Introduction and Host Update

00:00:14
Speaker
Hey folks, welcome to episode number 16 of the Rhubarb Travelers podcast. We are recording this show on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. I am Blake and unfortunately Damon is still not feeling up to speed. So I will be running the show solo again today. You know, let's send some positive thoughts Damon's way and hope he feels better soon um so he can come back on the air and give us his thoughts on everything, and and mostly just to to keep me straight. So, Damon, buddy, this one's for you.
00:00:50
Speaker
Hope you get better soon, and we cannot wait for you to get back.

RV Adventure to Outer Banks

00:00:54
Speaker
I hope everyone out there has been doing great. I wanted to actually start the show out with a little bit of a trip report. um Now, unfortunately, this trip was not to Disney World or Universal or any place like that.
00:01:06
Speaker
However, the Queen and myself... We're recently fortunate enough to have won in a charity auction a weekend use of an RV.
00:01:18
Speaker
And as you know, ah we live in North Carolina and North Carolina has these beautiful what we call the Outer Banks. And the Outer Banks are a string of barrier islands that run the entire width. I guess that's width or is it length?
00:01:34
Speaker
I don't know. Anyway, from north to south on our east coast. And it divides the Atlantic Ocean away from the sounds um on the inland side.

Evolution of Campgrounds

00:01:44
Speaker
And so my wife and i won this RV trip. So we went and picked up this ah RV. um This is not one of those full-size, you know, bus-size RVs. This was one of the smaller ah vans. It was a Mercedes Sprinter van, I believe, and that had been converted into a camper...
00:02:04
Speaker
RV situation. So we went and picked up this ah RV and we started at the north end of the Outer Banks. And we just spent the course of three days driving down the Outer Banks. And if you know anything about the history of North Carolina, the The Outer Banks were pretty notorious for having lots of shipwrecks because of the way the waters got really shallow all of a sudden. And so to combat this, there were quite a few lighthouses that were built over the course of decades. And so we spent this weekend going down the Outer Banks, stopping at all of the lighthouses that happened to be in North Carolina.
00:02:50
Speaker
And so it was really neat. ah The wife and I enjoyed this. um I will say that ah campgrounds have come a long way from when I was growing up many, many years ago. You know, I remember that basically you had a place to park your camper.
00:03:08
Speaker
And that was about it. They might have had a bathhouse. But nowadays, if you haven't been to a campground recently and you've ever thought about doing it, I would suggest you go try it out. So if you have access to um a camper that you could borrow or rent from someone, I know there are places that you can...
00:03:25
Speaker
ah rent out an ah RV just like you would do an Uber or or a VRBO, Vrbo or Airbnb, you can rent those out. I would suggest you go try out a campground. They have come a long way. Really nice bathhouses. Most of them have stores that you can buy things that you forgot to bring, like toothpaste or toothbrushes or things like that.
00:03:47
Speaker
um And just about every one of them has Wi-Fi now. You know, who would have thought ah the all those years ago that they would start to have Wi-Fi at campgrounds? But they do. So we went down the Outer Banks and we stopped at all of the lighthouses and we had a wonderful time.
00:04:04
Speaker
I would definitely do it again. and And I would even try out a little bigger RV, I think. You know, it was it was nice, but let's be honest, it was a little cramped because basically you are in a 15-passenger van that's been that's been converted into something you can live in. So...
00:04:22
Speaker
ah Once again, if you want to try this out, I would recommend it. and And hopefully the wife and I will get to do it again.

