Speaker: Welcome to the DIY Guys, the podcast where home renovations, power tools and mild panic go hand in hand. I'm Nick Morris. And I'm Dan Doher. Each week, we'll be chatting with some property pros, some DIY diehards, hopefully help you with some tips and tricks along the way.

Speaker: Welcome back to the DIY Guys podcast. As always, I'm your co-host Dan and I'm joined by my good friend Nick. How you doing, mate? Very well. Hey, mate. Hey, hey. Very well, mate. It's been a while since we've done this. I'm rusty. I'm good. How are you? Yeah, not too bad. Thanks, mate. Yeah, I feel like I am like you on the last episode where I haven't done any d i want ah Yes, I'm so glad because I've done loads. yeah You've actually motivated me to do loads because I'm like, this is called the DIY guys and you always do all the DIYs. That's really good.

Speaker: But I do have a couple of days booked off next week to do DIYs. Oh, nice. or Maybe I should try and come and have a look at your thing. and the same Yeah, definitely. your thing People don't know I'm doing it. Yeah, come and look at my thing. You can have a look at your loo next week then maybe. Yeah, definitely. yeah Oh, nice. Okay, so let's go straight into What's going on with the downstairs toilet? So I'm off Monday, Tuesday to hopefully get it to a stage where I can then get Jimmy around to plaster. Okay.

Speaker: So plaster board in, I've got to build the dreaded hatch. Oh, yeah. there's part of like under the stairs ah I've got to build out as well. And that will get me ready for plastering. And then when it's plastered, then I can do the floor. And then Nick Plummer can come back and plumb everything in. So, yeah. You geared up? You got the materials? Well, geared up, yeah. I've got like 90% of the materials. There's just a few things hanging over me. But I was going ask you. Sorry, I'm being interrupted. Two buckets. You love a bucket. I've got like one those big plasterers buckets because I'm going have to mix a self-leveler.

Speaker: and level that out. But was like, then that's too big to mix like grout and like adhesive. Like that's a bit overkill, isn't it? So I've got, then got small look. You love a bucket. Every time I see my tool station, like, remember ordering something. And it's just like you have like seven buckets. So you know what I've ordered. You're like, oh, if there's a bucket on there, it's definitely that. I do get confused because order so much on Screwfix and tool stations. When one pops in that's you, I'm just getting totally thrown. Just so confused. Totally thrown. It must annoy you because I'm guessing you have to get all invoices and mess around with stuff like that. you're like...

Speaker: What the hell is this invoice? Oh, actually, just to be fair, not bigging them up for no reason. They're like invoicing stuff so good. It's so easy. You just go on the app and they just email it to you. Or like as soon as it's shipped, Screwfix sends you one. So yeah, it's good. I'm up to day on all my spreadsheet knowledge. Sorry, before I interrupted, were going to say? No, we've ordered these tiles, right?

Speaker: And when Christy ordered them, like, we got a sample sent through. And it looked like a small tile that was probably like, I don't know, like 20 centimetres by 20 centimetres. Oh, yeah, you said the small one because I said that's going to be down in the arse. Yeah, exactly, yeah. What I didn't realise is they cut down the big tile.

Speaker: So, like, it looks like a small tile, but there's like 12 or 9 or something per tile. Okay. So ah feel like that'll be a little bit easier. Yeah.

Speaker: What I didn't realise, right, so it's four, like, so it's nine, I think it's nine, like, it looks like nine small tiles on a big tile. And then there's, like, gaps in between them.

Speaker: So when we were ordering the tiles, we were speaking to the tile company, and they were like, oh, do you need grout for this? We like, what would you recommend, like, any colours that go with the tile, assuming that they would just have, like, a sort of colour match thing. yeah They sent it through, and then I looked at the tile, and was like, that's weird, it's like,

Speaker: brown in between all of them. They sent us like, they recommended this grey grout. was so confused. and I was like, maybe we need to get a brown grout and then it will look like it kind of goes of it. Yeah. But then the company said, apparently,

Speaker: You can grout in the little gaps in between. Really? Yeah. And didn't know if you'd come across that. I've never. I've never seen that. No. Because, like, as an idiot, I was like, why didn't you recommend us a brown grout? yeah. Built into it. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: But think it's, like, slightly indented throughout. And then apparently he said, oh, you can just grout over. ah and then it will match all your joins, which is genius, right? makes sense, doesn't Yeah, I've never bought a tile with like the tiles within the tile type thing. I've only ever bought big or small, or nothing like that. yeah Is it quite a detailed pattern on it and stuff then? i was No, it's kind of like like a black square and then like a white sort of triangle, so it makes the square up, basically. Oh, okay. and And then, yeah, so we're thinking, like oh, we have to buy the grout that goes in between it now. So that actually makes more sense. So... after like making myself look like an idiot like why didn't you send us the brown grout where they've uh they've said oh your tyler should know you could just grout the whole thing damn it so what color were you actually thinking in there or does the brown as it is look actually look all right

Speaker: So, yeah, it was it wouldn't have been our choice. So I'm glad that we can grout over it and we're probably going to go for like a grey. Oh, yeah, nice. um We definitely decided between like a grey or or a black, like white, where the colour is slightly off-white. I think it would look a bit weird and how dirty is like the floor going to get. It's all having like white grout on the walls, isn't it? on Yeah. It's bit crazy. So ah we've gone for like a grey.

Speaker: I think that's a good choice. We have a white tile in our bathroom and the grout gets dirty and you get like a grout cleaner thing. oh Which works a little bit, but it's never quite as new. Old Nick the Plumber did say you can just like scrape it back and re-grout little bits. Which I'm tempted to do, but seeing as I've done some DIY this week and it took me so long. that I don't think I'll end up doing it. just ignore it forever. it actually DIY on your house? or is this Yeah, that's what know because it's it's a bit Saying DIY on the bungalow all the time is kind of a funny one because it is do-it-yourself, but it's also a yeah, I've done stuff on on my house. Oh, amazing. What been up to?

Speaker: I've done loads of little bits actually. So um we've got this like bit between our bathroom. We made a Jack and Jill bathroom. So there's two doors, one to the landing and one goes through to that Lydia's bedroom. And there's like a little like wardrobe bit in there that i I think I said a few weeks ago, well, like a few months ago, I built the Ikea packed wardrobe. And do you remember that? I said they've changed and they're so much better now. Yeah. Literally, I'd say that.

