Speaker: You're listening to the Sleepy Games Podcast.

Speaker: And we're back for another episode of the Sleepy Games Podcast. Finally, after it feels like a long hiatus. What is going on Sleepy John? It does.

Speaker: It feels like an eternity has passed since I last heard your soothing voice.

Speaker: Right back at you, man. You always know how to make me smile and giddy. But yeah, so we are a little bit late to talk about post-Oscar show. kind kind of go into like the top films of the year and everything and go over some of the award winners talk about the host since conan hosted again and how he did all that but before we get into that segment of the show we always like to go into um recommendations or things we just saw uh this recently that we uh recommend or

Speaker: or things you might want to stay away from, or just everywhere in between. um So I wanted you to start off on it, because I think you said you had a few things that you watched that you want to talk about.

Speaker: So take it away, Sully Bajor. Yeah, I guess is two two in the action category. okay guess I guess I'll start off with the one that was a more underwhelming, ah yeah and that was the the new Netflix movie, War Machine.

Speaker: Okay, okay. yeah not to be confused by this one yeah not Not to be confused with like the Marvel, ah you know, the comic book movies, War Machine. This is just War Machine never got his own movie anyway, so I don't think... I know, but somebody might think that maybe that's what happened. I don't know, right? so There's also a good gen song by ACDC called War Machine that I like.

Speaker: I don't know if I know that one. I got to listen to that after the show. Yeah, I think it was like a newer one. Check that out. I love ACDC. Oh, also, before you get into it, so War Machine stars aot or Adam Richman. Adam or Alan?

Speaker: What? It's Alan. actor is it is Isn't it like Rich Sin? Is it Rich Sin? Alan Rich Sin. Okay. Is that what it is? So, I don't know if you saw, but he's been in the news lately. Uh, oh yeah, so I don't even know how I know this. Yeah, apparently there was some sort of like a dispute with his neighbors or something like that. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I don't like, I and don't even know. James, I am practically never online. How do I this crap? And you know about it. That's how crazy it is. I don't know You know about it. That's just it. If I know about it, I guess, uh,

Speaker: Yeah. So can't say no much. From what I heard, think it's being blown out of proportion. And it sounds like he actually isn't the bad guy in this scenario. Or am I mistaken? He's not. So thankfully, he had body cam footage when he was riding his bike. So initially, the video that came out, showed him beating up the neighbor. Because was only from the neighbor's...

Speaker: video so of course the the neighbor probably cut it in a way where like nothing else was shown only like the bad parts right or everything that i would be in the neighbor's favor as far as like of course you know this is America so it's all about people suing each other um and and and and just getting free money um so luckily he or luckily Alan had his body cam footage on his chest and he was showing how Ooh, the neighbor was, he instigated the whole thing. he was coming at him, um you know, and, and,

Speaker: And Alan's like, you know, protecting his kids and everything. And he's just, he's looking out for them. And especially, i don't know why, like, you would get right in front of a moving motorcycle to try and stop somebody. Like, that's dangerous. One, first of all, he could easily run you over, not be able to stop. And two, having to abruptly stop like that to try and prevent yourself from hitting someone, that could get yourself hurt.

Speaker: like but i like Like for Alan. So of course he's pissed off. was like, what the hell are you doing? So of course it was coming at him. He's pissed off. you know He could have got hurt all that. And yeah, i'm i'm I'm just so glad because, you know, because if he didn't have that footage, who knows what what could have happened?

Speaker: Like he he just would have had whatever the neighbor had. And, you know, mean, I mean, like me I guess his kids could could fall witness, but i don't know. Like if a jury would. would would would you would believe the kids that are just looking out for their father.

Speaker: But I'm i'm just glad because because he hes he's on such a great upswing in his career as far as, you know, starring in things. He's in the Reacher show.

Speaker: That's still doing great numbers and all that. So that that would have sucked if he got canceled because of that, because of a stupid f freaking neighbor like that. He's probably like the head of the HOA or something or on the board.

Speaker: he's like he's you know He's like the male Karen or something. Yeah. yeah I don't know. It's the world we live in, I guess. I know. I know. It's annoying. But anyway, I just want to get that off my chest. But anyway, War Machine, let's go. That's what we do here. War Machine. That's what I miss with you. I miss going on on tangents with you.

Speaker: Yes. Yes, I do. I do. I do. Exactly. Exactly. See, we we never even need content to talk about because we tend to over talk with our tangents. thankss yeah But anyways. Yeah, so I didn't get a chance to see it.

Speaker: You did, so I'd like to hear your thoughts. Okay, I mean, in general, uh... Okay, I didn't know anything about this movie, like, whatsoever.

Speaker: Uh, I knew... Like, I haven't seen Reacher either, but I am familiar with the Alan Richardson that he's doing that, I guess. I don't know that I've actually seen him in anything yet, so... Oh, okay.

Speaker: Yeah, I will say, i don't think, like, there's there's nothing nothing wrong with his role in this.

Speaker: I guess I can't say I was ah necessarily expecting a lot. I didn't really know what it was about. I guess there'll be some spoilers here if you know nothing about it. Basically he's fighting some sort of, I guess, a machine or or some sort of a, like I guess a tank, I guess, or like a flying tank, you call it from ah a different planet.

Speaker: That's basically the gist of the movie. ah It has its moments that I enjoyed. It just... it it just i Feel like the this movie's trying to set up for the sequel which I imagine might be more interesting if they're doing one But that that was kind of the impression that was given ah Watching it.

Speaker: I just I don't know. I wouldn't say the action was necessarily bad. It was it was very It's just very meh like I don't know like it was a been there done that very forgettable. Yeah, like I can't say like The the characters none of the characters are very ah They're not memorable, like, really to me at all anyways. like maybe Maybe somebody would watch it and be like, oh, they were, but I didn't really find the characters were memorable.

