Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we'll be looking ahead to our trip to Old Trafford at the weekend. I am joined once again by Lydia. How are we doing? Looking forward to the weekend.
00:00:22
Lydia
Yeah, looking forward to the weekend. I'll be visiting friends at uni, a few of which are my new friends. So that should be interesting.
00:00:31
officialgspn
Yeah, I'll be there. And I was there last season when obviously we'll talk about it later, but we were 1-0 up with minutes to go. And of course, it all fell apart, but Scott McTominay's moved on now, so hopefully things are better this time round.
00:00:43
Lydia
Yeah.
00:00:46
officialgspn
Just before we get going, guys, we are a brand new company, so we're looking forward to, you we're looking for your support over the coming season and beyond, as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network, whether this is a five-star review on your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends, we are very grateful for any support that we receive.
00:01:05
officialgspn
So and let's start with team news. There was, I was a little bit concerned to see that Norgard and Dambsgar were both withdrawn from the Denmark squad um in the last couple of weeks.
00:01:15
Lydia
Yeah.
00:01:16
officialgspn
I'm hoping that was just a precaution, but you never know with Brentford.
00:01:21
Lydia
Yeah.
00:01:21
officialgspn
um we have also We have those seen pictures of Tiago who seems to be back on the grass. Ruka Henry seems to be in some kind of contact trading. I think we had some positive updates on wizard as before the international break. And Jensen, I don't think his timescales are too far away from around about now.
00:01:41
officialgspn
I would have thought that this weekend is probably too soon for all of them.
00:01:46
Lydia
Yeah.
00:01:47
officialgspn
um But who are you most looking forward to i guess to having back out of those? And are you hopeful that any of them will be back soon?
00:01:56
Lydia
I think, well, I'm definitely obviously looking forward to having Henry back. I think we obviously missed him. I feel like Norgard was probably the, we're going to see him the soonest.
00:02:06
Lydia
That's just my thoughts.
00:02:07
officialgspn
Well, we saw him we saw him against Wolves.
00:02:09
Lydia
Yeah.
00:02:09
officialgspn
It's it's whether I'm assuming he's still OK, but he was withdrawn from the Denmark squad.
00:02:13
Lydia
Yeah. I feel like he i There's nothing else to suggest to me that we won't see him like on Saturday. So I feel like that'll be fine.
00:02:23
officialgspn
Yeah, it happens sometimes. All clubs do it if you know you've got a slight knock or if you just come back from injury like he had. Sometimes you're withdrawn from the squad with like a minor injury, but then you're okay for the next Premier League game I'm hoping that's the case and I'm hoping that's the case with Dam's guard too because I'll see he's Started this season really well boss.
00:02:34
Lydia
Yeah.
00:02:40
officialgspn
He has had injury issues in the past um Yeah, I think it'll be nice to see when Rico Henry starts playing for the beating because I suspect given he's been out for so long The hill feature for them a couple of times first, so it'll be good to hopefully see that happen in the next week or two So then in terms of
00:02:40
Lydia
Yeah.
00:02:55
Lydia
Yeah.
00:02:58
officialgspn
how we set up, obviously sometimes against the likes of Liverpool and City away, we we'll go with more of a back five, obviously against the likes of Wolves, we went back four.
00:03:10
officialgspn
Where do you see Manchester United at the moment? so that they They are a big six club, but they are struggling quite a bit.
00:03:16
Lydia
Yeah.
00:03:16
officialgspn
So how how would you set up um this weekend?
00:03:20
Lydia
Well, I think obviously we mentioned our injuries. i'm Manu obviously have got their own injuries at the minute, which is a good thing for us. But I think that, I think obviously Harry Maguire's out, wouldn't really see him as a threat anyway, to be honest, but Luke Shaw's still out as well. So I think that because of that, we probably have the ability to press harder than we may have done with all their like key players in the squad.
00:03:50
Lydia
So I think that obviously there, I think was it five games they've, they haven't won in five games pretty much. So I think that they'll obviously be going for goals and I think that we need to play how we usually play, press high and take advantage of their weak spots.
