Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Brighton Podcast. It's your boy Jamie G back on hosting duties with the man himself, back from doing God's work. Blessings, Chavamba. Bless. How was Zambia?

Brighton's Ongoing Struggles

00:00:27
blessings
Yeah, Zambia was good. Nice to get away, to be honest, but happy to be back. Slightly disappointing that I've been away to a different continent and yet Brighton have still not won a game. um But hopefully our fortunes will change.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the entire month of november of December without a win. And we've gone into we've rounded off perfectly by yet again not getting a win in our final game of the new of the year. So

Aston Villa Match Review

00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's perfect. That makes it no win in seven games now with that draw to Aston Villa that we will be talking about in today's podcast.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been a tough run of form, but yeah yesterday was a tougher team than we've played in recent recent weeks. ah The toughest team we've played over the last seven games, to be honest, and it was a draw that I actually predicted that we were going to get. I said this game has draw written all over, and I think we said that in the ah preview podcast. What did you make of the result, Bless?
00:01:34
blessings
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought we'd lose this one. I mean, like, you look at Villa's side, they're a very good team, to be honest. And they started the year quite well. And that excuse of, oh, yeah, they're tired. We might nick a a point. It's gone now that they were. Champions League football was not on at the moment, so everyone's sort of in the same boat in terms of the amount of games they've played. And for us to go there and get a point, I think,
00:02:01
blessings
I think I'll take that, to be honest. um Considering the type of games that we're coming off the back from, I think I'll take that.

Aston Villa's Form and Tactics

00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah um i'm not right i think oh i'm happy with the result as well in terms of we've gone to villa park and their form has started to pick up a little bit. They've dropped to a couple of results here and there, but they went through a patch where I think they couldn't win in about seven games. They went through a similar patch than we are now. ah They started picking up results recently, although they did lose to Newcastle, obviously 3-0. They did have 10 men the whole time, but they beat Man City, they'd beaten Leipzig, and their biggest problem was coming off
00:02:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
like coming after Champions League games so this was a difficult time to play them when they don't have Champions League football mid-week and we've gone there without them having Champions League football.
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So i'm I'm not too disappointed with the result as well. It's also the fact that they peppered us.

Brighton's Defensive Analysis

00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
the The stats show that they had way more shots, they had a lot more possession as well. So they were much the better team, I felt.
00:03:18
blessings
yeah i think it's um it was another astute performance from like defensively from hurtsler and how we lined them up initially i was concerned going into the game looking at the lineups and just trying to figure out you know the matchups and physically villa are much much stronger like if you look at their back lines so i was a little bit concerned because we've got some scrawny players yeah So I was a bit concerned on that on that front. But I thought ah thought we battled well and held our own. Yeah, we did have to respect them a little bit and give up um probably a bit more of the ball than we we probably want. But at the moment, we just need to be, you know, we need to get some results and sort of get on a good run again, I think. So, yeah, performance wise, you just take the point, I think, for this one.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah and we did actually start the game with the goal, ah we went 1-0 up. Taught me through the goal, it was a classic, your favourite player, Lewis Dunk, with the his favourite, the long ball, straight up to Pedro and I've got to say it on Villa's behalf. Shocking defending. Letting the ball bounce, first of all. Two defenders being there, not being able to clear it. And then Joe Pedro just hitting his behind and then a Dhingra pouncing on it. Lovely finish by Dhingra as well.

