Introduction and NFL Highlights
00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome back everybody to another episode of the boysie boys podcast with Dawson Danner and Mario Edwards. I'm Dawson Danner and today we got a whole lot to talk about NFL wise. I mean yet another exciting week of some NFL football is in the books. Just some main topics. I mean the Giants getting embarrassed on Monday Night Football yet again.
00:00:23
Speaker
and Mahomes, Kelsey, and the Chiefs surviving against the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football with Taylor Swift yet again in the house.
Vic's Sports Experience
00:00:32
Speaker
But first things first though, Mario, we got a guest in the house tonight. Yeah, we've got a special guest today, standing at a whopping five foot one, weighing 115 pounds, my little brother, Vic Edwards. Vic, I'm glad to have you on. That's not the intro I was hoping for there.
00:00:53
Speaker
both bigger and taller. My name is Vic. I went to Boise as well. That's kind of how I got to know these guys and yeah, just excited to talk some sports with you guys. Yeah, for the listeners out there, what are some sports that you played in high school and give us a little rundown of which you love and what kind of sports you like and who you like.
00:01:18
Speaker
Uh, let's see. So I, in high school throughout all my years, I played a basketball and then for my senior year, I got to play football, which was definitely a great experience and kind of started my love for, for football. And, um, also just kind of getting into it and watching my favorite teams, which is like the Eagles and, uh, for the NFL and then for the NBA, the Kings for sure.
Eagles' 'Push' Play Success
00:01:39
Speaker
Um, so yeah, good choices.
00:01:42
Speaker
Good choice. Yeah. The Edwards brothers really aren't big baseball fans. So that's why we don't really talk about baseball. Anyways, let's just get right into it, guys. I mean, another crazy week. And, uh, one thing I wanted to mention just right off the bat is the big topic going on in the NFL world today is the push push by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Bears' Struggles and Justin Fields Debate
00:02:07
Speaker
You guys being Eagles fans. I mean, Vic, what are you, how old?
00:02:11
Speaker
Is that play just so successful for them, but any other team who tries it fails? The simple answer is Travis, Jason Cassie. He was an animal as a center and just that's kind of, I think honestly what it is. And it's annoying that all these other teams are like saying that it should be banned or players in the NFL because it other play, other teams try it and they can't do it as well. I think it just comes to the line play of the Eagles and
00:02:41
Speaker
the Jalen hurts massive legs kind of getting it done on that last yard or whenever they need it. Yeah, I agree with that. I mean, the offensive line of Eagles is probably, if not the best, one of the best in NFL and, you know, Jalen squat on like 600 pounds, which is crazy. And then, you know, like you were talking about Dawson earlier before we hopped on about like, you know, the Chargers trying it. I've seen a couple of teams try it and they just can't everyone just get stuff.
00:03:09
Speaker
And I don't know what the deal is. I don't know why they can't, why they, or like everyone's
Zach Wilson's Performance Against Chiefs
00:03:14
Speaker
complaining. I mean, everyone has the same amount of players and stuff and can still push players, but they just can't get it done. It must just be the technique. Yeah, dude. My thing is, is like, I think it's absolutely insane how the Eagles and Nick Sirianni, I feel like they have all the confidence in the world where they could be on their own 20. I don't know if they've done that this year, but
00:03:35
Speaker
they can be on their own 20 and be confident running that play. And the crazy thing is, dude, is I've seen them run it on like fourth and two. Like they need to get two yards and they can still get it. Because Jalen Hurst is just massive enough to just sneak through there and gain the game, get the first down, but. Yeah, that was fun. I was just going to say they also have like that play where they fake that little push push and go around the outside. And I think that just further helps like
00:04:03
Speaker
like deep in the playbook a little bit, you know, you're expecting that tush push pretty much every time and then whenever you're at least expecting it, you pull it out and run it around. It's just a huge advantage.
Jets Without Aaron Rodgers
00:04:13
Speaker
Totally. Yeah. I mean, it's, it would be pretty funny. Can you imagine if it just ran that all the way up the field? I mean, do you think if they average like two, three yards, they just ran that thing all the way up. I mean, it is definitely advantage. I mean, it's like a for sure yard at least. I mean,
00:04:30
Speaker
Last week it was a little sketchy. We did get called for an offsides, I think, and I think, you know, NFL is definitely starting to now pay attention to it and think it's a little OP. So I'll be interested to see if kind of refs and stuff kind of really look at the lineup and see if they can somehow, you know, not let the Eagles have an advantage.
Rams' Overtime Win and Future Prospects
00:04:48
Speaker
So I don't know. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks with that. Totally.
00:04:53
Speaker
Uh, now I want to get into, I mean, a team that would most certainly probably fail at the touch push considering they found yet another way to lose a game is the Chicago bears.
Eagles' Performance and Upcoming Challenges
00:05:05
Speaker
Justin Fields guys. I mean, what is going on over there? I'm hearing reports that they're thinking about a lot of the analysts are saying that they should already just tank and get Caleb Williams from USC. What are your guys's thoughts on that? Uh, I just think that.
