Introduction to Summer TBR Mini-Episode

00:00:05
Speaker
Hey guys, welcome to Bring Your Own and catch all of locationals this time podcast. My name is Brandi. I'm Kendra. And I'm Kayla. So well timed, you guys. That was fast, yeah. Today we are doing a little bit of a mini episode. As we get ready for summer and all the fun stuff coming up for us this summer, we want to do a summer TBR episode. So it's going to be a little mini episode where we talk about our summer TBR. Yeah. Yeah.
00:00:33
Speaker
love summer reading. I feel like this is usually a time when people start to

What Makes a Good Summer Read?

00:00:37
Speaker
read a lot. Like you're out of school, you're on vacation, you have some more downtime, you're probably looking for like a really good beach read. So maybe we can help you out. Yeah, we'll give you some books that we think make for really good summer reads and then we'll also tell you what's on our TBR like Brandy mentioned and hopefully we can have a really fun, joyous summer full of books that we love.
00:01:01
Speaker
Yay. What makes a summer read for you guys? Like, if you're gonna classify something as a summer read, what's it gonna be? I think it depends on what your summer plans are. So if you are constantly traveling, or like, okay, I'll speak for myself, if I'm gonna be constantly traveling on the move, I don't want something that's gonna take up like too much of my brain.

Preferred Summer Genres: Rom-Coms and Travel

00:01:26
Speaker
Like, I don't want to read the neck, like, I don't want to read something that's like super heavy,
00:01:30
Speaker
Um, but I also don't want to read something that's like boring, right? Like I want something that is in terms of romance, something that's fun, something that's a little smutty, maybe something that also has like a beach type setting, but something that I can also like pick up and put down really easily without losing what happened in the story. Cause like, I'm going to be on the move. Like I can't like sit at my house and like binge all the time. If I'm going to be like traveling, cause I want to do like excursions and I want to hang out with like my friends. So something that is.
00:02:00
Speaker
something with that combination that I just mentioned, so. Yeah, I typically read a lot of, I mean, I already read a lot of romance, but I feel like I read even more, if that's even possible, like rom-com specifically during this time, because they are usually, usually like low stress, low stakes. And I want something fun. I want something usually with a fun setting.
00:02:28
Speaker
especially when I'm traveling, I really like to like read books that are like, you know, take place maybe in multiple different places or the characters are traveling or something like that. And yeah, it's usually, usually I prefer just like at least a little bit of sprinkling of smut or something in there. Just, I just like, it's just the vibes for me when it comes to a summary, you know, the vibes gotta match the time. And so that's usually what for me makes a good summary.
00:02:57
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely.

Eclectic Summer Reading Tastes

00:02:58
Speaker
And I feel like I relate to that so much. I have I'm a teacher so I have a job where I don't work in the summers. So I feel like my taste personally for me is extremely eclectic in the summer just because I have
00:03:11
Speaker
that whole time. Last summer I read the Poppy War series, I read Alone With You and the Ether, and I would describe either of those as light reads. But that's also just because I had, like you mentioned Kendra, I had huge chunks of time where I could just lay out and be reading. So I completely feel like I know what a summer vibe is, but for me personally, I feel like my taste gets the most eclectic it gets is during the summer months.
00:03:42
Speaker
But yeah, I think if somebody not in my profession asked me for a summer read, I feel like I would say the same thing as vibes and something light.

