Introduction and Absence of Co-host
00:00:04
Speaker
This is the Daily Saints pod with Zach and Greg.
00:00:12
Speaker
Good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
00:00:16
Speaker
I am your host, Zach Ingo Finch.
00:00:19
Speaker
Welcome to the Daily Saints pod.
00:00:21
Speaker
There is no illustrious co-host today.
00:00:23
Speaker
Gregoriel is out of action.
00:00:26
Speaker
He is unfortunately come down with illness.
00:00:30
Speaker
If anyone listened to our last pod, they could probably tell he was on his way.
00:00:34
Speaker
And yeah, he's just a bit wiped out for today.
January Transfer Window Overview
00:00:36
Speaker
And we're going to be talking about transfers today, which is a little bit exciting because, you know, we're now in the January window.
00:00:41
Speaker
Shame there isn't anything super exciting actually happening, but don't worry, I've got enough information to at least get us through a bit of time.
00:00:49
Speaker
So quick other note, quick things to talk about to start with.
00:00:53
Speaker
There is probably going to be an episode next week where we talk about player power.
00:00:58
Speaker
And we've been kind of asked about this, I think, on Spotify.
00:01:02
Speaker
Greg said there was a comment.
00:01:04
Speaker
Alfie House basically put out a tweet about the players that he thinks that would be worth keeping towards the end of the season.
00:01:12
Speaker
There are some notable omissions in that.
00:01:14
Speaker
Some people have read between lines.
00:01:16
Speaker
Ugly Insight did a whole piece on whether or not it's to do with player power and there are cliques, etc., which there are bound to be with any social group.
00:01:26
Speaker
That's just kind of how large groups work.
00:01:29
Speaker
But yeah, we kind of share our own thoughts.
00:01:31
Speaker
And I think anyone that's long-term listeners of the show will probably know where we lie on it.
00:01:36
Speaker
Yeah, I just wanted to kind of like brief that out before we dive straight into transfers.
00:01:40
Speaker
So I'm going to talk about staff as well, just because, you know, rumours abound.
00:01:44
Speaker
And we've also had a new incoming who, so far, the coverage on this show has been...
00:01:52
Speaker
me being like, and who even is this guy we brought in as an assistant whilst raging at the 4-0 loss to Middlesbrough.
00:01:58
Speaker
Terrible game to start with, but apparently he joined basically like two, three hours before kickoff, I think they announced it.
00:02:04
Speaker
So not really his fault.
00:02:06
Speaker
But yeah, we'll start at the top.
Leicester City's Technical Director Concerns
00:02:08
Speaker
So Andy Goldie is supposedly the leading contender to be Leicester City's new technical director.
00:02:14
Speaker
So this is a bit of a problem because he's been in charge of the academy for a while.
00:02:18
Speaker
And it would be a big blow considering,
00:02:21
Speaker
The Academy is one of...
00:02:24
Speaker
sort of our best assets, right?
00:02:26
Speaker
Remove the Sports Republic lenses or whatever.
00:02:29
Speaker
The academy has always been a thing that's been associated with Southampton and, you know, the players that have been associated with it.
00:02:35
Speaker
And most recently, obviously, the Tyler Dibbling moving to Everton for a substantial amount of money, I think it's the most that was ever paid from an academy player.
00:02:45
Speaker
And we've also still got people like Cam Bragg and Jay Robinson coming through the academy's ranks into our first team.
00:02:53
Speaker
And some of that success is going to be down to the people running it, obviously.
00:02:56
Speaker
So to lose them would be a bit of a problem.
00:02:58
Speaker
And it also continues to be a, there's been an issue of the Sports Republic reign of like when they've got people, they've lost them, right?
00:03:06
Speaker
The only person that they've managed to hold on to
00:03:09
Speaker
amongst rumours so far has been sports and that's because the man himself is like yeah too too invested in this project to like want to go elsewhere at the moment doesn't mean forever though but yeah like looking at sort of Jason Wilcox he's having his own nightmare time at Manchester United and another kind of people that have left over time it's going to be it's going to be less than ideal if he if he moves on
00:03:31
Speaker
But according to The Athletic, he said he is ready to move on to a hands-on role at a first team.
00:03:36
Speaker
So clearly he wants an opportunity to do something outside of youth football, I guess.
