00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur, you might ask?
Defining the Solopreneur
00:00:33
Speaker
A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one.
00:00:41
Speaker
Hey, what's up, Solorpreneurs?
Insights from Sam Taggart's Sales Summit
00:00:43
Speaker
I recently got back from a door-to-door experts event that is Sam Taggart's sales summit that he did.
00:00:50
Speaker
So I'm going to be sharing some takeaways, some recap from that event, and hopefully inspire you to go sell more this week.
00:00:58
Speaker
Welcome to the podcast.
00:00:59
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:01:00
Speaker

Upcoming Live Event Details
00:01:27
Speaker
So if you have not heard already,
00:01:30
Speaker
You probably knew, but we are doing our first live events, April 17th, 2024.
00:01:36
Speaker
Go grab your ticket for it.
00:01:37
Speaker
This website is just bootcamp.solarpreneurs.com.
00:01:41
Speaker
You can go snag your ticket there, or alternatively, you can actually get a free ticket by just going and getting a SolarCon ticket, which is the event right after our referral bootcamp.
00:01:53
Speaker
So all you have to do for that is just use the coupon code Taylor and you're getting a free ticket to my event.
00:02:00
Speaker
And if you listened to the previous episode, this is maybe two episodes ago now, we actually dropped some super dope bonuses you're getting if you...
00:02:12
Speaker
purchase either your SolarCon ticket or your referral bootcamp tickets.
00:02:18
Speaker
So you can go listen to that episode, but you're going to get scripts.
00:02:21
Speaker
You're going to get the sheets I use personally to get four to five referrals per deal.
00:02:28
Speaker
And a whole bunch of other stuff.
00:02:29
Speaker
You're going to get our newest book that we're compiling right now.
00:02:34
Speaker
That's the Solarpreneur Black Book.
00:02:36
Speaker
You're going to get that.
AI Software Partnership
00:02:37
Speaker
And on top of all that, I'm excited to announce I have partnered with a good friend of mine that just put some finishing touches on a really awesome software that uses AI technology.
00:02:50
Speaker
And it can actually book appointments for you.
00:02:53
Speaker
You dump in all your old appointments.
00:02:55
Speaker
It can follow up with your previous leads using AI, have conversations with them.
00:03:00
Speaker
I think he's even rolling out phone calls that this AI can make.
00:03:05
Speaker
So he's doing an extended free trial for that for anyone that takes advantage of the offer as well.
00:03:11
Speaker
So we're going to post a link to that.
00:03:13
Speaker
And I hope you can join us at the event and get your hands on these awesome bonuses.
00:03:19
Speaker
Okay, but enough of the little promo here.
00:03:22
Speaker
I can't try to keep this way more value than talking about our event, but I only talk about that because I know you're going to literally change your sales game this year if you join us.
00:03:31
Speaker
Today, let's jump into the episode.
00:03:34
Speaker
Like I said, I just got back from the sales summit with Door-to-Door experts, and this was actually the first time that I have been to one of Sam Taggart's events outside of Door-to-DoorCon.
00:03:45
Speaker
I did go to one of his...
00:03:48
Speaker
He had like a D2D tour type thing.
00:03:50
Speaker
But this is the first, I guess you could say, more like bootcamp style, more sales summits, just a little bit more intimate and everything.
00:03:59
Speaker
The first time I've been to one of these.
00:04:01
Speaker
So I wanted to give my take on it and give some takeaways.
00:04:05
Speaker
If any of you have thought about going to one of Sam Taggart's sales summits,
00:04:09
Speaker
or one of these more personalized events, then hopefully this will be helpful for you to hear my experience with it.
Challenges of Event Planning
00:04:18
Speaker
So it was in Phoenix, Arizona, I think Tempe to be exact.
00:04:22
Speaker
And a good time of the year to do it.
00:04:24
Speaker
We're in March, so it wasn't insanely hot.
00:04:28
Speaker
And it's a good thing though, because what was interesting is he actually decided to do an outdoor event
00:04:35
Speaker
which I don't know if I've ever really been to an outdoor event like this.
00:04:41
Speaker
So really interesting.
00:04:44
Speaker
And it was, it did turn out, I think he ended up regretting it a little bit because this particular venue, it was at the intersection of two streets that I swear every 20 minutes we had like an ambulance go by.
00:05:00
Speaker
We had a plane fly over.
00:05:02
Speaker
Seems like we were pretty close to the airport.
00:05:04
Speaker
And eventually you just kind of tuned it out.
00:05:06
Speaker
But in the beginning, I'm like, man, this is like, this is getting ridiculous.
00:05:11
Speaker
Every 20 minutes, there's some new sound you're hearing with all the speakers.
00:05:16
Speaker
So we joked about it and it did disrupt here and there.
