Speaker: So uncruel.

Speaker: They they they they find a way to slip the knife right between the ribs, right?

Speaker: Right between the ribs.

Speaker: You know who never slips a knife right between your ribs?

Speaker: Who's that?

Speaker: Hey there, everybody.

Speaker: Welcome back to Pixlet.

Speaker: My name is Kevin.

Speaker: With me as always is Phil.

Speaker: Stabba, stabba.

Speaker: Stabba, stabba.

Speaker: And today we are continuing our reading, recapping and reviewing of Resident Evil Caliban Cove by S.D.

Speaker: Perry.

Speaker: So, uh...

Speaker: Yeah, this book is a fun book.

Speaker: I'm enjoying this.

Speaker: It's a fun, short little book, and it's a nice romp through a zombie sci-fi horror story.

Speaker: And I give, I give S.D.

Speaker: Perry a lot of credit that to turn, to basically carve something completely new out of the cloth of the Resident Evil verse and make it enjoyable to the point where I'm like, I wish this was, I wish this was one of the games.

Speaker: I, I 100% agree.

Speaker: Every time I have every basically every chapter of this, I've gone.

Speaker: This would have been a good game.

Speaker: Why didn't they make this a game?

Speaker: This is this is pretty good.

Speaker: Like this could have she she gets the branding just right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: While also instilling her own style on it.

Speaker: Like we're not dealing with Japanese melodrama, you know, horror the way that

Speaker: Resident Evil would continue on to become.

Speaker: But for someone's own spin on it, it's very recognizable as Resident Evil.

Speaker: Yes, exactly.

Speaker: So where we left off last time was with Chapter 9.

Speaker: And just as a recap of what happened prior, basically, Rebecca Chambers...

Speaker: In case you're just joining us for some reason for this episode, Rebecca Chambers joined up with this rogue group of STARS agents who are trying to uncover what's going on at a place called Caliban Cove in Maine, which is an umbrella facility where they think there is the leader of the STARS group, David Trapp,

Speaker: He thinks that there's some sort of goodies there for their investigation into how deep the umbrella and stars and general corruption goes.

Speaker: So Rebecca joined up.

Speaker: They they try to do a sneaky, sneaky invasion of Caliban Cove, and that did not work at all.

Speaker: No, they got their boat got flipped.

Speaker: They had to swim to shore and then

Speaker: They got shot at by zombos with guns.

Speaker: They sure did.

Speaker: They sure did.

Speaker: They cut straight to, uh, uh, was it four where they first started using guns or was it five?

Speaker: Uh, well, I know in four they, they were using weapons and throwing things.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: They were armed and there was a dude with a chainsaw.

Speaker: That's true.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: There's the guy with the chainsaw and the bag on his head.

Speaker: Yeah, that guy freaked me out.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So we skipped ahead in an era in this novel.

Speaker: You know, the first era of Resident Evil was very strict in terms of its zombos.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: And we're in the second era here for this one with right.

Speaker: Shooty zombies.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And you know what you could you could say that the transition was was Nemesis, who is a monster who uses guns against.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Notably a rocket launcher.

Speaker: That's that one's kind of hard to miss.

Speaker: Nothing subtle about that one.

Speaker: They've basically escaped the gunfire and they've made it made their way into one of the locked up buildings.

Speaker: It's like a and they found found all these computer terminals and their their hacker, their hacker and marksman Steve, who is

Speaker: He's he's a dreamboat, as we found out.

Speaker: He can do it all, can't he?

Speaker: That's Steve.

Speaker: He can do it all.

Speaker: He's on the cover of Tiger Beat.

Speaker: The cover of Zombie Beat.

Speaker: Zombie Beat.

Speaker: And so in Chapter nine, they're in this room and Steve is looking up information on what's been going on.

Speaker: And they've been giving the infected basically IQ tests, it seems like.

Speaker: And they have a series of IQ tests.

Speaker: So where they go up in terms of how smart the zombies are at problem solving.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So red being the lowest and then green and all that stuff.

Speaker: And one of the things that happens is all the computers, they just shut down and a riddle appears on the screen.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Another riddle.

Speaker: Another riddle.

Speaker: It wouldn't be Resident Evil without riddles.

Speaker: It truly wouldn't.

Speaker: The riddle that pops up is the man who makes it doesn't need it.

Speaker: The man who buys it doesn't want it.

Speaker: The man who uses it doesn't know it.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And for those of you at home, do you know what the answer is?

Speaker: Tick tock, tick tock.

Speaker: Kevin, is it a coffin?

Speaker: It is a coffin.

Speaker: It's a coffin.

Speaker: It's a coffin.

Speaker: But they go with casket or is it the other way around?

Speaker: They start with casket and that doesn't work.

Speaker: And then they try coffin.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Which.

Speaker: Fine.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I mean, if I was writing the like programming riddle into a computer, I probably would have made them both work.

Speaker: Sure.

Speaker: Sure.

Speaker: Just to, you know, because that's kind of a bullshit.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: I think this is actually a really good example of Perry taking something that wouldn't have worked as well in a game and putting it into the book and vice versa.

Speaker: You know, the puzzles that we see in Resident Evil games are

Speaker: as we found out in the first book, don't always translate.

Speaker: They do not.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: And so she but a riddle in a book works.

Speaker: Even if you know what the riddle is, you can enjoy watching people try to figure it out.

Speaker: But it wouldn't have worked as well in, well, this type of game.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: She she knows that she needs to get some puzzles in there and that kind of thing.

Speaker: But she she's also smart enough to know the whole like sword key in the sword lock thing isn't quite as compelling when you're not actually running around looking for the damn right.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: So they after answering it, they kind of they.

Speaker: Or before answering it, Karen and David basically come back and they have a piece of paper that gives a lowdown on the way the tri-squads engage with people.

Speaker: And it's very convenient for...

Speaker: If you're walking around the island because they find out that there's two year there's usually two teams of tri squads and a team and a B team and the B team won't fire or engage until a team has been destroyed.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: So the B team of backup, their permanent backup.

Speaker: So the B teams are just kind of like sitting there just like waiting for the A team to fall apart.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: So and that's that's just and that's another great example of just games in general.

Speaker: It's like, wow, these people sure did leave a lot of easy to find notes hanging around that provide convenient clues.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: They find out that once they answer the riddle, though, they they get some information on

Speaker: how there's a few other tests that they have to solve in order to access the information that's been hidden away.

Speaker: That's been squirreled away for them.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Tests four, seven and nine, blue to access data.

Speaker: So they they are basically understanding what to do next.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That's that it's like the little lowdown chapter of of of this of this section here.

Speaker: It's kind of a it's kind of a safe room sort of moment.

Speaker: Yeah, that's what I was searching for.

Speaker: It's basically like the safe room music is playing right now.

Speaker: And they're getting a minute to actually go through the notes and say, OK, in their reading documents, you know, they're they're in there.

Speaker: They're they're in the inventory screen.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: That's exactly they are.

Speaker: They are rearranging things.

Speaker: Turn it vertical.

Speaker: Maybe we know that's no good.

Speaker: You know, just yeah.

Speaker: That's that's pretty much in in in universe what's happening.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So so they decide to split up.

Speaker: So John and Karen are going to be on one team.

Speaker: David, Steve and Rebecca will be on the other team and they're going to split up and try to try to solve these these tests as quickly as possible.

Speaker: So first we follow what's named David and Rebecca and Steve.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: As they run through.

Speaker: They basically just they run through the.

Speaker: There's all these buildings and I feel like the way the buildings are set up is they're kind of like.

Speaker: in a it's like a long stretch and they're like on either side of there's like four and four or something like that is the way I was picturing it in my head.

Speaker: An actual map wouldn't have hurt in a moment like this.

Speaker: An actual map like, you know, you can publish a map in a book.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Why not?

Speaker: We can we can we can stand to have a half page dedicated to a map.

Speaker: Yeah, just give us figure rocks.

Speaker: Figure a just just to help describe it.

Speaker: A picture is worth a thousand words here.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: Just to help us out.

Speaker: But yeah, yeah, it's it is kind of I did.

Speaker: I did find myself just going, all right, fuck it.

Speaker: The buildings are around.

Speaker: Got it.

Speaker: There's buildings and they're like and I could feel my brain hurting where they're like, all right, you two are going to go diagonally over to this building.

Speaker: We're going to go over this building.

Speaker: And I'm like,

Speaker: All right.

Speaker: Wait, hold on.

Speaker: Oh, God damn it.

Speaker: It gets a little technical at this point.

