Hello, welcome everybody to another episode of the Uncommon Wealth Podcast, where i'm your host, Philip Ramsey. Super excited to be back. It's been a while, been a little hiatus, had to kind of go to the library, regroup, ah been building, been rehabbing, repurposing a building, completely remodeling it. It's been a beast.
00:00:50
Speaker
But we got the microphone back. So here I am doing a podcast. Again, we had to kind of just repurpose some old podcasts, but this one's live. This one's new.
Divine Inspiration and Personal Experiences
00:01:00
Speaker
One that I'm super excited about. And I have like six like in my head that I really want to get out. But this one um specifically came from I feel like what God is trying to teach me right now. And a couple different things.
00:01:13
Speaker
I guess scenarios or examples of this. And it just kept kind of coming up. So here is the podcast that I think is what the Lord has been putting on my
Orbis Program and Career Exploration
00:01:22
Speaker
heart, at least. So, I'll start this conversation by I got to do this high school thing where here in Ankeny, Iowa, they try to do a good job of giving you kind of a um a good career path. Instead of just showing you an education, there's a thing called Orbis. And when you're in Orbis, in a student Orbis, they try to give you good opportunities. If you wanted to be a teacher, they help you job shadow.
00:01:45
Speaker
It can help you kind of try to figure out your career path before you jump into college. I think that's a really cool thing. So I try to help as much as I can. So this thing is called Orbis. And so I went and it was called Rising Tides, where you try to kind of network with kids. And really, it's just an example or they're trying to help students talk to adults.
00:02:07
Speaker
especially with today's technology and all the different screens. They want to try to get them out and and having conversations with adults.
Passion vs Career: The Fear of Losing Love
00:02:16
Speaker
But this one specific person, I sat down and I asked her, hey, what do you want to do? She said, well, I want to be an interior designer.
00:02:25
Speaker
Or maybe I really have a strong passion in call it like doing like what is it like cooking and baking and, and all the different things like that. So I was like, well, that's awesome. And she's like, my biggest fear, if I made that a career, then I would lose my passion. And I was like, wow, her name was Asia. So I was like, Asia, that's really cool that you have two. And it's really astute and wise that you think that maybe something that's you're passionate about might not be the best thing to make a career out of because you could lose your passion. And when your passions and your giftings don't necessarily line up, um that's one thing. So like if you're working at, I hate to pick on Wells Fargo people because I just talked to somebody that loved his job at Wells Fargo. But let's say you work at Wells Fargo and you're super excited about cooking and baking and being a chef.
00:03:22
Speaker
But you end up going to work at Wells Fargo and you can't stop thinking about all the different dishes you would make and all the different things and like it might not line up. I don't know. um Or I talked to somebody at Wells Fargo that was really wanted to be an opera singer like that was his deal.
00:03:38
Speaker
Um, but he knew that like in this season, it was right after COVID. He was like, it's not the time to go sing. So he was at Wells Fargo, but this individual, she wanted to be interior designer. And she was like, I can make a career out of that, but I still have this thing on the side that I really enjoy. And I think I could do that, but I don't want to lose my passion. So, all right. So that
Coulter Wall Concert: Observations on Burnout
00:03:59
Speaker
was one story. But before that, my daughter and I went to a performer,
00:04:05
Speaker
His name was Coulter Wall. um If you know him, you know him. Has got a really unique voice. Sings country. And I'm not the biggest country fan, but I really like this gentleman's voice. So we go to Peoria, Illinois, my daughter and i and we get to see Coulter Wall perform. And it was a great show. He is super talented. He's just super talented.
00:04:27
Speaker
And so it was really fun. to it was basically my daughter's first real concert. So we go. Have a great time. And, and at the end, Coulter and all his like little musicians come out, um, do their last song. They go out and we keep clapping. And, and my daughter's like, why we keep clapping? I'm like, that's just what you do. It's just an encore. They, they come back out and then they sing a song.
00:04:55
Speaker
And so that's what we did. So we kept kind of cheering for him. And then, and then they, he, he came out and then performed one other song. The cool part about this was I like Colter Wall a lot, but I'm not like a huge raging fan. So I got to, and so does LeRae, we got to kind of take a step back and watch and observe the audience and how he interacted. um So I wasn't like totally dialed in um to necessarily like losing myself, but I was aware of the situation. There was a couple of times where people in the crowd were kind of yelling like, play this song, play that song. And, and I just felt like it, it felt like a circus monkey a little bit, like do a backflip, eat the banana.
