The Power of Recruiting in Solar Sales

And the reason we're thinking about recruiting, we're hitting the summer months here.

We should all be grinding, should be doing more hours.

It's the summer.

But something I've realized about recruiting is that anytime I recruit, I tend to increase my level of production.

And that should be the first reason in solar, we all know you can make a ton of commissions just on these deals.

And so I hear a lot more than any other door-to-door industry or a lot of sales industry, people are not as focused on recruiting.

Because let's be real, you can make a massive amount of income just by focusing on your own sales.

But I'm going to go through a few reasons why I think you should recruit, even if you haven't really cared about it or focused on it as much.

And then I'm going to share with you a little hack that's been helping me take my recruiting game to another level.

He is recruited for a bunch of different companies, built his own organizations, and is probably, I would say, the top dog in recruiting that I know right now.

And so he's going to go way deeper in it, but for now I'm going to share a couple tips, a couple reasons why you should be recruiting.

Leading by Example through Recruitment

So the first one is what I just mentioned, and that is that every time you recruit, it forces you to lead from the front.

Right now, as I'm recording this podcast, I have two recruits coming out from Florida.

Um, they're flying in right now as I record this and they, uh, they're going to be coming out.

I'm going to be driving them out to their areas.

We're going to be knocking doors together.

They're going to be sending me their new appointments and I'm going to be helping them close them.

So just that alone, I, I know for sure I'm going to be working harder.

pushing harder to get these deals closed for them.

Because when you bring someone out here, you want them to be successful.

It's super important that your recruits see success within their first 30 days.

Because if they don't, if they don't make any commission, very likely that they drop out, right?

And they go do other things.

And so for me, that is a big reason why I recruit and why I think anyone in this game should be focused on recruiting.

Because when you bring someone in, you're going to push harder yourself.

And it's like Michael O'Donnell says, he always goes out and knocks with someone because it forces him to push harder than he would otherwise when he's at a door or when he's in an appointment.

I don't know if he's going to appointments with recruits, but more just door knocking.

Because you want to show these people that you can't take no for an answer, that you can't just, you know, head out after the first no.

You're putting max effort when someone is behind you, checking out what you're doing.

So, and you're probably going to work more, right?

Because you're not going to take recruits out and go work an hour for the day, right?

If you want them actually getting results, you're going to show them, hey, this is how work needs to be done.

This is how many hours it takes.

This is how many people you need to talk to.

And hopefully they see some objections because that's something that happens.

Sometimes I take people out and I get two appointments in the first 30 minutes.

And I'm like, well, freak, this isn't usually how it works, but it can be done.

So hopefully you don't get results that quick because you want them to have kind of realistic expectations too.

And then on top of that, if they're new recruits, maybe you're running set or closer model.

Hopefully they're giving you some appointments.

So they're going to go out on their own.

You're going to be getting their solar appointments and you're going to be not only helping them, but helping yourself because you're making a commission off those appointments as well.

So that's number one, forces you to lead from the front.

Number two, it forces you to teach.

So in sales, we don't truly know how to close.

We don't truly know how to set appointments.

We don't truly know any of this stuff until we can teach it to other people until it's been proven.

And so that's why I always encourage people on the podcast, you should be trying to get in teaching opportunities.

Are you digesting the stuff you're studying every day that you should be?

Well, I don't know.

And you're probably not going to know until you try to teach it to someone.

So if you're new, try to see if you can get out and run and lead a team training.

It helped me tremendously as I was starting, as I went to my managers and said, hey,

do you guys mind if I run the training this week?

And they were extremely grateful because they were doing trainings like three times a week.

They tend to run out of material to train on.

And then it was helping me because I was able to teach others and truly digest the content I was studying, right?

And so as you recruit,

Hopefully you're out there teaching recruits.

Hopefully you're showing them how it's done.

And as you do this, it's only going to help you in whatever craft you're trying to master yourself.

So there's the two reasons why you should be recruiting in every moment possible.

Leveraging Instagram for Effective Recruiting

Okay, and so let's talk about this little hack.

I have mentioned it on the show previously.

Anytime you're talking to potential recruits, the old method was you would grab their phone number, say, hey, I'll call you later.

I'll send you a text.

This is what I was taught in Dorador for years and years.

And the new way that has been extremely effective for myself is instead of just grabbing their phone numbers, you go for their social media, specifically if they're on Instagram.

I was first introduced to this by a regional pest control guy.

He, I think he recruited over a hundred dudes, runs a huge region in this company.

And he said, this is the number one thing that's helped him recruit so many dudes is he doesn't go for phone numbers.

He gets them in his DMS.

He sends them his Instagram.

And what does this do?

Instead of just getting like a random arbitrary message, they're getting to see the actual lifestyle behind sales.

And I guess before this, if you're not on social media, if you're not big on Instagram, whatever, I would take some time.

Number one, go set it up.

But number two, just optimize it a little bit.

Talk about what you do.

Talk about how you're in sales.

Post some pictures.

People should be able to get a good idea of what you're actually about.

That's why in your profile, have some pictures of, I don't know, some self-development stuff, some team activities, some awesome trips you went on.

And what's, what's it going to do when people go in and see this and say, oh, wow, this is sweet.

This is what he does.

He's with his sales team in Tahiti right now.

It's going to attract their attention, going to draw their attention.

And instead of just getting a text, now they know way more about you.

Now they see the lifestyle.

way more likely that they're actually going to want to come in and check it out, see what's going on with this, and they're going to believe you.

It's more believable when they see kind of the proof behind what you say.

And you're not just saying, hey, you can make six figures doing this.

And so that's the hack.

Go in and optimize your Instagram, your profile.

And then number two, anyone you come in contact with,

You should always be recruiting, right?

So all the waitresses, all the waiters, all the people you're seeing at the mall, instead of just getting their numbers, get their social media.

And the other thing is it's a little less committing, right?

It's not a huge thing to ask for someone's social media handle, their Instagram handle.

And, you know, sometimes ask them for phone numbers.

Maybe that's a big thing for people, but pretty much everyone, they're going to give you their Instagram handle if they're on that.

So hope that helps go out and try it, but start getting people on the gram, start getting people on social media.

And I've been able to get pretty much set up recruiting meetings several times.

I would say right now I'm averaging like four or five meetings a month just because on Instagram you're pumping out content.

You're pushing people towards your Instagram and they're seeing what you're all about.

And I'm not recruiting all these people I set up meetings with, but I am setting up meetings just from the attention that people, just from the content they see that's put out on Instagram and kind of lifestyle they see that I'm about.