Speaker: Anytime, really, anytime you want to lose me as a reader, start explaining layouts and logistics of buildings to me.

Speaker: Now you have three degrees north by northeast and I will watch the sun set and base my next movement on that.

Speaker: Great.

Speaker: Great.

Speaker: I'm going to light some incense and go to sleep.

Speaker: I used to, I would read a Tom Clancy book and just skip pages.

Speaker: I would really, I would just read the page, the book and be like, uh, huh.

Speaker: He's still talking about the fucking plane.

Speaker: I've actually never read.

Speaker: Now I was thinking about this the other day because you know, when you think about things like splinter cell and stuff, that's, that's Tom Clancy worlds.

Speaker: We know their books based on that.

Speaker: I've never read a Tom Clancy book, so I figure we'll probably get to it eventually.

Speaker: But eventually, yeah.

Speaker: The only one that I think he wrote the Tom Clancy book that is based on a video game that Tom Clancy actually wrote, I think, is Rainbow Six.

Speaker: No kidding.

Speaker: OK.

Speaker: OK.

Speaker: And the length is very much Tom Clancy.

Speaker: It is a Rainbow Six is a big fucking book.

Speaker: It's going to it's going to take us.

Speaker: It's going to take us a couple of months.

Speaker: That's what you say.

Speaker: And that's like a that's like a ten episode.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Beast.

Speaker: Now they do while they're describing all the buildings and everything like that, they they seem to be like preoccupied with basically the hypotheticals of like

Speaker: are zombies out there like are we going to get are we sitting ducks out here?

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: They so they they do run across and so the team a so so so your David's your Rebecca's your Steve's they dart through the dark and they managed to get into the building that they intended to get into is basically the way I'll say that.

Speaker: Yeah, pretty much.

Speaker: They succeed.

Speaker: They succeed.

Speaker: When they get in there, though, they find a gigantic pile of decomposing bodies.

Speaker: Yes, they do.

Speaker: Yes, they do.

Speaker: Yes, they do.

Speaker: And Steve immediately throws up.

Speaker: I love it.

Speaker: I love it.

Speaker: What's that?

Speaker: Oh, it is.

Speaker: It is basically that.

Speaker: The description is grotesque.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: Holy shit.

Speaker: She can write some gore.

Speaker: She can write some gore.

Speaker: I'm trying to find the exact.

Speaker: Oh, here we go.

Speaker: David saw that there was no way to be certain.

Speaker: The bodies had started to melt into one another.

Speaker: The blackened, shriveling flesh of the stacked corpses blending and pooling from the humid heat.

Speaker: Maybe 15, maybe 20.

Speaker: Wretching.

Speaker: Steve stumbled away and threw up.

Speaker: What the fuck?

Speaker: Like...

Speaker: Like it's enough to describe decomposing bodies and, you know, exposed, you know, you know, uh, uh, organs and bones and shit, but they're like to literally say that the heat is causing them to melt together, you know, like not literally, obviously, but basically the corpses are liquefying in a giant pile.

Speaker: That's pretty revolting.

Speaker: It's really good.

Speaker: It's pretty revolting.

Speaker: So,

Speaker: That's where we leave them.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: And what a place to leave them.

Speaker: Now we have our adventures of Karen and John sexually harassing her.

Speaker: And this is the real meat of the story.

Speaker: I think this is what we've all been waiting for.

Speaker: This is the truth.

Speaker: This is what we wanted.

Speaker: Good God.

Speaker: All right.

Speaker: All right.

Speaker: I want to point out real quick.

Speaker: We have we have discussed Perry likes to write some thirsty characters.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: And and what we're not dealing with is actual sexy times.

Speaker: Like, I don't think there he's actually into her.

Speaker: It's just like how he quips and right.

Speaker: But yeah.

Speaker: It's just them covering their own area and him making the stupidest.

Speaker: Like he says something about I'll go in first.

Speaker: It's the way I like it.

Speaker: Here we go.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: John couldn't help himself.

Speaker: My women always go first, he whispered, though I prefer it when we go together.

Speaker: If you know what I mean.

Speaker: I highlighted that and wrote LOL next to it.

Speaker: I kind of wish Karen would have looked at him and gone, no, I don't know what you mean.

Speaker: Explain it in full detail, please.

Speaker: And then in a thought, in a italicized thought that John has like a paragraph down, it says, it's my duty to help her lighten up.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: John is every white male standup comedian I've ever shared a stage with.

Speaker: John is John is black, by the way.

Speaker: Is he?

Speaker: Good.

Speaker: Keep that in.

Speaker: Keep that in.

Speaker: Keep that in.

Speaker: I want that.

Speaker: I want everyone to hear that.

Speaker: That's that was that just like the whole like I'm healing her with my shitty jokes.

Speaker: Yeah, I'm making her better.

Speaker: Smile, sweetheart.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: It's not it's not.

Speaker: And the thing is, is it's not so malicious as as what kind of stuff, obviously, that gets talked about nowadays, but it hasn't aged well.

Speaker: No, it hasn't aged well.

Speaker: And also, I mean, Karen and John have known each other for a long time.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: From what I understand.

Speaker: But also it's.

Speaker: She nodded briskly, stepping back to let him by.

Speaker: So basically the discussion is who's going to who's going to go, who's going to lead like.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: And ultimately decisions.

Speaker: John's going to go out first.

Speaker: He's going to cut through the courtyard first and then Karen's going to follow.

Speaker: And John, as he leaves, he's briefly considered telling her that he'd greet her at the door wearing nothing but a smile.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But then he goes, nah, gotta be professional.

Speaker: But he decided against it.

Speaker: They'd worked together for almost five years.

Speaker: And he knew from experience that he could only go so far before she got pissy.

Speaker: Before HR got involved.

Speaker: Besides, it was a good line and he didn't want to waste it.

Speaker: Oh, John, John.

Speaker: Johnny boy.

Speaker: That's a good line.

Speaker: That's comedy gold right there.

Speaker: That's comedy.

Speaker: Don't fuck around.

Speaker: You save it.

Speaker: Savor that joke.

Speaker: John, you saved that line.

Speaker: It's like a welcome steak.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, John, buddy.

Speaker: You're healing the world with comedy, my friend.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Jesus Christ.

Speaker: So basically what happens next is John, while the other team was able to get to their building and there was basically nobody fired on them, it's the immediate opposite happens.

Speaker: John is going the other way.

Speaker: He's and he's immediately under fire by by a tri squad shooting their their little machine guns at him.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: He manages to take two of them down

Speaker: and he gets inside a building and he's like sitting in the building, you know, under under the cover, trying to, you know, not get shot.

Speaker: And he turns around and he sees two zombies just standing there staring at him.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And he realizes it's a good moment.

Speaker: He realized he starts putting it together like, oh, OK, this is what they mean by team.

Speaker: The B team won't engage.

Speaker: This is the B team for that tri squad.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: So he basically are here.

Speaker: They are.

Speaker: So like Karen starts shooting at the remaining zombie and he tells her, don't kill it because the other zombies like won't activate basically as long as one is still standing.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: So they end up, I think they end up killing all of them, though.

Speaker: Yeah, eventually.

Speaker: Eventually, they end up killing all the five that they found.

Speaker: And Karen, when she gets to the building where John is, her first line is, hey, John, was it good for you?

Speaker: Good for you, Karen.

Speaker: Good for you, Karen.

Speaker: You know, give it right back to give it right back to him.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Now, the whole thing with the killing zombies of a certain order thing, doesn't that just feel like actual game mechanics to you?

Speaker: It does.

Speaker: It feels like I was like, I'm not surprised.

Speaker: I'm surprised there hasn't been a Resident Evil that's been like, oh, no, you got to kill the zombies in this order to solve the puzzle.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: That has never happened.

Speaker: I, I, it just, it's good.

Speaker: I wouldn't be surprised if, um, uh, if, uh, uh, I don't know for sure.

Speaker: I mean, Perry must be a gamer on some level, but, uh, it's, it's just, I mean, that just felt like straight up gaming mechanics.

Speaker: And she wrote for the uncharted series, right?

Speaker: And you said, yeah, she sure did.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Um,

Speaker: I mean, it could be.

Speaker: And you know what?

Speaker: And this is off topic, but you know how there's there's games.

Speaker: There's so many games that are like throwbacks to like 90s era games.

Speaker: I feel like the the Resident Evil, like a a Resident Evil fixed camera style game.

Speaker: There hasn't been like a nice big throwback to that.

Speaker: to like the original re one and two style game.

Speaker: I mean, I've seen them out there and they were usually a right.

