11 Plays1 year ago

This week we are joined by another Doctor of Physical Therapy Danny Rodriguez. But instead of discussing the grind of doctoring, we discuss the game of golf, what it is like growing up with Cuban parents, and some classic boys hiking trips. Along the way, we learn some crazy history about one of America's favorite snacks before drafting our favorite potato chips. This is one you don't want to miss.

00:00:46
Speaker
Hey, the sun is shining here in Ohio, which is a rarity. So we're going to take a win for the day. All right, Danny, why don't you tell the people a little bit about

Family Background & Ohio Move

00:00:54
Speaker
yourself? Where'd you grow up? What kind of things did you like to do as a kid? And what are you up to now? So I grew up in Dayton, Ohio. I'm actually first generation of my family, not born in Cuba. Got an older sister. She was born here too, but my parents, my grandparents, they're all born in Cuba, raised there, raised a little bit in Puerto Rico.
00:01:12
Speaker
After college, they came here. Now here I am, so I grew up playing. I'm a big sports guy. I grew up playing all the sports, basketball, baseball, soccer, football. Now I am a physical therapist, just like Dr. Matt Martin. Look at that, things have been a little bit of background on me.
00:01:27
Speaker
So for your family coming over from Cuba, how did they end up settling in Ohio? So my parents were geniuses. They're both engineers. So they got an engineering degree in Puerto Rico. They actually had like pretty good engineering department over there somehow. It's called Kamaway University. And they both have the same two job offers coming out of college, the Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, or the Naval Base
00:01:53
Speaker
in San Diego. And you can probably guess which one they chose. I still don't understand why my dad complains about the cold weather all the time. And I'm like, you did this to yourself. It's weird thinking that two Cuban people picked Dayton, Ohio over San Diego, but here we are. Did they not know about the cold before they picked to come to Ohio or that San Diego is predominantly Hispanic city?
00:02:13
Speaker
I don't get it. Shoot, they probably had no internet in Cuba. They had no idea. You know, these are questions that I still have yet to be answered to this day. But, you know, we'll keep trying. I'll keep digging and when I get an answer, I'll let you know. We will stay tuned on that one. For sports growing up, what did you play in high school?

Sports Passion & Golf Talk

00:02:28
Speaker
What were some of your favorites?
00:02:29
Speaker
I played baseball, basketball, and football. I love soccer, but then I got too big for it, so then I switched to football. Baseball is probably my number one sport, though. That's what I ended up playing in college. But I played at Ohio Northern University, a small little D3 school. So baseball is my sport. Now, golf is like number one.
00:02:45
Speaker
I'll still play like basketball, pick up basketball. If you put me and Marty on a team, we're not losing. He's a sharpshooter, but right now it's all golf. Golf is my man. I've got a tee time today. Like you said, it's sunny outside. So, oh yeah, we're playing today. I couldn't agree with you more. I grew up playing football, basketball, baseball, soccer. In high school, I played football and volleyball and I started playing golf like three years ago. I regret it. Why did I do anything other than play golf?
00:03:07
Speaker
It's so like, it's incredibly frustrating. And I should have known, you know, when I was seven or eight that, you know, I come from a family of short, generally unathletic white people. So I shouldn't have been trying to play football and basketball and all these other sports. I should have just settled on golf from an early age. I'd be so good now. It's crazy. I've been playing for five years and I still suck. But if I was just younger and I played, I would be so, so much happier, I think, in life. So much happier. It would be better. It'd be better times. Do you like watching golf, you big Masters fan?
00:03:35
Speaker
I am. I do like watching golf. The Masters is glorious, obviously. I threw out five bets on who's going to be an outright winner. I think four of them didn't even make the cut, but of course, Scheffler's out there. Scheffler's doing great, so he's going to be like the next Tiger Woods. He's a freak show. He's amazing. He's getting there. He just needs to figure out his putting. His putting has kept him from dozens of wins.
00:03:55
Speaker
He'll make like 50 footers, but then he'll miss like a five foot putt. If he figures that out, he's going to be a freak for a very long time. He's fun to watch. I also like that his swing is completely unconventional and not anything that they teach you in golf. He's just out there swinging his swing and his ball striking and everything is better than everybody else.
00:04:12
Speaker
That's why it's like wild to see so my swing I can't say is like two different now I'm not don't not compare myself to Scheffler, but I still feel like I'm hitting a baseball So I just swing as hard as I can my feet are doing God knows what so I can relate to Scheffler But he can put it where he wants where I put it wherever I don't want but he's fun to watch
00:04:28
Speaker
Oh, I know where my shots are going before I hit them. That's just not good places. I know when I step up to the tee box, it's going about 160 yards to the right. Yeah, so I was like reading something about Scheffler and he like, if you see him, he's always like visualizing where his next shot's gonna. So today, I'm gonna visualize where my shot's gonna be and see if that changes anything. And if it does, I'll come back on the podcast and let you know it worked. If it didn't, I'm sorry, you won't hear from me.
00:04:51
Speaker
It's all about swing thoughts. I'm getting better. My miss now is a pulled left. It used to be a huge slice. Now it's a pull left. So equally as terrible, but I flipped my miss. I'm the same way. I just hit things like shortened left. So like I'm watching like those people, like when they're driving and they have the people lined up on the sides. And I just like the amount of people that I would hit on my drive, it would be pretty sad to see. I'm at four or five, five or six people from ricochets and everything. It's a scary thought, but yeah, that's, that goes to my mind when I'm watching that.
00:05:18
Speaker
Yeah, it's terrifying. Well, this is a good reason for you to come and visit Marty though in a couple months. You can get some tickets to the memorial tournament. You can watch Scheffler live and in person. I'd love for that to happen. I'd love for that to happen. If your brother comes along too. Well, as long as he's not working, we could probably get him coming along. I'll tell you what, Danny, if you can get 50 listeners on your episode, I'll lock in some tickets for you and Marty. They all make it happen. We'll see. We've never gotten to 50. I got two podcasts. The highest listener total is 41. So we'll see if you can be the first. That's impressive.
00:05:46
Speaker
We're doing our best here, you know, we're just trying to make people smile. Of course, of course. Now, how did you and Marty meet? You know, typically we've had other people's wives on and they come in and they give us the dirt on them. Unfortunately, you know, Marty's very picky. As I said on another episode, he's the Excalibur of men just waiting for the right King Arthur to come and pull the sword from the stone for him. Or we'll treat you kind of as Marty's wife and you can give us some dirt on him. So how did you two meet and what kind of light do

