This week on the UKRunChat podcast, Michelle is joined by Naomi Atkin, Lorna Green, Emma Backhouse and Steph Smith from Lingen Davies, who are all getting ready for the Shrewsbury Half or Metric Half this September. Lingen Davies is a Shrewsbury based cancer charity and the headline charity partner for this year's Shrewsbury 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Metric Half.  We chat about how the charity's partnership with the events came about, why running and fundraising work so well together, and how taking on a challenge for a cause can provide an extra bit of motivation. Naomi, who is CEO of Lingen Davies, is preparing for two half marathons in September, the Great North Run and Shrewsbury Half, having returned to running after an eight year break. Steph and Lorna shares how joining the Shropshire Shufflers helped them build towards the 10K, while Emma talks about the appeal of the Metric Half. There's also plenty of chat about the realities of training during a hot summer, and the motivation of a post-run brunch! Plus, Naomi shares some practical fundraising advice, including why doing something you genuinely enjoy can be one of the best ways to raise money. In this episode: * How four Lingen Davies colleagues got into running * Why running can be such a powerful fundraising tool * Naomi's advice for making fundraising more creative * The importance of starting fundraising early * Returning to running after a long break * The motivation of running as part of a team Find out more about Lingen Davies: https://www.lingendavies.co.uk/

ukrunchat: Hello, welcome back to the UK Run Chat podcast. Now today things are a little bit different because I've not got one guest joining me but four.

ukrunchat: So I'm chatting to Naomi, Lorna, Emma and Steph from Lingham Davis, who are all getting ready to either run the Shrewsbury Half Marathon this September or have just taken part in the Shrewsbury 10K, which was in July. Now, Lingham Davis are the headline charity partner on both the Shrewsbury 5 and 10K in July and the Half and Metric Half in September. And they're a Shrewsbury -based charity supporting cancer patients across the area. And they've recently been involved in some fantastic... stick fundraising for the 10k event and we're going to find a add a bit more about the charity and how training for the Shrewsbury half is going. So welcome everybody. and Let's start by just getting to know you all. So I'm going to go round as I've got four of you here today. So and tell me who you are, what you do at Linden Davis and perhaps most importantly how you would describe yourself as a runner and what you're training for at the moment. So, Naomi, should we start with you?

Naomi Atkin: We can do yeah. and So I'm Naomi Atkin. I'm the Chief Executive Officer at Lingen Davis. I am currently training for two half marathons in September so I'm doing Great North Run on the 13th and then Shrewsbury Half on the 27th um In terms of describing myself as a runner, I'm not quite sure what to say to that. I used to run a lot. I...

Naomi Atkin: Used to run a lot of half marathons. Certainly I've done two marathons. and I then had two children who are now three and six. So I took quite a long break from running. So this will be the first time I've run for more than about an hour in eight years.

Naomi Atkin: So.

ukrunchat: Oh wow.

Naomi Atkin: quite the gap but i'm really looking i'm enjoying training again and getting back into it

ukrunchat: Yeah. So you've taken on a big, big challenge for yourself this year then. So why two half marathons?

Naomi Atkin: Yeah. um Well, I did the metric half in Sheesbury last year. I really enjoyed that. and have had a place at Shrewsbury for quite a long time. And then we had a Great North Run place, a Lingen Davis place left over and Steph talked me into it essentially. So I'm now doing that as well. and I did the Great North Run 10 years ago.

Naomi Atkin: um So it'll be really nice to be back. And it was the first event I actually did for the charity when I started here in post as a fundraiser. So it's quite nice to be getting back into it and doing the. the same event again and it's ah it's a great day out.

Naomi Atkin: Same.

ukrunchat: Oh, yeah, yeah.

