Speaker: You're listening to the Sleepy Games Podcast.
Speaker: Oh boy. You know what time it is? It's time for another! Hot August! Summer Special! Sleepy game style. James, you there, buddy? I'm here. I'm awake. I'm wide awake. Excellent!
Speaker: I am excited for today's episode. It has been far... Far too long, my friend. Yeah, it's it's so it's a long time coming.
Speaker: And I feel like we have we have a doozy of an episode just because of... ah how how big this summer movie season has been and i know i know you got to catch up on some movies uh that I recommended to you on our last show.
Speaker: So I'm excited to hear what you think about them. I did. it I did absolutely. And, uh, honestly, like I can... It's pretty rare. Where, you know, you gotta to get...
Speaker: ah I guess a cluster of movies. and They're all equally enjoyable ah you know like And it's it seems like it's been a long time. Since that's been the case, I feel like there's often a lot of letdowns or just just summer movies that just kinda...
Speaker: go under the radar and like nobody really talks about. But there are quite a few blockbusters. yeah and going off that it's nice to see that the movies people have have been anticipating seem to be living up to the hype. And then there's also movies that no one even heard of that made a huge splash a huge a huge splash in the summer. box office.
Speaker: um most Most notably, which we'll go into, which is ah obsession. Um... But... um i don't I don't want to go into that quite yet. Good. Because I really talked i really hear ah your thoughts on one of the movies that... um I recommend it to you. before with ah Project Hail Mary.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, I mean, uh, you had lots of good things to say about it, obviously, and, and, it's funny because, uh,
Speaker: Let's talk to the woman about this before too. It's like I've never watched A Ryan Gosling movie that I didn't enjoy. And even - Even when he does things that are in genres that aren't really my thing, kind of like The Notebook, still a very enjoyable movie. He always brings it. He always brings it. He does, and he I guess he seems to always attach himself to...
Speaker: Dude. I guess either either it's a script or an idea or whatever, something that is as new and exciting and hasn't been done. ah it There seems to be a lot of originality to whatever he wants to work with.
Speaker: So I can't say I've seen everything He's been in. um But, I mean, most every time I watched a movie with him in it, it's always been great. This one was no exception. Uh...
Speaker: quite quite a unique story too which i think is cool it's refreshing it's something new Um... And... I guess, like, for me, I'm not gonna... I don't necessarily want to ruin... the ending, so I'm not gonna give any spoilers.
Speaker: What I will say is that The things that'll typically make a movie... I guess it's an easy cop -out to make something more dramatic and then maybe more of like, I guess, an Oscar winner or something like that. This movie doesn't go that way. It... it it It kind of...
Speaker: Peace. Especially in the third act, it goes in a way that I guess I wasn't really necessarily predicting it was going to go. and And I loved it for it. And I thought that just...
Speaker: it in In its entirety, the movie was was... was just well done. It was an original like take, like I said. I love the back and forth. Because it's not really a cast -heavy movie, obviously. It's mostly just Ryan Reynolds and what's basically a talking rock. Hey, hey, hey. Don't confuse Ryan Reynolds with Ryan Gosling. Oh, sorry. Not Ryan Reynolds. You were right. the ryans Ryan Reynolds wishes he could be Ryan Gosling.
Speaker: Absolutely. Yes, you're you're not wrong. and I have a nasty tendency to do that with names sometimes and it's never... There's never any meaning behind it. I'm just, I'm horrendous with names. Well, I mean, you know, it's similar, like, I could go out and fault you if you messed up any of the Chris's.
Speaker: I feel like it was it's the same sort of thing. There's so many Chris's out there on top of the Ryans. Yes, exactly. But in fairness, both Ryans are Canadian. I don't know if maybe that came out too. I did know that, yes. So maybe that has, I don't know. But Ryan Gosling with a G, the big G.
Speaker: AKA Ken. Yeah, I can't. and then ah And you know that this is based off a book, right? ah Project Hail Mary? I actually i did not know it was based on. I knew nothing going into this. I was blind completely. It's it's awesome because...
Speaker: i Other than what you had talked about. I knew nothing. Never seen a trailer, didn't know anything about it or anything like that. Yes, so so so so fun fact for you. It's the same same author who did um The Martian. The one with Matt Damon Okay. Yes. um but so when he wrote so he wrote this after the martian came out Um,
Speaker: I think it might be like five, six years. five or six years old, this book. Um... So he wrote this. with Ryan Gosling in mind. Because, um...
Speaker: His name in the movie is, was it Rylan Grace? The same initials? as Ryan Gosling. Interesting. It even kind of sounds a little similar. Right.
Speaker: And... So you can just tell the part was made for him. Right. like the the way he just act the way his character is it's like that it just it just seemed like classic It seemed like all the best bits of how Ryan Gosling is with all his characters.
Speaker: Yeah, like even the opening scene where he's like, I forget, he points to like some piece of machinery and he's like, am I smart? like yeah He's one of the few actors that could pull something like that off and in a very Ryan Gosling type fashion. Yes, he makes it very believable. yeah Yeah, but getting to your earlier point, yeah, the but when...
Speaker: when When the alien came came into play, that that's when it... ah It really shot the movie up to really something special. in um Like, they're they're like this relationship as roommates.
Speaker: The banter they had, and then it just made it much... like much more touching and heartfelt as the movie went on. It does. It does absolutely. I mean, it is a strong recommendation from me. Mmm. And I think you were right when you were saying that, you know, Come awards season, it might be a contender.
Speaker: yeah I think the only... detractor to it is because it came out earlier in the year and and that sometimes that kind of hurts i guess some contenders come over at season time but i i don't disagree that Uh...
Speaker: yeah there's some very good acting in his very original story like even the some of the visuals were pretty pretty good as well too so Yes. Yeah. I'm glad you liked it man, it makes me happy. I did, actually. i I would say probably so far. best movie i've seen this year i would say boom see yeah project easy top three easy yeah 100 yes
Speaker: Yeah, definitely one that that won that will... ah that that That sticks with you. after watching it I felt the pacing was good too. I didn't personally feel like it dragged at all. there It's almost three hours.
Speaker: I know, and yeah and normally I would say that there usually is a bit of a pacing issue when they get that long. For me, anyways... I can't say it did. I know it starts off a bit slow, but...
Speaker: I think that that's important for the movie Myself like I like the way it was done. I thought I thought yeah, I thought it was good all around yeah you kind of need that slow build and then like the i liked what the non -linear storytelling they did with the back and forth from before he went out into space and had this ah Kind of all just culminate, just all came together at the end.
Speaker: Yeah, 100%. 100%. But, uh... Yeah, I mean, that that kind of does enough for me. like Like I said, I don't want to give too much away. I just go watch it. If you haven't seen it...
Speaker: Go watch it. Yes, paint record based big recommendations from us. So, Moving on, so so I guess we'll kind of go in succession. yeah Throughout the year of when these movies were released. So... big box office hit for for Project Hail Mary.
Speaker: Um... The so I want to go into the next biggest of surprise for For me that I watched that I know you did, it was Obsession. um so So, have you heard about this movie at all?
Speaker: Uh, I about it. Five minutes ago when you started talking about it, James. You never heard of this. I honestly live under a rock a lot of days. It's... ah it's it's I don't know. I think it's a blessing. Other people would call that a curse.