00:03:42
Speaker
Yeah, I think it would be...
00:03:45
Speaker
more impactful long-term than it would be in the immediate forte.
00:03:50
Speaker
But we've only really got back to having the Academy of Old quite recently, right, where finally the better prospects have come through.
00:03:59
Speaker
And we've had two years on the bounce now where we've had players transition directly into the first team.
00:04:04
Speaker
So I don't think that it's great for the club, but we'll just have to wait and see because so far we don't know.
00:04:11
Speaker
And I guess we'll go
Damien Downs Loan Move
00:04:12
Speaker
Right, so moving swiftly on to one of the big talking points, transfers out.
00:04:17
Speaker
Damien Downs has moved on loan to Hamburg.
00:04:22
Speaker
So this has all been confirmed now.
00:04:24
Speaker
There are pictures.
00:04:25
Speaker
This is all posted from...
00:04:32
Speaker
As confirmed by Pletti Goal, Florian Plettenberg, who covers a lot of the German football side of things, he'll be covering a transfer we talk about later as well.
00:04:41
Speaker
They have an option to buy at €9 million to €10 million with up to €12 million possible if bonuses are met.
00:04:50
Speaker
he will have a €500,000 loan fee dependent on appearances.
00:04:56
Speaker
And during his time at Hamburg, he will have his full salary covered.
00:05:01
Speaker
So we've got some opinions on that, I'm sure.
00:05:03
Speaker
When it comes to downs, it's a difficult runway because when he first started and came in, we had that pre-season game where he scored a good goal and everyone was kind of excited.
00:05:15
Speaker
And then he's just kind of not...
00:05:18
Speaker
Like, sort of coming at the end of games, not really been able to make an impact, not been able to sort of do the role that the club kind of expected him to do.
00:05:28
Speaker
And that is to kind of play a Ross Stewart, like Paul Noachiu style striker.
00:05:34
Speaker
And somebody put in comments to Alfie House that in actuality, he's more suited to like an Archer sort of Armstrong role, right?
00:05:43
Speaker
Which Alfie agreed with.
00:05:44
Speaker
But also Greg has been saying that since we signed him, basically, is that we kind of seem to be playing him a lot differently to what we should be.
00:05:54
Speaker
And that's probably hampered his ability to grow.
00:05:57
Speaker
And I do really feel sorry for the lad because when he first joined us, obviously we spent a lot of our time
00:06:03
Speaker
absorbing all of the media around Saints just for the podcast.
00:06:08
Speaker
And so because of that, we watch pretty much everything that comes out.
00:06:11
Speaker
And there was an interview with two American ex-international, so we'll see, you know, interviewing an American guy who's got his opportunity to come play in England, really excited to play for the club, really excited to get back to the Premier League because there was still, I think, far more optimism at that time that we're going to come back.
00:06:30
Speaker
And yeah, he was just really excited to be able to showcase his stuff.
00:06:34
Speaker
Unfortunately, that's just not been the case.
00:06:35
Speaker
And part of that was obviously he wanted to get more game time, get more goals to remain in contention for the World Cup.
00:06:42
Speaker
Because obviously he was an international footballer.
00:06:45
Speaker
He was being picked by Pochettino up until he just dropped out of the first team entirely.
00:06:51
Speaker
And then obviously picked up an injury even later on.
00:06:53
Speaker
And it just hasn't been seen since.
00:06:55
Speaker
So yeah, it's just, I kind of feel bad for me, but I think that Greg summed it up quite nicely when we were talking about it off air, which is that sometimes transfers like this just don't work out.
00:07:07
Speaker
Ben Burris and Diaz is like another perfect example of that, right?
00:07:12
Speaker
is that probably due to him being, I don't know, played out of position, not really sort of kicking on, you know, although I think it's different with Diaz because he obviously had like his mate in Adam Armstrong here.
00:07:26
Speaker
But even then, that wasn't like that partnership never really clicked either.
00:07:31
Speaker
And, you know, he really struggled before moving on and it's carved out a little bit.
00:07:35
Speaker
better time for himself at Derby, like picked up a few goals, which, you know, is more to be said for his time here.
00:07:42
Speaker
And it's almost like a similar thing.
00:07:43
Speaker
So the other thing to bear in mind is out of all of the summer transfers we had, he's kind of what the only one that I would say hasn't worked out properly, right?
