Todd: Wait, let me adjust all of my audio settings first before we start.
Talkin2Todd: I haven't haven't stretched before a show in a while. I was probably due for that.
Todd: All right. Hopefully I'm still there. Hopefully Sancaster is still recording. Okay.
Talkin2Todd: so i like
Todd: Hey, look at that.
Talkin2Todd: It seems to be.
Todd: All right.
Talkin2Todd: Love the levels?
Todd: Levels, levels.
Talkin2Todd: Yep, love levels. OK, cool. It's a short week.
Todd: Yeah, I mean, when we record a release on Saturday, and then we're right back on it on Wednesday, it doesn't give the content basket a whole lot of time to fill up.
Talkin2Todd: So are you saying you think we'll have a shorter show this week?
Todd: Whoa, not sure that's what, what and I'm not sure anything that I said there would even give you that impression.
Talkin2Todd: Buckle up toddlers.
Talkin2Todd: Hi toddlers. Welcome to talking to Todd, a weekly podcast with Dwayne Johnson and Todd Prince where failure is always an option. Thanks for joining us. Hey Todd.
Todd: Hey, how's it going?
Talkin2Todd: Pretty good. Pretty good. How are you?
Todd: Not too bad, not too bad. Back here in the in the other studio with the different microphones. So all all set to all set to record here from the basement. So excellent. Also looking forward to a weekend of 101 degrees, I think.
Talkin2Todd: Cool.
Todd: So back to back to weather time.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, it sounds fantastic.
Todd: And we're in the cool place, not the hot place. And it's 101.
Talkin2Todd: i saw I saw a ray gun t-shirt today that said, yeah, but it's a wet heat.
Talkin2Todd: Just more more more of an more of an Iowa corn sweat thing, but yeah, sure, why not?
Todd: Big seller in Florida. Yeah, sure.
Talkin2Todd: Let's see. Feedback, follow-up, and updates.
Todd: Okay.
Talkin2Todd: Toddler number one.
Todd: Yep.
Talkin2Todd: This wasn't feedback from the show, but feedback from a text exchange that you and I had with Danny about why they water the fields during the hyration hydration breaks during World Cup.
Todd: Yes.
Todd: Yeah, danny was Danny was concerned that they were watering the fields and that it would ruin the sod.
Talkin2Todd: And
Todd: And then I explained, no, the fields actually do get watered due to plane surface issues.
Talkin2Todd: Because they they want a certain level of moisture.
Todd: Yeah.
Todd: Yes. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: So, and amy Amy really appreciated that watering explanation.
Talkin2Todd: Some of it was in 50 words or less and other parts of it was not. But
Todd: the The first 50 words wasn't 50 words or less. the The next 12 exceeded that.
Talkin2Todd: everything...
Todd: But, you know, who's counting?
Talkin2Todd: But I was, for the record, I was counting. But the the last 12 words were nifty enough to get you a pass.
Todd: Yes. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: So, you know.
Todd: Hey, had some had some feedback from Lisa.
Talkin2Todd: Uh-huh.
Todd: We were listening and you were talking about how you were watching The Wire, which she has watched.
Talkin2Todd: Uh-huh.
Todd: Then she wanted to know, have you have you watched The Shield?
Talkin2Todd: Was that with the guy that played the thing in one of the Fantastic Four movies?
Todd: Yes. Michael Chiklis?
Talkin2Todd: Michael Chiklis.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: Yes.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: mike Michael Chiklits? Is that the the little gum guy?
Todd: that sounds That sounds like a a mob guy who every all the other mobsters hate, and they called him Michael Chicklets. You're like, hey, come on, give me a better name.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: i I was aware of The Shield, but I did not. I was not. I didn't know. I didn't really watch that show.
Todd: Okay. From...
Talkin2Todd: I also didn't watch Homicide Life on the Street, which may be next.
Todd: lisa Lisa's review, if this matters, she said, the wire is good. She thought the shield's even better. So you may want to cue that up.
Talkin2Todd: Really? Okay. i will I will make a note.
Todd: Although again, homicide life in the streets is also a fairly highly ranked one. i don't I don't know that you can go wrong with any of those gritty dramas.
Talkin2Todd: gritty police procedural dramas. This is, I mean, but the thing about the wire is it's more than just a police procedural. These, this long arc, you know, and they're referencing things.
Talkin2Todd: I'm now midway through season three. We're not, we're not yet to what I'm watching, but I'm midway through season three and they're referencing back to things that happened in season one because it's all, yeah it's so good.
Talkin2Todd: 25, 30, whatever years later, it,
Todd: Here's the thing.
Todd: you You can remember that because you're watching it all together. Remember when this would have aired, you would have had to in season three, remember something that happened that they talked about three years ago.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah.
Todd: And you're like, was that a thing?
Talkin2Todd: Yes.
Todd: i don't, what? Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Mad props to the continuity people. A. B. And it was HBO at that point. So you had to actually, and at that point you had to actually watch it on HBO. You couldn't just go back and stream it.
Talkin2Todd: If you missed it, you were watching it.
Todd: Yes.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: So, or, or watch the replay later that week or whatever, but I didn't have HBO. So no, I, no, i
Todd: So you weren't watching it at all. That made it easier. Hey, when are we when are we watching this? We're not.
Talkin2Todd: Back in 1993. When are we watching this? I think I'm going to pick it up in 2026.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, that sounds like a good thing to do. Sure, why not?
Todd: Because I'm sure by that point we'll have solved all of our problems and you won't have anything else better to do except to watch the show. Yeah, that's how that played out.