Speaker: Peace. I spend very little time online these days. um I find it refreshing. i've also been it's been a busy year for obviously we haven't done any shows it's just been a busy year like i'm not saying busy bad or anything like that but just just busy So.
Speaker: my My bad. My bad for not knowing these memes, James. Enlighten me. No worries. I'd be happy to write it down for you. Um, So Obsession is a horror movie.
Speaker: It was made for under a million dollars. And it was by this YouTuber. Is directorial... I guess theatrical directorial debut. Okay. um And the base of the concept is There's this guy who... really likes this girl he wants to date this girl Um...
Speaker: but he's too afraid to to say something about it. so he he gets like this uh like this like wooden stick thing that he gets from this uh kind of little Like...
Speaker: kind of goofy store that has like little nicks like nicks and necks or whatever so he gets like what they call one wish willow So what you do is you make a wish.
Speaker: you snap it and then you know it might come true So he wishes for this girl. to love him more than anyone else in the entire world. Mmmmm. And... remember i told you it's a horror movie yeah there's there's some danger in making a wish like that i'm sure yeah So...
Speaker: So... Yeah, so he makes the wish, and then... ah Yeah, like, fit things turn gray in the beginning, and then they, uh... They turn sour crazy and...
Speaker: Alright. Pretty fucked up, real quick. that That man has obviously never seen that crazy hot scales. that's like No, no, no, no, he hasn't. So what what what would separates this movie, or like I guess what made this movie be so big... is Yes. how relatable these characters were. how situations like this could be relatable. Burp.
Speaker: For one, Toxic relationship wise. Right. two it' Two, seeing different point of views of like, who the real villain in this movie is.
Speaker: Um... And then... Three. It's actually a lot funnier. it's it's It has a lot of... funny -ass moments. like not Like, not like, you know...
Speaker: By accident. Like, it's meant to be funny. and Right. And the... the What makes it great is like it' the tone. They really know how to balance the tone.
Speaker: in this movie very well. Like, with the scary and the humor. Um... But the the the biggest draw, I think, was with this movie was how great the acting was. by the uh by the girl who who was cursed but by the wish and just the range she shows from you know, being crazy but to being cute.
Speaker: um nice and all that and just like how yeah how she could just change on a dime not just like with what she's saying, but with her expressions and everything. and and and and now people are saying that she's the front runner to win The Oscar, which is crazy for a horror movie.
Speaker: To do. And this is like a new, this is a. This is an actress that no one ever heard of until this movie came out.
Speaker: But then I think And then, and then now because of this movie, like she's like jump. Straight to stardom and and then and then she's gonna be they announced he's gonna be rogue and x -men
Speaker: I know you're an X -Men fan. I know you know who Rogue is. I do. I do. I feel like, well, as much as I do. I did actually like the original movies. I think that... Rogue is wasted.
Speaker: Yeah, it wasn't... Yank Cyclops is wasted. Uhhh... Yeah, they - they - they - they - they shit the bed. yeah Like, they're good movies. I enjoyed them. yeah But I don't know what they were thinking in changing some of these characters the way they did. Uh...
Speaker: Yeah, like if you're an X -Men fan anyways, like Rogue was more like Jubilee. Almost, then she was. Rogue. Right. um Especially with the yeah the attachment to Wolverine. But that's I'm going off on a tangent here. I apologize. know i I know how much you love X -Men. Yes. That's why, you know. but But I do think she will... um um she wish she will do the character justice.
Speaker: Good. I'd love to see that. Uh, maybe. Even though I still got that bit of that superhero fatigue. Yeah, I know, well I mean, but... I feel like if certain characters...
Speaker: Or done right that you wished were done right before. I can help make the movie better. Yeah, we'll get to that. Yeah, yeah. yeah Yes. um but But yeah, so... I value very much recommend this movie to you. I don't want to spoil too much.
Speaker: Um... But like, it'd be a great date movie. with you and your girl. Right. Um... Because it would be funny to hear... her point of view on this as well uh you know what like i might like especially the way you're describing it like and it's a fair point right because i mean like realistically in my mind The bad guy.
Speaker: is the one without the balls just to make a move rather than using some sort of voodoo or something like that. Right, right. I don't think that ever goes over well, and James. You just gotta, you just gotta, it's on. Always uncomfortable. Just gotta make that move. I know. Move.
Speaker: There's a... Rip the band -aid, man. Rip the band -aid off. Yeah, i i don't this is a quote from a movie. I know it is. I don't know which movie it is. But it stuck with me. And I dig it.
Speaker: He who hesitates Masturbates.
Speaker: What is that from? I don't know, but it's glorious. And it has to be from a movie. It did not come from my brain. That's so funny.
Speaker: Um... Yeah, so so i I recommend it for you and your girl to watch. But yeah, I wanted to bring it up because it was a... Box office juggernaut for... but Remember, is the budget was under a million. Most movies nowadays are around 75 to 100 million dollars. Yeah. And it made like 500 million. So you think about the profit.
Speaker: this movie made for having such a small budget is obscene and like all i not very much marketing clearly because i haven't even heard of it so that's surprising i i thought you would you would not be able to avoid the memes from this movie because there's so many that came out well i guess like i don't i don't spend that much time on social media it's possible you might have saw something If you didn't know what it was.
Speaker: the The biggest the biggest if it's got to be on the level of dune bucket if it's not on the level of dune bucket I won't have heard of it And that is my that is my ah my bar. Dune bucket. That's good.
Speaker: um ah So... So i guess I guess moving on, it's like... I mean, like, so the other the other one I watched was another, like... big box office juggernaut, but I don't know. We won't even go into it too much.
Speaker: i did i did I did see Toy Story 5. The other day. Okay. No, you know what? Like, ah I'd be curious your take on that. if I -I've not seen it. i mean Have you seen the rest of them?
Speaker: Well, this is what's weird Because like I grew up with these movies and i mean I'm familiar with them. But I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty sure the only one I've seen...
Speaker: I think is the third one. But when you've seen Yeah, well, because this was many years ago. i i want to say It was either the third or the fourth. I'm not too sure which. and It was like... it was Next girlfriend. A girlfriend at the time, this was many years ago, she's like, She thought it was like blasphemy that I hadn't seen any of them. that It was in the theaters. And she said, we gotta go see this. And I was like, you know what? I don't have any hatred towards those movies. I just...
Speaker: I never ended up seeing them. It's not... It's not because I didn't want to. I think it was just because, like... Wasn't as easy when we were kids, right? Like you had to go to the video store and you got - And if Surf Ninjas was there, James...
Speaker: I was taking that over Toy Story. so but anyways Yeah, so I think it's the third one. If I'm not mistaken. Is that the one where he goes off to college, right?
Speaker: Yes. Yeah, so that's the one I've seen. So a lot of people, including myself... I think the third one's the best one. Oh, well, look at me. Yeah, so...
Speaker: It was good. I enjoyed it. It's all downhill for you now. toy um
Speaker: Yeah, damn. I don't think I've ever met someone who's only seen the third one. That's wild. Yeah, like I and it's the strange too because like I'm I'm definitely in the age bracket That I yeah should have seen them when they came out. And and I know that for a fact.
Speaker: uh it just never happened i guess i saw some of the other movies at times it was like lion king i think that that that came out around that time yeah it came out like a year or two before yeah And and but I saw that, obviously, but anyways, yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, so... the what The great thing about the Toy Story movies is they're all good. Like, even the worst one is at least good. Right. um And this one's no different. like if Like, if I had to rank them, it would be be probably three.