Discussing Spicy Summer Reads

00:03:52
Speaker
Yeah, like a few summers ago, I did Spicy Girl Summer on TikTok, which was so much fun because it was like, what is just the spiciest things that I can read?
00:04:03
Speaker
I read Credence during the summer, which in terms of setting does not have like a summer vibe whatsoever. Kayla, you would hate that book. I know.
00:04:14
Speaker
You're right. I know. I've never touched it and I won't. I loved it. I thought it was really good. It did exactly what it needed to do and it kept me entertained. And sometimes that's all you really need from a summer read. I was reading that book in Mexico with my best friend and her family. So I'm reading about this girl fucking her step-uncle and my best friend's mom was like, you want to go get lunch? I'm like, yeah. Let me just put this down.
00:04:39
Speaker
which also I think for a summer read if you're gonna be like around people like at a resort or like with family and stuff like imagine like trying to describe the plot of Credence with someone who just like sees you

Summer Reading Recommendations

00:04:51
Speaker
happen to like read a book right like so maybe for a summer read you want to have a for your outside book you want to have something that is a little more um easier to explain and not so taboo and have have your more taboo stuff on your phone where they can't see the cover and ask you what you're doing
00:05:11
Speaker
Do you guys have any good examples of like books that you've read that make good summaries? Usually they have like summer in the title.
00:05:23
Speaker
pretty good. So like, so I think very on the nose. Yeah, yeah, like every summer after is a good summer read happened. Yeah, it happened. Like, also one that is like a little bit inks here but like had the like settings vibes really down is the roughest draft by Emily. Why do you say their name?
00:05:49
Speaker
They're a husband and wife writing team. It's like Emily Webberly and Austin Seigman broke up, but they have an acronym that they use, but I don't know it. Yeah. I thought it was like a really good summer read because it was very quick, kept me engaged. And it's set in Florida and they're like writing at this like beach house together. And I just, I thought it was good. It wasn't like my favorite thing in the world, but I still had a really good time with it. I had really fun reading that one.
00:06:13
Speaker
Yeah, I really like, we've talked about this on the pod before. Kendra and I both really like the Love Lists and Fancy Ships series by Sarah Grinder Ruiz. We, especially on audio, they're really good on audio. They're narrated by Carissa Broadbent.
00:06:30
Speaker
Nope, that is an author. Carissa Vacker. Yes. Carissa Vacker. But again, the settings vibe is so there because they're on a cruise ship in Florida. Yeah. Well, not a cruise ship. It's a private yacht. Yeah, thank you. Thank you. It's a private yacht. They are stewardesses. Wait, is that who does the voice of Vanessa? Vanessa Edwin is Carissa Vacker. Yes.
00:06:54
Speaker
Oh, sorry. Okay, got it. Yes, sorry. Yeah, so if you're like, who is Prisivacker? She's Vanessa Edwin, who narrates like Heartless by Elsie Silver. Anyway, she's a stewardess on a yacht. It follows the different people that work on that yacht, and they have a bunch of different clients that come throughout the year. So it takes place usually over several months, yacht season.
00:07:23
Speaker
And so that one's a lot of fun. I really enjoy that series as well. It's a good summer read. Yeah, yeah. One that pops into my head when I think about summer reads is The Runaway Series by Daphne Perry, which is five books following six kids. They're kind of heavy at some points, but never until the point where it's like,
00:07:45
Speaker
removing yourself from the story and then entering back into it is going to feel like too much. But it's a really, really fun concept.