Speaker: a quarter of the time to fit. It's like six or something. It's really clever. yeah um And then I ordered the smallest wardrobe they did, which I think was 35 by like two meters tall or something solely to rip apart because they don't give you end panels or filler panels or anything. So it was so good because it was 56 pound, I think. for a tiny little wardrobe.

Speaker: Yeah. um But what I needed was a table saw. So I waited until Stuart was at the bungalow. nice And used his table saw to um cut, because had to cut like a 20 mil bit filler one end of the wardrobe and like a 45 mil filler on the other side. and then what I used was on the other side,

Speaker: I cut down it to make like a little, all our teddies on there, but it's like a shelf for Lydia. Yeah. But like about, it's about a metre and a half long, but eventually it could be kind of a desk or something. Yeah. But it's just we just had this big gap on the left.

Speaker: um And then I did it today and like glued it all down. And then, um, put her teddies on and she literally loves stuff like that. It's wicked because she acts all big and all grown up. And then she sees her teddies lined up she's like so pleased. So you built like a little desk. Yeah, yeah. So I used some posh stuff. I used leftover baton from the outdoor barbecue. So it's like cedar wood. So it was like a grand for all the stuff, but I had so much left over, was like, I'm no way for this, I'm going to use it for rest of my life. I've used some at Grands.

Speaker: We had like about a six inch gap between the neighbor's house. oh yeah Maybe a bit more actually than that. Maybe more like a foot gap between the neighbor's house and her house. So I put cedarwood in there to like fill the gap and I'm going to do the same at the back. And then i was like, yeah, what can I use for batten? was like, this cedarwood is perfect because it looks smart as well. As long as I cut it and put the cut bits on like the inside or whatever, it just looks like a nice piece of wood and not like you know like the bright, cheap ones you get with roof patterns and stuff like that. course, yeah. So i did that and then Emily was oh, well, while you're up here, I did buy a curtain for like Lydia. I was like, what?

Speaker: She's already got blackout blind, but now getting a curtain as well. And then i actually am in the process of building um a dressing table for Emily in the dressing room as well. oh and She's got a tiny little gap. It's like 50 centimetres. So again, I've battened it out in there and done all of the hard work. But now i've just got to find...

Speaker: a piece to like go in there i was like going through grand's kitchen the other day looking for like shelves and stuff to cut down yeah but actually i say it's 50 it's not it's 58 centimeters wide and carcasses are naturally like 60 centimeters all the shelves are much smaller than that yeah but can't find a shelf or anything to go there so i'm gonna don't know i'm gonna keep biding my but time until like i get a bit of worktop off cut or something yeah yeah just so she can have a little dressing table because She's just got crap everywhere. I was going to say, like if you reached out to Marco, maybe little offcut.

Speaker: I've asked him so many times for that. I feel like I can't, even though I'm sure he would do it but yeah yeah He literally made three sinks for me for free like and in our in our house. He was like, I've got offcuts galore. You can obviously imagine, but...

Speaker: I used him on the outdoor barbecue couple of months ago, but um I haven't seen him since. I've got to wait to see someone in person for asking these favourites. I didn't want to make it too heavy as well because it is only three pieces of batten and then one of them is just into the another different Ikea wardrobe. So it's not like the strongest, just wood on wood. So yeah, that's what I was like. I've got to up my DIY game after just you just banging on about all the stuff you're doing and me doing nothing. yeah um So yeah, that's that's what I've been doing at home. But it's just amazing how long it takes at home compared to... yeah Even Grands now has transitioned over to it's looking so smart.

Speaker: So everything you do takes ages because there's floor protection down. You've got to protect everything. You've got like, oh, you can't just like... Oh, screw drops on the floor. You don't know I'll leave it. I've got to go and find that in case it scratches. or yeah It's like that at home, isn't it? Doing DIY. Oh, 100%. I literally worked in Tootin this morning doing a fuse board and like an a light I put a light in the loft, light switch in the loft. And so I finished really early because I got there for 7, finished at 12, and then I got back to mine about 1.30, something like that.

Speaker: And was like, I'll go and do bits. I had like... three and a bit hours before picking up Lydia was like smashed that out just barely did anything by the time you like get set up get everything ready it's so depressing you're like I've spent three hours and it doesn't look like I've done anything yeah whereas three hours at Grand's at the moment I could put on like the other day I did Like about, how how many sockets was it? Maybe 15 sockets in like 45, 50 minutes. Wow. It's just different, isn't it? Yeah. It's just so much harder at home. Yeah, so true, isn't it? Yeah. But yeah, no, Grands is um obviously DIY technically as well. Yeah, true. Different. It's flying. I think by the next, I think the next episode will be done.

Speaker: If not done, it will be like carpets and... yeah Maybe a bit of builder stuff, like the crazy paving, patching it in at the back and stuff like that. But basically, it's been chaos. I i was there on Tuesday, and there was six of us.

Speaker: Was there six including me? Yeah. there's the painter, two plumbers, the carpenter, um the window guy doing the porch, and me. So the painter, obviously...

Speaker: I don't need to tell you what I'm saying. Plumbers were doing the kitchen sink, the utility sink, hanging all the radiators. Oh, doing all the external pipe work because they didn't bring anything out from at the kitchen utility sink. Yeah. um And doing some little bits in the loft. I got the carpenter finishing off the kitchen. So he was doing like the nice bits light to finish it, like the plimps and the pelmets and stuff like that. And then the got window guy was doing the porch and the door out from the porch all that. ah So it was chaos. And then I was like, oh, that's the Tuesday's the only day i can do this week. yeah So I went there and i was like, I got there. like, there's nothing I can actually do because there was just extensionally, I had, i think had maybe like five sockets, just extensionally plugged into all my sockets. Everyone used and everything. I was like, I need to turn this off yeah to do anything. But I figured out a hack that I bought.