00:05:52
Speaker
All right, on with

Disney Vacation Club Insights

00:05:54
Speaker
the news. So let's start with some DVC news. There are some new DVC promotions that have just come out that are offering up to $28 off per point with a first-time purchase of at least 150 points directly from Disney. Now, the current range for new points is roughly somewhere between $243 $248 point. So ah you are looking at a right above $200 if you get this discount.
00:06:27
Speaker
Now, the important thing to understand here is the phrase up to $28 per point, because the amount of discount you're going to receive is going to to be dependent on a couple of things.
00:06:39
Speaker
First off, it's going to be dependent on how many points you buy, and then it's also going to be dependent on where you buy. So For instance, if you just wanted to get somewhere between, let's just say you wanted to get 150 points. um If you wanted to buy at Alani, you would get a $20 per point discount. However, let's say you wanted to get 150 the pollen Well, the discount goes down quite a bit there and you would only get $9 off per pool. So as you are looking at this, if you're interested, you would want to talk to your DVC agent so that you can find out how much discount you're going to get for the resort that you'd like to buy at.
00:07:21
Speaker
Now, in addition, Disney is sweetening the pot even further because by adding on something extra if you want to purchase out in California.
00:07:32
Speaker
And what I mean by that is if you purchase at least 150 points at the Disneyland Hotel DVC Resort, you will receive four two-day Disneyland Park Hopper tickets. Now, this is worth $1,740 itself. And if you get it, you have to you have to use it by January 12th of 2028. So you have well over a year and a half to use this.
00:08:02
Speaker
um and And most importantly, there are no blackout dates. If you can get a stay ah during Christmas or New Year's or Thanksgiving or Halloween,
00:08:13
Speaker
or or July 4th, you are free to use those tickets there. So this is an amazing deal. And the deal applies also if you are adding on points. so if you're already an owner and you want to buy some more points, if you buy 150 at Disneyland, you're going to get this Park Hopper ticket deal. So If you are looking to buy DVC direct from Disney, now is a great time to do it. So reach out to any DVC agent and I'm sure they'll be happy to help you out.
00:08:47
Speaker
All right. Next up. We reported a couple of shows ago that Disney is starting to crack down on what they call commercial renters of DVC points. And what we mean by this is there are some folks who purchase DVC contracts for the sole purpose of renting them out to others so that they can earn a profit off of it. They never intend to stay there. They never intend to use them themselves. The only reason they have them is to rent them out to other people. And this can be a little bit of a headache for people that own DVC that actually want to stay there because these renters will just gobble up all of the prime dates as soon as they appear. And then you, as someone who wants to go to Disney, um is not able to get the dates that they want. And so it's become a real problem. And like we said,
00:09:37
Speaker
That d Disney has started to crack down on this. um They've added language to their contracts to say that being a commercial renter is against the rules and we reserve the right to essentially negate the contract if they think you are doing this for commercial reasons. now Disney has further added on restrictions just recently to further prevent or discourage people from renting them out commercially. And what I mean by that is it used to be that as a DVC owner, you had the ability to buy the Sorcerer Pass annual pass. And this is the Sorcerer Pass is only available to DVC members and Florida residents. Residents.
00:10:22
Speaker
And there was no restriction on how many of those annual passes that you could buy as a DVC owner. And I hope you see where I'm going with this, because what would happen is these commercial renters would purchase DVC or excuse me, they would purchase annual passes, these sorcerer passes, and then transfer them over to people that wanted them who would then pay that person for that. Well, Disney is starting to crack down on that as well. And the way they are doing it is they have added language into the Sorcerer Pass contract that says this can only be purchased for the member or immediate family members that are living in that member's household.
00:11:07
Speaker
In addition, eight passes is the maximum number of passes that you can purchase. and Previously, there was no maximum amount that someone could purchase. So if you had 20 people, you could purchase 20 passes.
00:11:22
Speaker
That is no more. Disney is not ah going to allow that. Again, this is just a way for them to further crack down on the commercial renters. I think that's a good thing because these commercial renters were basically causing chaos and just making it really hard for the folks that own DVC and actually want to use it to get the dates that they want. So hopefully this will start to make it not worth their while. And now let's let's, you know, be clear.
00:11:51
Speaker
This is not for the average person that just rents out their points once every two years to a friend just because they're not going to be able to make it to Disney this year.
00:12:02
Speaker
It's not for you. Right. This is for the people whose sole purpose of owning DVC is to rent them out. So. Good news on that.

