in the goal?
00:12:55
Zak
And I think when you get a text like that from my wife, he doesn't really care much about football, kind of like, yeah, but it It is, I think that he felt it probably as much as everyone else, right?
00:13:07
Zak
Like at the end of the full time whistle Ramsdale basically came out from the stands to give him a hug because that, you know, that's gotta be, that's gotta be a hit to your confidence.
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah.
00:13:16
Zak
Your 150th appearance to the club, a club that you've probably put a lot of your heart and soul into over the last couple of years. And then, you know, you can see the goal like that, but wasn't entirely him.
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, because he's been a long-time servant, hasn't he? He's not been too bad for you guys, just probably at the lower levels.

Southampton's On-field Errors

00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And also it was also the... I mean, they didn't start off very well, because even the first goal you could kind of say his was at his fault.
00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know it's how Russell Martin wants to play, ah like, just playing out from the back and probably just trying to get out quick. But, I mean, there's a time and a place to try and play out from the back, right?
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, you don't throw it.
00:13:50
Greg
distribution has never been McCarthy's strength. And that was always our biggest concern with playing him.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly, yeah.
00:13:56
Greg
But, but it, you know, it kind of is what it is. It's a position that we were going to have to tough out because unless we sort of find a magic spell that's going to fix Aaron Ramsdale's finger much quicker, we've got, we've got a little while to go yet.
00:14:12
Greg
And I don't really see any options. I don't see Lumley, our third choice to keeper coming in. Like there was a period last season when we lost Bazzouni who was our first choice keeper and Lumley was supposedly our second choice keeper, but Russell Mein actively chose to play McCarthy over Lumley.
00:14:30
Greg
So it was a ah bit of a strange one. So, but we'll see what comes from that.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:36
Zak
and that was actually what got him his contract.
00:14:36
Greg
But I mean, you guys as well have had like a good run, right? You're unbeaten in November at the moment, right? So.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Yeah, the Beatman City, dispatched of Man City, quite like they work like they're nothing. Bournemouth did the what hard work to figure out how to beat Man City.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then we pounced on it and found out, oh, actually, yeah, they are beatable, beat them. And then we to say thank you to Bournemouth, we went to the South Coast and beat them as well.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, it's been a great couple of games for us. um But yeah, that
00:15:11
Zak
the
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was actually It's quite funny though, the big headedness aside, it wasn't actually our best performance ah against Bournemouth and I actually thought they were kind of the better team to an extent, they had much more of the ball, they had way more shots. The red card obviously did help them but a We were just more clinical, I think, that we had much more quality on the pitch, like in the especially in the final third. Welbeck's come on leaps and bounds. We say this every single time, every pod every crossover pod that we do. He is just a new man. He's a reformed man under Hertzler. Then Zhao Pedro is like our star boy. And then Ruta playing off both of them is magic. So that's something I'm um'm really looking forward to going forward. Hopefully we do play all three.
00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we were we were just more clinical than them.
00:16:00
Greg
oh sounding pretty scary to be honest it feels like uh
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
which Yeah.
00:16:04
Zak
Well, it's it's like Mattone has been in my fantasy team for probably the last three years because he always seems to just randomly get goals that no one really talks about. But, you know, the problem is, is, yeah, it's it's we, you are everything that Southampton wanted to be.
00:16:19
Zak
And whether it's luck, ridiculously good recruitment, you at one point had a World Cup winner in your squad, like absolute, absolute insanity.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
speaking Yeah. yeah
00:16:27
Zak
It's like what? where we wished we would be if it wasn't for lots of change in hands of ownership and bits and pieces like that. And um and and also it's it's fun to kind of, you know, we're both South Coast team, but I've never seen a huge rivalry between Brighton because our rivals, whether they are in the bottom, whether they are not even a club entity anymore will always be Portsmouth.
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:47
Zak
So the idea of Bournemouth trying to start a rivalry with us is always very funny. Watching them attempt to start a rivalry with you and then mess up out and find out um was was very, very funny.
00:16:58
Greg
I did hear it labeled the seaside Derby, but I've got to say that Bournemouth has the better beach if we're being honest.
00:17:01
Zak
which is absolutely ridiculous, like...
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, oh yeah.
00:17:06
Greg
But Brighton definitely has the better football side.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's actually just 14 miles of slant for other pebbles. Yeah.
00:17:10
Zak
The the ability to the ability to go 2-0 up, but then also even with the red card, keep it, because the problem is, even at 2-0 up without a red card, every Saints fan will be going, will not be 3-2 by the end of the game.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:22
Greg
Yeah.
00:17:22
Zak
And the problem is, is 9 times out of 10, it will end up being that, because of silly mistakes or just, I guess, the mentality of getting over the line.
00:17:29
Zak
you know You know, you kept them out until the 93rd minute where former Saint who probably is only getting game time at Bournemouth now because we gave him a full season David Brooks scored.
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:38
Zak
But this is the thing. But, you know, you look at it is a from a football perspective game ahead of side. It is a club to admire.