Speaker: Nothing that's really gotten people excited, though.

Speaker: Nothing that's gotten people excited.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But that was just a thought that it was.

Speaker: Well, it was such a that's a that's a great example of a mechanic that I feel like some people forgot about.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Resident Evil is like a lot of games from that time period, especially that time period where we were still getting really comfortable with 3D graphics.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And you had to deal with, you know, point of view and everything like that.

Speaker: And whereas it's like a lot of games where you talk about how good it is, how amazing it was.

Speaker: And God, I loved the original.

Speaker: It was so good.

Speaker: And if you had to play it now, you'd probably throw your controller against the wall because

Speaker: the twin stick thing and the point of it was it's not the way it inspired a lot of stuff, but it's definitely not the way we do games now.

Speaker: No, no.

Speaker: Things are easier now.

Speaker: That's true.

Speaker: Things are easier now.

Speaker: Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Resident Evil, Dino Crisis.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Silent Hill.

Speaker: Silent Hill.

Speaker: Fatal Frame.

Speaker: No, Parasite Eve was turn based during its combat, I think.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Yes, it was.

Speaker: I never read that one.

Speaker: But yeah, Fatal Frame, that was big into the fixed camera angle.

Speaker: What was it?

Speaker: Is it Clock Tower?

Speaker: Clock Tower.

Speaker: Is that another one?

Speaker: The one with the scissor dude?

Speaker: Yeah, that was Clock Tower.

Speaker: That was Clock Tower.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, that was that was a time like that was a real era there.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Survival horror is not what it used to be.

Speaker: No, no.

Speaker: I mean, and there's still plenty of great horror games coming out.

Speaker: But that specific, in fact, friend of the show, Hot Cider, James, just did a Twitter thread on on Resident Evil 4's user interface.

Speaker: and how it was the first RE game Resident Evil game to have the health and the bullets on the screen.

Speaker: So prior to that, you didn't know what your ammo situation was or your health unless you pause the game.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: The only way to check was on your inventory screen.

Speaker: I didn't think about that, but it's absolutely true.

Speaker: And so he did this Twitter thread and about what's it going to look like in the Resident Evil 4 remake?

Speaker: Is it going to be more like so like Resident Evil 7 where they had you had the bullets on the screen or is it going to be some combination of the old RE4 and like the new where it does show you the health because Resident Evil 7 didn't I don't think had the health on the screen either.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: So we'll see.

Speaker: We'll see how they've bounced back and forth.

Speaker: They have there.

Speaker: There's never been like a really since Resident Evil 4.

Speaker: I don't think there's been a a really

Speaker: solid way that they have decided to show information on the screen.

Speaker: Honestly, I mean, for all my bitching about, um, Resident Evil five and, and, and to a lesser extent, let Resident Evil four, uh, what you can't say, you know, they, they've tried a lot of shit, uh, in that franchise.

Speaker: So you got to give it to them.

Speaker: They have made efforts to keep things fresh.

Speaker: Now, sometimes they fail so hard they fall flat on their face.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But they have tried.

Speaker: They have, yeah.

Speaker: So that's better than many franchises out there.

Speaker: I am curious to see, speaking of horror, how... I mean, there's the Dead Space remake is coming out.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: And I know that the Dead Space remake is probably going to do the same thing that Dead Space did, which was...

Speaker: You know, the spine on Isaac's back would be the health.

Speaker: And you can see the gun's bullet counter on the back of the gun.

Speaker: The other thing I'm interested in is Callisto Protocol.

Speaker: Are they going to do something similar to the way?

Speaker: Because that's being developed by the development is being led by the guys who made

Speaker: the original dead space and are they going to do something similar with health where it's like it's a minimal extremely minimalist ui um now are they is it uh are they throwing around those terms like spiritual successor and stuff like that with yeah yeah yeah it's very much callisto protocol is when you they've shown some stuff from it already from recently it's going to be out in december

Speaker: Somebody said December is that's when you schedule games to be pushed back.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah, probably.

Speaker: So we'll see.

Speaker: We'll see.

Speaker: But that was a tangent related to user interface and hot cider.

Speaker: Hi, hot cider.

Speaker: Not the beverage.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: No, it's a delicious friend, our delicious friend, James.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Go check out his YouTube channel and his podcast, Quest and Show.

Speaker: By all means.

Speaker: Anyway, they make it in.

Speaker: They make it in.

Speaker: They make it in.

Speaker: And the last line of the chapter is, and after a beat, they both started to laugh.

Speaker: We're friends.

Speaker: We're friends.

Speaker: We cut back to Rebecca, Steve and David, and they're still recovering from the grossness.

Speaker: They're not feeling so hot.

Speaker: You're not feeling so hot.

Speaker: David basically is like, all right, you two wait here.

Speaker: I'm going to go, you know, solve this puzzle or whatever.

Speaker: And while he's gone, we get some moments between Rebecca and Steve.

Speaker: Yes, moments with a capital italics.

Speaker: With a capital italics.

Speaker: We're getting really cutesy here with these two.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: We got a they hold hands, right?

Speaker: Like that's not yet.

Speaker: They haven't held hands yet.

Speaker: They do not yet.

Speaker: They will, though.

Speaker: They have they exchange a glance, which a glance lingering a few beats longer than a more casual exchange.

Speaker: It's described as and then Rebecca and then Steve looks away and Rebecca is thinking to herself.

Speaker: There was a definite attraction there and it seemed to be mutual.

Speaker: And then she interrupts her own thought with, and it's only about the worst time and place to consider it.

Speaker: Her mind snapped.

Speaker: Secure that shit pronto.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You know what?

Speaker: Correct.

Speaker: Correct.

Speaker: Rebecca.

Speaker: Correct.

Speaker: She just, she gets really, she gets really space marine on herself.

Speaker: Stow that shit Hudson.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: How do I get this out of this chicken shit outfit?

Speaker: Like, yeah, she's trying.

Speaker: Bless her heart.

Speaker: Bless her heart.

Speaker: She's trying to be a Marine.

Speaker: That's all trying to be.

Speaker: She's trying to be a Marine, not at just any Marine Marine, the colonial Marine, colonial Marine.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: Hundreds of years before that will be necessary.

Speaker: She is.

Speaker: She is stowing that shit.

Speaker: She is indeed.

Speaker: So they find they're looking around this room and they find a journal entry from a dude, Tom Athens, and they find out from the journal entry that there was a spill in or there's an issue in in in room and block D room 101.

Speaker: And that's the room where that they were injecting people.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: And that's like and that's like that's relevant information.

Speaker: Oh, absolutely.

Speaker: And they basically they've really like, all right, well, if we're in a they finally figure out like we're in a that means, oh, well, Karen and John went to D and then they're like, oh, shit.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: They have a they have a Luke Skywalker.

Speaker: That means they'll be home and, you know, running.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: The poor Karen and John or Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru for.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: And they say and the thing is, they emphasize, they keep going, well, look, you know, if it's about, you know, wounds and stuff like that, we know they'll be safe.

Speaker: They'll be fine.

Speaker: But we better go check on them right now.

Speaker: I just imagine them cutting to the two of them, just licking the walls, talking about the snozzberries, taking like snozzberries.

Speaker: They're going to be safe.

Speaker: I know it's fine.

Speaker: Oh, this wall is delicious.

Speaker: They're professionals.

Speaker: They'll be fine.

Speaker: Somebody left an open bottle of Coke.

Speaker: Huh?

Speaker: It's still fizzy, too.

Speaker: Have you ever seen?

Speaker: Look at this Coke.

Speaker: Try this Coke.

Speaker: It's still good.

Speaker: Don't worry about wiping it.

Speaker: It's fine.

Speaker: Everyone's dead.

Speaker: Everyone's dead.

Speaker: What are we going to catch?

Speaker: Come on.

Speaker: Come on.

Speaker: And then and then Willy Wonka does his little thing and the Oompa Loompas come out.

Speaker: And Karen just starts inflating into a horrible, pustulating blueberry.

Speaker: Starts floating away.

Speaker: I get ahead of myself.

Speaker: Yeah, we get ahead of ourselves and maybe by then I'll have a Oompa Loompa song thought out in my head.

Speaker: Oh, that'll be good.

Speaker: You know you need to do that.

Speaker: I know.

Speaker: I really am really hoping that I can think of an Oompa Loompa song.

Speaker: I'm not sure I will.

Speaker: Meanwhile.

Speaker: Meanwhile.