Current Summer Reading Lists

00:07:54
Speaker
It's basically like they're daisy-chaining a car across the country. And each person who's taking it across the country, you get their backstory and you get where they're at today and things like that. I thought the concept was really unique and it felt so summery to me. I think most of the book takes place over the summertime.
00:08:13
Speaker
And it's like a road trip. Like what is more summery than that? It's like a multi-person daisy chain road trip, which is so fun. Yeah, each one is like in a different, takes place in a different state. And so they're all different settings. And they're not like super long either. Each book is a little over 200 pages maybe. So they're not super long. Those ones are very easy to get through. I did them on audio and they were really good.
00:08:40
Speaker
Me too. Hear me out. Even though they take place in the dead of winter starting the Love Like Farm series, I feel like it's so summer vibes as in like they feel like Hallmark-y in a good way. Like they feel like a Hallmark movie in the best way. And like in the rom-com sense. I feel like those are such good summer reads. But like Christmas in July is a thing.
00:09:05
Speaker
And then like, yeah, and mixed signals literally takes place in the summer. No, sorry, mixed signals in spring. In the weeds. Oh, you're so right. You're so right. I also, I mean, obviously, without question, all of Emily Henry's books are really good summer reads. That's like, also like, I'm talking like, what are the books that like, I would see at an airport, right? Like, you're gonna see Emily Henry.
00:09:34
Speaker
You're going to see Colleen Hoover. If you want a Colleen Hoover book that I think is like really underrated, but like really good. Heart Bones has like a summer type feeling as well. It's like takes place on the beach in Galveston, Texas. Yeah, is it Galveston or South Padre? It's somewhere on the coast of Texas. Yeah, I thought that book was actually really well done. So if you want a coho book that isn't the herd top hitters, I would go for that one because you're going to see it everywhere.
00:10:03
Speaker
For me, again, this isn't super lighthearted, but you made it full of death with your beauty. It literally takes place on an island. It's a tropical vacation. It's got those vibes for the summer feelings. I definitely would never describe that book as lighthearted or rom-com-y. But if you're somebody who wants something a little heavier but still with those summer vibes, that's a good way to go. But I like the point that you made of some people do just have all this time in the summer to really sit down with heavier books.
00:10:32
Speaker
I'm such a hypocrite because like, yeah, last summer, I read Lessons in Chemistry. That was like a knockout. You read it last fall. I read it in the fall. I read it in December. I read it in California. I live in California like it's summer year round. So scratch that. But a book that I did read last summer that was also really heavy was Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.
00:11:02
Speaker
That was, that was a lot. If you have a lot of time this summer and you can sit down with a book, check your content warnings. But tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow is really good.
00:11:13
Speaker
Seven Days in June is also a really good summer read, I think, in terms of a heavy hitter. I thought that book is so well done. So speaking of your summer, what is on your summer TBR? Either books that haven't come out yet that you want to check out or books that are out that you haven't gotten around to yet, what are some that you really want to read?

Kayla's Exciting Reads for Summer

00:11:35
Speaker
so my list this summer and you know what's crazy is that during the summer is usually when I end up reading like my all-time favorite books like for the year so like last summer I also did Magnolia Parks and I read that and like we all read that like what August of last year and um so I'm hoping that like my favorite book of the summer is like not even going to be a book that I mention on this list like I hope that I just like randomly come across something again because I love when that happens um so I want to do
00:12:05
Speaker
Will They or Won't They? by Ava Wilder, which is coming out soon. Kayla already read it. I told her not to tell me a single thing about it, because I want to replicate the exact same experience I had with How to Pick It in Hollywood, which is one of my favorite books of the year. I've kept my promise so far. Yeah, you've done a really good job. Thank you. It comes out June 27th, by the way, June 27th. Oh my god, that's my friend. That's my friend John's birthday. Happy birthday, John. You get a book. Happy birthday, John.
00:12:35
Speaker
Um, I want to do Same Time Next Summer by Annabelle Monahan. Monahan? Yeah, that's how you say your name. Because our friend Alice read it and loved it. And then Brandy read another book by that author. Nora goes off script and also really loved it. So, and it seems really interesting. And then
00:12:56
Speaker
Physically, I have A Perfect Vintage by Chelsea Fagan, which comes out in June. I have an advanced copy of it. I mean, look at the cover. It's done by the same cover artist who does Carly Fortune's books. It's gorgeous. It's like painted look. I know we're trying to not say reverse anymore, so I will not say that. It's age gap where the woman is older and the man is younger. It takes place in France. I think she's like an interior
00:13:27
Speaker
she she's a consultant specializing in transforming uh old french country estates so she works in like design um so i'm really excited to read this yeah it's gonna be a debut um my friend mckenzie who runs the bad bitch book club which if you're looking for an online book club hers is probably the best one you can join uh
00:13:50
Speaker
She's helping release this book through her literary consulting agency that she just started up and she thinks this book is going to be great and she thinks I'll love it. So Mackenzie has never steered me wrong. And I'm excited to get into this. So I think Chelsea Fagan, the author, too, is like already kind of like she already has like a niche somewhere on the Internet. I think she has something with like money or like she has a following already. So interested to see her debut. I'm hoping to get to better than the movies this summer.
00:14:18
Speaker
so I have not seen yeah like a single negative thing about this book ever um people say it's Lynn Painter's like best work because she writes both YA and adult romances so I'm excited for it and the cover is just so cute like very cute I'm hoping it's good and then I want to finally read The True Love Experiment which I've had an arc up forever and I just have not gotten around to it and Brandy loved it read it read it loved it so
00:14:48
Speaker
yeah that's sort of like my general list um and then Brandy and Kayla will also mention some books that I'm hoping to get to as well. Yeah um for me okay so I have a couple um Kendra's already read this one but

