Speaker: We've left our mark.
Speaker: We have done it.
Speaker: That'll have to do.
Speaker: That'll have to do.
Speaker: So I'm fine with that.
Speaker: I'm fine with that.
Speaker: Yeah, that would be great.
Speaker: You know what else would be great?
Speaker: What's that?
Speaker: Hey there, everybody.
Speaker: Welcome back to Pixlet.
Speaker: My name is Kevin.
Speaker: With me, as always, is Phil.
Speaker: And today on the show, we are finishing...
Speaker: Resident Evil City of the Dead, the third in the Resident Evil book series, but it's the second game.
Speaker: It's about Resident Evil 2.
Speaker: And yeah, the book comes to a roaring conclusion.
Speaker: It sure does.
Speaker: Sure does.
Speaker: But before we get started today, as of the recording today, which will be coming out in a couple weeks.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Jesus Christ.
Speaker: I just wanted to talk about the dumbest thing I've seen today.
Speaker: Oh, oh yeah.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: We're doing this.
Speaker: I'm in.
Speaker: And this is John Carmack tweeting that he is going to be the keynote speaker at a convention called BasedCon.
Speaker: Now- That sounds good and not at all conspicuous.
Speaker: That sounds good and not at all conspicuous.
Speaker: Well, what is BasedCon?
Speaker: I'm curious.
Speaker: Please.
Speaker: BaseCon is a gathering for authors and fans of science fiction and fantasy.
Speaker: Hey, Phil, you and I are fans of science fiction and fantasy.
Speaker: We're also authors.
Speaker: Wow.
Speaker: This sounds like it could be for us, Kevin.
Speaker: It could be for us.
Speaker: That sounds great.
Speaker: Whether you've been to a con before or a frequent con goer, we go to conventions.
Speaker: We go to cons, yeah.
Speaker: Maybe not as much as the next guy, but we're in the middle.
Speaker: Who is tired of woke propaganda?
Speaker: Oh.
Speaker: Oh, no.
Speaker: Oh, no, Johnny boy.
Speaker: John, is this your milkshake duck moment in the sun?
Speaker: Oh, but I mean, come on.
Speaker: John Carmack, I think after reading Masters of the Sun.
Speaker: He's been shitty for a while.
Speaker: Yeah, I think we could have guessed this.
Speaker: He hasn't been so explicitly shitty that it's just like little hints here and there, and then he does something like,
Speaker: I'm going to be the keynote speaker at BASEDCON, where some of the beliefs at BASEDCON include men cannot give birth, guns don't kill people, people kill people, a fetus is a human being, socialism has failed everywhere it's been tried, and discriminating against white people is racism.
Speaker: Wait, did he say this?
Speaker: No, he didn't, but that's the beliefs of BaseCon.
Speaker: Oh, okay.
Speaker: Oh, great.
Speaker: Awesome.
Speaker: This is good.
Speaker: So, just to answer those questions, men cannot give birth.
Speaker: Yes, they can.
Speaker: Trans men are men.
Speaker: Trans women are women.
Speaker: And trans people are people.
Speaker: And non-binary people are valid.
Speaker: So, fuck you.
Speaker: Guns don't kill people.
Speaker: People kill people.
Speaker: I mean, we're...
Speaker: Phil and I are not the biggest anti-gun people you're going to find, but that's usually a rallying cry of shitty people.
Speaker: Yes, exactly.
Speaker: I'm not anti-gun, but that is a big old dog whistle.
Speaker: That's a dog whistle and a half.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: You and I are not friends.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: A fetus is a human being.
Speaker: No, it's not.
Speaker: No, it's not?
Speaker: It's a fetus.
Speaker: Socialism has failed everywhere it's been tried.
Speaker: Has it, though?
Speaker: It has not.
Speaker: What's capitalism doing right now?
Speaker: How's capitalism doing?
Speaker: And discriminating against white people is racism.
Speaker: No, that is technically not possible because racism is discrimination plus power.
Speaker: And you can't be racist against the people in power.
Speaker: Yeah, it's the ultimate punching up, punching down.
Speaker: Punching up versus punching down.
Speaker: So, BASEDCON, go fuck yourselves.
Speaker: Yeah, no friend of ours.
Speaker: There goes our invite to BASEDCON.
Speaker: Heaven, we're never going to make the con circuit like this.
Speaker: We're never going to make the con circuit now.
Speaker: No.
Speaker: Yeah, and these speakers, these guests, you know, John Carmack.
Speaker: Get fucked, John.
Speaker: Is it just a, it's just, I mean, this is actually, this might be actually very valuable for, like, just people to go ahead and block.
Speaker: Just block.
Speaker: Go to the speakers and just, like, you know, and that's what you would expect.
Speaker: It's a bunch of white people with terrible haircuts, so.
Speaker: You had to make that comment the day I hid my hair under a ball cap.
Speaker: Is there a reason why you're hiding your hair, Phil?
Speaker: It just doesn't.
Speaker: I look a mess.
Speaker: It's not.
Speaker: I had a half day today, and believe me when I say I took full advantage of it.
Speaker: Oh, boy.
Speaker: So anyway, that was the dumb thing of the day.
Speaker: I don't think that's going to be a recurring segment, but I figured it needed to be done today because it was, you know, top of mind.
Speaker: I think that was good enough for a whole month, if you ask me.
Speaker: That was a dumb thing for the month.
Speaker: But you know what isn't dumb?
Speaker: Resident Evil and SD Perry.
Speaker: She's amazing.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: She wouldn't be caught dead at BasedCon.
Speaker: Let's talk about Resident Evil, City of the Dead.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Go to where we left off.
Speaker: When I tell you to dump a body in the marsh, you dump them in the marsh.
Speaker: We left off with chapter 21.
Speaker: Chapter 21, and we are back with Ada.
Speaker: And Ada is almost as much or more of a character in some respects than Claire and Leon.
Speaker: I feel like she has more development than Claire does.
