Here it is! The super not-so-secret 100 ½ bonus episode where we hit up a series of questions that just didn’t quite make the primetime show. In this episode Phillip and Bryan tell us their ideal theme song for the show, which podcasts they listen to, and what has surprised them about podcasting. Also, why they got started podcasting, how it’s going, and where they want to go next.

The Dream of an Uncommon Life

00:00:02
Speaker
Everyone dreams about living an uncommon life, but how we define that dream is very different for each of us. And for most, it's a lifelong pursuit.

Introduction to the Podcast

00:00:11
Speaker
Welcome to the Uncommon Life Project podcast. We're going to introduce you to people who are living that life or enjoying the journey to get there. We're going to also give you some tools, tricks, and tips for starting or accelerating your own efforts to live an uncommon life, a life worth celebrating and savoring.
00:00:30
Speaker
Please welcome your hosts, Brian Dewhurst and Philip Ramsey.

Celebrating the 100th Episode

00:00:45
Speaker
Here's the thing. This is the bonus content. We did the hundredth episode and now we're moving into the extra special grandma's attic questions that nobody gets unless you are also subscribed as a normal person on the podcast. I don't know how to make it any more special. So we're just going to put the word bonus in front of it and say you get a little extra taste at the end.
00:01:04
Speaker
Let's go. Okay. So definitely would encourage you to go back and listen to that

Audience Engagement and Impact

00:01:09
Speaker
100th episode. I thought it was great. We had a chance to talk through like, you know, it's cool to see numbers. You don't spend a lot of time on it, but it's good. It's cool to see some tangible means that say, Hey man, folks are taking this in. We're not sitting in a room looking at each other just for kicks.
00:01:23
Speaker
For this is providing a benefit So we got to talk about kind of how people are taking it in some of the great guests boy What a good lineup if you're just cooking up with the show and you're like boy, what do I start? There's a hundred episodes to go back Lots of good options. Jesse Cole shows a good one. Yep, like all kinds of folks just to go back and check out So get your pin out if you're doing pins Yeah, if you keep notes in your phone, you're gonna wait or you're gonna speak it in there Don't be writing it down while you're driving
00:01:46
Speaker
It's right. Don't do that. Don't put your Volvo in a tree for the back episodes.

Meet the Hosts: Philip and Brian

00:01:51
Speaker
I'll put it in the notes. So anyway, I am in studio with Philip Ramsey and Brian Dewhurst. You may or may not know us. If you started with the bonus episode, congratulations to you, sir, madam. That's bold. It's bold to start with the bonus. That is.
00:02:08
Speaker
Yeah. In fact, I like it. That's what I like it. That's right. I like this already. This podcast is for you. So anyway, we're going to pick up and the goal is to kind of hone in on some, just some extra questions around kind of where's, where are we coming? Where are we going? Um, how's the process been that kind of thing, uh, on the a hundredth, uh, podcast bonus bonus.

