Escape Room Adventures

Sure, I can go. um i did something that's a mildly themed experience this past week. um I went to an escape room with my coworkers as part of a like sort of year-end goal achievement thing.

um I cannot remember the exact name of it, um but it was one of those escape rooms that has multiple rooms. I love that. That like makes it so much more interesting to me. um And it was kind of set up as a secret mission. So you start out in this spice market,

which actually was kind of creepy. It was dark in there and like very atmospheric lighting, lots of rugs and spices and stuff on the walls. And then you find the entrance to the secret lair, go down this fake elevator, and then you open up into a room that has like a missile launch in it. So very like thematically opposite rooms, all part of the same experience. And there were some fun things you had to do as part of it. Like I've been to some pretty basic ones, but this one had like You had to stick a cane through the wall and like manipulate something to get to knock it over to get the key. And um there were puzzles to solve to get the right arrangements of door handles so things would open. um it was it was really well done. um

And shout out to my team. We got out with like 20 minutes left. So I guess my engineer co-workers are smart. but I'm the worst at those. I think like I've only gotten through like one of them. And i've done like four times.

The first time my family did one, we accidentally did one of the hardest ones. Like, I guess we didn't realize or my mom didn't look it up. And we were separated into two rooms and had communicate between the two.

we didn't even get out of the initial rooms to, like, get together. The guy was like, yeah, you guys did not do well. Awesome. ah I've only done one. um Did they have to give you any hints or anything? Because I remember the the worker had to like pop her head in or come over the speaker or whatever and just like yeah push us in the right direction a little bit. They usually offer to do that. They offered it for us and we were like, don't like just unprompted do it.

But there was a part of the beginning where we were kind of stuck. And so he gave us a little prompt, like, look at these lights over here. And that's all we needed. And then for the rest of the game, we just went through the whole thing without any more hints.

And he pointed out that that's kind of unusual, that people usually do get stuck at some point. um But we also were seven people, I think, and the capacity on the room is eight. So like we did have a good number of people investigating all the corners and trying to make things happen. So that helped.

Yeah, I remember in mine also, there was something we were looking at. I think it was like ah an outlet or something where like that has to do something. And then she came over the loudspeaker. She was like, no, don't that's for outlet don't touch that. Yes, there's always something that looks suspicious. And they're like, nope, don't don't try to remove that from the wall. I can't push it with your finger like you can like do not touch it. like Right, right.

You have spell? I can come up with one. I feel like this is going to make me sound really ignorant, but like there, I've been watching a little bit of Olympics in the background. I prefer summer Olympics to winter Olympics just because I really like a lot of the summer sports and running and gymnastics, but Um, I feel like there are there's such a wide variety of skill level required to compete in these sports. And that that's not true. I'm sure all of these sports require a lot of skill and a lot of training and these athletes work very hard. but I feel like you stick me on a illusion, and I can figure it out.

But. so good like like this so the setup was insane and i love how they they had the the people dressed up the dancers dressed up as the trees yeah that was really cool that's one thing i did see about it on social media yeah so somebody didn't think through the view from the stadium because it's just a bunch of grass and he disappears it and they can't see him for five minutes yeah It was all about the camera work, but it was really good. um And basically the the setup of the game is that It's how many people? It's like over 20 when it starts, yeah right? starts with like 20. I think it's like 20 people. Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot of people at the beginning. So um the the context of the game is that nobody knows at the beginning who they are. And then everybody closes their eyes at the beginning.

And the host, Alan, picks out typically three. I think it's always been three traitors. And then... They're the traitor, but nobody else knows that they are. And their goal is um to be undetected and to lie to people and everything. So that way, nobody knows they're a traitor.

um Every night, the traitors get together and they can choose somebody from the castle to murder, which obviously they don't really die, but they get thrown off the show, basically.

um And then the opposite side of that is the faithful who is everybody else who is not a traitor, um, are all trying to talk to each other and like figure out who the traitors are.

And at the every day, the same that there's a murder every day before the murder, there's something called a banishment and they gather together at a round table. It's kind of like a tribal council at survivor. If you're familiar with that concept and they all discuss like, and they bring their evidence about who the traitors could be.

And it's always this like, The most less part of the show. It's like the fringest evidence ever. It'll be like somebody s slipped up and actually use the word accidentally use the word murder or like, oh, I heard somebody laugh and like they were the traitor. Like it's it's always bare, like threadbare evidence. But a lot of times people come in and so convinced that it's somebody. So anyway, they come into the room. They try to convince like everybody in the room who the traitors are.

And then they have a vote around the round table and they disclose who they voted for and the person who gets the most votes. gets banished from the castle and that person then reveals whether or not they were a traitor or a faithful and the show almost always starts out with them banishing a bunch of faithfuls and not realizing who the traitors are and they're very upset about it um end goal of the game is at the very end they have like a set number of rounds that this is played um and at the end there's a group of like usually four to five people left

Um, and if there are still traders in the midst, um, at the end of the game and they choose to stop the game, the traders win all of the money that they've been winning over the course of this game.

But if the people left are only faithful, they get to split the money that's remaining. Um, so at the very end of the game, there's and sort of this additional rounds of banishment that happens. Like, is anybody left still a trader or not?

And they're usually very physical and designed to like put housewives in uncomfortable situations. So you can laugh at them like trying to cross a stream in their like fancy costumes that they're wearing.

yeah um and and but also i was gonna say the challenges also offer like other random things like sometimes there are shields that people can win they're protected from banishment or protected from murder murder rather oh i will say the this the first season that i watched the the challenges were like the why are we doing this? It's just sort of sort of like a fake way to earn money. But then they introduce the shields and this season they've added even more like now there's a dagger and there's like different ways to get the shields than there used to be. It's a lot more involved. So the challenges actually matter to the gameplay, which is interesting.

Because the entertainment value is just like watching these people, a lot of them who are used to a lot of comfort, like dealing with these terrible situations.