Speaker: She's really tearing herself up.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: She develops.
Speaker: She grows.
Speaker: She develops as a character the most out of anybody.
Speaker: Because by the end, Leon is still, you know,
Speaker: A pretty boy.
Speaker: A pretty boy cop.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Who is just a little bit more cynical.
Speaker: And Claire is still looking for her brother.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Claire changes not at all.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Claire is pretty much the same from beginning to end.
Speaker: Leon changes a little.
Speaker: Ada Wong changes a ton.
Speaker: A ton.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So chapter 21, Ada thinks that Leon is being defensive since he she blew off his attempts to comfort her.
Speaker: But they're making good time through the sewers and there's not many enemies down there until they come around a corner and there's some gunfire.
Speaker: And Leon gets shot when he saves Ada's life by protecting her from the bullet.
Speaker: Oh, the classic throw yourself in front of the bullet trope.
Speaker: Good for you, Leon.
Speaker: Classic.
Speaker: Leon is down on the ground, and Ada knows that the wound isn't fatal, decides to run after Annette and put an end to all this.
Speaker: So she's running through the rooms, and she's trying to catch up on Annette when Annette gets to drop on her.
Speaker: And Annette knows who Ada is through.
Speaker: She's like, oh, wait a minute.
Speaker: I know who you are.
Speaker: You were the one who was dating the John and like John's dead.
Speaker: He died at the Spencer estate.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So she has her theories about Ada.
Speaker: And she's like, I'm pretty sure you're here to steal the G-virus.
Speaker: And Ada's like, no, I'm not.
Speaker: What?
Speaker: What?
Speaker: No.
Speaker: Annette also fills in some of the gaps.
Speaker: The T-virus is what leaked out into the city via the rats.
Speaker: And William injected himself with the G-virus to survive, but he mutated.
Speaker: They get into a struggle over the gun.
Speaker: And Ada tosses Annette over the railing and she falls down into this little pit area.
Speaker: As Ada runs around to try to find her way down to where Annette is, she gets attacked by a reptilian thing.
Speaker: Huh.
Speaker: We cut over to Claire.
Speaker: Claire is desperately trying to find Sherry, and while doing so, finds Leon.
Speaker: Shot and on the ground.
Speaker: Leon tells Claire about Ada, and Claire decides to go looking for both Ada and Sherry.
Speaker: Now we cut to Annette.
Speaker: Annette is in a ton of pain, and in the background, she can hear gunshots, which is probably Ada fighting the reptile thing.
Speaker: Yeah, whatever that is.
Speaker: Whatever that's going on.
Speaker: And Annette lowers the bridge.
Speaker: And then a girl in cutoffs finds her, which is Claire.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I do love that dramatic irony.
Speaker: Some girl in cutoffs, huh?
Speaker: Girl in cutoffs is here.
Speaker: What's going on?
Speaker: And Annette's like, ah, she's from Umbrella 2.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: You're all from Umbrella.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Yes, Mr. Sherman.
Speaker: Everything stinks.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And then Claire's like, no, I'm looking for a girl named Sherry.
Speaker: Wait, Sherry, you're Annette Burke and Sherry, what, your daughter?
Speaker: And Annette's like, no, you can't know Sherry.
Speaker: Sherry's in the safety of the police station.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I took care of all that.
Speaker: I'm a genius.
Speaker: Everything's fine.
Speaker: I'm a genius.
Speaker: I have several degrees and yeah, and I am the smartest person here.
Speaker: And, uh, Sherry's and, uh, Claire's like, Nope, everybody's dead in the police station.
Speaker: Uh, so, and that's like, no, no, no way.
Speaker: That's impossible.
Speaker: And Annette is a good mom.
Speaker: She's a good mom.
Speaker: Annette is stumbles away.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: Just blind leading the blind here.
Speaker: We cut back to Leon.
Speaker: We're in chapter 22.
Speaker: Leon wakes up and the bleeding from his arm has stopped and clotted.
Speaker: His arm hurts a lot and he's very mad at Ada for running off after the shooter and mad at himself for not going with Claire.
Speaker: Lover's quarrel.
Speaker: Yeah, it's a lover's quarrel.
Speaker: They've known each other for a few hours now.
Speaker: Keep in mind, this all just happened over the course of a few hours.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: When you think about it, when you play Resident Evil 2, it's not a terribly long game, and for everything you do, it might as well be in real time based on the time you get out.
Speaker: It's just one shitty night, basically.
Speaker: Basically, yeah.
Speaker: I mean, that's the same thing with...
Speaker: um like Resident Evil 4 the remake just came out and one of the things they do is there's like a few times where time clearly passes because Leon passes out or whatever and it goes from daytime to nighttime um so yeah there's a but yeah typically Resident Evil games and the story are are pretty concise um in the amount of time that passes um
Speaker: Leon uses the gunshots that he's hearing to track down where Ada is, and he finds her fighting a gigantic crocodile.
Speaker: She's not doing much damage to it.
Speaker: And Leon shoots the croc with the shotgun, and the croc just takes the bullets.
Speaker: It's just like, fine.
Speaker: What else you got?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Whatever.
Speaker: Leon, he does what one of your favorite movies of all time does.
Speaker: He pulls a Jaws, doesn't he?
Speaker: Sure as shit pulls a Jaws.
Speaker: He pulls a Jaws.
Speaker: I love him.
Speaker: I love him.
Speaker: Smile, you son of a bitch.
Speaker: And, you know, he kicks the canister towards the shark, the crock.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Into its mouth.
Speaker: Think about a croc size.
Speaker: Got lifeless eyes like a doll size.
Speaker: Lifeless eyes like a doll size.
Speaker: Till it bites.
Speaker: Eyes roll over whites.
Speaker: Y'all know me.
Speaker: Know what I do.
Speaker: Bad gator.
Speaker: Sharks in water.
Speaker: Our shark.
Speaker: Our gator.
