Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast, where today we will be analysing tactical aspects from our game against West Ham at the weekend, including a continuation of our insanely fast starts and our lack of regular goal threat. Just before we get going, guys, we're a brand new company, so we are looking for your support over the coming season and beyond, as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network.

whether this is a five-star rating on your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends, we are very grateful for any support that we are able to receive. So then West Ham again at the weekend, obviously we had a general summary in the podcast yesterday. This was a tactics user that I struggled to prepare for to some extent because I just thought the game was a rather drab affair, I thought that
00:01:06
officialgspn
it wasn't It wasn't the most exciting. I mean, we we we could have played better, but we it also could have gone worse. I think we played okay. I think we probably hit about par in our performance, perhaps. I think, you know, that there are some politics, but also things for Thomas Frank and the team to work on this week. And, you know, ultimately it's not a bad point, but, you know, we we maybe could do better, you know, by now. I think we should be challenging ourselves to do better.
00:01:36
officialgspn
Having said that, I think, you know, this was another game where we went man to man again, you know, in terms of our setup at goal kicks. And, you know, I thought, I thought we were more intense in the press again. I thought we had to keep possession more again, which resulted in 57% in our failure. I think once again, that's more evident. So we know we're noticing this season, you know,
00:02:01
officialgspn
and an extra emphasis on control and trying to be brave from a breadth of perspective, although on this occasion it didn't really result in creating chances at the other end. Of course, another another thing I need to address and talk about, I mean we spoke about it last week, Match for Day did quite a good segment on it as well, is Another quick start, and another kickoff routine, Brian's goal after 38 seconds this time, which, you know, indicates we're actually slowing down, unfortunately. f But I mean, just just being there, and obviously see I was at Spurs as well, there's just something about an early goal being scored in the stadium. Like I'm watching the game, but I'm not fully settled in and I'm not ready for it by the time it is in. And, you know, I felt the same in the away and at Spurs, you know, perhaps it was,
00:02:52
officialgspn
even more difficult then given what we was at the complete other end to where the goal was scored, but you know you just feel like you're not ready for it and you just feel like you've not properly watched the build up to the goal. you know I guess it's a shame when that's the only goal that we score in either game. and you know we don't We don't get a goal to celebrate later on and we we know we don't really put our foot down, double down following those you know bright starts. However,
00:03:18
officialgspn
You know, we have created some history. I know Thomas Frank in his press conference was convinced that Brentford had broken a world record. I don't think that enough statistics are available to ultimately work out what Brentford indeed have. But we can say with some, well, with complete confidence that Brentford have now become the first team in the Premier League to score in the opening minute of three consecutive games. We were only the second team.
00:03:45
officialgspn
to do it in two consive so consecutive games after Manchester City, of course, which we spoke about last week. And we are also now the second team in Premier League history to score a goal in the opening minute of three games in a single season. That is after Everton in 1998-99. And obviously see with only six games down, we are currently on a 50% rate of scoring in the first minute in our games. There is plenty of time.
00:04:12
officialgspn
to break that record and and beat that record later in the season, which is obviously obviously something for the record books. And it's always nice to see Brantford involved in any kind of positive Premier League record. It just shows again how far we've come as a team. I think perhaps a gloss has been taken off of it with no win during that time. Obviously a away at City and away at Tottenham, it's understandable to some extent. you know ah I can forgive us especially for the city game I guess with how how well we played in that opening period and we obviously just couldn't capitalize on any of the other chances we had. What it doesn't do any good towards is our points drop from winning position of stats which obviously we were concerned with last week um when we spoke about the the same thing and you know we don't
00:05:06
officialgspn
even even from when our kickoffs take place after the opposition score, we don't seem to come close to replic replicating ourselves here. So obviously there's still things to work on. Again, like I said yesterday, I don't want to go into this too deeply today because I just don't think it's sustainable what we're doing. It's definitely not sustainable. I don't think it will continue. I think it is just one of those strange quirks that can't necessarily be explained, but obviously,
00:05:33
officialgspn
in this episode a couple of times now. We have, um sorry, in this podcast a couple of times now in previous episodes, we have covered you know the ways that Brentford are pushing maybe some margins into their favor and increasing the chances that these things happen, which is obviously always a positive thing.