00:04:16
officialgspn
Yeah, I think I would like to see us play about four. I think it would be interesting and exciting to see how we fare going to to toe to toe with them like that. But I do suspect that Thomas Frank might slightly on the side of caution and set up in a similar way that we did at Anfield and the Etihad. But having said that, that is that has still been more positive than it has been in previous seasons. We are still trying to high press.
00:04:43
officialgspn
we have typically started with King Lewis Potter as a left wing back. And when we have the ball, he does kind of shift forward um to join up with the front too. So I think that's how we'll approach things.
00:04:57
officialgspn
But I do want to see us try and go at them because I think they maybe can be got at.
00:05:02
Lydia
Yeah, I think especially now is our chance.
00:05:04
officialgspn
yes Yeah. Yeah, they've only scored five goals all season. So
00:05:10
Lydia
who
00:05:10
officialgspn
you know, we scored five in our last game and we spoke about that on the episode yesterday and obviously that there the pressure is all, ah I guess, on Manchester United and Tanhark at the moment and we hopefully can be in a position to exploit that.
00:05:15
Lydia
o
00:05:27
officialgspn
um Just looking then, if if, assuming we do go with that pack five, which I think we probably will, there's probably a few areas where, you know, it's a little bit up for debate who might start.
00:05:40
officialgspn
First of all, who would you like to see play up front? Obviously we saw Charder play as a central striker against Wolves. He missed a couple of big chances.
00:05:49
Lydia
Yeah.
00:05:50
officialgspn
He did get called up to the Germany squad since then, so hopefully that's boosted his confidence. Would you go with him again or would you start with someone else down the middle?
00:06:00
Lydia
I think I'd go with him again, purely because I'm thinking statistics wise, surely his time is coming. Like there's so many near misses. Again, maybe that's a reason not to start him, but I do think he obviously injects a lot of energy.
00:06:16
Lydia
into the team. So actually changed my mind. I think I'd bring him in later on when we need a little bit of energy. But I think his time is coming and I think once he, once it starts happening, we'll see a lot of girls. That's my hope anyway.
00:06:31
officialgspn
I would probably have him on the bench. I would probably, obviously Brian will be one of the two up front if he play over back five. I'd maybe like to see Carvalho alongside him. I think Carvalho's link up play is quite good.
00:06:44
Lydia
Yeah.
00:06:44
officialgspn
I think he's probably a little bit better at linking up play with the midfield and I think having Shada on the bench to come on with maybe half an hour to go against a tired Johnny Evans at left back apparently.
00:06:58
officialgspn
um I think that will be more effective and I think maybe if we were losing at that stage in the game and we were to maybe then go to a back four, I think he is better on the wing than maybe down the middle.
00:07:13
officialgspn
And I think obviously if we do get big chances at the weekend, we want to be taking them because it is still Old Trafford.
00:07:20
officialgspn
Manchester United is still a good team and I think we need to take our chances when they come. and Another area then is who will play
00:07:20
Lydia
yeah
00:07:26
Lydia
Yeah.
00:07:30
officialgspn
as the third centre back and if it is Seth Vandenberg, who will then cover the wing backs? What are your thoughts on that?
00:07:40
Lydia
I think Sepp has obviously showed us that he obviously came here because he wanted more playing time and he's young and he wants to show he can do in the prems so I think that he should definitely start and then in terms of who should support him at the back I think to be fair Aya has even though he was maybe not the most like stable player I think he's when I saw him at the last home game thought he was really good and so I think he should definitely start
00:08:16
officialgspn
Yeah, but my prediction, I think, will be obviously Collins and Pinnaca nailed on to start a centre back. I think Vandenberg will be the third centre back.
00:08:22
Lydia
Yeah.
00:08:25
officialgspn
I suspect we might see Iyer shift over to right wing back and then Keene Lewis-Potter play like that left wing back roll, but also bombing forwards when we have the ball. That's what I'd expect to see.
00:08:37
officialgspn
um We haven't seen Mazz Ross there in the last few weeks. I think he's fallen slightly out of favour. um I think maybe his ability on the ball is letting him down slightly, especially as we're trying to play out more now.