00:05:20
Speaker
But yeah, so that was, I guess one turned out to be maybe somewhat negative part of the event.
00:05:27
Speaker
But other than that, it was good.
00:05:29
Speaker
We started on a Thursday night.
00:05:31
Speaker
went Thursday evening to Saturday, basically.
00:05:35
Speaker
And I unfortunately had to dip out Friday night.
00:05:38
Speaker
So I only attended the first couple of days.
00:05:40
Speaker
Takeaways I did get, I thought there were some good speakers, good takeaways.
00:05:45
Speaker
And really, if you've attended other events, me personally, I try to always give you my honest review on these events.
00:05:53
Speaker
I've been to pretty much all of them, right?
00:05:54
Speaker
I've gotten a lot of the Noxstar ones.
00:05:57
Speaker
I go to Door to DoorCon every year, SolarCon.
00:06:02
Speaker
So I feel like I've gone to definitely a lot of events, probably spent out of tens of thousands on events at this point.
Industry Diversity at the Summit
00:06:11
Speaker
I'll try to keep it real with y'all listening to podcasts.
00:06:13
Speaker
So if you do consider going to one of these events, the difference between this versus like maybe a Noxstar event, maybe a Solarcon event, is you got to keep in mind that Sam, he is doing these events for the entire door-to-door industry.
00:06:26
Speaker
So what was interesting is there were guys, lots of guys selling roofing there.
00:06:33
Speaker
I think that was the other big industry was roofing.
00:06:36
Speaker
But I think there was a few maybe pest control guys there.
00:06:38
Speaker
A few like meat salesman guys.
00:06:41
Speaker
So it was sort of like a jack of all trades event.
00:06:45
Speaker
Okay, and you know, pros and cons with that.
00:06:46
Speaker
The cons are that maybe we didn't get quite as much specific solar training compared to some of these other events.
00:06:53
Speaker
Obviously, SolarCon, Noxstar, these events are basically all solar tailored, but this event, it was...
00:07:00
Speaker
at times a little more generalized.
00:07:02
Speaker
And I think to kind of combat that, Sam, he did do a good job about, we had a few like breakout sessions where you had, okay, all the roofers go here, all the people selling solar stay here.
00:07:14
Speaker
But then all the rest of the time, it was, you know, a little bit more generalized on,
00:07:19
Speaker
just mindset, leadership, sales in general.
00:07:23
Speaker
So if you are looking for a super specific solar event, then yeah, maybe, you know, maybe you'd consider going to some of the other ones.
00:07:31
Speaker
Not that it wasn't good, but it's a little bit different.
00:07:33
Speaker
And then the other highlight of it is I think Sam does a really good job
00:07:39
Speaker
at actually helping people apply the things that are being talked about in his events, especially with when Sam got up and spoke, he made sure that we're, you know, doing takeaways, writing things
Hands-On Selling Experience
00:07:53
Speaker
And then what was really cool, I actually missed this, but he had everyone on Saturday go out and actually sell door to door, which never done that at an event.
00:08:03
Speaker
And he had these little no soliciting shirts.
00:08:06
Speaker
And the goal was to go and sell as many no soliciting signs door to door as we could, which again, I missed had to get back for a little concert I was planning.
00:08:14
Speaker
But I thought that's I'm like, okay, that's pretty cool.
00:08:16
Speaker
Actually, getting people to sell at an event like what a better thing.
00:08:22
Speaker
There can't be another way possible that's better to actually apply the information than getting out there and doing it on the spot.
00:08:29
Speaker
It's out of the school.
00:08:30
Speaker
Then he did have some, you know, he had people come up and do their presentations, some little live role plays, which was another thing that was unique.
00:08:38
Speaker
I think a lot of these events, most of the time, you're not doing like live role plays, not quite as much application a lot of times.
00:08:47
Speaker
So I did like that, that Sam made sure to apply it and never seen anyone do like live, hey, we're going out and selling tomorrow, turn it into a competition.
00:08:56
Speaker
So that was really cool that he did.
00:09:00
Speaker
And anything else?
00:09:02
Speaker
Yeah, so I think that's sort of the highlights from what I got.
00:09:05
Speaker
And so I wanted to just go over a couple speakers, some takeaways that I got from the event.
Urgency in Solar Sales
00:09:10
Speaker
The first highlight, we had Michael O'Donnell.
00:09:13
Speaker
He was at the event.
00:09:15
Speaker
He spoke Friday afternoon to us.
00:09:18
Speaker
And we all know Michael O'Donnell, probably the top guy in solar, if not top five in solar doing megawatts and megawatts every year.
00:09:29
Speaker
So obviously, this guy knows how to just sell like a madman.