Choosing a Theme Song

00:02:27
Speaker
All right. That's right. Um, so
00:02:30
Speaker
One of the things we talked about in the last episode was the lady who does the intro and the names. We're retiring that. It's Bertha. We all decided. It's Bertha. That's what it was. It's a surprise to you. You didn't see it coming. But I do wonder if you've ever spent any mind bandwidth on if you had to choose a song that you would put in there that exemplifies the podcast, the theme song that you could use, what would it be?
00:02:55
Speaker
Oh man, I am not the music guy. What is that song? Yeah, I'm like that guy of like, I know there's a song, but I'm not going to be able to name it. Was it? Okay. Is it? I mean, give me a genre. Is it like moral haggard? I'm kind of, I'm kind of, I don't know, I guess I'm not, I shouldn't be worried to admit this, but I'm kind of like in a little bit of a Jay-Z.
00:03:16
Speaker
Okay. Oh, wow. Okay. I'll rock it right now. This is a safe place, Brian. It is. Come on out. Come on out. Empire State of Mind. Okay. Is kind of where I'm at right now. Okay. Yeah. And you say someone takes in that, they're like, they got the vibe right. Yeah. This is riding into the show correctly. Riding dirty. Yeah. I'm ready to do life. I'm ready to play at a higher level. I want to take action. Yeah. Let's go. Okay. Brian's on it. What is the artist's name? Like I told somebody before we started this, Hey, this is what I want it to be like.
00:03:47
Speaker
Yeah. Do you remember? Is it the white stripes? Black keys, black keys. The black keys. There's some songs there that's like, oh baby. Yeah, because we were trying to get the black keys song and it was like a lot of money. Yeah, and we didn't realize that. Like, you know. Right. You don't know this. You just want black keys on my front of my podcast. Yeah, that's right. And have Bertha walk me in. That's right. Yeah.
00:04:08
Speaker
Yeah. Okay, so the Black Keys and the little Jay-Z. Yeah. Okay. Hey, we're interested here. So like, if you've listened to the podcast and you're like, you know, I got the perfect song, we would love to hear it. Now, if they want to send that to you, what's the email address? Podcast at uncommonwealth.com. There it is. There it is. Come on out. We would love to hear that. And if this is your first bonus, if this is your first episode with Uncommon Life Project and it's bonus, I want to know that too.
00:04:33
Speaker
Yeah, I took it, I did the bold thing. Send me a sticker. We'll send you something. We'll get a cup. We'll get a cup and a book. We've been talking about the swag pack. Yeah, we need it. Okay, I mean, I could use free stuff. I might email under a pseudonym. Yeah, please do. I'll get you. After this, I'm gonna get you some. So, again, 100 episodes in, what has, has anything surprised you about podcasting? Something you either didn't expect or like learned from or whatever, what has taken you by surprise?
00:05:01
Speaker
I'm not going to go first on this because I think you answered first on this. The complexity of the audio is blown me away. I understand now why this is a major in college and I have the utmost respect for people who understand this. You think you could just plug in a microphone and record a show and I am here to tell you that is not how it works.
00:05:22
Speaker
That's probably not true. I think they could. If you wanted one microphone, fine. You're fine. You want two or three? You get a college degree person. Or Ben Foust, everyone. Ben Foust. It's so odd. Actually, I've helped a number of people set up podcasts. You read articles and whatever it seems like, yes, you can just give me a good microphone and plug it in. And that's totally cool. You can get off the ground with something that sounds pretty good with that set up. But as soon as you want to start balancing, folks, you've got three people in a room. You want to bring stuff in and out.
00:05:52
Speaker
Can't say goodbye. Yeah, it just jumps off the mountain. Yeah. I can't tell you how much time, like probably more so Philip wasted of like just trying to figure out the cords and the software and the, it was mind numbing actually at a point where we were just like, should we even keep

Technical Evolution of the Podcast

00:06:09
Speaker
doing this? Cause it's so complicated. Well, let's just, I just want to just replay this quick because at the beginning you guys need to know that Brian and I huddled around one microphone.
00:06:18
Speaker
The old Yeti. The Yeti. The Yeti. Yes, and we were back and forth. We were basically like... We were touching knees. For sure. It was like... Basically touching... Knee on knee. Yeah. Basically. But that was a fun... That's awesome. We started from the bottom, now we're here. And that's where COVID started, right? Yeah.
00:06:34
Speaker
Now you don't, you can't see the studio, but we have like a spider web of microphones and it's, it looks more like a studio. That does. Now I'll tell you, I've been in here a few different times and every time I come in here, I might plug a different wire in. I might move some things around and then when I come back, it's all kind of restreatened up, like kneaded up, tied together. Someone's been in here, sweeping. Yes. Yes. Yeah. That's me. That's me. Yeah. So the spider is true and Ben has helped us re-remence this thing. If we didn't have this, we'd be on one microphone, knees touching.
00:07:04
Speaker
And the thing I would say to to your credit is we literally just shoot the show That's all we really do and you take care of the rest. So if we have anything and it's it's been yeah Thank you for all that you do for us because I feel like we have the easy part truthfully And it's funny because I like what I do. I feel like I got the easy part. This is how things get done Wow. Yeah, you do the magic. I do the magic magic happens. We don't pay enough All right, so
00:07:32
Speaker
We talked about what surprised you about podcasting and you covered some of this in your first show, but like, I kind of want to go back to what caused you to start podcasting. And maybe there's like a, there's like a macro answer, but then there's, there has to be a moment to where you're like, okay, I think we are actually going to do that. Oh, that's good. And then how are you doing with the reasons you started podcasting? Do you feel like you're meeting? Um, you got places to