Speaker: cooker switch and hob switch. You can buy a switch with a socket on. So I've started doing that now. yeah yeah So then I've wired up those first, put the um sockets on, so then there's two separate circuits with extension leads going up, because the painter was like, if I put um what he's he's like machinery into normal extension lead and it's all coiled up it's like it'll just melt the plug because he's got such like wattage like sand and everything down and stuff so i was like guys gotta turn off the power and i knocked the power literally six people like oh But I can't complain, apart from the fact, you're like, this is so exciting.

Speaker: yeah But it's basically like loads of 300 pounds like walking about. I don't even know if 300 pounds is underselling it. You're just a bit like, oh my God, it's mental. The cost in humans alone is... Exactly. You're not even thinking of materials and stuff. You're like, oh, God, I've got actually play these people. So yeah, that's where I'm at. So it's going really well.

Speaker: Amazing. That's so good. Just got to get a valuation soon. Yeah. So do you wait until you're like done, done? Yeah. I find, um, I use the same estate agents as most of the stuff I've done has been in the same area. Um, and I've done it early before. She'd like, I'd be good to get a valuation because it would help with X, Y, Z. But,

Speaker: sometimes you just like anyone you can't see the finish and like who knows you could like throw in some horrible brown carpet or something yeah or you could spend a bit more money have like a really plush nice one and that might make a difference in their thinking i don't know but i've i've got them in the past like we need to come back again yeah so i know who i'm using already they give me like a really low rate um because we've used them so much i think it's like yeah what I think depends on the value. It's been as low as 0.55 before, whereas I think most people get 1% or higher. yeah like Most people probably negotiate to 1%. So I'm definitely going to use them. But yeah, the valuation part is scary. Like, did I just break even all yeah all this time? Waste a load of money. Just waste a load of money. but yeah, it's so hard to know.

Speaker: Oh, that's amazing. So any trades done done or they still got little bits and bobs? Yeah, I've been trying to think of who's ticking off. So no more skips. I'm like, yeah, I did one dump run in the dump near you. Still the most satisfying thing. Yeah, I love guys. It's just so, like, the car was piled up. I took Lydia's car seat out, took the big car. Nice. Literally filled it up. was going, no, it's got so much in there. Yeah. It's just so satisfying. I was really annoyed down there because I had to queue to get in. You have to book it and everything, don't you? Yeah, yeah. Absolute farcical. Some people just go with a little bucket or two of stuff. I'm like, what are you doing? I know, yeah. Take up all this space. It's wasting your time. Wasting your time. Surely you can build it up a bit or something. Yeah. So, yeah. So, I got rid of all the carpets. So, yeah, no more skips. So, that's one little tick box. Who has finished? Someone's finished. Oh, carpenter finished on Tuesday.

Speaker: Nice. No more from him. Conveniently, now there's no skips. he doesn't want to come back he literally he's like i've got bit of cardboard for your skipper as you're working here i guess i reckon he's filled even if you said 10 of the skip is like 36 quid yeah exactly and swear it's more than 10 percent he's taken off massively yeah just got to bite the bullet so it's cardboard you can literally take that yeah i know so annoying it's not even his it's like a client or something yeah yeah So yeah, the flooring guy has finished all the MT codes down now.

Speaker: and All the skirting is done, all the architraves are done, all the door liners are done. But Toby, good old Toby listener, tony number one one fan number one of two, yeah um he's done he's done all the skirting. wanted Carlton to do it, but he just was too busy. yeah So he's done all the skirts and all the arbitrages, all the door lines and he him or Dave are coming back next week to do the doors. So I ordered those today. um Have you ever heard JigTech?

Speaker: No. Never heard. it I'm going to try. It's probably all over ah over YouTube already, but it's um it's like a kit for doing the the door handles and the door stops and everything oh yeah um and the latches and everything. It looks so clever. It's like a clamp, like in a U shape.

Speaker: oh And he obviously there must be a set height. These things always are, which I don't know. um And you just put it in, like literally line it up, slot it on and it's got like drill hole here, drill hole here, drill hole here and you literally can fix it out and it does even locks at the top and stuff. And my builder was like, oh, actually haven't done like hundreds of doors. I know how to do it. But if you get this JigTech system for me, it's like so easy. I've got the key at home. got all the drill bits. I just need the... um the actual compliant handles yeah and they were 22 pounds or something from howden so they weren't even like that bad really so i've ordered those i'm gonna i'll film it and let you know how it goes yeah i want to try to do one myself i have to do it done a bit of stuff but with guidance yeah other people like wouldn't do it because these doors are think they were 66 pounds or something i got you know i caggled down quite a lot Oh, really? So I got a quote from Howden's and they were 75 plus VAT, so 90. I've gone down to 66. Wow. Just shows if you actually like, I was like, oh, thanks, but I've seen the exact same doors yeah on this website. um

Speaker: And it was called Build Something. Yeah. And it was literally 65.99. And it was an offer down from like 70. But then it was like a tenor It was 60 quid delivery for six, have tenner on top. So I said, well, I found these doors for like 76 quid all in or 60. And she got went down and down and down again until she matched it. And I was like, I would rather use Howden's because i'm I can actually pick up tomorrow I want to or I'm getting it delivered on Monday. Yeah.

Speaker: um So it's just interesting to know you can actually haggle with these places. Yeah, I never thought of haggling with people like that. just thought the price was the price, right? Yeah, the only thing I've done is all the Howdens and there's a few other places like this, they work separately, different profit centres. So I have phoned like two nearby ones before because they always differ in price. It's never the same. Oh, wow. It's obviously not that much. But yeah, it's mad. They obviously just have their own discounts and stuff. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, she went from putting me on like 20-something percent to like 40-something percent. So was like, oh, hopefully that stays there now. Yeah, definitely. But it's good little tip, if anyone. I know it's trade-only houses, isn't it? so if you're self-employed, don't have to be in the trade. You can still get an account

Speaker: It's funny, though. it's just You need time to be able to find these things, though. Because if I was just rushing, the doors are in my house, so I like them. So I just would have been like, oh, fine, that's price order. It's only because I had some time. was going to see if I can find others. And there's basically 20 websites all selling the same doors. You've just got to look around and find it.