00:09:35
Speaker
Mike O'Donnell, I'm always impressed.
00:09:37
Speaker
He can just talk, talk and talk and talk and talk.
00:09:39
Speaker
And his ability to just like tell story after story and just like never run out of content.
00:09:45
Speaker
It's a next level.
00:09:46
Speaker
So shout out to Mike, to Mike O'Donnell for dropping some bombs on us.
00:09:51
Speaker
But specifically this time, a takeaway I got is he he told the story of just, you know, Paul Revere, the British are coming, which, by the way, I don't know if you knew that, but.
00:10:02
Speaker
It's actually a myth.
00:10:03
Speaker
He did not go door to door saying the British are coming.
00:10:06
Speaker
Looked it up right before the podcast.
00:10:08
Speaker
So tell everyone that thinks that it ain't true.
00:10:11
Speaker
But Paul Revere, you know, the myth is that when he saw the boats coming, someone flashed the light or I don't know how they flashed the lamp rather.
00:10:22
Speaker
I guess they didn't have spotlights or anything back then, but flashed the lamp that signified the British are coming.
00:10:28
Speaker
So he went, the myth is that he went door to door, said the British are coming.
00:10:33
Speaker
And he had just so much urgency that he was going door to door.
00:10:37
Speaker
And it's like, hey, come on, you got to do this now.
00:10:40
Speaker
I'll tell you on the way what's going on.
00:10:42
Speaker
So Mike compared that, that we need to have the same level of urgency when we are out there knocking our own doors.
00:10:49
Speaker
People, a lot of times, they don't think there's any urgency to go slower.
00:10:54
Speaker
But he just talked about how things are changing.
00:10:56
Speaker
California, we had net metering three.
00:11:00
Speaker
We have incentives that are expiring.
00:11:03
Speaker
Arizona, they're going through some changes right now to their net metering policies that are probably taking effect soon.
00:11:10
Speaker
So his point was that we don't know when any of this could be ending.
00:11:13
Speaker
And we need to approach our selling with that same type of urgency that Paul Revere had and just basically say, hey, British are coming.
00:11:22
Speaker
I know you looked into solar a million times, but things are changing.
00:11:25
Speaker
I'm here because of the law change.
00:11:27
Speaker
Do you guys hear about the law change?
00:11:29
Speaker
So he gave us some examples how he would use that.
00:11:33
Speaker
So I thought that just was a good reminder to just remember to always have that extreme urgency and try our best to pass it on to other people at the door when we're knocking, when we're in the close.
00:11:44
Speaker
So that's a takeaway I got from Mike O'Donnell.
Motivation through Rewards
00:11:48
Speaker
And then two other takeaways I got.
00:11:50
Speaker
We had this, I didn't write down this guy's name, unfortunately, but this Asian guy, I think he was...
00:11:56
Speaker
I don't know, some motivational speaker type guy, but he's talked on goals.
00:12:00
Speaker
And a big takeaway that I got, kind of an aha moment for me at the event, was that we need to attach some killer rewards to any goal we have.
00:12:10
Speaker
We're all great at setting goals.
00:12:11
Speaker
We're all great at, okay, if I don't do this, maybe I have this type of punishment.
00:12:17
Speaker
But he talked about that when we can associate our goals with our reward, we're much more likely to push hard in the moment.
00:12:24
Speaker
If we can get our mind thinking about the reward,
00:12:45
Speaker
So that was really, he told a story about just, he's like, Hey, if you knew, think of a goal you didn't achieve last year.
00:12:53
Speaker
If you knew that if you actually achieve that goal, you are going to get an all paid vacation to Italy, that you're going to get a Bugatti hand delivered to you when you
00:13:04
Speaker
walked off the plane in Italy, and you're going to get chauffeured to all these luxury views, all the best restaurants in Italy.
00:13:12
Speaker
And he just kind of painted this picture of this insane vacation getaway.
00:13:17
Speaker
He's like, if you knew you were going to get that with the last goal,
00:13:38
Speaker
And it reminded me too of an Ed Milet podcast where he talked about every time he hit his goal for his sales when he was doing his, I think it was insurance stuff.
00:13:49
Speaker
I forget what he's selling, World Financial Group, whatever.
00:13:53
Speaker
He would take him and his wife, him and his wife would do a mini two or three day getaway to just like the Ritz Carlton.
00:14:02
Speaker
And this is back, he didn't have that much money yet, but he would reward himself, trip to Ritz Carlton, he'd be around these super successful people.
00:14:09
Speaker
And that was one of the keys to his success.
00:14:12
Speaker
So just an aha moment for me, make sure you were tying your goals together.