Disney's New Developments and Events

00:12:12
Speaker
Okay, let's talk about the newest DVC property that will be coming online very soon. That is, of course, Disney Lakeshore Lodge. um It is over on Bay Lake, and Disney is now starting to drop some real details and some concept art about what this resort is going to be about.
00:12:35
Speaker
And as you might imagine, this particular resort is going to be very nature-inspired and nature-themed, given that it's over in the wilderness area, it's on Bay Lake, it fits right in.
00:12:49
Speaker
Now, Bill Derrickson, I believe I said that name right, who is the senior VP of DVC says, this is inspired by Walt Disney's lifelong admiration for the great outdoors. This resort will offer our members and guests an opportunity to reconnect with nature while creating cherished family memories at Walt Disney World Resort. Now, some of the things that the resort will include,
00:13:14
Speaker
are expansive floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the lobby area, throughout the public areas in your room, and this is to help utilize the natural sunlight within the area.
00:13:27
Speaker
Now, we like we mentioned before, it's located along Bay Lake, so that's going to offer views of the the native flora and fauna that are in Florida, and of course, you're going to have incredible views of the Magic Kingdom fireworks at night,
00:13:43
Speaker
on the shores of the lake. I can only imagine what that's going to be like. And there are going to be some premier spots within this resort, kind of like the bungalows at Polynesian. There are going to be waterfront houses along Bay Lake, and those are going to be your two to three bedroom um houses for for the premium points, as you might imagine.
00:14:09
Speaker
Now, this resort is right now scheduled to be open in summer of 2027. So we have just over a year to go. And in the coming months, we're probably going to find out more about the dining options that are going to be available there, the recreational offerings. We know that there's going to be an extensive ah water feature here, the the Lazy River that we've seen, the outline of, the pools,
00:14:35
Speaker
It's going to be really, really unique. I cannot wait. And I know if Damon were here, he would say, man, I'm going to buy there because it just sounds good. So Lakeshore Lodge is coming.
00:14:45
Speaker
Lots of neat features. OK, the last little bit of DVC news really doesn't have anything to do with any of the resorts. If you have been listening, you know that Rockin' Roller Coaster over in Disney Hollywood Studios has been rethemed to The Muppets. And Disney has announced that DVC members will get a special preview to ride this ride before it opens to the general public. Now...
00:15:15
Speaker
This ride is opening to the general public on May 26th. And Disney has not announced the dates yet for this DVC member preview. But you should keep your eyes open because it will be coming. And if you are a DVC member, you will be able to get on this ride before anyone else. And along with that, Disney has announced some of the songs that are going to be in the ride, such as Song 2 by The Electric Mayhem, of course. There's going to be Born to be Wild.
00:15:45
Speaker
that features Camilla the Chicken. Love Roller Coaster, that will also feature Jennifer Hudson and Questlove. Rock Rock Till You Drop, featuring Def Leppard. All right. And then Walking on Sunshine, also featuring Kelly Clarkson. And the Electric Mayhem are also expected to perform.
00:16:03
Speaker
Can you picture that from the Muppet movie during the pre-show or the post-show? They haven't announced that yet. So, If you are a DVC member and you are going down to Florida anytime between now and May 26th, you will want to keep your eyes open for any announcements about a DVC member preview of this ride. It is going to be awesome, so don't miss out on it.
00:16:29