Naomi Atkin: Okay. I would say.

ukrunchat: i will we We'll come back a bit to training later, but let let's go around a little bit.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: So, Steph, tell us a little bit about you.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah, so I am Head of Philanthropy in the fundraising team here at Lingen Davis. And I took part in Truth Be 10K on the 5th of July. um Partly that's because Si and Jo, the organisers, kindly gifted us some charity places and in recruiting a load of our supporters to take part.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I thought I better take one for the team and and do it myself as well. It also happened to be over my birthday weekend. So I thought it was a nice way to to celebrate and maybe get some sponsorship in. and If you'd normally buy me a drink, then sponsor me for this run instead. And yeah, it was a great, great day. Really enjoyed it. Wonderful support from... um the local crowd and um Yeah, we're just really pleased to be charity partner and so we wanted to represent on the day as well.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: uh but in terms of my running journey i actually joined a local running group called shufflers and they were doing a beginners to 10k uh course which started in march and finished at the end of july so that was quite nicely timed with the actual event at the start of July and that really helped me weekly to kind of build up.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: ah my my miles and then feel ready and prepared for the event. at the start.

ukrunchat: Yeah. Yeah, but that's perfect timing, isn't it, for the 10K event? so You enjoyed it with it being on your birthday as well.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I did. Yeah, it was great. I had some. Some relatives come with signs saying ghost death, which I wasn't expecting. So that gave me a little boost halfway round as well, which is really sweet.

ukrunchat: Oh, that's lovely. And hopefully there was some birthday cake at the finish.

ukrunchat: Lorna, tell us a little bit about you and your running and what you do at Lingen Davis.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Hello, and so I'm the office manager here at Lingen Davis and like Steph, I'm a member of the Shrewsbury Shufflers, Shropshire Shufflers. Shropshire Shufflers, where again, last year I did the same programme, 0 to 10k.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: and then have been running regularly. every Monday and every Wednesday. um and signed up for the we did shift not 10k as a fundraiser and then some high got talked into doing. the metric half, not quite there to do a full half yet.

ukrunchat: Yeah, it's quite a big jump actually, isn't it, to half marathon from 10k. So the metric is kind of a nice, it's a nice in -betweener.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: different

ukrunchat: Yeah. what What about you, Emma?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: um yeah so i'm the chief operating officer at lincoln davis and In terms of my running... I don't know if you can call me a runner. I think I'm more of a plodder. but it's fine i just i move faster than a walk and i get round um so i've been so probably since about 2013, 2014 doing 5Ks working up to 10Ks.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: one or two a year. um and then last year for the first time did the metric half which was the furthest distance i'd ever run and or plotted. And I really enjoyed it. I was really worried about doing Shrewsbury because I've heard rumours that it's, well, obviously it's really hilly and I was quite scared, but...

Steph, Lorna + Emma: you know My normal running route is around the quarry and it's quite flat by the river. um but it was great and i really really loved it i really enjoyed that sort of extra 3k um on the 10k distance so uh yeah so i got talked into into doing it again

ukrunchat: Yeah, we we we often hear about the hill in um the Shrewsbury 10k. It's not an event that I've actually run personally. um I am hoping to get over and do it at some point. and But yeah, tell us a little bit about the route then.

ukrunchat: So it it is quite a challenging course, isn't it?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah, so when you think, so the metric half I can talk to, right I think the the actual full half, I don't think I could do that.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: But the metric half, it was actually really nice, starting in the West Medshire ground and then running um to Coton Hill. and by that point i think we've done about two and a half k 3k already so mentally it was a really good thing um and then running around Smithfield Road and london along and through the quarry.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: and it's really nice because of the route it takes it means that there's lots of people that can get out on the course and support you all the way around so there's just lots of cheering i think the The scariest bit was Kingsland.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Um, and sort of running up and down the hills there and there was a short section where i was just like Gosh, what have I decided to do? But after that, it was fine. And once you come down Port Hill and the adrenaline kicks in.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: there's only sort of two or three more k to do after that so

ukrunchat: yeah

Steph, Lorna + Emma: It was fine. I think the sort of the worst bit was coming back onto the Westman Showground again and you can sort of see the finish and then you have to go round in a loop. This is flying and white metal.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: but yeah no it's great really enjoyed it it's a really nice route to run actually

ukrunchat: Yeah. Oh, good. and So how did you get involved with with the two events then? Tell us a little bit about Lincoln Davis and, you know, why you you're sponsoring running events.

