Family Tensions Surface

you
00:01:11
Speaker
I was down here and I was thinking about you. I'm all right. You can talk to me if you want to about anything. I learned a lot in rehab. Tell me. I learned from my mistakes. I learned that I had to open up and talk about what's going on for me. I'm listening. Things changed for me when you adopted Malcolm.
00:01:40
Speaker
Of course they did. You gained a brother. Yes, Mom, I gained a brother, but more than that. More Anthony, more... I was a good son, right? You are a good son. Three in the side. So when you acquired a new one, I felt... Acquired? What word do you wipe? You're talking about a human being.
00:02:08
Speaker
Well, you took me and dad to pick out a child to bring home, right? He chose us. Okay, he chose us. We made sure we talked to you about it. Don't shake your head. You were included in the family decision. The point is that you guys didn't really think about me. All I do is think about you. One moment, I had two parents who loved me and listened to me and a life that was all mine. The next thing I know is I'm pitted against someone to keep it. Pitted? Come on.
00:02:38
Speaker
To keep my life the way it was, you saw me struggling. Do you think you struggled more than Malcolm? In this house, yeah. Because you haven't. You have nothing to complain about. You're not letting me talk. Well, not if you're just going to blame your brother. I had no control. Well, you were a child. Every time I did something to get my own, my share, you reprimanded me. You didn't learn a thing in rehab, did you? I did. I figured it all out. I'm trying to share that with you.
00:03:09
Speaker
I see you trying to blame Malcolm for your problems, for your weakness.

Accusations of Favoritism

00:03:14
Speaker
Not him. I'm not blaming him. Take the job your father offered to you. You're not listening to me. I hear you. And you wonder why I ended up in rehab. We've given you every opportunity. Equal opportunity? Better than equal.
00:03:32
Speaker
We shelled out $50,000 so you could get your life back on track. We brought you back into this house to help you. I'm trying to help myself. Am I wasting our savings? We've made a commitment to your recovery. And that's what I'm doing right now. Then don't be envious.
00:03:53
Speaker
When you look at your brother, let it inspire you. Inspired by what? His skin color because it's so much better than mine. You will not speak like that in my house. It's something completely arbitrary, something in your mind I can't even compete with. So what are you going to do? You want to burn a cross in my front yard? I want you to stop blaming me for something you did.
00:04:14
Speaker
What's going on? Her. I tried to talk to her and she insults me. Kenneth, I did not insult him. You always do this. You disregard everything I say. Then you tell your father what you said. Sarah, I thought we agreed. We did. I can't take this anymore.
00:04:30
Speaker
You can't take what? Dad, I gotta get out of here. No, you're not going anywhere. I can't take her. I need my own place. Absolutely not. You can't even function in this household. How are you going to function in the real world? You don't even have a job.

Father's Attempt to Reconnect

00:04:44
Speaker
Sarah, please. You gotta help me, Dad. Son, calm down. I am calm.
00:04:56
Speaker
What are you doing, Sarah? Your son didn't get better at that rehab place. You should hear the things that he just said to me, and you know what? What? I blame you. Me? I'm checking the meat.

Business Opportunities with Malcolm

00:05:31
Speaker
Hey, Pop. Hi, Malcolm. Pop, I was thinking. You want to go sail the model boats this weekend? I'd love to. The three of us could. You, me, and them. Yeah. That's a great idea. All right, Pop. I'll make some time. I'd like that too. You want to scotch? I'm all right.
00:06:00
Speaker
So, it's been good working in five points? Challenging. I've been taking the light rail to work. An hour and a half each way. What's wrong with your car? Nothing. It's fine. Since I'm working down there, I want to support the light rail. Oh, that's a dead end. It's too bad, too. People had high expectations. I know. And it's a major sore spot for the coalition. Well, expectations don't always reflect reality.
00:06:30
Speaker
Did you and mom figure out where you're going on vacation? I'm going to be too swamped out at Lowry. Mom is planning on that trip. She'll kill you if you don't take her. Just make sure you cremate me. No worms. Sure, Bob. I'll sprinkle you all over County Claire. Dead or alive, I'm not going to get much of a vacation anytime soon.
00:06:55
Speaker
The entire old Air Force base has been repurposed into housing and commercial lots. It's a huge government investment. And you're the prime? It will be. Have you already