Purpose and Unique Stories

00:07:57
Speaker
grow. Like what are your, what are your thoughts?
00:07:58
Speaker
Yeah, I wanted to start the podcast first, and I think the person that recommended us to do the podcast first was like, hey.
00:08:05
Speaker
The reality is there's not a lot of people who really want to just sit down with advisors, financial advisors. And so how about we start a podcast where they can engage you and they can realize like, oh, why? They're not that bad. And so that's the reason why I wanted to. And then also just get some of these stories out that are uncommon that we know about and that we wanted to encourage other people about. So for that, I'd say it's hit its mark. But I'm a pretty much performance-driven guy. I don't know. It's wrong. I'll just be honest.
00:08:34
Speaker
But I told Brian and it always kept changing. The field goal kept changing. Hey, when we get somebody that has never heard of us, like reach out to us, I'll feel like we've, we've figured. No, at first I was like, whoever recommended the podcast to us, when he tells us we did a good job, I'll feel like we've done a good job. Well, that happened pretty quick. Um, which he was probably lying, but anyway, uh, it happened nonetheless. It happened nonetheless. And then I was like, no.
00:08:59
Speaker
This is what really I'll know what success look like, is when somebody reaches out to us to be a client, and we have never heard of their name. And somebody did. And I remember that was Craig Landis. It was awesome. And then he ended up helping us, he was a ghostwriter, helping us write our first book. So kind of a cool story. Very cool. But anyway, that's nice.
00:09:21
Speaker
Yeah, I think I think for me it was Philip is so talented you know people the question I get about Philip I kind of stage it this way is like is he really liked it all the time yeah yeah and I can honestly say he is it's kind of frustrating sometimes honestly because he's like one of the most consistent and like
00:09:38
Speaker
highest moral ethical people I've ever met. And so he is like this all the time. And it is a big benchmark, which is good. It's good to be around people that are better than you, smarter than you, faster than you, whatever. So in that, I think for me, it was like, how do we create an environment where more of that, like more of what we do comes out
00:10:00
Speaker
Because we were spending lots of time with people, and not that that's a bad thing, but you just only have so much time in life. So we want to reach a lot of people with this message. We want to help people monetize their passion, understand that this can be real. You can do these things.
00:10:16
Speaker
And I think money is, especially in like the financial circles, like there's so much talk about Roth IRA or mutual funds or index funds. I think that's so saturated. And so it was like, no, there's so many other ways you can make money or build wealth or have fun or design the life you want to live.
00:10:32
Speaker
And so it was like, let's talk about that. From a compliance standpoint, we can't even really, we're not even really supposed to talk about the stock market or investing or any of that because then you're just like, you got plaster disclosures everywhere. So it was like, let's just stay away from that. Obviously we do that and our clients know that we do that, but let's talk about all this other stuff that people are doing or leveraging to build wealth and to design the life they want to live.
00:10:57
Speaker
Well, I think it's very interesting on two different fronts, like you've got where people have a mistrust for financial advisors and nothing says, hey, I'm not trying to sell you anything because I'm given this information away for free. We're here because we want it to get out. And I think also there is a perception that people have unfairly about themselves that they can't understand it, that they can't actually take it in and that all the real knowledge is behind Fort Knox somewhere.
00:11:22
Speaker
Right. And so by cranking up the big, thick steel door and going, no, I mean, it's not like this stuff isn't kind of heady that you, you have to have someone help you, but like most people are able to put pieces together if they knew the pieces were there. Right. And so I think, I think there's, that's been a real help about the podcast itself is it does, it opens that door a bit and says, look, everyone's, it's kind of like the resume, like everything's entitled to this information. Let's all take it in. Right. And then let's do some work with it.
00:11:47
Speaker
When you look at the millionaire next door type book, where it's like the guy down the street that owns eight eightplexes, he doesn't have a business teaching people how to get eight eightplexes. He might mentor someone in his family or someone that knows kind of inside how he actually built his wealth.
00:12:06
Speaker
And so that was a real, I think, advantage that we had is that we can understand the numbers, the benefits, and the taxes, and the corporate structure to getting eight eightplexes. And then we have a client, well, they want eight eightplexes. They have that idea, but the people in their circle aren't supporting that. Like, what are you, crazy? You're gonna go just change toilets all the time? And so,
00:12:31
Speaker
That's really what I think the podcast is highlighted to is like, no, you can have a financial plan that incorporates eight, eight plexus and it's going to be other stuff too. Yeah. How does all that fit together? That's right. And, and so that's kind of been, I think, you know, what we wanted to unpack and highlight. There's so many different ways to make money and you can get help with it. Like you don't have to be on an Island and I think so many entrepreneurs and business owners are on an Island. Definitely. Yeah.
00:12:54
Speaker
And so it was just like, no, you can have a co-pilot like this, you're not crazy, and we can incorporate this into a plan. That's right. It doesn't mean you're a poor entrepreneur because you use a tax man, because someone helps you set up your business. You can just be a person with an idea and a passion.
00:13:10
Speaker
that dog can hunt. And it does seem like the uncommon, like is the beacon of hope of like, oh, there's other people like me out there. And so that's been really encouraging for us. And I would say even bigger than us as the brand, the brand is becoming something bigger than we've ever thought. It was the uncommon wealth partners. And so hiring people has been scaling, like we're trying to scale the business up too. How do we impact more people? And so we are on the journey with our clients, which our clients really