Talkin2Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: and On demand. but Sorry, on what? You're going to stream it? Like from a fire hose? i don't I don't understand any of these of this terminology. Does this have something to do with surfing?
Talkin2Todd: No. i Let's see. Toddler 401k. The cigarettes in China segment was literally the best Todd ought to know I have heard.
Todd: Smoking.
Talkin2Todd: I believe, I believe, Jim Carrey, that's smoking.
Todd: not another Honeymooners reference, is it? No. Okay.
Talkin2Todd: No, no, no, it's not.
Todd: Yeah, I get it. right.
Talkin2Todd: Let's see. And also the last other piece of feedback came from the anonymous feedbacker.
Talkin2Todd: thanks from keep Thanks for keeping my construction feedback anonymous. What I got.
Talkin2Todd: Thank you. Appreciate the feedback, even if it's anonymous. There you go. Any corrections this week?
Todd: Uh, no, not on my side.
Talkin2Todd: Short week. There you go. How about some follow-up?
Todd: I love the concept that the amount of time between when we record equals whether we made an error or not. Like if we had two more days to really go through the tape, we might find another error. Anyway, that's fine. It's a short week. No errors. That's great. That's fine. Okay. Hey, let's see. Follow up. Turns out Waymos can't handle freedom.
Todd: This story who that comes to us out of... Yes.
Talkin2Todd: Freedom.
Todd: yes.
Talkin2Todd: Freedom. Oh, sorry.
Todd: This story comes out of PCMag.
Todd: Apparently in San Francisco, there was a massive crowd... There were massive crowds for the 4th of July. The company's driverless cars are being blamed for contributing to the traffic chaos before and after...
Todd: more than 100,000 people gathered near the Golden Gate Bridge for the show. However, they were met with long lines of stalled Waymos, which struggled to remove to maneuver around the crowds, walking along the roads near the historic bridge to see the firewalks fireworks.
Todd: A police officer stood by, just looking at the entire line. And then after they left, there was a similar scene, but then i to there was a tow truck nearby.
Todd: I was assuming that they were just closing the doors of the Waymo's, but apparently they were trying to take one Waymo away. But according to Alphabet, which owns Waymo, the high volume of travelers and unplanned road closures also contributed to the disruption, as many people tried to reach the fireworks show by car.
Todd: Wait, Americans went to a fireworks show outside of the city and they went by car. oh Interesting. It did point out, however, while many of the robo-taxis were able to drive a drive away once the congestion lifted, other vehicles ran out of energy while idling and required a tow truck.
Todd: So anyway, there are pictures here that show like 30 Waymos all just sitting in in in a line trying to figure out how to get out of there. So anyway, good news. I just take it as Waymos. Waymos hate freedom because they don't know what to do with it.
Talkin2Todd: Certainly seems like a reasonable conclusion to me.
Todd: Yep, it's the only one to draw.
Talkin2Todd: aha I did not. My my soundboard is full. Otherwise, i would have I would have played our Waymo theme from a couple of shows ago.
Talkin2Todd: Again, if Zincaster crashes, we'll have a Waymo theme.
Todd: Do you have anything for fallout?
Talkin2Todd: World Cup fun fact.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: When France beat Sweden at MetLife Stadium last week, they now, France, they being France, has more wins at MetLife Stadium than the New York Jets did last year.
Todd: I mean, France is better. And you're like, at soccer, they might be better at football, too. I don't. I'm just...
Talkin2Todd: They might be.
Todd: The Jets are like, you can win multiple games here?
Talkin2Todd: wait hold on. What's the, what?
Todd: You know, if the Jets keep playing the way that they're playing, maybe they should think about maybe just playing all of their home games in Paris. Not that it will help them. They'll just get away from all of the Jets fans booing them.
Todd: Hey, I brought i brought a sort of a follow-up. like We bring a lot of idiots, and sometimes we have a palate cleanser where we talk about non-idiots, just occasionally, just to remind people that the whole world isn't full of idiots.
Todd: there were a lot of idiots in the world cup in the last week, uh, in world cup adjacent.
Talkin2Todd: Yes.
Todd: Uh, and, and a lot of the sports world, a lot of the world cup has not been great, but I wanted to bring this from the tour de France, uh, which started on, on Saturday.
Talkin2Todd: Okay.
Talkin2Todd: On Saturday, yeah.
Talkin2Todd: we yeah so this So that's why this is in follow-up.
Todd: Yes, because we already talked about it. So we talked about Tour de France, so here we go.
Talkin2Todd: Cause we talked about tour last week. Yeah.
Todd: On the stage two of the tour, UAE rider Isaac Del Toro had a puncture on his front tire or one of his tires. And so he's on the side of the road kind of waving his arms, and his team car goes whizzing by him.
Todd: which Which made him, according to the article, look forlorn because now now there's there's neutral car support that will come up and help you, but my team's not even helping me.
Todd: And he's waving his arms. Anyway, Duane, do you know what happened?
Talkin2Todd: A rival team pulled over and helped him.
Todd: No. Two rival teams pulled over to help him. Visma, uh, Visma Lisa, but elite Visma Lisa bike. Yeah. Visma and Ineos cars both saw that guy's team cargo past.
Todd: They both pulled over and the Visma mechanic went out and got him fixed The reason why that's really important is, so the two main riders who are going to win the tour more more than likely are either Tadej Pogaccia, who rides for UAE, who's a teammate of Isaac Del Toro, and Jonas Vingago.
Todd: Do know which team he's on?