Speaker: Did you get the, maybe Dave's got them, the inflatable things that lift the doors up? No. i've never known My old school carpenter would never use everything. He'd just like put stuff in his back like a bear and just like move stuff around. Does it with massive kitchen units and stuff. He's that Nick, can you move it a little bit? I'm like, nothing moves. But no, I wonder if he has got that. Why wouldn't you use that? No, it's so good like when you put them in, because I did the doors on Whitehouse, you put it in, obviously you have to like hold it in place to work out where all the light brackets and stuff go. And you just pump it up. It's genius. And you pump it up full of air and it like lifts the door up.

Speaker: So you know that everything fits as well before you even start adding all the handles and bits and pieces. Oh, nice. I love how much kit you have. You have so much more than me. And I know don't do it five days a week, I'm doing it more than you. you have way more stuff than me. just love a tool, mate. Tell you don't have a table saw. No, I don't have a table saw.

Speaker: I was going to say, that's pretty bespoke. Yeah. I look to get them one, but they're so expensive. And you've got to store them as well. Yeah. And actually, if anything, you could chop your hand off with it. yeah it's probably my stewart's um like i've just taken the guard off of his as well he said it gets in his way and annoys him it's just this like bare blade just like sitting on the floor yeah and i just like and then like he pushes it through and then the last bit gets like a little sticky yeah yeah push it for you just like jesus but i caught him in a good mood because i told him i need these end panels cut for lydia's wardrobe yeah um and he'd just been on holiday so he came back on the money was like it might be like grumpy Yeah. It was the complete opposite. It was like all suntanned and rested. I there, he like, do you want to do that now?

Speaker: I was like, what? This isn't like you. It's a different person. Yeah, it was amazing. Oh, awesome. So, yeah, and then you were saying, like, who's finished? It's one of those annoying things. was like, yeah, people have finished, but actually, I think... I bet there's, like, loads of little jobs. Yeah. Right.

Speaker: I mean, in terms of, like, rooms... You know what, who's nearly finished? I've forgotten me. i've got I've literally got an hour, i would say two hours of work left. i did all I did such a satisfying job the other day. So I put the fuse board on about six months ago or something just because I upgraded to a really like fancy one and it would trip if anything goes wrong blah, blah, blah.

Speaker: um But I left all like the trunking and making all the cables neat, so all the cables were just like lashed in there. yeah So I spent like an hour doing all the nice trunking and I put the cooker switch and the hob switch in this cupboard all nice. and And now I'm like, every time I've that cover, I'm so proud of it. Even putting on the labels, i was trying to put them all straight. And then my writing, my writing was really crap and I was really annoyed by myself. I should have. I went on the job today and I did a fuse board and the girl had like a fine point pen. Because they give you, the square is like 10 mil by 10 mil. it's tiny. And you have to write like light. So I had to write today, live, bedroom one, hall, down, all on like this thing. And I used her pen. was like, oh, this is a amazing. I've just got to get one just for fuse boards. There should be like a little, you know, you can get like sticker makers. Yeah. one of those where you can I've got a sticker maker. oh It's great for switches. so you can put hob or oven on the actual switch. But again, this square on the fuse board is so tiny. yeah Even if you do the smallest font and just write sockets, it'll probably cover like that much.

Speaker: It just takes too much. yeah But people that do do the stickers on Instagram, you're just like, oh yeah, you're a different level. yeah try am i try I did it with a Sharpie. and I was like, oh, this doesn't actually look that good now. I might actually just put a new label on and do it again. I have nearly finished. i've got I've put all you know those Dunelm lights I said I was buying. I'm glad I did that now. It's 450 quid. and Another tip if anyone's out there wanting the Dunelm stuff, because Dunelm are great. originally went there to get today to return a mirror thing I bought. but um did you We went there today. I don't even know where It's like Becquenham Way. I was there so weird. and Then i went to that really nice cafe near and got me an working from home. yeah sponge kitchen and Yeah, I was there today because, um I take back that thing, but if you buy a lot of stuff, so i was buying 500 pounds, haven't said this already, hopefully on here. No. if you buy five I was buying 500 pounds worth of lights. If you download the app,

Speaker: Whoever downloads the app, they just want you download the app, obviously. They give you 10% off. Oh, wow. So thought that was really good little tip because I searched on AI, your friend. Yeah. They all just download the app to get a discount. I was like, yeah, sweet. genius, isn't it? 50 quid or whatever. Every little helps. always love that when you're ordering stuff from a website and you go on there and it goes like, Luke, I spent like 10%. I'm like, yes.

Speaker: But don't you always be like, oh, this is annoying. You get rid of it. You're like, oh I you do like that. I mean, like come back and it just doesn't come back. You're like trying other browsers and stuff. It doesn't come back. I always screenshot it just in case. Oh, that's quite a good idea. i'm like constant Then I've just got like a million screenshots of all these websites and I can't find the one I need. You just feel like you're winning, don't you, when you get something like that, even though it's so built in.

Speaker: Yeah. and How much extra they're making anyway. Yeah, exactly. It just feels like little wins. Well, it's 50 quid that you save, right? that is I said I was going to do that on that spreadsheet from the beginning, and just lost track, so it's so impossible. but it'd be fascinating to know, like, savings everything. Yeah, yeah. And what people out there must save, even, like... I was going to paint this room, like get a painter, paint this room, he charged me 600 quid and I did it for 50 quid. Yeah. It'd be awesome to see who's like, whoever's saved the most. Yeah. Like where you saved the most. Yeah. But then some dudes would probably like build their own house and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. yeah yeah yeah

Speaker: But yeah, so I've got one hall light to put up. One light. The only light I haven't checked from Dunhill yet is because I was really impressed with them. They're all actually quite smart lights. I had to annoyingly,

Speaker: They did this nice ceiling light for the living room and they did matching wall lights, but they were plug-in ones. So it's like got a hard wire cable. It's for obviously people that don't have the cables hanging wall and there's a plug below. They just plug it in and obviously like tack it to the wall something. and i was like, oh, that's so annoying. They literally did not do a match for it other than these wall lights with the blooming cable in. So i was like, I'll risk ordering it and to see what it comes like.

Speaker: And when I got it, there's a little hole, obviously, with the cable coming out, but had like a rubbery, washery thing in it. And when I disconnected the cable from it, the washer thing just like filled the holes. Basically, you can get your finger in there, obviously. It like fails all the tests or whatever, but the rubbery thing left like the teeniest. And it's on top. So I was like, oh, and it looks so much better. So you could wire that in by removing the car. Exactly, yeah, because it's just the plug on a wire going into the back, so I just removed the wire and you've still got the bit in the back.