00:08:51
officialgspn
So maybe maybe I would favour that. I still don't really think it's ideal to play Keaton Lewis-Potter in a left wing back roll. I think someone like Rico Henry would be perfect for that in a way. But obviously we can only play with what we've got at the moment.
00:09:04
Lydia
Yeah.
00:09:05
officialgspn
Yeah, obviously we haven't we haven't seen the likes of Ben Mee at centre back. This is neither really apart from in the cup. But again, I'm not sure he's necessarily got the legs these days.
00:09:15
officialgspn
I think he's probably quite happy to be more of an influential player in the dressing room. Obviously he's decent cover if we ever need a bit of cover, but in terms of playing 90 minutes, I'm not sure um that we want to put him in that position anyway at the moment.
00:09:25
Lydia
Yeah.
00:09:35
officialgspn
Having talking about centre backs who are getting older. and Manchester United, apparently, according to the Boys From Daily Manchester United on yesterday's podcast, they will be playing Johnny Evans at left back.
00:09:51
officialgspn
And my first thought was we've got to be exploiting that with the likes of Brian and Bumo's pace on that right hand side.
00:09:55
Lydia
Yeah.
00:09:59
officialgspn
Couldn't surely be licking his lips about trying to get in behind Johnny Evans. Obviously, Johnny Evans is going to be decent defensively. But I think typically when you think of a left back they need to you know have some kind of pace about them as well.
00:10:16
Lydia
Yeah.
00:10:17
officialgspn
So I think that's definitely an area we could be exploiting and also the likes of Ericsson and Casamiro, who they're expecting to start, as like they're holding midfielders.
00:10:29
officialgspn
Again, neither of them are young.
00:10:32
officialgspn
Casamiro's been exposed to making many mistakes this season. I don't necessarily see Ericsson as a holding midfielder. He can obviously pick a pass. Obviously, we we know him quite well.
00:10:32
Lydia
and
00:10:43
Lydia
Yeah.
00:10:43
officialgspn
and I think if anything, he's similar more similar to maybe like a Jenson, but probably doesn't have the legs anymore that Jenson has.
00:10:46
Lydia
Mm-hmm.
00:10:52
officialgspn
and So again, in terms of them trying to press and in terms of them us being able to play through the middle, I think that's something that we should be looking to exploit at the weekend. Have you got any anything to add to that?
00:11:07
Lydia
Um, I definitely, my Twitter has been blowing up with Erickson, like facing Erickson. I think that like you said, he's obviously getting older.
00:11:19
Lydia
We can see like he has moments of like magic in terms of his passing and his touches when he played for us, but I don't think he's at that level anymore. And I think that it'll be easier for us to sort of exploit his, maybe his age a little bit and his weaknesses.
00:11:35
Lydia
So that'll be interesting.
00:11:36
officialgspn
Yeah I think he has been one of their best players this season but I think that probably says more about everyone else that matches United rather than him because I definitely think he probably does struggle to get through 90 minutes now and that he probably doesn't have the legs especially alongside Casamiro who's also struggling a little bit to cover that midfield and just cover the distance that they need to cover I think
00:11:43
Lydia
Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:02
officialgspn
To some extent, it's also difficult to predict which team Tenharg is going to play, given his strange rotation picks that he says in his press conferences.
00:12:09
Lydia
Yeah.
00:12:11
officialgspn
Obviously last game, he started Maguire and Evans and dropped Delict and Martinez, which seemed quite an odd decision to everybody else. um But we will see on that tomorrow.
00:12:23
officialgspn
and So then after the break, we'll be going through our predictions and how we think the game will pan out.
00:13:41
officialgspn
Hello and welcome to part two. So then in terms of how we can expect the game to go this weekend, if we're looking back at last season, obviously like a reference at the start, we will 1-0 approach in the 90th minute Old Trafford last season.
00:13:57
officialgspn
And then two Scott McTominay goals later on, quite scrappy goals from what I remember. I think Stracosia was in goal that day as well, because Flecken missed out for illness. um Obviously led us to defeat, and obviously we are still yet to win at Old Trafford, despite coming so close on that occasion.
00:14:18
officialgspn
And also in the home game last season, I remember us absolutely dominating and then still Manchester United taking a late lead. And obviously we did then come back with an even later equalizer.
