00:01:02

Speaker
All righty. Well, I said, this is Don Glenn with the NCW report and by my side, as always, I don't know what I'd do without him. The man from Missouri, Russ Robinson. how are things done in the, uh, in the Southern part of Missouri tonight?
00:03:48
Speaker
Uh, just fine, Don. I guess we're getting ready to hit the cold weather. Uh, I hate to give a weather report, but ah I think today we were in the 60s, and it's going to be last 60s day until probably march April or something. Yeah, yeah we've been we've been kind of bouncing around up here, too. I mean, the last couple days, it's been, or yeah, the last day or so it's been a little wet, but had a pretty nice weekend, though, so that was not that wasn't too bad.

NCAA Football Coaching Changes

00:04:14
Speaker
Uh, well, uh, last week when we, or last time we we got together, we were talking about coaching changes and couple of jobs, a power five jobs got their power for, excuse me. I'm going to keep saying power five. I want to keep saying until they put another conference in as a power five. Anyway, a couple of power four jobs did fall off the table.
00:04:34
Speaker
Um, one that, uh, Eric Morris is going to move from North Texas to take over the Oklahoma state job. Okay, I hadn't heard that. Did that happen today? or That just happened, I guess, just to that in the last 24 hours or so.
00:04:51
Speaker
Okay, yeah, all right. And then earlier this week, we late last week, I should say, we found out that James Franklin, the deposed coach from ah Penn State, is now going to take over the reins at Virginia Tech. Mm-hmm.
00:05:08
Speaker
the The Eric Morris, i can i can I can kind of get him wanting to move up out of AAC territory into a power four. um The Franklin's Virginia Tech does intrigue me a little bit. I think it's actually pretty good fit for him, but I just didn't see that one coming.
00:05:26
Speaker
I guess we thought maybe one of the... blue bloodd blood programs with Grant Franklin. But from his standpoint, Don, I think, you know, it makes sense. ACC is wide open. I mean, the Atlantic Coast Conference, that's a wide open football. i mean, Florida State's down, Clemson's down. ah Virginia, you know, it's a โ€“ Virginia and Georgia Tech are the power teams there, and that's just that they're not much of a power teams. can go to in Virginia Tech has a good history.
00:05:56
Speaker
He probably has got the fan support. There's probably money there. They just need a coach who can win. and I think he can go in there and, you know, he could he could quickly dominate that conference. I mean, ah my expectations for Franklin and Virginia Tech high. it's It's like the ACC is like a league waiting to be taken over by somebody. you know Yeah, i I agree with that. I mean, if you look I'm just kind of looking at the standings here in the in the ACC, and and you've got Virginia at the top at nine and two ah Pittsburgh are both Georgia Miami's
00:06:34
Speaker
ah But when you look at how they're being ranked and in the latest power rankings, as I said, we don't have the actual ones yet for this week after the week this weekend's games. But last week, the CFP rankings um had only ah three ACC teams.
00:06:57
Speaker
or two, excuse me, only two ACT, no, three, it was three, ah listed in their top 25, and it was Miami, Georgia Tech, and Virginia, totally ignoring Pittsburgh and SMU, ah which, okay, I get it. I mean, but right now the way it's the way it's shaping up, and um especially in the ACC, look at the schedule they've got coming up this week.

ACC Conference and Playoff Considerations

00:07:24
Speaker
and And for, because we'll get to all this, but if you look at what they've got coming up in the ACC for this week, come on, there we go. You know, Pittsburgh can take down Miami. That throws it into, it you know, they play Miami. um ah Virginia plays Virginia Tech. Let's see, who's the other one?
00:07:51
Speaker
Who's the other one? SMU, where'd they go? Oh, SMU's got California, so they probably won't be tested too hard. But you never know. I mean, it could happen. um You know, so that that conference could still shake up.
00:08:05
Speaker
And you don't know who's going to be playing in that championship game for that conference, ah you know, essentially. so yeah Yeah, exactly. It's it's kind of it's a still a big question. mark who's going do you know Georgia Tech, I think, got beat by Pittsburgh last weekend.
00:08:20
Speaker
um So, you know, anytime someone steps up, it seems a it seems like they falter a little bit. You know, it could still be Miami, you know, coming out of that thing. We'll just have to wait and see. it This week, of course, I'll i'll be telling us a lot. Right, for sure. Georgia Tech play Georgia. that'll probably be another loss for them, I'm guessing. ah i don't know if my I don't know who Miami plays. Are they playing Florida State this weekend? They got Pittsburgh.
00:08:51
Speaker
Pittsburgh, okay. okay you know That'd be a good game. so i know I don't know. Getting back your point, though, I do think that this is actually, like I said, I think it's a good fit for Franklin because he's got a team that you know, it's not, uh, it's not a, it's not a great team, but it's a team that, that he can work with that he can probably build and mold.
00:09:15
Speaker
Uh, and like you said, the ACC as it sits, you know, they're, they're changing so much and beating each other up up so much at the top. All he's really got to do is survive to get there. Yeah.
00:09:26
Speaker
Yeah. I think so. And, uh, you know, I mean, the the ACC is not the big ten or the SEC. He can, I don't know what jobs who came after him, ah You know, if LSU made a run at them or if Florida made a run at them or if, you know, Auburn did. But probably staying out of those โ€“ that SEC probably was wise on his โ€“ I know โ€“ I heard pretty from some of the people I know at Arkansas. they They said that, you know, they made a run at Franklin, you know.

