This week on the WILD Onez Podcast, we're joined by Anna Barrow for a conversation full of swimrun stories, endurance grit, and the kind of mindset that keeps you moving forward even when things don't go to plan. We talk about how Anna found her way into sport and discovered swimrun, what hooked her from the very beginning, and some of the chaos, lessons, and unforgettable moments from races like Casco Bay. From race tactics and chafing struggles to broken paddles and bouncing back under pressure, Anna shares what it really looks like to stay resilient in endurance sport. We also dive into her running background, Boston Marathon dreams, balancing training with the demands of med school, and why getting outside continues to be such a powerful part of her life. Along the way, we talk about women in endurance sports, redefining strength, and saying yes to new challenges. If you love swimrun, running, adventure, and hearing how tough people stay grounded through it all, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

Speaker: Hello and welcome to episode 17 of the Wild Ones podcast. I am your host, Sarah. And I'm your host, Viv.

Speaker: Again, I can't believe we're already on 17. So crazy. Every episode of this episode. I don't think that's not going to be a part of the intro. It's like, oh my gosh, we made it this far? Wow, look at us go. We're going to be on episode like 200 and we're still going to be like, wow. Wow, 200? Every week, every week. Just so surprised. So fun.

Speaker: I love it. Viv, what have you been up to recently? Man, um I'm going to apologize because I don't know if Pippa's going to bark recording this intro, but she's currently on my lap. and Like.

Speaker: it's a birthday week I know I have a one -year -old puppy now they're they're puppies until they turn Freaking. Maybe. Never. They're all they're all they're all puppies. so But, no, I've been chilling with the dogs this week. um This was my last, like, big week.

Speaker: um Before. Like I kind of deload a little bit. Although I looked at my workouts this at the beginning of this week and I don't know if it's much of a deload. so we're going have to have a conversation about that.

Speaker: with ah with a coach. so but it's been it has actually been really good last weekend i had some big big stuff and everyone's like oh my gosh why are you waking up at four in the morning and i was like guys we live in louisiana It's...

Speaker: So... freaking hot during the day and I like heat training like I am the first one to Climb up the hill heat train like really know like it's gonna suck, but it will pay off so much in the long run And.

Speaker: It's been pretty unbearable the last like two weeks. So I've been really trying to, I'm i'm a butt crack of Donner. Everyone's like. who like how are you getting all of this stuff done and I'm like four in the morning that's literally it and then i like Do nap. and There's some days where I try and get a nap. And other days where I just close my eyes. for 20 minutes and I'm like, that's great. That's all I need.

Speaker: So we're functioning, but I'm very excited to get closer to world. um i do have a world's partner finally yeah which i'm very excited to say um you'll have to wait uh we'll even telling people um What's it called? Through the grapevine. so You'll have to wait until the world's post, y 'all. Maybe we'll have have her on here. I'm very excited to stay in the women's category. So it it is ah it is a female partner.

Speaker: um So yeah, I um will have to work on a different language. So we'll be well it'll be fun. It'll be great. So I'm very excited to read. With her. We've never met.

Speaker: We've been connected through a variety of swimrun channels. So I'm very, very excited for that. So stay tuned. We're two weeks out officially from it, um which is wild. I feel like this has been the longest. coming race um out of the entire year so i'm i'm very very excited to see what happens But, yeah, so lots of training. Work's been crazy. And, you know, life has just been like, you know what? You're not going to have time for anything else. which

Speaker: I'm okay with, so it's okay. I get to snuggle with my dogs and that's it. Sarah, what have you been doing? You've been home renovating, too, slightly. Well, first of all, I am so excited to watch you guys crush this race. And I've been seeing all of the work that you've been putting in the last couple weeks, too. And you're just killing it. Absolutely crushing the miles and the yardage and the pool. and like ah Yeah, I just cannot wait to see how you guys' is archipelago adventure.

Speaker: goes soon. um Very sad. I'm not there. but I know I'm gonna miss you yeah I know it's like this year has definitely not been The summer that I was hoping for or the summer that I thought I was going to have. But yeah we're still working on finding.

Speaker: some answers on the health things last week I actually got. an endoscopy. So how did that go? uh I mean, it was good. I was like weirdly sore for like two days after that, which I was not expecting. Did you go to pop school?

Speaker: No, they gave me a Sprite afterwards. Oh, that's lame. I know. Oh, lame. If you're going to get an endoscopy, you're going to be like, give me the Popsicle, man. I should put that in the review. Did not get a Popsicle. One star.

Speaker: but yeah still trying to figure out all the health stuff and kind of you know still a bit frustrated with it and Just trying to do all of the movement that I can. Been taking a lot more yoga classes, which I think has been really good for my body and my brain with everything. um So yeah, just. still keeping on moving my body in happy ways.

Speaker: and also trying to paint our house. Which... There's a lot of work in housework. Talk about a workout. That is a workout. obviously like You got to like strip some of the paint and then...

Speaker: Like... prep all of the siding and then like fill all the gaps with the caulk and then like Yeah, just so much prep work that I had no idea that went into painting and this is like four weeks now. that we've been slowly chipping away at it, quite literally. But we're almost there and I'm very excited for it to be finished.

Speaker: That's really exciting. Yeah. other than that i don't nothing nothing crazy is going on over here Oh, my gosh. Well, we've had, a I mean, a couple of, um I don't know if anybody, Leadville was today while we're recording.

Speaker: the level 100. um Women showed up. Um... This year. And. ah ah What was it? Her last name's Hickory. um I just Googled it. McKendree. McKendree Hickory won the women's race. This is her debut 100.

Speaker: Within 1939, She's a baddie. Which is insane. So and like... absolutely crazy so it's it's been wild to to watch um I think I don't know if we touched on the Last Souls Ultra as well. That was a wild.

Speaker: Last Man Standing, Backyard Ultra in Germany. And I think that probably had the best. live coverage I think we've had of any race so far like Kim and his team did such a good job handling that race.

Speaker: Literally. Live. in English and in German. um So I think we're going to start seeing more of that. Even Leadville's coverage was more than that. than they've had in in years past them.

Speaker: um that was That was incredible. And while I was watching last hole. Souls Ultra. I was also watching One water race. oh That was... This was this past week. And that was Tamara.

Speaker: Mara absolutely killed it. And... Like... I'm so proud of Eureka! Like, it's just I'm so proud of all of the women that showed up.

Speaker: We're either navigators, we're on the course. like It. was an incredible showing from the female athletes. and um It. It's just like jaw dropping that every, every year, just this race, I think.

Speaker: It gets better and better because... People are learning. from it like i think more people were fueling correctly more people were um they at multiple attempts at this race, and there's this huge crossing.

Speaker: I'm blanking on the name of it, but it's like seven and a half to eight K of swimming. That's like two and a half to three hours. strictly of swimming. Which is wild because depending on what time you cross...

Speaker: It could be cold night. It could be wavy. It's insane. But when like all the teams crossed that, I was like, all right, all of them are going to finish. Because if you if they could do that. and Okay, but the... team for like the fourth team that came in was so close they had like an hour less than an hour literally They had 17 minutes to spare. 17 minutes.

Speaker: And that was our our our wonderful, wonderful people that we love from ARC so much. um That. Absolutely. Killed that race. They did not give up You could tell towards the end they definitely were getting tired. They were exhausted.

Speaker: They had... So much going on. That like they were getting lost. But they never... They never fully lost it, I would say. like Um,

Speaker: And I'm just so proud of all the teams that finished because I know like. The Aussies have finished every single year that they've done it, which is incredible. So that was team one. And then there was team three.

Speaker: I believe at team... Um. seven and then Team... So... 1905? No, 1905. um We came prepared, guys. Yeah. I know. I'm blanking off. I can't remember either. I know. Congratulations to everybody. I was literally crying tears of joy for all of these racers when they would cross these.

Speaker: mile marks where like I knew like they had been out the year before or like something else happened some somewhere along the line so it was just like It was incredible to see. um So congratulations, everybody. We are so proud of you.

Speaker: um We can't wait. standing on that start dude saying saying yes to that race into that yeah absolutely incredible way to go guys insane so we're that's our that's our huge swim run plug for the week because yeah

Speaker: They did so good. I literally look forward to one water race for like months in advance. Yeah. I'll be like, Matt, guess what? Two weeks till one water race. He's just like. Cool! i I converted so many people in my run club. I was like, they're like.