Naomi Atkin: Steph, do you want to talk to this? This was your link, wasn't it?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: yeah yeah So ah we had seen that ah the 10K and Metric half and half marathon were being promoted. It was just before Christmas, actually. um And they're well known for supporting local charities in the area by gifting free places. So I reached out to the organizers.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: in December um looking ahead to January and just said you know we'd be really keen to to kind of apply for some of those charity places and asked how it worked. And when I heard back from Si in January, he said, yeah we'll give you 10 places but we'd also love you to be charity partner um this year we've got

Steph, Lorna + Emma: a big appeal locally called the Sunflower Appeal. We're trying to raise £5 million pounds by 2029 to provide a dedicated Lingen Davis Cancer Centre at Prince Edward Hospital in Telford and that's alongside the existing services in Shrewsbury but that will double the capacity of chemotherapy treatment across our region. So it's a huge development in cancer care um and I think they were really keen to to get behind that.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: and back it so yeah it was great to have their support and it's really good you know awareness and profile building for us as a charity as well

ukrunchat: Yeah, so how many of those places did did staff take up? Because i'm I'm assuming you were trying to fill them with... um with other people fundraising, but it seems like quite a lot of you are enjoying running and fundraising as well.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Well, it's actually separate. So I took one of the places for Shoes for 10K and I took that a week before the event because we had one left unfilled. So I was waiting until the last minute. um and yeah kind of filled that one but um Emma, Lorna and Naomi have actually purchased their places separate.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: They're not part of our charity places, they're on top of that.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Oh lovely, yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: um They got the running bug and just signed up for a load of local events.

ukrunchat: Yeah, you you don't want to miss out, do you either? You want to be part of it because it's it's an it's a nice thing, isn't it? Fundraising as well, when you when you know you're running for a for a cause that you believe in.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: yeah I definitely think it gives people that extra motivation and commitment um I know one of the runners who's taken our half marathon place this year she actually signed up last year and she's got two young children and for whatever reason the kind of training fell off. um So she's taken one of our charity places this year because it's a cause close to her heart, but she also thinks she's committed then. She's doing it for the charity and she knows that's the motivation she needs to kind of get there.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: at the start line on the day.

ukrunchat: Yeah, I mean, I guess running and fundraising go quite well together, don't they? because i think they the fundraising helps motivate you and get you out the door.

Naomi Atkin: Definitely. Yeah, I think this i've done I've been in my post for 10 years and I've done several events myself over the years. and I did the London Marathon. to eight years ago for lingon davis the fundraising was actually a lot harder than the training i found um because you've got to be that bit more creative you know anyone can force themselves out the door for a run but actually doing the fundraising on top it is really tough but it does

ukrunchat: Young.

Naomi Atkin: keep you going and it makes you definitely want to turn up on the day and you know once all those people have committed that support to you you you're going to do what you can do to get to get to the end.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: So it certainly adds another element of it, yeah.

ukrunchat: yeah so so do you kind of set a minimum kind of requirement for fundraising when you're gifting places like this for a run

Steph, Lorna + Emma: We do, yeah. So for the local runs, and I think it depends on the distance as well. and For example, for the 10k, it was £50 minimum sponsorship. What you tend to find is that people go above and beyond that.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: So collectively our runners this year raised about £1 ,900. Free sponsorship. which was amazing. um And for the half... a metric half i think our target is a minimum of 100 pounds um but for the kind of more national ones where places are hard to come by like london marathon obviously the target is much higher

ukrunchat: Yeah. Yeah, and... and ah the So the people who took on the the places for Shrewsbury 10K, were they... ah Were they all kind of runners already or was some of them brand new to it?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I think it's a mixture. um We had a few people that have an affinity with the cause um so there may be people who have friends or relatives currently receiving treatment at the Cancer Centre here.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: um so they're obviously motivated to to give something back. um We did have some that are seasoned runners, some that have done marathons and things in the past. One of our trustees actually is doing, is he doing 10Ks this year?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: um So that was one of his 10 Ks. um Yeah, a real kind of mixture. um But also people like me, I guess, that we're building up to it. I've done one 10K before in 2020, but I'm not. a regular season runner so for me this was kind of a goal that I was trying to work towards as well.