00:05:39
Speaker
And I was like, o if I was a an artist, one, I think it's a hard job because they have to sing those songs so many times. But anyway, it just kind of struck me. So we watch him. He comes out. he does his encore. And before he leaves or before the song ends in the encore, he puts his guitar down and leaves.
00:06:01
Speaker
Just walks off. And I was like, that's weird. And Lorraine doesn't know any different. Right. So she's kind of like, well, I don't know. Okay. But usually what happens in Encore, they wait till the song's done. They get out of the band. They kind of bow. They wave. They thank you. And and they move on.
00:06:18
Speaker
That's not what Coulter did. He put his guitar down and just walked off. I wouldn't say stormed off, but walked off. And afterwards, I was like, LeRae, that's not necessarily normal. like i i wonder how he's doing. like It just seemed a little off to me. and We paid $150 each, and it was a pretty packed house. I'd say packed.
00:06:39
Speaker
i don't know, packed, but it was, I couldn't see any open spots necessarily. So a lot of people had spent one, their time and their money to watch him and he just walks off. Okay.
00:06:49
Speaker
So then two days later, Leray texts me because she's more and involved than I am. And this is what Colter Wall's Instagram read.
00:07:01
Speaker
Myself and the band and the crew are very grateful for the privilege to play music together for you. We thank you for it. The truth is that I'm not mentally well, or I'm mentally unwell. Despite this, I have pushed myself to continue touring.
00:07:18
Speaker
As a result, my mental health has not has only further declined. After discussion with my team, we have decided to cancel the remaining shows and take an indefinite hiatus from live music.
00:07:30
Speaker
Thank you for your understanding and support. Tickets will be refunded and automatically. you know If you've bought tickets, they'll be refunded. Okay. Holy cow. So it got me thinking a little bit. And this was before the conversation with Asia, because you know that and I would almost say like, dude, it'd be awesome be a rock star. And that's what you think.
00:07:50
Speaker
And I'm sure Coulter was like, if I could just perform every day of my life, I would love it. And he got there and he burnt himself out. It seems like mentally it was obviously not doing well.
00:08:03
Speaker
So what happens when you feel like you want to make a career out of a passion and then that passion turns to like, this doesn't feel good anymore. What do you do?
00:08:13
Speaker
And how do you try to protect yourself and put boundaries up so maybe your passion doesn't? I think for this example, and I'm making a lot of assumptions, so forgive me. If Colter Wall ever listens to this, dude, I love you on the show, we would be fun to just hash this out because I'm fascinated about this. In fact, I've interviewed two people who sold their business and then after three or four weeks, or maybe it was like six weeks, it was a little bit longer, they both had a mental breakdown. Like, what happened there?
00:08:44
Speaker
ah Because you would think that this is what I want. Like, I want to be performing in front of everybody that I can every day, every night. I never get tired. of it And yet they do get tired of it. So what is that? Is it that he's not passionate enough? Is it wasn't excited about I don't think so. I just think the boundaries weren't there. And he just kept pushing to the point where i think a lot of those band members obviously rely on Coulter to have a very solid, healthy relationship.
00:09:11
Speaker
mindset and he just fritzed out like he just was he's tapped out and maybe it's because people are yelling hey sing this song sing that song or he's done singing all the songs i don't know but it got me thinking Okay, so then, this is a long story, but then my family and I got the opportunity to go on
Contrasting Performer Attitudes
00:09:29
Speaker
a cruise, seven-day cruise. It was ah it was a riot.
00:09:32
Speaker
i still can't figure out if I like cruises or not because I feel like I eat too much, and I always feel like I'm missing out. it feels like everybody else is having a lot more fun than I am. Anyway, but there's there's performers on the ship.
00:09:45
Speaker
And it's not like we paid for these people. you know like We just kind of go and show up, and then it ah feels a little bit like, do a backflip, monkey. like Just entertain us. like It feels just very weird to me. But here we are. So we're watching these people perform, and I'm telling you, like these people are giving it their all. like They're doing the deal. And I'm like, okay, what's the difference here?