Speaker: ah There's a lot, there's a huge part of the movie is him training at Ranger camp, basically. um Which was kind of neat, but at the same time, it's like, it just, I don't, like, I didn't really understand that the whole setup for that. It was almost like they didn't have enough movie or plot to make a full movie so there's a goal we'll just train him for half of it even though he was already a soldier anyways and and nothing that he learned in Ranger training had anything to do

Speaker: with the rest of the movie. Wow, yeah. You know you would think there'd be some things he learned training and then later he'll come back in the movie. No, he's basically, he's like this super soldier almost. He's decimating all the records, all the other guys there already, because already a soldier.

Speaker: yeah he's doing really like He's already seen combat and stuff, whereas a lot of these guys are like just these green green guys. And I think that was the point, is they're trying to introduce these characters, but then it,

Speaker: it It doesn't really seem to matter as the movie goes on like I guess and in my mind anyways But like it wasn't bad like I would say it was like it was it was entertaining enough like if you just want to turn off your brain watch kind of a Just you know, just some some some good. I guess military style action. i guess yeah it wasn't terrible. It has moments It's got the hurrah in there a little bit that the military Tends tends to do you know to to get you kind of psyched about military goodness, I guess.

Speaker: and ah But otherwise, it was a bit lacking. The way that he takes down the machine, i guess it's just interesting in that ah it it would leave itself open to such a a very apparent and kind of dumb weakness. I'm not gonna ruin it. I mean, you just watch it if you want to watch it. Kind of like that Death Star where it's just like, oh, here, we we built in this intentional thing that'll just blow this shit up.

Speaker: ah value is But that was a War Machine. ah like probably Probably safe to pass it, I guess.

Speaker: In my eyes. I feel like, like i said, if they end up making a sequel... Maybe? And then maybe this one, like, it'll redeem itself if the sequel is really good, if that's what they're trying to build up to. But then I kind of get annoyed. I'm just like, you could have just made... If they cut back the training montage...

Speaker: They could have just put whatever the sequel that they're planning to do, unless they're not doing it, but it looks like that that's what they were going to do. ah if they did They could have just made a full movie there. i think that would have been cooler than what they ended up doing, but that's just me.

Speaker: So, the second movie I guess I've watched more recently that I thought actually was pretty good... Again, I'm not going to say it's like, you know, where we're we're doing the Oscars this episode. don't think it's going to be winning any any Oscars or anything like that.

Speaker: ah But it was the the movie called The Rip. Have you heard of this one? No, I did watch this one. You watched it? Okay, well, this will make it more interesting if you've seen it.

Speaker: What did you think of it then? ah I enjoyed it. um I guess I'm more of a sucker for matt Damon and Ben Affleck together. Right, yep.

Speaker: Like, uh, and it can't, like, I knew as far as like, you know, as far as being things being predictable in the movie, um, I feel like they kind of, uh, uh, they kind of telegraphed certain things. i was like, oh, well, this is like, this is going to come back where, you know, like where they're, they're kind of just like playing this that to,

Speaker: Or they're acting like they're arguing or they're they're they're other butting heads, but really they're just trying to they're trying to get the other guy who's really the um The what the that the one guy who is I guess I guess a double agent or whatever who he know that he was a dirty cop and everything so Yeah, I mean, other than that, like where things can be little predictable, i'm it's still fun just to be on the journey.

Speaker: yeah i mean, yeah, yeah yeah have and and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are so good together. but They've always had great chemistry. um And yeah, it was a fun little movie.

Speaker: Uh, but, but yeah, I wouldn't, I wouldn't say like, you know, it's the best. It's going be like, it's going to be like top 10 of the year or anything, but yeah, there' somebody just want to put on past the time, you know, um, some, some, some really good action scenes and yeah, I'll keep you on the edge to the end. And you want to, you, you, you want them to, uh, to, uh, to take down the bad guys in a, in a glorious way, I guess glorious and, uh,

Speaker: or Yeah, I'll say a glorious way. and I think it does. Yeah. So, yeah. so I'm guessing you enjoyed it too since since it wasn't... I guess you had it a little bit but above War Machine.

Speaker: ah Yeah, like, you pretty much hit the nail on the head in terms of how I felt about it. So that that's pretty much it. Like, yeah, it's a good, kind of more old school type action movie.

Speaker: enjoyable I guess if you've you've liked any of the movies like the action movies with ah those guys in it ah you know kind of has like the tone of like the town or something like that kind of so yes i don't know like i said I enjoyed it it was uh yeah like that that's pretty much that's pretty much where I would put it

Speaker: Yeah, but I hope there's more movies with Ben Affleck and ah Matt Damon on the horizon. I feel like they'll always be making movies together until they're in wheelchairs. and they're They're besties, you know?

Speaker: They are. We'd love to see that. It's not going to stop. But yeah, there's not much to say. It's like, you know, simple premise. um You know, you have good actors in there. And it's a...

Speaker: It's a you know ah fun cop against criminals and find out who the dirty cops are and take them down. There you go. One thing story one thing I will say, there was a... I feel like there was a... there was if Somebody had been working on their abdominals, their come-getters, so to speak, so much that they they found...

Speaker: a reason to take off their shirt, which I really don't feel like warranted it at all. But like, obviously i think one of the actors was like, no, I did all these ab crunches. I'm showing off ab. Was that Matt Damon? that Matt Damon doing that?