Speaker: david is solving a puzzle good good well done david good good for you david we're all brownie he he basically and what what's hilarious is that they they say that this is like the the dumbest puzzle of the puzzles that they have to solve and i'm like the puzzle that they that is given is like this is not the dumbest puzzle uh

Speaker: This isn't bad.

Speaker: I mean, this is pretty tough.

Speaker: It's not rocket science.

Speaker: It's not rocket science, but basically he finds a chessboard and a series of numbers.

Speaker: And Trent's

Speaker: or yeah, Trent's clue lets him remember that it's it's it's something about letter and number reversal.

Speaker: So he it's like A is 26.

Speaker: And then he he figures all the the numbers out and the letters spell out Rex marks the spot.

Speaker: And so he's looking at the chessboard and he says, well, Rex is Latin for king.

Speaker: So he touches the king and that does that solves the puzzle.

Speaker: Basically, he gets it.

Speaker: That's pretty good.

Speaker: That's pretty good.

Speaker: That's a pretty good puzzle.

Speaker: And I know because I would be in there looking for a dog.

Speaker: I see Rex marks the spot and I go, here boy.

Speaker: Here's Rex.

Speaker: Rex's got the key, doesn't he?

Speaker: Rex's got a key.

Speaker: I've been searching.

Speaker: No dog.

Speaker: No dog at all.

Speaker: No dog.

Speaker: I had to turn around.

Speaker: I thought my dog was in the room with me, but...

Speaker: He's not.

Speaker: Sometimes he just sits so still.

Speaker: He curls up in a little ball and he's so still that you forget that he's there.

Speaker: But he is not there right now.

Speaker: Not this time.

Speaker: Not this time.

Speaker: So one of the things that I love about S.D.

Speaker: Perry is that she writes in her, all the stuff takes place in real time.

Speaker: So when we cut back to Karen and John,

Speaker: They've already done the stuff that people like, like we cut back to them after having found room 101.

Speaker: Right, right.

Speaker: We don't have to go back and forth and back and forth.

Speaker: We're not.

Speaker: There is.

Speaker: She doesn't.

Speaker: She doesn't jump in timeline when she writes.

Speaker: She keeps everything very linear in time, which I appreciate.

Speaker: I know some writers can work to.

Speaker: She did it with the first book, too.

Speaker: I know some writers will play fast and loose with time in terms of like, like, oh, this scene, like, oh, this scene took like 30 minutes ago in this scene and never this, this, this is good.

Speaker: I like this.

Speaker: I like this formatting.

Speaker: Basically, it's after they've already been in the room and Karen is is.

Speaker: Karen and John are just kind of sitting there shell shocked about what they found in the room.

Speaker: And they're just kind of like thinking and talking about like that was fucked up.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Oh, that sucks.

Speaker: Oh, OK.

Speaker: Oh, geez.

Speaker: Now.

Speaker: So they found the they basically found the room where people were being injected.

Speaker: There's gurneys, there's blood everywhere.

Speaker: It's gross.

Speaker: There's just piles of needles in the sink.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: It is really it's surprising how when based on the descriptions that Perry does here, how infrequently the this is the setting in an actual Resident Evil game.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Like you don't get a lot of rooms that are just covered in corpses and blood.

Speaker: And right.

Speaker: It's it's genuinely surprising.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So they're basically just kind of chilling out in the hallway.

Speaker: And and David, the other team walks in.

Speaker: They're like, hey, come back here.

Speaker: And meanwhile, Karen's eye is itching.

Speaker: Don't don't miss that part.

Speaker: small detail that's mentioned a couple times in power within the within the scope of like a dozen paragraphs or or more maybe 20 paragraphs there's there's like a couple of like one or two sentences about karen's eye itches right right don't forget that she rubbed it for a second you're like she rubbed it oh oh god oh

Speaker: Karen.

Speaker: So basically David meets up with John Karen and he's like, whatever you do, don't go in room 101.

Speaker: We already went in.

Speaker: It wasn't a big deal.

Speaker: We didn't touch anything.

Speaker: We don't have any open wounds.

Speaker: It's fine.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I was like, no, well, damn, I wish you'd said something.

Speaker: We were doing shots of blood.

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: We're doing blood shots.

Speaker: Yeah, you know, like you do.

Speaker: I did not think of an open-open song.

Speaker: I would have done the same thing.

Speaker: Chapter 11.

Speaker: But before we get to chapter 11, we're going to pause and have a word from our sponsors.

Speaker: Please don't make me read this.

Speaker: Tonight's broadcast is brought to you by Spaniel's Goat Blood Wine.

Speaker: Now featuring 30% more goat blood.

Speaker: Spaniels, grab a bottle and grab the floor.

Speaker: And we're back thanks to today's sponsor, Spaniel's Goat Blood Wine.

Speaker: So good.

Speaker: So, so good.

Speaker: What would you pair that with, by the way, Phil?

Speaker: I would actually, I find that the location of the goat in question when you sacrifice its blood is an important distinction, but in general, pepperoni pizza.

Speaker: Oh, okay.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Now, if it's only a, it's only a champagne goat blood if the goat is sacrificed in the champagne region of France, correct?

Speaker: That's right.

Speaker: That's right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And, uh,

Speaker: Some people don't realize, but it actually doesn't matter where the goat was born as long as it was sacrificed.

Speaker: Got it.

Speaker: In Champagne.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That's good to know.

Speaker: That's the key.

Speaker: That is the key.

Speaker: So chapter 11.

Speaker: Chapter 11.

Speaker: What a good chapter.

Speaker: It's a good chapter.

Speaker: We get some more unhingedness from Dr. Nick.

Speaker: Oh, absolutely we do.

Speaker: He's...

Speaker: I love he just like he's still just hopping back and forth with that manic energy, isn't he?

Speaker: He is.

Speaker: He is hopping mad.

Speaker: He is.

Speaker: He is basically has moments of

Speaker: clarity and then just he is on the verge of frenzy other times.

Speaker: I love that he's because he's like, he starts to really, he's like, oh, he's got, I better hide.

Speaker: Like I actually probably should hide.

Speaker: That would be better.

Speaker: And then I'll strangle them myself.

Speaker: I'll kill them all.

Speaker: Just,

Speaker: That's how you know you're dealing with a high quality standard of villain.

Speaker: It's just.

Speaker: So in this chapter, Dr. Nick basically recounts how he killed everybody.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Who the order in which he killed people, all that fun stuff.

Speaker: Just.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then he's also having trouble remembering all the details because some of the murders happened when he was in just an absolute frenzy.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: He doesn't he doesn't actually remember them until he like gets back into that mindset where he he he had he basically had a scalpel and was just slitting throats.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And he was just covered in blood at one point.

Speaker: It's an exposition dump that actually is dumping a bucket full of blood.

Speaker: It's a bucket of blood dump.

Speaker: It talks about how once he found Ammon, he basically carved him up.

Speaker: He was the one who put him up on the door with the fishing wire and all that stuff.

Speaker: Yeah, we get the full if you wanted to know how the hell all this shit ended up this way.

Speaker: Oh, believe me, you will find out.

Speaker: You will find out.

Speaker: There's no like mystery behind.

Speaker: No, behind any of it.

Speaker: Like, no, this guy, Dr. Nick, literally put the bodies in the pile in that one room and also strung up the other dude on the door.

Speaker: She does everything but give you the time codes.

Speaker: Like it's not coy.

Speaker: It's pretty clear.

Speaker: It's it's it's clear and it's brutality.

Speaker: Absolutely.

Speaker: There's no no guessing.

Speaker: No, no.

Speaker: This isn't the end of the thing.

Speaker: No, no, no, we don't.

Speaker: We're not going to have like long discussions and we're not going to have long discussions as to whether Keith David is is the thing or not.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: He's not.

Speaker: He's not.

Speaker: He's not.

Speaker: They're both human, but they die.

Speaker: That's it.

Speaker: Everyone knows.

Speaker: Spoilers.

Speaker: Everyone knows.

Speaker: David Cronenberg's The Thing.

Speaker: Masterpiece.

Speaker: That's a deep cut.

Speaker: That only works.

Speaker: You're not going to know that reference unless you listen to It's Probably Not Aliens.

Speaker: Probably, yeah.

Speaker: They called the thing David Cronenberg's David Cronenberg's.

Speaker: Yeah, you should you should listen to you should listen.

Speaker: It's probably not aliens.

Speaker: It's a great show.

Speaker: So they they they moving on, they're doing more tests.

Speaker: They there's this there's there's this test where they have all these colored pieces in front and they have to lay them out in order and they all have a letter on them.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it's a rainbow.