Brighton's Recruitment Success

00:17:48
Zak
And my advice will be from a team that 10 years ago got to enjoy that to enjoy it while it lasts.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. she
00:17:57
Zak
But the problem is, is every time anyone's had that to you, You, all your players go, you have a new manager and a new season and somehow you just keep getting higher.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
it Yeah.
00:18:05
Zak
It's insane. That doesn't happen to us.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, that...
00:18:09
Zak
We had Pochettino go, we had Cuban come in and then Cuban went and then after that, it's kind of just been whatever wherever right now.
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I dunno, yeah.
00:18:16
Greg
Yeah.
00:18:17
Zak
Like I remember at one point we had Sparky in charge and then we gave him like a three year contract and then fired him about a game later. ah It's been a, it's been a long road for us to be where we are.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah 100% I do envy your your kind of path because it is something that we've not experienced for like a couple years and like well not a couple years like even longer than that like I think maybe seven or eight years uh seven years um where we just keep selling our players but recruiting better players like we sold society and everyone thought all this could be this is I know it's big money but he's going to be a big loss Beliebers replaced him. We sold Macalester, the World Cup winner. Everyone was thinking, oh, that's going to be a big loss. Then we just found Pedro to replace him, slightly different positions. but And then you get like every single season, like Tony Bloom and the recruitment, ah whoever's doing it needs an absolute guard of honor at Brighton. like you
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
wrote
00:19:16
Zak
Danny Welbeck, you're saying about him, right? like It's one of those things where if you asked most Offridge football fans what Danny Welbeck's doing nowadays, your your kind of brain would just be like, oh, surely he's off in Turkey or Saudi.
00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
and teacher Yeah.
00:19:29
Zak
But it's not. You've managed to get him back into Premier League, like scoring quite a lot of goals and just being like a revelation in like, you know, it's it's yeah, it's um
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:19:39
Zak
It is bad because we tried to do that. we we We managed it two or three seasons, right? Like we we brought Aldewald in, he went to Spurs. We brought Lovren in.
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:48
Zak
We replaced Lovren with Van Dyke, both ended up at Liverpool. But then after that, it just kind of hasn't, we weren't able, and we had that one season where we had a lot of change of ownership. We had like Gillette a car, which, you know, Greg's probably going, Oh yeah, we did have him.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:20:01
Zak
Yep. Place for Olympia place fully on now. Like we had quite a few players we kind of brought in and then they didn't work.
00:20:04
Greg
Yeah.
00:20:07
Zak
that That van Dyke money went on people like Muhammad Elianusi, who played like somehow every game on the house and did nothing of note until he scored at the champions league for Copenhagen.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nothing, yeah.
00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:19
Zak
So yeah, it's, it's, you guys are a fantastic, good, footballing story and I just really hope that they don't you don't get dismantled like a lot of the other clubs through just money essentially.
00:20:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
or Yeah, yeah, 100%. And us at the Daily Brian podcast will take that and we will use that. We will take the next 30 seconds to revel in all those kind words during this ad break.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the Daily Brighton and Southampton crossover. So guys, it's about time we talk about how this game will play out, how how we think, we wow how we see this game going. And Greg, I'll put it to you. How do you see this going?
00:21:28
Greg
Uh, look, I haven't predicted a Saint's loss all season and it's not gone that well for me so far, but I still, I dunno, it feels, it feels like a dangerous game for us. Friday nights historically don't serve us particularly well, but but I've got to stay the optimistic course. And I think, uh, we might scrape a two-wheel draw.
00:21:58
Greg
this week.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
to draw well but to be fair
00:22:01
Greg
Zach's putting a shocked face because that's the first time I've predicted a draw as well.