Speaker: Or Ben Affleck? No, i think that that was Ben Affleck. It was an yeah like in the bathroom at the at the start of the yeah the movie. And it was like, he takes off his shirt for like five seconds and puts it back on. Like, I was like,

Speaker: i I don't like... if you You look good for your age, man. Like, i'm not going to deny it. I was like, you could have found different way to show it off. That's great. ah ah I don't like... But I was like, okay. a Like, sure. The women... The ladies need something, I suppose, too, for a movie like that.

Speaker: Yes. little bit of fan service. So they say. So... yeah Anyways, that's ah that's pretty much all I got. Can I go into mine? I'm excited about mine.

Speaker: ah yeah Well, if you're excited, yeah. well I'm excited. You say no so So, I was saying how this one will kind of like go into our oster Oscar discussion. Right.

Speaker: Because I think this movie will be nominated from Oscar time. Oh. So, ah this past week I saw Project Hail Mary.

Speaker: in theaters. Okay. Do you know what this is? I do not. You have not seen any marketing for this movie? I can't say that I have, no.

Speaker: Wow. Apparently, Alan Richardson's drama takes precedent over somebody's multi-million dollar marketing strategy. I'm very surprised because it stars ah ah a stars a good Canadian kid.

Speaker: Okay. By name of Ryan Gosling.

Speaker: Okay. i Yeah, I feel like I should know. You probably even know he was Canadian, did you? No, I knew that. I knew that. Okay, good. I tend to know the Canadian actors. Oh, so you better take pride in the Canadian actors. Take pride in them.

Speaker: I guess. Anyway. they so They typically don't stay here. Yeah. they but They represent their country. you know I guess. Canada's great. I don't live there, but it's great. yeah um so so he So he stars in this book adaptation to film.

Speaker: um yeah This is the same writer, same author who did The Martian. Speaking of me okay with Matt Dean. um so so So there's like some similarities with it, but not many.

Speaker: um But, you know, basically either is he's in space. He's alone. of like how Matt Dean was alone on Mars. But the big difference with this one is he... Ryan Gosling befriends an alien.

Speaker: And the alien in him are trying are trying to... um ah they're they're they're going to the sun to try and get like these ah elements, these these materials like to kind of help protect and save planet Earth.

Speaker: um Because the Earth is gonna die or or lose all their resources soon because um with the sun, how it currently is, the temperature would fall a certain number of degrees, which would make the Earth like uninhabitable for for the population.

Speaker: Right. um And then it would just be like a re a resource war. People just killing each other over it. You know, stuff like that. So, pretty grim stuff on the surface.

Speaker: Yeah. But let me tell you... There were scenes in this film I was crying tears of laughter. I was laughing so hard because of the relationship between ah Ryan Gosling and this alien character that he calls Rocky. So so for the sake of me telling all this, you know we'll call him by his name, Rocky.

Speaker: So Ryan and Rocky, um they had this beautiful friendship of them trying to figure out together. And this alien, you know he's just a smart as as Ryan is. And cool as far as the story with him being on that ship in the first place. Because he he goes from literally being a like a middle school school teacher a middle school teacher to being this astronaut in space trying to save the planet.

Speaker: I liked how it was like this non-linear storytelling where right in beginning you're thrust into seeing him on the ship by himself and then it'll flash back to like him with the students and him with NASA and everyone telling him about the plan and what they need to do to save the planet and how many years they have now we've talked about this on the show before is that like to hide what is otherwise kind of boring plot or Or like ah like ah like ah like ah a thin plot?

Speaker: What? so some Some movies do that. They'll do this this this timeline jumping back and forth with flashbacks because the plot is quite thin. No, ah they they do it in a in a very... I guess they do it in a way where... yeah Like, sometimes i I'll be annoyed if the like you're in the present time on the ship of them you know trying to go to the sun to to get what they need to save the planet.

Speaker: And then like, you know, because they would do abrupt flashbacks. It's not like, oh, I don't want to see like what's going on the flashback. Like, give me back to the present. Like, this is annoying stuff. Like, it actually pertains to what's going on next. Oh, this is providing exposition is what you're saying. ah No, because you's cut it's kind of more more so like um establishing the characters more, I'd say.

Speaker: Because okay really Ryan Gosling, because when he's on the ship, he's the only human there. like So it's either it's either him talking to himself, talking to ah like the the video camera, or he's he's interacting with the alien.

Speaker: So you kinda it's kind of good how you have... some more of, you know, human interactions when you're doing these flashbacks. Especially when you have some complicated relationships with some of them. And you kind of, like, don't really know, like, a like if if these people are are doing, like, what's best or or or looking out for for Ryan Gosling characters, like, best interest. um But, like, the so this movie was two and a half hours long.

Speaker: and it flew by i mean if like i always said beginning maybe it takes a little bit to get there and i will say like the best part of the movie or or i mean when the movie starts being like the best can possibly be is when the inner when the alien is introduced and then the rest of the movie is just like amazing from from there on did So, yeah, so, I mean, so, like I said, I was i was laughing so so much with their interactions. And then I think because they hooked me with that, when it got to more of the dramatic scenes towards the end, I was tearing up, like, like i i was I was almost, like, bawling. Like, I was watching my girlfriend, too, and I could tell she's, like, looking at like, don't look at me. There's something in my eye, you know? Mm.

Speaker: this

Speaker: So I was gonna stop by that. And then, and and I will say like, there was one part of the movie where i was like feeling like, but I thought like it ended. I thought they like, it was almost like a Lord the Rings sort of thing. Like, was like, oh no, they like are they falling into too many and ending syndrome, you know?

Speaker: And- Ah, yes. So I thought it was doing that, and then when the ending, like the real ending happened, I'm like, okay, now I'm glad it ended the way it did. So like, you had me there, i was like, okay, this would have been nice, but this is nicer the way you finish it off.