That's DontResistTheTravel.com.
00:18:05
Speaker
All right, let's start off the park news by heading over to one of the water parks. We don't talk about the water parks very often. Disney has announced that at Typhoon Lagoon, the H2O Glow After Hours event is returning. Now, this is going to be a hard ticketed event. Think of it like Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween or Mickey's Very Merry Christmas, but on a much smaller scale. It's a hard ticketed event, so the general public will not be there.
00:18:34
Speaker
and is going to run on select nights between June 2nd and September 5th. And that is basically your entire summer of vacation. Tickets will start at $85 plus tax for adults. And as an added benefit,
00:18:51
Speaker
Disney Vacation Club members will get a 20% discount off of that $85 rate. Now, at this event, there will, of course, be all the rides you can ride. That will have shorter lines because, again, this is a hard-ticketed event. There will be food, there will be drinks, and you will be able to do some meet and greets with some more of the rare characters in Disney's lineup. Among those are...
00:19:18
Speaker
Chip and Dale in their Rescue Rangers outfit. Scrooge McDuck will be there. And Launchpad McQuack, who was in the DuckTales cartoon series. And the big name that will be there that you can meet and greet is Powerline Max from the Goofy Shorts. He was always a big hit. So if you are heading down and you like to go to the water parks, ah and you'll be there between June 2nd and September 5th. This is something you will want to look and see if you will have available to you. um It's something you can do at night, so after a long day, you can go have fun in the water parks and be ready for the next day.
00:19:59
Speaker
All right, let's head over to California and Disneyland, where today, the day we are recording this, April 29th, Galaxy's Edge is now opening up its timeline so that you will be able to experience characters that are not solely based in episodes seven through nine. They are bringing in some of the original triey trilogy characters. They are bringing in other characters from the TV shows.
00:20:28
Speaker
So who's going to be there? First off, the biggie. Darth Vader will be showing up. He's going to be in his search for Luke Skywalker. That will bring him to Batuu. Leia Organa and Han Solo, they're going to be reunited with Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca. So Luke Skywalker is actually going to show up in Batuu. And the pictures we're seeing here online is he will be in his Return of the Jedi all black outfit. Looks very neat.
00:20:59
Speaker
ah Princess Leia is going to be in her Empire Strikes Back Hoth ah cold weather outfit. And then Han Solo and Chewbacca will be in their traditional outfits. In addition, there's going to be the Mandalorian and Grogu who are already out there. but They will be making a return as well. And then Ahsoka from the Ahsoka TV series will also be making appearances for meet and greets.
00:21:27
Speaker
Now, if you're a fan of the Episode 7 through 9 characters, such as Rey and Kylo Ren, don't worry, they're still going to be there. um They're just going to be joined now by some of the older, more established characters.
00:21:42
Speaker
And to complement that, They are going to be piping in now music from the original movies. So this is all of the John Williams movie. Now, if you didn't know, the music that you heard ah traditionally in Batuu and Galaxy's Edge was not part of any of the movies. Now they're going to bring that movie ah the movie music in.
00:22:01
Speaker
So it will complement all of the original characters that are showing up. Which, by the way, I got to say, can you imagine being the person that was tapped on the shoulder and said, hey, we want you to be Luke Skywalker?
00:22:17
Speaker
I mean, imagine the weight on your shoulders of having to meet all of these kids and all of these adults, let's be honest, and and and acting the part of Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia or Han Solo. You know, there was a reason why traditionally these characters haven't shown up because everyone associates them to Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.
00:22:45
Speaker
You know, that Disney was has always been reluctant to have what we call mainline characters in a meet and greet setting that have been popular in movies because people have kind of just in the back of their minds been expecting to see the folks that actually portrayed them. So, you know, my hats off to these folks that are going to be playing Luke Skywalker and Han Solo and Princess Leia. You got some big shoes to fill. So may the force be with you, as they say.
00:23:13
Speaker
And of course, this now, like we just said, is happening over at Disneyland. The same thing will be happening at Disney Hollywood Studios in Florida. We don't have an exact timeline for that yet, but I'm sure Disney will be announcing that pretty soon.
00:23:27
Speaker
All right, let's head over to the Disney Cruise Line, where Disney has announced some new special offerings off of kids' fairs. So what's the deal here? So if you book a Disney Cruise any time between now and June 14th,
00:23:45
Speaker
For sailings between this coming October and March of 2027, you will get 50% off of the kids rate. And that's five zero percent off, folks. Basically, you can get two kids to go for the price of one. And this is all part of their Together at Sea offer.
00:24:07
Speaker
Now, there are a couple of restrictions. You have to book two full fair guests. So basically, two adults would have to be with the kids. um And you all have to be in the same stateroom. You can't split up and the adults be in one room and the kids be in another. You all all have to be in the same room But for families, this is a pretty good deal that can actually tip the scales if you were thinking about doing a cruise where if you got 50% off on your kids, it might be enough to push you over the line.
00:24:41
Speaker
And of course, there are all types of things that your kids can do, whether they're from three to 10 years old. They have the Oceaneer Club and the Oceaneer Lab where they can do all sorts of neat activities and players that are inspired by Disney and Pixar and Marvel. um There's something for your tweens. So if you're like 11 to 14, they've got their own space where they can hang out with folks of their age.
00:25:06
Speaker
And then there's an area for the 14 to 17 year olds where you can hang out. There's got music and movies and other activities designed just for them. And of course, while they're there, then you have the adult only spaces that you will be able to enjoy while they're off playing around.
00:25:25
Speaker
So all that being said, if you are thinking of booking a Disney cruise to occur anytime between October of this year and March of next year, you will kind of want to get on the ball here and look into it because you have a chance to save some money on your kids' fairs.
00:25:44
Speaker
Okay, last little bit of Disney news here, and it doesn't have anything to do with a park, doesn't have anything to do with movies or anything like that or cruise lines. Well, maybe it has a little bit to do with the park. But if you've been listening and watching, you know Disney has now really gotten into solar arrays to help generate electricity. If you've ever looked at any satellite photos of Walt Disney World down in Florida, you will have seen the giant solar array that is shaped ah like Mickey's head, right? Well, they have four of those solar arrays. and They're not all shaped like Mickey.
00:26:20
Speaker
But Walt Disney World down in Florida has four solar arrays. And Disney has just announced that on sunny spring and summer days that its four solar arrays can now produce up 100% of the energy needs of Walt Disney World for that day.
00:26:42
Speaker
So we're talking about all of the electricity for all the lights, all of the electricity for the monorail, all of the electricity that is needed to run the rides. All of that is being generated by solar power now.
00:26:57
Speaker
And I just think it's really neat. you know, I'm kind of a science nerd. And I think it's really cool that Disney has invested all of this money and time in to be able to sustainably power their needs.
00:27:11
Speaker
um Without creating a lot of weight. So hats off to Disney. They are now on some days being able to generate 100% of the power that they need to operate the parks.
00:27:23
Speaker
OK, that is all of our Disney news for today. And so that means it is time for the after show.