Brandi's Summer TBR Focus

00:15:05
Speaker
because of how highly she's talked about it I also want to read this one and also the cover is like
00:15:10
Speaker
Really pretty. Gorgeous. It's gorgeous. That Summer Feeling. Yes. By Bridgette Morrison. Is that how you say your name? Morrissey. Morrissey, okay, yeah. So that one comes out this summer that I really want to check out.
00:15:24
Speaker
Reckless by LC Silver comes out in June, very beginning of June and we all are so excited for that one. Cannot wait. And also similarly to like accidental pregnancy, I've seen this one kind of like floating around a little bit. This one also comes out early June, Baby Moon or Bust. The cover designer is Lenny Kaufman, who's like art, I think a lot of us really, really love. And I've seen this one kind of floating around. I think it's been being,
00:15:54
Speaker
pushed by Valentine PR right now. And so that one looks really interesting and just kind of like fun. And the cover is giving very much summer vibes. So I want to check that one out. Also, I have two more. You with the View. I've only seen like maybe a couple people post about it, but I think it was Maisie Eddings who also posted like, she reposted character art of it on her story from the author and it looked
00:16:23
Speaker
really pretty. And so I like went immediately to Goodreads and checked it out. Basically it's like two high school enemies reunite on a road trip inspired by like their grandparents' like love affair in previous years. And so, and it's a debut romance as well. The cover looks beautiful. So I'm excited to read that one. It comes out in July. And then lastly, I did not read Love on the Brain by Ellie Hazelwood.
00:16:51
Speaker
But I do want to read Love Theoretically, which comes out in June. The cover's really pretty. He looks like Milo from Atlantis. And I think everybody had a crush on him when they were a kid. And it's fake dating, but she falls for his older brother instead of the guy that she's fake dating. So kind of a little twist on that trope. So I'm really excited to check that one out as well. So that's currently what's on my summer TBR.
00:17:22
Speaker
Yeah, so my summer TBR doesn't have a ton of new releases. I have to admit, I just really struggle with keeping up with new releases. Like I don't know what shit is coming out ever, except for like maybe two authors that I just always know. Like Elsie's books, I'm really excited. It's always like parts of series. Like I don't even know when their other books are coming out. You know what I mean? Sorry. Yeah.
00:17:45
Speaker
a roundabout way of saying the only people I really keep up to date with releases on are Elsie and Deafneet. That's just up because of that. I mean, to be fair, there's so much to keep up with. There is, yeah. Yeah. I have a really hard time, and I don't read emails, so any time that Valentine sends me an email, it's like, how can we release so many
00:18:03
Speaker
archive, archive, archive. But yeah, so most of my stuff on my TBR is like older books that I just haven't gotten to yet or books that have gotten a lot of hype that I just haven't gotten to yet. So I want to finish The Devil series by Elizabeth O'Rourke.
00:18:19
Speaker
I listened to the first one on audio and I thought it was very fun, but I just haven't gotten to the rest yet. And our friend Ashley, who has a podcast called Read It or List It, which you guys should check out if you enjoy listening to bookish podcasts, she swears by this series. She told me that the next book is one of her favorite books of all time, so I'm very excited to read that.
00:18:40
Speaker
I want to read The Windy City. Currently it's a duet. There's going to be more. Yes, yes, yes. Kendra and Kayla read those a couple months ago and loved them. I just haven't gotten to them yet. I want to read A Million Junes by Emily Henry. I'll save that for a day where I feel like crying. Good luck. I want to get to Fourth Wing. Yeah, I want to get to Fourth Wing. Yes. Yeah, I bought it. Kayla, I own it now. I'm so proud of you. I'll read Winter King.
00:19:08
Speaker
you read fourth wing, it'll be great. Oh my god, that yeah, it literally was the winter king that like thrust me back into wanting to like read a lot of romanticy. Like, yeah, so I wouldn't want that. I would say this one is like, there's like, like this whole thing going around about a book talk about this one, but I would call it new adult rather than adult fantasy, but I don't know if that matters to you.
00:19:30
Speaker
No, that doesn't. I'm the romance vibes. And then last one I want to get to is Runaway Love by Melanie Harlow. Yeah, it's a single dad nanny romance that seems so fun.
00:19:46
Speaker
It was on my radar, but I didn't prioritize it until you guys. It's so funny. I got this PR package from her and it had this candle in it that I swear to God is the nicest smelling candle I've ever gotten in my life. And I posted about it on Instagram. She damped me and she said that it's like the scent that the single dad in the book is obsessed with smelling on the nanny that he hates, that he loves or whatever. I'm like, I'm in there.
00:20:14
Speaker
I've only read, the only book I've read by her is Ignite, so I feel like I need to check out some of her other books. If you want, you should finish the Cloverly Farm second gen if you want like silly poofy summer vibes.