Brand Growth and Client Journey

00:13:38
Speaker
appreciate that.
00:13:39
Speaker
Um, so I think to back to your question, do I feel like it's nailed its mark? Yeah. You know, like anytime Brian and I get in a room, I feel like we're going to try to land a plane. Yeah. Whether it's in the right field or not, we're going to be excited. That's the land. You know, that's not a crash.
00:13:54
Speaker
Yeah, right, right. So if you had to, we kind of talked about during the 100th episode, who'd be the ideal get? Can we talk about a topic though? Is there a topic that you can't get enough of? You can't get enough to hear people talk about it or to see how people are interacting with it or how it impacts the world? Is there a topic that's on your mind all the time that you just, you want to keep talking? I don't know what Phillips is. Oh gosh, I would love to hear, because I have one too.
00:14:22
Speaker
I think Phillips's leadership or relationship, Phillips superpower is helping people have hard conversations and doing it with an ease and an effortlessness of like, I can't believe we just did like that was
00:14:39
Speaker
You know, cause we make it up in our mind of like, it's this monumental, you know, it's like Goliath, like, how in the heck am I going to get through this? And then Philip kind of just grabs your hand and like, oh, we're just going to go walk right over here. And then, oh, okay. I didn't realize it would be that painless. And so, but yeah, I think through his ability to communicate and leadership and lead people and hold people's hand through it in such a loving way, like that is his,
00:15:06
Speaker
content or that is his, what he takes in or would take in. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's good. Here's what I would say. Those are good. I would like, I love vulnerability. I don't care what it is. I don't care how big you're struggling. Just let's get vulnerable. Yeah. I can't get enough of it.
00:15:23
Speaker
I don't care what it is. I'm feeling shame. Well, let's talk through it. You know, like that's okay. Like I feel anger. Okay. Let's talk through that. Yeah. And so it's been really good. Cause I mean, it's funny to hear Brian talk about me like that. It's like, who is he talking about? Like that's not me, but, but in that having
00:15:39
Speaker
to be able to have like Brian help them. That's the biggest thing. Like, yeah, let's be vulnerable, but now what