Inconsistency and Uncertainty

00:22:04
Greg
so
00:22:04
Zak
yeah Yeah, that's that's why. yeah
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh yeah
00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, so much respect to the Brighton boys. To be fair, there have been, our last five, I was looking earlier, there have been two draws and then three Brighton wins in our last five, but there are two draws and I think before that, I think it was before 2020, where you guys beat us 3-1 or a couple of times as well in the row. but And then Friday nights, like you say, it's quite an interesting time to play.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Zach, how do you kind of see the game going? Is this ah this way you can see bright and drop points potentially? Or Southampton do do an upset?
00:22:46
Zak
It's so hard to predict how we will be because there are days where we we turn up like we did the other day and we get 3-2 against Liverpool. And there are days like where we turned up to wolves and decided to not shoot for the entirety of the game.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:01
Zak
So so it's it's difficult to predict. we've We've had a bit of a revelation in Paul Onewachi played such a good game against against Liverpool and quite frankly I'm i'm really happy for him because me and Greg haven't been his biggest fans we've not really seen what the hype's been about and to be honest he still hasn't actually scored so for a striker like he's not done what the job would be but we also had Shane Long for a long time who went the longest period of time without scoring I think like ever like it was like a year and a half or something between goals so maybe if we decide to be a bit more risky and potentially
00:23:36
Zak
play two up the front, which is what we've kind of hoped for. We've hoped for Archer and Onewatch at the same time, because the idea of, you know, playing to both of their strengths instead of trying to play to one is probably something that we should maybe start doing.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:23:49
Zak
And there are going to be changes because we've still got Jan Bednarak out. We've still got Alex McCarthy out. I think playing Flynn down to the centre back wasn't the smartest idea last game. So it'll be interesting to see what he wants to do and try and attack from the front foot.
00:24:03
Zak
But, you know, we go into every game. I think they go into every game wanting to win, regardless of how it feels. um And on our day, if the chances go our way, maybe we could beat you guys.
00:24:16
Zak
But also, to to underestimate you is ah you know to to do so at our peril. And it will be interesting to see how it plays out either way. Either way, I'm hoping it will be a good game of football, because it might be draws that we've ended up having a couple of times.
00:24:31
Zak
But that's usually off the back of you know it's usually goals involved, which is at least the nice thing about it.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:36
Zak
um As Greg likes to say, every single match we have will not make or break our season. um But ah out of the run that we've got is probably one of the ones that the the mentality of the fans will be, we should maybe take something from.
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:50
Zak
um Whereas, you know, I'm i'm kind of of the mentality of every game in the Premier League. we As we've seen this season, anyone could beat anyone, especially with cities downfall.
00:24:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:00
Zak
like They haven't even had like any of the the points deductions or the charges go through yet.
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:25:06
Zak
And their steaming's have like absolute meltdown behind the scenes without Rodry.
00:25:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
it usually
00:25:10
Zak
So, you know, who who knows what the future will bring. But I think it will be an exciting game either way. I'm hoping for an exciting game. But just I just don't know. it's so It's so hard.
00:25:21
Zak