00:14:26
Lydia
Yeah.
00:14:29
officialgspn
What do you make a that of this game then based on our experiences last season? Can we still have confidence based on how we performed maybe against him last season?
00:14:41
Lydia
I think obviously in the press, it's all been about behind the scenes at Man New. So if any time is our time to finally get the win at Old Trafford, it is now.
00:14:52
Lydia
ah Having said that, like don't think we should take anything for granted. We still need to remember we're at Old Trafford. It's still, as we've seen in the past, it's still a difficult place to win.
00:15:06
Lydia
But I do think we should have confidence
00:15:10
officialgspn
Yeah, I agree. I think last season we probably didn't get the points against them that we deserved. And if we play in a similar way, nine times out of 10, we probably would get more points. Obviously, we've got to cut out silly mistakes. Obviously, we've got to remain focused for the full 90 minutes.
00:15:29
officialgspn
you know, because if we're looking at it, Manchester United scored three goals against Brentford last season, and all after the 90 minutes. So they did not score within the 90 minutes. So we've we've obviously got to keep focused, we've got to try and minimize mistakes. One thing I have perhaps been thinking of, if we do score early again, I worry about what the atmosphere might be like based on Manchester United's perspective.
00:15:56
officialgspn
I think the pressure is all on them.
00:15:57
Lydia
Yeah.
00:16:01
officialgspn
I think they're losing patience with Tenharg and I think it could be a pretty hostile environment if we were to score early or to dominate the opening stages.
00:16:12
officialgspn
So I think again that is something that Manchester United have to be wary of and something that we can just go in with no pressure and try to take advantage. and Because if we have to play a big six team at the moment, I think this is probably the one we want to play.
00:16:28
Lydia
Yeah.
00:16:28
officialgspn
And I quite like these games personally, because I can go there without feeling much pressure, but I'm actually going there with some hope this time, which is a sign perhaps of how far we've come and also how much we have to go at the moment.
00:16:40
Lydia
Not far there before.
00:16:43
officialgspn
Yeah. So in terms of style, I think we've briefly brushed over it based on how we can hurt certain players who might be starting from Manchester United, but do you think we can be brave and do you think that maybe if you compare it to like the Tottenham game where Tottenham's press was really good and they forced us into mistakes um after we scored early on, do you think we can play out from the back here with a bit more joy and do you think that we can ultimately have more joy in the game?
00:17:15
Lydia
I definitely think so. I think, as we mentioned before, like lack of pace, um, 10 hard, like, constantly changing his team, maybe the there's more opportunity for us to feel like more in control of the game. And we've got that energy and the pace. And if we have people like players like Shada on the bench, I think there's no reason why we shouldn't be playing out from the back.
00:17:42
officialgspn
Yeah, I think um we went to Spurs without Norgard and I think he's quite a big calming influence.
00:17:47
Lydia
Yeah.
00:17:51
officialgspn
He won't try, I don't think any crazy passes, but he he will help us keep the ball in those deep areas where we can't afford to lose it. So hopefully he can bring some calmness to the team and hopefully he can help us progress the ball up the pitch because it's really important.
00:18:05
officialgspn
The way we are playing, if we do make mistakes initially playing out from the back, it there's a real chance it could result in a goal or at least a really big chance for Manchester United.
00:18:15
officialgspn
So we've we've got to minimise that. It won't be any good as playing well for the opening 20 minutes and then just giving it straight to them because they still have good players um who could still score goals.
00:18:21
Lydia
Yeah.
00:18:28
officialgspn
And then obviously that moves me on to the defence. Do you think as good as we were against Wolves, we still conceded three goals? I think we've scored 13 and conceded 13 this season.
00:18:39
officialgspn
and so I guess we're quite active at both ends of the pitch this season, so do you think maybe we do need to tighten up defensively a touch?
00:18:44
Lydia
Yeah.
00:18:50
Lydia
I think obviously the those stats are a cause for concern a little bit, especially this early on in the season. And we can't forget some of the players that ManU have. So I think that making sure we're not making silly mistakes is important or is it as always?