00:07:53
Speaker
Like quasi does good.
00:07:55
Speaker
Yander, fantastic signing fellows, fantastic signing.
00:07:59
Speaker
Azaz, when he's on a hot streak, scored goal after goal after goal.
00:08:06
Speaker
Sienza is something special.
00:08:07
Speaker
So to kind of only have one player out of all of those that hasn't quite kicked on, he now has a chance to kind of revitalise his career in a place he's far more familiar.
00:08:17
Speaker
And good luck to him.
00:08:19
Speaker
I don't think I'd expect to see him back as a Southampton player.
00:08:23
Speaker
I just have a feeling that regardless of what happens at the end of the season, he'll probably end up.
00:08:26
Speaker
going back to Germany.
00:08:27
Speaker
But, you know, for his sake, I hope that he starts the bad goals and gets himself back into the US team.
00:08:34
Speaker
But it is what it is.
00:08:36
Speaker
So, au revoir and farewell.
00:08:38
Speaker
Moving swiftly on, Ryan Fraser.
Ryan Fraser Transfer Rumors
00:08:41
Speaker
Now, this isn't actually a transfer out story.
00:08:43
Speaker
This is a bit of a weird one.
00:08:45
Speaker
He was rumoured to be joining Western Sydney Wanderers, right?
00:08:49
Speaker
And then all of a sudden, Alfie Haas was like, nah, he's not joining them.
00:08:53
Speaker
And then we've basically had nothing else since.
00:08:55
Speaker
Was a bit of a strange one to me, but he's only got, I think, six months left on his contract.
00:08:58
Speaker
He's kind of in a similar boat to Joe Arriba, right?
00:09:01
Speaker
Where he will be going probably at the end of the season if we don't offer him anything.
00:09:07
Speaker
But I think a couple of people have celebrated that, I think, probably, from my opinion, in the wrong.
00:09:13
Speaker
He's been one of the few players this season that stepped up into places that we wouldn't have expected him to, right?
00:09:19
Speaker
Where he's stepping in for fellows and pretty much anything that he's been given, he's done.
00:09:24
Speaker
Has he done them great?
00:09:26
Speaker
Probably not, because he's been played out of position quite a few times.
00:09:30
Speaker
considering when he joined us, there was a lot of conversation around his attitude and what type of player he was and, you know, oh, he's going to stab you in the back eventually and this and the other.
00:09:39
Speaker
And then a lot of people kind of felt that when Russell Martin went, right?
00:09:43
Speaker
And he wasn't really picked at all by Juric and it was just that he preferred Solomar over Fraser and never really played him anywhere else.
00:09:50
Speaker
And then obviously we expected him to maybe go over the summer and then early games under Will Steele, he was picked quite a lot.
00:09:55
Speaker
And he was one of the few players I'd say put in effort every game he was in.
00:09:59
Speaker
So, yeah, I think when the time comes, it'll be sad to see him go.
00:10:04
Speaker
And I think he has done a solid job for us while being here.
00:10:07
Speaker
But again, if he's out of contract soon and he wants to move on, that's totally by his right.
00:10:12
Speaker
And I also think that we probably need to start replacing some of the old guard cohort with fresh blood that aren't, I guess, don't have the emotional baggage of like the last couple of seasons.
00:10:26
Speaker
Again, we'll save that for our player power episode.
00:10:28
Speaker
So that's it for transfers out.
00:10:31
Speaker
So let's talk about transfers in.
Coaching Changes and Ben Garner's Role
00:10:33
Speaker
Ben Garner, who is our new coach or new assistant coach to Tonda Eckert.
00:10:38
Speaker
So yeah, he joined and I feel bad for the fact that he's just managed a couple of second-rate league one sides and this, that, and the other.
00:10:47
Speaker
George Roush-Eulian did an excellent article on who he is, which means I'll probably not really bother doing a profile episode because all of the information is there.
00:10:55
Speaker
It's worth giving it a read.
00:10:56
Speaker
It will be in the description.
00:10:58
Speaker
But I'll just give you an outline that's covered in that article.
00:11:01
Speaker
So a 45-year-old coach who has played a role developing Zaha, Klein, and Victor Moses.
00:11:08
Speaker
He has a reputation for helping younger players and a reputation for playing attacking football.