Speaker: Our gator.
Speaker: That's going to be one of our Patreon rewards.
Speaker: We'll just live stream ourselves watching Jaws.
Speaker: That would be perfect.
Speaker: That would be great.
Speaker: What's the song that he sings?
Speaker: Oh, Spanish Ladies.
Speaker: Spanish Ladies.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I will end adieu to your fair Spanish ladies.
Speaker: Oh, God.
Speaker: We delivered the bomb.
Speaker: Anyway, I love that habit we have.
Speaker: But just one more.
Speaker: And now we're moving on.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Just one more reference.
Speaker: So Leon shoots the canister, blows the crock head clean off.
Speaker: And in Leon, as the one-liner Leon is like a flower starting to bloom.
Speaker: Because he's in full form in Resident Evil 4, but he really hasn't done anything in Resident Evil 2.
Speaker: And now he kills the crock and he says, gotcha, you dumb shit.
Speaker: Yeah!
Speaker: Listen, 10 out of 10 confidence.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: An effort was made.
Speaker: An effort was made.
Speaker: Four out of 10 in cleverness.
Speaker: It's no good night night.
Speaker: It's no where's everyone going, bingo?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: It's like watching a baby learn to crawl.
Speaker: It's a slow process, this Leon.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, Leon.
Speaker: So...
Speaker: We're back with Ada in chapter 23 and Ada is dressing Leon's wounds and lies to him about she had met how she had met Annette.
Speaker: And she feels kind of guilty about lying again.
Speaker: And she has emotions and feelings.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: She has an entire inner monologue about how she's falling for him and how she wants to run away with him and have white picket fence and kids with this kid.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: She might as well sing, like, Somewhere That's Green from Little Shop of Horrors.
Speaker: Suddenly, Leon is standing beside me.
Speaker: Oh, that could actually work.
Speaker: Yeah, you got a T-virus man-eating plant.
Speaker: Like, come on.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Actually, that...
Speaker: blew my mind when in Little Shop of Horrors, when what's her name?
Speaker: The girl who plays Audrey.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: When she goes from her like speaking voice, which is, you know, the high like,
Speaker: Yes, doctor.
Speaker: Sorry, doctor.
Speaker: And then when she belts out suddenly Seymour, you're like, whoa.
Speaker: And you're like flipping back over your chair.
Speaker: It has so much like depth and base to it.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Ellen Green.
Speaker: Ellen Green.
Speaker: Helen Green.
Speaker: Ellen Green.
Speaker: Yeah, she's one of those kind of like darlings of the off-Broadway scene.
Speaker: She's badass.
Speaker: She's totally badass.
Speaker: God.
Speaker: Yeah, she's amazing in Little Shop of Horrors.
Speaker: Go watch Little Shop of Horrors, by the way.
Speaker: Oh, so, so good.
Speaker: It's one of the formative movies of my life, and I've seen it too many times to count.
Speaker: Oh, so good.
Speaker: But yes, she's... Ada's singing Somewhere That's Green in her head.
Speaker: So good.
Speaker: Um...
Speaker: We finally get back to Sherry after falling down a poop pipe filled with poop water.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Oh, boy.
Speaker: This kid's going to have a serious just infections like nobody's business.
Speaker: Down in his sewer, not having a good time.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And she at one point says, she at one point has a thought like, it must have gone in my mouth.
Speaker: And I'm like.
Speaker: It did.
Speaker: it did kid i'm sorry about that yeah it did kid i'm sorry she uh climbs a really tall ladder and gets to a grate but it won't budge and she just basically is just hanging onto the ladder like well what the fuck do i do now yeah yeah she actually says shit which i love for her character
Speaker: I just love this 12-year-old kid just hanging, just like after all she's been there.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Been through.
Speaker: Well, you know what?
Speaker: It's like, give it to her.
Speaker: Yeah, of course she'd say that, you know?
Speaker: You know, we're not even putting that in the swear jar, kid.
Speaker: No, you know what?
Speaker: You get a freebie.
Speaker: Yeah, enjoy that.
Speaker: It's not happening again, but just this once.
Speaker: Then she hears someone walking around and calls for help and it's Claire.
Speaker: Claire is up there and she pulls the grate open.
Speaker: And Claire talks to her about her mom and how she ran off and also about the G virus.
Speaker: And Sherry's like, I don't know what you're talking about.
Speaker: Sweet.
Speaker: We cut over to Annette and Annette is looking for the tram and is talking to herself about everyone is how everyone's lying to her.
Speaker: And she's making her way to the lab and she hears Williams shriek and is satisfied that he must be back in the blast radius of the lab.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: That.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Like, right.
Speaker: Fingers crossed.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Chapter 24.
Speaker: We're back with Leon and Leon is sitting in some sort of control room and has been bandaged up by Ada, who has left to look for something.
Speaker: So he sees Ada running off to a transport and he runs and catches up with her before she's able to launch it.
Speaker: And she's like,
Speaker: I'm sorry.
Speaker: I was leaving without you.
Speaker: And he's like, she explains that she thought he was too wounded to take her with her, take him with her.
Speaker: And if it was a dead end or something that she would feel bad, Leon believes that she actually does feel guilty, but not sure if he buys the rest of it.
Speaker: Yeah, which, I mean, honestly, that good intuition.
Speaker: Yeah, good intuition.
Speaker: And then something attacks the tram.
Speaker: It knocks Ada out by punching two wounds into her hip.
Speaker: And then he goes, he dresses her wound quickly by ripping off parts of her dress.
Speaker: Very convenient choice, by the way.
Speaker: Very convenient choice.
Speaker: And then he grabs his shotgun.
Speaker: If there's anything that soaks up blood handily, it's silk.
Speaker: It's just... Silk is really good.
Speaker: It's so absorbent.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: You know what else is good is Remington Shotgun is very good at soaking up blood.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Or relocating blood.
Speaker: In a manner of speaking.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: Moving it to different places.
