Simple Steps: Setting Limits

Let’s be blunt: That phone in your pocket (or more likely your hand) seems like it’s the key to an ever quickening and expanding world. And in some ways, that can be true. But it’s also the key to easy distraction, erratic focus, and the cheapening of your valuable time.

This week, we’re talking about setting limits and boundaries on your technology, and more specifically social media, to protect your best asset: you.

Is this something you’ve struggled with? Or perhaps, overcome? We’d love to hear from you. Send us an email at podcast@uncommonwealth.com or leave us a comment on our socials (yes, the irony is noted).

Hello and welcome everybody to the Uncommon Wealth Podcast. I'm your host, Philip Ramsey. And I'm Aaron Kramer. Thanks for tuning in. We have a simple step for you. What that means is it's shorter than five minutes, which is super exciting and super hard for both Aaron and I, but we're going to do our best. We're talkers. Here's

Overcoming Personal Obstacles

the deal. At the end of the day, we believe at Uncommon Wealth Partners that you are your best asset. So if you are your best asset, who is your biggest opposition? Aaron, who would you say?
00:00:52
Speaker
Myself. Yes. You are your biggest asset, but I also think that we get in our way, um, mostly of ourselves. So today Aaron came across something that I feel like is going to help you get out of your own way and help you become your best asset. Aaron Kramer, what is that? And it sounds funny when you first hear it, but I do think it helps with you and your like personal development and growth because one of the biggest things that we have a problem with is what Aaron Kramer
00:01:20
Speaker
Social media. Yes. The things in your pocket, your freaking phone. Sorry about it. But like, let's just talk about it. So social media is a big thing that deters me, at least from showing up in the places where I know I need to show up, maybe putting a little bit more effort in areas. But sometimes I get caught scrolling on my phone and stuff like that. So we needed to address it in this simple step. Aaron Kramer, what is our advice to our listeners for the simple step that they can take action to now and help them?
00:01:50

their best asset. Give it to us.

Managing Social Media Distractions

00:01:52
Speaker
Yes. So if you are like me, go to your phone, go to settings, and then you're going to scroll down and you're going to screen and go to screen time. It will tell you how much time you are on social media and just scrolling.
00:02:06
Speaker
I'm not going to say mine on air because it's embarrassing. But what you can do is you can set time limits to where it shuts off and you can't open it back up. Yes. So what we're suggesting is to put a time limit on your social media apps for yourself. Here's what's interesting. And I know they do this and I hope they do this for everybody. They haven't pegged me on this, but they give me my social media or my screen time every Sunday while I'm at church normally. And it's super convicting.
00:02:35
Speaker
And every time I get that notification, I'm like, Oh man, like I hope it's better than last week. Oh, it's worse. So this is a really good idea. It's a simple step, of course, but our hopes in talking about this as well as putting some boundaries in place, we'll be able to keep the main thing. The main thing, if you know what I mean.
00:02:53
Speaker
and keep relationships in front of us to keep the things that we need to go moving forward and still become our best asset, help us and help myself get social media out of it and help my screen time go down. Because to me, it's something that really deters myself. And it's something that's like a slow burn, if you will. But I think it's a really good thing. And so Aaron, great job thinking of this. And one might think, hey, this really isn't dealing with my finances.
00:03:23
Speaker
Kind of and kind of not. I think it really does because it deters us from thinking about things that are more important. We just get caught in the endless scrolling. So put your timer on this, whatever you deem is necessary. And then, Aaron, you've implemented this. Tell me how it's gone for you. It has been gone really well. It actually has been kind of difficult and full disclosure. When you go to click on it, you can say ignore
00:03:49
Speaker
or whatever, or you want an extra 15 minutes on there. But the fact that it can actually kick you off has been so much better. Now I'm finding that I'll leave my phone upstairs. I'll go downstairs. I don't need my phone because I don't need to be on it. So it's actually like I spent more time with my daughter. I read more. Right.

Connecting Distraction Management to Financial Focus

00:04:10
Speaker
So when we talk about how to help you with your finances,
00:04:14
Speaker
Just think about how much time a day you are distracted on your phone that you could be doing something else that's more intentional with your time than just scrolling through stupid social media.
00:04:25
Speaker
You know? Yes. Yes. Toxifying your brain. I say that my brain gets very toxified by social media. Yeah. Uh, this is a great simple step. Here's another one for a bonus simple step. And then we've got to wrap this up. I also have turned off my notifications for all my social media. And one of those people that hate when there's like a red little ding, ding, you know, a little alert, I always click on it just to turn off.
00:04:50
Speaker
I was finding that I was turning, I was clicking on it and I would spend like five minutes just zipping through quick. Stop. So I turned off all the alerts for my social media. It has been a game changer. So I'm going to add and implement this screen time, some social media kind of timer, uh, per Aaron's kind of thought. And I hope that that also helps me kind of limit all this stuff because at the end of the day, we're addicted kind of people. We're kind of created to be addicted to things. So,
00:05:16
Speaker
I hope this helps.