Talkin2Todd: I don't know, the another rival.
Todd: Visma. He's on the Visma team that stopped and helped the other team fix his bike so that he could so that Isaac could continue.
Talkin2Todd: Okay.
Todd: At the end of the day, the winner of the stage, number one, Isaac Del Toro. Number two, his his main the leader of his team, Tadej Pogaccia. And I believe number three, Jonas Vingigo from Vespa.
Todd: So it wasn't just another team. It was literally their biggest rival team saw him. Oh, he's got a flat. His team car can't help him. You know, we'll pull over we'll take care of it. Because here's the thing.
Todd: We want to win this. This is a sporting competition. We want to win this on the road. And I would hope that if one of our riders needed help and we couldn't get to him, one of the other teams would help as well.
Todd: That is not the World Cup ethos. I'm just going to say that. I'm looking at you, Paraguay. That is not the World Cup ethos. And yet, that's how they roll haha in the Tour de France.
Talkin2Todd: maybe Maybe Isaac's team wasn't focused on him since he's not their number one writer.
Todd: Yeah, well, what ended up looks like happened is they went flying past him and up the hill. And then eventually they realized they must have not seen him or something. And they're like, oh, our dude has a problem back here. So then they pulled over.
Todd: And then one of the mechanics grabbed his, the guy, Isaac's spare bike. But they didn't know that he was getting help and would come up. So the mechanic got on the bike and rode the bike down the hill to Isaac.
Todd: that did That did end up in a 500 euro fine for the mechanic and a kid you not, a yellow card. More yellow cards were given out in the stage two of the Tour de France than all of the World Cup.
Todd: a Anyway, because there is a rule and that it's a good rule. You are not allowed to ride your bike the opposite way of where the 190 people are riding.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, back backwards backwards into the peloton.
Todd: That's a safety feature.
Talkin2Todd: that I can see how this could cause a problem.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Yes, yeah, yeah.
Todd: Yeah. Yeah. So his team eventually helped him.
Talkin2Todd: Good in bowling, not good in bicycling.
Todd: Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So his team eventually did help him, but not one, but two different teams pulled over. What do you need? How can we help you? Look at that.
Todd: Actual sporting stuff.
Talkin2Todd: is i i havet I have a follow-up question.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Is one of those teams where you got your bike from RAGBRAI?
Talkin2Todd: the The Lisa bike team? Isn't that what you did when we went on RAGBRAI?
Talkin2Todd: Oh, you that's a rent a bike. You went to rent a bike, not Lisa bike.
Todd: Rent a bike. I didn't lease a bike. I rent a bike. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Okay.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: Yes.
Todd: Different one.
Talkin2Todd: Okay. Okay.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Good.
Todd: Which is different, which is also different than when me and my wife go out for our rides. I jump on the Cannondale and she jumps on her lease a bike. So...
Talkin2Todd: that tracks. Yep. Yep. A quick Yombo report.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: This was a Cubs game. I'm a little disappointed in Yvonne because i didn't get a I didn't get a message from her. Shane Baz threw a Yombo pitch on Tuesday night for the Orioles against the Cubs, 84-84.
Talkin2Todd: And then same game later, Matthew Boyd for the Cubs, 93-93. So Tuesday night was a big Yombo night. If you'd have had money betting on the Yombo pitch on Tuesday night, you'd won big time.
Talkin2Todd: So...
Todd: Is this the first time in recorded history that there have been double yombos? And recorded history being like three weeks?
Talkin2Todd: No, it's no it is it's happened in the it is it's happened in the last three weeks. It normally happens from the same pitcher, not from pitchers. that's a That's an added bonus that it happened from pitchers on opposite teams.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: But
Todd: You know, when you brought this up, I thought this whole thing was kind of yeah stupid. No stupid, no so no worse than you know most of what we do. But now I'm like, okay, so you can you can make, on the prediction market, you can decide if there is a Yambo pitch, on which pitch is it, on which pitcher, how many per game,
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, well, that was part of the original concept was that's how we get rich off of this thing is we get a little slice of every, of every bet that happens.
Todd: Yeah. Yeah. Trifectas, quadfectoras, you got to whatever. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah. Yambos.
Todd: Yambos.
Todd: Feels, feels like, uh, feels like I should be, I should be, uh, registering in the domain name right now, if I'm honest. Okay. Anyway, congratulations.
Talkin2Todd: Well, for the record, for the record i i already own yomboradio.com, so it can't be that.
Todd: Congratulations to Baz. Yeah. What? For the record.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: But maybe yombo pitch, yombo pitch.com could be.
Todd: do d army yambo pitch com
Talkin2Todd: Yep. Yep. While we're talking about this, Josh has already registered it. So there you go.
Talkin2Todd: this feels like This feels like, yes, nevermind. Anyway, don't want to give anybody else any other ideas. Too late, too late. Oh well, anyway. Did we have any?
Talkin2Todd: Did we have any construction updates this week? See, I'm learning.
Todd: You are learning and no.
Talkin2Todd: Yes, okay.
Talkin2Todd: Nothing over here either. Okay. I can, I think I can, can I, can I safely delete two 2221 from my soundboard and put something else back in?
Todd: Okay. I think you can move it off the soundboard, but keep it handy just in case.
Talkin2Todd: Keep it handy. Okay. Okay. Cool. Business meeting. Check. Uh, okay. So, uh, let's see. How about Todd's tech corner as brought to us by the Taylor center for technology policy.