Speaker: Because they were watching Last Souls and they're like, well, what do we watch next? And I go, have you heard of One Water, guys? And they go, what? And I was like, it's live. And they're like, this is insane. I was like, it is wild what goes into it and like Honestly, like they.

Speaker: have um done live racing over the last five years like champs like they have these these media runners as well That like this entire team that gets put together is so amazing.

Speaker: So. Absolutely incredible, well -done job from the race directors all the way down to the volunteers, to the boat captains. like It's just been... Like.

Speaker: one of our favorite races, obviously, like Sarah and I get. prepped. in advance for this and we're not even racing so like we we love it we tell everybody about it And that those live streams are probably our favorite things.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, speaking about... Baddies. oh my gosh sarah who do we have on the podcast this week excited to share this podcast with you guys this week. We have Anna. Barrow.

Speaker: On the pod. vi and i have both had the opportunity to race with her now and she is absolutely a gem of a human and an incredible athlete like this girl like her endurance her spirit her everything literally like just who she is bike.

Speaker: Yeah. It was a dream racing with her at Worlds a couple years ago, and Viv had the opportunity to race Casco Bay with her. Oh, my God. It was amazing. we'll get that We'll get into that a little bit during the episode. But.

Speaker: Yeah. We're so so so excited to welcome Anna to the podcast. Woo! woo

Speaker: Hello Anna, welcome to the Wild Ones podcast. Welcome! Thanks for having me. We're so excited that you're here. Hold on. I know.

Speaker: Nope, wrong one. Shoot. Sarah now has, by the way, we should have said that Sarah has sound effects. With her... This Zencaster has updated itself and Sarah is the only one who has the power of sound effects now.

Speaker: she's having Too much fun with them. i mean you have to test it out right it's a new toy so That's so funny.

Speaker: Did you have sound effects before Viv? No. Okay, now every now now sound effects are just new. it's a whole new like a whole new world that we're in now it's wild i got you That's so funny You got a facelift. It's great.

Speaker: like Are you calling it that? That's fantastic. It kind of is like because you log into it and it looks completely different now. Well, maybe maybe this... is Right? fus When you texted me saying Castor got a facelift, I was like, I.

Speaker: Hey, I thought this was going to be Zoom. And then I was like, what the heck? Who who is Zancaster? I thought you meant fit like actually. first i was Like Vega, like drama. and because i'm also not in like the celebrity world so i really thought that that was sort talk about that's how there it That's okay. All good. It's amazing. oh well hopefully maybe like maybe this will make amy bush happy with her audio so Ha!

Speaker: we're ah we're We're here to please Amy Bush with our audio from our last couple episodes. so Fingers crossed. But um welcome, Anna. to To the wild ones. um We're so excited to have you. um This is really exciting because Sarah and I have both had the pleasure of racing with you.

Speaker: um Two different races. Finally, we can say that. um which is so, so fun. But. Let's back it up to the beginning. How did you get into sport? And why do you think swimrun's a good idea?

Speaker: Fair enough. Um. So I grew up a swimmer, so I went to college. and then actually my ex -boyfriend. He... and his mom did Casco. like one of the very first times that it was.

Speaker: I think maybe like 2017, 18. and then when we were in college he was like you would really like this like you should do this. And then it was like a couple of years later and I met Paige. who was my original swimrun buddy.

Speaker: when we were living in. Southern California. And she was like, Yeah, I'll. I'll try it sure. um And so then we were like, well. The only one we know of is Casco. Yeah.

Speaker: and we were living in san diego so we were like I guess we'll just go to... port This is what it means. But I went to college in Maine. So like, i that's how I knew Portland. That's right. Yeah. Where did where did you go to college?

Speaker: I was at Pete's. college. Nice. smaller black Yeah, so that's kind of how I got into it. after college still wanting to swim. Really loving running. and I...

Speaker: despise the bike. I've tried. So I was like, I can't do triathlons. Don't blame you. um Yeah. And I do think everyone should do swimrun.

Speaker: because i think it's super accessible lots of different levels anyone can run It's a great way to just like be out in nature and it's just fun. It's just like a fun style of racing.

Speaker: um you can go hard but it's also just out in nature frolicking in the woods and then Sometimes. fighting the ocean but like most of the time i feel like I feel like...

Speaker: flopping through the water, which is also really fun. That's, so yeah. oh The fighting through the ocean part is so true. um I think... Anna, you might need, like, ah maybe orcas was, like, the nice water for you. But, like.

Speaker: You've done worlds. with Sarah last, or two years ago, and then casco this Casco this year was nice in the beginning, and then we definitely had some strong currents towards the end there. But yeah you and Sarah, like, got airborne.

Speaker: Oh yeah, that's why I was like, sometimes you're fighting. So I was like, oh, no, you're just like flopping in the water. And then I was like. I remember that one swim. The pig swim. I don't remember which one it was it was long and I just remember being like all right we just gotta go yeah because like we looked at each other before we got in the water and we're like Oh my gosh, like...

Speaker: And then we're just like, well, there's only one way to get it done. go And next thing you know, we're like in the water and I'm behind you. And I'm just like. It felt like I was. physically getting air on the waves. slide ah Yeah.

Speaker: like just i remember because I... tend to lead a lot. but Usually I can't feel. the person behind me. it from the tether But I felt you on that one, mostly because I think we were just stretching so far and like you were actually pulling me backwards. And I was like, OK, here we go.

Speaker: boy words please But I think that's when you were like. I would go over the wave, then you would go over the wave. That's probably why I was feeling it so strongly, too, then, from the rebound from the tether. Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. That's wild. Is the pig swim you like spot to the middle? And then. Mm -hmm Okay. that Yeah, it was that one because I remember I was like... I can't. barely even see the middle yeah you're like I don't even know where I'm swimming so far well I had like eaten it right before that swim entrance too it was like slipper slippery and I just like kind of like so my feet went out underneath me and I remember getting up and just like looking at the water and I'm like oh gosh you're like you've got to be kidding me but

Speaker: So fun. I can't remember the rest of the swims that race though. I feel like. Anyone doesn't vent for. yeah You tend to black out most of that race, as I found out.

Speaker: like you just When you do it, you're like, oh, okay. Like, I remember this, but, like... Not until you're actually doing it. I couldn't tell you where most of the race goes until you like you have a conversation. You're like, oh, yeah, I guess that's where you turn. Okay, that makes sense.

Speaker: Yeah, I had that at Casco. We did it that fog year. Yeah. oh That was my first swim round ever, which was... crazy but Then when we did it this year, I was like, whoa.

Speaker: I remember parts of this. But it was like. I was all over the place. Yeah, i totally different. I was like, wait. Hang on. i look and I was like, do you remember this gate? And she's like, I don't. I don't know. Maybe it looked different.

Speaker: And I was like, yeah, we totally ran this. and But then I was like... Now I have no idea where we are. I just remember the gate because I was like, this is weird. Like, why is the gate closed? Well, then you're like, there's a peer jump right after this. And I was like.

Speaker: You're like no. I think we ran like another mile or two. and then we we Yeah, we ran a long longer long time there. I was like, are we not at the end of this island yet? And I don't even know where we were at that point. point like I in my brain like had the like the course visual. like visually, but I was like,

Speaker: I have literally like no clue where we are. Because, like, we the fog here, I mean. So... Was it two years ago? Anna did it with Paige and Sarah and I did it. And I think we're all signed up for World Series. And so we're all like on the ferry. The fog is not lifting. You cannot even see.

Speaker: the island next to us a boat next to us like it was that crazy. I'm like, all right, well, I guess we're just going to go and then. they waited a little bit like maybe an hour And then like, all right, we're just going to do like a half Z course here. So it took us to like big. Bigger Little Diamond. and We did a couple laps there. And they're like, all right, so we're going to go to Peaks, meet up with Short Course. and or We didn't have experience at the time, so it was like just Short Course.

Speaker: and then from this point we're just going to go And... um do a lap around peaks. And I think that day we did like 20 miles of running. We did a lot of running. that running And like them.