LSU Coaching Speculations

00:10:01
Speaker
Uh, uh, but I don't think he was, you know, if he went to Arkansas, he'd be in a, he'd be looking at the same thing. He was at Penn state, you know, such a rugged league, uh,
00:10:13
Speaker
he was unlikely to improve anything you know, he, he wasn't going to do as good as Arkansas as he did at Penn state. I don't think so. Right. can Go to Virginia tech. He can make some noise and he could be the, he could be the dominant. He could have the dominant program there. Really? I think. Oh, no doubt. No doubt. yeah And you know, you bring up, bru you bring up ah LSU and that has, I, I did, I don't remember.
00:10:38
Speaker
And maybe it was with when Alabama was looking for somebody after saving, but, ah So many names being rumored for LSU. Right. um You know, I mean, who have you heard lately is as a as a top being top candidate?
00:10:54
Speaker
I think they're they're going headstrong for Kiffin, Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss. And he's been quite coy about making the commitment but to Ole Miss lately.
00:11:05
Speaker
He's would keeping kind of been coy, kind of you know not say saying ah kind of being mysterious on what he's going to do. In fact, the Ole Miss athletic director said Kiffin would make his decision after the game against Mississippi State this weekend. I think he's what we've heard. He's been flown down to Baton Rouge with his family, but we also heard he's been flown to Florida.
00:11:27
Speaker
So i think LSU's making an all-out full-court press for Lane Kiffin. And I wouldn't be surprised if they get him. I mean, the fact he's dragging it out so long, if he was hard, if he was really wanting to stay at Ole Miss, if he's really sure, he would have already announced that. They would have announced an extension or something like that. yeah So i think i think um i think I think Kiffin is the one they're after. I think he is.
00:11:52
Speaker
One name that's been popping up, and I know you've seen it on the Gateway thread a couple times, is Drinkwitz from Missouri to to move down to LSU. i' I'm not sure I see that because I just don't think he's the name coach. He's not the high-profile name coach they want.
00:12:12
Speaker
No, I don't think he's got a name. Drinkwitz has done a good job, but I don't think he's the program... elevator that LSU is wanting.
00:12:24
Speaker
Yeah, you know, I follow the Mizzou chatter quite a bit you know, and and i don't I don't go to the Facebook groups or Twitter to find out, but, you know, i follow a lot of the journalists and the beat writers and things like that that that are close to the program.
00:12:42
Speaker
I don't think, i you're right, I don't think, i agree with you, I don't think he is the name they're looking at. i think maybe Florida, um ah Maybe Auburn, but um I think he'd be like a lot of people's second or third choice, really, is what I think.
00:13:00
Speaker
And i don't think he'll go to you know he won't go I don't think he'll go to Arkansas. I don't think he'll try to make a lateral move. If he makes a move, he'll want to go up the food chain. And Florida might be the one, but, you know he's you know, he won't talk about it, but most these coaches don't.
00:13:17
Speaker
So, you know, they won't get through the last game of the season before they say too much. So, no, I don't think Drink will go to LSU. I don't think LSU's โ€“ I think they probably got someone โ€“ if they don't get Kippen, I'm sure they've got someone else in mind oh besides Drinkwitz. I'm sure they i was sure they have a backup plan. Yeah, i well, yeah, I mean their backup plan is is obviously going to be โ€“
00:13:43
Speaker
you know somebody so maybe like you said and in and there's a lot of uh i i you know that's one thing i why reason i say they're going to go after name is i don't think number one i don't think lsu fans will put up with hiring a coordinator uh from anywhere i mean you know unless it's um you know somebody out out of the uh NFL maybe that's got a big name attached to them.
00:14:12
Speaker
So I don't see them going to coordinator out. That's why I think it's going be a coach that's that's um got the record, that's got the ability. and you know So I just think that's where they're going to run.
00:14:24
Speaker
I think so. They'll go for a bigger name. I mean, they can afford it. They're the biggest name out there right now looking for a coach, even bigger than Penn State. So ah I think, you know, they'll get who they want, probably. And I think they will. My guess is they'll get Kippen. But, you know, that's just my guess. You know, who know who knows? yeah Well, like you said, that but you know, it's kind of been the writing on the wall, you know, you know, it's ah you get flown down and They sent a jet for you. That makes that means they're serious, that's for sure. Oh, So let's kind of go over this last week, and ah we'll ah see what happened here. um
00:15:08
Speaker
i know both both you and I kind of took our lumps this weekend, but... ah You know, that, that, that, I, I, I don't want to dwell on it, but I, my bingo card did not include Illinois getting beat by, by ah almost 14 points at Wisconsin or at yeah at Wisconsin. That, that, that was not on my bingo card for the week. Yeah. you Yeah. Because you know, I think it was on the ropes.
00:15:38
Speaker
And the fact he pulled off a win against Illinois, I would guess that sure helps his situation. Yeah, big I mean, but if anything, Fickle kept his job for another year with that win. Right, right, right. You know, like I said, now, yeah you you guys weren't in that battered. I mean, you got beat, but it was by Oklahoma. So, I mean, that's kind of that's legit. you got beat by ah you You got beat by a top ten. So, you you were legit. Well, we got beat by Oklahoma and Norman, and Mizzou hasn't won that game.
00:16:05
Speaker
stadium since 1966. So, I mean, it's โ€“ it was โ€“ history was going against them. And this โ€“ the Oklahoma team's not great, but their defense is first-rate. It's a first-rate defense. They're a playoff-caliber defense. I don't know. You know, they've got to beat โ€“ I forgot who they played this weekend. ah Don, do you have that โ€“ do you have those โ€“ Oklahoma? Yeah.
00:16:32
Speaker
Oklahoma, uh-huh. Let's see. They are โ€“ they're at home versus LSU. Well, okay. I mean, that won't be an automatic win for them, even though LSU. So that would be good. But if they pull that off, then they'll be in the football college football playoff for sure. i'm pretty sure yeah yeah yeah yeah but they'll they'll be in there if They can beat LSU. Yeah.