Speaker: All over.
Speaker: All over.
Speaker: Depending on what you're looking to do.
Speaker: Ask your doctor.
Speaker: To ask your doctor if Remington is right for you.
Speaker: Jesus Christ.
Speaker: That's...
Speaker: That's how it starts.
Speaker: Claire and Sherry arrive at the tram station and Claire orders the tram to come pick them up.
Speaker: And Claire's like, hey, Sherry, what's in the locket?
Speaker: And Sherry's like, I don't know.
Speaker: It doesn't open.
Speaker: Claire's like, interesting.
Speaker: I'll just leave that unexamined.
Speaker: Not going to go any.
Speaker: I'm not going to put it into the Resident Evil 3D spinny image thing and find a switch on it.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Probably fine.
Speaker: It's probably fine.
Speaker: But hey, somebody hears the music because X is going to give it to you.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: That was everywhere when this remake came out.
Speaker: I didn't either.
Speaker: That's the thing.
Speaker: You would think after two or three times, like, all right, guys, we get the joke.
Speaker: I do.
Speaker: No, never.
Speaker: Not for that one.
Speaker: I don't know why.
Speaker: I was just immune to it.
Speaker: Pour one out for DMX.
Speaker: Gone too soon, to be honest.
Speaker: Gone too soon.
Speaker: Fuck Elvis.
Speaker: It's all about DMX.
Speaker: It's DMX.
Speaker: Yeah, so Mr. X arrives.
Speaker: Claire wastes a ton of ammo slowing him down, and they're able to get on the tram and hit the button, leaving him on the platform.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Annette is in the lab and puts in a code to open all the doors, releasing whatever monsters may be lurking and also releasing the P-Epsilon gas, which would knock out any T-virus carriers.
Speaker: Ah, yeah.
Speaker: Also, Annette is juiced up on speed and painkillers at this point.
Speaker: Literally speed and painkillers and adrenaline.
Speaker: She's basically on her way to doing her own version of the third act in Scarface.
Speaker: Like she's just she's done.
Speaker: There's no coming down from this.
Speaker: She's just taking epinephrine and methamphetamine and injecting it right into her heart.
Speaker: Right there.
Speaker: She's like, well, it might kill me, but so will everything else.
Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
Speaker: Let's keep moving.
Speaker: You've got to admit, this has got to be a better way to go.
Speaker: Let's do this instead.
Speaker: Oh, boy.
Speaker: And then Annette sets a timer for the lab to detonate in 20 minutes.
Speaker: That should be enough time.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Chapter 25.
Speaker: That should be fine.
Speaker: That should be fine.
Speaker: Leon sees William for the first time.
Speaker: And there's a lot of great description in this scene of what he looks like.
Speaker: Actually, give me a moment.
Speaker: I'm going to pull up my my book here because I had it.
Speaker: I had it in the notes.
Speaker: All right.
Speaker: Where is that?
Speaker: Here we go.
Speaker: I found it.
Speaker: I found it relatively quick.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: It's right arm was six inches longer than the left.
Speaker: The stained bone claws jutting from the pulsing hand and the bulbous moving tumor in its right bicep looked like nothing so much as an eyeball the size of a dinner plate jerking wetly from side to side as if searching.
Speaker: And the scream was changing too, getting deeper, rougher, the shaggy face falling forward and melting into its chest like hot wax, like a movie effect.
Speaker: The creature's head flowed into its upper body, disappearing smoothly into its inflamed and greedy skin.
Speaker: That's some good body horror right there.
Speaker: That's some good body horror.
Speaker: And I love, and you, you other fans out there of the thing are going to love it too.
Speaker: From this point on in the book, it were, uh, she writes, she did, she labels it Birkin thing.
Speaker: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: And I was like, that's a pretty pointed reference.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: She knew what was going on.
Speaker: She understood the assignment.
Speaker: But yeah, it's very much a callback to the thing.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, which in the way she describes it really evoked even more so than the game evoked images of some of the stuff from John Carpenter's The Thing in my mind.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Especially during the blood test scene.
Speaker: All right.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: So...
Speaker: Leon keeps shooting it in the chest as it keeps coming from, um, but then suddenly it turns and leaves jumping over the railing and he has no idea why it left, but he's grateful.
Speaker: He goes to check on Ada.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: Meanwhile, Sherry hears the monster from a distance and is too scared to go forward, and Claire gives her her vest to make her feel braver.
Speaker: Meanwhile, again, Ada wakes up and realizes she may be infected.
Speaker: She asks Leon where they are, and he mentions it's an undergrad lab.
Speaker: He thinks she considers dropping her mission and running off.
Speaker: Oh, this is somewhere that screen happens.
Speaker: But she knows that she can't.
Speaker: Leon leaves her to go explore the lab, and Ada just waits a minute.
Speaker: For Leon to like clear out and then just pops right up to her feet because she realizes that she can move around better than Leon knows.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Things are moving fast now.
Speaker: Chapter 26, we're with Annette.
Speaker: Annette tries to go through the elevator to get out, but it's sealed behind a door that needs a special disc to open.
Speaker: And on her way back, she's attacked by a licker that cuts her arm open.
Speaker: And then she's like, I need to make everybody pay.
Speaker: She has a real skeletal moment.
Speaker: I want everyone to be sad.
Speaker: I'm going to make everybody sad.
Speaker: After this licker cuts her arm and she kills it.
Speaker: So we cut over to Leon and Leon hears the shots from Annette and he's in some sort of surgery lab and is looking for documents for anything useful.
Speaker: He finds a disc that reads for cargo room verification and he takes it.
Speaker: He walks back out of the hallway and finds Annette pointing a gun at him.
Speaker: This is basically the scene from The Happening where Marky Mark and his funky bunch break into that or go into that old lady's house.
Speaker: No, no, no, man, we're not.
Speaker: One of the greatest line deliveries.
Speaker: You're here to kill me.