Speaker: Yeah. And you want to know my favorite part? I was. I... I had never done some run before and I was wearing. what it is. That's right. I remember that because we talked about that on the ferry.

Speaker: Good stuff. Miles on. Concrete. lot of issues It was crazy. My knees hurt, but... I very much learned quickly. You can wear trail runners.

Speaker: Ideally well draining ones, but it doesn't have to be well draining. and Yeah. we'll get you through. Yeah. much more More than just water shoes.

Speaker: That's, yeah. That was, oh, yeah. i That. from I mean, that was, I don't. We were so pretty new, too. I think that was our... one before world we're like this would be perfect practice we'll go through all these islands and then we're like Just kidding.

Speaker: We're done. We're not actually going to get the practice that we thought. Just made a lot of running. But the actual course, I think now. See you. I'm like saying it. I'm like, yes, this is definitely.

Speaker: world's prep. For sure. Yeah, very similar terrain, which was Nice. So Anna, what hooked you on swimrun at that first race? Yeah, why'd you want to come back after the fo after the fog?

Speaker: Um. Overall, the community. i think that's a big portion of it yeah it's like the people are i think really special um Yeah, everyone that I've met has just been. really amazing and just inspiring.

Speaker: So I think that was the major drawback. I also was like, I still love. open water swimming and trail running. And this is the combo of it. Also sometimes it's like unfinished business.

Speaker: You're like. All right, I gotta try it again. to see if I actually like this and then you fall in love with it even more. At least I did. so How satisfying was it for you to to go back and actually race the course? take together this year.

Speaker: I was really satisfied I was like wow this is crazy what could have been. Bye. You're like, this is what everybody talks about? Okay. like Yeah.

Speaker: No, definitely felt good to go back and actually see it. like finish some of that unfinished business from the first one. Yeah. Yeah. No, truly. And, like... really unfinished business because like it never even started.

Speaker: Yeah, it's just like funky. It's just yeah We did some on some islands, then we got... shuttle to this other island. and I got shuttled to a different island. So... And I felt like this time.

Speaker: also knowing Like, I felt like the you and I could, like... race together so i felt like we really went for it which was kind of fun Yeah. do that on. The Casco course was also cool. Yeah. i Think of the shakeout too. Like I know you mentioned this before.

Speaker: Anna's a very strong swimmer, everybody. um That's just like... She came into this and she was like, I'm so sorry. I've not trained my swimming at all. But. Me training swimming is like getting Deanna's base because Like i I found out like.

Speaker: just swim running with people who have, like, grown up swimming more, like, being a college swimmer, too, like, that's just, like... That's been your default for years. And so like we're at the shakeout and I was like, she's like, do you want me to lead? And I was like.

Speaker: If... at any point I think we're finally like and even when I was like if you feel like you need to turn and let me take it or like don't know or whatever like I could take it kind of thing But if you feel... Like.

Speaker: Because the water was a little chilly too. And I know both you and I both run a little bit colder in the water. So like leading the swims does warm you up too. So... um But yeah, Anna did lead.

Speaker: all of the swims until I think the last one and that's when you're like I'm tapping out! Your turn! yeah i don't know if she told you this but like on the left Hey. Okay, the last swim. was only supposed to be at 500 and then it was like It was double.

Speaker: Double. Because I guess they like didn't get it so we could run all the way out to like start the swim. So we had to start the swim. earlier and like swim what we would have run.

Speaker: ah Yeah. So that added like a good 600. and oh my gosh so yeah halfway through that i rolled over and i was like then you gotta to go. And that was, yeah. That felt really nice, so I'm very appreciative of you. as say oh thank god not to mention i literally after we get out of the last one I can tell Anna's tired.

Speaker: And I was like. Let's go up this hill because you finish and you have like a little bit of a beach. And then you have these like. Really weird. wooden stairs? But like, they're just... really just holding the dirt.

Speaker: there like let's sprint up these stairs yeah I was like oh I'm gonna go around like on this path and then like slightly slipped and then I caught myself and I was like all right back to the stairs like We're not going to go around. There's raisins out there. here um and i was just like we're going Because i like I know you go up and there's like a little...

Speaker: but like people like oh yeah it's just a really short finish and i was like oh no it's short like you go up the hill and it's right there. I was like, come on, Anna! No, it was good. I needed the push. Definitely needed the push. so I appreciated that.

Speaker: I think they're out the whole day. That's kind of like we. went back and forth on like hey you know you're feeling strong okay I'm feeling strong um And I think we we did really well feeding ourselves too.

Speaker: I agree. It was just like, all right. We know we have this and we're like, all right, two more gels, even though we don't want to, but we're going to. Also the random petroleum jelly too.

Speaker: Wait, what? King one guy. He like... I guess last year at the race, like someone asked if they had like Vaseline or. petroleum jelly because they were chafing and it was at like the exact time. like maybe like 10 minutes before on the run, I was like, oh, I'm starting to chafe on my neck. And we like show up to this aid station and I have. never been so excited to see petroleum jelly like this is

Speaker: Like lather that everywhere. Where can we put it? And I turned to the guy and I was like. Thank you so much. And he was like, oh, I'm glad you used it. Like someone last year said that they really needed it. And he's like, this is the tub from last year. And I was like.

Speaker: Oh. Game changer. Absolutely. Actually. Do you think there's more chafing with the salt water? Me? Maybe. i So I wore my sleeveless Uto Air with sleeves.

Speaker: um because I knew I was like, well, I'm going to get hot, but I want the option to take my sleeves off. The sleeves stayed on the entire day, so I actually had chafing. right where the sleeve, but I think the... Bib is what did it for me.

Speaker: I think with the where like the chafing was, I think it was the sleep. like the sleeve plus a bit like right there. um with the salt maybe, but... Oh. I was on the box back of my neck, mostly from spotting, but. Yeah. I tend to get that, like, usually. i Yeah, no matter what, I always get.

Speaker: Little - a little neck kiss. Yeah. But maybe it was like a... i mean also this one's just a lot of swimming because i was like because it didn't change but i'm like that was only three and a half or something miles of swimming so And this was like closer to six, right?

Speaker: Yeah. This was a lot more swimming than I think. I mean... This is probably the same amount of swimming. as worlds. Yeah. So... it It really is the ultimate swim run.

Speaker: prep for for it. um And I know that. We had a lot of people do. Is it Olland? This. past Like when we're recording. um They just did it yesterday.

Speaker: um And we had a lot of people. Actually... Greg and Bronwyn, the Boston Wet Sox. Did Casco. Turned around, And a week later. Dead World Series Holland. That's insane.

Speaker: And I have no idea how they... Do you guys do that with worlds though? We did that. Oh, yeah, World and Orcas. Yeah, that was two weeks later. At least one week. like We had we two weeks in between. And this is like, we're we're traveling.

Speaker: Maybe back. three times this on our side. I have no idea when they left. So they took their their entire family. They took their three kids. And then I thank one of their sets of grandparents too.

Speaker: um Yeah, and then... They're going to be at Worlds as well. so That's going to be exciting to see. No, they're coming back, and that but they're going to leave the kids.

Speaker: in the states while they go to worlds so i think it'll be a shorter trip for them But. I don't know how many times they've done the race, but like. Just sing. Ah! I love seeing everybody.

Speaker: um at the race and even meeting new friends too. Like I met all of Anna's like swim teammates. Like they, they're awesome. Um, they're so so fun um so please tell your friends i mean if you listen to this you guys are awesome um they welcomed me like and it was Incredible. um But we were playing tag with like this one guy.

Speaker: I think his name is Jason. I think... But. We did play tag, and then at, like, literally one of the last islands, we're like, what's your name? He's like, oh, okay. like But we would catch them on their runs.

Speaker: And then he was like. We should have just tethered to him because he was. lying on the swims. Dude, we would get out, like... like Quarter mile behind him and we would catch him.

Speaker: And they'd be like, you guys are so fast. I was like. Dude, so are you. Yeah, he was crazy in the water. Just like, all right. I'll see you later. Bye.

Speaker: But yeah, no, I think his name was Ethan because I heard Eton. originally but i know someone named ethan so i was like Okay, that makes sense. even. So. I think you're right.

Speaker: But I think seeing like a lot of the experience towards. towards the end or no. experience for a course. Or yes, Brent. Self -client, of course. ah This written team. um That was cool, too. So I was like, oh, another female team. And I was like, oh, they're.