Speaker: um So, yeah, but anyone could actually do that at home. If you've got the wall-light wire already there, you could do it. But I'm surprised they don't just sell that normally. Yeah, with and without. Yeah, because it's a really nice little light. It's like... It's small. I didn't want anything big. and It's quite subtle. It just matches the ceiling really well.

Speaker: But all of the Dunelm Lites I've been really impressed with. i thought I'd just have to send some back. yeah and I haven't sent anything back over in this tiny mirror I bought that was crap. yeah Why were you there today? I'm interested. We were picking some stuff up. Christy ordered two pillows and ah this basket that's going to have all baby changes. Oh, right. You think if you get to 60 quid, it's free delivery on Dunelm.

Speaker: I know, yeah. It's so annoying when you're under. it Yeah, exactly, yeah. Plus Chrissie likes to go there and have a little walk. One floor is really good and one floor is utter shit. I'll do a few photos like this. You go upstairs and there's lights, there's photos and frames and stuff and then downstairs there's like curtains and embroidery and stuff like that and I'm just like, oh, this is awful down here. It's got like a little cafe in it. Yeah, yeah. doesn't seem big enough to have a cafe. I took Lydia there and there's books to buy not to actually read and we just like picked up and read like loads of books and just put them back and left. I was like, this great. Nice little place. Another hack. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. I um became so middle-aged though, because we've got the Amtico here. I've said to you before, it's a concrete floor with Amtico and stuff. We've constantly got sore feet. So I bought like old man slippers for an hour. Oh, did you? Have you got slippers? I had slippers, but like...

Speaker: It's pretty gross. I get sweaty feet, so they just stink. yeah I have to fly them away every year after the winter. It's so disgusting. I thought you were going to say your feet just get really hot, that they actually stink after the winter. cannot just wash them.

Speaker: You can do, but then it's a bit gross. So now I just buy slippers like for the winter and then f throw them away. But they literally, they're all there and they're all the most old-mannish ones. and I was just just deliberating, like, what is the least old-mannish one? And I got home and they literally are like 90% similar to Emily's exact slippers as well as that, for God's sake. And they're like furry and soft. Yeah, you see them stand together and you're like, when did we get home? Yeah, I know. One of these little pipes. Yeah, yeah, and one of those smoking jackets.

Speaker: And I walked outside and there loads of young people and actually genuinely fell off the little hook thing on the floor. was like, God, I'm going scrambling. I'm frightened and can't scrambling inside. It's alcohol. It's alcohol. Yeah, it's drugs. I've had loads of drugs.

Speaker: So yeah, getting back to it, I've nearly finished. um I think, yeah, kitchen light over the island, which always takes forever because it's... um I bought one that's easier for me because it's one thing on the ceiling. Yeah, yeah. But it goes down into three. Yeah. So it's such a pain in the ass to get them...

Speaker: um like I've got a technique that gets you like 99% there, but then you get out and then just little bits of fiddling and depending on the light. Some lights are brilliant and you can adjust whilst it's up on. Yeah. And some you have to do like when it's like down under it. You just got pray and just keep mucking about. Oh, so painful. The worst light that we've got, I think you put it up, but you just put it up.

Speaker: Sounds like you say bodged. Yeah, yeah. You bodged this light up. So you put it up and wired it in, but it's like a chandelier thing with loads of little hangy bits on it. hate those. And I had to add all of those on. And for some strange reason, I'm constantly like, I'll put a t-shirt on and then I'll knock four off and I'm like, God damn it. Yeah. Christy's like, why do you do that all the time? was like, I'm not doing it on purpose. There's one light in our bedroom and I always knock it. It must be when I take my hoodie off something, must go up and goes boom and it goes down. I hate... That's why...

Speaker: um I'm really like fussy now with big big jobs. about I used to just say, I'll buy any light and I'll sort it. yeah You could spend like 45 minutes putting stuff get it together. yeah like The wiring can take like a minute and then like fixing it up could might take two or three minutes. But you actually putting it together mad. And then you get different lengths. That's what I say. I say, yeah you want me to put up a fancy light, you build it, you decide on the length.

Speaker: yeah um because even at Grenz I've got these hanging lights but I could only use one little you know on like a chain yeah only one because the scenes are low ah so I was like god I'm just playing with this because it's it's kind of like if you were 6 foot 8 probably or 7 you'd hit your head Wow. And i was like, oh, I don't if it's too low. Yeah. um But yeah, anyway, it looks fine. But that's what always say to people now. You've got to just build your own light get it out. Yeah, I'll feel it, but you've got build it. The chain ones are the worst. I think I had that my lounge where was like adjusting it. bit Oh, so annoying. Like trying to prise it open and stuff. i like Yeah. And they don't come with like little... You just have to get pliers, don't you? And just open it. And then when you shut it, it never closes as nicely. Yeah, it never looks as good, does it? Sometimes you get one that does actually untwist and it's nice. Yeah, yeah. Generally, it's just cheap crap. Yeah, exactly. yeah It doesn't seem to matter who it is. i I've bought like really good ones from John Lewis and I've had really bad ones from John Lewis. Or like, Darnell, and you're like, oh, these are cheap. These are going naff and they're good. Also, you get some that are just bad. But...

Speaker: It's just annoying that the people designing these things never think of who's installing them. Yeah. It's really irritating. Oh, it looks some amazing. Yeah. So I think I'm about two hours away from finishing. mate. So I've just been like tidy and tidy and tidy and getting rid of cardboard, getting rid of all this stuff. Yeah. It was quite satisfying on Tuesday because... um wired up in where I've like put sockets in all the cupboards for like the dishwasher and the washing machine a a few weeks ago. yeah And then so I was helping Stuart lift the dishwasher in and then you get that satisfying, you have plugged in, I've done all the work already. He was like, where's the socket for this? was like, well, it's already done, it's in that cover, not that cover.

Speaker: And even you've had like a room full of stuff it just goes down and down. Yeah, yeah. That was so nice. Yeah. It's definitely like the nice thing. It must be hard. Obviously, this is so much easier than most people have because we're not living there.