Speaker: No, no, no, ma'am.
Speaker: We're not.
Speaker: So, um, so Marky Mark is Leon in this case, or Leon is Mark.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Um, we're all a little Marky Mark.
Speaker: We're all, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: Uh, stay prayed up everybody.
Speaker: Except for the hate crimes, but other than that, except for the hate crimes.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: I feel like other than that, we've all got a little Mark Mark inside us.
Speaker: Did you see that video of him where he's like, it's National Prayer Day, and it starts with him at the kneeler for the crucifix, and he kisses the cross on two sides, and he goes, he's like, happy National Prayer Day, stay prayed up.
Speaker: I have not, but I have absolutely zero reason to think that that didn't go down moment for moment exactly as you described it.
Speaker: that's that's who we're talking about here we're talking about mark walberg yeah you know if you if you had said to me before we even got on this topic if you had said to me you know who i'm talking about the prayer it up guy the stay prayer it up guy i'd go are you talking about mark walberg like yeah i would just it would just pop out just assume that it's mark walberg mark walberg that's yeah hashtag stay prayed up you know
Speaker: I know you're watching me, big guy.
Speaker: Not a fucking cop.
Speaker: Another connection to the departed, you know.
Speaker: World needs plenty of bartenders.
Speaker: Oh, God.
Speaker: Where the fuck were we?
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: So Annette is Leon does the no, ma'am, we're not.
Speaker: Annette tells Leon the truth behind Ada's mission.
Speaker: And then there's a rumble and a pipe falls down and conveniently knocks the fuck out of Annette.
Speaker: And the self-destruction notification begins blaring.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Chapter 27, Claire.
Speaker: Claire and Sherry got off an elevator and onto a platform.
Speaker: They're going to have to crawl through a vent, and then suddenly Mr. X arrives, and they run.
Speaker: We cut to Ada.
Speaker: Ada overhears Annette ranting from around the corner, and then the self-destruct sequence comes on.
Speaker: Ada reaffirms to herself that she needs to complete her mission, and she hides as Leon runs past and then runs where he was coming from.
Speaker: Leon, meanwhile, finds that Ada is gone and goes back in the labs to look for her.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Sherry and Claire are coming out of the crawl space and they Sherry drops out.
Speaker: Claire gives her her gun and then Claire has to do like a forward somersault out of the crawl space and only hurts herself a little bit and they get to running.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: It's that part of the game, guys.
Speaker: I know you all know it was coming.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: When we're getting to Dan Brown chapters, um, we're hitting Dan Brown peak right now.
Speaker: Uh, chapter 28, Annette wakes up and crawls out from under the pipes and she is pissed.
Speaker: Um, meanwhile, yeah, she's pissed because Ada took the, uh, the vial of G virus that she was holding, I believe.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: Meanwhile, Ada is moping and she believes she doesn't run.
Speaker: She doesn't deserve Leon.
Speaker: Oh, Leon took the biology virus.
Speaker: Ada believes that she doesn't deserve Leon anyway.
Speaker: And Leon and Ada run into each other out on the catwalk.
Speaker: Ada demands the G virus from him.
Speaker: And it finally has a moment of emotion and begins to cry and reveals who she is and all that stuff.
Speaker: And Ada's like, I'm not going to shoot you.
Speaker: And then Leon's relieved.
Speaker: And then Ada gets shot from behind and falls over the railing and grabs Leon's wrist.
Speaker: Annette was the shooter, but it was the last thing she could do before passing out.
Speaker: Um, you know, you're going to come down hard from that speed that I, yeah, that doesn't, that's not a gradual process.
Speaker: You're just going to, you're already on a rake.
Speaker: And she's already had like probably has a concussion and broken ribs.
Speaker: So she's, she's down for the count and don't expect her to get back up for the rest of the book.
Speaker: I'm just not seeing it happening.
Speaker: No, not seeing it happen.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: Meanwhile, Claire and Sherry are running through a machine room.
Speaker: They enter a room with molten metal below, and Claire gets the idea to try to bait Mr. X into jumping.
Speaker: And then Claire realizes that Mr. X is there for Sherry's locket.
Speaker: Oh, wait a minute.
Speaker: There's G-Virus in the locket.
Speaker: Sherry throws the locket to Claire, and Claire tosses it into the molten lava below, and Mr. X decides to follow it like the big dummy that he is.
Speaker: Oh, Mr. X. Mr. X. That's a picture wrap on Mr. X?
Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: He doesn't... Now, I feel like it was a missed opportunity that for all of her skills at adaptation...
Speaker: I think I was surprised that S.D.
Speaker: Perry didn't choose that moment to write about how he had the thumbs up on the way down as he sank into the molten metal.
Speaker: I feel like that was, you know, maybe it just wasn't going with her vision.
Speaker: Yeah, you got to show that that moment of understanding.
Speaker: where he's just like, yeah, it's a good game.
Speaker: Good game.
Speaker: Yeah, everybody.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker: I get it.
Speaker: I get it now.
Speaker: I feel fulfilled.
Speaker: But, you know, choices.
Speaker: Choices.
Speaker: I would have made that choice as well.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Ada gives Leon instructions on how to get out of the labs, realizing that at this point she would only slow him down.
Speaker: And she tells Leon to go and live.
Speaker: And then she lets go and falls into the abyss.
Speaker: Poor Leon.
Speaker: Poor Leon.
Speaker: Just when he thought he was going to get a smooch.
Speaker: Just when he thought he was going to get a smooch from his Asian girlfriend.
Speaker: He gets nothing.
Speaker: Not so much as a dry rubber above the pants.
Speaker: Just...
Speaker: Leon, he's having a hard first day of work.
Speaker: I'm just saying.
Speaker: He's having a hard first day.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: A very hard first day, if you know what I mean.
Speaker: I think we both know.
Speaker: Hey-oh.
Speaker: Hey.
Speaker: Hard meaning difficult.
Speaker: This is...