Speaker: to 1 5 4 But again, they're all they're all these like Eats. out of ten like that's how good the series is um And...
Speaker: its that They know how to take characters that... They, you know, they at least like... in the other movies and then flush them out a lot more so you see sides of them you didn't see before you're like oh it didn't make it kind of gets you to connect with them even more than you thought you could yeah um And it's just crazy how five movies in, they find new ways.
Speaker: for to to get these characters in these situations that, now i would one, are relatable Like, funny... Um... And... but like the whole family can enjoy. We're like, Kids can get... You can get it just because they like seeing all the toys and everything and they still sprinkle a lot of adult humor that only adults would know.
Speaker: Right. They they They've been known how to do that for years. And that's why I guess they're good like they're good at spacing you out these movies. like They're not just like... Because it doesn't feel like a cash grab. It feels like, oh, they have something that that this movie has something to say.
Speaker: Well, like because I... I think this the first one came out, I want to say I was like in the second grade or something like that. Yeah, it was like 95, 96. yeah like i was yeah like i was definitely i know it was an elementary school but that that's wild to me Like, and you're right, like, it's not it's not like the fast movies where there's something just cranking out or anything like that. It's, uh, yeah, like, I mean, that's cool. yeah they wait till they they have a a good story to tell right they know audiences will connect connect with
Speaker: And, you know, because of that, you know, it's easy billing dollars because people are going to recommend it. Like, oh, yeah, this isn't just a... this is It's like a run -of -the -mill sequel. It's actually a good good fucking movie.
Speaker: Well, and I think I think part of that might also be like that the main cast too. Yes, I I think that it's it's near and dear to their heart. I don't think they would ever want to do it ah an injustice to it. I know Tom Hanks is... a He's that type of guy. I think he takes his like i guess his art seriously, so to speak. It's not just a cash grab. And with this movie...
Speaker: he like Woody takes a back seat. He's not the main character in this at all right Like, it's about the first movie where he's not the main character. Which is pretty cool. Um...
Speaker: And... And then so... What else? What else? But yeah, so it's a it's a it's another recommendation. I mean, like it's yeah mean we're we're going into all the recommendation movies. That's what we're doing here today. um So, yeah. easy billion dollars that made so like as we're moving on down the list I guess for the next two, it'd be both movies that we saw.
Speaker: so Right. The next one that came out was The Odyssey. The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan. See, he knows himself.
Speaker: I know you're excited to talk about this one, James. Yes, I am. yeah Yes. So it's funny with this movie because there was a lot. A LOT of people wanting this movie to fail.
Speaker: And... it only only here it Did you know about this? You didn't know about this? No, why would anyone want it to fail? Is it... Okay, I'm curious. Why why does anyone want to fail? And is know it something stupid?
Speaker: Very stupid. Okay, it is something stupid. okay Very stupid. Let's hear it. so so you know a lot a lot a lot of online people like have they have their own personal agendas to to to try and get views to to try to bring about a certain narrative.
Speaker: of why this movie should fail. you like I feel like I already know where you're going with this. but Yeah, but you carry on. It could be true or false, but right whatever like for them, it's like, whatever I say goes. It's right, you know?
Speaker: um So I think one of the things was... they They were spinning a narrative how Elliot Elliot page was gonna be Achilles Okay.
Speaker: Right. And do you know who Elliot Page is? Yes, I do, I do. Do you remember the character in Odysseus? yeah I do, and actually it's funny because yes, like the Achilles is missing. Killian's not in the movie.
Speaker: Yes, and that's... Achilles is mentioned. Achilles is mentioned. Yeah, and I would say to to an extent, I mean, that is kind of a disservice to the original work, I suppose, but I know that they were making their own adaptation, they were changing some things, and I get where they were going with it. Like, really, like for the story they told, Achilles would not fit in this story at all.
Speaker: Uh... No, not... No. not really like they they went a completely different approach to it they changed kind of like the underlying theme and tone of the original work so yes Yeah, it. So that was one thing they were trying to bring it down. And then like when when it came out, they're like, wait.
Speaker: Elliot Page is just like this one soldier that they use to... say this is a gift, the Trojan horse is a gift, and that's it. Yeah, it's a very, very bit part, really. Maybe like one minute of screen time in the beginning and then three minutes of screen time later? Yeah, yeah maybe. Yeah, exactly. so Maybe.
Speaker: Yeah. and then and then the other thing was they were upset because um they They casted Lupita Nyong 'o as Helen of Troy. Uhhh...
Speaker: i Should I even ask what the problem is with that? like yeah but yeah People were upset because she was black. Well, and I mean like... this is one of those things that's like and I read and i get it I know it's a thing when it and it comes to movies but it's like If we're gonna be...
Speaker: True to I guess the art form that is like theater Or whatever like if you go back to the days of Shakespeare the that The female characters...
Speaker: We're often times being played by men. Yes, most of the time. this this this is This is going back. But it's... It's artsy that it's always going to be pushing these types of boundaries. is like And if you're, I don't understand.
Speaker: You know what? Whatever. I get it. Everyone needs their... triggering five seconds of whatever. Exactly. They're trying to appeal to a certain audience and they're hoping with what they were pushing was going to get this movie to fail. Right. I don't know if you knew this, Sleepy Jim.
Speaker: But the Odyssey is said to be the The... Moose. and the top grossing r -rated film of all time Uh, this is actually news to me.
Speaker: uh but i mean like let me tell you how crazy how crazy is so Do you know that you know what the top grossing R -rated movie was before this one? Uh...
Speaker: We talked about on the show. We have talked about the show. Yes. I mean, like, I don't think it's this one, but one that comes to mind, I guess, would be Logan, but I don't think that's it. Dude, you're close.
Speaker: Okay. Oh, Deadpool, probably. Yeah, Deadpool Wolverine. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got it. Yeah. Okay. Yep. So so that that was the one that was the top -rated gross movie. Now the Odyssey just took it.
Speaker: Right. yeah hope Now, now... but For how hyped I was for this movie... I... I would have said you're crazy. for this movie to make that kind of money.
Speaker: But I guess I just underestimated like how universal of a story the Odyssey really is. and how like worldwide people know this story. Boy. And we'd love to see the jacket.
Speaker: yeah it's exactly all the stories on the planet like yes like you've I should, well, I mean, real, if yeah, it doesn't matter where you are on the planet. there's a good chance you've heard of it like and it's it's not obviously it's original language wouldn't have been in english and stuff either it's been translated into i'm sure every language by this point so and i think that was something that i think was smart by christopher nolan like he didn't like you know, do do the same kind of language from the from the
Speaker: the text or the the way Homer wrote it. or the or the way it writes the The Homer -esque writing, I guess, is the best way to call it. um and Made it more like, uh...
Speaker: I guess. I guess more of today's Yeah, modern day English. They dropped the F -bomb. Yes. Yeah. and yeah And what what I think would help too is you're getting a lot of A -list actors. Even a lot of A -list actors playing side characters.
Speaker: Right. um That helps as well. You went on to the set of Spider -Man. You were like, okay. i'm just I'm going to take everybody here. All right. Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya. Man, here we go! Yeah, I didn't. Yeah, because I didn't i didn't know the Punisher was in it until I saw it. I was like, oh, damn. Man, he's with Helen and Troy. Good for him. Yeah. Um...