Debate on Dunk's Pass Intent

00:04:40
blessings
Yeah it's a bit of a weird one because i was thinking it I was thinking after it, is that a good pass or is he just pumped it up there and basically lets see what happens.
00:04:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
launched it here.
00:04:49
blessings
But yeah I was a bit confused by the village ah the Villa defence like Conza has got to deal with that to be honest. like You're up against the Al Pedro he's probably not going to win it but you've let it bounce it's 50-50.
00:05:01
blessings
um But yeah, it's nice to see a dinger on the score sheet is a good finish I think as well Showed a bit of composure just to drag the ball back inside and wrap his foot around it So now as' ah I'll take that I think I'm gonna go with dunk good pass Huge
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
he said of course you are you're in the dunk camp whereas the rest of us want him gone hey i've got to say also i felt ego did all right yeah in the game i know you've got a bone to pick with him later on for the second goal but throughout the game i thought he did actually not not too bad a job so he's still in contention to take that center back spot hopefully uh off dunk uh if he does play there again um but yeah i think Another thing I want to mention about the goal is Adingra coming onto his right foot, playing off the left, starting over Metoma, and it's he's actually shown what he can do when he does start on that left-hand side, rather than playing right-wing back, which is where he's subjected to play a couple times already this season.
00:06:07
blessings
Yeah it was a big call to be honest I was a bit surprised to see Metoma out but um we we need some freshening in that team and I think in the past we have maybe criticized some of the some of the rotations and not really seen the ones in like the in left wing, Metoma has always sort of been there so it's nice to freshen it up because I really felt like Metoma was going to kick on after those couple of goals but he he really hasn't so it's good that you know you got to keep it competitive and you know bring other players in because they are there to be used so yeah and I'm happy for Dinger to be honest
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, especially when you've got like, like Brighton do, they've got so many ah wingers and attacking players that just freshen it up. Because Metoma, like we've been saying on this podcast a couple of times, he's going through a bit of a drought where he's not, he he's having good games and good flashes in games with his touch, being direct, running at people, being dangerous. But goals and assists wise,
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's nowhere near the level he was a couple of seasons ago or when he first started bursting on the scene. ah So he's good to see a dhingra come into that position and I was also shocked to actually see him make that decision. The only way, the only reason I could kind of think he would make that decision is Metoma's not renowned for defensive work and he's more like a luxury the player you leave up there, hope for him to be on the counter or to throw the ball out wide to him and then he can get us out there. Whereas, I felt Hertzler knew this was going to be a game where we would need to defend well and a dingo is a bit more of that pest.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
a bit more willing to make those runs track but track back. And especially when you've got Eagle playing left back, he needs as much help as he can get when he's not playing his preferred position. So that's the only reason I could kind of think he would go for that that method or play a Dhingra instead of Matoma. Or it could just be resting because over over this period, so many games come thick and fast. Maybe Matoma needed did the rest.

Brighton's Squad Rotation Strategy

00:08:17
blessings
yeah i thought yeah i agree with you i think um yeah i think it i think it's just a case of rotation and freshening it up um ah yeah like i say at the moment we just need a result so i think he's looking at everyone like please who's going to pick up some form someone needs to get some form we've not had an informed player in ages so you might as well give give everyone a go um
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:43
blessings
And also before we go to our break actually, honourable shout out to Solonmarch back now, which is good.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Good to see his name back. ah And just to my point, by the way, ah I've looked up the Idinga defensive stats from yesterday. I am a genius, I've got to say. ah Recoveries, six. ah Interceptions, two. Ground jewels, one. Five. I won't tell you how out of how many that was. like It was out of 12, but still five ones. That's a positive and even a header. There we go.
00:09:17
blessings
know i I was going to disagree with you about the these Adingua's defensive prowess.
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but
00:09:24
blessings
I think Matoma works quite hard defensively, but I'm glad it didn't because you've got the stats ready to shoot at me.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Backed it up, mate.
00:09:30
blessings
It would have been tough that.
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And on that note, we will be going to the Zencast to add.

Controversial Penalty Decision

00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And after the break, we'll be talking about the two unfortunate Aston Villa goals.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with a Daily Brighton podcast. Bless, there's some controversy to discuss. The first Aston Villa goal. I mean, was it a penalty at all? Or have we been hard done by?
00:10:32
blessings
In real time, when I first saw it, I was fuming. I couldn't really believe what I was watching, but I think it's one of them where hindsight, if that goes against you, you don't get a pen for that, then yeah, you'd be fuming as well. So it's like, in those situations, it's just sort of about whatever player gets the ball first, whatever happens after that. Do you know what I mean? It's just a difficult situation. It's unlucky. Some might say it's a bit soft, but I think it's a penalty, really.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm actually in the in the other camp, because i so I don't think it's a penalty.
00:11:05
blessings
Oh wow.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's so harsh. I mean, he's gone to kick the ball, he's gone to clear it, and sure, he might go through. but First time watching it as well, like you, fuming at it, thought, what's he trying to look at and what's going to VAR here?
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because it looked like a massive scramble in the box. The ball gets cleared, and then... ah he Sure, I'm actually looking... No, that's not a pen. I'm sorry. Like, I'm looking in real time for our listeners.
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He's scraped him. He's even tried pulling out from clearing it and he's sure he's tapped him a tiny little bit. But no way. No way. He's not in possession of the ball. What happened to that rule?
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got to be in possession of the ball. He's not in possession of the ball. He's just got there first.
00:11:56
blessings
yeah but yeah but
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
The ball is in the air of 50-50 to be won. They've both tried winning it. One person's tapped it with a toe and the other one's pulled out of challenge and Pedro's given away a penalty for that.
00:12:08
blessings
Well like you said, he's got there first. like it's It's tough.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're joking.
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just...
00:12:13
blessings
But if he gets there first, he's been ticked.
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nah. I'm not having it. And actually that came,