Speaker: i Like how to like be like. different colors they're different we're all different colors It was fun to see everyone in the water, because we all like got in for the like the last swim, and then it was just like a sea of like orange, purple, and red.

Speaker: Okay. People just... That was really cool. Yeah. That definitely became like... Once I got in the front I was like, oh, there's so many people up here. like I didn't realize. Like weaving around. yeah i was like all right i'm just gonna maybe try and stay on this person's feet and then i was like all right no if you guys are i don't even know where you guys are going we're going this way like And that's I think like the problem with like so swimming too is like

Speaker: If you know like, oh, a team's in front of us, like I can draft off them. It's really good if they're going the right direction. But if they're not, you're you're both now going off course and you're like. Hang on, the flag is over here. and I did that ah with Anna, too, because...

Speaker: she was swimming like i before we got before we got it for every swim We're really good about this. We're like, okay. She's like i'm going here But the finish is here because that I was like, yep. Uh -huh, that makes sense. I was like, you see it? Cool.

Speaker: And there's one where, like, I got so disoriented because I saw, like, another team, like, on one side. And I was like. I was like, where are you going? And she's like. The same spot we've been going to the entire time.

Speaker: I was like... Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. But what was funny, I was like. I. You were like, I'm pretty sure it's over there. I'm like. I think it's dead straight ahead. And then you're like, oh. Yeah, that is a flag. You're like, ah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But that was hard because that was a really strong current. That was a strong current. Well, okay, so the little island, little diamond to big diamond.

Speaker: That one Anna and I tried to swim. But... You're literally, nobody can see my hands right now, but. You're swimming like... horizontal like you need to go straight but you literally have to flipped your body because the current was so strong.

Speaker: yeah And I don't know at what point we decided to just walk in. I decided early. Maybe like not even like five yards. Once I was like flat in the water and I felt it, I was like, absolutely not.

Speaker: And then yeah I think you tried a little longer and I was upright already. Cause it was like, it was like maybe thigh deep. so you yeah um you could walk across it but like you were like trudging through it and it's like uh sandbar so it's like sand bottom which was and a strong current going across it. yeah So, yeah, I was upright and you were still phased out. but You're like, good try, good try. I was like, she's got the right idea. I'm going to stand with you.

Speaker: Yeah, because most of the time with swimrun if it is shallow enough where you could walk. But you could still swim. You should swim because it's faster. but Not.

Speaker: Not in this instance. No. No, you would just get swept in it. that's why yeah but I suppose like once you get closer to the island it probably gets a little bit stronger around there too I think it was strong the entire time. Really? crazy Yeah. It was really wild.

Speaker: and you could like see it too like you could watch i was watching like the bubbles and the all the stuff and the yeah it was just it was ah so quick i was like i'm so glad I followed in and decided to stand because I would be like freaking halfway in the bay at this point.

Speaker: You'd have to stay tethered to me and I'd be dragged out there. I'm coming! yes pull you in oh Well, it sounds like Casca was so much fun.

Speaker: It was. definite i fomo hearing about it and watching it and seeing everything. I'd go back. cardbase Yeah, you'd go back. I go back.

Speaker: Yeah. i have I still have unfinished business there, so I do need to go back to Costco someday. I will be back. I think that's better.

Speaker: Yeah, no, what other races I know you've I know you've done orcas. What other races have you done? Swim run wise. and worlds.

Speaker: Out of the... Sorry? Really? So you've done Colorado? once and then you've done worlds twice. And then Costco. An orcas. An orcas. Oh, that's right. Orcas. Yeah. Okay.

Speaker: Which one do you have a favorite? I mean they're all... Oops. I would say Worlds and Casco now that doing Casco like are similar. I mean, obviously Worlds is like double the distance. um But which one do you have a favorite?

Speaker: I think. Orcas and worlds would be like my top. too. I think they're really different races, but I've had really good experiences. with both of them. I think Worlds is just really fun.

Speaker: to just like... be in Sweden. I was someone that lives in the United States, like the traveling and it's like. whole experience The whole experience is really fun. I do also really like the course.

Speaker: I do like. slightly longer runs. Casco is really short. And I think Orca's had a couple. like little bit longer runs, which I liked. Yeah.

Speaker: But yeah, Orcas is also just like super gorgeous. So pretty. It's definitely one of our favorites. Okay, so bring us back to like the start of your running journey. What did what did that look like for you?

Speaker: Yeah. ah I feel like honestly, it goes back to like elementary school. which is great. Back in the day. Oh, actually. i went to like uh Outward Fountain School growing up.

Speaker: and our fitness. like we did a lot of things outside and like backpacking and can't be helped. That's nice. I think our fitness is teacher was like very on it. with us. um so we would like spend the first like 30 minutes of every fitness class starting in like kindergarten like running laps around the park or doing line touches and all of that.

Speaker: um and then he also ran like a after school. Like not. I guess. cross -country team maybe Would be how I live. Okay.

Speaker: So we did that for a long time. um So I always like ran. throughout my like childhood. and then played soccer as well and then In college, I would run in like the off season a little bit.

Speaker: Still mostly swim. And then once I graduated college and I just didn't have ads. easy access to a pool. I was like. Alright, well I guess I'll just start running.

Speaker: And my roommate at the time, she... really loved running. She was like. I want to do a marathon. I was like. All right, let's do it. So we literally like signed up for one the next day after she said that. um And then she and I did a marathon together.

Speaker: which was like super fun that just like really kick -started the the running career. That's amazing. What? How long ago was that? It was 2021. Okay.

Speaker: That's amazing. So that's when you ran your first marathon it was like 2021. Yeah. Well, we did in the spring. We signed up for it. and like the fall of that year and then we did it. and I think it was April of 2020.

Speaker: that's ah That's amazing. And you have... since run quite competitively. in Marathons. Correct. Like you have a ah Boston qualifier.

Speaker: Yeah, I did qualify and one run Boston. end. 24. Did you ruin it? Yeah, I ran Boston in 2015. 24. What was that like? Honestly, that was that was pretty cool it was really fun the whole if You like start way out.

Speaker: And then it's just like a straight line into Boston. um But like all of the towns get like really into it. And so like they come out and like line the streets. It's a ton of...

Speaker: just like people just in general it's like I guess they had done... I think I did Chicago before that and I think that one's slightly bigger. but you're like really condensed.

Speaker: and running through the city. Versus this one, like you start way out and it's like. Yeah, just the road and it's not as big of a city and then you run it Boston. And I had like lived in Boston for two years and all of my friends were there. so like That was really fun. It's a huge party.

Speaker: It is. and like i had gone to the boston marathon like a couple years in a row and like seeing everybody so then like to be in it was just really special. That's so surreal.

Speaker: Yeah, it was really cool. So after college, you moved straight to Boston. After college I moved to San Diego first. Okay. Yeah. And that's when I met Paige and did a year there. And then.

Speaker: I moved. Boston. after that. ah Yeah, I had some ah little life hiccups there when I was. confused on what I wanted to do. um Hey, either way, you got to live on both coasts and experience it.

Speaker: Very much so. No, great decisions. I stand by them. the I was originally supposed to. I was in San Diego. and I was going to go to grad school. I like this. about to commit. end.

Speaker: uh moved to l la area And then I like called my mom and I was like. Amen. I know we talked and I said that I was going to commit. uh yesterday but actually i'm gonna move to boston and probably apply to medical school instead. And she was like, oh.

Speaker: Okay. Fair enough. Cool. That's crazy, but... That's a... really big 180. You're like, that's a choice? Great choice. Stand by it. Great choice. Oh my gosh.

Speaker: And you have um you have a dog. Did your dog make all of these moves? Oh yes! Yeah, he has driven across the country. ah a lot. And he hates the car, which is the funniest part.

Speaker: Oh even better. Do you? Give him special peanut butter. Or does he just kind of have to suck it up? No, he gets... he gets a Special Nuts.

Speaker: He gets really drowsy. Amazing. There you go. Some dogs either love it or hate it. and I'm lucky I'm wearing pants the entire time. It's just like super stressed. so oh You're like, yeah, you need something Yeah, we figured that out on the first on the first trip.