Speaker: So at first he put some Roy G. Biv.

Speaker: But then he they figure out that it's like, oh, it's it's the months you got to.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I liked that one.

Speaker: That was one I would have been I would have actually.

Speaker: probably been chomped on by zombies, still trying to fucking figure it out.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So and then John just goes, oh, it's the month.

Speaker: So we put them in order.

Speaker: MJ, you're like, oh, I'm an idiot.

Speaker: God, there it is.

Speaker: Thanks, John.

Speaker: And then, yeah, no, if you were doing it, you would be standing there staring at the puzzle.

Speaker: And in the distance, you would have you would be hearing X going to give it to you.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Huh.

Speaker: Huh.

Speaker: Wonder what that means.

Speaker: The music's distracting, guys.

Speaker: I'm not learning this any faster.

Speaker: You ever seen that mod for Resident Evil 2 remake?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Where instead of footsteps, it's X going to give it to you.

Speaker: I freaking loved that one.

Speaker: Like that was that was that was a meme.

Speaker: Some of these.

Speaker: All right.

Speaker: Now, look, I'm old.

Speaker: And some of these memes, as you have noticed, if you if you follow me and Kevin on Twitter, you will see instances of me literally just popping in to go.

Speaker: I don't understand what you're talking about.

Speaker: I don't know what this means.

Speaker: And that was a meme I could get fully behind all of the Resident Evil 2 remake X tropes and memes.

Speaker: I loved that one.

Speaker: That was good.

Speaker: Sometimes you kids and your meme-age I find quite a chuckle.

Speaker: RIP DMX, by the way.

Speaker: Was that last year?

Speaker: Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Two years ago.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: A couple of years ago, I think.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So they solve the test and then there's more there's more funny, thirsty, flirty talk where David says we should get moving.

Speaker: See how Steve and Rebecca are making out.

Speaker: And then John responds.

Speaker: Interesting way of putting it, David.

Speaker: Nice one.

Speaker: And by the way, while all this is happening, Karen is losing it like like she's starting to sweat.

Speaker: Karen is her eye is turned red.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: It's not.

Speaker: She's not in good shape.

Speaker: And they're asking.

Speaker: They're like, hey, they at one point say like, are you doing OK?

Speaker: She's like a fine head hurts.

Speaker: And it just head is itchy.

Speaker: It's such a great example of like in zombie movies, pretty much specifically where it's like, like, well, I'm just it's just it's just I'm just holding a rag over my arm for no particular reason.

Speaker: I'm not bit.

Speaker: It was they're over there trying to figure out a riddle.

Speaker: I expected one of them to be like, hey, Karen, you're turning into a real zombie over there.

Speaker: Anyway, I think it's the months when you add up the letters.

Speaker: They just seem really nonplussed.

Speaker: If if if if we were in a team and the biologist had said, you know, there's a really good chance that people, if you're not careful, could catch a horrible disease.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: And I noticed suddenly out of the clear blue sky, one of our team members sweating and like having headaches and eyes are red, all that fun stuff.

Speaker: I know that's meanwhile, Rebecca and Steve are having a tender moment.

Speaker: Yes, they are.

Speaker: They're looking up some bullshit about the virus.

Speaker: That's not super important.

Speaker: It's just like, oh, the virus moves faster, which I think we had already established based on one of Dr. Nick chapters.

Speaker: But now Rebecca knows it, that the something about the amplification, which is the speed at which the virus moves.

Speaker: infects somebody has been increased to a matter of hours instead of days.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: But then they get startled about with with John and everybody coming into the building that they end up holding each other's hands.

Speaker: They hold hands.

Speaker: They hold hands.

Speaker: It's like a couple of seals that don't want to float away from each other.

Speaker: Oh, oh, that's so sweet.

Speaker: Anyway, Karen's going to die anyway.

Speaker: And

Speaker: They hold hands and then they're like, they're like, oh, by the way, John says, get your clothes on kids.

Speaker: You've got company.

Speaker: John, you know, can't he can't go more than a couple of pages without saying something like that.

Speaker: Oh, John.

Speaker: Oh, John.

Speaker: He's consistent at least.

Speaker: He's a consistent character.

Speaker: He is consistent.

Speaker: That is true.

Speaker: That's just who he is.

Speaker: We're talking before the show about consistent characterization and how in comic books it tends to be a problem because, you know, characters are handled by different writers.

Speaker: But John is a consistent character in that he sexually harasses constantly.

Speaker: Consistently awful.

Speaker: Consistently awful.

Speaker: He's the worst.

Speaker: He's not great.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: He's the John Ralphio of Resident Evil.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: The worst.

Speaker: The worst.

Speaker: Just the worst.

Speaker: My favorite bit is when Ben Schwartz basically sings that into Adam Scott's ear and that just keeps leaning on him until Adam Scott fell over.

Speaker: That is that is my favorite favorite Jean Ralphio moment in Parks and Rec.

Speaker: He just keeps pushing Adam Scott over.

Speaker: I think my favorite Jean Ralphio bit.

Speaker: This is this is what in the show will be known as the Jean Ralphio minute.

Speaker: Yeah, I think it was actually the the covid special they did.

Speaker: Oh, they did all the they put together.

Speaker: It was like a zoom call from their homes.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And and and John Ralphio is like doing a commercial for a friend.

Speaker: It just he just needs any and it just ends with him going.

Speaker: I'm so lonely.

Speaker: And that is something that.

Speaker: Me and my fiance still quote to each other all the time.

Speaker: So lonely.

Speaker: It's it's amazing that in only a few years later, after Parks and Rec ended, that Ben Schwartz would be would be Sonic the Hedgehog, would be Sonic the Hedgehog.

Speaker: And and the actors who played Mona Lisa would be a shell with an eye.

Speaker: I'd have explained to me, remember one of these from Parks.

Speaker: That's her as the as a whatever the name of that anthropomorphic shell is that did you see?

Speaker: Are you know what I'm talking about?

Speaker: No, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Speaker: Hold on.

Speaker: Hold on.

Speaker: It's not Sheldon.

Speaker: It's not so obvious.

Speaker: But I mean, Jenny Slate is the actresses.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker: Thank you.

Speaker: Yeah, thank you.

Speaker: It's it's Marcel the shell.

Speaker: Oh, OK.

Speaker: And they were these YouTube videos.

Speaker: All right.

Speaker: So if you guys don't know what I'm talking about, it was these they were these YouTube videos.

Speaker: It's this little talking show with shoes and it's really cute and it's really and it's actually really very funny.

Speaker: And it's just like people it's like a talking head style documentary kind of thing.

Speaker: But you're just talking to this tiny

Speaker: talking shell and they made a movie of it.

Speaker: And we went to see everything everywhere all at once, which is great, by the way.

Speaker: And and there was a trailer for the movie of this.

Speaker: And I got to tell you, I don't trust in a world where I was like choked up by the end of a trailer for a goddamn talking shell.

Speaker: I don't know if they're getting better at being emotionally manipulative in trailers or if I'm losing my goddamn mind.

Speaker: It's getting really bad.

Speaker: Phil, you're turning 40 this year.

Speaker: That's true.

Speaker: I think there's going to be a lot of... Degradation?

Speaker: There's going to be a lot of... No, I think the wistfulness is really going to start setting in.

Speaker: Yeah, I am absolutely there.

Speaker: I am so soft these days.

Speaker: It doesn't.

Speaker: It takes so little.

Speaker: It doesn't take much to make me cry.

Speaker: It takes so little.

Speaker: I don't have a child and we will watch Tick Tocks and there will be a little kid just saying something cute.

Speaker: I'll be like, oh, it is so sweet.

Speaker: It just it's it's.

Speaker: Everything's going to hell.

Speaker: Speaking of of of videos, there was a guy who was on Reddit today.

Speaker: This is just your in between chapter update on shit we've seen.

Speaker: There's a guy on Reddit who posted a video.

Speaker: He pulled over because there was a kitten in the middle of the road.

Speaker: Oh, I think I know what you're talking about.

Speaker: And he's like, oh, man, you can't be out here.

Speaker: You're going to get hurt.

Speaker: He goes and he gets the kitten.

Speaker: And then he looks up and from the tall grass...

Speaker: Just this this flock of kittens just emerges and surrounds him.

Speaker: And basically, they're all like giving him like the the the puss in boots, like kitten eyes and like begging, begging to be picked up by him.

Speaker: And he's like, I can't take you all.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And then the video cuts to him literally in his car with like 15 kittens.

Speaker: I'm not fucking with you.

Speaker: It's like at least a dozen kittens.