Dollywood and Local Arts Support

00:27:39
Speaker
Alright, welcome to the After Show, folks, and let's go over to Universal Orlando, where they have announced some new annual passholder bonus benefits that will be specifically running between May 1st and May 21st of this year.
00:27:58
Speaker
So what are the benefits? First off, for new this year is a $5 merchandise credit. Now, to get this $5 credit, you have to spend at least $10 at a Universal Orlando Resort merchandise location.
00:28:13
Speaker
You know, it's $5. In the grand scheme of things, $5 may not seem a whole lot, but $5 is $5. And you know what? That might be an extra $5 so that you can buy another Butterbeer over in Hogsmeade.
00:28:26
Speaker
Man, I love me some butterbeer. I wish I had one right now. In addition, there are going to be some specialty food offerings that will only be available to annual pass holders. Now, I've never actually seen this where a resort park will only offer up some foods to annual pass holders, but Universal is doing it. So,
00:28:50
Speaker
Without going too much deep into detail, there's going to be in certain locations throughout the parks and and the city walk area. But if you are an annual pass holder, make sure that when you go into any place that's offering food, just ask, are there any special annual pass holder offerings? And see if you have availability to them.
00:29:07
Speaker
Furthermore, there is going to be a special magnet giveaway as part of this event. It is a Transformer themed magnet and it's going to be available at the Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show Experience. It's going to be in their merchandise shop.
00:29:24
Speaker
And what happened was a little while back, ah Universal put out a poll saying, OK, if we're going to give away an annual pass holder magnet and it's going to be Transformer themed, would you want the Decepticons on it?
00:29:37
Speaker
or would you want the Autobots on it? So it gave annual pass holders the opportunity to vote about which one they want, and it turns out that the Autobots won the vote. so you can go to the Tonight Shop in Universal Orlando and pick up your free Autobot Transformer annual pass holder magnet.
00:29:58
Speaker
In addition to that, pass holders are going to get a 35% discount off any type of photo package. that they purchase while they are there. And by the way, that ah that's an annual pass photo package. So you will get a whole year's worth of photos with on a 35% discount if you go more than one. So that's actually a really good deal. ah In addition, the Hollywood Drive-In Golf, that's over, that's the putt-putt area, right? So that is over at Universal CityWalk. You are going to receive a 20% discount off your next mini golf session.
00:30:36
Speaker
um I've actually done that with my family. Those are really neat. um It's fun putt-putt, and you should try it out. And in the last little bit of annual passholder news Universal Orlando, if you are a preferred passholder member, you will be able to enter Islands of Adventure as part of the early entry. You'll be able to go an hour early before the park opening. And if you are a preferred a power or a seasonal pass holder, you will be able to enter Volcano Bay up to 30 minutes before the official park opening. So some early entry benefits now coming in the month of May for Universal Orlando annual pass holders.
00:31:20
Speaker
Okay, to round out our after show news, let's head on over to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Dollywood. where Dollywood's Flower and Food Festival opened up just over a week ago on April 18th. It is running through June 7th.

All right, that is going to wrap it up for this episode, folks. Man, if Damon were here right now, he'd be really happy because we are right at the 30-minute time that he loves to stay at.

And, you know, like we said at the beginning, Damon, get well, my friend. We want you back. Man, just running this show by myself and talking for 31 minutes straight with no one to kind of riff off of, oo that is harder than it sounds, my friend. So please hurry up, get well, and we want you back here.

And folks, I want to end the show today by putting out a special request. And that request is for you to go out and support your local youth arts program, whether it's going to a band concert for a middle school or high school, whether it's going to a choral concert or some type of musical theater youth program.

Speaker
Go out and support that. You know, there always seems to be lots of support for sports programs in our in our communities, but sometimes the arts programs don't get as much support. And this is where we can really help out those programs. Because if you enjoy going to Disney, if you enjoy going to Dollywood or to Universal, it takes people and performers to make that magic happen out there.
00:33:39
Speaker
And without our youth learning how to sing and learning how to play instruments or learning how to act on stage, without those youth of today, we are not going to have those Disney performers of tomorrow, right?
00:33:54
Speaker
So do me a favor, go out and find something youth arts related and go support it so that we can keep this magic rolling. And with that being said, we will see you on the next show.