Speaker: Oh that's good. Yeah. Yeah, I got him when I was living in San Diego. and then We drove back to Colorado. for like. a couple weeks. And then we drove back. to Boston. and then eventually Go back, pasta. So now. So.

Speaker: He's driven a lot. yeah he's like get me out of here please thank you Oh very much so. And he is like, in his like little one seat because i have the entire car packed and so he gets one Backseat square.

Speaker: He had a couple of books fall out. onto his seat not on him on his seat at one point they are. You like climbed up over the... um yeah Oh, the address?

Speaker: perch oh Yeah, usually he wears a seatbelt and he's not supposed to. but and he was like super boxed in so i was like ah like I probably don't need to actually buckle you in this time. It's going to be a long drive. and he literally comes over like in between the driver's side.

Speaker: headrest in the door, like onto my back. And I was like, oh, boy. oh We can't do this. Can't do this. You need to be on the highway. And my mom, like, he yanks him over onto her lap. And then he's just, like, freaking out over there, trying to get back into my lap. We, like, pulled over. I was like, all right.

Speaker: You're going to wear your seatbelt.

Speaker: Oh, and you you've officially had him for five years now, right? as of yesterday, which is That's awesome! Doo -dah. Pippa's gonna be one you guys have like close birthdays.

Speaker: See ya. little babies her babies i know yeah her her gotcha i guess gotcha day is like later But I'm like, I just kind of did like with rescue dogs. I feel like you just have to do like the math and be like.

Speaker: Your birthday is going to be this day. That's what I did. The first vet appointment. They were like, he's about 10 months old. so then i like did the math and i was like okay this would be some time in October. and They were like, okay, just choose a date.

Speaker: I like that. All right. 10, 10, 20, 20. There we go. perfect Make it easy for me to remember. No, absolutely. I'm like, hey, we're just gonna pick They're like, oh yeah, approximately this. i All right, this week, great, amazing.

Speaker: God bless all the shelter dogs out there. because They might not even, have like, they could be, like. either born on that day or you're just like, I'm here. I wonder how many rescue dogs have like a birthday on the first of a month.

Speaker: Oh yeah. It's a lot. So easy, probably. First month. There you go. Yeah, no, i I love the dogs. Do you ever take your dog like hiking and running or?

Speaker: Yeah. but not do i So I got him to be a running training partner. Oh, okay. I think he quit on like week two. Bye.

Speaker: he like yeah He really does not like to actually run. so i was like well that's cute but it was funny because i was at the like adoption place. And the woman was like, Like this one, he's like kind of high energy. like Are you going to be able to like exercise? And I was like, yeah.

Speaker: i'm a writer That's that's the goal why I want him. Uh. to like. go on runs. and go to the beach and go to all of these places. um and then like literally like maybe two weeks in like He's only like 40 pounds, but He's like super stubborn.

Speaker: And so like, I'll be like running with him. And then he just like. dead stops. And I'm like, Oh, okay. Ouch. That was painful. um and then just like looks at me takes a look at the plants goes and like meanders and like smells all the flowers lies down for a second and he's like okay now we can walk I was like, all right, so you are not going to be a running dog, but we will go for lots of walks.

Speaker: You can be an interval dog, but you don't know which intervals are gonna be happening. Yeah, and he'll quit halfway through. He does trail run a little bit. If we're on a trail, then he's...

Speaker: help run. Something. So. mostly Mostly a walker, a hiker. Um... That's okay.

Speaker: He's a good boy. okay We have some good adventures.

Speaker: That's so sweet.

Speaker: Does Barrett Pippo run with you? Um... It's really hot here in Louisiana. So like the rule is if the percentage of humidity is different, or percentage of humidity plus the actual air temp.

Speaker: um You have to... That has to be less than like. 150 or 160 and it is well over that right now so in the in the winter time when it gets like December you know November to like March.

Speaker: Um. Bear will run with me, but I haven't ran with Pippa yet. She's still too small, but she's got little legs. So I think having her run is just... Like... Shit.

Speaker: Just... like little speed, like the little cartoon where they're just... rooted it Yeah. That would be her. All right. I don't know. Like a baby stroller. Yeah, there we go. I need to get the but i mean yes i need to get the baby for the Peppa so she can come on the runs. but oh do you have a little one there? Yes, Peppa.

Speaker: The dog. 24 months actually. Yeah, no, literally. I but i actually posted on my story this this weekend. I was like... This is the last weekend that you're going to be count you're counting your how old you are by month.

Speaker: Although we do that for kids. like They're like, oh, it's 24 months. like ah So your kid is two years old. Yes. I'm like, I'm sure when I have kids, it'll probably be like, oh no, it's 24, 15 months. i'm like Yeah, okay, got it.

Speaker: Just over a year. Got it. I feel like I get a year and a half. All right, you can go to 18. Yeah. Just like. A little over one and a half. now you're yeah Now you're one and a half. That's how that works.

Speaker: and your milestones. I don't know. Right? There you go. I have no idea. I mean, yeah, I was like, no, no. I was like, no, that doesn't say too much there. But we can speak for our dogs.

Speaker: Pippa counted her last month. A couple days ago. Yes. Oh, yeah. Congrats, Pippa. Congrats. I know.

Speaker: Literally in dog years, so she's she's getting there.

Speaker: Yeah, they're I mean, i I love having... the animals and like when I can exercise them because I... I don't know about you guys, like, there's days where, like, I sometimes, like, if I'm not training for anything, like, I still want to leave the house.

Speaker: Then I'm like, oh you have to leave the house. You should leave the house. We should go on a walk Alright, let's go outside.

Speaker: No, they definitely could drop it out. Yeah. Anna, were we having that conversation during the race? I was talking to somebody. We're like... Someone said... Like... Yeah, do it. That was me. I was - I have so many conversations that I'm like, they all blend together and I can't remember who it was.

Speaker: Well, you said your friend... Yeah. Right? She works from home. And so like. The day that she, like, her, like, off days or something. Something like that. she like came out and she was like, wow.

Speaker: I don't think I've left the house in like... two and a half days. Because she, like... yeah she was like i did all of my work i had already gone to like the grocery store and just like I mean, she had a crazy. physical. work stuff going on so she was just working all the time but It's like, I... Yeah, I haven't gone outside.

Speaker: do half days that's actually so real though like working from home like I work remotely and work from home now and I have to be so intentional about yeah making myself go outside like in the morning. and then I've been trying to like go to the gym during lunch just to get out of the house and like actually socialize with people. Yeah. Which is something that I found I really need during my day and work day. So working remotely has been like.

Speaker: a learning process for me but it's so easy to just like be hyper focused on what you're doing especially when you have a heavy workload that you're just like wow it's been three days and I haven't left Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. But thankfully we have dogs too. And so if we... bike. Art. walking them in the morning and then again after they get dinner they'll just follow us around the house and we'll take them for a walk and so they're really great at reminding us when we need to get out of that. And I love them for that.

Speaker: Dogs are the best. There we go. I think like also like just work. on the note of like working from home like if you are working from home like signing up for races you literally have to leave the house to train unless you have a treadmill and everything there like You have to get outside and find other people to do these, like, to do races and to train. and preach the Sermon Gospel out there. and um Talk to people.

Speaker: um which is so important. but Anna, do you do any um like master's groups or any run clubs in in Colorado? Um... That's the end now.

Speaker: I would love to like join an actual master's team. however their practice schedules are. a little bit. at inconvenient times for me. Yeah. i haven't been able to do that but i have a couple of my high school buddies and some from some school that also swim. So we end up usually swimming.

Speaker: together. And Kate. I'll be. Is that pretty good? Oh, actually, no, she might be back in town now. Yeah, I think she's back maybe back in the States. Where in the world is Kate? Are you going to share your location?

Speaker: Yeah. She's in San Diego. Oh, okay. Well, not she's not back. One day. but anyways so i have like a collection of people that i swim with And then... I've gone to a handful of uh run clubs.

Speaker: But again, my. Schedule is just like super chaotic. So. like they would run on like I think it was like Friday mornings. which is great. But then I had like a series of exams on Friday mornings. And I was like.

Speaker: Oh. cool so my rhythm is just like way off so i'd be like go two weeks and then i can't go for like two months and So. At the moment. So how was it training for Casco with the busy schedule that you have right now? with med school.