Brighton's Defensive Lapses

00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the corner, the corner that it came from, came from another penalty claim that Aston Villa were trying to get, which was Van Hecker, Morgan Rogers, fair play to him. We did say, watch out for the danger man of Morgan Rogers in the preview. ah He had Van Hecker on toast for this little interchange.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
makes him Van Hecker great recovery tackle slides and I think that's where the ball goes out for the corner they tried getting a penalty for that realized they weren't getting a penalty for that so then they called for this one absolutely absolutely not a penalty so yeah that's and it also ah when the corner is cleared great save by the Brogan when it goes out to Dina who has a shot hard and low so we cleared the danger and then they came back and gave a penalty Hard done by, I feel.
00:13:16
blessings
yeah now very soft pen to be honest yeah
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
up Second goal now. This is your the one that you actually have an issue with, isn't it? ah Came from yet another corner. We apparently are as bad as Man United at defending corners. I don't know what what that's about. With this one, we get clear once again. And as we get it clear, the ball gets put back into the box. Morgan Rogers, acres of space. Lovely finish.
00:13:44
blessings
yeah I'm going to break this down into two parts because the first part you've just reminded me and ah I really hope we don't get into this but conceding from corners you they need to patch up because if that becomes a problem then we're going to be getting killed because a lot of teams at the moment are
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
that
00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Love a corner.
00:14:03
blessings
love a corner and it's affecting ah obviously because it obviously if they have a team score it affects the game so much because everyone's scared and it it just causes havoc and you could be dominating the game and then can see from a corner eye I so keep seeing that this season I think this Premier League season is literally crowned by set pieces and quarters at the moment so we need to need to make sure we don't get in a rut of conceited silly silly corners um and defending them badly and for the goal absolutely shocking i think that defending is criminal six seven players boar watching
00:14:44
blessings
I mean, where where is the left back? Who is covering that space? You know Morgan Rogers is probably one of their but their best attackers. like Who's looking at him? Everyone's just staring at the ball. It's shocking. Everyone moves up. and he he's got ah It's a great finish, but my God, he's got a lot of time. He's chested it. He's had a look. He's rolled it in. this you know Someone's got to be there with him at least to make a challenge whilst he's trying to chest it. You can't just get a free chest in the box and roll it in.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i've got to say i think the so you you're calling out left back so obviously ego i've got to say because it's from a corner ego is on the back post so he's yeah ah in my mind this is coming
00:15:28
blessings
Who's defending that front post then? Was it Lamptey?
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was uh well this is where i'm gonna get onto it so as a fullback you know that's that's not my responsibility as a fellow left back if i'm on the back post you know that's uh the left back position is not mine anymore uh how quick do you want him to move the poor bloke he's only just started running uh so the my actual issue is
00:15:45
blessings
Get back into position there. The ball's been cleared.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's got it's Joe Pedro again he's assisted too and he's also at fault for both goals technically because Joe Pedro is the one on the front post he sees the ball get cleared then he is off like he's expecting i like a fair play a good striker his instincts should be let's now counter let's break up the pitch And that's what Jal Pedro does. He's the one on the front post. so Then he sees the ball kind of up in the air, breaking further and further out. And then he's thinking, oh, let me get on my bike.
00:16:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's where they, unfortunately, play the ball into that space.
00:16:34
blessings
Yeah.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And CSO is another player to blame. I believe it was in CSO who is also in that kind of area. He's slower than Jal Pedro. He's like in the middle. He's not sure whether to sprint forward with Jal Pedro for the counter or to stay back and mark his area, which is what he should have done, by the way.
00:16:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And instead he's in this no man's land of, what do I do? three of them are behind him and then Morgan Rogers, like I said, great touch, great finish.
00:17:05
blessings
yeah i think we've also got to have a look at that clearance i think it's a dinger it's um it's coming up in the air but he's kicked it straight up straight up and it's gone straight back down like oh come on put your foot through it uh not upwards he he's fully smashed it it's got up
00:17:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah yeah yeah Honestly, the ball was in the air for about five seconds as well. I swear to God, everyone was just watching it. He smashed it, mate. He smashed it high and not far, which is not not ideal. I'm unlucky at Ingra. So there are two people that were responsible for our first goal.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
were also responsible for their third goal. So not not my good not good things. ah After this break, we did