00:05:53
officialgspn
after the break we will be getting stuck in to some other stats that caught my eye over this weekend and perhaps difficulties that we may face and perhaps did face already at the weekend in front of goal.
00:06:12
officialgspn
you have
00:07:20
officialgspn
So then welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford podcast. So another stat that caught my intention from the weekend and the main reason for this podcast today is that no one other than Brian and Boomer or Jorn Whistler has scored any of our eight goals this season. Now this becomes more of a concern given obviously we won't be seeing Whistler for a couple of months and the end product as we discussed in yesterday's episode maybe isn't quite there on a consistent basis in the likes of Shada and KLP yet.
00:07:51
officialgspn
Obviously we're we're yet to see what Carvalho can do and whether he can add more goals to his game, but I still don't think, or I still think it'll be very difficult to, you know, step into Whistler's shoes perhaps and, you know, be the finisher he is because I think he's the best, best at the club. So what I do think.
00:08:10
officialgspn
We are probably looking for the load to be shared amongst those. Obviously, we perhaps Brian will take the main burden, but I do think it's really, really important if Brian's not on it one week or if the terrible scenario happens that he gets injured again. you know We need to be confident that there are goals somewhere in this team. but At this moment in time, I'm not particularly sure that there is um Obviously, we saw Dam's guard also get his first goal in the cup against Leighton Orient, but again, you know he's been at Bremen for a long time now, perhaps not got the the goals that he know really should have you know in his more you know attacking kind of midfielder position. Of course, I know that he played deeper against West Ham, so you know that that's it that can be his defense for the weekend, but I think from the overall squad,
00:09:03
officialgspn
you know, we need to be looking at getting more goals, even, you know, from from our defenders, you know, set-piece goals, you know, I want to see more goals, some corners, free kicks, you know, the likes of Pinnock and Collins, I think, are always good for one or two. I think Ira and Vanden Bloch should be no different in the presence we have between them four. I feel that we could be doing a bit more in terms of, you know, goal scoring and sharing the load. And KLP's defense as well, as you know, I've mentioned him,
00:09:33
officialgspn
Like I also mentioned in the episode yesterday, he's played more minutes at left wing back so far, perhaps this season, but obviously I hope now with you know some of the tougher away games out of the way this season that we'll be seeing him more in a front three and obviously we we can see him flourish in that in that um area. In terms of this weekend's game in particular, I've had a look at the shot map. We only had eight shots to West Ham's 19 and four of those shots were outside of the area.
00:10:01
officialgspn
which I think is quite unlike us to have an even split in terms of in and out the areas. We usually place emphasis on getting into the best scoring positions. I don't particularly think that we tend to be a team to go for pot shots outside the area, you know, which is ultimately, I think why, you know, it's it's quite rare for us to score those types of goals, you know, the types of screamers that you sometimes see, I think,
00:10:27
officialgspn
Burnley away last season, Burnley at home, sorry, last season perhaps stands out for those with obviously the Godos goal and the Bummo goal, but I think they were very much um anomalies and very much you know exceptions to to the usual rule. And how we normally try and go about things, I think we probably score a remarkable number of goals from the six yard box in the penalty area.
00:10:48
officialgspn
um But obviously we just weren't able to do that other weekend and it was perhaps evident of our frustration or our difficulty in being able to break West Ham down and create anything of note. I mean to emphasize that further we accumulate an XG of only 0.37 as per foot mob and 0.13 of that was Brian's first minute goal. There was no other individual chance that we created worth more than 0.05 XG in the entire game. And I know it's not all about actually, ge I know that, you know, so certain people turn their nose up to that sort of thing. And obviously, of course, it also depends on the quality of play you have. And, you know, whether you'll be able to turn some of those, you know, less likely chances into into goals, or whether you're indeed able to check to take your better chances, which sometimes we mean guilty of not doing, but I think
00:11:42
officialgspn
what that stat is evidence of, the fact that we did not create any clear cut chances, we did not really create any even good chances at the weekend. and And that perhaps is a bit unlike us and a bit of a concern. Obviously in the end, I felt we were trying to rely on you know penalty shouts, perhaps crosses into the box, but no one really in the box that you would fancy to win the header.