Speaker: Oh gosh.

Speaker: They tricked him.

Speaker: They fucking tricked him.

Speaker: They sent one out and the guy got his attention and then the rest bombarded him.

Speaker: It was it was cute right up until the moment that it actually felt foreboding.

Speaker: I kind of expected one of them to have a sock full of quarters and just whack him on the back of the head like get his wallet and just every time he looked up, there was more kittens coming out of the grass.

Speaker: Ridiculous.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That was the news of this morning in this house.

Speaker: That was did you see the kitten video?

Speaker: And that was.

Speaker: It was.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, God.

Speaker: Oh, God.

Speaker: Whoo.

Speaker: Chapter 12.

Speaker: Zombie kittens.

Speaker: We start with Rebecca could still feel the lingering warmth of Steve's hand in hers.

Speaker: Oh, my God.

Speaker: God, Steve is going to die, isn't he?

Speaker: He has to.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: He has to.

Speaker: This is we can't keep him alive.

Speaker: We can't keep him alive.

Speaker: This is too much of a thing for Rebecca.

Speaker: No, she's got to be a little bit more damaged if she's going to be if she's going to continue on in the Resident Evil verse.

Speaker: You can't have to break her.

Speaker: You can't you can't get good things.

Speaker: You have to know.

Speaker: No, no.

Speaker: The height of your life in terms of mental health was before Resident Evil.

Speaker: before the outbreak started.

Speaker: And it's just down from there.

Speaker: That was your peak.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: Have you seen Chris in Resident Evil 8?

Speaker: He is just a jackass in a trench coat walking around with a dumb haircut.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yes, absolutely.

Speaker: Yeah, he is completely transformed.

Speaker: No, Rebecca, no, Steve, there's no way Steve's surviving.

Speaker: And the only the only way this ends is if he dies, preferably her killing him to save him in the face.

Speaker: She's going to have to shoot in the face, right in the face, in the face.

Speaker: And it's going to be like a moment.

Speaker: Well, you know, I'll get I'll get to it later.

Speaker: I'll get to I'll get to what I think it should be like later.

Speaker: OK, it's where what are our playing segment?

Speaker: So, yeah, basically, they do a quick recap as to what the F is going on.

Speaker: And then David's like, can you Rebecca, you're you're a medic.

Speaker: Can you take a look at what what's going on with Karen's face?

Speaker: Sure, sure.

Speaker: And it's like it's like David Cronenberg's The Thing where the face opens up and.

Speaker: Chomps her skull.

Speaker: It's just David Cronenberg's The Thing from now on.

Speaker: David Cronenberg's masterpiece, The Thing.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Just like, you know, John Carpenter's Eraserhead.

Speaker: Or Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather.

Speaker: That one's actually right, though.

Speaker: Yeah, I know.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I went to film school.

Speaker: I didn't attend.

Speaker: Like like like George Lucas's rumble fish.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah, that's a friend.

Speaker: Steven Spielberg's Jaws.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Right, guys.

Speaker: Black eyes like a doll's eyes like a doll's eyes.

Speaker: 200 men went in the water.

Speaker: We could just do a Jaws podcast where all we do is talk about Jaws.

Speaker: We're going to have a bonus episode this year where we just have a bunch of people on doing a quint-off.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh my God.

Speaker: Let's get every other YouTuber and podcaster we know.

Speaker: Let's take the Indianapolis speech, cut it up into pieces and everyone gets to do.

Speaker: Everyone gets a piece of a piece of the Indianapolis speech.

Speaker: Yeah, we do.

Speaker: We do the USS USS USS Indianapolis supercut.

Speaker: Oh, that's genius.

Speaker: No one will care.

Speaker: It's great.

Speaker: Great.

Speaker: Write that down.

Speaker: I will.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Indianapolis.

Speaker: We delivered a bomb.

Speaker: Speech.

Speaker: God, I love that scene.

Speaker: I love it too.

Speaker: Anyway, Karen's like, yeah, I'm fine.

Speaker: It's just a headache.

Speaker: And Rebecca's like, okay.

Speaker: Yeah, she kind of, yeah, she just...

Speaker: Rebecca is a little too... So basically, she's in the middle of inspecting Karen and is like when they accidentally trigger the test.

Speaker: And there's like an ominous countdown clock associated with this.

Speaker: So they're like, I guess we have to solve it pretty fast.

Speaker: Yeah, we're going to break it on this thing.

Speaker: Can you guess...

Speaker: listeners at home what the riddle is.

Speaker: And it may have been just been featured a year or two before in a blockbuster movie.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: The riddle is the St.

Speaker: Ives riddle.

Speaker: A riddle that I think we've referenced more than once on this pod.

Speaker: I think we've actually referenced St.

Speaker: Ives several times.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: For those who don't recall what it is.

Speaker: Mm hmm.

Speaker: As I was going to St.

Speaker: Ives, I met a man with seven wives.

Speaker: The seven wives had seven sacks.

Speaker: Seven sacks held seven cats.

Speaker: Hold on.

Speaker: Let me switch over to the seven cats had seven kittens.

Speaker: Cats, sacks, and wives.

Speaker: How many were going to St.

Speaker: Ives?

Speaker: I had to slip in a little Jeremy Irons at the end there.

Speaker: Yeah, that's good.

Speaker: So basically, they're arguing with each other that there's a there's a hint from Trent that says don't count.

Speaker: And they finally realize that it's it's it's 777.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: That's the answer.

Speaker: That's how many were going to say knives.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Kind of an anticlimactic riddle, but at least they got it right.

Speaker: So they're they're actually trying to do the math.

Speaker: And then and then Rebecca says it's one.

Speaker: Only one person is going to St.

Speaker: Ives, much like.

Speaker: In Die Hard with a Vengeance, when that's one of the the the riddles and then what I'm trying to remember that scene.

Speaker: Oh, that he fucks with him in that scene.

Speaker: He's like, he's like, too late.

Speaker: And then there is actually no bomb in the trash can or something like that.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: What a weird movie.

Speaker: It's such a weird movie, but I kind of like it.

Speaker: I liked it, too.

Speaker: I haven't seen it in forever, though.

Speaker: I made it.

Speaker: It's really held on the charisma of Jeremy Irons and Samuel L. Jackson.

Speaker: Absolutely.

Speaker: That's it's it's really held together on that.

Speaker: As far as I'm concerned, Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman are related thanks to that franchise.

Speaker: Yeah, they are.

Speaker: They should be.

Speaker: Rest in peace, Alan Rickman.

Speaker: Oh, yeah.

Speaker: God, we miss you, Alan.

Speaker: We miss him.

Speaker: We miss him so much.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So they they solve the puzzle and now Rebecca can turn her attention back to Karen.

Speaker: She grabs a torch, which I found it interesting that they that S.D.

Speaker: Perry refers to flashlights as torches.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Which is a British thing.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: To call your flashlight a torch, which I just thought that was I just picked up on that.

Speaker: It's an interesting detail.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So they so she's finishing.

Speaker: She's still examining Karen and then they put it together.

Speaker: that Karen accidentally touched the dried blood in the room, room 101, the room of rooms, and then I guess rubbed her eye or something like that.

Speaker: And that's why her eye is getting more and more infected.

Speaker: So Karen is infected with the Zombo virus.

Speaker: Maybe they're actually not even like there.

Speaker: It's funny is like there's a chance that she's not.

Speaker: But let's assume that she is right.

Speaker: And they figure out, Rebecca realizes that if they were working with this virus on site, they probably have an antivirus or a vaccine or something on site as well.

Speaker: Because that would be the only, you know, correct way to do it.

Speaker: You can't you shouldn't be working with a virus that you didn't have a cure for.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Which is which is yeah, which is a terrific idea if you're in a medical area that is being run properly and not full of dead people.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And zombies with machine guns.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And and the only man left on the island or in the cove rather is has fond memories of slitting everybody's throat with a scalpel.

Speaker: Right, right.

Speaker: In that situation, I wouldn't hold out hope.

Speaker: But sure, give it to them.

Speaker: Let them hold out.

Speaker: So they're like, we're going to go... Okay, fuck it.

Speaker: We're going to try to find... We're going to get into the main lab and we're going to find the cure.

Speaker: And... Not that cure.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: Unfortunately.

Speaker: Unfortunately, they...

Speaker: In the distance, they hear, Friday, I'm in love.

Speaker: Saturday night.

Speaker: That would be it that would be a twist that would be worth it It's like oh, there's no cure.

Speaker: It's just the British band the cure the cure.

Speaker: Oh, no Karen.

