Tracey Ariel's Canadian Identity and 2021 Resolutions

00:00:31
Speaker
My name is Tracey Ariel and I am an apologetically Canadian.
00:00:44
Speaker
So this week I'm talking about resolutions for 2021 and this is a I think it's really really important this year. I always do resolutions for my coming year but this year with the closing down of Montreal for the pandemic this week and I've been feeling very victim-y lists this week. I've just been too much paperwork and not enough change of scenery and
00:01:07
Speaker
no break and too busy and all that kind of stuff.

Choosing Peace and Creativity for 2021

00:01:10
Speaker
So I didn't take as much of a holiday over Christmas as I should have. And so I really need to reset. So as I was working out my resolutions for the year and my plans for the year, I really wanted to focus on how I can go forward into this year in a positive way.
00:01:27
Speaker
It gives me energy and I finally got that through. It took me a while. My word of the year is peace, which I think is so inspiring. I just think the world needs a lot more peace and I'm really, really happy to take that on as a personal mission.
00:01:47
Speaker
And already it's helped me be a little less intense with my projects. I'm always really intense anyway, but the word piece is very helpful in relating to people.

Five-Year Business Plan and Annual Themes

00:02:01
Speaker
And my theme for this year is creativity. I do a five-year business plan, which I finally just about finished. I still have the financial goals to finish for everything after the first year.
00:02:13
Speaker
But I take a theme every year because this year is creativity. Last year was marketing. I really think it's important to have one overriding goal for a year so that when you're trying to decide between projects
00:02:31
Speaker
that all of which are really fast. I'm always so fascinated to do too much that if you want to cut things down, it's a little easier if you remember this is not a training year, this is not a marketing year, this is a creativity year. So if it has to do with making a new course or writing a new book or creating something new, then I'm all in for it. But if it's in addition, I mean, I have natural marketing
00:02:58
Speaker
Projects during the year and I I participated in these I just the Canadian freelance

Life Purpose Courses: Profile Your Business and Ancestors

00:03:04
Speaker
guild has a marketing challenge every two months which is on right now and I so I've always participated in that so it's not like I put my marketing goals aside but If I'm if I'm trying to add something that's not part of the usual routine
00:03:18
Speaker
it will not be added this year unless it has to do with creativity. So that was really exciting. But as you know, if you've been following me for a while, I do way too many things. And so last year I ended up getting a little overwhelmed with some of that. So this year I'm going to do three things to try and help myself get back on track and to say more and more things.
00:03:44
Speaker
and that's the first one is to set up clear accountability goals that scare me a little and that includes because of NaNoWriMo and the fact that I for the first time ever attract my word count per day and my word count per month I've got a clear word count that I want to get done per each month and I've set up four different sprints so the first sprint
00:04:08
Speaker
first quarter I've got January, February, March and I've got a clear word count, I've got a blog count, I've got a number of podcasts count and if it turns out that the first sprint is a little bit too rushed, I've put too much in there, then I'll change the second sprint. I've written out the first, second, third and fourth sprints
00:04:26
Speaker
what I want to do looking at it from now, but I will change them according to what actually happens as I go forward. So I think that's a really important way. There's word count revenue, there's revenue goals, there's product goals. So I have a couple of books, several different books that I want to get done this year. I have some courses that I'm launching. The next version of Profile Your Business is coming up in February. I'm really excited about that.
00:04:52
Speaker
because I've now connected basically my goal is to help all Canadians find their life purpose.

Projects and Growth in Writing

00:04:58
Speaker
And I do that through my three main courses, which are profile your business, profile your ancestors, and right to grow. And so profile your business, when you spend so much time in our business, it's really important to make sure that your business and your personality and everything that you want to accomplish as an individual is reflected in what you do for work, otherwise you're going to be miserable.
00:05:21
Speaker
And so profiling your business is the key element to that. Profiling your ancestor, you would be surprised at how much your identity is based on decisions that your ancestors made and who they were. And basically culture comes from many years of ancestors. And most people don't recognize that it's really hard to
00:05:45
Speaker
to get a handle on that unless you start looking into your life. Like I didn't realize that I had an ancestor who lived in Montreal right where I'm living now. I never understood my connection to this place until I realized that it was probably genetic because so many of my ancestors lived in this area.
00:06:04
Speaker
And there's, you know, I mean, that's probably a story I'm telling myself, but since I specialize in stories, why not? And I think that when you look at your ancestors, you can come up with a lot of really more meaningful stories so that you can have meaningful meaning in your life. And so profiling your ancestors is all about helping people do that.
00:06:22
Speaker
And then the third one is Right to Grow. That's one that's going to be launched later this year and that's all about personal growth and using writing as a way to discover who you are and what you're doing. A lot of people are not writers and this one is geared to people who are not normally writers because if you're a writer then you know how to do this.