Football Playoff Rankings Review

00:16:57
Speaker
Right. Right. And, you know, at this point, I mean, I'm kind of going through the games to see where. And, you know, it was really, if you want to go talk about it, the only team that was really upset was Houston got beat by TCU 17 to
00:17:21
Speaker
um No, I take it back. yeah you As you mentioned earlier, the Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech. pi Pittsburgh taking down Georgia Tech, 42-28. That definitely puts Tech on the lower end of of being able to oh you know put their name in the hat for for a playoff berth, for sure. Right. Like you and I have talked, you know the ACC...
00:17:48
Speaker
they're They're going to get one. They have to get one in the playoff. um Exactly. Conference champs got to go in. Outside of that, i like you said, and we talked about it with the Franklin thing, you know they just don't have anybody. I mean, Miami's the highest ranked team in the ACC. They're ranked 13th in the um last week's ah playoff rankings.
00:18:10
Speaker
um But you know if they don't win the conference championship, they're not guaranteed in. No. No. They're not guaranteed.
00:18:21
Speaker
That's right. I mean, they they lose seconds. The ACC is going to have a tough time getting multiple teams in. They they may get up two, but it's going to be tough for getting more than that. Yeah, if they get two in, it would have to be because, and we'll get to that here in a little bit too, um you know, the teams that going to be able to play their way in, and those teams that are, I hate to put it this put it this way, but play their way out.
00:18:49
Speaker
Right. um You know, and you've got a few of those, and let's see if I can... I keep hoping the rankings will show up here. Well,
00:19:01
Speaker
they're probably having, I think. Oh, here we are. there Okay, we just got them updated. All right. We just got them updated. All right. So the updated ranking as of November 23rd, so as of Sunday, the updated rankings are.
00:19:17
Speaker
And the the top 12 for the playoff are Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, and Georgia. So those will be your four buys. Those are at this point. Now, this is still, you know, we've still got a week of football to play.
00:19:31
Speaker
So those be your four buys. And you've got Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama, BYU, and Utah. So pretty much the same as it was a week ago. Mm-hmm.
00:19:48
Speaker
Oh, no, i no not take that back. hey Come on, give me the right updates. Well, i said it was updated, but now it went back to the 18th, so we're still probably not updated yet then.
00:19:58
Speaker
Oh, okay. But that was the it. so that was the flat So, I mean, what and we'll we'll we'll kind of go with that. um Now, a like said, when we're talking about teams playing their way in and playing their way out, you look at the bottom part of that where you've got Utah at 12, BYU at 11, Alabama at 10, Notre Dame is nine, Oklahoma is eight. And, again, this could all change as soon as we get the new up new rankings in. Yeah.
00:20:25
Speaker
Let me do a refresh real quick and see if that doesn't see if that flips it at all. Nope, still same thing. All right. All those teams are 9-2.
00:20:35
Speaker
Oklahoma is at home against LSU. Notre Dame is at home. This is at stamp this's the other thing. Just about everybody in that top 12 are on the road this week.
00:20:51
Speaker
With the exception of Oklahoma at home against LSU. And BYU is at home against University of Central Florida. Everybody else is on the road. no nine Notre Dame's at Stanford. Alabama's at Auburn.
00:21:09
Speaker
ah Utah is at Kansas.
00:21:15
Speaker
So, I mean... ah you Like we were saying, Oklahoma-LSU, that could be a game that trips some that that trips Oklahoma up. I don't think Stanford can will take down Notre Dame, but, you know, um is that good they would have to win like they did this past weekend. I mean, this past weekend they won, what was it, 70-7 or something like that.
00:21:39
Speaker
It would almost be it almost be have to be that type of a win to make sure that they are That their place would be secure in my mind because you've got so many other teams that are sitting there at that 9-2 mark.
00:21:58
Speaker
You've got Miami at nine and two Vanderbilt's 9-2, Georgia Tech's 9-2, Michigan's 9-2. um Virginia is