Speaker: So it wass like and like, it made up for it. So i'm like so I thought I was going to be annoyed, but then I wasn't, and I was pleasantly surprised with how they actually really wrapped up the movie. Right. Right. So okay it is it is that my favorite movie so far of the year of 2026.

Speaker: I think this will be nominated for Best Picture of the Oscars next this next year. And I think Ryan Gosling will be nominated for Best Actor because he says tough is he shows so much range like with this role. and I love him already, you know, in so many other roles.

Speaker: Yeah. it's It's really tough when they do it at the start of the year though, because I feel like yeah it it it tends to hurt your chances. At the awards show. Not always. We're going to get into that shortly.

Speaker: Okay. some movie A movie that came out early last year was able to stand the test of time and still was in lot of people's minds. Should we just get into it now, then? Let's get into it. Let's go. Before we go, highly recommend Project Hail Mary. See it in theaters now.

Speaker: Sleepy John, I want you to see it. I'd love to know your thoughts. It's like a blend of... If I had to but put it together, it's like... It's like... Interstellar meets The Martian meets E.T.

Speaker: Okay, I mean, uh... Just for the record, i i did I know everyone loved the movie. I didn't really care much for The Martian for whatever reason. Oh, no interesting. yeah Yeah, I thought it was movie that just just, like, everybody liked.

Speaker: Maybe that was the problem, too. Maybe it was just, like, because so many people recommended it to me, I went watched it, and I was like, I wouldn't say I hated I just like, there's a lot of potatoes in the movie.

Speaker: Um, like I was like, okay. hate toes Yeah. i was like, I mean, I liked potatoes. I don't know if I liked them that much, but, uh, I mean, all right. Like I love potatoes.

Speaker: Sure. Um, um, no, I will know. It's funny. say Cause I'll be curious. Cause I mean, there'll probably be like some people who like, do like comparison videos of like, oh, which one's better, Project Hail Mary or The Martian?

Speaker: Now I will say like, Project Hail Mary was a lot funnier than I thought it was gonna be. And some people who saw it didn't like that. How it was. Some people thought it it was too funny.

Speaker: Like, they should took the, you know, they should have took the source material more seriously as far as like, hey, we're dealing with like the threat of losing planet Earth.

Speaker: Like, this this shouldn't be that funny, you know? But like for me, I feel like that goes into more of the optimism of the character of how you kind of need this to especially when you're alone on like you need like this fun you know like you need to be goofy sometimes and laugh at certain things to be able to accomplish your goal obviously if you're just like serious and moping the whole time like i got you what are what are you fighting for You gotta have that positivity, James. That's what life's all about. You gotta have that positivity. That can-do attitude. attitude.

Speaker: Okay. Back to what you were saying about a movie that was early in the year, and that's that's where we left off. And we went to another of our tangents. Yeah, because I think it was Sinners that came out last year around the same time Project Hail Mary did.

Speaker: And it it was able to stick with voters and everything like the whole time. Evidently. and and And lo and behold, we had the the Best Actor winner, Michael B. Jordan, at the Oscars.

Speaker: Right. I was so happy for the man. um And i now i I saw it coming. Not not if it wasn't for the SAG Awards or the Actor Awards. That was the award show like two weeks before. Yeah, I still would have thought Timothee Chalamet would have won for Gras Supreme. Hmm.

Speaker: But because he won the actor award, I'm like, oh, shit, he's going to win the Oscar. He's going to win. And then he did, especially because I think there was a lot of flack with Timothee Chalamet when he was like bashing ballet and um an opera ah performers or just shows and everything. i was like, oh, that's not a good look for him. because Yeah, you can watch what you say to these guys. Fuck. Yeah, it takes nothing.

Speaker: So, yeah, I know we're talking about the like of like the big award for for that. um And, yeah, so I do think, like, with movie like Project Hail Mary, I think that would be the same thing. I think it's going to stick with in the heads of people throughout the year. Because already know people that I've already seen, like, multiple times in the theater. And I just saw this weekend, it had, like, a very small drop in the box office. That means good word of mouth.

Speaker: Right. That's what it means, Libby John. That's what it means. But... Anyway, since we're into the Oscars now, did you watch the show? ah Okay, so I caught ah caught a bit of it. I think that there was ah some confusion on my part about when it started. So it was funny because and went to turn it on, and that was when Jimmy Kimmel took over.

Speaker: then I was like, I was confused because you told me that Conan was hosting it. was like, what hell is going on? So he was like presenting an award or something? was that what he was doing?

Speaker: Yeah, I think so. So I kind of had it running in the background. and I can't say I was watching intently as I intended to. Like i said, I went to go sit down and I was like, ah, crap, I think I missed like a good chunk of this. I was like, ah, I'll see if I can get some of it, I guess. And then I was i i was doing some other things. But i mean, i caught I caught some of it.

Speaker: So did did you watch the video I sent you? It was like the opener for Conan?

Speaker: James, I just forgot about that until just now. Oh my God. So um'll bring it yeah I'll break it down to it. It reminded me of something that like the mtv movie awards used to do like in like in the glory days the mtv movie awards when i was like right late ninety s early mid 2000s whatever where the hosts would like like where they would like do parodies of like inserting themselves in the movies like like i remember when i think it was with like i think like

Speaker: Justin Timberlake and Sean William Scott like hosted together before us something and they were like in like the Matrix and they were inserting themselves like in the roles ah in the actual scenes of the movie and like making fun of them and everything i got so that so that's what Conan did for his opening so did did you watch Weapons?