Bitcoin's Philosophical Impact

00:15:44
Speaker
are we going to do without Brian? We're not going to go that far. We're just going to talk about our feelings, but with Brian, it's going to be like, no, we're going to have some actionable steps here to move forward. And so to me, when people start talking about vulnerability, it's when that is where, and Brian, I can contest. So when we're in like a meeting, it seems like the people who've never heard of us before, which is getting fewer and fewer, but the people have never heard of us. It seems like 25 minutes in the meeting, 25 to 40.
00:16:08
Speaker
It'll go something a little like some, are you really want to know what I want? Yeah. That's why we're here. That's what we've been waiting for. Yeah. And then they, they like tell us this, this idea that they've had that they haven't talked about for a while. And that's when we're like, now we can start the meeting. Like now we want to talk through that, you know? And so it's been fun. You're the second cup of coffee folk.
00:16:26
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. We're waiting for the wall to come down. My topic right now would just be Bitcoin. You know, I say Jesus and Bitcoin are the two most important things in the world right now. And that's kind of what I'm most excited about. And I think we're at an inflection point in our country, you know, where we need to talk about it more. Yeah. Both of them.
00:16:47
Speaker
Actually, I was going to say that I think that that has come across on a number of episodes. And I think it's what comes across clearly is that like, this isn't just a it's not just a financial conversation. It's a there's a philosophical one in there. There's a government structure and it forces you to start to understand history helps forces you to understand monetary policy forces you to understand slavery, interest and power and all that. Yeah, it's, it's
00:17:16
Speaker
politics like it forces you into so many different conversations and you know it's kind of like the matrix of the red pill and the blue pill and like once you take that once you take the bitcoin pill and you start going down this thing it becomes not about money or oh i'm going to be rich or you know whatever it's no like where is our country headed where is our world headed like where what are we doing here that's right and i think so many decisions are getting made right now
00:17:43
Speaker
They're just like, how did they decide that? It's not one degree off. It's like 180 degrees off. And no matter what political clash you're in or all this stuff, and it's just kind of like, it does come back to the money. Yeah.
00:17:58
Speaker
And if the money is not sound and the money is inflated, all these things permeate from that. Yeah. And Bitcoin forces you to start to understand that. Yeah, that's right. You can tell Brian understands the Bitcoin. I'm just here for the vulnerability.
00:18:14
Speaker
I want everyone to know that I don't know about the Bitcoin. Yes. I got a friend that does, though. In fact, I say the Bitcoin. That's how I introduce it, just so everyone knows where I'm at. On Twitter, a lot of people call it the corn. Yeah. Well played. What's motivating you right now?