Friendship & Backpacking Bonds

00:06:12
Speaker
you see him in?
00:06:12
Speaker
So Marty and I, we met in PT school. We were very similar that him and I were the oldest people in our class. During our undergrad days, let's say we, him and I both, we had a good time. Now we, we did our studies, but I think we focused too much on having a good time. We did not get into PT school right away at all. So we shared that. And then we, like I said, we were the oldest people in our class. So Marty had me beat by one year, but for those who know Marty, he looks like he's 12. I look much, much
00:06:39
Speaker
older than he does. So everyone would think that I'm the oldest in the class, but really it was Marty. We got paired together in class. Then we were like that. So needless to say, Marty and I, we, we hit it off. He was like my, my white brother. We have all the same things in common. We would start, you know, golfing. We would do all that stuff. We're in PT school. Our friendship very much took off during COVID when all of a sudden now we're, we're not going to class. He starts playing. I think war zone comes out, right? We start, we're stuck at home. There's nothing else to do. We start playing the war zone.
00:07:07
Speaker
all the time. So I start playing with Marty and then he also invites a friend of his called the Meek Castle. And so I played with these two people like every day. No idea who Meek Castle was, only knew him by Meek Castle and his voice. Needless to say, I think we became best of friends. We became best of friends.
00:07:23
Speaker
And then, during COVID, nothing else to do, they'd go on backpacking trips. And so Marty and the May Castle convinced me to go on a backpacking trip with them. Very appreciative that the group invited me to do that. Never done anything like that before. I've never seen a mountain before. And so we flew into Jackson Hole in Wyoming. We were going to Yellowstone. And I'm in the mountains with these boys. It was the most magical thing in the world.
00:07:45
Speaker
I'm pretty sure I teared up when I first saw him out. It was crazy. So Marty and the Meat Castle, they got a different perspective on me. And so when you're walking with each other, miles and miles every single day, you become close friends with those people. So I'd say Marty and I, including the Meat Castle, who I've seen in person three times, we're a tight-knit crew.
00:08:02
Speaker
Nice, that's a good story. I wasn't sure when you guys started bonding or if you knew before Dayton, I just knew that you were both in PT school together. Is that the only trip that you've gone on? Have you gone on other backpacking trips? Are you taking the one with them this year? We did that one and that was like the coolest thing I've ever done. And then I went on the next one where we went to Pacific Northwest Olympic National Park. That was just as well life changing.
00:08:23
Speaker
And then they went to Salt, dude. I did not go on that one. And I hate to say it. I have not broken the news to them yet. So if they're watching, I'm very, very sorry. I will not be able to make the trip this year because they picked August where I'm actually going to go out of the country for the first time in August. So I cannot take that many days off.
00:08:39
Speaker
Like I said, Marty knows I haven't told the others, so to those who, if they're listening, count me in for next year. I'm there next year. You're definitely going to be breaking some hearts, but I think they'll be happy to know that you're still going on an adventure. Where are you going to out of the country?