Speaker: Oh, well Karen's dead great Well, yes great we can dance along Yeah, yeah, I'll be fine She would have wanted us to would have wanted us to um

Speaker: Did they also do what?

Speaker: I'm trying to think of their other song.

Speaker: Did they also do Everybody Wants to Rule the World?

Speaker: Is that the?

Speaker: No, that's Tears for Fears.

Speaker: That's Tears for Fears.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Just to confuse my 80s.

Speaker: I guess New Wave.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I mean, it's around the same time period.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So we have a we have a scene.

Speaker: Basically, the entire thing is John losing his absolute shit.

Speaker: Yes, John is.

Speaker: He is not taking this this Karen news well.

Speaker: No.

Speaker: And I have I've got to ask you this.

Speaker: Now, John, his whole thing is that like they've been working together and he's their close friends and he sees her as his responsibility and he's blaming himself that he should have been there to protect her and everything like that.

Speaker: Even though he was there, he was standing next to her.

Speaker: He could have said, don't touch the blood, but he didn't.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: But he didn't.

Speaker: And that's all very well and good.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: I can't help but think that he is actually upset that he'd been doing all of the inappropriate jokes and now she's dying.

Speaker: No, she's dying, but they're never gonna pay off.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah, right.

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: She's not going to fully enjoy them because she's distracted by her dying.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And I think that's really what we're getting at here.

Speaker: And he saved a joke for her.

Speaker: And that's.

Speaker: And now I mean, what he's in, he's he is it an impossible situation because he has to decide, do I just go ahead and say it because she's going to die?

Speaker: So she needs to hear it, whether it's the optimal time or not.

Speaker: Or do I hold out hope?

Speaker: The impossible dream that we'll have a moment, possibly in her final breath, that I can, I'll be there with nothing but a smile on.

Speaker: And she smiles and dies.

Speaker: And that's what he's hoping for?

Speaker: That's what he's hoping.

Speaker: That's actually his entire character arc.

Speaker: That's that's the whole thing, huh?

Speaker: It is.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He is going to strip naked right before she dies.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Says, I'm worried.

Speaker: Nothing but my smile.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: He smiles at her and she smiles back.

Speaker: And then she tries to bite his dick off.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Succeeds.

Speaker: Succeeds.

Speaker: The end.

Speaker: Fade to black.

Speaker: He bleeds out, turns into a zombie.

Speaker: Yep.

Speaker: Cannon.

Speaker: Cannon.

Speaker: Resident Evil cannon.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Just like that.

Speaker: Just like that.

Speaker: Anyway, yeah, he he loses his shit on a tri squad.

Speaker: He he blasts them to hell with his Beretta.

Speaker: He basically runs at them while they're firing at him.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He has an 80s macho action movie guy moment.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He's very sickly.

Speaker: He's basically the the the one guy in Predator after just the body of Ventura gets killed and he just loses.

Speaker: Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Oh, what's his name?

Speaker: Bill Duke?

Speaker: Is it?

Speaker: Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I think so.

Speaker: Is it the guy who he looks like he needs to sleep like a lot?

Speaker: Is that his name?

Speaker: Yep, Bill Duke.

Speaker: Bill Duke pulled that one out of the... Yeah, he... Bill Duke always looks like he needs a nap.

Speaker: He does, but goddamn, I love that man.

Speaker: I love that man.

Speaker: He is... When I see him in a movie, I'm like, he's gonna be...

Speaker: He's gonna be a awesome character.

Speaker: He's gonna be weird and it's gonna be- He's gonna be weird, a little off-putting.

Speaker: He is six foot four.

Speaker: That is crazy.

Speaker: That tells you something about the cast of Predator that he was like, here's this dude who's six foot four and you don't even notice because- You don't notice, you think he's kind of like one on the smaller side and he is- Right.

Speaker: He is absolutely 100% not.

Speaker: Oh, God.

Speaker: Predator.

Speaker: That was a good movie.

Speaker: I love that movie.

Speaker: I love that movie.

Speaker: So, yeah.

Speaker: Karen calms him down after he shoots the shit out of.

Speaker: He murders the shit out of some tri-squad.

Speaker: He does.

Speaker: He does.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He murders the shit out of them, runs out of bullets, runs out of bullets.

Speaker: That was the last Tri Squad by their account, though.

Speaker: Yeah, they they found some documentation.

Speaker: Thank you.

Speaker: That's that's that's good.

Speaker: That's the end of that.

Speaker: And with that, we.

Speaker: We finish with our segment tonight as we reach chapter 13 and we will be finishing up this book next time.

Speaker: Next time.

Speaker: Not much left.

Speaker: Not much left at all.

Speaker: We only have like 50 pages left.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So there we go.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Resident Evil Caliban Cove.

Speaker: Speaking of Predator, before we get to what we're playing, have you seen the trailer for Prey yet?

Speaker: No.

Speaker: So basically it's set 300 years in the past and it's a Comanche woman who- Oh, I've heard about this.

Speaker: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker: It was fighting off the predator.

Speaker: I have heard of this.

Speaker: A new trailer just dropped a couple days ago for Prey.

Speaker: I want it to be good.

Speaker: I really hope it's good, yeah.

Speaker: Because there's so much you could do with that.

Speaker: Oh man, I need that to be good.

Speaker: Like, yeah.

Speaker: And both the predator and the alien franchise every now and then they take it back in time.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it, and it works.

Speaker: There was a, there was a one shot of, of like a medieval night taking out a Xenomorph at one point.

Speaker: Oh, that's awesome.

Speaker: If there's, there's all kinds of fun shit you can do with it if you don't need to put it in the far, far distant future.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Or the, or the sweaty streets of Los Angeles.

Speaker: Very sweaty streets.

Speaker: Super sweaty.

Speaker: Gary Busey and being super sweaty.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I need this to be good.

Speaker: Please be good.

Speaker: Please.

Speaker: I'm really looking forward to it.

Speaker: I hope it's good.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So now we move on to our award-winning segment.

Speaker: What are you playing?

Speaker: Love it.

Speaker: Love it.

Speaker: So, Phil, what are you playing?

Speaker: Well, for a minute there, I was I had actually wrapped up all of the achievements on vampire survivors.

Speaker: I had gotten all 105 achievements and I was feeling particularly hollow inside until you pointed out to me

Speaker: about an hour and a half ago that the update for it just came out.

Speaker: Just came out.

Speaker: I have nine more to nine more achievements to to to fight through right now.

Speaker: So so that's going to be happening.

Speaker: But other than that, I actually played a couple of of interesting indie games.

Speaker: Oh, really?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I played one called The Horror of Salazar House.

Speaker: Okay, I have heard of it.

Speaker: I don't think I remember it, but I know of it.

Speaker: Yeah, it's a you you'd like it.

Speaker: It's a point and click horror adventure sort of title.

Speaker: Very inspired by Faith.

Speaker: OK, yes, yes.

Speaker: I've seen I've seen these graphics.

Speaker: You know what?

Speaker: I've seen it because Erdorf, who developed Faith, I think tweeted out development photos of this as it was being made.

Speaker: Okay, yeah, it's a very similar style to that, at least visually.

Speaker: Gameplay-wise, it's kind of an old-fashioned dungeon-crawly-looking adventure point-and-click kind of game where you're in this haunted house and you've got to solve some puzzles.

Speaker: It's pretty short, took like an hour or so to beat.

Speaker: It's got like eight endings.

Speaker: I think you got four or five of them, but you've got these puzzles to do and you it's got some of that alien isolation style stuff where you start to get hunted by this ghost and you have to keep track of where.

Speaker: where it is and chests and stuff like that are so you can hide from it.

Speaker: Got a little bit of rotoscopy sort of thing.

Speaker: Had some it had some really good moments, had had some decent scares, some some really interesting design.

Speaker: The puzzles didn't always make a lot of sense.

Speaker: Sure.

Speaker: They they they were not flawless, let's say.

Speaker: And I and I actually what's funny is the how do you put it?

Speaker: The video style art like the motion stuff was really cool and very low quality, pixelated and really well done.

Speaker: But the still stuff has kind of this weirdly manga like like ninth grader doing manga in their notebook.

Speaker: kind of quality to it.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: That I'm not as big of a fan of.

Speaker: But overall, I think it's one of those things that I forget how much it is.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's not expensive, though.

Speaker: But if you liked Faith and you're looking for more of that sort of style and

Speaker: It's worth a look.

Speaker: I think the... Yeah, so the publisher is Puppet Combo.

Speaker: So for anyone who's like a fan of horror games, Puppet Combo is one of those companies...