Group of Five Playoff Scenarios

00:22:08
Speaker
9-2. Any of those teams, and you know Vanderbilt plays at Tennessee.
00:22:13
Speaker
Like said, Georgia Tech is at Georgia. If Georgia Tech beats Georgia, let's say, Right. It happened last year. They went to multiple overtimes. Right. And you know if Georgia Tech beats Georgia. That would certainly, i would think, elevate them into that top 12 discussion depending on where you know where the where at the ACC and the group of five sit.
00:22:38
Speaker
is Right now, the only representatives outside of... um
00:22:48
Speaker
Outside of Notre Dame, is it's it's Big Ten s big ten or SEC.
00:22:55
Speaker
Yeah. it'll Take it Big 12. Well, Big 12 too. BYU and Utah are Big 12. um So right now, I mean, the do the two... the two Two unknown factors are your ACC champion and whatever group of five. And right now, the highest ranking group of five in the top 25 for the playoff rankings is Tulane at nine and two.
00:23:21
Speaker
And they're actually third in their conference. Exactly right. You know, so yeah anything can happen in that conference. in In the American, they're behind North Texas and Navy in that conference. So, you know anything can happen in that conference as well. And that could shake things up.
00:23:40
Speaker
You know, because because then if, let's say, North Texas does take down, i so who does Tulane play? I dismissed that. who does they Who do they play? um
00:23:52
Speaker
They're at their they at home versus Charlotte. so let's so So let's say they do lose and then they get their championship game. North Texas takes them out. Well, then you've still got over in the Sun Belt, you've got, um who is it over there? James Madison is sitting there at 10-1 going, hey, what about us?
00:24:14
Speaker
So who becomes the highest-ranking, you know, highest-ranking dog in that group of five? That's going to be the interesting part. um Oh, yeah. there are think's I mean, I think there's going to be โ€“ the only way to really solve that in this whole mess is they're going to expand to 16 teams.
00:24:32
Speaker
I just โ€“ I think they'll do โ€“ they'll play 12 this year, they'll play 12 next year, but I think by 27 we see 16 teams.
00:24:44
Speaker
Yeah, I think so. I think from the time they set up 12, each thing you knew it' was going to go to 16. I mean, it just made made sense. It was. So, um and all the money involved in this this college football playoff, you know, they're raking it in. So, you know, there if TV wants 16 teams, they'll put 16 teams in there. I think they will. Right.
00:25:08
Speaker
So ah I'm still I'm still searching, hoping they they update this pretty soon. But um but yeah, I mean, and, you know, as far as regular yeah what how it looks like for bold picture things, you've got a lot of teams that, you know, that are in that playoff ranking that, you know, they're not going to make any Illinois seven or four, Missouri seven and four.
00:25:29
Speaker
um Tennessee's 8-3, Houston's 8-3. You know, the USC, I don't see any of those teams lucking their way into that into that in that top 12. Even though USC right now is ranked 15th, I think that's a little high for USC, but hey, you know, what do I know? um But, you know, so but you we've got teams that are going to playing for...
00:25:56
Speaker
um you know, got things to play for. i mean, you're looking at at Illinois, um you know, they still have a shot if they can win against Northwestern and win a bowl game. They still have a shot at back-to-back nine-win seasons. They still have a shot at a a late December bowl game, like in the, you know, um but, you know, how much is that loss to Wisconsin going to go to affect everything? Yeah.
00:26:24
Speaker
I don't know. who's Who's Missouri? Who you got, Missouri, you got this week? They're playing Arkansas. and You got Arkansas. They're playing Arkansas down Fayetteville. It's a game they should win. yeah If they don't win, they you know there' it's going to be a major game for them as far as.
00:26:39
Speaker
You know, they're both their bowl pitch or what it looks like, it'll help their bowl pitch a whole lot. If they come out it'll help their bowl pitcher whole lot if they can win this weekend. I expect them to.
00:26:52
Speaker