Apologies and Attempts to Mend

00:07:06
Speaker
done all the subs? I'm trying to use as many of my regular guys, but because of the precise government specifications, I need to divvy up the work share. What if I introduced you to some of the guys on Five Points? Well, it would depend on who. Seriously, Dan?
00:07:24
Speaker
I met a few people from the redevelopment district. Braemons work with them, their experience, and have reliable past performance. Get some names together and I'll see who I can use. I can get you a list this week. This is really great, Bob. Look, we're doing business together. Roast is ready.
00:07:55
Speaker
Mom, I'm sorry that I argued with you. I shouldn't have said what I said. I didn't mean it. That's all right. No, it's not. And I apologize. Thank you, Lord, for our food and our family. Amen. Amen.
00:08:17
Speaker
Mesh potatoes, Kenneth. Why, thank you, Sarah. My favorite, the potato. The food of the peasant. A story in every meal and a meal in every story. Tonight's story starts a long time ago on the lowly Emerald Isle. You better keep your hands off me, Lucky Charms. And me potatoes. There's a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow.
00:08:47
Speaker
He practiced a lot. Come on, it wasn't that bad. I still love you, me little lassie. Hey, if you'll still have me, Dad, I'm ready to work. Hey, I'm glad to hear it. You're hired. What are you going to be doing? Whatever Dad needs. How about you start by interviewing the Five Points guys for me? Interviewing for what? My Lowry project.
00:09:16
Speaker
Malcolm can introduce you around the Five Points neighborhood. You two can do the interviewing together. I need some qualifying subcontractors. I suggested we hire some companies out of Five Points. I didn't

Future Plans and Family Support

00:09:29
Speaker
know you were working with Dad. Well now both of my sons are working for me. It's a good opportunity for smaller businesses in Five Points to get in with Dad's company. But there are some requirements that we'll need to keep in mind, Anthony. Okay.
00:09:42
Speaker
Hey mom, I'm advising a client on his loan application for a HUD property over an uptown area. Near the hospital? Exactly. Corona in 23rd. My office has several properties listed over there. It's the next HUD neighborhood. HUD properties? Well no, there's not a lot of room for those. Well, this family was trying to buy a HUD home. They were denied a loan based on an inability to show documented steady employment and income history.
00:10:10
Speaker
I look through the application, they've got the down payment, and their case isn't uncommon for people in five points. If the loan is for low income anyway, I can't see why they were denied. Loan cap limits, bureaucracy, clerical errors, habits, and practices. It's just like any other government-run process. It always feels unfair. Whatever the sense of fairness is, it doesn't matter.
00:10:35
Speaker
How about you make a call to the loan officer on their behalf? I'm not sure that would do anything. If it's hinging on the loan officer's judgment call, then we can help leverage them over. It's possible. I think it's worth a try, Dad. They're a really nice family who could use this opportunity. I'm sure there are a lot of really nice families who could use this opportunity. But I'm helping this family. Your father will call the bank. Yeah, sure.
00:11:04
Speaker
But, Malcolm, you're the one who should go in and see what can be done. Thanks, Dan. This is a great road stop. Thank you. I want to go sail the model boats this weekend. Hey, you up for it, Anthony? You still have my boat. Your father rafted in bubble wrap and kept it safe for you all these years. My sailboat. Yep. What was the name you gave it?
00:11:34
Speaker
Big Orange. Yes, Big Orange, that's right. You think we could come up with a better name than that? Well, it was Big and Orange, if you remember. I just always thought that it was a lame name. You never said so. I think you even cut out a tiny nameplate out of wood and glued it to the front of the ship. Intricate little thing it was, too.
00:11:59
Speaker
He hand carved the leveling on the sides and hand carved the letters into them. Anything worth doing. Then you stained them and outlined the lettering in gold. You were always so into the details. How long did it take you to cut out that nameplate anyway?
00:12:16
Speaker
I don't know. Yeah, you do. You always remembered how long things took. One hour to clean your room, son, and then one hour of saxophone practice, and then you can have one hour of television after dinner. Don't tell me you can't remember it because I know you can. Maybe 10 or 15 hours of work. If I had to guess.
00:12:36
Speaker
All I remember is you three tracking a goose poop on your shoes. Nothing like a carpet covered in poop. Sarah won't hurt anything. It isn't like the human stuff. It's just grass and seeds. Grass and seeds, dad? Honey, I know I'm tracking crap through the house, but it's healthy and natural and clean. It's a big orange. Big orange. Where are you going?
00:13:06
Speaker
I'm queasy. It's not the roast, is it? Burn the boats. Make an effort to help him through this.