00:05:23
Speaker
I mean, it's obviously goes deeper than the quarterback. Like it is not, it is not Justin Fields fault. They're losing. I mean, he sure, he has a lot of improvements to make, but, uh, especially in last week's game, we seen that he has like, and last year, like sparks of really good stuff. So I think he can be that quarterback, but like, I mean, even just the coaching in that Denver game was just fricking weird. I don't know what they were thinking in the, in the last, like that last drive that we had the ball calling timeouts at weird times and just.
00:05:52
Speaker
not running plays that would be beneficial to keep in the clock running or giving Justin Fields like a positive, positive play to get yards and get the first down to close out the game. Yeah, Mario. So the bears blew a 28 seven third quarter lead ended up losing 31 28 to the Denver Broncos, who is also struggling to start the season, even with Sean Payton.
00:06:18
Speaker
What do you, do you think that the head coach is the blame or do you think that the bears are just that pathetic of a franchise that they can just never get things right? I think, I think, I mean, honestly, I think it's been a little mixture of both, um, over the last, I don't know, decade for, for us, at least for as long as I can remember the bears haven't really been, um, you know,
00:06:41
Speaker
a force to be reckoned with in the NFC, unless we talk about the Super Bowl, that was years ago, it feels like when it was them,
Are the Dolphins Overrated?
00:06:50
Speaker
it was the Colts. But I think it's kind of a stem of just like with Sam, just like the terrible coaching. They've gone through a whole bunch of head coaches and then also just kind of the outlook that the franchise has and just how they function internally. I don't know, it must be something because I haven't seen anything positive really come out of that franchise.
Giants vs Bears: Who's the Worst?
00:07:28
Speaker
due to the, due to the team that he's on, I think that he just lacks confidence. I don't know if you guys saw the interview with him, I believe before this past week, they asked him just kind of what his deal, what, what's going on with him. What's the deal? And he said that part of it is the coaching. So when a quarterback comes out and says that publicly, I mean, you really got to believe that things are not well in the front office, just going all the way down to the coaching stuff. Because like you said, Mario, I mean,
00:07:36
Speaker
Do you guys believe in fields?
00:07:55
Speaker
It's pretty shocking how bad they've been for our entire lifetimes. Cause they've been through countless amount of coaches, like I want to say four or five and every one of them just can't get the job done. The last time actually they had a successful year was against you guys as either of you guys. Oh yeah. Yeah. That was, that was pretty much the last season they did well. And that was when, who was that quarterback that year?
00:08:22
Speaker
I can't even remember who the quarterback was, that's terrible. It must have not been someone that was that special. See, that just proves their point. I do think that they need like a culture change like all the way around. Like Chase Claypool has been saying all sorts of stuff to the media too. So you're like, that whole organization is just negative.
Steelers' Struggles and QB Comparisons
00:08:46
Speaker
Like they need like a Dan Campbell or somebody to like turn the whole thing around.
00:08:50
Speaker
Yeah, to just bring some energy in and it just hit me guys. It was Mitch Trubisky was the quarterback backup on God knows what team cause he was bad. But anyways, that, so the bears another very poor performance, but let's get into the Kansas city chiefs on Sunday night football. I mean, staving off the jets come back with Zach Wilson and Zach Wilson looked pretty good for.
00:09:20
Speaker
He actually, I'm going to correct myself. He looked very good for most of that game, but when it all mattered, he failed yet again. So I mean, what do you guys think is going on over there? And do you think that Zach Wilson is just an
C.J. Stroud's Impact and Rookie QB Debate
00:09:35
Speaker
actual bust? I mean, he's not, he hasn't proven himself ever since he entered the league.
00:09:40
Speaker
I don't I don't think that's a fail at all in my opinion. I think he he brought them all the way back given it was probably he could have made better throws keep in the game but just seeing that positive positivity out of him and starting to make the throws I think that's like a huge step in the right direction but again it's just gonna we'll see honestly see next game like whether it was a fluke or if it's something that they can actually
00:10:04
Speaker
Uh, kind of ride the wave on, but I mean, regardless of whether he keeps it up or not, they're definitely missing Aaron Rogers.
Niners vs Cowboys Game Preview
00:10:11
Speaker
So. Oh yeah, they're missing Aaron for sure. But I mean, like you were saying, dude, I think it was, it was great to finally see him looking like that. That was kind of the Zach Wilson that I think everyone thought he was going to be. Um, so that was pretty nice seeing him, you know, being able to show out a little bit and show people that he, he has a decent quarterback and he can be at times, but.