00:19:12
Lydia
but people, I think people kind of now expect us to, like you said, dominate in the first 20 minutes and then start falling apart a little bit at the back. So I think we need to make sure that consistency is key and keeping the leads, not allowing the other team to get the goals on the counter is what we really need.
00:19:38
officialgspn
Yeah, I think it's just a more high risk style for what we're playing at the moment. It's more man for man. Even you if you go back to the city game, Harlan and Pinnock were just left for each other and ah when Edison kicked it long.
00:19:45
Lydia
Mm.
00:19:49
officialgspn
And obviously that relies on our defensive players winning their individual jewels against their opponent, which you know that they can do they may do 80% of the time but the 20% of the time that Pinot glosses duel against harland Harlem Harlem is in so I think we just do just have to be a bit careful I think we do have to um think about the right times to be positive and be brave and we do have to try and cut out um mistakes to the back where which which results in high turnovers and Manchester United it can break on us although they're probably not the best team at pressing so I think maybe we can have a bit more joy in playing through anyway.
00:20:31
officialgspn
So then what what would a result of the weekend do for our season? I think after um this weekend, we've got Ipswich at home next week, and then we have a run of fixtures where we don't play any side from the big six for at least five or six games, I think. So where could we be looking if we get a result of the weekend, given that we're already you know on the brink of the top half the table?
00:20:55
Lydia
I think like you said that we've got a good run coming up. If anything, I find we will tend to play worse about against lower teams, so maybe this will give us the confidence we need.
00:21:09
Lydia
And yeah, i why not? I say we can make it to 7th in the next few months.
00:21:16
officialgspn
European tour.
00:21:18
Lydia
Why not? Get the flights booked and holidays ready.
00:21:24
officialgspn
I've always said, and I've been told off from my other podcasts for but getting carried away too much, but I've said if we get to around Christmas time and we're still around where we are now, and these players that are injured are near enough all back,
00:21:37
Lydia
Yeah.
00:21:41
officialgspn
then I think it could be quite an exciting second half of the season. I think if we're doing what we're doing now without Tiago, Whissa, Rika Henry, Hickey, Jensen, the likes of them, and obviously Gustavo Nudez, who we haven't seen yet either. If we can get, and Josh De Silva possibly as well, I could go on. But if we can get to around Christmas and you know most of them are back, then,
00:22:10
officialgspn
I'm looking forward to seeing how we would fare um with more depth on the bench and second half of the season and I would have every reason to be quite positive about it. So and let's do predictions. So I did mine yesterday on the crossover episode. I said it would be a high scoring draw. I said two all mainly because I think we can hurt them. But I also think that we could also make a mistake. And I think they still do have players with quality going forwards. Someone like Bruno Fernandes or Rashford for as often as they haven't really played that well this season, I think they still have.
00:22:48
officialgspn
ah moment of quality in them um where they can just pick up the ball and create something. So I would go 2-2 and I didn't pick goal scores yesterday but I'll go, I think you've always got to go in boom-o and I'll go, oh who should I go with?
00:23:04
Lydia
Yeah,
00:23:12
officialgspn
I'll go with Chris Iyer and I don't know why
00:23:16
Lydia
why not?
00:23:17
officialgspn
But I've got a feeling, maybe a set piece, maybe from a set piece, and obviously Collins and Pinnock got their goals in the last game, so I'm going Chris Iyer this time.
00:23:28
Lydia
I'm gonna say, I was gonna go two, one. And I'm going to be optimistic and go for Brentford.
00:23:35
officialgspn
bre
00:23:37
Lydia
But at the same time, they also desperately need a win. So I'm kind of like, I think there'll be, I don't think it will be a draw and I think it'll be 2-1.
00:23:51
officialgspn
you can't change it now you said we're gonna win
00:23:51
Lydia
Just depends who.
00:23:53
Lydia
Yeah, but I want to be positive, say we're going to win. I definitely think Brian will score and I think that Even though I keep saying Shada's time will come, I don't think it will be Saturday. So I'm going to say... Kevalio.
00:24:08
officialgspn
It's a good place to wrap up. Hopefully your prediction in particular comes true this weekend.
00:24:12
Lydia
Yeah.
00:24:14
officialgspn
