00:01:26
Speaker
And then a quick thank you to our sponsors, SolarScout.
00:01:31
Speaker
You guys probably heard me mention them in some of the previous episodes, but this tool is an absolute game changer.
00:01:38
Speaker
It's helping me just like go to doors and get
00:01:42
Speaker
leads at a way easier rates, ways your conversations.
00:01:48
Speaker
than probably I've ever experienced.
00:01:50
Speaker
So go check this out.
00:01:52
Speaker
It's almost like a solar cheat code.
00:01:54
Speaker
All right.
00:01:54
Speaker
No pun intended.
00:01:55
Speaker
I know there is.
00:01:56
Speaker
Bill Murphy has the solar cheat code, but this is a different type of cheat code.
00:02:00
Speaker
Go check out Solar Scout and you can we're linking them in the show notes.
00:02:05
Speaker
So all you got to do is go click the link.
00:02:07
Speaker
You can book your demo and you're going to get 15% off if you decide to try them out.
00:02:12
Speaker
But much appreciated to them.
00:02:14
Speaker
So let's jump into the show.
00:02:16
Speaker
We're going to be talking about a little story I heard.

Parallels: Overcoming Addiction and Solar Industry Challenges

00:02:20
Speaker
So recently, I have a buddy who is a recovering addict, actually, and he told me this story.
00:02:26
Speaker
He's been in recovery for a little bit.
00:02:31
Speaker
And something that is important in recovery for anyone who is going through an addiction is if you have a relapse, if you
00:02:42
Speaker
go back to whatever the addiction is, it can be easy to just like want to throw in the towel to give up to have that all or nothing mindset.
00:02:52
Speaker
Right.
00:02:52
Speaker
Maybe it's alcohol, drugs, whatever.
00:02:55
Speaker
I know a lot of the thinking can be like, OK, I just drink.
00:03:00
Speaker
Maybe I just drink a beer or whatever.
00:03:02
Speaker
I'm just going to go all out.
00:03:03
Speaker
Right.
00:03:05
Speaker
And I think it can be destructive, not only in addictions, but really anything just to have that.
00:03:10
Speaker
We shouldn't have the all or nothing mindset.
00:03:13
Speaker
right?
00:03:14
Speaker
And so he told me this story about Mount Everest that I thought was pretty cool and then also was very applicable to what we go through in solar.
00:03:24
Speaker
So I want to share that with you.
00:03:26
Speaker
But basically, the point of it is that instead of thinking, okay, this is we messed up, we're going back to square one, treat it as a bump in the road.
00:03:36
Speaker
And so here's how this relates to solar.

Mount Everest Analogy: Constant Readjustment

00:03:40
Speaker
Hang with me here.
00:03:41
Speaker
Okay, so
00:03:42
Speaker
Mount Everest, I did a little bit of research on it.
00:03:45
Speaker
It takes about two months to go top to bottom is like the average time it takes.
00:03:54
Speaker
It's not an easy truck, super high.
00:03:56
Speaker
And get this, average price costs 59 grand.
00:04:01
Speaker
So I guess start selling a lot of solar if you want to climb Mount Everest because it's going to cost you a pretty penny.
00:04:08
Speaker
But so what happened, this story that I was told by my buddy,
00:04:12
Speaker
Um, I don't know if it was like one of the first groups that went there or just like a story from, um, someone that had scaled the mountain.
00:04:20
Speaker
Um, so it takes two weeks just to get to base camp.
00:04:24
Speaker
Right.
00:04:24
Speaker
And that just gets, that's square one.
00:04:27
Speaker
Right.
00:04:27
Speaker
But then from there you have all these other little mini base camps.
00:04:31
Speaker
I think there's like four or five of them.
00:04:34
Speaker
And so he's telling me these people, they get to the base camp.
00:04:38
Speaker
They're like, sweet, made it.
00:04:40
Speaker
Nope, you got to hang out for it's like a week, just a base camp to adjust to that altitude, adjust to the how high it is, it's just breathing up there.
00:04:50
Speaker
And then you got to go to the next camp after that.
00:04:55
Speaker
And you hang out there for some amount of time.
00:04:57
Speaker
But then instead of continuing on, these people, they have to go back to base camp and readjust before they can keep scaling the mountain.
00:05:10
Speaker
And so they go, they follow this process.
00:05:12
Speaker
They go to the first camp after the base camp, they go down.
00:05:16
Speaker
Then they go to the second camp after base camp, spend a little bit of time there, then they go back down.
00:05:22
Speaker
And it's just like constantly readjusting.
00:05:25
Speaker
So it takes a lot longer because you got to adjust to the new altitude, then you got to go back.
00:05:30
Speaker
So just hearing this, I'm thinking like, OK, that's the dumbest thing I've heard.
00:05:35
Speaker
Like, why can't you just adjust for a little bit and keep going up?
00:05:38
Speaker
I don't know every single detail of this.
00:05:40
Speaker
Maybe there's different ways of doing it.
00:05:41
Speaker
This is just the story I was told.
00:05:43
Speaker
But it makes sense.
00:05:44
Speaker
I'm sure you'd have to at least spend a little bit of time at the next camp.
00:05:49
Speaker
You definitely got to adjust.
00:05:51
Speaker
But the point with this whole story was, though,
00:05:54
Speaker
It's taken a while to get to the top.
00:05:57
Speaker
You have to constantly readjust.
00:05:59
Speaker
So instead of going all the way back down, these people had to readjust just on the surface level.