00:10:32
Speaker
I just don't, I think it's still going to be kind of an up and down season for him, especially with just the New York Jets and all the hype around them and, you know, fill in the shoes of Rogers. But Dawson, you're not a huge Zach Wilson fan. So what are your thoughts on him? Yeah, I'm not a fan of him at all. I think that game was, it's going to end up being a fluke. They got the Denver Broncos this week. So that might be another game that he, you know, shows some possibility, but
00:11:02
Speaker
The guy in all honesty, man, he just kind of pisses me off. I watch him. I watched him on Sunday Night Football, you know, before he took the field and just the look in his face. He just looks like a scared puppy. And he kind of he takes that out to like the field with him a lot. And I know that he proved that he's somewhat capable against the Chiefs. But I think that was an ultimate fluke. And like I just have never been a fan of him ever since he came out of college.
Importance of Niners vs Cowboys Game
00:11:31
Speaker
The Jets wasted the number two pick on him. I know I'm sounding pretty brutal right now, but that's just the truth coming from me. Well, we're all, we're all Boise State fans. So it's easy to hate on Zach Wilson. I agree. I really, really dislike him, but I also am like a quarterback in that high drafted coming out of like a smaller college like BYU. I something in me just wants to root for him, especially when he starts to play well, I was like so stoked, but I definitely see the hate for him too.
00:11:58
Speaker
Yeah, I feel for the guy. I don't know why, like I used to hate like even watched some of his interviews last year when he was playing his defense. I was like, I hate this guy. But then he actually blamed it on himself, which was a complete change from last year. So maybe there's some growth there. But Dawson's out here sounding like Rodney Harrison with that with that tape. But you got to respect it. I have the ability to call him garbage. I'm like a guy who's getting paid millions to be on national TV. That's all I got to say.
00:12:27
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, it was it was interesting. I was just I just thought it was funny, not because he called him garbage, but just because he was trying to convince Chris Jones to say it like with him. I thought that was funny, like why?
Cowboys' Playoff Chances and Impact of Loss
00:12:39
Speaker
Yeah, just really trying to get him to say so he doesn't look bad. Yeah. But anyways, I kind of want to move on to my team, the Rams getting it done in overtime, they almost blew a 23 point lead to the Indianapolis Colts, but
00:12:56
Speaker
Hookah Nakua coming up big again, getting his first touchdown of his NFL career in overtime to top the Colts 29-23. Mario, I know you have him in fantasy.
00:13:09
Speaker
Uh, what do you think about just his historic start to the season? And, you know, there's rumors that Cooper cup is coming off the IR. He might be making his way back this week. We'll see. But if he does, do you think that's going to affect Nakua's output or do you think he's that good of a, a rookie that the Rams just continue, need to continue utilizing him?
00:13:30
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, obviously he's the real deal. I mean, he's on pace right now to set the single season record for most yards, which currently Calvin Johnson holds at 1964 yards. And he's on pace to carry out what he's done so far, he'd have over 2000. And he's also on pace to break the receptions record, which is held by Michael Thomas. So this guy's obviously the real deal.
00:13:55
Speaker
Um, you know, he's a rookie, but I think that, you know, Cooper cup coming back may take some targets away from him, but again, you know, you could, you could have some opening, you know, of, um, you know, defenses that, because they're going to be putting all their energy and, um, focus on cup. So it will be kind of interesting to see if that opens even more up, um, for Puka. But, you know, it's nice to have my, on my fancy team. Well, we have a wire pickup has, uh, treated me right.
00:14:23
Speaker
Yeah, Vic, you mentioned BYU. That's another BYU hidden gem that the Rams got in the fifth round. I mean, do you think that the hype is deserving or do you think that it's he's kind of just flourishing with due to cups absence? I think it's a combination. I mean, he's catching balls and making plays.
Wrap-up and Friendly Bet
00:14:43
Speaker
So there's obviously a hidden gem there, but I think it's definitely being like exacerbated just because of cups absence. But
00:14:52
Speaker
Like Mario said, I think a lot of defenses are going to draw around Cup. And I think that his fantasy relevance will still be there, especially in the first few weeks where Cup is coming off IR. I think he will still get a lot of catches. And the nice part about the Rams is Stafford throws a bunch. So there's going to be a share of targets to go around to everybody.
00:15:16
Speaker
I think that he doesn't really throw as much to like Tyler Higbee and other receivers as much as he throws like Nakua and Cup. So I think it'll be a lot of a lot. It'll be one of them either game. Yeah, totally. I was talking to my dad actually about
00:15:32
Speaker
how he's going to get affected with Cup coming back. And we kind of both agreed that we don't think that it's going to be that big of a drop-off. And the one guy I do think his fantasy relevance is kind of going to take a hit is guys like 2-2 Atwell and Van Jefferson, you know, those kind of second, third string, like options that aren't going to get as many targets now with Cooper Cup coming back. But boy, puking Akua as a Rams fan, I am just
00:16:01
Speaker
loving it. And I just love how he was a fifth round pick. People didn't even know who he was coming out of college and the Rams found a good one. So yeah, you must be stoked. I mean, you guys have always had kind of those, those two good receivers and that kind of, you know, when you had Robert Woods and cup, you always have those debates about the duos and it seems like they always have a top duo. So I think they found themselves a new one for sure. So you must be happy. I mean,
00:16:28
Speaker
What is your outlook on the Rams so far this season and you know, where do you think they're going to end up and their division? I I love the way I love the way we're playing so far this year. I mean, I granted that 23 if we would have blown that 23 point lead, I would have been absolutely livid, but I loved we got the ball first and we didn't even allow the Colts to touch the ball, touch the field again, you know, and that's the old Sean McVeigh is coming out in that aspect that he.