Speaker: Weapons? I never heard of this one okay So in the in Wep- in Wep- Wep- Wepons was like the the big horror movie last year. So Conan actually like dressed up as like the villain character, like the horror character from the movie. yeah And then, like so in the end of that movie, you have all these little kids chasing the villain.

Speaker: Because like there's something that happens the movie where like the the spell, whatever the witch does to people, this little kid actually got a hold of it and like reversed it on her. So all those kids that that that she had hypnotized whatever are now coming after her to kill her. So so when when when Conan opened up the show, It had all these kids chasing after him and he's going through each movie that was nominated for Best Picture and like going through a different scene and everything while these kids are chasing her. And while they yeah and they and they have the music of Beastie Boys ah sabotage going on the background, which makes it even better.

Speaker: ah ah So you can just imagine all this chaos happening with this music playing while he's running from these kids. And then, uh, so he, you know, he goes, he goes through like the sinners, he goes, and then I was dying when they actually like animated himself in K-pop Demon Hunters.

Speaker: And like, it was like the scene where, where like the girl, where like the roomie, the main girl was like looking at, looking at the guy, like being all love-shock and everything, it but instead she's looking at Conan.

Speaker: I was like, this is amazing. yeah So he went all out for this. I wish he watched it. It's so funny. How long is it? I should watch it right now. It's like four minutes long.

Speaker: Yeah. So like it' so so he's's like I think every nominated movie, like like he got at least all the ones that people definitely watched, or like at least the ones that were like,

Speaker: like multiple ah an award recognition and everything like he was going through and he was just he was doing like everyone i was just dying I mean a definitely helps watching all the movies and everything so you get like you get like the the like the subtleties and everything he's he's he's going into but uh yeah so off the bat he he knocked out the park with with that opening now i will say like the monologue he did was just it was okay like like it was pretty hit or miss um But, you know, ah i'm I'm just glad as far as like as as far as hosting goes. like

Speaker: he he has He's so high energy and like he knows how to riff and he knows how to play off people well. So I do hope he continues to host.

Speaker: he Because he can make such a bland show fun. he He is. he's he's He is quite talented at that, actually. so Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, because there's some hosts, I won't name names, but there's some hosts that I really don't enjoy watching whatsoever. So... Yeah. Like who?

Speaker: a Jimmy Kimmel? Like Jimmy Kimmel, yeah. I thought I was going name names. Yeah, ah yeah i Jimmy Kimmel should just stick with his show. I don't like with when when he hosts. like ah yes He does some good things with his show, but like yeah I don't like him as a host. He was good on when Ben Stein's money, and then ah I don't know. I don't think I've cared for him since then.

Speaker: good but but my my My mom loves him now because of how much he makes fun of Trump. So she loves him all because of that. That is the lowest of the hanging fruit, really. I think it helps because they actually both hate each other.

Speaker: So like, you know, like like ah other late night hosts, like there's not like an like a like a few that's like that everybody knows like, oh, they they actually they actually you would think that if they ever saw each other like in public, they would have a fist fight.

Speaker: You know, like that sort of thing. Right. yeah I mean, i understand i that maybe as part of my issue, like I understand like everything these days is political, but that's just it. like It's just refreshing when you have somebody that isn't doing that kind of stuff.

Speaker: like Oh, like Conan. Exactly. yeah Yes. Okay. Tony can do it all. Because, like, that's just it. And I feel like it it shows more to the talent you have ah to not.

Speaker: You know what I mean? Because it's super easy, like I said, right? I mean, it's just like, okay, fine. I mean, especially it being Hollywood, despite your political leanings, I mean, Hollywood has been known to always be kind of more on the liberal side. So naturally, easy to make fun of somebody that, you know, a conservative president and stuff like that. Yeah.

Speaker: I realize, you know, but that's just it. it's like it it It is, and it's like it's just, I don't know, when I when i want to watch like movies and stuff like that, and award shows, any of those types of things, it's like it's kind of nice just to get a a reprieve from the politics. It's like everyone's addiction these days is is talking about it, so, yeah.

Speaker: I went a little tangent there, James, and then I inadvertently became part of the problem because here I am kind of talking about it. was like, once you start, you can't stop. There you go. Exactly.

Speaker: It's all Kimmel's fault, damn it. Yeah. Fuck you, Jimmy Kimmel. But ah no, i didn't just fuck you as a host. But anyway, um so I want to get into some of the other winners. So, of course, we can go over the obvious ones that we knew we knew were coming.

Speaker: K-pop Demon Hunters winning best animated movie. Of course. We knew that was coming. We knew because of that they would win best original song for Golden. And it won.

Speaker: um So there were some cool highlights for the winners that I want to talk about. So they had the very first award for um what was it? I think it was best casting.

Speaker: So this would go to the casting director right of the film. And it's interesting how how throughout the 98 years of the Oscars, this is the first time having award for casting.

Speaker: um And it was cool how I think it was only... I think that like all the all the all the nominees were women except for one for that. And it made me realize, I'm like, wow, there are more casting directors who are women than anything else, it's which is it's as wild to me.

Speaker: um But it's nice that like that that's more known now because of having this award. so And the the winner for that one ended up being One Bad After Another. Now, did you watch One Bad After Another?

Speaker: You know what, like, I i haven't gone around to watching that one. I've been meaning to you, and obviously since it won all the awards. I'm sure it's a movie i I'll be watching this year, I have not watched it yet. I would love to know your thoughts on some of the actors in that. Like, I would love to, I would love i want you to see how Leo is, because cause Leo reminds me of, uh, reminds me of the dude from The Big Lebowski.

Speaker: Interesting. Okay. just But just much more of a hothead. Or just like... Right. Like, short temper, you know? Right. Huh. Okay. So, it's very funny. ah yeah that was I was actually went i'll surprised how funny went bad after another was, to be honest.