00:11:13
Speaker
So he would also, when he was at West Brom, would basically lead coaching from Monday to Thursday, Wednesday.
00:11:20
Speaker
And then Tony Poulos would come in and do tactics on Friday.
00:11:22
Speaker
So he got a lot behind the scenes, right?
00:11:25
Speaker
He's had previous roles at Colchester, Charlton, Swindon and Bristol Rovers.
00:11:29
Speaker
And again, Lambert gave him his seat of approval when working under him at West Brom.
00:11:34
Speaker
Although these are comments from 2019.
00:11:36
Speaker
So who knows what seven years would be to a man.
00:11:40
Speaker
In footballing terms, that can be an incredibly long time.
00:11:43
Speaker
Coaching terms, maybe not so much, especially if you ask somebody like Mr. Warnock.
00:11:47
Speaker
So it is what it is.
00:11:49
Speaker
But again, I kind of feel bad that, you know, he took a, got a bit of a drive-by from me in my big run post-Middlesborough, right?
00:11:58
Speaker
Because that game made me cross.
00:12:00
Speaker
I'm still cross about it.
00:12:02
Speaker
But obviously he was announced like two or three hours before.
00:12:04
Speaker
So we've had absolutely zero influence and maybe having an experienced head around Ponder will help.
00:12:10
Speaker
It's difficult because I also think that apparently that completes his coaching setup.
00:12:16
Speaker
And I just don't see the coaching setup we currently have as,
00:12:21
Speaker
having the ability to get us where supposedly Sports Republic wants to be.
00:12:27
Speaker
And this might be to do with Spor's sort of weird trying to set up his own coaching team made out of various different people that don't know each other, right?
00:12:36
Speaker
We saw that early on with Will still not really bringing in any of his own coaching staff apart from one coach that he worked with in France.
00:12:45
Speaker
Everyone else sort of being separately interviewed.
00:12:48
Speaker
And it's going to be difficult, I'm sure.
00:12:51
Speaker
I think people wanted more excitement and pizzazz.
00:12:56
Speaker
That was never going to happen, I think, with coaching staff.
00:12:58
Speaker
Unless all of a sudden they're bringing in really, really well-known big names that we'd expect.
00:13:05
Speaker
I just don't see how that would happen.
00:13:07
Speaker
No one was that excited with Trollope, despite the fact that he also got a team promoted to the Premier League, which probably...
00:13:14
Speaker
But admittedly, whatever problems Luton are having now, he is now back in the Premier League coaching a team that are going through significantly worse circumstances than we did last year.
00:13:25
Speaker
So yeah, it's a bit of a weird one because in one sense, I can understand the argument of it's not exciting.
00:13:34
Speaker
He doesn't seem to have the experience for what we want.
00:13:37
Speaker
The flip side of that is that I think we are going to struggle with the position we're in to bring in the types of backroom staff that
00:13:47
Speaker
people would want.
00:13:48
Speaker
And then there's also the underlying argument to all of this, which is, does it matter if somebody behind the scenes is saying we need to play a specific way, we need to do a specific thing?
00:13:59
Speaker
Does it really matter who's there as long as they can get the players to do what the players do?
00:14:05
Speaker
So hey-ho, everyone can have their own opinion on it, but we'll see if it makes a significant difference, right?
00:14:11
Speaker
Like for some people, they said that Danny Roel was the brains behind Hasenhutl.
00:14:17
Speaker
who knows what will happen going forward.
Midfield Considerations and Issa Dunbia Rumors
00:14:20
Speaker
So moving on to a player, Issa Dunbia.
00:14:25
Speaker
He is a 22-year-old and plays for Serie B-side Venezia.
00:14:30
Speaker
He is a right-footed central midfielder.
00:14:34
Speaker
We have been linked with him over this window.
00:14:37
Speaker
Ugly Inside has written about it.
00:14:39
Speaker
The 72 has written about it.
00:14:41
Speaker
There's not really any other links other than that.
00:14:44
Speaker
But apparently we're after one, which seems very odd because it doesn't really look like it's a space we need reinforcing.
00:14:51
Speaker
Like if you said to any Saints fan, what do we need?
00:14:55
Speaker
Most wouldn't say another central midfielder.