Speaker: Yes. It must be so. By now, I think people, if you're living like you've always done, you're just fed up at this point. um Yeah, exactly. Just want to get of there. Yeah. ah like Like, we've got all the materials and stuff for the downstairs toilet.

Speaker: Chrissy's like, I can't wait until I get, like, my, like, kitchen back where it's not, like, loads of stuff piled up. Yeah, even, like, Lydia's birthday was on early September. and Emily's birthday is late August and we just had loads of cardboard for like ages just like deliveries and we got her like a cheap desk oh another thing I built I forgot and Emily built something as well I bought like the cheapest desk we could find in Ikea and we saw it on holiday and um stuck Lego on top you know the big balls of Lego yeah so i say Lego it was a knockoff

Speaker: I looked and to get these balls would have been £55 of the Lego but and it was £12 of this matching one. All the reviews were like, it fits Lego perfectly. It's exactly the same. Yeah. So i've just got Blu-Tac, which I haven't used in like 30 years. Yeah. It's quite like nostalgic. I would use this at school and stuff. Still, it was a pound, wasn't it?

Speaker: Oh, mate. it's something in the world hasn't mucked up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. also you could get white tack and purple tack and stuff i've no idea what's the point yeah i was like oh okay um so we see i stuck all these things on and then we've got like a little lego table and in the drawers is where you keep all the lego and it's quite nice because lady can sit one side and i can sit the other and you just actually quite it's quite fun yeah just playing with lego all day the only thing i didn't have was lego yeah i did steal a little box my mom had i'm just going to look on facebook marketplace i was about to say surely so it must massive bags of that. Oh, look, there's tons. It's just hassle we've actually sorted it. I've already done that recently on her scooter. Like again, it was 180 new or something. Yeah. And it was like 50 quid on Facebook Marketplace and this thing looks so suspiciously new.

Speaker: Me and Em are just like, I hope it's not like dodgy or anything. The break is going down on his heels and the break just like him falls off. But the more we've looked at it's just an absolute bargain. The guy just said his daughter didn't like it, didn't use it. I'm always worried like Christy gets a lot of stuff off there. And then she's like, oh, will you go and pick out it up? It's always like some sketchy area. I'm going to die for like a dining table. Yeah. yeah yeah Yeah, and actually the brake on her old scooter went as well. It actually did break, but it didn't crumble apart. just started to go. I was really wary of that when I got up. I just looked at it and was like, it was fine. But anyway, so Em did some DIY as well. was funny. So I literally just built that desk and she built Lydia this like...

Speaker: tent like uh yeah tent thing um where you put all these poles together like almost like a tent when you're camping yeah um it was just so funny because she just did it all and then she was like can you help me said just built the desk the desk was way harder took me like an hour and a half or something that was using my tools as well yeah yeah i was just i really don't want to help you and then she was okay was just sitting there and then she tried to put like this cover over it She's like, it just doesn't fit. And was like, well, she just basically, not one single connection did she put in properly.

Speaker: So she's like slid the pole in and just left it short every time. So then I to go in every connection be like, boom, boom, boom. She was like, I'm just not strong enough. And my ego was like, yeah, I'm manly. Yeah, yeah. makes you feel bad. She did that to make you feel bad. Yeah, it's probably a massive play. and then I get to do more yeah stuff together.

Speaker: I still feel like there's a business, though, of just delivering stuff made. Yeah. At this stage of my life, i' would pay more, even though have things called the DIY guys. I would just pay more to have stuff delivered at this point. Yeah, exactly. We even got a new chair in the um hall.

Speaker: um Oh, that was Dunelm as well, I think. And had to put that together. And you're like, it's a chair with four legs. It can't be that hard. It was like 16 screws. Oh, yeah. Lydia helped me putting all the bolts and stuff on a washer. She did a wicked job. yeah i was like, can you copy that 16 times?

Speaker: And she went, boom, boom, boom, boom. And I was like, oh, she's awesome. Oh, amazing. Yeah, she screwed something. Rent around. Yeah. Go and put together people's chairs. I've done loads of DIY now, racking them off. I forgot. I don't include stuff like putting chairs together. i actually failed on putting, sounds pathetic, like putting a mirror on the wall. Oh. Because it was like our bathroom, which is like stud work.

Speaker: And had some leftover, like, stud screws for the plasterboard, you know, the ones you put in and you squeeze in. Yeah. So I squeezed it, squeezed it, squeezed it, and then it it just but broke through the plaster. Oh, so annoying. So I'm now gonna have to buy another.

Speaker: thing and try and work it like fill it and then try and work it out but is the brake big enough for the mirror doesn't like know you don't want bodge it completely but hide a bit of the damage or you can just move it yeah it should but I've got to put something in there for the screw to go oh yeah cool so I'm looking up like options for hanging that's the thing because the mirror is quite heavy as well Have you seen those like wired-y things? I don't know what they're made of. It looks like metal of some kind. So you know the old trick is you put a bit of baton or something in the wall. You put a glass board in there. There's basically like a metal version of that now.

Speaker: Oh, okay. mean just it's like in It's like wings that go in like that and then you just put the wings in and then it screws right into the metal rather than a bit of wood. It's essentially doing the same thing as the timber. It's just, I guess, bit better. it It must be slightly better executing it. Yeah, You can just like plaster right onto it and stuff. It's quite clever. Okay, genius, yeah. I've seen some other cool stuff actually. You're saying that's reminding me. My Instagram is just, we we we seem to follow the same people. But have you seen the drill bit that cuts holes in all directions?

Speaker: No. So it's like a circular drill bit for like doing, you know, normal holes for a raw plug or whatever. But it can just go in any direction you want. Like die like just like around. And I guess it's like,

Speaker: You use a multi-tool normally in like a plasper wall or something or yeah jigsaw or something. No, not a jigsaw. What's the word looking for? No, maybe it would be jigsaw. Yeah, jigsaw. But um yeah, you can literally just go all over with this. And it's just designed the way it's like been cut just to not like rip everything to shreds and be all neat. no Absolute genius. That's so cool. I made the mistake of clicking on it and now I've had that advert, you know, every day for like three weeks. That's the only annoying thing. It's so irritating. Yeah, it's cool at first, but don't need to see it 20 times. Yeah, yeah. And then also, this other thing, and I just never know what to believe these days, but i saw some, like, therapist thing say this about, have you ever seen this one about LED lights?