oh yeah Arkansas hasn't won an SEC game yet. And or pay pins is just their defense is just off. of Their offense is pretty good. it keeps them in games. But their defense just can't stop anybody.
00:27:03
Speaker
And so we'll we'll see. I mean, i don't want to be too cocky, but I think that that that's what will happen this weekend with Missouri. So, you know, this time next week, done we'll know a lot more. we'll We'll certainly know a lot after Saturday night. you know Yeah, no doubt about that.
00:27:21
Speaker
No doubt about that. And, you know, and quite frankly, I don't but i don't see much... in this, yeah i guess so with those those bottom four, and we again, we I still don't have an update. Every time I flip on it it says updated November 25th, but then when I hit the the playoff rankings or the full rankings, it says updated November 18th, so I'm not sure what I'm looking at.
00:27:43
Speaker
ah No, this is the one I'm looking at last week is Missouri's in in it. i don't think they'd be in it. They're in the 23rd. That's where they were last week. Well, yeah, Illinois was 21 in its last poll. and I mean, it's got them listed at 7-4, which is what their record is, but I can't i can't imagine them staying in the top 25 after getting beat by by Wisconsin last week. I just โ€“ not my โ€“ i I can't wrap my mind my mind around that one, um if that were to if that were to be the case. but ah
00:28:17
Speaker
So, anyway, um
00:28:23
Speaker
um guess said um you know basketball started. We went again a little bit of basketball here. um But for a moment, let's... Let's take a quick minute here and we will ah break for some um business and then we'll come back. We'll see you on the other side on the NCAA report with Don and Russ. I'm going to ask you a question.
00:28:53
Speaker
Do you get brain fog, dry mouth, fatigue, weakness, or sometimes is your is your urine dark yellow? Now, these could all be signs of dehydration.
00:29:03
Speaker
Our bodies are made up of 50 to 70% water and dehydration can affect us in a lot of different ways. Now, if your body is severely dehydrated, you start feeling dizzy, nauseous, disoriented, and that can put you in the hospital.
00:29:17
Speaker
Now, one way to prevent this is to stay hydrated. Now, water alone may not be enough, especially when you get to that moderate to severe dehydration. You need liquid IV. Liquid IV is a new way to help hydrate and replace key electrolytes like sodium and glucose as well as key vitamins.
00:29:35
Speaker
It uses a process called cellular transport technology, which helps deliver hydration 30% faster and with three times the electrolytes of traditional sports drinks. It enables you to also stay hydrated longer.
00:29:48
Speaker
Plus, you get the benefits of several B vitamins and vitamin C. It's soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, contains no GMOs, and it has several formulas that help you in many different ways. There's a basic electrolyte replacement formula, and they also have that in a sugar-free, which uses an an amino acid blend rather than artificial sweeteners.

00:30:09
Speaker
They have an energy formula that delivers a good pick-me-up without a caffeine crash. An immune-boosting formula that is packed full of vitamin C. There's a kombucha blend for good gut health, even formula for better sleep through hydration.

All right, we are back. This is Don and Russ with the NCAA report by Don and Russ. Makes sense, I guess. All right, well, we did find out why we're having a little trouble getting the rankings, and that's because ESPN is waiting on a basketball game. so But they did they they do have the back half of the rankings from 15 down.
00:32:32
Speaker
So I'll give you those real quick. And that's ah Michigan at nine and two Texas 8-3. That's and is Virginia. Tennessee is Arizona's at SMU makes the rankings at at eight and three Georgia Tech drops down and nine to at me, is not Uh, Tulane is nine and two. They're number 24 and Arizona is eight and three at number 25. So we're going to talk a little bit basketball, but we will kind of wait on the, um, these rankings to come in and then we'll kind of, then we'll go back to the rankings and and games and stuff. So, um, basketball season is underway and, uh, a number of teams have played some pretty good games.