Speaker: On. I stand by you have more in med school. i the whole presentation i was like You have more time than you think. If you use it wisely,

Speaker: you definitely have to like make sacrifices but like running and swimming and training was like one of the things that I definitely prioritize like a lot just for Those are the things that make me feel like me and I was like I need to keep that going and it makes me better at school. so So yeah, it was definitely a little bit hard and I definitely had to like plan things out.

Speaker: which as a non -planner. from the very very non -planet person. um that would be a little bit difficult but Usually. I was just getting my run in at some point in the day. but that would vary.

Speaker: Be very variable throughout the weeks. Yeah, that makes sense. I think. Yeah, I'm trying to. be consistent in in training and and trying to keep like okay a good rhythm is so important even when life gets so chaotic.

Speaker: And yeah like. predictable You're like, okay, well. Like... I don't know about you, but I feel it when like I'm going to run in. Bye -bye. Something's wrong.

Speaker: I need to go touch grass. I need to go outside. No, I think it's a good break. I think yeah you have to be a little bit. flexible. At least that's what I've learned.

Speaker: Like sometimes I'm running at 530 in the morning, sometimes I'm running at 7pm at night, or sometimes at 1pm in the afternoon. So it's like, really all over the place. But I do try and get it in each day.

Speaker: and so it's kind of just like take do you ever plan Do you ever plan ahead for those windows, or are you kind of just like, oh, I have some time now, so I'm going to go with... whatever amount of time I have in between activities I consider myself a 24 to 48 hour planner.

Speaker: So usually I have an idea of when I'm gonna do something the next day but I won't plan it out like in the week. If that makes sense. So yeah. I identify strongly with that. Yeah.

Speaker: Honestly. Yeah, and that goes for like everything. Like life school. 24 to 48 hours. That's really good. Yeah. so i need to start I need to start doing that because...

Speaker: Like. Wouldn't work It's crazy. Like, I usually start off my week and I'm like... This is the plan. It's going to go amazing. And then by Wednesday, there's usually like five wrenches that are thrown in there.

Speaker: And then I'm like. OK. And then I became a 24 to 48 hour planner. Like it it forces me to instead of just like right off the bat. Being like... So that's really good advice.

Speaker: Like, hey, maybe. Just see what you got going on tomorrow and then the next day. Yeah. colin and i have breakfast one we're like what are you like goals or aspirations for the day. And a lot of times it's. Study. Run.

Speaker: Uh. I coach swimming too, so sometimes coach and take Frazier on a walk. I don't know the the order of those things. but Yeah, we we call them our aspirations for the day.

Speaker: Oh, God.

Speaker: That's amazing. i like Maybe I'll start doing that to myself. Like, all right, what are your aspirations today? What are we going to get done? We just based on each other. Oh perfect, okay.

Speaker: Except you're like... an hour ahead. I'm not. I mean it's not that bad. I'll just wake up. How about, how about... Well, um we can coordinate. okay You can do them at night. What are your aspirations for tomorrow? There we go. yeah It is difficult. The next before is hard because I'm like, I don't know. I don't even want to think about tomorrow. And whatever I'm feeling about tomorrow right now, I might wake up and feel completely different about. so Which is also fair.

Speaker: Yeah. That's why they're aspirations. Mm hmm. Hmm? Exactly. Not often. I love that. mic to do

Speaker: See, there you go. That's what you just need to focus on. Hey. what would you What would you like to get done? Not what's going to get done. Because sometimes it doesn't get done. It's okay. Yeah.

Speaker: No, there's a lot of times. said. i mean like you said things get wrenches thrown in them and then you just have to like reevaluate So it's like, okay. Even if I don't get this done, that's okay. Mm hmm. move on and keep going even though I wanted to. And then.

Speaker: Sometimes it's like, oh, I. I had an aspiration to go on an eight mile run and it's actually going to be only four, but you know what? We're going to get it in and that's going to be it. Absolutely. Yeah, I think that that's like the biggest thing too is just being flexible, like you said. and But is it? Was it med school that kind of taught you?

Speaker: Or forced you maybe to... be more flexible or have you kind of always had that mindset? With sports. and getting training done. I think.

Speaker: Kind of a combination of both. I think I've always been. pretty Flexible ah type B 48 -hour planner. but i think honestly since i worked i worked in research before and i worked with bacteria uh and they grow on crazy schedules. So I was like, okay. uh i'm not on my own schedule i'm actually on a e coli schedule right now Oh.

Speaker: I'm gonna... plate these out and then i'm gonna wait 24 hours before i can do anything so i'm like Yeah, so once I learned that and I was not on my own schedule and I had to be flexible even more so I think that's when it really. ah polished itself.

Speaker: And that's good. But yeah. kind of just trickled over again I'm not really on my own schedule i'm on their schedule. so

Speaker: Oh, that's wild. I feel like you always have such a positive mindset for like everything in life. like just like throwing back to the experience that we had like going into that really tough swim um at worlds the pig swim and like you had broken a paddle earlier in the race and you were just like so you were oh my gosh that's right let's That's so good.

Speaker: and badass you are. Anna, that like you're just like leading these things. Still, like, no paddle. But don't you just like don't you like swimming? Kind of. on Without the paddle, though.

Speaker: Like you like. Do you prefer paddles or no paddle? and i Okay. that's That's her secret, folks. That's it. That's why she survived Worlds. It's good, though, because if you lose, but I mean, who else ah was it?

Speaker: who was the palo two years ago in the water. Marcus, okay. I think so, unlike the first swim. Yeah. so yeah it can happen and if you don't have it then it's like All right.

Speaker: Just gotta to keep going. Yeah. Yeah, mine was crazy, though. i like Touched a rock. after the first swim. It just shattered. I don't think. What?

Speaker: Into three pieces. Yeah, that was weird, though. I've never had that happen. And you like tried to use that paddle. for a few more swims, like just fragments of it, remember? ah well it was like broken into three sections so it was like what like yeah kind of like a circle and like the very top part had the Like.

Speaker: finger hold that I usually swim with. And so I was like, well, I Maybe it'll just be a finger paddle. And it didn't work. It didn't work. I think I had to like roll over and like tuck it into my wetsuit pretty early on. But I did try. then.

Speaker: Yeah, that. got rejected pretty quickly. Oh. So how do you... like How do you maintain that positive mindset through adversity? Like. where What thoughts are you having?

Speaker: Like... What? positive self -talk is going on or like yeah what isn't what's going on in your brain I feel like... Overall, I think I've just generally had.

Speaker: been a very optimistic, positive person. But I think I... tend to focus on like the little things. like Like, ah. yeah I broke one paddle, but I guess I have one more. Like I have still one that I can use. So, you know, just focus on that one. i get to switch both hands and try out a new stroke kind of thing. um Or...

Speaker: yeah i think it's just like yeah very much focused on like the little things of every single day of like Yeah. waking up and... I have a thing of like five more minutes in bed. Which is like...

Speaker: one of my favorite parts of my day is just laying in bed for five more minutes and it's like a little thing and then Yeah, I like I don't know, my cup of tea and like sitting outside for like. a couple minutes and just like I think focusing on like the little things that are positive.

Speaker: end up building up to the big ones and then when you in are in hard situations you have a better easier time identifying the little things that are going well. um I also think I tend to be more of like a problem solver person.

Speaker: of like yeah this happened. All right, what are we going to do about it? Versus like. really harping on like the negative of like this happened.

Speaker: I think I read something one time. It was like. If you get stressed out about something, you're like kind of putting yourself through it twice. So like, why? like reshift your mind of like, this is gonna happen. How can I prepare myself for that? and like alleviate some of like my stress. Stress is good.

Speaker: to some degree but like Yeah. trying to I'm going to focus on the little things. end.

Speaker: Yeah. just be a problem solver. And set up. Like, ah, this sucks and I can't do anything about it. I agree. I think we're all, we're both. Oh.

Speaker: All three of us are like that, too. It's like, all right. We can stay here. Feel your feels. A bit frustrated, but, like. There's always some some way to build a bridge and and move over and get to the next thing and yeah um i think You don't need to continue. continuously feel those feels like those you're feeling yeah solid and like feel them for sure but like don't keep putting yourself through it.