00:16:56
Speaker
is putting Stafford in comfortable positions where he's getting rid of the ball quick because that's kind of been their Achilles heel the last couple of years. Even in the Super Bowl run, we struggled with McVeigh dropped Stafford back a lot in the five step drop and deep routes to his receivers. But our bread and butter has always been quick drag routes. Find our athletic receivers in space and let them do the damage.
00:17:26
Speaker
I've been loving it as far as the division outlook. You know, it's tough, man. The Niners obviously are what they are and the Seahawks are showing that they might give the Niners some fights and like some fits for the rest of the year. They still got to play each other twice. So I definitely think though that the Rams
00:17:48
Speaker
I was not, I didn't have very high expectations this year. I thought that we were going to struggle and I love the way we're looking through four weeks and we're sitting at two and two, but I think we could be three and one. I think we should have beaten the Bengals, but we kind of let that game get away from us. But yeah, I'm really liking where we're at. I mean, you guys are definitely going to drop another game this week, but, um, you know, playing the Eagles undefeated, obviously you guys got to go against the joke, but
00:18:16
Speaker
your defense looking a little suspect, a guy named Sam Howell for the Washington commanders who before this, Mario claims that they might've found their franchise quarterback. What do you think about that? Oh man. What do I think about Sam Howell being a franchise quarterback? There's absolutely, I don't see it. I think he'll be, he'll be a backup in a few years, especially I had the Buffalo defense when, uh, when they played the commanders and
00:18:46
Speaker
for interceptions, that is tough. Yeah. So going off of that, I mean, so Buffalo, you know, made him look silly and the Eagles kind of allowed him to march up and down the field.
00:18:59
Speaker
Mario, I mean, you guys are 4-0. You guys are sitting pretty. But you guys still got to play the Cowboys twice. I don't know who else you guys got on your schedule if you guys got the Niners. But moving throughout the season, is it something to panic about, about your kind of your weak secondary? I wouldn't say panic. I mean, yes, we haven't looked the best. But we're still 4-0. And I feel like we haven't played our best yet.
00:19:29
Speaker
Yeah. And, and going back to Sam, how I wasn't saying he was a franchise quarterback. My phrasing was, um, as I've heard around the NFL, everyone's freaking out about, is this guy the real deal? They finally have themselves a quarterback. So possibly. Um, but again, you know, the Eagles are kind of gave up a bunch, a bunch of plays last week. And, um, you know, it was concerning as a fan, but I, I think there's room for improvement, you know,
00:19:56
Speaker
Obviously the rookie, you know, defensive end, Jalen, Jalen Carter is looking like a beast. So have you seen Jalen? Oh yeah. He's, he's fallen. Um, especially on like the snap counts that he's getting, he's just going crazy. But I think going off of like what you were saying about the Eagles in general, I mean, both our offense and the defense isn't where we remember it last year. Um, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I think that we have a lot of progress we can make in the season. And I think the goal is to be hitting our stride.
00:20:26
Speaker
late season, right before the playoffs come. So I think honestly, I'd rather start off like this, still getting ugly wins, but start off like this, then work our way up to like dominating these, these upper teams, like the Cowboys and, and the 49ers. So I think, uh, we're in, we're in a good spot.
00:20:43
Speaker
Yeah, we got a tough kind of line of games. We got one more easy one this week with the Rams. And then I'm going to kick myself in the ass for saying that. Hopefully they don't lose. And then we got, I think in the next coming weeks, we got, I think, a Dolphins on a Sunday Night Football coming up. Like you said, Cowboys. And then we have a span of literally, it's like Niners, Bills, and Chiefs is all in a row.
00:21:10
Speaker
So that's going to be a real teller of actually where they're at at this point in the season. So it will be interesting to see. I like that. I like that though. I mean, we got to, we got to play these teams. So we're battle battle ready when we hit the playoffs. I think that's like, like last year, everyone was talking about how easy our schedule was. And I think.
00:21:28
Speaker
It worked out, but I think that if we come in battle tested, especially, like I said, if we continue to improve and we're getting at least like a few of those wins later in the season, we'll really be ready for like the tough games and the playoffs and hopefully the Superbowl. Okay. Maro, you just mentioned that the Eagles got the Dolphins coming up. I kind of want to transition to talk about them. You know, last week on the podcast, you and I were hyping up the Bills Dolphins game as our game of the week and kind of turned into a,
00:21:57
Speaker
a blowout win for the Bills, you know, and the Dolphins coming off, putting up 70 points on the Broncos. I don't know if you guys watched that game, but it definitely looked like they struggled and the Bills had a game plan and it just, they capitalized on it. So Mario, do you think that the, the Dolphins are, you know, that we hyped them up a little too much and that offense is a little bit, you know, obviously they got their weapons, but are they a little overrated in the sense?