00:14:57
Speaker
If somebody goes, so potentially if you end up having like, say, there were Rebo, Flynn Downs, because those are the only ones I could really see realistically going, you know, maybe it would be worth having something else.
00:15:09
Speaker
we're not really bringing in crazy experience either, right?
00:15:12
Speaker
We're once again looking at sort of young players.
00:15:15
Speaker
However, he is described as a very physically strong midfielder with excellent timing of insertion, but who could certainly grow in terms of scoring, who guarantees in all respects reliability and security in midfield, according to La Giovanni Italia.
00:15:32
Speaker
So, yeah, all of that will be in the description if you want to have a look at the articles yourself.
00:15:38
Speaker
He has made a total of 44 appearances for his club with four goals and two assists and three appearances for the Italy under-21s.
00:15:46
Speaker
Supposedly, we are in competition with Club Bruges for his signature.
00:15:50
Speaker
I would say we're probably slightly more exciting prospects.
00:15:56
Speaker
But then Club Bruges, we've also got international, sorry, European football.
00:16:00
Speaker
it just depends whether he gets into their first team or anything, right?
00:16:02
Speaker
So we'll have to see.
00:16:03
Speaker
It just seems a bit of a weird one for me.
00:16:06
Speaker
Like, unless it's literally a siding for the future, the idea of us getting another central midfielder, so you could theoretically end up with Kaspianda, Flynn Downs, Shea Charles, Oriol Romelu, Cam Bragg, Joe Uribo, Matsuki can play there as well.
00:16:24
Speaker
And then you're looking at, like, sort of right-backs, and it's like,
00:16:28
Speaker
Wiggers, probably more, in my opinion, attacking reinforcements.
00:16:32
Speaker
But hey-ho, if we pick up that, it'll be slightly exciting anyway.
00:16:37
Speaker
I think it'll be a good player from what I've seen so far.
00:16:39
Speaker
But yeah, if you fancy checking him out, as I said, all of the stuff will be in the show description.
00:16:45
Speaker
And now on to the one that everybody cares about.
Goalkeeper Signing: Daniel Perrott
00:16:49
Speaker
So we're potentially picking up a new goalkeeper, Daniel Perrott.
00:16:54
Speaker
He is set to join Southampton.
00:16:57
Speaker
He has apparently now finished his medical.
00:17:01
Speaker
It was done yesterday.
00:17:02
Speaker
And that is according to Florian Plettenberg or Plety Gold on X. We will pay a £400,000 loan fee.
00:17:15
Speaker
And we will retain an €8 million option to buy, which would be really, really good if he turns out to be really, really good.
00:17:22
Speaker
Goalkeepers is a thing that me and Greg have discussed a lot.
00:17:30
Speaker
Again, I still think that we should have never let Ramsdale go on loan.
00:17:35
Speaker
If he wanted to leave, we should have just let him leave.
00:17:38
Speaker
Because clearly, by the looks of the time he's having at Newcastle, he doesn't want to come back.
00:17:42
Speaker
He seems to absolutely love the club.
00:17:43
Speaker
He seems to be in all of the shots in the media and stuff.
00:17:47
Speaker
And he's now getting a bit of game time finally after starting on the bench quite a lot.
00:17:51
Speaker
However, it meant that we were stuck with this battle between Bizzunu and McCarthy.
00:17:59
Speaker
Bizzunu, who started in goal for Steele,
00:18:03
Speaker
Didn't do that great.
00:18:06
Speaker
McCarthy was swapped in.
00:18:07
Speaker
McCarthy equally didn't do as great.
00:18:09
Speaker
The argument over whether we should put Baz in goal or McCarthy in goal, the constant, oh, well, McCarthy would have saved that or, oh, no, Baz would have saved that.
00:18:18
Speaker
And in reality, I think most people have decided that neither are good enough to be a first-choice goalkeeper.
00:18:23
Speaker
You know, maybe Baz will mature into the role over time.
00:18:26
Speaker
Maybe he just needs more exposure.
00:18:28
Speaker
Maybe another loan deal will help.
00:18:30
Speaker
McCarthy is getting on a little bit now at this point and knows, you know, probably it's not going to be the first choice here.
00:18:38
Speaker
And then on top of that, you've got the fact that we then got like a third goalkeeper to just like, I don't know, make up the numbers with George Long, right?