Todd: Yeah, so I think last week we discussed that good news that our website didn't redirect to our old site that no longer worked. Bad news, it didn't redirect to the new site. But apparently you went and looked and it's not working.
Talkin2Todd: It's now working. So if you go to talkingtotodd.com, you'll actually go somewhere. So success. Good work, Todd.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Good work out of you.
Todd: Thank you. i i neglect This is one of those things that just catches that you you learn over and over again, which is anytime you screw around with DNS, you got to give it time to propagate.
Todd: And clearly when I was testing, I didn't give it enough time. So, you know, make the change. What do you think? 20 minutes, 30 minutes? How about five days? Yeah, that should be fine. So...
Talkin2Todd: We're just not patient enough. There you go. Damn it, I want my website now.
Talkin2Todd: Let's see, should we do? Oh, we're yeah, we're going to do this this week, aren't we?
Talkin2Todd: That's right. That sound means it's time for Duane Guess a Number. America's Favorite Game. Is it America's Favorite Game Holiday Edition? What do we got this week, Todd?
Todd: Yeah, I thought since we're past the 4th of July, now it would be a good time to ask you fourth a couple of 4th of July numbers. So, sure. Why not?
Talkin2Todd: Sure. Sure, why not?
Todd: This is...
Talkin2Todd: Well, wait until we drop our next episode out of time, which is a St. Patrick's Day quiz.
Todd: Look for that coming this Arbor Day.
Talkin2Todd: Please, go ahead.
Talkin2Todd: it
Todd: Okay, so I was kind of curious. I was thinking like, you know, people people, we like to shoot off fireworks in the United States to celebrate the 4th of July. And I was thinking, i wonder I wonder how many pounds of fireworks are shot off In the United States on the 4th of July. Now, that's a very specific number. Nobody knows the exact number. But according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, as quoted by Red Apple Fireworks,
Todd: Dwayne, what number do they use to say how... Well, how many millions of pounds of fireworks are shot off by Americans every year, the bulk of which is the run up to Independence Day. So this may include some New Year's stuff or other times.
Todd: So this is all of it. But i don't know. What do you think?
Talkin2Todd: So one thing I learned this week, there's an American Pyrotechnics Association.
Todd: Yeah, there it says in parentheses, APA. And I'm like, hmm, I think when you when you put things as an APA citation, I don't think that's the APA you're thinking of.
Talkin2Todd: I don't think that that's quite, did the citation is not quite there. do Does this include all of the professional shows that happen at like baseball games and
Todd: Yes. It says, this translates. This translates into blank of individual firecrackers, cakes, canister shells, and professional-grade artilleries lighting up the summer sky. So I believe it's everything.
Talkin2Todd: professional grade sold to homeow homeowners or professional grade sold to, i've okay.
Todd: you've just you You and I now have the exact same amount of information.
Talkin2Todd: Okay.
Todd: i've I have read to you the extent of what I have.
Talkin2Todd: I, I, I'm the, the West end of high probably sets off a million pounds just by themselves. I, we don't have to leave our porch to see a firework show. We just have to look down the hill off of our back porch and watch them go nuts.
Talkin2Todd: heck i don't know this is ins this is an insane number this is this is why this is a perfect number solid work todd uh 980 980 billion is that the standard 980 billion isn't that the standard guess yeah i've yeah i've seen fireworks i'm familiar i've yes
Todd: I mean, you've seen fireworks. you've You've seen, you've been, how much? Yeah.
Todd: You've shot some fireworks off. So, I mean, this is, you, have you had have you ever, have you ever had sprinkler, sparklers?
Talkin2Todd: i Sparklers. I've had sparklers and I've had sprinklers. Both. Yes.
Todd: Yeah, there you go.
Todd: Okay. Okay.
Talkin2Todd: Sweet Lord. A hundred million pounds.
Todd: you're, Oh, Hey, I found, I found an updated number. You were low.
Talkin2Todd: Oh.
Todd: You were low on a previous number, but I've, I went to, the American pyrotechnics association directly. And while you were talking, looking around, by the way, a fun fact, uh, their website, American pyro.com. Yeah. That's not sketch.
Todd: yeah God Lord. Yeah. I actually have,
Todd: There we go.
Talkin2Todd: There we go. There we go. It's too bad we're not on video because I got the fireworks to go off behind me.
Todd: I am...
Todd: Okay, all right, here we go. I have total total consumption for the year, every year from 2000 to 2025. And it is broken down by the consumer fireworks and display fireworks.
Todd: so
Talkin2Todd: Oh.
Todd: So I have both of those and then the overall total. Now, what did what did you guess?
Talkin2Todd: I guessed 100 million pounds.
Todd: OK. As an overall number, you are low.
Talkin2Todd: Okay, well, I was thinking that that was the number just for consumer fireworks.
Todd: That is also low.
Talkin2Todd: Oh, damn. Was then was I was I actually thinking of the number for commercial fireworks?
Todd: Then you are high.
Talkin2Todd: Oh, okay. Well, I just cannot catch a break here.
Talkin2Todd: let's Let's not quite double it. 175 million pounds in aggregate?
Todd: Still low. In 2025, a grand total of 322.4 million pounds of fireworks were shot off in the United States.
Todd: Of that, 23.5 million are for display fireworks, including your Disneyland's and those kind of things.
Talkin2Todd: iCubs, sure.
Todd: Yeah. And 298.9 million pounds of down year. In 2022, the was 461 million pounds of fireworks.
Todd: twenty twenty five is a bit of a down year in twenty twenty two the number was four hundred and sixty one million pounds of fireworks
Talkin2Todd: Oh, people were celebrating because they could leave their houses.