00:22:26
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I think, I think they haven't really proved themselves yet. Um, you know, obviously they're a good team, but we kind of, I think we both predicted that the bills were going to come out and beat them. I think was what we had, which was, which was good. And, um, yeah, I just, I don't, I don't see them being, you know, a super strong, I definitely think they'll, they'll probably squeeze in the playoffs. It's just tough with that division, but, um, dolphins are frauds. You know what? Why did you think that you think they're for us?
00:22:54
Speaker
Yeah, I think two was starting off the same way last season. Same. Yeah. And it just regression. I think calling gods might be a boy, but I think that the Bill's defense is just on another level and against the division opponent like that, they were riled up. You know, it was Demar Hamlin's first game back since his cardiac arrest. They were, they were hyped up from the get-go and
00:23:22
Speaker
I think that that game just kind of got away from the dolphins to start off. I mean, they were exchanging touchdown for touchdown. I believe it was 14 to 14, like close to halftime. So they were in it, but calling them frauds, Vic, damn, weapons over there. And they're the fastest team by a long shot. I don't know. I kind of just, I don't really believe that much into not saying that he's not good.
00:23:51
Speaker
And that he hasn't played really well, but I don't know. I just, I just don't think that they can be, I think they're going to be like a middle top team. I don't see them being a top team in the NFL. And I don't see them like being in the super bowl, like, and especially like with what you guys saying, and that division is so tough. So. Yeah. But, but you think that like that you think they can make the playoffs. Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think they can make the playoffs, but I mean, two is can got to continue to play well. Do you guys really, do you guys believe in Tua?
00:24:21
Speaker
I'll let you go, Mario. Well, I mean, I'm kind of with you, Vic. I think he's a good quarterback. I think he's still yet to prove that he's able to make that next step. I think if he ends up, you know, having, you know, more of a progressive season rather than a regressive like you did last year, then obviously I think they'll squeeze in the playoffs. And I think, you know, my prediction right now is that they're going to squeeze in as like a wildcard. They're probably going to lose the division to the Bills, but I think they're going to have a good enough record that they're going to squeeze in. So, but as far as Tua,
00:24:51
Speaker
I mean, I still have a lot to see, so to ask about you, what do you think about Scott? I think that I agree with, we all agree on the same things in a sense, but one thing for me that I've noticed about him that I just can't understand is trying to get a grasp on is
00:25:08
Speaker
I feel like every big game he plays in, you know, when the other quarterback of the other team is someone that a lot of the analysts are saying, oh, can Tua, you know, get to that level, the Mahomes, the Burroughs, the Allens, all those guys. I feel like he just continuously lays an egg. And I think that's what's holding him back of getting over the hump.
00:25:29
Speaker
And I think I totally agree with you guys though. I don't think that two is the quarterback of a Superbowl caliber team. I think he's got a lot of room, room to grow, you know, but I, I do think though they got to get that defense right. Because over there in Miami, because Tua has definitely put up some points. I believe they put up 28.
00:25:51
Speaker
points against the bills or something like that. That should be enough to win ballgames in my opinion. And I think that they just got to get right on defense. And that's kind of been their Achilles heel to start the year off. Because even in their wins, I mean, they're giving up 28 points a game and two is having to put up 35. So yeah, yeah, definitely. It'll be interesting to see what happens as they kind of progress through the season. But
00:26:14
Speaker
Speaking of laying eggs and such, the Giants this week were just an absolute embarrassing loss. Did you watch that game there? Oh yeah, I was in class and funny enough, the buddy that I was playing in fantasy had Kenneth Walker and he was sitting right next to me. And Kenneth Walker ended up beating me by enough points. I literally lost by 0.3. So I literally watched it. In that last play, he had minus, I think he had minus five yards.
00:26:42
Speaker
And I was like, Oh, he's going to get one more and go down and nope, I'll end up losing by point three. But yeah, it was a, it was a rough game to watch. I was, I was just embarrassing for the Giants, but as an Eagles fan, I mean, you'd love to see it. You know, Mario, we, after the week one, uh, performance at the Giants put up against the Cowboys losing 40 to zero.
00:27:04
Speaker
I personally thought that was the worst game I've ever witnessed, you know, from a team. But Jesus Christ did this topic. I mean, Daniel Jones, poor guy, man. I mean, he was running for his life back there. I believe the Seahawks finished with 10 or 11 sacks and Daniel Jones just looks like a chicken with his head cut off running back there, man.
00:27:27
Speaker
I just don't know what is going on. I mean, Brian day ball coach of the year last year, it made it seem like, you know, he's, he, he fixed Daniel Jones and that offense, but it just seems like, I mean, are they the worst team in the NFL right now? They have to be right.
00:27:44
Speaker
No, I'd still go to the Bears. I still think the Bears. I would take the Giants over the Bears all day. I mean, when I look at the Giants, obviously it's not a strong team, but what I am seeing firsthand, and I think we all saw it, was the offensive line. If the offensive line just gives them a little more time, maybe like two seconds, that's not even that much. Two seconds, it'll open up so many more options for them.