Speaker: No. and It's like, LED lights are everywhere, but the type of light we expose ourselves to, especially at night, can influence our circadean rhythm don away circadian rhythm. What? Where did this come from? Yeah, yeah. How did you know that? Yeah, it's about how you're, like,

Speaker: you're awake when you're awake and then Who are you? Yeah, exactly. How do you know this? Circadian rhythm. How the hell you know that? I have no idea. just know random stuff. I know this next word, sleep.

Speaker: yeah And the signals our ourselves receives. ah Supporting your health isn't just about what you eat or what supplements you take. Your environment matters too. And it's this whole, that was just obviously the description, this whole video about all these like the certain types of light. like Oh yeah, blue light and stuff like that. Yeah, and there's certain lights that be better. I thought it was quite interesting. Yeah.

Speaker: it I probably know it, stuff like that, because I work on a screen all day. and then blue light, which is what you get off like screens and stuff, it does mess up your circadian rhythm. It does like like wake you up, basically. Yeah. Because obviously, if you think of like natural light, when we were like cavemen and stuff, it would be like fire, which is like warm, sort of red light. But blue light so it sends different signals yeah your brain to keep you awake.

Speaker: It blew my mind and now it blows my mind you know that word. I've never heard that word in my life. That's impressive knowledge. yeah yeah hello it's good like i suppose It's good to know and I suppose it helps.

Speaker: I think when you put in the LED strips in my kitchen, you can change the type of light that's right. So either you can have like the bright sort of like blue light or you can have the sort of softer sort of red tones of lights and that's you use that more in an evening so it doesn't like, so it slows like your, your, um, you down basically so you know it's ready for like bedtime. I've never used, um, white light ever.

Speaker: ah There was this phase where we we were told to put white lights in bathrooms. It's obviously brighter in some way or whatever. Yeah. And then warm lights in like other rooms. But I've just always put warm, I just always preferred warm white. Yeah. I've no idea which is actually better. White, this is a,

Speaker: light that actually changes but I guess white light is worse for you then yeah yeah well kind of I suppose it's got different uses right and I think that I suppose that's quite a good point when you're looking at lights for a room how are you going to be using that room like we We quite like to turn off the big light yeah when we're like watching TV. Oh, yeah, surely everyone does. It'd be a psychopath to have a big light on watching a TV. So Christy always moans at me because I'll put light the big light on and then i'll just lay down and watch TV. She's like, hell you in here? You're a psychopath. But it's just the laziness of not wanting get off and put the lamp on.

Speaker: But yeah, like having like softer sort of red tone lights that are nicer for you in the evening, I suppose. Is that why offices, they have all those horrible lights that keep you awake? Yeah, yeah. Or like casinos and stuff that. Oh, Jesus, yeah. Just keeps you all going and stimulated, basically.

Speaker: I'm learning stuff. There you go. You're an electrician, you should know this stuff. I just know what looks nice and I don't know what it actually does to me. I can't believe you watch TV the main light on. That would annoy me so much. And then she'll be like, oh, and the blinds are open. You ever seen that Instagram? I think he something like 15 million just likes on it. It's like, oh, trying to watch TV during the day.

Speaker: ever see Yeah, yeah. And it was him on a massive reflection. well He was like, i can't believe what this video's done. And all I ah can't see views, but it just said 15 million likes. Wow. i was like, bloody hell. And it's just like a 20-second clip, or like 10-second clip. You're like, you bastard. It's hilarious. So good, yeah.

Speaker: Observational quality is always like, I love that sort of stuff. It's always the best. just can't come up with it. No, yeah, exactly. doing my boring DIY. Yeah, yeah. I'm back being an electrician. Yeah.

Speaker: So, yeah, so i'll hopefully next... right If we're doing one in two weeks, I think everything will be done apart from... anything the builders have just got finish like they've got to do now the porch glass is in yeah actually haven't seen it normally when i was there um he was doing all the frame and then the door arrived the same time so he's doing all the frame the door but i've got to um render or plan i i guess it's inside yeah plaster board and plaster the inside of the porch now okay one of those jobs like you're saying yeah think that'd be blooming like

Speaker: right at the end yeah yeah it's one those things you have viewings without that I feel like it's got to be done done yeah this looks a bit shabby if that you can just see block work from a porch light on the inside and stuff yeah I remember like years ago me and Christy were like viewing this house it was a builder that lived there. I think he was actually... Never know if that's good or bad. exactly. It just depends, doesn't it?

Speaker: I think he was actually somehow knew our mate Tell. Oh, really? can't remember why, yeah. I think he like knew his cousin or something like that. But we were viewing this house and he had renovated it, but he'd like he was living there, so he wasn't like building it to to get rid of it. But it was like constantly like, oh yeah, I've got to do this and I've got to do that. And it was just like constant like, oh yeah, i haven't put the handle on this door yet. And it was by the end of it, it's like, yeah, but if we put an offer in, like how do you make them do everything? have to put it in writing. You know yeah have to. But it was like, and then you're like, well, is he just going to rush it? Oh yeah, that was it. It was like, sorry, we've had a leak, so I've got to replace the bathroom.

Speaker: That just clear it completely changes everything. do sometimes feel like an architect's house is like the worst house or whatever. I've always said about doing tiny bits of DIY. You just don't get around to doing it, do you? Yeah, true. my My plumber at the moment is building a garden room for himself. He said it started off as a shed. yeah It's now transformed into a massive camera. and He's just like, oh I do like three hours every Saturday or something. yeah It's taken me like nine months and it's just like nothing done so far.

Speaker: suppose that's the whole thing with DIY, right? It's like you do it in your spare time. So it's like you're kind of restricted with how much work you can actually do, right? Yeah.

Speaker: Like putting up fencing or stuff like that. It's just like you could do it, but it's going to take me like two weeks to do it. and i don't even know what the easiest job could possibly be, but anything I need tools for, I just always say to you I need like my tool bag, I need my drill box with all the drills in, yeah and I need a screw tray. So I always need three things. And then you need like dust sheets. Yeah. Then need a hoover.