Early College Basketball Season Overview

00:33:26
Speaker
Uh, most of them have been still in their, their,
00:33:31
Speaker
Get to know the team schedule where you're playing, you know, you're playing Little Sisters of the Poor. um Illinois played Long Island University and then played Rio Grande, Texas, or Texas Rio Grande Valley or something like that back to back. It's like, okay. yeah So, you know. Yeah.
00:33:48
Speaker
But, um you know, this basketball season, see it could shape up to be pretty decent. if we got to I've seen Alabama play now a couple times. They look really good. They look scary, to be honest. with They really look scary. I can't remember that kid's name. um They got a guy there doing almost a double-double every night um for them. And it's...
00:34:13
Speaker
So the Texas tech, led we, they, Illinois played them. um And that was a good, that was a really good game. ah So the SEC has got a couple of teams in there that could, could, could make some noise.
00:34:28
Speaker
Well, yeah, and I think Purdue, you're forgetting Purdue too, Don. they're having a They've started off really strong. I think they beat Alabama. They may have. i havet i yeah ah They're playing really well. So, I mean, ah it's really, you can't really look at the record right now because some of the teams have played a tougher schedule than others. Some of them have taken on, and so it's really hard to make a judgment. But, yeah, I agree with you. I think Bama, I think, yeah,
00:34:55
Speaker
You know, probably, ah you know, Kansas is looking strong. ah You know, we're we'll have to see ah ah this year how โ€“ hola Texas looks, I think, is going to be a ah good team. um You know, it's just so early right now to to come up with who who the best teams are. Arkansas is looking, you know, they've had some tough games so far, but they've played a tough schedule. So, right the Calipari over there has really turned that, has really made some noise at that program. Yeah.
00:35:30
Speaker
I think this it's so early right now. Some of these games are fun to watch because they are playing some some interesting games so far. And like I said today, you know you talk about USC and Seton Hall, but we also saw Kansas play Syracuse, St. John's play Baylor,
00:35:46
Speaker
And and some some games like that. And Tennessee and Houston right now are tied in the second half with about a minute and a half left to go. So, yeah, seemed like seeing some good games. You know, if you can break away from football for while, there are some good college games going on, you know.
00:36:02
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I mean, and, you know, and like I said, this is the time, you're like you said, yeah when you're going to get to see a lot of โ€“ you know The guys you're not going to see down the yeah once you once you get into the big the the big conference play games. you know You're going to see some of those guys that are probably 8, 9, 10 on the bench get a lot more playing time in these types of games and these early season games than they would later on down the road. But I think a trend that I've been seeing
00:36:33
Speaker
and you just mentioned you you're going to find a few good games here and there, is when you look at um the the amount of games that teams are playing um where it's not your your cupcake. Like said, Illinois has played Texas Tech. They played the um Alabama. um And I know Bama's played a couple other couple other ah ah games. and In fact, Illinois has got a game coming up ah Friday against UConn.
00:37:06
Speaker
um And I'm looking here, Clemson's already played Georgia once. um So you're you're seeing you're seeing, I think you're seeing a little bit of a change where you're seeing a lot more teams scheduling games that higher caliber early in the season error or in, in the preseason to kind of help them get ready for that, uh, um, their conference play. Cause I know we've got Connecticut UConn coming up. Then we got Tennessee, we got Missouri coming up.
00:37:37
Speaker
Uh, you know, so we're, we're, we're playing we're not playing the, the normal, uh, uh, lower end schedule. Yeah, you know and you don't get penalized for that, for playing a tough early schedule by the NCAA tournament. They will recognize that.
00:37:53
Speaker
So, you know, here if you're getting beat by a By major programs, I guess. You're getting beat by teams in the Power Five. That won't hurt you as much. as you know And you're not going to get that much credit for beating a ah North Dakota State or a ah South Dakota State or whatever. Long Island University. win Yeah, you won't you won't get that much credit for doing that. the The reason to play those teams is to give your team a chance to try out some things and see what's going on. Now, Dennis Gates from Mizzou, I'm going to use him as an example. Early on, he plays a lot of those games, but he uses that as a chance to get his team kind of together. Then he ups the schedule later on. you know We're going to be playing, you guys, Illinois.
00:38:41
Speaker
We'll play Kansas, and we'll play Notre Dame. Notre Dame's on the road, ah and I think Kansas is on the road. so So, I mean, you know, so he'll he you know he's he's playing these type of teams now. He's playing South Carolina State tonight. yeah That's just to give his team a chance to see what he's got and what can come together. you know So, yeah that's what a lot of coaches do. yeah And you mentioned Alabama's schedule, and I just kind of looked it up here. um They, so far this season, have played...
00:39:11
Speaker
North Dakota was their first game, but then it was at St. John's at home against Purdue, which they lost, ah at Illinois, and then they just got beat by number 12, Gonzaga, Monday ah But then they've got coming up UNLV, Clemson, Texas, Arizona. It's like, yeah, it's it's it's not your cookie-cutter schedule that you that you're going to get into with these teams. No, no.
00:39:40
Speaker
No, and the NCAA committee won't penalize them for losing some of those games. They won't penalize them come come tournament time. It'll be the selling of how they do in their conference, and that's really where we're you know the will look closely at