ukrunchat: Yeah, yeah. Okay. um So so just just tell us a little bit about, so you raised nearly £2 ,000 from the 10K, didn't you? That's brilliant.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: We did, yeah, and on top of that, we very kindly got £1 donation per entry from the organisers as well.

ukrunchat: Thank you.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Say that. took us over 3000.

ukrunchat: Yeah, that that that's fantastic, actually. ah So, Naomi, you mentioned that you you do have to be a bit inventive sometimes with fundraising. Have you got any tips for people who...

ukrunchat: who might be raising money for charity at the moment.

Naomi Atkin: Oof. Well... Um... I think the thing that we find really works as a charity is that... Things really work when people do do something they enjoy and they do something that's personal to them so When I was fundraising...

Naomi Atkin: for the For London, I did things like i I took over the local pub quiz in my local pub. and they just let me run it for the night and took the ticket money for example. um And I did that, I think I did that twice. i i rate We had to raise about 2000 pounds each.

Naomi Atkin: And I think. Two of those probably did maybe 25, 30 % of my fundraising straight off the bat. um And it's going to something where you know people are interested in it. You actually are going to enjoy yourself, putting yourself into some sort of weird situation that you would never normally be in.

Naomi Atkin: doesn't tend to work for people but The classics also work, you know, bake sales are very, very effective if you're selling to your friends and family. um And also the really...

Naomi Atkin: basic stuff of just really letting people know that well that's what you're doing you know we're all very connected online these days we're not walking around with paper sponsor forms usually although some people still do but you know if you're on LinkedIn you're on and Instagram, Facebook, whatever, putting it out there. this the people who were most generous can be quite surprising.

Naomi Atkin: I had some people... very contacts on social media sponsoring me for London who I hadn't spoken to in years and actually people can be really kind if you just ask

ukrunchat: yeah

Naomi Atkin: um but i would also say to plan it in so if people think they can raise a couple of thousand pounds in the last month before their marathon they definitely can't unless they've got a very, very big idea. and It does take time.

Naomi Atkin: and some people will wait to to see that you've actually done the run before they'll give you the money. So we find some people we get quite a chunk after the fact.

ukrunchat: Oh.

Naomi Atkin: some people will be like right i'll do it but like when' i want to see you finish um So sometimes it comes in a bit late.

ukrunchat: Yeah. oh that Well, that's motivation, isn't it?

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: To get the run done.

Naomi Atkin: Absolutely.

ukrunchat: Yes. Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Because I think it it can feel daunting, I think, like when you've got... like like an expensive charity place like like something like London, you know, they ask you to raise an awful lot of money, don't they?

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: And it can feel, I think, you don't want to just be asking people to donate. You need to be a bit more creative, don't you?

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: um Yeah, because I know someone, she was she was running um like charity events and pamper nights and all sorts of things to raise funds. So it's just, yeah, it's thinking a little bit outside the box sometimes, isn't it?

ukrunchat: Yeah. Okay. so So what other events are you sponsoring as well this year? You mentioned a few at the start, didn't you? You do all the big running events.

Naomi Atkin: yeah we have places don't we in several big running events so obviously the local ones have an additional benefit to us that not only are they a direct fundraisers they're also a great profile raiser

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: So we can get people, we have our own branded running vest. So we see people walking running around the high streets of. Shropshire Telford and Mid Wales in a Lingan Davis vest, that's valuable in itself to us. Um, so we work with a lot of the local events so yes we had charity place this year at chiffonel 10k back in may Then she'sre she's Brie, she's behalf.