00:28:11
Speaker
But get this Mario, the Seattle defense ranked in like the bottom portion of the league in giving up past yards and least amount of sacks going into that game. And they made that team look silly. I don't know, man. If the Bears and Giants played tomorrow night, I got the Bears in that one. I'm dead serious. Wow. Yeah. I think Vic, are you with me on this one?
00:28:34
Speaker
Yeah, I think I got to go to just because the pieces that New York has, I mean, they got a good, they got good players, but I'm also thinking that Saquon's out of that game. Just by now, I got the Giants. He, he, he makes, he makes that offense a whole lot better. But I, if, if the giants went into tomorrow's night's game with that same unit,
00:28:58
Speaker
I got the Bears all day long and that would probably be the dumpster bowl of the year, huh? I think so. I think that would be the dumpster bowl of the year. I mean, I don't know. It's pretty bad too, but I don't think they're on that same level. The Pittsburgh Steelers. Yeah. Wow. There's another team to talk about. They just got absolutely embarrassed by CJ Stroud and the Texans. Actually, I mean, they came off a very surprising upset win against the Jaguars and then they
00:29:28
Speaker
They come into the following week and as underdogs yet again and get it done against Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. So, I mean, Mario Kenny picket, man, believe he's injured. I don't know what his status is going into week five, but.
00:29:43
Speaker
Kenny Pickett, man, since he's joined the lead too, I just feel like we're ragging on a lot of the quarterbacks in this lead that are not proven themselves. I mean, that's just the theme of this episode, but I think you gotta add Kenny Pickett to that list, right? I mean, he has just been so, so piss poor. Yeah. I mean, can you put it all on him though too? I mean, just like he,
00:30:07
Speaker
I don't know. I haven't been able to really watch the Steelers play, so I can't fully say anything about him. But the games that I have watched, he hasn't been any, he's been nothing special in my eyes. I mean, Vic, have you watched him play at all? Because I haven't really seen much. I watched him a little bit. I think he played on the Sunday night game versus the Raiders like two weeks ago. He was all right. He was serviceable enough to get a win.
00:30:37
Speaker
Um, I don't think he, he hasn't shown me enough to like, believe in him. Like I, I would be, if I was starting a team, I would be more happy with Justin Fields and Kenny Pickett. Oh, a hundred percent. Yeah, that's yeah. Yeah. I think that's not even a question for me, but here's one for you. Zach Wilson or Kenny Pickett. Oof. That's a doozy.
00:31:04
Speaker
I think that's a 50-50 toss up really, man. I mean, I personally am going to go with probably Pickett just because I don't love Zach, but that's off just liking someone. I mean, Pickett, I would go with Pickett too. He can get yards. He could get a few first downs. Zach recently, excluding that last Sunday night game versus the Jets, versus the Chiefs, he hasn't been able to get any yards.
00:31:34
Speaker
10 out of 10, I would take, I would take picket, but if Zach can continue to play like you did on Sunday night last week, then maybe that can change my mind. But, but going to the other side of the ball, I mean, with the winning team, CJ Stroud, he's looking like the offensive rookie of the year candidate right now that
00:31:54
Speaker
And one thing I wanted to ask you guys is, you know, obviously he went, uh, was, did he go second overall behind Bryce Young? I think so. We'd have to get a fact check on that. I'm not a hundred percent sure. I know he was the second quarterback taken off behind Bryce Young, but I mean, considering what's happening in Carolina with Bryce Young, I know he was dealing with an injury one week and I mean, they're sitting at Owen for, they're looking pretty bad too. That's another team that,
00:32:21
Speaker
is probably up for worst team in the league right now. But do you think that the Panthers missed an opportunity to get a guy like Stroud, you know, a bigger, more, you know, I'd say more dual threat in a sense and just more athletic quarterback and CJ Stroud? I mean, I don't I, I personally haven't even watched Carolina enough either to make that. But I mean, CJ is obviously probably the more athletic quarterback just being a bigger guy.
00:32:52
Speaker
Um, but I don't know. I, I really don't have too much to say about these guys. I just, I just know that, you know, CJ is coming in looking hot and he's getting the job done, which is, which is nice for them. And I don't know, Vic, have you, I mean, you probably, you watched a little more college football, so I didn't get to see these guys kind of fill up. So CJ was a baller at Ohio state, dude. He was, he was fun to watch. Um,
00:33:18
Speaker
But in the NFL, you always wonder who's going to be able to make it in the NFL and who's going to be the bus. And I think it's too early for the Bryce Young, especially on, it's hard to say because they're both on teams that are pretty similar. The Texans weren't good before, but I don't know if it's coaching or what, but he is in a perfect system. CJ is striving.