NCAA Tournament Preparation Strategies?

00:39:54
Speaker
them. So same way with any any of the Power Four conferences you know that have ah have good basketball programs.
00:40:01
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I mean, it the yeah and and you're also starting to see a lot more. um And they they asked brennan ah Brad Underwood about this. ah or Well, they were talk actually, it was Bruce Weber. They were talking about during the ballgame um playing a tough early schedule like this as opposed. you know And you know what what he was saying is that you know coaches back in the past, when you played in a tournament like Maui,
00:40:33
Speaker
or the great alaskan shootout or some of these others it only counted as one game because you were never sure how many games you got in lot of those teams because there's only sometimes it was a two-game turn somebody it was around robin sometimes a winner go home And now it counts. He said, you know, he said, you go to Maui, it's a round-robin tournament. used to count as one game. Now it counts as three on your schedule.
00:40:56
Speaker
He said, so you've already, you reduce how many non-conference games you can play when you do tournaments. and he said, that's why I think a lot of these coaches like like ah ah Gates and Underwood and some of these other guys, you know, they're scheduling the the the Yukons, the Alabamas, the, you know, the the the teams, the the bigger teams, um because they can actually, it works out better for them. They get more games in or the same amount of games in, but they get games that count.
00:41:32
Speaker
And they get games that actually show the measure of their team. So i think I think it's, I kind of like it myself. I kind of like seeing that. i you know it's it's fun to It's fun to see go,
00:41:44
Speaker
put up 100 points on you know on on ah ah a team like ah Colgate. Sure. Let's face it, you know it's Colgate. At the end of the day, it's like, yeah they really were a serious challenge to you? Come on. um you know but But to put up, say, you know to win they like they did like Illinois did against Texas Tech, 81-77, Texas Tech came in number You know, that's a that's a good win. that's ah That's a win that as long as Texas Tech can hold, serve for the for what they're what what they've got, you know, that's a win that you can count on on your resume. in that And like you said, in the NCAA tournament, that's something that's going to be work for you and not against you.
00:42:28
Speaker
a you know Right, right. Don, I just saw that they've released the top 12 here. Okay, let's see if you've got it. It's ah on the ESPN website. It's breaking news. So they said top five CFP unchanged.
00:42:47
Speaker
Ducks, Leapfrog, Ole Miss. So,
00:42:53
Speaker
yeah. so You said it's on the ESPN. I'm on their front page, I guess. Okay. on their website here. But what it looks like is, you know, Ohio State still one, Indiana's two, Texas A&M's three, and Georgia's four.
00:43:13
Speaker
Texas Tech is five.
00:43:16
Speaker
Let me look. Six is Oregon. Seven is Ole Miss. If I'm looking at this right, eight, did I say eight is Miami? No, 8 is Notre Dame. No, 8 is Miami, 9 is Notre Dame.
00:43:28
Speaker
Okay, I got i got an a I'm hearing it, yeah. 10 is 11 is and 12 is Tulane. Tulane's moved up into that. Tulane moved up into that into that. Well, yeah, they would have to be moved up to take that 12 spot.
00:43:48
Speaker
Okay.
00:43:50
Speaker
Okay. Let's see how that compares. see so yeah so so um Actually, at the top top four are unchanged. at no um just see Top five are unchanged, right?
00:44:04
Speaker
That's what it said. Top five are unchanged. Actually, the top six, they had Ole Miss at six. ah Oregon still... Yeah, Ducks lead five Ole Miss. Ole Miss is seven. Ducks is sixth.
00:44:21
Speaker
Oregon's moved up to six. Okay, well, the one I'm looking at is still showing the Ducks at the seven and Ole Miss at six. Well, then, this is the week 14, 12 team, and it's just breaking news. So, it's the it's one of the ones.
00:44:37
Speaker
Oh, i okay, I've still got the week 13. I clicked on the wrong one, I think.
00:44:48
Speaker
yeah, that was six days ago. Yeah, what am I looking at here?
00:44:54
Speaker
Sometimes i hateedous I hate those sites. Yeah. Well, I'm at the front page of the ESPN website is what I'm looking at. Okay, let me.
00:45:05
Speaker
There it is. Now I'm in the right one. Okay. Okay.
00:45:11
Speaker
There we go. Now we got the right... Okay, there you are. Yep, you're right. Okay. So, yeah. So, Oklahoma, Notre Dame. Now, Miami flips in at 12 ahead of oh Utah. um You know, there's still some room in there. Like I can said, you know, we'll we'll have to see how the how the games play out. And I don't know. i mean... do I think that the one game that could, that could really just, I won't say upset an apple cart, but it could, could change things is, you know, if Oklahoma gets beat by LSU, that dropped them out of the rankings.
00:45:54
Speaker
Would it be three losses? It wouldn't surprise me. Depends who, you know, they're just saying three losses really puts you in a hole. Some people are saying Texas, there's a three loss team that could make it. they would They would say be Texas, but Texas has got to play A&M this weekend. Right. And so, ah you know,
00:46:15
Speaker
I suppose they beat A&M, that might open up. And if Oklahoma lost, that might be where they swore. That could open up. I mean, then you also got Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt's playing Tennessee.
00:46:29
Speaker
Granted, Tennessee is fairly far down in those rankings. But, you know, that's a signature win for them. That's another top 25 And let's say Oklahoma wins.
00:46:42
Speaker
wins, Texas loses. Now does Vanderbilt slide? It could. I think from what I'm hearing, from people who follow this sp bracket and really follow it, Vanderbilt's outside looking in, even if they beat Tennessee. Some other example yeah yeah other the teams would have to lose for Vanderbilt to s slide up there. and It could happen. Miami's got to play Pittsburgh.
00:47:09
Speaker
Uh-huh. You know, so Miami could lose, but then that would just, that to me, that would just elevate Pittsburgh up into that top 12. Well, if Alabama lost to Auburn this weekend, I wouldn't expect them to, but you that's such a rivalry game. Oh, yeah. If they would kick Alabama out, that might move someone like if Vanderbilt in. You know, you just...
00:47:31
Speaker
So there's a lot to be decided this weekend still. A lot to be decided. And this is going to be the fun part for the next couple weeks is, you know, after next weekend, we'll have ah we'll have a a picture of what's going on.
00:47:46
Speaker
And I don't think this is the final week. I mean, think you've still got Army, Navy in two weeks and stuff like that. I think, but this is, i believe this is the last full week of college football.
00:48:05
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Army Navy plays next week, I think, after, after the week after. Yeah. First Saturday in December. Yeah, that first Saturday in December is when they play, yeah.
00:48:19
Speaker
Yeah, so, yeah, yeah yeah actually be actually they're playing later this year, December 13th. Oh, that is much later. It is a lot later. So they'll actually be playing December 13th for the Army-Navy games. and that But after this week, I just clicked on week 15. There's no game scheduled. So this is essentially the last week for college football. So, um you know, again, we'll have to wait and see how it goes. And, you know, we'll ah we'll hook up in a couple of weeks. We'll have a real clear picture of who's playing who, where the games are going to be, who gets what.