Inviting Listener Summer TBRs

00:20:27
Speaker
Okay. Like extremely silly summer vibes. You know what other book I want to read? What's it called? Is it Out on a Limb or On a Limb? You know what I'm talking about?
00:20:38
Speaker
Oh, yeah. That wrote next of kin. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It's like I want to each. Yeah, I really want to read that this summer because she just posted this beautiful author's note that was like really touching.
00:20:52
Speaker
um and you guys know i love an author's note so yeah i want to read that one too i really want to read that yeah yeah i definitely want to read that one too i just finished next of kin recently on audio like i once sitting to that book i started at 3 pm and finished it that night um and i really enjoyed it like i'm really excited for the next one i'm gonna wait for next to you to come out on audio to read that one which i think it's actually coming out this summer so i'll add that to my tbrs nice yeah i i think i'll go back and
00:21:19
Speaker
do next of kin on audio as well. So I tried reading it physically. Yeah, I tried reading it physically and I just yeah, I didn't click with with me but I'm blaming that on myself not not the book. I yeah, I think the audio performance is really well done. I think you'll enjoy it on audio. Okay, cool, cool. It's on hoopla for me. So
00:21:41
Speaker
I have to check that was I got it on hoopla it was readily available immediately so it's so strange to me what's on hoopla and like what's on Libby and how they don't because they're the same library it's like I don't understand I'm sure there's legality behind it all maybe
00:22:03
Speaker
But we are on Instagram at Bring Your Own Pod and we would really, really love to know what your summer TBR is. So go there either in the comments of this episode or in our stories. Let us know what you're reading this summer or if you have any good summer vibes, recs for us. Yes. We are always looking for a hidden gem. Like if you think like, Oh my gosh, like no one's talked about this book or whatever, like you think we'll enjoy it. Let us know because yeah,
00:22:31
Speaker
That's how we discovered some of our favorite books of all time. Yeah, probably at least one of us will be like bet and then read it and then can just somehow convince the other two. Yeah, we'll come up with like we've said before, we'll text one thing from the book and then the other two will be like immediately sold. Wishing you the best reading summer of your life. Yes, absolutely. We'll see you next time. Bye guys. Bye.