As Greg pointed out, every time we predict anything, this season, it's just been like, Oh, it turns out that everything was completely different. And for some reason, we're now playing like Paul, I know actually left back and Cameron Archer right back.
00:25:33
Zak
And why don't we just shove a fling down to strike a position?
00:25:33
Greg
That's it.
00:25:35
Zak
Yeah, why not? So who knows? But I'm hoping for a nice Friday night game to watch either way.
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, poor Nacho is an interesting one. He was so... I watched the game against Liverpool and he was unbelievable.
00:25:48
Greg
okay
00:25:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was like holding off Van Dijk and Canate. I'm not like, you signed him two seasons ago when you were first in the pram, right? And he was woeful. Came from like...
00:25:59
Zak
11 games, nothing, nothing.
00:26:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, nothing. and then Didn't play for you in the championship. he Was he out on loan or something?
00:26:05
Zak
He was out on loan in Turkey where he put in a good shift, which is what I think got him back into training with the first team.
00:26:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah but that's the problem is that's his level it's like i think he he came from like i don't know why i know this a guy's career so much but he came from a Belgium didn't he and he was he was sick there uh it came i have seen it
00:26:12
Zak
and
00:26:12
Greg
Yeah.
00:26:18
Zak
He did, he did.
00:26:18
Greg
yeah
00:26:21
Zak
ah but Did you see one of the things I'll ask you and your audience to do but when everyone's finished is to go and have a look at the the hat trick compilation of his like his season which is like it sure is a hat trick.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
she Yeah. It's the most uncomfortable category.
00:26:36
Zak
The Belgian League. but
00:26:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It looks like he can't play football and he's just been thrown there.
00:26:43
Zak
Everything is accidental.
00:26:44
Greg
i think one of the goals he literally tripped over the ball and it went in the net like it was yeah yeah
00:26:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he's not a gold threat, really.
00:26:51
Zak
ah
00:26:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's just a massive mountain of a man that can hold it up. That is a figure. He did come off with some sort of niggle, but he looked to be milking that a little bit, ah won't I would say.
00:27:02
Zak
I think he was just knackered, he's not had a 90 minute aim since Turkey, so...
00:27:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i'm not like that's exactly what i thought he was calling for a stretcher i was that at one point i was thinking mate you want a stretcher just so you can lie down i swear to god
00:27:11
Greg
We had a good laugh in the stands thinking that they were never going to find a stretcher big enough. There was not.
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah for
00:27:17
Greg
ah
00:27:18
Zak
The medic went out with about 4 foot 2 as well.
00:27:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
six for
00:27:21
Greg
Yeah.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah the
00:27:24
Zak
Oh dear.
00:27:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is ah there are people in your squad that I do fear and that is Tyler Dibbling. He has been like some sort of revelation for you guys. That's the only kind of I hate to say it, but that's the only worry I kind of have going into this game, is how good Tyler Dibbling has been. And I think if you get him up against Estepinian, who us at Daily Brighton is, we have mixed views on. We don't think he's been what he was before he got injured.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think he has lost a step. He's been cooked a couple times by some wingers. So that's the biggest fear I have. But I think, yeah, the thing that you guys have to fear with us is if you do play out from the back, and it's probably something that you've grown accustomed to now, if you play out from the back, our press is actually pretty good.