Speaker: But, yeah, so, I mean... You're mixing all that together. You have is Christopher Nolan. Um... directing, which a lot of people, it's a lot of everyone like because everyone calls him he's like the like the this generation Spielberg.
Speaker: And and when this maybe even shows even more with how much Anticipation how people are hyped for him. Right. And. Yeah, and then, so... i We're talking a little bit about the casting.
Speaker: The standouts for me... First of all, Matt Damon Killed it. This might be like... Easy top three Matt Damon performances. I've seen.
Speaker: Like, you can tell he he he he he he wanted, that he like he's like, I'm making this roll. i'm gonna fucking kill it and he did i'm like you go matt damon you go ah ah um And then another standout for me,
Speaker: Allez! I didn't realize you could play villains so well. Robert Pattinson. Man, he just played a slimy guy. I just want to punch him in the face. Yeah, he's pretty greasy. Definitely a grease ball. I feel you. so so his line is memed all the time when he says uh like somebody get these beggars out of here like everyone but loves us the way he says that line and then uh i thought in that So the surprise for me was... um Uh...
Speaker: John Leguizamo. Uh, yeah, a little bit. He was great, yeah. He was great, yeah. he's but He's phenomenal in everything he does in my eyes, but... Oh! His best work. Super Mario Brothers.
Speaker: Oh, I thought you were gonna say Ice ice Age.
Speaker: Oh, man, yeah. so it So it was cool co seeing him in a movie like this, because because I feel like you don't not every day you see... John Leguizamo in a blockbuster, you know? No, it's a little... It's a little out of character for him, but he fit the role well, and yes it is... He... he he Now he's - he's seamlessly into this movie. It was good. It was it was good to see him like this.
Speaker: Yeah. but yeah But I'm curious to know more of your thoughts. well well Actually, before before that, I want to talk about the theater experience. So I saw that i sold the movies. ah Twice. I saw one one with... the my girlfriends and friends of mine,
Speaker: and other time with my parents. Eats and We saw it probably two weeks after it came out the first time. And then a month after it came out the second time,
Speaker: Yeah. but Boat time sold out shows. Alright. And I was like, man. Like... No wonder this movie's making this kind of money. like Even after all this time, it's still selling out, selling out.
Speaker: So, So I'll be curious how how how your experience was. Um... thoughts of the movie and and what the theater experience was like. Alrighty. Uh, yes.
Speaker: So, I mean, I went last night Uhhh... and like because i i really i wanted to watch the movie and i was like okay crap we're doing the show tomorrow i was like screw it i'm gonna go It was cheap night, so it's Tuesday, and I find typically Obviously I like saving a couple bucks, but at the same time I find that sometimes you end up getting a lot more talkers.
Speaker: In the movie on Tuesday's cheap night and stuff, right? So I was just like, ah, whatever as I go. I'll just go and uh yeah it was despite the length of the movie i I won't say it was sold out. I mean, there there was a fair bit of people in there. It wasn't sold out, but like everyone was quiet.
Speaker: everyone was into it like it it's one of those rare experiences where you you're picking Not but other people's emotions as they're experiencing what they're seeing on screen, right? uh you don't get a lot of that anymore like there wasn't you know there's no one on their phone phones there's no one chatting like it's just everyone's glued to the screen i didn't even really notice anyone you know taking bathroom breaks despite the fact that has like a three hour run time so Yeah, it takes me back to those those earlier experiences in movie theaters, which...
Speaker: I find are becoming very rare these days.
Speaker: It takes you back to... I guess more childhood years where it's like yeah the experience was just so much more immersive. And there was less less distractions, less talking.
Speaker: uh just a better movie experience where like the the energy is is just it's alive it's electric it's in the air you know what i mean like maybe i'm sounding a bit corny but i think you know what i'm talking about wait i'll be curious so with your thing because i know because the big thing with this movie too i think that was also one of the draws of this movie was it was the first movie that was filmed entirely in IMAX.
Speaker: Um... So, what was your... was was your theater was i mean it probably wasn't an imac screen but was it like uh i they have like these gimmicky kind of theaters now where it's like uh XD something or Adobe something. Do you know something special at all or was it just a regular theater? This was just this was just a theater. like just It was a a fairly decent screen, good sound, i no complaints really is all I'll say.
Speaker: ah But yeah, no, it was just... ah uh Like I said, I love i love having that experience. It's something you can't replicate. at home even if you have like a fairly big screen and surround sound it's just having other people there that are just as immersed in it with you I feel like it just it just adds to the experience for me.
Speaker: But yeah, in the long and short of it, that was that was my experience. Luckily for me... a man is not to need a bathroom break in the three hours i find that sometimes that's not the case and i end up there because you know you got to get you you know you know how it is james you gotta get your popcorn you gotta get your drink for the popcorn the popcorn salty And then you're like, halfway through the movie, you're just like, ahhh.
Speaker: Okay, I'm gonna wait for i'm on away from what I think is a dead spot. so so So I did that too what like when I first saw it. So I hope seeing it again because I knew a good time to go. But when I saw it the first time, I'm like, ah.
Speaker: I gotta go. And like, I think it was after... It might have been after the part with the Cyclops. Right. i was like okay maybe this is a good time And then um then I didn't realize like once they Got off the island.
Speaker: Then they went... Right back onto another island. I'm like, man. they Like that fast. And then like, it was like literally like I'm walking back and I see like all the giants. Coming after them, I'm like, damn, i but how did we get here so fast? Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, I thought there was going to be a little bit of a lull here. They would go back to where Tom Hound and Anne Hathaway are and everything. Right, right. A little bit more politics talking. Yeah, I got you. I got you. I feel you.
Speaker: Thanks. but But then I was wrong. I was like, oh, it's thrusted right back into that them. Say it again. We got to get out. We got to go back to the ships. Back to the ships. ah It's so funny.
Speaker: But yeah. Uh... Well, I did... yeah I was telling you a little bit... Before the show, so I made... In the spirit. Of the the hot August. Sleepy Games Summer Special.
Speaker: Yeah. I made... An honest trailer. For the Odyssey no way I did I did and it's funny because like I watched it last night So I just like I just kind of cranked this out today like just because I still had to work today So I was just like I was thinking about was making little notes and stuff so Uh... I guess at the end of our review...
Speaker: I will share my honest trailer. uh, with you and obviously with, uh... with our fans that we love ever so much. So as as far as the review like the review for this movie now...
Speaker: Y 'all Okay. Um... All right, well, I want to hurry up because I want to hear this. ah ah So... my My final thoughts. Yeah, it's a big recommendation. I'd probably give it... um um like As far as Christopher Nolan movies that came out recently, i probably his...
Speaker: I mean, I really like the Oppenheimer, but like... this one i probably might especially seeing it again I think it did like... Sometimes when you see a movie again, it flows better. And this is when that movie, it just flowed. I was like, man, I wasn't like, so it was cool the second time I watched it. So it was funny how this happened. So.
Speaker: Like... like Because I'm a SAG member, I can get free movie tickets at the Cinemark. Okay. They cut down as far as how many you can get at a time. so like So I can only get two the one time. And I was going to plan to go back to get another one in that same spot where I sent my parents.
Speaker: So. Like I was saying, because it's sold it out. I was like, shit, so now there's only like a single seat I could get. like it was It was in the same row, but it was like three or four seats down.
Speaker: so i'm like oh well you know i mean i mean you know when you watch a movie you should be focus on the movie you should matter who's next to you and we'll talk about afterward and we did But it was cool because the the person I sat next to, was also like there by himself.