00:33:42
Speaker
he's doing amazing. It's fun to watch, especially like, I think he's, he's close or at the record for like most passes about an interception or something like that. I know. Yeah. He's been, yeah, he's been balling and he's, it's super cool to see like a rookie be like a fantasy relevant quarterback. I mean, it's fun to like Anthony Richardson as well. It's like, it's fun to watch those guys, especially like when you get guys like Bryce young and those other rookies that come in and they struggle, it's hard to watch. So it's, it's cozy.
00:34:13
Speaker
Yeah, I personally agree with you. I think it's a little too early. I've just been listening to some other podcasts that a lot of analysts are claiming that the Panthers blew a chance on, they decided to go the Bryce Young route rather than CJ Stroud, because a lot of people thought that CJ Stroud was the better option coming out of college. So Vic, you watched in college last year, do you think CJ Stroud was a better option coming out than Bryce Young?
00:34:40
Speaker
Yeah, I would have picked CJ Stroud. Like, definitely I, I just think he's, he's a little bit more accurate. And like Mario is saying, he's, and you were saying he's, he's definitely built more like NFL ready than Bryce Young. It's kind of funny watching Bryce Young out there and seeing him in like football pads, he looks, he looks tiny. So and like, CJ looks definitely a little bit more built and NFL ready. So I would have taken him.
00:35:11
Speaker
Yeah. So, um, kind of since I, you know, haven't really been able to watch them a game that I'm actually super excited for this week. I'm kind of moving on is the Niners versus the Cowboys, which is in my eyes, I think you got the game of the week right here. Big one, big one in the NFC are the Cowboys for real or the Niners for real. Um, who do you guys got? Well, I'll go first on this one. I think that,
00:35:40
Speaker
the Niners lucked out yet again with a big game like this. You know, of course they're at home. They always get that luck. Can't stand it, but I'm going to go. I honestly think that the Niners are going to prove. Yet again, that you know they're just going to feed McCaffrey. CMC is on an absolute tear right now and that defense. You know Cowboys there they struggled against the Cardinals, but then they showed what they're capable of yet again against the Patriots.
00:36:09
Speaker
So which, I think what it's going to come down to for me is which Cowboys defense are we going to see? You know what I mean? Are we going to see a Cowboys defense that, you know, really their main focus is to, you know, stop CMC and blitz the hell out of Brock Purdy, make him uncomfortable. Or are we going to see just kind of more a laid back Cowboys defense that's just going to allow the Niners to just march down the field? I got the, I got the Niners though. I got the Niners.
00:36:38
Speaker
Yeah, I, I would definitely take the Niners too. I think they're obviously right now the best team in the league. Um, but I totally agree. I think it comes down to like what defense that the, the Cowboys are gonna, are gonna bring out. Um, and I think that also the offense too, I mean, they, they really struggled against the Cardinals. So it's kind of, it's kind of both sides if they can come out.
00:37:04
Speaker
uh, firing in all cylinders, then that might be a game that I still even think then that the Niners will, will prevail. Yeah. Yeah. It's going to be, um, it's going to be interesting to see how the Cowboys respond after. I mean, I guess that did respond this week with it, with a big one that new England, but, um, like you said, with the, with the Cardinal game, that was just one where it makes me not completely believe in them, even though they have proved that, you know, in their wins, they're winning dominantly, but, um, yeah.
00:37:33
Speaker
We have to look at who they've played. They've played the Giants, the Jets, the Cardinals, who they lost to in the Patriots. I don't think any of those teams are a top level team, so I just don't believe in them. And that's why they're going to get smacked around by the Niners. I hope they do. I hope they do. I'm tired of just everyone. Every goddamn year we go through this same thing, it's like,
00:37:58
Speaker
Oh, the Cowboys, the new look Cowboys are going to make the playoffs. They're going to do something finally. And it's like, how many times I got to hear this before everyone just realizes that they're just, they've been another, another team that's just always going to be on the bubble. That's just can never take the next step. Why do you think that is true? That's, you know, that's a tough question. I think it's, is it that, or I think it's, I think it's quarterback play, honestly. I mean, I think they've had mediocre quarterbacks for a long time. They had Romo.
00:38:27
Speaker
I mean, he was mediocre quarterback. They had, you know, I don't know who came in right after him. I don't know. It was Dak. He went from Romo to Dak. Okay. Cool. Yeah. And Dak just coming in and I mean, he's been, you know, on paper, he looks all right, but he, has he really proven anything to anyone when the time is actually, you know, when the spotlight's on him and it's, it's a big game and it's, you know, playoff time. I mean, what do you think to us? No. So.
00:38:55
Speaker
to go off what you guys said last year, they faced off against each other in the playoffs, the Cowboys Niners. And I don't know if you guys recall that game, the Niners won in a low scoring game, 19 to 12, actually. And Dak had two turnovers that led to Niners scores. And I believe we had a podcast way back then, Marlon, we both said going into that game, which Dak are we going to see? Because he came off that absolute
00:39:21
Speaker
terror of a game against the Buccaneers going into that one. He went off and then, you know, when the, when the lights came on against the Niners in a big moment, he struggled. But I kind of want to go back to what you said, Vic, about the schedule for the Cowboys to start the year. The Niners isn't, isn't that too impressive either. I mean, they, they started off with the Steelers, pounded them, the Rams who actually played a good game against them, but the Niners have owned the Rams for a while now.