Productivity Hacks with Word Counts

00:06:41
Speaker
But if you're not a writer and you do some writing exercises, you can discover a lot about who you are and what you want. You can actually, when you're conflicted about a decision, you can actually work it out through writing. I'm really looking forward to developing that course more. I'm very excited and it can, like I said, it connects my purpose to help you find out what your purpose is here and to make sure that you feel good about accomplishing that.
00:07:10
Speaker
So that's under the accountability as well for the courses. I have several books linked to those and I have several books that are already underway that I have a schedule for accomplishing those as well and publishing them and I've divided it up.
00:07:27
Speaker
into pre-launch, launch, and create so that I have less, so that I'm doing less at any one time but that I still can see where my goals are going. And so obviously I'll change my sprints if the first one turns out to be too busy, as it probably is because I always take on too much, but it's really exciting to be able to have a strategy for how I'm going to accomplish what I want to accomplish this year.
00:07:55
Speaker
And I also got some really, really cool idea from Michael L. Ron. I don't know if you're part of his list, but he sent an email this week talking about his productivity hack. And he uses word count as a way to make sure that he accomplishes, because he is a novel writer, and he's also a law student. He's raising a family.
00:08:19
Speaker
And he also has, he does videos and a podcast and a blog about leveling up as a writer. And he's really into data collection and productivity hacks. And one of the things that he does is he's connected his word count review to, so the first 25,000 words he gets to write about his novel, which is the thing he likes doing most.
00:08:45
Speaker
And then after that, the next 10,000 words is about his business. So he gets his emails written ahead of time, his blog posts written ahead of time. And that's the second part. And then he gets to go back to the novel writing. And he actually had a part three to that. I'm not sure. I can't remember what it is. But anyway, I thought that was a really good idea because it includes, it makes
00:09:06
Speaker
basically you can set yourself up to accomplish your goals using accountability markers and so I haven't included that in my sprint because it's just a brand new idea but I will be thinking about it in the first sprint to see that if I can do that for the second sprint and I'll report on that for you at the nearing the end of this quarter when I do in my next solo episode.

Upcoming Podcast Episodes Preview

00:09:29
Speaker
I have some amazing episodes coming up in the podcast this month. I'm so excited. There's Irene Moore, who is a researcher in Ontario. She focuses on hip hop and black history, and she's in Windsor, Ontario, and I'm so looking forward to introducing you to her. I have a permaculture farmer and a good friend, Stefan Sabkowiak. And if you're interested in genealogy, I'll be doing two presentations at the Virtual Genealogy Conference next week and I will put a link to that in the show notes.

Genealogy Conference Presentations

00:10:20
Speaker
You can hear my presentation about King's Daughters for $10.
00:10:24
Speaker
You can hear my presentation about land records for a separate $10 and there's a bunch of other speakers that I'm really honored to be presenting with and they're also presenting a lot of stuff about Quebec and genealogy and if you're in North America you probably had some ancestors who came through Quebec and so this is your way to learn about how to find out about them if you're interested in that.
00:10:49
Speaker
and the farmer's market in Verdun is happening in February and so if you're interested in that I will put links to the show notes in for that as well and if you're anywhere else and you're interested in local living then just keep stay tuned and I really hope

Goal Setting for 2021

00:11:09
Speaker
to hear what it is that you're doing for 2021. We have no choice but to make it as good as possible. Since we can't get together, then I think that it's up to us to try and come up with some goals so that we can be creative on our own, so that when we can get together, we'll have lots to share. And I guess that's my hope