Speaker: 100%. Yeah, I was listening to something. I don't listen to a lot of podcasts, but actually one of them is like Hidden Brain. And he was telling, he was like saying something about like building like your.

Speaker: mental framework and mental map and they were like sometimes people like one bad thing will happen at work. Anon. They like tell someone else and then. they tell someone else later in the day and then they tell someone else later in the day and then they get home and they like tell their partner or their friend or their roommate And they were like.

Speaker: so that one like Two minute thing. Now you've told it to like six different people. And you'd like put yourself through it six more times. So like, yeah. little flip in your day just became a huge portion of your day.

Speaker: Instead of like oh this happened That sucks. I felt my feelings. Just kind of. Now what am I going to do? to move on and not have it become such a huge . part of your day.

Speaker: So I really took that one. I like that. I love that. That's such a great advice, though. I'm actually going to start following that podcast because I'm always looking for like. more things like that.

Speaker: um He did some really interesting ones. like Yeah, I was just looking through that, and i'm I'm excited because we're painting our house, and I have a lot of time to listen to pop music right now. so Um. That's amazing. I just like, I love learning things about our brain too. And like how they respond to certain. stimuli like

Speaker: oh yeah're saying like you're putting yourself through it six different times and like really it was just like one moment that could have happened you could have acknowledged it and then like focused on positive things and like how that can change your brain chemistry over time.

Speaker: like either positively or negatively depending on how you choose to react to it. Yeah. Absolutely. Alright. 100 % get behind that because it's yeah Again, focus on...

Speaker: literally stressing yourself out or just being upset. And have that be like your entire day or your entire race. Like, you could have easily been like, well... like I can't, I can't swim. Like this is like.

Speaker: But instead it was just, hey, you know what? We're gonna get in the swim. There's a lot of waves, but it's going to get done. yeah And we're going to make it to the other side. and I mean you guys have a great story to tell.

Speaker: because of it like that race I know like that year the archipelago was not kind and it was like I'm gonna give you guys a fight yeah And you pray at the start line of Worlds.

Speaker: Please be nice, Archipelago. Please be nice. like and You do whatever seance you need to. And sometimes it's just like, yeah, screw you. waves.

Speaker: Or whether. It's fun to look at things as like. a learning opportunity too. ah yeah As someone, I love school, and clearly. And just like learning in general, but it was like, all right.

Speaker: This happened. Like, what am I gonna... do and learn from it like how am i gonna And it doesn't even have any, like... for me, like breaking my paddle leg. that was just like a pretty good situation. like not going to learn not how to not do that, but I was like, I'm going to learn that we can get through this like crazy swim and do hard things. um even with one paddle and Sarah flying off a wave behind me and pulling me back.

Speaker: But we can do it. And that's a good learning opportunity. Yeah. It does make a good story tip. Really good story. yeah And you have that mindset, like... in life as well as in sports too right Mm hmm.

Speaker: That's really good. Do you think that started? like at a young age, just like in your life and something that you carried into sports throughout life? Or do you think that was something that maybe sports taught you?

Speaker: I feel like it's probably something that like sports taught me. I think. one of the things that Really stands out. coach, actually, like with my old high school coach like with my old club team which is like super fun and for my old high school team too, which is crazy.

Speaker: Um. But one of the things that he always like really says is he's like. every swim is like an opportunity. and so Yeah, sometimes kids are like. like i don't want to swim this and he was like Or like, I'm not feeling it. like I don't think I'm going to do very well, blah, blah, blah. And he was like,

Speaker: it's still an opportunity to swim. and to like to learn, to like do something. it's like even if you don't feel like you're gonna do it. or do well. like getting in, trying. and giving yourself that opportunity to do it.

Speaker: You're going to learn something from it. maybe it'll go better than you expect. um Maybe you'll be like, oh, actually. This is not how I want to prepare for my races next time. So. Yeah. Once I have like...

Speaker: If you had asked me that question a long time ago, I think I would have said something different. But now that I've been coaching with him and I like. remember all of those things that he used to tell us. I think it's definitely. stemming from like sports. and his coaching of like you have an opportunity every single time you get in the water to Work on your stroke to try something new to race differently like Just off really approaching every single situation as an opportunity.

Speaker: for yourself. to do something, learn something and try something. I love that That's so cool. I'm going to take that too. because im the same same way of like eight.

Speaker: Like everything, everything. It might be a really bad situation, but you're still going to learn something from it. so having like reframing it to be like no you have an opportunity to do something no matter what it is whether you already know what's gonna happen or it's gonna be a surprise.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I think that's just a good way to look at training, though, as well, especially when life throws wrenches at us and we're like not feeling so sure about this race that's coming up or this. you know big workout that we have like it's still an opportunity to like go in there and give yourself the opportunity to learn from it and somehow like I yeah I really love that mindset a lot And everything's an opportunity.

Speaker: Yeah, I think that's really cool that... that was something that was like kind of implanted and ingrained in you at like such a young age Because something that I've always noticed about you, Anna, like just hanging out, racing with you, is that like you always are so happy and like positive about any situation that could arise. POSTHOLING.

Speaker: Through the snow. My shins just like absolutely. getting ley of like crazy She'd post all and then it'd just be like blood, but snow.

Speaker: that was crazy but it's like anna oh yeah she's still having a good time She's still smiling, she's still good. who yeah Mentally fighting a couple of demons, but I was like, alright, one more step.

Speaker: That's the only way we're getting down is if we actually do this. So gotta keep going. Can't stay on the mountain. I'm glad we turned around because. There was way more like after talking to other folks who had been up there like the week afterwards.

Speaker: there was a lot more snow further along. before getting to the road where we're we gonna then run down so it was Oh umm that's good. turned around. Bye. That's another little key there. Know when to... Know your limits.

Speaker: In the elements. smart decisions That was a smart decision. oh my gosh it's incredible oh yeah i i forgot you guys did that that was funny And then Kate was there too.

Speaker: Yeah. That was so fun. so With all of the swim runs and just accomplishments that you've had, what is it what has it meant? Um,

Speaker: kind of just continuing to be able to do the sport that you love. And also like make an impact on. the sport as a woman.

Speaker: I might need a repeat. wait Okay. But... So let's reframe because I had the question. but I always do this too. There's like one question where I ask and it's like, hang on, what did you just say? And I'm like, it sounded so much better in my head.

Speaker: um the way Finding the words to actually say it is more difficult. um I guess it was a two -parter. But. So you... In the short amount of time that you've been racing, like you are.

Speaker: um extremely accomplished. Like, I mean, ah We had no idea that we were third, and that was just incredible. What does it mean to be? in the sport to see it grow.

Speaker: as a woman

Speaker: I think it's honestly. Age is really inspiring. um just to see more females like getting into it. I think. I feel like we kind of live in like a funky.

Speaker: generation of like what was it like a 1980 is like when the first female like ran the Boston Marathon or something like that so i yeah I think, yeah, I think it was pretty late. Maybe, yeah, right around then or something. At least like. just at 50 years ago.

Speaker: Yeah, something like that. So I feel like it's like. an interesting time of like our generation growing. Enter. being in competitive distance sports and like this year it was like the first woman to walk. when the Cocodona like 200. 250 miler, right?

Speaker: Rachel, like yeah. yeah like so things like that i think are just really cool to see like women in. long endurance sports and really inspiring and I think being in swimrun and watching.

Speaker: um people grow and being able to race competitively. Hey. Adios. wild to me I'm like I can't believe it we came in third i'm like that's crazy that's insane Yeah.

Speaker: But I think it's been really... cool to see it grow as like a ah competitive field. and like I know like watching like. of her mamas and things like that. I'm like, wow, like.

Speaker: It's so cool to like see you guys come into this. See you. Like little snippets of like. your outside life as well like being like a strong woman just in society too and then being like wow you can do this in addition And just.

Speaker: yeah seeing women wear so many different hats and like push their bodies to extremes that we just haven't seen before and just being able to take part in that is just a special opportunity and really cool. And I hope more more women continue to do so.

Speaker: I love that so much. and Some part of that conversation just brought back like ah a little glimpse of ah something that I overheard. It was either at the gym or after run club or something like that last week where We they were talking about like Somebody... was um postpartum And talking about how postpartum women are turning into like...