00:18:45
Speaker
Because obviously we needed a reserve goalkeeper just in case.
00:18:48
Speaker
But now there hasn't been anything about us sending him back yet as of when we're recording.
00:18:54
Speaker
Because if not, then technically we have Ramsdale, Azunu, McCarthy, George Long,
00:19:00
Speaker
Dylan Moody and Daniel Perrott.
00:19:03
Speaker
So it's a big cohort of goalkeepers.
00:19:07
Speaker
But it's exciting.
00:19:08
Speaker
I think it's finally a thing that we've all kind of known we've needed for ages.
00:19:13
Speaker
I don't really understand why it's taken so long for the powers that be to realise.
00:19:18
Speaker
And again, maybe they just gave, maybe they wanted to give powers a chance.
00:19:21
Speaker
Maybe after he came up from injury, maybe he was more up to it.
00:19:23
Speaker
Maybe he trained really, really well.
00:19:25
Speaker
And then obviously the reality of him in it and just the statistic behind it is that just like he's not as good as we need him to be.
00:19:32
Speaker
So we're going to have potentially a new name in between, you know, a new person in between the sticks now.
00:19:39
Speaker
And hopefully he'll start to stop some goals and at least we won't end up losing 4-0, etc.
00:19:47
Speaker
But I do feel bad for Baz because if that ends up being his last game for us, it kind of very much reminds me of a Angus Gunn situation where Angus Gunn's last game was like the 9-0 to Leicester, right, before he moved on.
00:20:02
Speaker
But I don't know if that's necessarily the case.
00:20:04
Speaker
I think he's still a young guy.
00:20:05
Speaker
He's still got lots of time to develop and learn.
00:20:08
Speaker
I just think for the time being, we do need an experienced goalkeeper.
00:20:11
Speaker
And hopefully we will find that in Daniel Peretz.
00:20:14
Speaker
So moving quickly on, there isn't much left to talk about.
00:20:19
Speaker
I saw some tenuous links elsewhere to Callum Wilson and other people that are now free agents.
Transfer Window Reflections and Expectations
00:20:25
Speaker
And again, that's more rumours than anything else.
00:20:27
Speaker
So I'm not going to substantially back that.
00:20:30
Speaker
But it's been a bit of a dry January so far for us when it comes to transfers.
00:20:36
Speaker
But one in, one out is probably going to be more exciting than it was last year, right?
00:20:42
Speaker
We haven't heard anything else about any of the players on loan.
00:20:45
Speaker
We've heard nothing about whether or not Ben Maritain-Diaz will stay at Derby or go elsewhere because he was rumoured to be going to the MLS or potentially further afield.
00:20:55
Speaker
We've also not heard anything about James Bree, who's still on loan at Charlton, same with a couple of other players, right?
00:21:01
Speaker
Charlie Taylor, Will Smallbone, who I know Smallbone's out, long-term injury still, to my knowledge.
00:21:07
Speaker
So yeah, we've not really heard anything else.
00:21:08
Speaker
Joe Aribo, who I would have expected to hear from sort of rumours from day one, not heard anything at all so far either.
Episode Conclusion and Social Media Plugs
00:21:14
Speaker
So I guess we'll just have to watch this space and hopefully when we come round to talk about transfers next time around, there'll be something a little bit more exciting.
00:21:22
Speaker
But for those that have stayed with me, thank you very much.
00:21:25
Speaker
We are the Daily Saints pod, recently independent.
00:21:29
Speaker
So yeah, give us a like and a follow on all the socials.
00:21:32
Speaker
Facebook, X, Twitter, the everything app, whatever you want to call it.
00:21:36
Speaker
Blue Sky, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram.
00:21:40
Speaker
We will be back tomorrow to talk about our game against Dronkasten.
00:21:44
Speaker
I'm sure Greg will be back to his optimistic, buzzing self.
00:21:48
Speaker
I, however, will not be.
00:21:53
Speaker
We'll see what happens.
00:21:55
Speaker
But yeah, hopefully by that side, we'll have a new goalkeeper in the squad and things will start to look up again.
00:22:00
Speaker
But as we're all aware, everything does feel very fragile and tensions rising.
00:22:08
Speaker
Thank you all for listening and we'll see you in the next one.
00:22:17
Speaker
This is the Daily Saints pod with Zach and Greg.