Speaker: um From Leo to Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn. Oh my god. So... Speaking of casting, I'm not surprised that movie won for best casting for how well they incorporated all these actors. Yeah. And then just how well they played off each other. And which is why they probably, I think, I think the most nominations for the acting awards.

Speaker: um Even though I think only one of them won. i think So Sean Penn won for best supporting actor. which i I actually voted for him at the SAG Awards and he won that too. It's funny because he doesn't even show up at the award shows.

Speaker: he he's like He's like, I don't do this Hollywood shit. It's like, I act because I love it. it's it's It's my job. That's what I do. so I thought it was so cool because I think it was only like, think they said was like only three times where an actor won or yeah you know for supporting her lead and weren't in and attendance. I think it was only the third time it ever happened. I was like, damn, that's so cool. Yep.

Speaker: um And there was other, ah my i guess, milestone moments. So for cinematography, it was the first time a woman won for best cinematography.

Speaker: And it was for the what woman who... who um who shot sinners. And, and I remember looking back about, yeah, that was a very beautiful movie to look at. it was very well shot, especially when you have to do deal with the IMAX cameras.

Speaker: And I do remember the scenes where like you would see the aspect ratio like rise and get bigger or does the screen gets bigger, um which of course very very much heightens the scene. um So everything else, you know if noting you know, we don't need to get into the technical awards.

Speaker: a A lot of that went to Frankenstein, like hair, makeup, costumes, stuff like that. Did you watch Frankenstein? it was on netflix i i mean uh okay this is one of those things where it's just like there's been way too many iterations of frankenstein in a very short time frame for me so it's like i didn't i did hear about this one like even before like yeah the oscars or anything like that that apparently it was you know pretty good but it's just like i i've watched too many frankensteins now i don't know i mean i it might be a movie that i

Speaker: take the time to watch. i don't know. Yeah, my... i watched it. I really liked it. um yeah my My girlfriend was obsessed with it. I think she watched it four times. and like Okay, well, so... is it was yeah Is it offering a different spin on Oh my god, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've never seen one like this before. It helps that it's directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Speaker: Oh yeah, I do like him. yeah Yeah, so, you know, he knows how to put spins on things, that's for sure. um And and the the all the actors in it are like masterclass actors.

Speaker: um So and it was also a very beautiful film to look at. it was all very well shot. okay um But yeah, it was cool to see how his vision for it.

Speaker: um But ah where were we now? so some tiger free casting went into that. Anime did that. yeah so Yeah, so the cool thing was with the supporting role, which is rare, um the the villain from Weapons actually won for Best Supporting Actress.

Speaker: which Which is cool, because that was actually the role that Conan did at the beginning of the show, where he was like making fun of. And then she actually won. And I think it's cool because it's rare for horror movies to win acting awards.

Speaker: Right. Yeah, it's kind of it's typically seen as like the lowest form. It's where where a lot actors and actresses get their start. Yeah, I feel like, like especially the otaves actors, I feel like like that genre is like below them. you know Yeah.

Speaker: So that was cool to see. um And I guess you could say Sinners 2 is like somewhat horror. So in the Michael B. Jordan, I mean, it's, you know, I mean, two of his roles are more, you know, yeah you but but you like, I guess more dramatic roles, but then he does turn into a ah vampire. yeah.

Speaker: That was part of the gig. There there you go. yeah um And then, ah yes, so Jesse Buckley won for Hamnet. um now I mean, that that was probably the only award where I knew she... I think that was, like, the only category where I knew she would win because, man, that that role she plays in that is devastating.

Speaker: like there's it like she she she she found she found new ways to like i just have these painful cries of just despair in her life my god damn woman this is is such so depressing but she does it very well so there you go um and so as as we get to the the bigger ones so of course all the all the big awards went to one battle after another So it won Best Picture, it won Best Director, it won Best Screenplay.

Speaker: So when you win all those, yeah, you're not surprised that I was going to win. it's ah It's one award after another. Yeah, that's true. That's what it was. ah so Speaking of low-hanging fruit. It's so obvious, but it needed to be said. needed to be said.

Speaker: um so yeah and that was i was one of my favorites of the year that movie so i was i was glad to see a movie that was deserving to win right yeah and yeah it and that's it and i remember even when i watched it because i was like everyone was hyping this up and i watched i'm like okay i get the hype it deserves the hype and like it's one of those movies too because like when i first started it I would say like the first half hour or whatever, it was like, you know, like this is good, but I don't understand like what the hype is. And it's like not until like Leo's daughter comes into play. And I'm like, ah, now I get it. Cause now like this whole time I'm watching, I'm like, I'm just edge.

Speaker: this It just feels like, I guess that's, i guess with the title, cause it's like each scene that comes up next, I'm like, is this getting more chaotic and crazy? And i don't know what's going happen, but I need to find out. Okay. Okay. Yeah.

Speaker: so Yeah, i'll have to I'll have to add that one to the watchlist for sure. yeah Yeah, I would say as far as all the films for Best Picture, if I had recommend to you yeah i know you... know you already saw Sinner, so yeah, watch one bed after another.

Speaker: you can watch Marty Supreme as well. um Did you watch Uncut Gems?

Speaker: with a is Is that Adam Sandler? Adam Sandler, yeah. It is, eh? Yeah. No, way I never... and he He got nominated for something? Or his movie got nominated?

Speaker: I think that movie got nominated, but yeah he he didn't get nominated for an Oscar. I mean, he should have. He was great in it. Okay. You didn't watch that? No, I haven't watched it. There's so many family movies. I might have to give you that recommendation then. Maybe. Maybe. I mean, yeah is it is is it as good as Happy Gilmore 2?

