Exploring Challenges in a Neurotypical World
00:00:11
Speaker
We're going to be exploring the subjects that really matter to autistic people and their families, and we'll be offering practical advice and information along the way. If you live in a world where the majority of people don't have the same experience issue, how are you ever supposed to know what your challenges are?
Meet Kerry Highcock

Speaker
There's a conception at the moment that it's all about hiding being autistic. So who are we? Here's Kerry Highcock, family development manager for the charity.

Highlighting Real-life Autistic Experiences
00:00:51
Speaker
Autistic voice is really really important to everything that we do so this podcast is going to bring you the experiences of those that are autistic so that we can talk about real life issues that matter.

world. No subject's going to be off the table from masking to anxiety, sex and relationships to gender identity. Can you imagine the pressure that that puts on a child? Oh my gosh is this masking? I was masking because I was concerned about other people's judgments and them thinking negatively of me or my children.
Navigating Autism Diagnosis and Family Concerns
00:01:31
Speaker
you deal with a lot of families as part of your sort of outreach work and support work. What kind of questions do you hear coming up? So getting an autism diagnosis can be really complex and quite confusing for families. So we support families with many, many different questions. Anything from toileting to diet to sensory differences. We do a lot of work and support around emotional well-being. So looking at things like autistic burnout, masking, self-regulation.

Speaker
And can it be a kind of confusing time for parents? It's quite hard sometimes to find out who you can trust on the internet, isn't it, when you go looking for answers?
00:02:10
Speaker
Yeah, getting a diagnosis for your child can be very confusing. There's a lot of negative information out there which we need to dispel really and we need to find accurate knowledge that's often put together by autistic people themselves and not just for families, for autistic adults themselves who are maybe getting a diagnosis much later on in life.
Addressing Global Autism-Related Questions
00:02:30
Speaker
Getting that diagnosis can again be very confusing and can be difficult to understand so it's about

North East Autism Society providing the best possible information that's credible and relevant at the time. And I guess even though with the North East Autism Society these questions must be being asked by families all around the country, mustn't they?
00:02:51
Speaker
We're a regional charity in the northeast, however, these questions are all around the world, you know, and I think this podcast is gonna open those doors and get us talking about things that we really need to listen to. You know, we're gonna be dealing with some quite sensitive topics as well, so everything from victimisation, discrimination, emotional wellbeing and mental health, no topics off the table.