Bowl Game Selections and Conference Tie-Ins

00:48:53
Speaker
And we can start playing. fooling around with, uh, with bowl games. Uh, hopefully we, hopefully we both, we both get a bowl game after Christmas. I, those are the fun ones.
00:49:05
Speaker
Um, yeah, exactly. Yeah. I'm kind of doing a piece now for my, uh, my, uh, champagne, champagne room, uh, working on a piece of what, you know if Illinois wins, what bowl games they could be looking at.
00:49:19
Speaker
And if they lose, what bowl games they could be looking at. And, uh, It's kind of fun to go over some of that and look at look at all those. because I didn't realize just about every bowl game has some type of a conference tie-in with somebody.
00:49:34
Speaker
yeah um yeah I didn't realize that before. I mean um i think it's the the pinstripe bowl is a Big Ten and ACC contract.
00:49:47
Speaker
Hmm. Uh, that's in New York. That's a Yankee stadium. That's a Yankee stadium. Uh, like music city bowl is a big 10 sec contract. Right. Right. So it's kind of a fun, kind of a little interesting thing. i just, I was just kind of noticing as i was going on. So this is kind of yeah really interesting. So yeah, anyway, uh, well, uh, all right. Well, I think we've kind of covered as much as we can get covered and and still, and, and still, uh, have a, a day.