Brighton's Pressing Advantage

00:28:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
We caught Chelsea out, I know it was a couple of games, about four or five games ago. We caught them out.
00:28:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
three or four times on the press and we scored two goals from it. ah Liverpool, we played them we got them on the press. They couldn't handle us in the first half of that game. And then Man City, we came out of the blocks in the second half with the intention to press high and not give them any space.
00:28:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then that's how we had our comeback. So I think that's where I can see us getting some joy is pressing.
00:28:48
Greg
I think the really upsetting part is that your press probably doesn't even have to be that good because at some point we will pass it to you.
00:28:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. part yeah Exactly, that's the worry. I'm not not joking, that is genuinely, I'm thinking one of your centre backs will pass us the ball.
00:29:00
Greg
ah
00:29:03
Greg
Yeah.
00:29:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that something that, you well, it is. I've watched you a couple times, it's for even on Match of the Day and...
00:29:09
Greg
I think we've given away eight goals this season from what I would categorically say are stupid mistakes, ah which is
00:29:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:18
Greg
insane yeah
00:29:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:21
Zak
They've always been they've always been very sort of important goals as well. Looking at sort of the Leicester game and the Ipswich game and things like that.
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look.
00:29:28
Zak
They've always been from places that we shouldn't. But that's why it flattered Liverpool, right? Because you know we we scored against them, and all of their goals they scored. Yeah, sure, they scored, but they were really bad goals, so who cares?
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they were terrible. yeah no One thing I will say, guys, to give you a bit, boost your spirits a bit, ah it's I can see you guys winning the Possession Battle, so good.
00:29:53
Zak
Ah, thank goodness. We were worried then.
00:29:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
you you
00:29:55
Greg
Russell Martin will

Possession vs. Wins Dilemma

00:29:56
Greg
be happy. yeah
00:29:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
are and You are in the Champions League places for possession this season and that is commendable.
00:30:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will say impressive stuff.
00:30:03
Greg
yeah
00:30:06
Zak
Pass is complete as well. Greg was talking yesterday about whether or not fitness is the problem for our squad.
00:30:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
A bit longer, yeah.
00:30:08
Greg
yeah
00:30:11
Zak
And I'm like, well, maybe if they stop passing to the ball, each other, to each other, every 0.5 seconds and actually stopped to catch their breath, maybe they'd be able to run for another sort of 30, 40 minutes, but who knows?
00:30:21
Greg
yeah
00:30:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, let's go school predictions then. So oh ah ah Greg, you said two all, right?
00:30:29
Greg
Yeah.
00:30:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zack, did you say yours?
00:30:32
Zak
I would like to think too well as well, to be fair, I'd like to think that but maybe we've learnt some lessons. I don't see us winning, if I'm totally honest, but the the idea that we need at least a draw for it to calm down.
00:30:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:47
Zak
Because even with a win, we're not getting out from bottom place anymore.
00:30:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. No, yeah.
00:30:50
Zak
but Like, ah you know, it says a lot more on the line for us then than you. But because of the way that you play, I still think that it will just end up being a board draw.
00:30:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:01
Zak
It'll be a non unimportant part of your season and then might be actually quite important to us, who knows. So yeah, I'll go for 2-1 as well.
00:31:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And this is where I poo on your parade. i'm goingnna go I'm going to go 3-0, Brian. I can't wait for Sky Sports to start bigging it up as well.
00:31:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like you said earlier, it's like a south coast derby. The Battle of the Beaches.
00:31:25
Greg
Yeah.
00:31:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um not You don't have a beach, do you?
00:31:27
Zak
Our beach is just a dock at this point.
00:31:27
Greg
No. Yeah.
00:31:29
Zak
It has been for a couple hundred years.
00:31:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
No beach. Battle of the South.
00:31:32
Zak
We paved over it.
00:31:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's that's all I can say. And I cringe every time they do that. I'm thinking, that's just like, like du like you said, they do with Bournemouth all the time.
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
They always try and give them a rival.
00:31:44
Zak
I think the difference is Bournemouth really do want a rival, whereas I for some reason historically have always seen your rival as Palace and I'm not really sure why.
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
They need one.
00:31:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah, they are.
00:31:52
Greg
Yeah.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. the M23 Darby.
00:31:56
Greg
Yeah.
00:31:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
There we go. Yeah, love lovely speaking to you guys and I would like to say good luck for the game ahead but I wish you zero luck and I hope Brighton get into these Champions League places and put pressure on City.
00:32:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're only three points behind him now, I think, or a couple points. There we go, knocking out the Champions League places. But yeah, lovely, lovely speaking to you guys and we hope you've all enjoyed listening at home. That's it from me, Jamie G. That's been Greg and that's been Zach. Peace out, guys.