Speaker: ah It's 100 times better. ha, ha, ha, ha. let Get out of here. ah Yes, I say, yeah, I would say watch Uncut Gems and then watch Mario Supreme. It's the same director who did both. um Did you watch F1?

Speaker: No, no, James. No, I didn't. That's the one with Brad Pitt, correct? Yes, watch that one too. Same director who did Top Gun Maverick. Okay, okay. it's a lot's a lot It's a lot to give me to watch.

Speaker: but okay i was I'm talking about all the award all the award darlings, you know? I understand. yeah yeah And then I'd say watch Begonia with um Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Speaker: Okay. Yeah. if you're If you're looking for for some Oscars that i I definitely think should be watched. Okay. When you have the time. You know, no rush, no rush.

Speaker: Right, right, right, right. Yeah. Yeah. But but if you do if you do make it out to the theater soon, I do recommend you go you watch Project Hail Mary.

Speaker: You know, it's funny, like you were saying, I kind of wish... Because there's been a couple times more recently and haven't looked, but I was just like, I was thinking, I was like, I got a little bit of time. could probably go catch a movie. Yeah. but There's nothing playing.

Speaker: When did you say this? I think so. Huh? You said this when? When?

Speaker: I'd say, ah man, like I'm trying to, definitely a few weeks ago. i don't know if maybe that movie hadn't been out yet or maybe it just, it wasn't really one that I was familiar with at all or, yeah I don't know because but that's just, it like sometimes I'll look and I'll be like, there's like, yeah, I don't know. I mean like,

Speaker: i I understand someone will be like, oh, there's this like foreign film. I mean, whatever. You know what I mean? like i I'm just saying its like there's nothing I've heard of. If I haven't heard of anything in the movie theaters, i like I'm probably just not going to go I haven't heard of any of these movies. Granted, sometimes I am living under rock. You're definitely living under a rock because Project Hail Mary has already made $300 million in the box office after, what?

Speaker: 10 days? I mean, in in today's box office, so that that's not very much money. like really That's actually, for an original movie, that's an insane amount. Well, maybe, yeah, for an original movie, I suppose. I also don't know what the budget of this movie was either, because sometimes that's very relevant in terms of how much money it's made. It already made twice its budget.

Speaker: Okay, okay. So what whatever it makes from here on out, it's it's free money. Yeah, yes. Because I heard before that whatever the budget of the movie is, it's comparative to what the marketing budget is. Yeah, so you gotta double the price.

Speaker: in order to And then from there, that's when you that's when you're making the dollars. Yep. Although I feel like they have other ways of making the dollars anyway. but Yeah, I mean, when it goes on a video, you know. Yeah, video merchandising.

Speaker: Yeah, well, yeah, they might merchandise that alien. They'll probably do that, to be honest. Yeah, soundtracks and music and all that other crap. Yeah, there's always something. That's true. don't think they ever lose.

Speaker: But, but, you see what's coming out this week?

Speaker: Enlighten me. The new Mario Brothers movie. Oh, okay, this, like, like, the sequel from the, the other one that had Chris Pratt or whatever? Yes.

Speaker: Okay. Uh, you know what, like, that was a movie that was significantly better than I thought it was going to be, and it, actually, I was kinda sad didn't see it in theaters.

Speaker: I might take the time to go watch this one in theaters. You could do a nice double feature. Is Jack Black coming back? Maybe. Yeah, the whole cast is. Oh, boy. They already announced like who like like the main characters will be for this one.

Speaker: Yeah. Some of the actors for some of the characters are just like, what? Okay. You have Donald Glover, who's voicing Yoshi. Okay. Okay.

Speaker: I don't know that Yoshi should need to talk. I don't think he talks. I think he's just voicing Yoshi, whatever sounds Yoshi makes. Oh, Jesus, okay. yeah Interesting.

Speaker: So, because I think a lot of times they cast like these bigger actors because you know they help promote the film, you know? Because especially it comes the press run, it's like, oh, you see these guys. Oh, we like this actor. Look at them promoting movie. They like they're having so much fun. Let's see it.

Speaker: So, I know, like, that the the one they just announced was, I think, this a few days ago, they announced that Star Fox will be in the movie. Oh, okay. you got me You got me even more intrigued. I like Star Fox. And our boy's voice in him. boy.

Speaker: Yeah. You know who? Well, we got a few boys, so I don't want to be... I want you to tell me. He's more of a newer boy. He's new he's newer. He's newer in the game. Okay.

Speaker: Let's hear it. Lay it on. that Glenn Powell. Oh, okay. You're very excited about this. Right. that That tracks. That makes sense. like it's Yeah.

Speaker: yeah Yeah, okay. but That sounds... Okay, I'm pretty excited about this, actually. So that is definitely something I will see in the movies, I think. So people are saying that this movie will then lead up to a Smash Bros. movie.

Speaker: Right. Maybe. what they're saying. Okay. Well, that would work. Imagine how crazy that one's gonna be. I mean, oh we're ah so excited about the first movie. Like, my dog is named after character in the first movie.

Speaker: Wait, is it named after that dog who's in the movie? No. So, uh, my dog's name is Peaches. Okay. Oh my god, that's so good. And it is funny and because a lot of times people come over right and then they'll be like, oh what's the dog's name? I'll be like, Peaches. And then they're like, pee just Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches.

Speaker: It's a shame that song was not nominated for best original song. Oh right. Yeah, I mean it doesn't matter. It's got that cult following. That's true. it's good It's good. I wonder if they'll have any new songs in this movie. I hope they do.