Naomi Atkin: them. an event in tibetan in newport in September that we've got a couple of places out so all these little events add up to quite a lot over the course of the year. And then beyond that, Steph and the rest of the fundraising team support runners.

Naomi Atkin: accessing places in much bigger events so we have this year we've got four or five people running London um last year i think we had paris and manchester marathon places so we've got things going on all over the place and then of course you get people who just have a place in a marathon anyway who then choose to fundraise you know just because that's what they want to do and We had a family raise it, was it about £12 ,000?

Naomi Atkin: early this year. I think it was Vienna Marathon.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: yeah

Naomi Atkin: which was not a place we we'd got for them but they just really got on board with the cause and and used their ex you know their opportunity to run as an opportunity to do something for a good cause as well which is Fantastic for us.

ukrunchat: Yeah, but that's the dream, I guess. People have already got a place and just kind of fundraising for you because they're they're connected in some way.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: um Yeah, yeah, that's brilliant. and So let's let's chat a little bit about how training's going then for September. so but um Who wants to start?

Naomi Atkin: um

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Are you gonna do seven? i yeah I built up to the shift for 10K in May and then... After that, like holidays and you know festivals and weekends away and all of that is kind of getting, and it's been really hot.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: really really hot for running

ukrunchat: It has. hmm

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Those are all my excuses. Um... But I am getting back into it now, ready for ready for September. and do it get a few k's under my belt before ah before the metric half.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Thank you.

ukrunchat: Yeah, because ah there's not long to go, is there really? What we are we on now? We're recording middle of August, so there's what? six Six weeks of training.

Naomi Atkin: Thanks very much.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah, I'm supposed to be running 13k this afternoon but it's something like... 29 degrees outside so it's not feeling very tempting at this point. It might be a very early tomorrow morning job instead I think.

ukrunchat: Yeah, I think early mornings and and later nights are our friend at the moment as runners, aren't they?

Naomi Atkin: Okay. m Late nights. Absolutely.

ukrunchat: it's it's been It has been a tough summer if you're training for autumn events, actually.

Naomi Atkin: Peace.

ukrunchat: It's really hard to to know. went to do your running what you know what's for the best and how to hydrate and

Naomi Atkin: Yeah. We've just got to hope it cools down by September. I don't really fancy running two half marathons in 30 degrees. Doesn't sound very pleasant.

ukrunchat: oh no no definitely not because the great north runs first isn't it that's kind of early

Naomi Atkin: Yeah. And the last time I did that, it was really hot.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: it was pretty toasty on the day so I'm hoping for not that again I'd rather run it in the rain

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah.

ukrunchat: oh

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Yes.

Naomi Atkin: But we've been getting out, haven't we?

ukrunchat: And.

Naomi Atkin: Everyone's doing a bit of training, I think.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah. um

Naomi Atkin: Lorna's trying to.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Okay.

ukrunchat: Yeah, well, still six weeks left.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: regular i regularly run but i'm I need to get the distance in. i've done 11k is the furthest that I've run.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I see there's like Emma suggested last two people in the crowd get behind you and then you can just get continue off.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: yeah to the finish line. um But yeah I do run. Mondays and Wednesdays. What did I just say? I've got an injury though.

ukrunchat: Oh dear.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: which I'm sure will be fine.

Naomi Atkin: You'll be fine

Steph, Lorna + Emma: i'll I'll walk if I have to. It'll be fine. you won't have to you'll be good you'll be all right and that's the thing because we're all running um the three of us are running the same race i know they're doing the sort of the half but the sort of the roots overlap a little bit

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I'm hoping at some point I might just see your faces as we're going around and share each other.

Naomi Atkin: you see

Steph, Lorna + Emma: off Yeah. And you guys.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: will have finished miles ahead of me and you can cheer me over the finish line. That'd be great. But that's another motivator as well, isn't it? Done. training. is because we we know that other members of the team are doing it.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: that's a motivator as well it's like well i don't really want to be embarrassed when i get there and you know it's taken me four hours to get around the you know the course and these guys have already gone off and had their brunch and been celebrating so We'll wait for you.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: It's not a fact.