Speaker: and and And he was like talking to me a bit about it like beforehand. he's like He's like, dude, I know nothing about this movie. like People just talk told me to go see it, and now I'm here. I'm like, dude, you're in for a treat. I'm like... And he's like, the only thing I know is Tom Holland's in it. And we're talking about Spider -Man. He's like, yeah, I thought Spider -Man was okay and everything. We had a little conversation about that. Yep.
Speaker: And I'm like, that's all you know? I'm like... but Oh. I'm like, dude, there's so many people in this movie. I was like like i was kind of rattling off as far as like like like not not so much the actor, but like the characters they play. I'm like, not only is Spider -Man in this, you got Batman in this, you got Jason Bourne in this, you know you got Catwoman in this.
Speaker: yeah get the put You got the Punisher in this. You know, I'm just leaving all that. It's just so he'll know who they are. um see so and then and then uh what then because i know what's happening i've seen this movie so it's fun seeing this person not knowing anything about this story, seeing his reaction to it, and, like...
Speaker: You know someone's into the movie when, like, They're like at and at the top of their seat. I'm almost was like I've fallen off the seat. like That's how much he's like,
Speaker: like glued to the screen and like trying to get closer and everything yeah like like wait when he was when he was getting to the end of the movie he was just like he was so hyped it was just so funny to watch Oh, man. But yeah, so it made that theater so and that... That's why I love the theater experience because
Speaker: you know you You're not going to get that watching it at home. like You're not going to see people's reactions. and it was It was cool. knowing what scenes come up and be like oh i wonder if the the crowd can react a certain way to this scene and and they did i'm like oh i wonder if they're gonna react this way with this scene and they did I was like, oh, that's so cool. Um...
Speaker: but Yeah, I just want to go off that a little bit because actually I just love the - the cinematic experience because of little things like that. No, I agree, man. I was just talking about the same thing. I hope he remembers that theater experience for the rest of his life. And it like and he could tells people, yeah, I sat next to this white boy. like he was He was so cool. like He told me about the movie. We were talking a bit. and um
Speaker: You know, we literally just just exchanged names. His name was Isaiah. but but didn't exchange numbers or social media or anything it was like it was just just for this movie it was like The experience was just for this and we're leaving it at that. That's right.
Speaker: Yeah. ah I dig it. Yeah. Well, you you you failed to mention what I feel is like the most touching. ah And for me,
Speaker: I think. The highlight. of this move. tell me tell me tell me Yeah, you might you might know where I'm going with this ah you might not But James, the one the one that that tugged at my heartstrings the most.
Speaker: and And I know that there's some heartstrings to be tugged on this movie. Yes. It was the dog. Oh my god. It almost... It almost got waterworks out of me, I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker: but So... So, the i told him I told my parents... This going in because they have quite the attached attachment to to my dog Moki now, right?
Speaker: And I told him, I'm like, I mean, like, all I told him was, That. They... I told him that Christopher Nolan, he changed what the dog scene was for this movie. to how it really is in the uh the written text And he changed it for the better.
Speaker: Right. That's all I told that's all i told him. But boy, when like I did not see that scene coming. And when it happened, I'm like... Are you fucking kidding me?
Speaker: Like, for the, for, for, I mean, I don't know if we want to say what happened. But like, we like you you you and me know, we know. It's enough. Yes, it hit us. It hit both of us hard. Yes. It does. It does. It's good. It's well done.
Speaker: Uh, and yeah, like, it it just, yeah, it it was unexpected. Yes. Yes. and ah And I didn't need any more from the movie. that That was enough for me.
Speaker: Yeah. I was expecting you to tug at the heartstrings this much, and you did, and you don't need to do it anymore. That's enough. That's right. Yeah, i did I was done. That was the climax of the movie for me. Yeah, yeah. I was like...
Speaker: I was like, I'm satiated. I don't really care what happens next. God, man. can't even think about that again. Yeah, yeah. i but yeah but but I'm staring at Milky right now. I'm like, ugh. You and me, Moki. Right here. Right here. You and me.
Speaker: All in all, though, yeah, no, it was ah it was a good movie. I mean, definitely... It is, and this is the thing, the one thing I will say, and I know people have more than likely been talking about this a lot. like It does take a lot.
Speaker: of what I would feel are creative liberties. It's definitely a different adaptation. Of the original. it It basically ends up changing the underlying theme and tone. of...
Speaker: Of homers like the Odyssey I guess so
Speaker: Like, do you think he makes ah Odysseus, a little like... I mean... I know as far as like he he he he deserves to have this. you know thrust upon him for like what he did to kind of I guess you could you know kind of cheat. the way he did.
Speaker: right um And for like the gods to kind of punish him for that. but I mean, so i like I did like watch like a video. of like comparing the two.
Speaker: Yeah. And, like, there were some scenes I'm like, oh, you know, I'm kind of glad he didn't include that. But there are some scenes I'm like, you know what? I think maybe he could have added that there. That would have been pretty cool. but Um...
Speaker: But I mean, you know, like... You're making an almost three -hour movie. There are some things you've got to cut. There are some things you got to take some certain liberties with. Um...
Speaker: And... Like, i would I mean, I know Christopher Nolan's not one to do like a... have like a director's cut or whatever. But I would be curious to know what was cut.
Speaker: You know? Well... Yeah, I mean, and, and and ah like, yeah, and I would talk about that as well, but, I mean, for me, it's like... Ummm... even just like The underlying theme, there's some heavy social commentary.
Speaker: In this movie about like war PTSD and stuff like that and like that is not at all in the original if anything i would say that the original is more about glorification of these types of things, right? Oh, yeah. Well, yeah, I i guess for... Third.
Speaker: For the times that we're in now, it's probably for the best that he did it the way he did it. And that's what I was going to get into, too. everyone makes their own adaptations and their own you know the their own spin. on it and it's always a sign of the times that you were living in. Yeah. And that's... and And about all the controversy that you were talking about earlier, I would say, again, it's just a sign of the times that we are living in. and the movie hollywood like it reflects
Speaker: That generation that time and it kind of locks it in and in that aspect right so yeah
Speaker: But yeah, I'm i'm glad i'm glad that he made it the way he did. put a stamp on it and It's, I mean... I mean, it it turns it turns out it it worked out well.
Speaker: rest Top R -rated movie. Your top a grossing R -rated movie of all time. Way to go. You did it.
Speaker: So ah yeah, so yeah, so should we hug? Yeah, I wanna hear the trailer. Okay, I was going to say, like if you've got nothing to add... i a heart that That's all I got. It's a huge recommendation. It's going to be in the running with... Project Hail Mary for all the awards.
Speaker: There you go. Absolutely. I mean, again, strong recommendation for me. I mean, obviously go into it if you've read the original book. Have an open mind. It's going to be a bit different. but the way The other thing I want to say before we stop, it it felt like classic Hollywood.
Speaker: Like this movie, like... Because... you know i you know there's always the same like they don't make them like they used to but like For him to do everything so practically, Like when you're on the ship, you feel like you're on the ship.
Speaker: Like he's he he's filming all these different locations. Like, there's only one time I could... like I was like, all right, you had to use CGI here because there's no other way around it. It was like when the the one rock monster or whatever, I'm like...