Facing Setbacks: Perseverance in the Solar Industry

00:06:05
Speaker
If you're just looking at it, it looks like you're making zero progress.
00:06:10
Speaker
Right.
00:06:10
Speaker
But us knowing the facts about it, you're actually as you're going back down,
00:06:15
Speaker
These people are actually progressing because they had to have that adjustment period.
00:06:20
Speaker
They had to have that climate, the new altitude, get acclimated, I guess the word, right?
00:06:27
Speaker
So I started thinking that's something that can apply to a lot of different things, and especially in solar.
00:06:35
Speaker
Right?
00:06:35
Speaker
Like how many times do we feel like we're going backwards in solar?
00:06:38
Speaker
That's why they call it the solar coaster.
00:06:40
Speaker
Right?
00:06:41
Speaker
How many times do we go through slumps?
00:06:44
Speaker
How many times do we knock a door and feel like we forgot how to overcome an objection?
00:06:49
Speaker
I've been doing this eight years.
00:06:50
Speaker
And I can tell you there's times all the time, not as much as before.
00:06:55
Speaker
Right?
00:06:57
Speaker
But there are a lot of times where I feel like I'm almost going in reverse.
00:07:04
Speaker
But it's not that way.
00:07:05
Speaker
Right.
00:07:05
Speaker
There's always progress being made as long as we keep pressing forward.
00:07:09
Speaker
And sometimes it's going to be like that.
00:07:11
Speaker
Sometimes we're going to feel like we're going in backwards.
00:07:14
Speaker
Sometimes we're not going to feel like we're not progressing at all.
00:07:17
Speaker
But that is part of each of our journeys in the solar industry.

Team Structure and Personal Struggles

00:07:22
Speaker
Whether you're building the company, whether you're running a team, whether you're brand new to solar, you just got to understand that these things can take time.
00:07:32
Speaker
Maybe you're just learning to close a deal.
00:07:35
Speaker
It's going to feel like you just went down two base camps and you have to come back up.
00:07:39
Speaker
You have to adjust to that new elevation.
00:07:43
Speaker
Maybe you're learning to get referrals.
00:07:46
Speaker
You're going to have to acclimate to that.
00:07:49
Speaker
Maybe you're learning how to better manage your pipeline.
00:07:52
Speaker
Maybe you're learning how to better lead a team, which is actually one of my struggles right now, is I'm acclimating to better structure my team and have better organization.
00:08:03
Speaker
I'm a guy that struggles with a lot of things being organized.
00:08:06
Speaker
So I'm currently trying to figure out how to better lead a team, better organize it, better motivate my guys,
00:08:14
Speaker
and better recruits.

The Value of Mentorship

00:08:15
Speaker
Those are some things that I feel like I'm at base camp level one.
00:08:19
Speaker
I'm acclimating and I'm slowly building in.
00:08:23
Speaker
So whatever it is you're struggling with, whatever it is you're trying to learn, whatever it is you're going through, just remember, even if you fail, even if things are going terrible, maybe that's just your little slip up if you're comparing it to an addiction or something.
00:08:38
Speaker
But hey, that doesn't mean you're not making progress.
00:08:40
Speaker
That just means you're getting acclimated,
00:08:43
Speaker
That just means maybe you had to go back down to the base camp below you.
00:08:47
Speaker
You had to adjust a little bit and then you're going to keep going up.
00:08:52
Speaker
So hopefully this message resonates with anyone that is maybe struggling, maybe feeling like you've put some time in solar, you've seen some success.
00:09:01
Speaker
Maybe you're in a slump.
00:09:03
Speaker
Just remember.
00:09:04
Speaker
you're going to keep progressing.
00:09:06
Speaker
The only people who fail at this are the people who give up.
00:09:10
Speaker
And that is why it is, I think, important to have a good coach, have a good mentor.
00:09:16
Speaker
We talked a little bit about that in the previous episode.
00:09:19
Speaker
Make sure you get around people that can build you up, that can encourage you.
00:09:23
Speaker
Get someone that has been through the trenches before, knows how to go up and scale the mountains, scale the Mount Everest, so to speak.

Teaser: Mac Bjorn's Solar Journey

00:09:33
Speaker
That's why they call this the solar coaster.
00:09:35
Speaker
And we next episode, we're going to have someone that I think is a great example of this.
00:09:40
Speaker
He's actually been in our coaching program for, I think, coming up on eight or nine months now.
00:09:47
Speaker
His name is Mac Bjorn.
00:09:49
Speaker
This guy has gone through some ups and downs in solar.
00:09:52
Speaker
He's definitely been to some base camps, gone down to some base camps, but he's made an insane amount of progress.
00:10:00
Speaker
And I've actually learned a lot from him, just myself, coaching him and helping him.
00:10:05
Speaker
He's taught me a lot as well.
00:10:07
Speaker
And so he actually did a podcast.
00:10:09
Speaker
He shared a lot of his journey up
00:10:11
Speaker
the proverbial Mount Everest of solar.
00:10:15
Speaker
And then he's also got some sweet nuggets on how to reduce cancellations.
00:10:21
Speaker
I think he's become a pro at this.
00:10:23
Speaker
Something he's really mastered is getting the glass to roof.
00:10:26
Speaker
He's starting to sell at a really high volume, but his retention is off the charts.
00:10:31
Speaker
So make sure you tune in.
00:10:32
Speaker
He's going to be coming on the next episode, dropping some bombs.
00:10:36
Speaker
And in the meantime, if you would like additional coaching,
00:10:40
Speaker
We do have a few spots still open for that.
00:10:43
Speaker
Won't be open for much longer.