Naomi Atkin: The celebratory brunch is quite motivating though, isn't it at the end?

ukrunchat: You too.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah. and you know the fact that we were sort of like jointly fundraising and you know all of that motivates that training

ukrunchat: anne

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: It's nice to do it all together, isn't it?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: Bye.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Nice to meet you.

Naomi Atkin: And the fundraising's been easier because we've had a single Just Giving page for all of us. And that, I think... feels better i don't i don't know that it brings more money in but it's nicer to do it as a team and sort of You feel like you're getting in somewhere with it a bit a bit quicker, I think, as well.

ukrunchat: Yeah, and you don't you don't feel as on your own, do you?

Naomi Atkin: No.

ukrunchat: it's you know It can be quite a lonely, tough thing, fundraising sometimes, I think. So it's nice that you're all you're all in it together.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Yeah. So what distance are you doing the metric half open to get up to before the day?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: i would ah I would have run 13K before the day.

ukrunchat: Yeah. Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: yeah I will not have run 13k before the day um but I would mean because I've done 10k's I've done quite a few I'm quite confident running the 10k distance so If I can get to like 10, 11k beforehand.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: then I'm quite happy. My body isn't. Last year, my body hit that point at 10k where it goes, we're going for done now, aren't we? Because that's the sort of the regular distance that was like, oh no, oh no, another three. But yeah, as long as I can get to sort of 10, 11k before the... yeah before September. That'll be fine.

ukrunchat: Yeah, you'll be absolutely fine.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Lots of people on the course that we'll recognise and know that we're cheering us on. Like I say, it's a motivator isn't it, to get to the end.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Yeah, absolutely. And what about you, Naomi? Are you chasing PBs in either of your races? or

Naomi Atkin: No. Um, I think I'd like to beat my last... Great North time, ideally. But as I say, it was 10 years ago and I've had two children in the interim. so Whether that happens or not I don't know.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: but um No, I think it's the first time I've run anywhere near the distance. in a long time and actually getting round. would be great i did the metric half last year as i said and i really really enjoyed it and found it Not easy by any stretch, but certainly. you know I didn't come to the end and feel like I was going to fall over so that sort of thought made me think actually perhaps I can push myself a little bit further and get back into a half because

Naomi Atkin: ah A long time ago, a half marathon was my favourite distance. um So I think hopefully. hopefully i don't hate the first one so much that i don't do the second one but um i'll be I'll come to the second one for the social, if nothing else.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I can't wait to get out of this. together. Congrats.

ukrunchat: You've got the brunch to look forward to, remember.

Naomi Atkin: I have, yeah, yeah, we need to book that, yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: council pardon It's all about them.

Naomi Atkin: Absolutely.

ukrunchat: So who who would who would you say? We'll be home first then on the metric half.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: No, you ain't me.

ukrunchat: I... And are you competitive?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: i would

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Patrick, you're definitely going to be home first. Yeah. name is in half yeah What's the timer? I have no idea. I haven't got a time in mind. No, not Clare.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: See last year I said knowing how fast I run a 10k I said I wanted to be in under the two hours and ideally... around the 1 .45 and that was ambitious for me and I got in around 1 .46 so I'm hoping as long as the weather is kind and I actually get a few more k's in.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: that that you know if I could do that, that would be great. My other half actually missed me coming over the finish line last time because he didn't believe I could get there around the 1 .45 and turned up just before the two -hour point.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: i'm gonna try i'm gonna try and prove him wrong again and get it over the get it around the 145 I think.

ukrunchat: Yeah, that that's brilliant. Yeah, well done. Yeah, so I've got i've got a little um quick fire round for you all, if that's okay. Nothing too scary, but...