Speaker: yeah I think that was the only time like he had CGI. i'm like I don't think there was any other time there was! yeah Like, even the Cyclops is practical. Right, and it shows that it's a little uncomfortable to see on the screen. so The other thing real quick, yeah I like the... Because we're talking about the heart movement obsession.
Speaker: I like how he snuck in some horror movie type scenes. Yes, he did. With the Cyclops and then with, uh, Cersei. That's all I'll say with right that character.
Speaker: right But you know what I'm talking about. I do. That was so freaky, man! that that seemed like i was i wasn't expecting to be like really grossed out by that The way that was being shown.
Speaker: Yeah, I agree yeah yeah there's a few yeah 100 but again and that's why it's got that r rating too right so Yeah, because for the most part it feels like a very light R.
Speaker: very digestible are you know I didn't even realize it was an R rated movie like yes until you said that today I was just like oh I was like I guess it probably is no no no I think that that could probably help for a general audience too because like People would be telling other people, like, oh, yeah, it's R -rated, but, like, it doesn't feel like...
Speaker: yes yeah it doesn't feel like most r -rated movies are yeah All right. We are. Yeah recommendations from us. All right, sorry get into the honest trailer. Let's hear this Alright, this always takes me a while to...
Speaker: yeah I get the lower voice going. I don't know. Wait, I'm going to mute myself so I don't get my laughter in the way. Oh, no, sometimes laughter helps, Matt. Oh, yeah, okay. It's all good. It's all good. So this is...
Speaker: A Sleepy Games take. on the Honest Trailer of The Odyssey. Ahem. The Odyssey. Three Globes.
Speaker: Glorious hours of a Hollywood reimagining alter so drastically the underlying theme and tone of Homer's book. are more law - Austin Odysseus Christopher Nolan's adaptation focuses on a man with PTSD for being on the receiving end of the Punisher's massive turds.
Speaker: Several days of punishing butt nuggets. Giving a whole new meaning. to the term Trojan horse. Follow Odysseus as he fights a shepherd. with a sight impairment.
Speaker: Watch him run faster than Tom Cruise as he escapes the clutches of knights. wearing steel armor. in what is clearly the Bronze Age. Odysseus escapes once again from Calypso. the world's first date rapist. Who drugs him with roofie? I mean flowers.
Speaker: Then he returns home to his queen, Penelope. who complains why women can't lead a country. but spends two decades on an unfinished cross stitch. then declares that the most important quality a ruler should have is Archery?
Speaker: Featuring... Medieval people - Medieval Peter Parker. Zathena. who no one knows what her purpose is in this movie. A still absolutely ripped Matt Damon.
Speaker: And where the hell is Achilles? Christopher Nolans The Odyssey.
Speaker: How was it? That was sweet. That was nice. Yeah. Well, like I said, I kind of just, I kind of. I just shit it out almost right before we rear. meeting for this. if You got all the important parts. But but you you did make me want to bring up the part about... What's ah was that Uh, Zendaya.
Speaker: i like with I wasn't expecting what they did. Because I thought she was one character when it turned out to be something else. I was like, right. Oh, that's actually pretty cool. Right. but is Because it went into more of the PTSD.
Speaker: Well, yeah, that's the thing. I mean, she she really, like, I guess... I know she's in the movie. I'm not saying she does a bad job in the movie. I'm saying that if you removed her from the movie, you wouldn't really notice any difference in the yeah yeah it but but But when you see it, and then you look then you watch it again...
Speaker: And then like it it goes into more of what we were saying about the PTSD. Yeah, and and I understand, and I understand. like Again, there's a there's a there's a heavy social commentary about the Trojan War, about war in general.
Speaker: and And I guess about like social etiquette, I suppose, to a certain degree, too, so... Uh, yeah. And I mean, and that's just it. is a It's a different take. on on i guess a classic So...
Speaker: no that There's a lot of good memes. So there's a lot of good memes with this movie as far as... ah One... with matt damon tying himself to the boat and with the... the sirens there's a lot of good memes come out with that score that score is second the music in this movie is very good I love it.
Speaker: the The thing I loved with the music that they did... As you notice, like, with, uh... when Especially... when he would string the bow. There's good build up. Right when he flicks that bow, like the string.
Speaker: like that that score just like pounds it's like oh shit oh my god let's go get you hyped
Speaker: Especially that ending scene, oh man. Um... Yeah. Yeah, this movie will will... will be in the running for a lot of awards but it makes me feel like you know I don't want to get into the movie season. We're talking about summer. This is August. This is hot August, buddy. This is hot August, summer, sleepy games. Okay? That's right. We're just talking about summer movies. That's all we're talking about. So we're moving on.
Speaker: we we we We're talking about the Punisher. We're talking about Spider -Man. We're talking about Mary Jane. That's right. Let's go. That's right. Move on. Let's get into it. Let's get into it. All right. Break it down for us, Sleepy John. Break it down.
Speaker: Alright. I actually saw this, I believe it was on... what well it's probably not opening night because i think opening nights like on tuesday night sometimes these days but it was the friday opening weekend yeah so opening nights are usually thursday now yeah earlier and and yeah But opening night Friday, the way it opening night actually is, I don't care.
Speaker: But... Ha ha. Anyways. Whoa! One of the first things I'll say is, like i again, this movie, I mean, obviously I know it's Spider -Man. Obviously, I've seen the other Spider -Mans.
Speaker: ah but my so You so saw all the Tom Holland ones. i've seen I've seen all the Spider -Man. Okay, what you've seen everything. Okay, gotcha. Yeah, so i've seen ah obviously I've seen all the Tom Holland ones.
Speaker: ah I knew nothing about... What was going on? I don't know this movie, who was in it or anything like that. I thought, yeah, I went into it completely blind. I mean, again, I got a little bit of superhero fatigue.
Speaker: I do like the Tom Holland Spider -Man movies. um So, whatever, like we went. I didn't realize the Punisher was in it. Really? So that... Yeah, that that was kind of like, I had no idea. That must have been a treat for you then. He must have liked it. Yes. Well, yeah the thing is, it's a treat for two reasons. One is, like, I like i like John Berthel. He does a really good job with him.
Speaker: He's a good actor in general, actually, I think. Um... But the thing that was really cool, I mean I like the kind of like they kind of like the buddy cop thing going on right or whatever that we've talked about the show too before. But the thing that...
Speaker: I really thought was cool. And I guess maybe some nerds might not know this. But like if you're if you're really a fan of like the old school comic books, Uh, somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but it's like I'm pretty sure I am correct.
Speaker: if memory serves, that Punisher was actually first introduced In Spider -Man comics. Yes, he tries to shoot Spider -Man. Yeah, so this is this has been ongoing for a long time, so it makes perfect sense.
Speaker: I liked him being in it. I liked that they they got the Hulk in at some point too. ah The scene with the both of them is pretty good. he's like He's like, you just don't want to fight the Hulk. he's like That it's so was I was dying. I was dying. yeah the the the The banter between the Punisher and Spider -Man was my favorite.
Speaker: It makes the movie. Yes. Which is interesting because, like... because what there's The Punisher is... very r -rated as far as his portrayal in The Netflix shows, the Disney shows, all that. But he felt so organic for this movie.