Speaker: Sherry and Clara are running through the machine area and get into an elevator and take it down.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Leon is super sad and he takes Ada's Beretta and notices that it was empty and that she was not even able to shoot him.
Speaker: She was bluffing.
Speaker: She didn't want to hurt him.
Speaker: Leon, in a fit of showmanship, disposes of the G-Virus tube by throwing it off the balcony catwalk thing.
Speaker: Leon and Claire get off the elevator and find the train.
Speaker: It's powered off, but they're there.
Speaker: And while Leon is waiting for the cargo elevator to arrive, Birkin arrives.
Speaker: Thought we were done with Birkin.
Speaker: Thought we were done with him.
Speaker: Claire has the subway powered up and is ready to go, but the gate is stuck.
Speaker: It needs to be opened manually.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Leon begins shooting Birkin in the eye and is able to fight him off in time for the elevator to arrive.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Claire works to open the gate.
Speaker: It's like it cuts back and forth between them so furiously in these last moments.
Speaker: It really does.
Speaker: It is fast, fast and furious.
Speaker: It's fast and furious.
Speaker: Claire works to open the gate.
Speaker: But who other but Mr. X, but very toasty Mr. X arrives.
Speaker: Leon ducks, dodges, and dives toward the elevator and shoots the monster in the chest with his shotgun, knocking it back so the elevator can get clear.
Speaker: Chapter 30.
Speaker: Sherry is on the train, but hearing the gunfight outside, Claire tells her to stay inside.
Speaker: Leon, meanwhile, is on a slow elevator ride.
Speaker: Claire is fighting Mr. X and out of ammo.
Speaker: The timer has reached zero on reaching minimum safe distance, and there are five more minutes left until the thing explodes.
Speaker: I thought that was a bait and switch.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: It's like you have minimum safe distance.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Now it's the timer for it blowing up.
Speaker: I know that they said it.
Speaker: I know they literally spelled it out, but I was still ready for, it was truly me going.
Speaker: How are they going to fucking do this?
Speaker: Like they got five seconds left.
Speaker: My reading comprehension might not be the strongest.
Speaker: So Claire is is fighting Mr. X and she's wondering why it's attacking her if the G virus is gone.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Leon takes the left hallway.
Speaker: Meanwhile, Claire is still fighting Mr. X.
Speaker: And runs up the stairs.
Speaker: She shoots him in the eye and causes him to miss, but his attack cracks the base of the stairs and she goes tumbling.
Speaker: Chapter 31.
Speaker: Leon turned the wrong way and has to run back.
Speaker: I love this detail so much.
Speaker: He's literally just getting to a dead end going, son of a bitch.
Speaker: Meanwhile, just like just...
Speaker: He like gets to the one always like, all right, left or right.
Speaker: Uh, well, most people go with their dominant hand.
Speaker: So I'm just going to go with the opposite.
Speaker: And it goes left.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And then the next chapter, he's like, fuck.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Speaker: Meanwhile, just like, meanwhile, Claire is doing all sorts of acrobatics with limited ammo, fighting Mr. X and trying to live.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: So she also gets a long like cut on her leg from Mr. X. She's sure she's going to die when a woman drops a machine gun from the shadows to her.
Speaker: Wonder who that could be.
Speaker: What?
Speaker: But Claire grabs it and fires and the stream of bullets, bullets, terrors, Mr. X into, and now it's picture app on Mr. X. Yes.
Speaker: Good.
Speaker: Fine.
Speaker: Um, Leon is running faster, sprinting toward the sound of heavy machinery.
Speaker: Machinery.
Speaker: Chapter 32.
Speaker: Claire gets back in a train and gets it moving.
Speaker: Sherry sees Leon from the back of the tram.
Speaker: Uh, Leon gets into the jumps onto the tram and gets in and tells Claire to go full throttle.
Speaker: The bomb detonates and Claire introduces Sherry to Leon.
Speaker: And then they hear something coming from the back of the train.
Speaker: Leon, noticing that Claire's leg, what were you going to say?
Speaker: I just, I gasped in anticipation.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Leon, noticing that Claire's leg is, as put in the text, text ripped to shit.
Speaker: It's very medical terminology there, but I think we all understood.
Speaker: My official medical diagnosis is your leg has been ripped to shit.
Speaker: I recommend this prescription of Remington.
Speaker: Remington.
Speaker: Good enough for horses.
Speaker: Well played, sir.
Speaker: Oh, poor horses.
Speaker: For many reasons.
Speaker: For many reasons.
Speaker: Claire puts together that Mr. X must have been down there following them if there was a G-Virus creature on board.
Speaker: Leon goes into the back of the train and finds the Birkin thing.
Speaker: Has mutated into just being a wet cave with teeth.
Speaker: Leon shoots it with the shotgun several times to no effect.
Speaker: And then he shoots it right in the eye with the magnum and kills it.
Speaker: And it turns and it basically just like melts down in front of him.
Speaker: And then Leon goes back and rejoins Claire and Sherry as the train exits into the sunlight.
Speaker: The end.
Speaker: Epilogue.
Speaker: Epilogue.
Speaker: Rebecca and her crew from the previous book find them walking down the road and pick them up.
Speaker: That's the end.
Speaker: That's the actual end this time.
Speaker: That's the actual end.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So that's the end of Resident Evil City of the Dead.
Speaker: What do you think?
Speaker: I loved it.
Speaker: I think not only does this work on its own as just a novel to read, like if you'd never played Resident Evil 2, but
Speaker: But it's so evocative of Resident Evil 2 without being really chained up to the original source material.
Speaker: Like we've talked about before, she knows when to...
Speaker: streamline things when to leave certain things out and keep it clipping along while still, uh, evoking the game that it was based on when she's talking about, uh, the creature roaring and stuff.
Speaker: I suddenly in my head had the N64 Mr. X roar thing that compressed, you know, grainy as shit audio, but just played in my head.