00:39:51
Speaker
the Giants and the Cardinals. So I mean, I, I could honestly say that the Niners start of the season has been a little weaker. So I just now actually saw that. So I think that this is going to be, this is a huge game for the Niners, but one thing I want to ask you guys is what, who like, which team do you think like is going to like, which team do you think is this bigger of a game for like moving throughout the rest of the season into the playoffs? All that. Oh, I think for sure.
00:40:22
Speaker
the Niners coming off of like last season, especially like that disappointing game versus the Eagles. And they were so ready to be like, take that next, like take that next step and, and go back to the Superbowl. So I think that this is going to be, and, and like you said, there's, there's schedules and then that's strong. I mean, I think everyone, or at least everyone here agrees that the Cowboys are, we don't really know because they lost to the Cardinals, but the Niners have kind of been able to breeze past all their teams. So this is like a real test for them on
00:40:52
Speaker
whether they are legit. So I think this is definitely a bigger game for the Niners. I'm actually on the other side of things here. I'm going with, I think this is bigger for the Cowboys. And the reason that I believe this is because Cowboys are right now three and one. I think if they lose this game, they go down three and two. So then they're, if the Eagles end up winning this week, there are already two games back putting them in a hole early in the season. So with the Niners,
00:41:18
Speaker
I think they have a little room, a little room to breathe. So, I mean, while everyone, you know, why it is a big game, I think they, if they happen to drop this one, I still think they'll come back strong, but the Cowboys, I think if they lose this one, they're really digging themselves in the deep hole. I completely agree with you, Martin. I think I'm going to go with the Cowboys too. And you took the words out of my mouth. I think that if they, it's going to, if they go down this week, there are now two losses back in the,
00:41:46
Speaker
uh, call them to the Eagles and it's going to make it that much tougher for them to, you know, crawl back and win the division. But they do still have the Eagles twice, but it seems like for as long as I remember, they can never beat Philly in Philly. You guys usually always take it to them there.
00:42:03
Speaker
So that's probably a loss. I don't know if they can take it at home, but yeah, coming, if they lose this one, it's, I think this is like a early season playoff game for the Cowboys. Cause they do not want to come. I was listening to the Colin cowherd podcast and he brought this up. Like if you're the Cowboys and you lose this week.
00:42:22
Speaker
you can almost guarantee that you're going to be a wild card if you're in the playoffs, which means you would have to go to Philadelphia and win and go to the Niners and win. And I don't think the Cowboys have what it takes to do that. If they're at home, I think it's they got a little bit more hope. So. Yeah, I mean, I I have to completely agree with you. I think that that's a pretty good way to look at it when you think about the Cowboys. And for me, I just I don't think this year is any different than any other. I think it's just the same pattern.
00:42:52
Speaker
they'll be a decent team and they probably will sleep, you know, sneak into the wildcard or at least give the Eagles a run for their money at the division. But I just, I just still don't see it happening. And I don't think that they're going to be the team that, you know, everyone wants them to be until they move on from deck. All right. So go ahead. I was just going to say, yeah, the,
00:43:19
Speaker
I agree a hundred percent. Um, I didn't really think about it in terms of like schedule and them being back, um, like two games on the Eagles if they lost. So that's definitely a good point. But, um, yeah, I think just their quarterback play has got to, got to improve. If they don't turn over the ball, then they have, they have a chance that it'll be a close game. So we'll see. It's going to be a good one Sunday night football, Dallas Cowboys at the Niners. That's our game of the week here on the podcast.
00:43:48
Speaker
I think that pretty much wraps up this episode. It was a super fun having you, Vic. Definitely have you on again in the future. But one thing I got to say is next week, if the Rams end up beating the Eagles, I got a lot of rubbing it to do. It'll take a while. You got any last words, Mario?
00:44:14
Speaker
Um, if you want to, you know, make a bet on it, then I'm, I'm right here. I'm willing to make a bet. I'm willing to put whatever you want down. Um, but now other than that, I was real, it was real fun having you on Vic. It was, uh, it was a player you, you know, you know, a lot about your football over the last few years. You've, uh, came around nicely. So it's been, it's been fun, man. Yeah. Thanks for having me. And, uh, you're going down this weekend. That's right. Yeah. We got each other. Uh,
00:44:42
Speaker
fun in the fantasy this week. Me and Dawson are actually in the top three in the league right now. So Vic's kind of a little underdog and I'm kind of at the bottom, the bottom of the barrel. I'm making my way back, dude. I'm clawing my way back up the rankings again after a tough first few weeks, but yeah. I got a big one too against Cross's brother first place in the league. So I got to take him down. But anyways, I think that wraps up
00:45:12
Speaker
our episode here at Boise podcasts. Thanks again for tuning in and we will see you guys next time. Peace.