Lamptey's Equalizer and Impact

00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
level things up and we will be talking about our next goal.
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the Daily Brighton podcast. Bless, we did actually manage to level the game. Wow, now I feel like it's... I was expecting the worst, especially because they were peppering us. that I feel like the substitutions did make a difference when they came on as well. We brought on the likes of Metoma, Ruta. They did liven things up a little bit, which was good to see as well, um because we have kind of seen some flat performances from our substitutes recently, like ah but they liven things up. And then we managed to get the equalizer. What did you make of the Lamptey finish?
00:19:01
blessings
Yeah, I think it was a great finish. um It's a nice, neat play from Matoma. We know what he can do. And I'll see Jean Pedro with a flick back inside. But Lamptey, I don't know where all of these goals are coming from, to be honest.
00:19:13
blessings
I think it's a shame we haven't got Joe Richardson on here.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Exactly.
00:19:17
blessings
He's a Lamptey correspondent. But um yeah, really good finish. like I'm surprised he's found himself in the edge of the box. And I didn't really have him as a decent ball strike of the ball.
00:19:30
blessings
um i mean that first one was just a bit loopy but this one was a good strike to be fair um so yeah happy to see him scoring again may it continue it was just it was in the air for too long i'm not when shots are in the air for too long i'm not sure about it i think the keeper should save it
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're not calling the first girl that he scored lucky, are you? ah That was Iron Robin-esque. He meant to put it in top bins.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
he yeah
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, Lamptey this time though, no, you can't argue with this one being luck or not, because he starts the move, takes the ball up the pitch, and like you say, straight to Matoma, our danger man when he does come on, and then plays it out to him. The ball bounces lovely to him and drills it, bottom left hand corner for him, straight into there. What a finish, I've got to say. yeah Hit that with some venom.
00:20:24
blessings
Yeah he he really did, it was a good finish and its it's interesting for him because at the start of the season he wasn't really getting the looking at all um and I thought hes he's probably on his way out maybe in January but he's he's taking this chance because Veltman's been out and there's been a couple of other injuries. and We can't trust Webster and all these other issues we've touched on in the past, but it's good to see a player who was looking like he was out of the picture actually come back in, take his chance. um i just yeah I wonder what's next for him if one of that one comes back as well.
00:20:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, reckon he actually will start? Because I'm very much in the Veltman lovers camp. I think that guy is solid every time he plays. ah Obviously Lamptey started this game and a couple other games when Veltman was out.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just feel like defensively, it's still question marks.
00:21:20
blessings
Yeah, I'd agree with that because you do see some good flashes from Lamptey like um the cross against Southampton was lovely. Obviously the two goals and you see some really good things.
00:21:32
blessings
He's got a lot of pace about them as well. But then and then you have a common who was against but that um when he's gone out for the head and stacked it.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:42
blessings
Yeah, it's like yeah defensively he will get found out when he plays against better players, but.
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:21:49
blessings
Yeah, for a deputy for development, I think it's not bad. It's not too bad.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, if you could mix Veltman and him, like Veltman's defensive work, Veltman's height as well, Lamptey's pace and attacking work, you'd have some player there.
00:21:58
blessings
Yeah.
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like if you could just merge the two, I think i'll that's ah a wish for Christmas or the next Christmas or New Year's, whatever it might be. Yeah, if you could blend the two, that is some player, because like I said, other things that Lamptey's good at, just carrying the ball forward like he did for this goal,
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um just comfortable on the ball, good at dribbling, um and yeah, good on the ball. I also want to touch on the Jal Pedro redeeming himself yet again for giving away the penalty and for me being at fault for their second goal. Lovely little layoff, like obviously Matoma cuts it back to Jal Pedro,

Jal Pedro's Role and Controversies

00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
quite a I guess it could be more difficult. The ball he takes straight with a touch, pops up, and then he just knows Lamptey's behind him, great awareness, and then just lays the ball off to him. So yeah, I want to say, Jal Pedro is such an interesting one. he that He was involved in every single goal. And I don't know whether he had a good game or a bad game based on that, especially after him trying to murder someone against Brentford. He's come off that and come out all right.
00:23:15
blessings
Yeah, I mean, he's he's gone from attempted murder to now being involved in everything. So, I mean, I'm i'm glad he sort of, we've still got him. I think a band would have been understood for me if if they stopped that.
00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:30
blessings
But yeah, like you say, he's he's um is an important player for us. He's involved in everything, good or bad.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:37
blessings
I don't really mind that, to be honest. We need like a sort of pantomime kind of guy.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a pantomime villain.
00:23:42
blessings
Yeah, that's it. I don't really mind that. As long as you're scoring a couple of goals, I'm all for that, to be honest. um but it's yeah it's The goal was a good move as well.
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:23:52
blessings
like The whole team, um the the most of the attacking players were involved in it. It was a nice move against a really good Villa defence.
00:24:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah 100% and well that wraps up the Aston Villa vs Brighton

Looking Forward to Arsenal Clash

00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
review and we play Arsenal on Saturday at 5.30 prime time oh no so we're gonna look forward to that I can't wait to watch it with some some of our friends and hopefully I'll watch their demise and us finally get a win fingers crossed
00:24:12
blessings
Oh, corners, corners, I know.
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
and that will be that from us. It's been blessing Shabamba, it's been Jamie G and we will see you next time.