Speaker: And I haven't thought of that in years, but I knew exactly what she was talking about.
Speaker: And it just, so it's wonderful for people who've never played through Resident Evil 2, but I think it's also a really nice complement to the game itself.
Speaker: Easily the best in the series so far.
Speaker: Yeah, no, I loved it.
Speaker: It's great.
Speaker: It's a great book.
Speaker: And I think it does a really good job of...
Speaker: Cutting literally, cut literally all of the puzzles out and refined the storytelling to a point where it's just focusing on the character growth and, you know, good descriptions of the action sequences and the monsters and all that stuff.
Speaker: Here's the wild thing is I love puzzles in my Resident Evil games.
Speaker: Oh, it's one of my favorite things.
Speaker: It's one of my favorite parts.
Speaker: Here's the thing about puzzles is they are fucking boring to read about.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: boring to watch other people do they're boring to read about yeah yeah i mean sure dan brown made an entire career about it but um i don't recommend that for literally anybody else um it's it's different from a mystery you know a mystery is one thing but like sitting there somebody trying to solve a
Speaker: you know, national treasure puzzle via text is... And it'd be one thing if this was an adaptation of a straight-up puzzle game, but Resident Evil has so much...
Speaker: blending of genres and that losing the better part of the puzzles doesn't automatically stop it from being an effective adaptation of the franchise.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: How would you adapt Tetris?
Speaker: Oh, man.
Speaker: I'd have to... You know what?
Speaker: My first instinct is to get really postmodern existential on it and write it from the point of view of one of the block shapes.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: Maybe the T. Yeah.
Speaker: And give it an existential crisis or something like that and find out what happens when you get a Tetris and all your blocks disappear.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: I'm just spitballing here.
Speaker: But I can guarantee you one thing, though, Kevin.
Speaker: it would be unreadable.
Speaker: Unreadable.
Speaker: It would be absolute garbage.
Speaker: It would just be the worst steaming piece of garbage.
Speaker: The worst MFA navel gazing you have ever, ever heard of.
Speaker: It would be insufferable.
Speaker: Insufferable work of staggering MFA-ness.
Speaker: Yeah, but I can drag it out to 100 pages, I guarantee.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: 100 pages.
Speaker: Anything over would be a little bit too much.
Speaker: It would either be 100 pages or 10,000 pages.
Speaker: Yeah, you've either got to just be kind to the reader or go full infinite jest on their asses.
Speaker: Yeah, that's kind of where I was going to make an infinite jest reference, but I held back.
Speaker: But then you took it there.
Speaker: You took it.
Speaker: Literary bullshit.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: You took it to infinite jest and...
Speaker: You're there.
Speaker: I agree.
Speaker: I'm the bad guy for that.
Speaker: I took the heat for that one.
Speaker: You just make it like House of Leaves and make it nonlinear.
Speaker: There you go.
Speaker: See?
Speaker: And people will call it art.
Speaker: I did Infinite Gist.
Speaker: You did House of Leaves.
Speaker: We've hit our pretentious long-ass book quota.
Speaker: The long-ass book quota.
Speaker: The pedestal books.
Speaker: Yes, that's a great way of putting it.
Speaker: The pedestal books.
Speaker: We threw water balloons at them.
Speaker: And that's our quarter for the episode.
Speaker: Oh, God.
Speaker: Well, with that all being said, and I know it's only been a few days temporally from when we last recorded, I do have to ask, though, as I want to do at the end of every episode,
Speaker: What are you playing?
Speaker: I'm glad that you asked, though, because I forgot.
Speaker: It has only been a couple of days, but I forgot to mention a game that I did finish in the past week or so.
Speaker: In addition to my gaming of Far Cry 6, which is continuing.
Speaker: Basically, I feel the exact same way.
Speaker: It is in a very enjoyable game.
Speaker: playable experience but I feel like a lot was lost in this particular adaptation.
Speaker: But I'm going to finish it because I'm just a man.
Speaker: We're just innocent men.
Speaker: We're just innocent men.
Speaker: We're just normal men.
Speaker: I introduced my wife to that for the first time a few days ago.
Speaker: And I was like, and in my head, I was like, I don't know if she's going to go for this.
Speaker: She lost her fucking mind.
Speaker: It's like, yes.
Speaker: All right.
Speaker: It's like one of those things you either laugh at or you don't.
Speaker: I can't get enough of it.
Speaker: It's my, what is it, Out of Touch Tuesday?
Speaker: Yeah, the Out of Touch Tuesday.
Speaker: It's my Out of Touch Tuesday.
Speaker: Yeah, we're just normal men.
Speaker: We're just normal men.
Speaker: Yeah, I love it.
Speaker: We're just innocent men.
Speaker: Just innocent men.
Speaker: I love it.
Speaker: But I did, in addition to my Far Cry 6 shenanigans, I did beat Case of the Golden Idol.
Speaker: Fantastic.
Speaker: Which I quite enjoyed.
Speaker: Just another one of those.
Speaker: Damn, if I'd played this last year, there's a very good chance it would have been on a game of the year list for me.
Speaker: Not so obtuse as like an Obra Dinn.
Speaker: but still very challenging.
Speaker: And it's one of those puzzle games that it's a very rare thing for me to have.
Speaker: You know how the joke is a person writes LOL and you cut to them and they've just got a complete frown on their face?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I mean, I've played games that make me feel unbelievable joy and I'm still just sitting there...
Speaker: Blank faced, leaned back 14 chins.
Speaker: But every now and then a game will actually- But one of those chins is smiling.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Oh, at least one of the chins is smiling.
Speaker: And there are a few games that have made me actually feel like a self-satisfied kid.
Speaker: One of them that comes to mind is Shadow of the Colossus when the remaster of that came out a few years back.
Speaker: And playing that caused so many times of me literally cheering at my desk while I played it.
Speaker: Uh, and this is one of those games that when I, when I solved a particularly difficult puzzle or level or something like that, I was literally
Speaker: you know, hooting and hollering over here.