Speaker: I mean, if Jack Black's involved, I have a hard time believing they wouldn't. He's involved with that kind of stuff. so he's He's got to throw somebody else in there. He does. He does. It's kind of an expectation him at this point. so i don't that that that Yeah, I didn't even know this was coming. You're right, I did. this is why I know you're living under right even as he mario rose yeah is a I should have known that. i But, like, i I don't understand. I mean, like it's ah like, how do I know about this, like, Alan Richson crap, but I don't know about... What is the algorithm doing to me? You only watch Netflix.

Speaker: Is that all you have? No, I... No, I've got, so, we have Netflix. I've got Prime. you can watch Reacher on there.

Speaker: Is it, is it on there? Yeah. Uh, maybe. I might, um I might give that, I might give it a shot, I guess. And then, and then, and then Invincibles on there. You can watch that. We, we, yeah, ah yeah, well we did watch that one, I think. We did, I watched a season of that one with you, I think. There's a new season out right now.

Speaker: Okay. i I'm trying to think. The boys are coming back for his final season. Is Soldier Boy in Yeah. he's He's like one of the main guys. Okay. okay If he's in it, I'm down.

Speaker: So they I saw that this season they have, what is it, Jensen Echols. ah They have, what is it, Sam or Dean? that act it Was it Jared something? Jared.

Speaker: I know I had ba Sam talking Sam and Dean are in this year and I think I think i think ah the actor who plays Castiel oh okay ah Jared Padalecki or Pat Padalecki yes yes hey something like that I don't know who the hell hit like I think I would probably maybe recognize the name if I saw it but yeah the Castiel I think everyone knows Yeah.

Speaker: ah Him by that more so than his actual name. Yeah. So I think they're all in this last season together, which is I can't wait to see. Yeah. Because we we we need a scene with Sam and Dean together on screen.

Speaker: Which you going to lay into it too. Which you know they do because this is the same creator Supernatural. Right. Right. He's looking out for his day one homies. He is indeed. No, that's cool. like ah I think ah I'll probably catch... You said this is the last season of the show, too? The final season, yeah. Okay, yeah. That's that's kind of neat. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it. I just... I don't know. I think that's the problem. is like It peaked with Soulja Boy. and it was like It did.

Speaker: Sometimes for me, it's like I can't can't go back... a to it without it and i remember soldier boy was not in the last season yeah that that but that's why i didn't watch it oh yeah yeah so that's what i'm saying is like i stopped watching it after soldier boy was gone yeah and you know as someone who watched that last season it was definitely by far the the worst there you go and i think i can just tell i think i think they understood the criticism with that i think they're gonna make sure that this season you know it's gonna be um

Speaker: Right. ah You know, it's gonna make fans happy in the end. So... Because that that was the thing. is the it it the The show was good. And then it just, you could tell, like, it peaked.

Speaker: Yeah. And you were just like, yeah oh my god, ah i was like this is so good. And then it was like, and then I heard he wasn't coming back. i was like, there's no way. I was like, it needs him in it. And that that's just it. Obviously they knew that. That's why last season has him in it. So yeah that I might might take the time to watch this. He was in like this very... they head And I saw like what Justin Echols did. like on He did another show on Amazon. i was on this very forgettable show called Countdown. i was like, oh man, this is what they did. I mean, I'd get hear the star I'm rolling into. He probably got a great paycheck.

Speaker: But I'm sure he wished he could be back in the boys. And now he is. So there you go. Right. Yeah. Okay, well, that this says there's some stuff to look forward There's some stuff on the horizon yes to look forward to for sure. so that's and like And I'll make sure to keep you posted as far as any other movies that come out now, so because it seems like you need me to tell you what's happening. Probably. If something's like on on the level of like Mario Brothers, yeah ah yeah I don't understand how I didn't know that that was coming out. it really comes out Wednesday. It comes out on Wednesday.

Speaker: That's cool. Okay, got... There's an Easter weekend coming up, so maybe I'll see if I can catch it at some point. I got a little time off for that. It'd be probably best to see a matinee, because it's going to be packed as hell for those prime-time showings. Matinee is sometimes packed with children is the problem. Oh, so you can do the late-showing. The late-late. Yeah, the late-late showing is usually... Probably best bet. I'll sometimes get some talkers, too, but...

Speaker: talkers too but yeah I feel i I still stand by this. I realize that like cinema is kind of dying a little bit slowly but surely, but I still stand by this idea had since the 90s of like a like a membership where it's like you don't fucking talk and for one.

Speaker: like And if you do, your membership is revoked. I don't care. I like that. I think more more theaters should subscribe to that. Yeah, like just you can have your regular run of the mill, you know, whatever, but you got these these areas are for the members and it's for people that actually want to keep their mouths shut and enjoy the fucking movie. Exactly.

Speaker: but We love to see it.

Speaker: But I think that's all I got for us.

Speaker: No, that was good. I think that was good. So that does it for for our Oscar wrap-up episode. um we We will be back ah we'll be back probably a few weeks.

Speaker: um and And hopefully we'll discuss some some more films that you get to see in theaters now that you that you know about. Right, yeah. These movies have just come out nowhere. Who knew? Who knew James they were making another Mario Brothers movie? Nobody knew this. Yeah, I know. This is the best-kept secret on the planet.

Speaker: on it ah ah ah Well, I'm glad we're telling everybody now because nea now thinks to thanks to... Well, that's just it. Otherwise, that if we... Yeah, exactly. Now now we we don't have to worry about it it faltering at the box yeah office. Yeah, yeah. So so we we will finally get that Smash Brothers movie. I'm glad now. good.

Speaker: That's good. All right, y'all. That does it for us. Cheers. Cheers.

Speaker: you