00:12:08
officialgspn
And, you know, you know beat the West Town defenders in order to score. And I think they were quite comfortable defending that, to be honest. I think.
00:12:18
officialgspn
Like I've touched on, one of the key issues is. Abuma and Whistler being the only ones to score for Brantford and the current issue we have up front without Whistler at the moment and obviously without Igo Tiago as well. I think that makes Abuma clearly the best finisher who's fit and available to us at the moment. So.
00:12:38
officialgspn
Is there a shout to maybe switching over to the middle? I know that he did drift into the middle at points against West Ham. I thought it was quite a fluid front three. And that's what I like about not having like a target man figure in there. I like the fluidity of it, even when Wiss is fit, um that they can interchange a bit more than than perhaps when we had Ivan Tony and perhaps when, perhaps it will also be when, when TR goes there. I like that, but maybe shouldn't Buma base himself in the middle a bit more? I don't know.
00:13:08
officialgspn
all I do know is that if Brentford had a chance he is probably the one now that I'd want it to fall to whereas I think the likes of Shada perhaps if you move him over to the right and KRP on the left I think Shada definitely can express himself more on the right with his you know direct running his dribbling his pace I don't think he's quite there yet with his link up play with his um finishing I don't think that's consistent enough I think yes he does have more of a presence perhaps he you know might might be able to get on the end of some crosses but otherwise I can't really see the benefit of him being down the middle I think he needs to just step up his technical quality and be able to link up and finish more consistently before I can be confident of that obviously another option would be Carvalho as force 9 I feel that
00:14:08
officialgspn
He is clearly best down the middle. I think his position is clearly down the middle, but maybe not as our number nine, maybe more in the number 10 as to where he was at the weekend. I feel that he is better in tight areas where he can do some intricate play and feed off one twos or wingers and creates space to run into. I'm not sure again, though, about his physicality in his final product yet to show me that he can play the number nine role. I am a bit more forgiving when it comes to Carvalho. He's obviously much newer at the club.
00:14:35
officialgspn
you know, I would still give him a few weeks to really show what he can do in the Premier League. Obviously he's given us a glimpse in the Cup against Leighton Orient where he scored once and laid onto assists. But obviously the Premier League is a different beast and I do feel there's potential there and there's flashes and there's touches that, you know, really excite me. But I wonder whether he will be more of a creative force rather than a goal scorer as such. and and And I do think obviously It's difficult coming in to replace the likes of Whissa given you know his goal scoring record of late and how good he is at finishing off chances. um The only attack we haven't really spoken about is Keeluis Potter. I don't really think it's a viral watch at all to really have him in the middle. I don't think he's that profiler player at all again. I think he like he likes to take on players out wide. He perhaps doesn't have the raw pace that Shada has.
00:15:28
officialgspn
um but I feel that his technical quality is more there. I would just like to see him go for that final ball more, being more direct, you know have a shot, you know take on a man and know be decisive in your final action, make the final decision because I think that's what is a difference between a player that looks good and obviously a player that you know is is really and truly a difference maker. And obviously I want to see him now start to progress, you know providing he may remains fit for the rest of the season. and Of course, the long-term solution to this is you know that Whistler is is they're still probably going to be the best finisher at the club. He's good with linking the ball up to feet. He is a brilliant option down the middle. I think his position best position's always been down the middle, and I think he was used on the left for too long, and you know largely because you know Ivan Tony would take that position in the middle. I think Igor Tiago, obviously we haven't seen much of him yet, aside from 45 minutes in a friendly. but
00:16:28
officialgspn
you know, given his profile and um stature, you would you would expect his strengths, you know, are likely to lie in more winning games where, you know, perhaps we're we're having to use more long balls, maybe against, you know, some of the bigger teams. I think maybe he's more of a traditional target man and, you know, he might he might be the one to maybe get onto the end of chances where we're struggling to break teams down and we are relying on more crosses into box.
00:16:55
officialgspn
I think you know get given both of their profiles and their differences, I think you know they may well even compliment each other when when they're both back and available. and But of course, we we're going to have to wait on that given our current injury situation. Anyway, that will do for today. ah Thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford Podcast.