Speaker: Just so pleased with myself because I was obsessed with, I'm going to do this and I'm not going to check the hints.
Speaker: I just, I was obsessed with that.
Speaker: I have to really stick through it.
Speaker: And I did.
Speaker: And it just, it was one of those, it was like beating the Sunday New York Times crossword.
Speaker: You know, it was just a very, very satisfying feeling.
Speaker: That's what I say is a lot of puzzle games will end up, it's that kind of satisfaction.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: is is a crossword puzzle type of satisfaction it's just like it just yeah you feel me clever you feel like you feel you feel sated like I just just I I felt uh uh full by the end of it and it was it was lovely uh so I I really enjoy that one uh Kevin what what have you been playing what are you playing
Speaker: Nothing new other than Far Cry 6 in the past two days.
Speaker: Honestly, I don't even think I've launched a game between the last episode.
Speaker: Fair enough.
Speaker: I'm not sure I actually got a moment to go play.
Speaker: I have been playing...
Speaker: What I want to talk about is the fact that I have been playing threes obsessively for the past couple of years.
Speaker: So what happened was friend of the pod, hot cider had a...
Speaker: collaboration, a mini mixtape essay thing.
Speaker: It was called One Minute... Another Minute Remaining, where you had one minute to talk to write a little mini essay about a game or whatever.
Speaker: I talked about threes.
Speaker: And...
Speaker: I hadn't actually played it in a few years.
Speaker: When I did that essay, I reinstalled it and just started playing it again just to get the vibe of it so I could write the essay.
Speaker: But since then, all right, so right now, let me go to my stats on threes.
Speaker: It's actually, it's adding up the games I've played.
Speaker: You can see it going up.
Speaker: It's not going to stop anytime soon.
Speaker: Starting to look like my civilization hours.
Speaker: This is my Civ right here.
Speaker: This dumb fucking game.
Speaker: There we go.
Speaker: Now the stats are populating.
Speaker: Holy shit.
Speaker: That's crazy.
Speaker: 8,738 games.
Speaker: I have reset this.
Speaker: I have reset the data on the app.
Speaker: three times in the past two years.
Speaker: Wow.
Speaker: So the actual number.
Speaker: I was literally about to say, well, three years or so.
Speaker: Like, that makes sense.
Speaker: No, no.
Speaker: And the actual number is probably over 20,000.
Speaker: That's amazing.
Speaker: And because, like, I've gotten to.
Speaker: So I'll get to 1536, the 1536 card.
Speaker: And then after a while, I'll be like, all right, fine.
Speaker: I'll reset it.
Speaker: And I've been able to regularly, not regularly, semi-regularly get back up to this 1536 card, but I have not gotten to the next card after that.
Speaker: So there's two cards left that I need to get to beat the game.
Speaker: The game has an ending.
Speaker: You can beat threes.
Speaker: I have been playing this goddamn game.
Speaker: for over a decade now and I'm still not close to beating it.
Speaker: Will I ever be?
Speaker: No, but I feel like if I do, I immediately rapture.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I think that's yeah.
Speaker: What happened to Kevin?
Speaker: It's like, I don't know.
Speaker: What do you mean?
Speaker: It's like, well, we looked for him and he's just disappeared.
Speaker: It's just a pile of clothing.
Speaker: Just a pile of clothing.
Speaker: I was like, oh, he beat threes.
Speaker: Was he playing threes?
Speaker: He beat threes.
Speaker: Don't worry about him.
Speaker: He's happy.
Speaker: He's happy somewhere.
Speaker: He's in a better place.
Speaker: Don't worry about it.
Speaker: He's all right.
Speaker: This is what he wanted.
Speaker: This is what he wanted.
Speaker: I have to imagine that there has to be like a chat room at the end of it.
Speaker: Kind of like getting over it with Bennett Foddy.
Speaker: When you finally beat the game, it puts you into a chat room with other people that beat the game.
Speaker: I feel like you would have some serious withdrawal.
Speaker: That would be a lot.
Speaker: It's my little... I am not diagnosed with ADHD, but I'm sure I have some form of neurodivergence tendency because I will just sit there while we're watching movies and play this...
Speaker: I'll swipe my little threes all night.
Speaker: I'm just like, and that's the thing is it only, sometimes it only takes like 30 seconds to lose, uh, depending on the RNG.
Speaker: Um, so that's why it's like, you can end up with tens of thousands of games.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Anyway, I play too much threes, and that's... It's a blessing and a curse.
Speaker: I want to beat the game so I can stop playing the game and find something else to replace it.
Speaker: You say that now.
Speaker: You say that now.
Speaker: You say that now, and then I'm just going to be like, well, I might as well just wipe it and start over.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker: Well, what's the next step, I guess?
Speaker: All right, that'll do it for tonight's episode.
Speaker: If you can...
Speaker: Please head on over to our Patreon.
Speaker: Hell yeah.
Speaker: Phil, why don't you tell us a little bit about the Patreon.com benefits that people get when they visit us on Patreon.com.
Speaker: Absolutely.
Speaker: You mean Patreon.com backslash slash the Pixelit Podcast.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: I mean Patreon.com slash the Pixelit Podcast.
Speaker: That's where you want to be, people.
Speaker: Well, we've got all kinds of fun things for you over there.
Speaker: We are actually making a point to have new essay content right there.
Speaker: We're starting off with that.
Speaker: We're going to have that every couple of weeks at least.

Speaker: So we're going to be giving you
Speaker: All kinds of good stuff that way.
Speaker: We've got three membership tiers, one for a dollar.

Speaker: And you get all of that good stuff in addition to a episode by episode shout out from your friends, heroes, and spiritual guardians, Kevin and Phil.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So there's nobody in there yet.
Speaker: So nobody to shout out yet, but thank you to the patrons that are in the lower tiers.
Speaker: We couldn't be doing this without y'all and your support.