Speaker: super endurance athletes. And I mean, it is true. We are seeing that out on like the ultra in the ultra fields as well, like women that are just like.

Speaker: running ultras and like pumping at aid stations and like Winning races like truly becoming superheroes and it is so cool and inspiring to see. And I just I love being here for it and part of it.

Speaker: Thank you. and watching it grow. Yeah, I feel really fortunate also to be like. kind of on like the younger side of that too. Mm -hmm. Like. eventually maybe wants a family and things like that to like See you. all of those like women doing that in addition to being.

Speaker: Bye. a mom and a working mom and all of those kind of things i think it's like just really inspiring to be. on the other side or on the earlier side of like, wow, like.

Speaker: That is possible. um Yeah, like the mom who is an yeah ah ER doctor and training for ultramarathons and winning them and like has three kids at home. and it' like Insane. It's so, so, so inspiring.

Speaker: Yeah. It's insane, but it's also like. It's cool that it's becoming like less insane or crazy at the same time yeah it's not like a single story like i think uh Who was it? It was on the Artemis mission.

Speaker: A couple of them are like. I don't want to be the story. I want to like. i I don't want to be the only one. like the first like female to go or the first black male to go like they were like i don't want to be the only one i just want it to be the story i just want to be one uh And when they.

Speaker: I like listen to them talk all about their mission. and things like that yeah this from i thought it was really cool to like see that and i feel like For women in sports, that's kind of how it is. it's like not out of the ordinary for.

Speaker: someone pregnant to be doing a swim run. um and like training and doing all like. Yeah. things that ah feel crazy to me, but it's just like. No, that is possible. Like, you can do that.

Speaker: Um, you could wear many different hats. and It's amazing to have role models like that now. Yeah. I know. Well, I mean, we had Bronwyn literally do her Casco the Fog here. um while she was pregnant with her twins.

Speaker: And then right now we have Sabina. Well, she, I think has stopped swim running, but she was in Angadine, I think. six weeks yeah she's the Yeah, I know. I think she stopped. I think her last race was like at 32 weeks, which I'm like.

Speaker: crazy, but I was just It's... It's cool to see it again, not just be a story or not just one person. because it is possible and it's also healthy to work out when you're pregnant too so it's even though your body is changing and so many things like i mean we've also talked to like women going through like menopause and stuff like that too like even though your body's changing no matter what stage you are at life like you're still able to push it to

Speaker: run a 50k to do ultra stuff like women were built We're built to last. um And, like... I don't... I'm always like the person who like bashes the men on this podcast, I feel like. um I love our men. but like I think...

Speaker: Kelly said it really well last time on our podcast. like We do need each other. because Because the men are breaking the records. like They're just as much pushing us as as much as other women are pushing us as well.

Speaker: like seeing um like Backyard Ultra stuff like there's a couple women like breaking records but It's only because they're like... No, I literally like. I'm just chasing. the guy in front of me and they're pushing me just as much. so it's really really cool to see both sides be like all right let's build each other up instead of like Yeah, and you can't do it. and Of course, there's still that out there. um But I think it's... were

Speaker: Like you said, we're on the younger side of it, seeing that it is possible. It's not impossible anymore. Mm hmm. I also think there's a big shift in things like...

Speaker: what women were told like we could do or we should do. 30 years ago like this like there is a big like cultural shift with things. Whereas like... Personally, in my life, I'm seeing like a lot more support from men around me.

Speaker: um to... push myself and just like be my best self like genuinely and supporting all of like the physical and members that I have as well. um Yeah.

Speaker: i think we're better together. Oh yeah. Yeah. so So is Colin, your boyfriend, going to be doing this for men? Anytime soon. Absolutely not.

Speaker: Oh, okay. Can we get him on a trail race maybe?

Speaker: He ran that. He ran the foldulder Boulder Boulder. That's right. um earlier this year that was the furthest that he's ever run so we trained for that um Yeah, he he plays a lot of basketball. He played basketball in college, and so he still plays basketball. That's there.

Speaker: that kind of movement lifting all right hey you know i can't play basketball so that's props to colin for playing basketball because somebody's got to do it Yeah. Yeah, no, we We move our bodies in different ways, which is also good. um But.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I don't know if he would do a trail race. He would do the bodybuilder again though. you did say that okay there we go that's incredible that's huge like okay 10k but it's also like If you've not ever done the Boulder Boulder and you are listening to this, you need to sign up. It's a Colorado Staple Race. Like, I grew up doing it.

Speaker: But... We have so many international people too. We have people that fly in and do it. So if you're able to get... and payy Largest 10K in the world. Really? yeah that's what they said when we did it this year which was also funny here was his first year running it and he like told his co -worker he was like yeah i'm running like a a boulder boulder and they're like oh how many people do it and he was like ah i don't know a couple thousand and then like where we get there and it's like ah the largest 10K in the world, like 54 ,000 people are running it.

Speaker: Just a few thousand. Yep. He was like, oh, so actually. Huge. That's incredible. i just it's It is like literally a party from the start to the finish because you run through so many neighborhoods.

Speaker: And you get so many treats too. Like there's like jello shots. There's also like candy, popsicles. It just depends on what people are handing out. Doritos. like Yeah, I think my friend, he ate a Twinkie. He ate a Snoke.

Speaker: um an ice cream cone. They did drink a beer. They had a piece of bacon. I love it Yeah. You can really eat your way through Boulder. But also people like race race it too, which is cool. Yes. Yeah.

Speaker: I think. Yeah, Connor Mance has won it. He's like... um Olympian and all that. jazz and runs really fast marathons. He's like, yeah. just run a race at elevation and crush it. Okay.

Speaker: That was a cool one. Oh. That's amazing. All right, I got one more question for you. You ready? I'm ready What advice do you have for anybody wanting to try something new?

Speaker: It's... Go for it. um Yeah. new swim run or just new in general? Because that's really just my advice in general. If you want to try something, I say just go for it. just like Go out and do it. Give it your all.

Speaker: See it as a learning opportunity. Maybe you like it, maybe you don't. But you never know until you try something. Just like when you're a little kid and you like don't want to eat something on your plate and then you learn that you're like, wow. That was actually. really good.

Speaker: You don't learn. You don't know until you try. That's actually funny because my sister, like, little bag um I digress, but that's really sound advice. But Izzy literally when she was younger, like, heated sushi hated Hey, did that nudge? Girl is a sushi snob. She's like, I won't eat that.

Speaker: What?

Speaker: That's incredible. Yeah. Also, like find someone that also like wants to do it. I think sometimes that can be helpful. um or someone already in the whatever you're trying to do. um i think like when i ran my first marathon like my roommate being like let's just Let's just do it. And I was like. yeah Let's just do it.

Speaker: um Yeah. So I feel like I've fallen into that. it's definitely just my like personal personality you just like kind of send it but Just say yes. Yeah. Be smart.

Speaker: Don't put yourself in the sticky situation saying yes. but ah But yeah. no i would say just find the courage and just go for it. Worst thing is it's not going to work and that's fine.

Speaker: That's okay. evaluate and keep going I love that that's great advice that's perfect for anybody trying anything new. Yeah. It's, it's always going to be like, no thanks. I don't, I don't like the look of that.

Speaker: It's like the food. It smells weird. It's a different color.

Speaker: I love that. well Anna? I... I love racing with you. I know Sarah did too. That's why she like. suggested we race together and I...

Speaker: literally it so much fun. um I like... Bye. posted an Instagram but I was just like looking through everything and I was like that day was it was incredible it was so fun I mean we had perfect weather um besides the currents we could do without those um But you are a beast of an athlete.

Speaker: and just very lucky to to call you a friend. um just meeting at a swim run and then continuing this. ah like friendship. And so it's, I mean, thank you, Simran. It's been fun. It's a great community.

Speaker: yeah no i'm very grateful for you guys thanks for all the fun swim runs, also just memories in general. You're like... ah yeah it's been a really good community and i've really enjoyed getting to know you guys And learning from you.

Speaker: I'm getting to call you a friend, so. Ditto. And I'm excited for so much more. I know. The best is yet to come. We're just getting started. Oh yeah.

Speaker: Literally. Well, thank you all for listening. Until next time. Bye. Bye.