00:14:15
Speaker
to our reward reward yourself when you hit these goals and make sure you're actually doing that so you can trigger your brain to think of the reward during the hard moments and then last but not least we had Chris Munizzi he is a regional over at Sunder on the east coast in Florida but this guy he's he's definitely I think one of my favorite speakers in solar and we actually did a podcast with them too at the event so
00:14:41
Speaker
But he just has some great one-liners and ways of helping people remember these takeaways.
00:14:48
Speaker
So you're going to hear on the podcast we did with him.
00:14:50
Speaker
So I'm not going to go over too much.
00:14:52
Speaker
But he just spoke about how we need to be always learning.
00:14:58
Speaker
We need to be constantly making our car a library.
00:15:02
Speaker
We'll be listening to audiobooks.
00:15:03
Speaker
He actually talked about how one of his first managers...
00:15:06
Speaker
he would actually fire people from the cell job.
00:15:10
Speaker
He would go in their cars, see what they're listening to.
00:15:15
Speaker
And if they didn't have an audio book,
00:15:18
Speaker
or like a self-help thing on, then he would fire people over it.
00:15:22
Speaker
So he just talked about that's the level of seriousness we need to have with ourselves, furthering our education and our self-development.
00:15:31
Speaker
Make sure we're always using our car rides as a library, self-development.
00:15:39
Speaker
And then just another thing he spoke about, cut out the kryptonite.
00:15:44
Speaker
Quote he gave from Tony Robbins was like, most people should all over themselves.
00:15:49
Speaker
A little play on words there.
00:15:51
Speaker
Most people should all over themselves.
00:15:53
Speaker
It's like, we should do this.
00:15:55
Speaker
We should do that.
00:15:57
Speaker
But most of us are spending time on things that are kryptonite.
00:16:02
Speaker
And he just gave the example of like, you know, Call of Duty.
00:16:06
Speaker
video games, just eating food, not getting enough sleep, all these things that can be our kryptonite in cells.
00:16:14
Speaker
And if we're not careful, they're going to drastically affect our cells and our outcome in life.
00:16:19
Speaker
And it's all a compound effect.
00:16:21
Speaker
So that was a great reminder.
00:16:22
Speaker
Cool little takeaway I had from it.
Teaching as a Tool for Mastery
00:16:25
Speaker
Okay, so hopefully every event you go to, you should be doing something like this.
00:16:29
Speaker
And like for me, that's actually one of the reasons I have a podcast.
00:16:34
Speaker
And it's so I can teach the things I learn to y'all.
00:16:37
Speaker
Because I know that the more I teach something, the more it allows me to master it.
00:16:42
Speaker
So jokes on you, you thought I was just doing the podcast for your benefit.
00:16:46
Speaker
Listen, it's actually for my benefit.
00:16:50
Speaker
But I think it's a great thing to do.
00:16:52
Speaker
Make sure you actually write down takeaways from events, from podcasts like this.
00:16:57
Speaker
Go teach it to other people because that's one of the best ways to actually digest the material and make the changes and implementations in your solar cells career.
00:17:06
Speaker
So I hope that helped.
00:17:08
Speaker
Go share this with anyone that could use a little boost in their cells today.
00:17:11
Speaker
Leave us a review if you have not.
00:17:14
Speaker
And last but not least, grab your tickets to SolarCon.
00:17:17
Speaker
Grab your tickets to our Solar Referral Bootcamp.
00:17:20
Speaker
Hope to see you all there and we'll see you on the next episode.
00:17:25
Speaker
What's up, solopreneurs?
00:17:26
Speaker
Hope you enjoyed the episode.
00:17:28
Speaker
Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created specifically for you in mind.
00:17:38
Speaker
One of the top questions I get asked on Instagram, on Facebook by our listeners is, Taylor, where should I start?
00:17:46
Speaker
What episodes should I listen to in the podcast?
00:17:48
Speaker
You got too many podcasts, man, because now we have over 200 episodes.
00:17:53
Speaker
So what we've done, we created the top 10 most downloaded, most listened to, and I would say widely accepted, most useful podcasts that we've done here on Solrepreneur.
00:18:06
Speaker
We put them together all in one sheet so you can go, you can hit the ground running, especially if you're new, you do not want to not have this sheet.
00:18:15
Speaker
So go download it right now.
00:18:17
Speaker
It's going to be at top10.solarpreneurs.com.
00:18:21
Speaker
Again, that's top10, the number 10,.solarpreneurs.com.
00:18:26
Speaker
Don't forget the S on solarpreneurs.
00:18:28
Speaker
We will have that in the show notes.
00:18:30
Speaker
Go download it right now.
00:18:32
Speaker
And especially if you have not listened to them, go listen to them and you can re-listen to them.
00:18:37
Speaker
That's going to show you how.
00:18:39
Speaker
So go download it and we'll see you on the other side.