Speaker: like he he was that He was meant to be there, I felt. everything Well, and that's the thing. is like he It's funny because... He adds, like, more humanity to the story, which is ironic coming from a character like the Punisher, too, so... yeah uh i love the part where he's in the hospital he dresses up like spider -man oh my god i was dying yeah like he he like knocks and he was like grunting yeah yeah he knocks it out of the park he's he's really good
Speaker: So that that was phenomenal. It's an interesting movie because like there's not... really a bad guy either, especially not more of like one of the classic Spider -Man baddies. So, yeah, I want to get into that with you because... um Because yes, you're right, there isn't a... True. I mean, yes, he does some villainy things. Yes. Yeah.
Speaker: But that character... You know? does do villainy things and a lot of things she does. um And I know, well, I find this isn't a spoiler anymore because people know. People know no now. It's gross, a ridiculous amount of money. I feel like that's just it. Yes. People know. You've already seen it. Yeah. Jean Grey. is the quote unquote villain of the movie.
Speaker: Yeah. And I'd be curious to hear your thoughts, especially a big X -Men fan like yourself. This is kind of like the big... the big introduction to have an This is like the big X -Men character to be introduced in the MCU now.
Speaker: There hasn't really been one until this. Yeah, I mean... I mean, how do I feel about it? I mean, like, I don't really know. I mean... Obviously they're going somewhere with it.
Speaker: Uh... I think she definitely worked. in this movie. because like uh because again like they're they're kind of stuck because they've had all the villains like the classic Um...
Speaker: Spider -Man villains. I don't necessarily think they've done all them justice. I think that we got hooped. on Venom hard. I really actually thought that we were going. to see like a venom. spider -man crossover occur they even kind of teased it and then obviously it it must have not worked out or something for whatever reason. Now, do you think the way they... used um I mean, I guess with him kind of being more spider -like was
Speaker: kind of hinting a little bit of venom. Uh, yeah, I mean, this will there's always been this this idea of like, yeah, like... the The darkness behind Spider -Man, I guess, right? like It is an ongoing theme. like going back for like I'm pretty sure the first iteration of Spider -Man. Yeah. and So yeah, like the the darkness within and all that like yeah But, and that's just it, I just feel like...
Speaker: There's a lot of like... Good story there in the COD books. Like there's a lot of material to be used and I think it's been... severely and I say criminally Underused.
Speaker: and And I think it does a disservice. And I know some people like that haven't read the comics, they're just like, well... Like... Don't you like seeing a new story rather than the comics? I was like, no, honestly, I would rather see these comics like take to the screen so that first of all i can enjoy like a live action thing of something i grew up reading and loved and people could enjoy the stories that like really made me love these characters growing up
Speaker: Because when I was growing up... Yeah, I'm glad you said it because I thought this one felt the most comic book -y of all of Tom Holland's movies. Honestly, though yeah, the way they did it, the approach, especially when he's fighting the hand, I agree with you. Dude, that fight was so cool. Oh my god.
Speaker: And I think that that's why this movie is doing as well as it is it is is that they've actually gone to the core essence of what like a comic book is More so than trying to Hollywoodize it as they do with a lot of things and then it ends up becoming a shell of what it used to be.
Speaker: and then it it doesn't work as well. It's like you've got decades of of like terrific writers that are making cool stories and then rather than they just make this generic carbon copy. story that and that's what they ended up doing with a lot of marvel movies and it's like it's it's too bad in a lot of ways, I think.
Speaker: So, I think that this... what You see with this one, they had they got a... A new director. from the other Time of Holland movies.
Speaker: And then with this one. They had Tom Holland very much involved in the writing process with like how they're doing the story. with this one. Interesting, is that... That's why he had that opening snippet.
Speaker: Well, yeah yeah, well, I think i think he he wanted to make sure to listen to fans. for this. right yeah there wass ah There was a lot of criticism for his first three. or didn't feel like a true spider -man i feel like you're just iron man sidekick Yes, I'd agree with all that. Although I did...
Speaker: I did think the Mysterio was cool. I like that villain. I thought that was well done. Yes. um the i like the last one with all the but i do i like the i I like the last one with Toby and Andrew in it. I love that one. That was neat. And that that is...
Speaker: Like... i know that a lot of people talk about the multiverse and stuff like that and it's a common thing it's a common thing even outside of the mcu but in spider -man's defense That's something that's been going back decades do it's not a new idea for spider -man So it it is true to, I guess, character or true to the writings and stuff like that. so Um...
Speaker: yeah like so in his defense of that i thought that was cool too i thought it was cool they brought back some of the some of the old bad guys and stuff too yeah like like i mean i love the actor he plays um a Scorpion.
Speaker: Um... And I was kind of hoping he was going to utilize it a little bit more. um But you know, yeah I'll take what I can get. At least they brought him back from the first movie. Yeah. i think yeah He can easily come back in another one, too. Right, yeah And uh...
Speaker: But anyways, I mean, like... I agree. Like, it what it was, like, it's... It's kind of like a... I guess, how what's the way to put it? It's a grounded story. It's a very grounded... Yeah, it' it is it is friendly neighborhood Spider -Man. It's not like MCU, like all this fucking crazy shit, right? so And that was one of the major criticisms with the the first three. right It's like they wanted to go back to like... just friendly neighborhood Spider -Man, like like more more small stakes.
Speaker: Yeah. And yeah they definitely did that. percent yeah yeah and and having the punisher there even more so like yeah they they knew what they were doing and i think they executed it well i think it was cool having a Hulk in there too. Exactly, giving credit for all the characters that they're juggling juggling around.
Speaker: it like it just it it fits so well i gave everyone just got just enough screen time that they needed They did it. Alright, I got a question for you though. What did you of the length.
Speaker: I didn't really feel the length. Okay I guess, and I seem to be alone in this, and I mean, seeing how it's made... the Several billion dollars at this point, I i truly am. And don't even rock. It's a good movie. I would see it again. I enjoyed it. I'm not I felt it seemed a bit long myself. Oh, okay.
Speaker: No, no, okay. but but Let's critique it a little bit. The only things that probably would have seemed wrong was maybe they gave too much character to Jean.
Speaker: Do you think?
Speaker: You know, okay, so Possibly that but I wouldn't say so because I again I'm sure they're trying to set up more stuff or whatever like and I get it like whatever Yeah. um Maybe and this is the thing is like and it's not I think it's just an overdone trope.
Speaker: I think... I didn't mind some of the scenes but the whole will they won't they with like Mary Jane. It's just, it's been overdone so many times. I get it. No, no. So I'll disagree with you here because Oh, I'm sure everyone will. Well, no, because...
Speaker: Because... like i saw think people I kind of agree with what people were saying as far as like the first three movies. There wasn't really much of a relationship they had. It was kind of like, oh, we're together now. Yeah.
Speaker: But here it's like... Everything's new now. It's like now I can like start from Nothing. It's like... Okay, and now we have an interesting dynamic as far as... Okay, you don't know anything about this man.
Speaker: And he knows everything about you. um and ah and it made me and i really like the scene i mean Gene did did such a fucked up thing. Yeah, I liked that one. That was good. I love that scene. I did like that scene. Dude, you know what? It actually got me.
Speaker: I actually thought, I'm like, wait, are they actually... They're doing this. No way. No. And then they did. I'm like. You motherfuckers, you got me! They got me!
Speaker: So I give them credit for that. But yeah. um Obviously, you know they're getting back together. Eventually. Probably in the next movie. That's what I think because especially seeing how how you know him in I guess we with the way they ended it too. Red.
Speaker: The friendship. the friendships there. It doesn't mean that like he remembers everything. It's just like... I feel like it's more of a muscle memory sort of thing. Um, Which would we give them a stronger connection anyway. Right.