Speaker: uh that's kind of just been around they do a lot of uh old style graphics in their games um so they've they've been mostly a developer for most of their existence but recently the last couple years they've been getting into publishing games as well and uh yeah the horror of salzar house is one of the uh one of the games that they published under their label torture star video

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And I'm missing words.

Speaker: It's a great name.

Speaker: Oh, I love it.

Speaker: I absolutely love it.

Speaker: So that was worth a look.

Speaker: And I actually played a it was basically the demo of like the prologue of an upcoming game called Rendezvous Shadows of the Past.

Speaker: OK, which is another point and click adventure title has.

Speaker: I think the best thing I could say for that one, it's it's it's really interesting because it's cyberpunk.

Speaker: sort of game future neon lights, all that stuff.

Speaker: It's set in Indonesia and the developer is from Indonesia.

Speaker: Interesting.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Really, really interesting right off the bat.

Speaker: And the art style, I think, is the best thing about it.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: It's it's also old fashioned pixel based kind of art, but it's gorgeous.

Speaker: The lighting is gorgeous.

Speaker: A lot of the choices they made with the designs for the in game stuff.

Speaker: Again, I'm not as big on they'll do some still images here and there.

Speaker: And they also had kind of a weirdly

Speaker: amateurish anime kind of thing.

Speaker: And I just and I also don't care for that.

Speaker: It's like if your game is pixelated like that, why not just stick with that?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But that's that's just a personal thing.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But but unfortunately, that was like the most I could really recommend it for.

Speaker: It's it's the the designers of very talented visual artist.

Speaker: And I think that's great.

Speaker: The again, the puzzles are pretty random.

Speaker: The

Speaker: It needs better localization.

Speaker: Mm hmm.

Speaker: The you know, it's not your first language.

Speaker: Frankly, how well am I going to get by in your language?

Speaker: Not good at all.

Speaker: No, but it might be worth it to for them to look into.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Better localization with the dialogue and that kind of thing.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: The audio is kind of out of sync, but.

Speaker: But and it's got a combat system.

Speaker: At first, you think you're just playing like a point and click adventure.

Speaker: Yeah, like a lot of the other horror games or whatever, you know, or adventure games that have come out recently.

Speaker: It's like, oh, there's no combat.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But then you've got to do and it would be fine.

Speaker: You know, it's like we got a combat system, whatever.

Speaker: But the combat system kind of sucks.

Speaker: It's not it's like you really should.

Speaker: Don't bother.

Speaker: Don't bother.

Speaker: Put your time into something else.

Speaker: Extract that.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: But I think, you know, again, this is the prologue.

Speaker: They're releasing the full game.

Speaker: I don't think even this year.

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: But I think with some work, you know, and if they're listening to people because it's a free download, you can get it on Steam.

Speaker: Sure.

Speaker: I get the impression they're listening to people and there's there is

Speaker: It's a superficial take on it, but it's gorgeous.

Speaker: And I just feel like if they could, they had a little more work put into the non visual elements of it.

Speaker: They've got something there.

Speaker: It just needs some polish.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Cool.

Speaker: So yeah, that's that's me.

Speaker: What are you playing?

Speaker: I am playing.

Speaker: I started playing Sniper Elite 5.

Speaker: Oh, OK.

Speaker: Because I forget who was was tweeting about it, but I was like, yeah, you know, I'll give it a I'll give it a shot.

Speaker: And it is so much fun.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: OK.

Speaker: And I never get tired.

Speaker: So basically, the rundown is Sniper Elite 5 is I assume it's a continuing story from the previous ones.

Speaker: I don't really know that much about it.

Speaker: But in Sniper Elite 5, you're playing a sniper who is dropped off behind enemy lines and you're literally just there to to

Speaker: kind of soften things up in preparation for D-Day.

Speaker: Like you're you're just you're just doing some shit to make things a little bit easier for for the allies.

Speaker: And the the fun thing about it is it's kind of like recent Mortal Kombat games where it does the X-ray.

Speaker: Yeah, like on recent Mortal Kombat games, there will be some some combos where you'll see somebody like break their ribs or something like that.

Speaker: So if you get a you're playing as a sniper and if you get a good shot, it will cut to a cinematic camera and it'll follow the bullet flying through the air and then

Speaker: As the bullets approaching the person, it'll go into an X-ray mode and it'll show the bullet hitting them.

Speaker: And then like the bones breaking away and like the the the chunks in the viscera as like.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And it's like.

Speaker: It's really cool, but at the same time, it also is like, oh, wow, guns are terrifying instruments of destruction, aren't they?

Speaker: Like I shot a guy in the mouth and it was like, it was like, it just went like this.

Speaker: And basically like all of his teeth just like in jaw just like ripped away.

Speaker: And I was like, that is the worst thing I've ever done in a video game.

Speaker: It's it's yeah, it kind of does.

Speaker: It almost does the opposite of what they're attending.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: In a way, it's like, oh, take a break.

Speaker: But yeah, it's it's really it is a lot of fun, though, playing as as this sniper dude.

Speaker: And

Speaker: The name of the game is not direct confrontation.

Speaker: It's it's all, you know, you know, like setting a truck to malfunction or something like that, running away, getting on your perch and picking guys off as they investigate stuff like that.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: So it's it's a lot of fun.

Speaker: So I've been I've been playing Sniper Elite and sweet, you know, still playing vampire survivors, still trying to catch up to you on on that.

Speaker: Where are you at?

Speaker: I am.

Speaker: I have 101 out of 114 achievements.

Speaker: OK, OK.

Speaker: And I actually got some of the new ones, the new achievements that just dropped today.

Speaker: Is what I got.

Speaker: So and I say we say today that this is a couple.

Speaker: It was like a couple of weeks ago when you were actually hearing this episode.

Speaker: As far as you all are concerned, this is a couple of weeks ago.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And up next on my list of things that I want to play is Card Shark, which is.

Speaker: I saw that today.

Speaker: That looked interesting.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's a new game from Nereal.

Speaker: Their previous game was Reigns, which was.

Speaker: Oh, OK.

Speaker: Which was basically it was like a little kingdom management simulator where you were presented with

Speaker: You were just presented with a card and you chose one of one of two options on how to handle a problem.

Speaker: And you just tried to see how long you could you could live.

Speaker: And then but then there was also hidden like story threads that you had to like engage in.

Speaker: If you figured out like, oh, there's like an Easter egg in this.

Speaker: So Reigns is a really cool game.

Speaker: I want to check out Card Shark, which is a card game that is literally about cheating.

Speaker: You you the goal is to cheat.

Speaker: Oh, that's cool.

Speaker: So you you basically put your playing like poker or something like that, and you just have to figure out the best way to like there's ways to like, from what I understand, there's ways to have like an eight literal ace up your sleeve.

Speaker: Oh, OK.

Speaker: There's ways to like set up mirrors so you can see the the opponent's hand.

Speaker: I got that on my wish list.

Speaker: That looks.

Speaker: I took a look at that and it looked really interesting.

Speaker: And now the goal.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: It's not about playing fair.

Speaker: It's about cheating.

Speaker: That's pretty cool.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: There's been some good games this year.

Speaker: So that's what I, that's what I want to play.

Speaker: Try to get into next.

Speaker: And all of this, we'll, we'll share information about all of these games and probably be posting reviews on all these games on our website.

Speaker: brand spanking new steam group for the Pixel It podcast where you could join and follow along.

Speaker: I will be adding links to that on our website and we'll probably be adding that on our Twitter bio and tweeting it out and all that stuff.

Speaker: So you can also put it in the description of this episode so you can just go.

Speaker: You can follow the Pixel It podcast team group and you can kind of

Speaker: Take a look.

Speaker: All the stuff that we talk about in the What Are You Playing segment and all the things, all the games that are related to the books that we talk about, we will be posting about in the Pixlet Podcast team group.

Speaker: So go check it out.

Speaker: Hell yeah.

Speaker: That will do it for today's episode.

Speaker: If you can, share us.

Speaker: Share us with your friends, your family.

Speaker: Retweet our tweets.

Speaker: Follow us on Twitter.

Speaker: We'd love a good retweet to tweet.

Speaker: Sure.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Bring Phil a Riesling.

Speaker: That's both a suggestion and his Instagram handle.

Speaker: It's mostly just me posting food I've made and wines I'm drinking.

Speaker: And you can follow me on Instagram at pixelatekevin.

Speaker: So that'll do it for tonight's episode.

Speaker: Thank you so much, everybody, for listening and have a good night.