Leadership and Personal Values

00:18:32
Speaker
Like, in this moment, bonus episode off of 100, what's motivating you right now?
00:18:37
Speaker
Yeah, leadership, Brian's 100% right on that. I think leadership matters. I think that just the way that you conduct yourself, your character matters. And as we start getting into, I think, just very interesting times. Yeah. At the end of the day, the only thing you have is your character.
00:18:56
Speaker
And like Jesus, right? But your faith, character, leadership and how you lead your family and how you conduct yourself is really what it boils down to for me of what I'm super passionate about now. It's like, where's your faith at? Where's your family at? And then where are the people and how are you impacting those around you? And so that to me is where I'm kind of leading.
00:19:17
Speaker
Yeah. And I'd say what I said about Phillip earlier about, you know, leading people through tough conversations and like helping people frame these things in for maybe a more of like a communication or relational or emotional place. I migrate there from more of the, you know, the money capital, you know, I just got off a call with someone like, I feel like the sky is falling. Like, what should I, like, should I be buying like,
00:19:43
Speaker
Freezers of beef and like a generator like, you know, people are really having those thoughts right now. So for me I meet people in that from more of a You know tactical like hey, this is what I'm doing. This is what I think is gonna happen I think these are ways you could prepare. Yep, but also the massive opportunity that we have You know, yeah, so I just think there's a massive opportunity we have a big vision of where we want to go not only with the podcast but the business and you know that that path is clear and so I
00:20:12
Speaker
Yeah, awesome. All right, let's see. Let's do one more. All right, one more. The bonus content has to end. It does, unfortunately. A baker's dozen does eventually stop. We're gonna get to 200 and Ben's coming back. I'm coming back. I'm gonna start working on questions. So you guys have been leading podcasts, and I know you guys maybe have done some on the other side, but you have a preference.

Roles as Interviewers vs. Interviewees

00:20:37
Speaker
You like being the interviewer or the interviewee?
00:20:40
Speaker
Wow. Which side of the mic you prefer to sit on? Wow. Go ahead. I think we're opposite on this. I prefer to be interviewed. I would say you prefer to interview.
00:20:50
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. I've had some really fun ones to be interviewed and I think we've had fun. To me, just, this sounds horrible. Give me a microphone and we're gonna. Whichever side you want Philip to be on. I'll go wherever. I'm speaking, just put something in front of my face. Yeah, it is fun to be able to share the uncommon life with other people or the uncommon wealth partners. And like, because it's kind of, for me, it's the financial services that I wish it always was there. Like, and I think,
00:21:18
Speaker
Inherently, there's other people who are like, oh my goodness, there's people out there that just helps me like increase my cash flow. Like this is revolutionary. And so it's always, it always, I've, I mean, 10 years we've been talking about this company and our philosophy and it never gets old because people start like lights your eyes light up. And so I'm being interviewed. I think is amazing. You did a great job. This is killing killer. And then also being an interviewer is also really fun to be able to pull out and like highlight somebody's uncommonness. Yeah.
00:21:48
Speaker
I think the one thing I would end with if we're kind of in that vein, but also on another vein you talked about is the podcast has been very uplifting for me. Life is hard. And we all go through struggles and challenges and obstacles. And I can't tell you how many times the podcast was like, man, I needed that this week.
00:22:12
Speaker
being around people that are growing and, you know, taking the hill and, um, you know, leading the charge and like, you know, just on fire and like being around that campfire that this podcast is somewhat created has probably been the most, um, uh, like the best, you know, intangible for me of just this constant like renewal, you know, of that showing up to the campfire.

Podcast as a Source of Inspiration

00:22:38
Speaker
Yep. Good. That's been awesome for me personally, you know,
00:22:41
Speaker
I love that. I don't know how you could end it better than that. No, that's beautiful. It really was. I love it. You've been listening to the uncommon life project podcast. Uh, my name is Ben Foust. It was an honor to be here with you guys, um, on the 100 plus on the bonus episode. Um, boy, every encouragement I think you guys are, um, I'm, I'm continually inspired by the people you're talking to. Um, as we talked about in the other one, boy, just, just seeing folks taking the world differently. Um, yeah, just, just always gets the wheels turning. So, um, again, thanks for letting me be a part of it. I hope you guys,
00:23:11
Speaker
Enjoy the bonus content. If you got any feedback for us, it's podcast at oncomingwealth.com. I'm always going to miss a word somewhere. All right. I'll let you take it out of here. All right. Thanks for listening. Until next time, go be in common. Thanks, everybody. Goodbye.