Speaker: But... Yeah, but but getting back to you, oh yeah, I did feel the length. But yeah, I think if if if they could... Shorten some scenes they could have. But I think because... I don't know. I think it's...
Speaker: I think it's this Spider -Man is a special breed of a character. It's just like everyone in that world just feels... I don't know. I'm always interested in what's going to happen next with everything going on. and Um...
Speaker: Yeah, I saw it. It was told it was told fairly well, yeah. No, in other things, like... Based on how successful this movie has been. when like If you think about it.
Speaker: On paper? like it lacking like a true villain and everything like that like it has no right to be as successful as it has have been um clearly Any negative commentary I am making is is is completely erroneous. Yeah, so so so so so I think, I do feel like for the next one, they should they should bring in a villain that just... Feels like a fucking villain.
Speaker: that you hate. And you want Spider -Man to beat the shit out of him. That's what I want for peter next that's a peter because like even even with the last movie it's like you know he's fighting all these villains that like Need to be cured.
Speaker: you know and then they're good Yeah, but that's... That's actually like, that is classic. classic spider -man though like the yeah majority of his villains are like that's true Well and actually...
Speaker: i have okay i i pissed people off with this but it's like i and i and i this other day is like i i've been a spider -man fan like since i was like a little Oh boy, I still have like... Well, no. But i I had the comic books growing up and stuff like that like it was like I played the video games like I was into it It wasn't like my favorite favorite, but he was one of my favorites, right? Yeah. And I always Always agreed.
Speaker: With J. Jonah Jameson. that Spider -Man was actually truly the bad guy. His existence? was making New York. a worse place. Ooh. Interesting.
Speaker: Well... There's a lot of evidence. to support it though like because Every time he becomes Spider -Man. Like, it doesn't matter how many times it starts up again, he goes at - he starts pummeling the shit out of these random criminals.
Speaker: Then lo and behold... Then there's supervillains. And all of these supervillains Like, if you look at like the classics... They're all people. that are somehow related to him too.
Speaker: And that's the thing, is i sometimes they feel like they've been wronged by him, kind of like Venom and stuff, like... If he were just two. Hang up the key. Or whatever, so to speak. He doesn't have a cape.
Speaker: Uh, but like... you know uncle ben's always talking about with great power comes great responsibility maybe truly the truest responsibility is not using that power. Especially not to be a fucking vigilante.
Speaker: like They did try to humanize the villains. And don't - Get me wrong. I'm not gonna try and portray like every criminal as though like They're necessarily like quote, a good guy.
Speaker: but like you do get instances where someone's helped have fallen on hard times maybe the guy that's jacking some random car maybe he's just trying to support his wife and kids and he just got let go of his jobs and like that's that's all he's thought to do Then meanwhile, Spider -Man's coming up.
Speaker: beat the living shit out of him. Like, come on, like, and then just tying them up in a fucking web? no no No due process or any of the stuff that, like, our society has built.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, that that's a I never looked at it that way, but it's definitely a pretty strong argument. It makes me... Look back at all the other movies and be like, huh. And the press, if you actually follow Spider -Man...
Speaker: his What's his number one villain?
Speaker: It is different. It's different, and and this is the thing, is like than any other superhero, whatever you can think of His his villain, the number one villain. is J. Jonah Jameson, and it is the press.
Speaker: He gets a bad press all the time. That is actually his like quote arch nemesis. Is that why he manipulates the press? By being a part of the press? By being the photographer? That's just it. Like, there you go. You know what? That's the second criticism for me. Where's Peter Ganoa's money? What's his job? What is he doing? How is he living in this apartment? There's a lot of questions. There's a lot of questions to ask, James. Are the cops paying him under the table?
Speaker: i mean I knew he had a relationship with the cop! And i like, how does he decide which criminals to beat up? New York's a big place, he's one dude. You can't teleport. You can web sling. Well, I mean, I think that they tip him off.
Speaker: I think that's what helps have a relationship with the... Sure. And then, like, that just that just creates more kind of, like, it just supports the theory even more. He's like a crooked cop. He's not the good guy. LAUGHTER
Speaker: I mean, it does he he's a vigilante. Exactly. he yeah He's a menace. Ha! As my man JJ says. Someone's got to tie him up by his webs. That's right. He wasn't wrong. I think that's a classic Jonah line, yeah. Get me pictures of Spider -Man. Or string him up by his ribs. Exactly. he exactly But...
Speaker: Anyways, yeah, I mean... yeah that that that That's my my my two cents on Spider -Man though, but epic movie. ah The scenes were cool. I did personally feel like it ran a little long. That is obviously...
Speaker: I think an opinion that only I share, her but... Still. I mean whatever. And maybe maybe I'm just like, maybe... All in all James The new Spider -Man flick.
Speaker: is a strong recommendation from me. And it's for a stronger recommendation for me as well. I think a a lot of the movies that we saw today or saw today ah that we saw this summer ah where were huge recommendations for us. It's definitely been a banging summer.
Speaker: Um... Yeah, I'm not used to so many summer bangers. Um... Which is cool it's cool. It's cool seeing people get back into the theaters. Like with Spider -Man,
Speaker: The box office is going... Bananas. right um it's already the top grossing spiderman movie of all time it's trying to catch up um Like...
Speaker: there's There's actually a chance for it to be the top grossing movie of all time. There is a chance. I heard about that like yeah on the radio they were talking about. but the so it's like it it's good to see because like again i think it I think it kind of is a reminder that Theater is not necessarily dying. if they actually make good movies that people want to see. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ugh.
Speaker: and i think that's what's hurting them more than anything else is just like it No one's gonna go to the theaters to watch crap. Right. That's thats true. Yeah. I mean, so so it's nice that there's some quality. films coming out and like And for people telling people, it's like you have to see in theaters. It's a theater experience. You got to see it there. Right. So that's always great to see. So I'm hoping that continues more and more.
Speaker: um but especially with movies coming down the line the rest of the year and coming out next year, I think i think the i think the theaters are in good hands. I hope so, because like, it...
Speaker: It is it is a shame sometimes like to you know But I think we've talked about that a little bit. little bit too much maybe on this episode anyways but yeah just it is it is cool It is cool to, you know, like re -experience past The past glory that was the theater.
Speaker: absolutely but uh but yeah i i think that that uh that wraps up the uh The August summer... movie butnant where Where we cut the bonanza? What is it?
Speaker: What? i think it was that I think what it is, it's the Sleepy Games Hot August Summer Special. That's it. Yes. It's totally totally not too long. And we're sticking to it.
Speaker: We'll run it back again next year. Maybe. I think the last one was like two years ago, actually. It wasn't last year. It's because the summer movies weren't as good last year. We also said it.
Speaker: We said it might become a thing. It might not. it It's kind of a thing now. This is the second one. It's kind of a thing. We'll see. Yeah, so, I mean, if the movies are as banging as they were this year, we'll definitely bring it back.
Speaker: Right. and I know all you listeners will be looking forward to it. um So thank you for listening. ah we ah we we will We'll have the show back again in the fall. We'll willll we willll be doing it more on a regular basis.
Speaker: But yeah we're we're happy to have you here. uh But... But for me, James Games, Sleepy John, anything you want to end off on? No, man, I'm just gonna end it off on like a hot summer August Cheers.
Speaker: Cheers.