Speaker: you're like, oh, that's five things I've got to do for like putting up a couple of frames or a curtain. It's just time consuming. Oh, it's so true. people like have we've spoken to on here is mad when they're just like doing massive like foundations and stuff and doing all worms. So it's insane. It's impressive, isn't it? that's why that Bram Hall building is still going. I want speak to those guys again. yeah They must be nearly five years in now. Yeah. It looks wicked. It does look good. It's an impressive house.

Speaker: Yeah. Surely they'll stay there. Yeah. They were like, oh, we're a bit tempted to sell and move on. Yeah. Surely not. Surely not, yeah. How long you think it takes to actually, like, even me, I've been in two years in December.

Speaker: i dot um like I don't think I'm ever going to get to a point where we're done. Yeah. we still haven't got curtains in every room. We've got, like, temporary like cheaper plant so we're slowly getting cursed and slowly doing yeah I feel like it takes 10 years to get everything you need oh it's so good then you've got to refresh everything yeah exactly I'm more annoyed is like built that our third bedrooms like we run all those cables so I can plug into the internet and stuff like that in there And that's just going to become a nursery. And I'm like, damn it. That's the perfect setup for an office. And now you're going to have plug an extension, are you not? Yeah, exactly. For all your computer stuff.

Speaker: Now I'm like, where am going to have to find somewhere to put a desk. Yeah. Because I'm just not. Well, you got that little, what about that little nook in your like dining roomy bit in the middle of the chimney? Yeah. Yeah. I was thinking of something like that. Yeah. But then Chrissy was like, but if I'm at home,

Speaker: with like two kids. We're going to be like in and out that kitchen, like trying to have cold work for it. It's just like, yeah. So just trying to figure out where I can sit. I'll just be thrown in some corner basically. It's just because obviously the new kid will not be in that room most, but then I was going to say, oh, he needs a nap. Oh no, it'd be two naps in the beginning or a million naps in the beginning. I've totally forgotten it all. So yeah, being it constantly. i suppose like first six months they'll be in with us so we're like i don't need to worry about that yeah yeah after six months going to his own room and stuff like that and just like and then chris was like oh just think when i go back to work i've got to i've got to find a place for two people to sort of convert a bath application yeah the bath turns into like a desk or a chair and you just work in the bar then then we're like

Speaker: need a garden room to have like an office and then you're like yeah we can't afford to do that so this is what i was talking to my plumber about because he was blown away because he's doing it properly as in like you you can obviously buy it for like three or you know two to three grand like one of those ones from john lewis yeah it comes in but it's just not insulated and stuff or not wired you have to do all that but It's way cheaper, but the ones my brother does, even, he's like, I've done everything myself so far, than, like, all the, like, literally, obviously, the whole thing, the foundations, building, the like, the framework, yeah um and now he's buying, like, the inner insulation, the vapor wrap, and he's, like, talked to me about the roof. He's like, oh, I can see how I'm going to be 10 grand at least just doing everything myself. I said, oh, yeah, my brother's, like,

Speaker: the the thing the cheapest they do is like low 20s and it'll be something quite small. yeah just like The materials are just mad. absolutely mad um yeah but they're not They're doing really well but they're not like billionaires walking around. like they just They cost a lot and you just can just make a good amount from it but not like crazy. And then you're like, I kind of see why people get these like three to four grand wooden structures that just go in the garden. Yeah. I think you just need to insulate it in some way though. Yeah. don't know what the best method is of just doing it of like post like that, but it's in the winter. It's so cold because you get these electric heaters. Yeah. They don't keep in the heat at all. No. Yeah. As soon as you turn it off. Yeah. And it probably costs a fortune. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Well, without had a touch because there's a...

Speaker: I call him my neighbor, but he lives like three doors down. a really nice bloke. I always like stop and talk to him. He's like quite handy as well. And he messaged me the other day. He was like, oh, you're right, Dan? How are you doing? like Sort of checking in. the he was like, I've got like five rolls of like loft insulation left over from a job. He was like, you can have them like for £10 each. And I was like,

Speaker: Yes, 100%. I bet Chrissy's buzzing about that. Yeah, yeah. Well, that's the thing. I was like, I'd say to Chrissy, I was like, we're going to spend 50 quid in rolls of insulation, which you won't see because it's just going in and off. But it should help insulate because we've only got A, probably it's 100 mil.

Speaker: B, it's the original stuff as well. So it's nearly 100 years old. Yeah. And then was like, and then he was like So I was like, oh, did you insulate your loft? was like, yeah, all done now. like And then he was like, oh, I boarded all as well. I like, amazing.

Speaker: And then he was like, so are you planning to remove the old stuff? I was like, no, I'm just going straight over the top. Yeah, 100%. You'll be boiling again in the summer. of but Yeah, yeah, exactly. be the warm of the winter. Yeah, that's the plan, right? So it's getting to that stage of my job now. I was like, I've got...

Speaker: eight bit or seven or eight bits of um skirting left, yeah three meters. And I'm just like, I don't want to put it back in my garage and keep. So yeah um so I said to my brother, do you want it for free? can do a garden room. But most of these garden rooms are so big. And this is... um from like this online company I'm doing a promotion for. So he's like, oh, I need to then order some from them if we need it. So he's like, oh, I need, okay, there's a smaller one we're doing. That's perfect. But again, it's like, oh, i need to store it.

Speaker: And yeah he has at Grand's in the garden, which is funny, a um a double patio sliding doors frame that he bought like four years ago, maybe even more, when he professor started out the gardener business and it was the wrong size or someone cocked up something. don't know whether it was him or brother,

Speaker: or the architect, or whatever, the window guy, someone mucks something up. So he's never paid the window guy. The window guy always mentions it. It's like, oh, it's £1,200. I've still got the glass. um But, you know, if he if he wants them, i'm gonna have to get the money. um And it goes back and forth. That's now in Gran's garden and without the glass, and we can't get it out anymore because the hat extension is built.

Speaker: Oh, God, yeah. We're going to go over the neighbours' garden. They've got side access. yeah I haven't asked them yet. No. So if you're listening, can I please? Can I please, yeah. It's really light. i like Two of us will be able to do it, all of three of us. Maybe your plumber might want it for his garden room. It's just such a weird size. It's just so tall.