00:10:05
Speaker
Like, Coulter Wall, we paid pretty good money to go and see. The cruise, we obviously paid... money, but it wasn't like we actually were like, Oh, I can't wait for this performer to sing. So it's not like we were like eagerly leaning forward and like hooting and hollering. It was kind of like we were being entertained and yet they had a great attitude. Like there was one guy specifically, he was singing 70s to eighty s Hey, Drew, if you listen to it,
00:10:30
Speaker
You did great. Not my genre either, but like he was doing it and he was interacting with the crowd and the band members. Like it was a very different feel.
00:10:40
Speaker
And yet it was almost like the crowd didn't appreciate him. And yet he was like having the time of his life up there. Like, so I really appreciate it In fact, I reached out to him on Instagram. Seems like a great guy. um And also he's cruising around with us you know in Bahamas or in Western Caribbean. So it's kind of cool. that We never really talked on the ship, but afterwards we've been kind of going back and forth on on Instagram, which is fun. But what what an interesting career path that got him to be an entertainer on a ship. Now, I don't know that the... pecking order of all the entertainers. Like, I don't know if that would be like something that i'm like, dude, that's where I want to be. That's the pinnacle. And yet he was out there giving it his all and all the performers were doing a great job. So no matter what your opportunity is, if it's your passion and you're excited about it and you like, can't wait, like, and you're doing it every day, you have to know that that's something God's gifted you for sure, because it's not easy to do. Wake up every day and do the same thing.
00:11:40
Speaker
and be enthusiastic about it. But here at Uncommon Wealth, I'm super grateful to be able to do this, and I've been doing it for, were decided about 15 years, and every conversation I have, it's a brand new person doing new things with their financial goals or or whatever they want to do with their life. They're using their money as a tool, and then we get to put a financial plan together to help them get there, and I get to watch it. I get a front row seat of all these different families and what they're trying to accomplish.
00:12:08
Speaker
Awesome. Okay. So we do have ah ah like an end to this. Okay. So my, my daughter, as I've mentioned before, super excited about music right now. And earlier this week, she went to another concert.
00:12:21
Speaker
She was so excited. Her and her friend, her best friend, she gets to, they get to go up and do this concert. Guess what this concert, who who it was? Bob Dylan. like the Bob Dylan, like the old Bob Dylan, like 84 years old Bob Dylan.
00:12:36
Speaker
And I asked her, I was like, Hey, why do you think Bob Dylan like is performing? And before I was like, how was it? And she was like, it was crazy. She likes Bob Dylan. I don't even know if I like Bob Dylan, but she does. She's awesome person. Leray's great.
00:12:50
Speaker
Super like it's fun. So she was like, it was just amazing to see somebody of that caliber, like maybe one of his last times, who knows he's older like that. So I asked her, why do you think he's still performing? And she's like, I think he has to.
00:13:04
Speaker
And i don't know if that's right or wrong, but the way that she perceived the way he was entertaining felt like he had to, there was no encore. Let's just say that he came out in like a, not a track suit, but like kind of like athletic clothes with a hood up played.
00:13:20
Speaker
And she was like, it was awesome. He still has a great voice and still is talented. And then just gets up and no one knew it was the end. It just walks off. So like, It did feel a little Colter Wall-ish, I think, to Luray. So this is her second concert, and she's seeing people like not enjoying what they're doing. And so here's my end kind of, i don't know, crescendo.
00:13:42
Speaker
If you're doing what you're doing every day and you don't like it, like there's a different plan. There's, there might be a different
Pursuing Joyful and Fulfilling Careers
00:13:48
Speaker
plan for you. Maybe I should say that if you want to explore that, I'd love to help you do that. If you want to just organize your finances in a, in a very unique way or more efficient way, we obviously do that.
00:13:59
Speaker
But if you're sitting there and you feel like this is what my life came to, like, that's probably why people have midlife crises is because they start sitting there and they're like, this is it. Like,
00:14:10
Speaker
Today iss never too late. like We can always change your future. That's what we do here at Uncommon Wealth, as you know, is we get to sit down with people and get them excited about the future. No matter how much time they have or what they have in the past, hey, let's just sit down ah and and talk to see where you're going, see how we can use it as money as a tool to get you there.
00:14:29
Speaker
Okay, there it is. There's my soapbox. um There's a lot in that podcast. So i don't know if it's exciting to you or not, but if it is, we'd love to talk. We'd love to hear what's going on in your world.
00:14:40
Speaker
And until next time, go be uncommon. Thanks for listening.