Todd: Apparently, apparently. Display fireworks stays somewhere kind of near the same. And man, people just love their fireworks. So there you go In 2025, 322 million pounds of fireworks.
Todd: one One other...
Talkin2Todd: yeah what Yeah, really, 2022 was the first 4th of July in two years that you'd been able to actually gather.
Todd: i live in a red state. You could gather at any point.
Talkin2Todd: Never, nevermind.
Todd: It's fine.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, that's fair.
Todd: Yeah. one other One other number...
Talkin2Todd: And in the blue states, you can't buy them. So whatever.
Todd: Yeah, so it's fine.
Talkin2Todd: now.
Todd: One other question for you. You're aware of the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show in New York City.
Talkin2Todd: i am now
Todd: you've never You've never seen the Macy's. They have a barge out on the one of the rivers, and they they it's it's the granddaddy of all Fourth of July fireworks shows in the United States.
Talkin2Todd: Okay. Is there a ball drop?
Todd: Okay.
Talkin2Todd: Okay. I'm i'm i' am now familiar. 75,000 shells.
Todd: Yep. Perfect. How many shells?
Todd: Oh, it's it's in the Hudson River. It's from multiple barges in the Hudson River. You can't put all this on one barge. How many shells, individual shells, do they fire off during the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show in New York City?
Talkin2Todd: I'm low.
Todd: Ooh. You know what? You're a little high, but i yeah you know what? It's 60,000 individual shells.
Todd: I'd hate to be doing that.
Talkin2Todd: Dang.
Todd: I'd hate to be doing that with one of those click sticks that turns the, you have to like, no, this one's, each one.
Talkin2Todd: each he sure
Todd: and Oh, hey, i think I think this one's out of oil.
Talkin2Todd: and My stick's out.
Todd: Anybody
Talkin2Todd: Yeah. but
Talkin2Todd: kiss it
Todd: got some matches?
Talkin2Todd: Well, you want you what you really want is a stick in each hand so that you can go twice as fast.
Todd: Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. that'
Talkin2Todd: Yeah.
Todd: That's the problem they've got. Sure.
Talkin2Todd: Right. Yes. That's, yeah.
Todd: Yeah, yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Oh, Lord. Should we do a couple of idiots?
Todd: Sure, let's do that.
Talkin2Todd: I've got a couple of idiots that I brought for you.
Todd: Okay.
Talkin2Todd: This is a local story.
Talkin2Todd: Dateline, Des Moines.
Todd: Hello.
Talkin2Todd: The Des Moines Police Department says two separate OWI investigations led to the arrest of a father and a son on the city's south side late Sunday night.
Talkin2Todd: The first incident happened just after 10.30
Talkin2Todd: The officers responded to the report of a vehicle stopped on the wrong side of a road and located a vehicle that had left the road and hit a fire hydrant.
Talkin2Todd: In a separate incident on the same night, just after 11 p.m., his son was observed driving a vehicle restlessly recklessly near Southwest 9th and Watrous Avenue.
Talkin2Todd: An officer attempted a traffic stop, suspect fled, and the pursuit began in the thousand block of Randolph Avenue. Both father and son arrested for OWI within 30 minutes of each other on separate sides of town.
Talkin2Todd: Just in case you were curious. The first guy that they found asleep in his car and had to wake him
Talkin2Todd: was charged with a second offense of OWI, driving while barred, wasn't supposed to be driving anyway, possession of a controlled substance, interference with official acts, and failure to maintain control. And my first reaction was, wait, he was asleep and the car was parked. How is he not in, oh, i forgot the part about where he drove off the road and hit a fire hydrant. That would be the failure to maintain control part.
Talkin2Todd: The son of
Talkin2Todd: He was arrested and charged with OWI. Third offense, eluding driving while barred, also has lost his license, and reckless st driving. Anyway, there was also an unrelated arrest warrant that was active for the son.
Talkin2Todd: Des Moines police is using the incidents to remind drivers to make plans for a safe ride if they're impaired by alcohol or substances.
Talkin2Todd: Jesus.
Todd: but But maybe don't call Waymo if there's fireworks because you may not be getting home anyway.
Talkin2Todd: Maybe, right? Anyway, that's what's going on in Des Moines. that was That was late Sunday night. So it was not it's kind of a 4th of July story, but more of a 5th of July story. Maybe they had a 5th. Maybe that's what the deal was.
Todd: When you said driving while barred, my first thought was, was he driving to go act in a Shakespeare play? but then but But you said barred. Different.
Todd: Different story. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Well, they were they were both they were both barred after they were arrested.
Todd: Apparently that's not going to stop him from driving, though.
Talkin2Todd: No, clearly not. No. So...
Todd: Although, you know what? Actually, that's that's a heck of an idea. Instead of calling OWI, you're just driving while barred. You were in the bar, and then you're driving home. She's still barred.
Talkin2Todd: They charged me with being drunk in public.
Todd: Public. I didn't want to be drunk in public. I wanted to be drunk in the bar. They put me in public.
Talkin2Todd: I want be drunk in a bar, which is perfectly legal. Arrest them.
Talkin2Todd: Oh, he's so funny. Let's see. What did you what did you bring for Idiots? can you You can do better than that.
Todd: Yeah, so so we've talked about how AI is doing great and crypto is just doing great. And we've also covered the World Cup. Why don't we bring us why don't we bring all of those together?