Naomi Atkin: good

ukrunchat: Um.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: that

ukrunchat: So do you prefer running on roads or off -road?

Naomi Atkin: Right.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Road. road road

ukrunchat: Oh, you're all road.

Naomi Atkin: All right.

ukrunchat: No trailies amongst you. I can't run on road anymore.

Naomi Atkin: ha

ukrunchat: I find it a bit i find it a bit boring, if I'm quite honest. ah Morning or evening runs.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Easily.

Naomi Atkin: Probably morning.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Morning. morning

Naomi Atkin: Get it done

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Good luck.

ukrunchat: Yeah, get it get it out of the way. And while it's hot as well, I guess mornings are a little bit better, aren't they?

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Do you prefer music on your runs or silence?

Naomi Atkin: Music.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Silence. I've never run with headphones. Music for me. Oh yeah, music.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah. I've started listening to podcasts so I'm like, right, I've got to run until this guy's finished telling me whatever he's telling me about. It's not quite as motivating as music, but it does keep my mind occupied.

ukrunchat: Yeah, no, that's interesting. i guess I guess the music you've got the beat to run to, haven't you?

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: What's on your music playlist then for those who like music? What's your favourite running track?

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Oh gosh. Dua Lipa is a good one actually. If you put a Dua Lipa album on...

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: quite The pace of that is quite good.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I usually should just...

Naomi Atkin: I listen to the playlist for my 40th birthday party sometimes.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: And it's both as wise.

Naomi Atkin: It's got loads of dancing tunes on it, it's great.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Oh, yeah. Something upbeat but not too fast. Because I grew up...

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: rhythm and sometimes i have been native search for a running playlist but trying to figure out the beats per minute for my pace

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: It's too bad. I will just go off too quickly. You want to go on like a techno thing.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah. Nice.

ukrunchat: OK, next one. Favourite running snack once you get home?

Naomi Atkin: I can't eat and run at all.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: It's that.

ukrunchat: Oh, can't you?

Naomi Atkin: No. I have to wait for quite a long time after I've eaten or it makes me sick.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Naomi Atkin: Yeah.

ukrunchat: Oh, okay.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Um... I think during is jelly babies, but that's not.

ukrunchat: Okay.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: I can't do jeering. No, no.

Naomi Atkin: No.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Dark stories.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: After is probably a nice brunch, there you go.

ukrunchat: Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: in the morning so like a nice bagel avocado poached egg bacon eggs benedict yeah

Naomi Atkin: Oh yeah all that stuff but I've got to wait like at least half an hour to an hour after I've been running.

ukrunchat: OK, one final one then. One word to describe how you're feeling about the upcoming Shrewsbury half or metric half.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Excited!

Naomi Atkin: Yeah, motivated. Yeah.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: um

Steph, Lorna + Emma: Nervous. Yeah, dude.

ukrunchat: Aww.

Steph, Lorna + Emma: This could be one as well. Nervous.

ukrunchat: I'm sure you'll all be absolutely fine.

Naomi Atkin: Fingers crossed.

ukrunchat: Yeah. But yeah, thank you so much. So there we go. We've got four runners and one charity and and the Shrewsbury Half and Metric Half Marathon and hopefully a few more donations and fundraising along the way. So thank you so much to Naomi, Lorna, Emma and Steph for joining me. and Where can people find out more about Lingen Davis if they want to fundraise, if they've already got a place in a run and would like to do some fundraising for you?

Naomi Atkin: We're on all socials at Lingan Davis or they can go to lingandavis .co .uk which is our website and all our contact details are there.

ukrunchat: Yeah, and obviously look out for some Lingen Davis vests as well and at the upcoming Shrewsbury Half and Metric Half.

Naomi Atkin: Absolutely.

ukrunchat: i I did see on your socials, actually, you've got little dog bandanas, haven't you, for those little...

Naomi Atkin: oh they're the best

ukrunchat: um Oh, they're so cute.

Naomi Atkin: So, thanks.

ukrunchat: So hopefully... Yeah.