Todd: So according to CNET News, Some World Cup bettors were in for a rude surprise on Sunday when an AI-generated notification from the crypto exchange Coinbase shared the breaking news that Norway had won beat Brazil 3-2 in a knockout match.
Todd: The AI said that Norwegian player Erling Haaland had scored two goals in the clinch win. the The reason why this people were surprised to get that update was that the match hadn't started yet.
Todd: So it had been delayed due to inclement weather. However, the AI that the crypto platform runs on already announced who the winner of the game was and who scored the goals before it ever happened. Now, hours later, the actual result was different. ha Norway did win and Holland did score two goals, but the final tally was two to one.
Todd: And as this points out, if you're betting the difference between three to two and two to one, depending on what you bet, it could be the difference between winning and losing on all sorts of bets.
Talkin2Todd: That's a big deal. Yeah.
Todd: Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
Todd: A number of people on on social media did take screenshots and and post it, pointing out that them putting out this is dangerous and irresponsible.
Todd: It did, however, they did try to, when when reached for comment, Coinbase referred to an ex-post by the company's head of consumer products. he He did reply.
Todd: he replied to all of these postings saying they've made some updates to avoid these type of inaccuracies in the future. It's a funny way of saying just made crap up. It's not an inaccurate. It's just...
Todd: But then he added this. And hey, it turns out Norway did win and Holland did score two goals. So maybe the AI knew something we didn't. Nope.
Todd: Nope. That's not the way this works. It didn't it didn't see the future.
Talkin2Todd: That's, you don't get to do that.
Todd: ye No, you don't get to do any of that. Anyway, this is what happens when you let the AI and the crypto people join up. Like, do we even need to play the games? I don't know, man. Here, it says that they won.
Todd: What more? So cool. Also, i guess I guess apparently Coinbase is a crypto thing. Good for them, I guess. So, yeah.
Talkin2Todd: We simulated this game 40,000 times and it came.
Todd: No...
Talkin2Todd: Never mind.
Talkin2Todd: Let's see. So things that we're watching.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: World Cup.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: And as previously mentioned, the wire. Again, I'm three and a half years into this. We've now gotten to the point in life where they have a laptop because those weren't easily accessible, particularly.
Talkin2Todd: But it's about, I'd say, four inches thick.
Todd: Oh, the port a portable.
Talkin2Todd: Yes, it was. Yeah. It was more of portable computer than a laptop, but, uh, it was also for the record, a gateway. I didn't remember the gateway made laptops, but anyway, uh, it was, it was definitely one that would, would withstand a nuclear bomb because seriously, this thing was well, it was, that was a solid piece of equipment.
Talkin2Todd: And they've moved from pagers to to little Nokia cell phones.
Todd: Ooh, it may survive a nuclear bomb, but it won't survive more than 45 minutes not being plugged into the wall because that car battery will drain very quickly.
Talkin2Todd: How about you? I'm sure you're watching World Cup. What else are watching?
Todd: Yeah, so we did watch World Cup. Yay! Hey, England, that was that was a great that was a great match. but We enjoyed that. Well, we enjoyed the result. i I'm not sure I enjoyed the... last 35 minutes plus 11 minutes of stoppage. But, whew, there we go. Also, i neglected to cover this last week. Two weekends ago, we went, Lindsay was in the cast of a show in town put on by, i believe it's called Mad King Productions. They do drunk Shakespeare.
Todd: So,
Talkin2Todd: Okay.
Todd: Lindsay, yeah, so Lindsay had a part in it, and she did really well. It was it was great. But the the concept is, and we didn't really know much about it, and actually, if I'm honest, right,
Todd: Lisa's like, do you want to go to Drunk Shakespeare? And I said, i was i lived in a fraternity house for two years. I've pretty much seen it. So I don't i don't need to go. But we wanted to go see Lindsay.
Todd: So we're we're there to support. And she's like, you know you guys aren't going to like this. And we know. Yes, we know. I mean, you guys really are not going to like this. And we're like, we know. But we also went to some of your high school plays.
Todd: And there was one that we will...
Talkin2Todd: Could it be any worse than that?
Todd: Yes. And then she's like, it could be. And we're like, well, okay, at least we were warned. And it was they were doing Twelfth Night and sort of an adaptation of Twelfth Night. Here's here's the the way that this works. Basically, the entire cast comes on stage beforehand and and and drinks a beer to just to get everything going.
Todd: Then there is there are Venmo codes on your seats in front of you. And during the first during the first act... I think that's how this works. You could you could Venmo like $5 to the theater and put the name of the actor and whoever were the top three actors who got the most votes before the second act, they had to come out and then they also had to drink another beer.
Todd: Well, they'd raised so much money doing that, they just had the whole cast come back out and drink another beer. Then you're like, okay, drunk Shakespeare. I mean, really, one of the beginning of the first act, one at the beginning the second act. How bad could this be?
Todd: Then, as the second act is continuing, the Venmo code, if you sent at least $5 and you put in the name of the actor or actress, a stagehand would walk on stage and hand them a cup of beer while they were in the middle of their scene.
Todd: And people in the audience were super, super generous. It was not uncommon for the stagehand to come out and hand three or four cups of beer to one actor because their friends were in the... Friends.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Friends.
Todd: yeah
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, friends.
Todd: And then they were drinking the beer on stage. So... Things got a little derailed in the second act. There was a lot of, not a lot, but there were multiple cases of, well what what's my line? What am I doing?
Todd: That part's not bad. here's Here's where things really went off the rails, though. The audience at the beginning of the beginning of the show, they point out that heckling is welcome. This is Shakespeare. This is not... Shakespeare was used to people heckling. Okay?
Todd: Also, the bar is open during the entire show. So people were themselves getting multiple beers. Well, they weren't getting technically multiple beers. i think that would cause them their license.
Todd: Anyway, whatever. So here's what we learned.
Talkin2Todd: Because it's Utah.
Todd: If you go to drunk Shakespeare, what we learned was the cast can be drunk Or the audience can be drunk.
Todd: But if both the cast and the audience are drunk, it is not an entertaining thing. Sitting next to us, we had a guy who had lots of beers and thought he was the funniest guy out there.
Todd: Fun fact, again, live fraternity. I've dealt with many of these people. If the more you drink, the more you think you're the funniest person, you you are the least funniest person.
Todd: that the the The theater actually had to come and ask him to knock it off. Again, too much drunk.
Talkin2Todd: Yes, there's a there's yeah.
Todd: if you have the drunk if If you have the drunk audience yelling things at the sober actors to see if they can, that'd be great. Or you can have the cast completely drunk and everybody else is just behaving themselves. We we did. Anyway, however, we did watch it.
Todd: To be honest, I got done with it and I'm like, you know what? I didn't hate it. Wouldn't have mind seeing it again. One, either the audience isn't drunk or two, actually, because they had pared it down and kind of made some choices, I said, you know what? I would actually like to see this cast just do the show without the drinking because there was some interesting stuff. And eventually we got to the point of like, we're not going to understand how this exactly ends.
Todd: because the cast no longer really knows how this is going end. So, I mean, the story overall, you understand, but like the, the way the character, like you're like, well, is this show going to end or are they just, the show's going to end.
Talkin2Todd: Sure.
Todd: Are we going to get to the end of the story before the show ends? I'm not clear. Anyway, drunk Shakespeare.
Talkin2Todd: Not sure. Yeah. it sounds It sounds more like the play that goes wrong.
Todd: Yeah.
Todd: Yes, that is, There wasn't a lot of, on the play that goes wrong, however, you've got set pieces falling down. You can't do that with drunk actors.
Talkin2Todd: Yes. No, yeah, everybody's everybody's sober in that. And it's the play that's going wrong, not the play that's going wrong.
Todd: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Anyway, yes.
Todd: But Lindsay did great. We enjoyed going to see Lindsay. That is probably also the last time we will go see her in one of the drunk Shakespeare productions. But there you go. If anybody's in Salt Lake City and wants to go, I don't know.
Todd: I'll let know how to get tickets.
Talkin2Todd: Uh, so the thing, the thing I learned this week, uh, I was golfing on Thursday and, one of our regulars on Thursday afternoon couldn't play, but he sent his knee doctor to play with us.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Recently retired doctor here in Des Moines, who I had, had not met, but, uh, worked on Steve's knees, orthopedic surgeon, nice guy. We're playing along.
Talkin2Todd: And, And, um,
Talkin2Todd: something Something came up about the Drake golf outing that I referenced a couple of weeks ago that with Zach Johnson and whatever. And Ian, the doctor, said, oh, were you at that? Yeah, I was at that. Yes, you I was at that. You were at that? Yeah. Yep.
Talkin2Todd: Yep. I was on the planning committee. Yeah, it was really super great day. Really great. what's So what's your connection to Drake? And I told him and I said, well what's your connection to Drake? Well, my dad, I didn't go to Drake. I took some summer courses there, but my dad taught in the history department.
Talkin2Todd: Like, really? Wait a second. Was your dad T.K. Lynn? Yeah, I had your dad.
Talkin2Todd: Ian's 60. His dad was, I don't know, probably in his mid to late 50s when I had him. Maybe in his early 60s when I had him. But so I...
Talkin2Todd: bedroom Ian, really nice guy, had his dad at Drake, just kind of one of these small world kind of stories. And then because it's only, there were only, well, there were four of us on Thursday, but our regular golf group chat is much larger than that. I shared this story with our golf group chat that I had Ian's dad when we were at Drake together. Well, the next question was,
Talkin2Todd: So what'd you get in the class? Like, hell, I don't know. This was 35 years ago. Makes me want to go look up my transcript. So then I went back and I went and looked at my transcript. For the record, I got a B.
Todd: I was going to say it wasn't spectacular one way or the other. Again, it was spectacular one way or the other. i wrote it remembered. If not, we're goingnna we're going to take off 100% and we're going to take off an F. Somewhere in the middle.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah, otherwise, yeah. e East Asia after 1600, my sophomore year. I was in the middle of, but we knew we knew a whole bunch of the same people and referenced this professor and the other professor and whatever. And Amy and I met in one of these professor's classes. And I don't know, anyway, really nice guy and is now part of our regular golf group. But fun connection story over the last week. So that's what I learned.
Talkin2Todd: How about you?
Todd: So for the 4th of July, for the long weekend, we went down to the disclosed undisclosed location where I recorded from last time. I got there before Lisa did.
Todd: So I get down there. we have men in the house for two weeks. So after a after a long drive, have this process where, okay, get the dogs, get them in the backyard, turn the water back on, put water in their bowls. They wanted some food So go grab some of the dry food that we keep in the storage container because you don't want to leave food out while you're gone.
Todd: Get them all set up. And then I'm like, OK, everything's good. And then I'm going to go over and grab myself a drink out of our beverage fridge, which is over by the dog. And I look, and we have a we have a robot mop down there that's white. And sitting on top of the the base of the robot mop mop is a lizard inside the house.
Todd: OK. like, whoa, wait, oh, OK. And then I go look. So for fun, over the last couple of years, when we've had big lizards, we named the lizards just, right, and yeah, Fred Ethel, right?
Talkin2Todd: Yes, Fred.
Todd: OK.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah.
Todd: Well, there's another one who we have we've named, and his name's Bruce. and And we know that it's Bruce.
Todd: Bruce is not that big. Bruce is, Bruce is a, is a, you know, he's probably four inches long with his tail or so. He's not a big lizard. But the reason why we know it's Bruce is because he was at our house last year.
Todd: And at some point, and I didn't, I, it was weird. Do you look at this? So basically it looks like he has this forked tail and, At some point, what had happened was the skin around his tail sort of came out of the tail. So his skin sticks up and then the tail, which is now white, continues to grow out.
Todd: So we know it's Bruce because I've never seen any other lizard that do that does this.
Talkin2Todd: Okay.
Todd: So we're down there. In the morning, Bruce comes out. he's he's on He's on our patio sunning himself. Sometimes he'll come and look by the door whatever. And it's like, okay, there's Bruce. So now I look and there's there's a lizard in the house.
Todd: And I look and it's Bruce. And then I'm thinking, we haven't been home for two weeks. Did he come in the house and And he's now been in the house for two weeks.
Todd: So my first thought is, i wonder if he's dead. Right? Because, like, this isn't great. So I go over, I'm like, you know what? I've got to be careful because if he's if he's alive, he's going to run everywhere and I don't want that. So i I go get, like, a bowl to kind of, and I get right up close to him and he's not moving. And I'm like, okay.
Todd: Not moving. Then I look and he kind of, like, moves his head. Like, oh, now he's just incredibly lethargic. Like, oh. So what do you do? What do you do with a lizard? Like, I'm not killing Bruce.
Todd: Be clear. Like I want, I want Bruce to be okay.
Talkin2Todd: Right.
Todd: Has he had anything to eat or drink in the last two weeks? The house is not super air conditioned while we're gone, but lizards need heat and the, it is air conditioned because it's not a hundred degrees anyway. So I basically, I'm like, you know what? If he's not going to run away, I take the base of the mop. I just pick it up with him on it.
Todd: And I'm like, well, he's moving, but he's not running. Carry it outside, put it down outside. Then I think, that's not good. So then I kind of kind of get him off of that and put him under our, like let him like right next to under our grill where he spent some time.
Todd: Then I go in. And then lisa Lisa comes and then I'm telling her about that. She's like, I don't know what she's looking like. What do we what do you do? And like, oh, they could be dehydrated or whatever. And I'm like, i i don't I don't know what you want to do. And we're both like, this kind of sucks because, again, it's Bruce.
Talkin2Todd: Right. You're attached to this lizard.
Todd: A wild lizard that just lives outside her house. But it's like, hey, it's. And then the following day, we don't see him. And we're like, man, I hope he makes it. But I don't know.
Todd: Did he die? If he was lethargic and hadn't he heated up, did a predator come and like, who knows what would happen? Following day, in the afternoon, here's what I get.
Todd: Bruce is out. Hey, he's good. Found Bruce. So he needed like a day and a half, need to recover, and now Bruce is out doing Bruce things.
Talkin2Todd: To recover. Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: Another feel-good story on the pod this week.
Todd: Our hope is is that Bruce, however, stops going, hey, I wonder what's on the other side of that sliding door. Maybe he keeps a safe distance now. And and what I'm really hoping is is Bruce also tells all of his friends, don't go in the house.
Todd: You may think you want to. It may look great. What I'm telling you is just just don't. those They're nice people in there. They won't hurt you. But what I'm telling you is, just stay out here.
Todd: This is the place to be. So anyway, so what did I learn this week? Bruce is OK, at least for this week. So what what more can you want?
Talkin2Todd: you The catch and release program is active and operational.
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: The music is Happy Boy by Kevin MacLeod. You can subscribe to our award-winning podcast with visiting superior player of the match, Todd Prince, wherever you get your pods.

Todd: Okay, so you got one dude with sparky stick things in both hands, and he's got to go light fireworks.
Talkin2Todd: Right.
Todd: If he can light two every second, one with each hand, and he just starts doing that constantly every second, that will take a single person 8.33 hours to light off 60,000 shells. Okay.
Todd: You know what? After, after like the second hour, you're sitting there in your lawn chair and you're like, you know what? I think I'm done. I just, I mean, every second two shells are going up, but it's like, I don't, like I got, I got a thing to get to.
Todd: The trains are gonna, I don't, I should, are they done yet? You know what? You just walk away.
Talkin2Todd: We're going to need a team. We're gonna need
Talkin2Todd: going to need a team or or or some kind of some kind of system that would light multiple. this This seemed like an extraordinarily bad idea at hour four.
Talkin2Todd: Like, man, is my arm tired.
Todd: you
Todd: I got to pee. should've thought about that before you started. Come on. People are waiting.
Talkin2Todd: oh Oh, we're probably going to have some fireworks debris to clean up next week. Until then, we're here. We're talking to Todd.
Todd: I'm assuming after your golf outing, Ian went back and then he he texted his dad and he's like, hey, do you remember do you remember Dwayne Johnson in your class? And his dad texts back, the rock? No, I would have remembered that.
Todd: Didn't he go to Miami?
Talkin2Todd: do you want to try something else his dad passed away 10 years ago
Todd: I kind of assumed he probably did. i just, I figured the joke still works. Rest in peace.