Travel Stories: Paris & Aruba

00:08:53
Speaker
So we're going to Paris in August, and I'm going to hit two bucket list things. One, going out of the country. Two, the Olympics is going on out there. So I'm going to go to the Olympics for like a day, and then we're just going to go all over Paris with the girlfriend's family, check everything out as much as we can.
00:09:06
Speaker
So that'll be a good trip. I'm going out of the country for the second time in a month. Where are you going? We're going to Scotland. That'd be sweet. Yeah, so we're traveling like pretty much the entire country. Where have you been? The only other place that I've been outside the US is we went to Aruba for our honeymoon three years ago. Nice. I bet that was sweet. It was pretty freaking awesome.
00:09:23
Speaker
I highly recommend Aruba to anybody, just stay at an all-inclusive resort right on the beach. Every single day in Aruba, we would wake up, eat breakfast at, I don't know, 7, 7.30. I would walk downstairs, we would sit by the pool bar, and I would read a book for like an hour and a half. And then the pool bar opened at 9 or 10 o'clock. Every single day I was the first person in the pool bar, and I'd walk up, and then I'd sit in the water, and I'd start drinking at like 10 o'clock every day for a week.
00:09:46
Speaker
That sounds like my type of day. Pretty awesome. Then you sit and you drink for like two hours and then at noon, I would go and eat lunch. And then, you know, we would have different excursions planned. So we do like boat tour of the island or like a Jeep tour of the island. And then we go snorkeling here and then we did parasailing one day. And it's all like all right out in front of your hotel. Like you really don't even have to leave. And then I think like the entire island of Aruba is like half the size of Columbus landmass wise. So everything's super close. That sounds wonderful. Good for you.
00:10:14
Speaker
We got a lot of stuff. Chris is actually in Italy right now, so he's doing his first adventure. Really? That's their belated honeymoon. Good for me, guys. So they waited till he just finished his nursing school program? He finished? Oh man, that's gonna make a congratulatory text. He finished right at the end of February or like first week of March and then he passed his bars like a week or two ago. So he's like an official nurse and now him and his wife are traveling to Italy for the next week or 10 days or something like that.
00:10:38
Speaker
I'm very upset that he did not tell me any of this. I'm gonna let him know. Chris is a very private man. You gotta pry stuff out of him. He's not a big sharer. He doesn't like hugs. You know, he looks like a teddy bear, but what's the thing on Instagram that they say, looks like a cinnamon roll, but will kill you? That's Chris. But I can see that. That is, that is a made castle. So if you never, you never have been to Cuba since it's opened up or like to Puerto Rico or anything?
00:10:59
Speaker
I've been to Puerto Rico a bunch because like when my parents moved, they basically spent most of their time in Puerto Rico, like through high school and stuff like that. So my grandparents lived out there for a long time. So we would go visit them out there like every Christmas. So I've probably been to Puerto Rico like 10 times, not Cuba. My parents were both engineers at Right Pat.
00:11:19
Speaker
And they were like, the job was just like, you're not going to go back to camp. It was never really open anyways. But now that my parents are retired, my dad and I were trying to plan something. My dad, he would love to go back and check things out. My mom was like, go to hell. I was like, I wouldn't piss on it if it was on fire. I got two different opinions from my parents about it. I'd love to check it out. I think it'd be sweet.
00:11:38
Speaker
I think it looks pretty interesting. I've seen people that have gone since it opened up and since it was closed off for so long, there's all like classic cars and everything that they've had to keep running for all this time. So I think it's got like a cool vibe. But yeah, I don't know if it's a safe place to travel to yet or really much about it. Crazy. I was just like, it's literally 90 miles from the United States and it's like a thoroughbred country. Whereas Miami right there is like
00:12:00
Speaker
international, beautiful place. Cubica easily. If it didn't get closed off or they came and amped it up, it could be like one of the best destinations in the entire Caribbean, you know, within the next decade if money was pumped into it. Absolutely. But it also is like school and it has like that third world country vibe where it's just classic. So it should like, I hope it like stays that way if I ever go there. Like just... Yeah, it feels like you're walking back in time a bit. No advancement, just living life. So did you grew up eating traditional Cuban food?

Culinary Delights & Cuban Cuisine

00:12:25
Speaker
Pretty much, yeah. So every meal my mom cooks, she's the best cook in the world. It always involved white rice, black beans, some sort of like plantain and then like a meat. So every day it was rice and black beans and plantain and then something else. A lot of my friends would come over and I loved eating at my house where it was just normal to me. It was pretty awesome. What are some of your favorite dishes?
00:12:43
Speaker
Growing up, my number one favorite thing was a dish called Gardena Cumpapa, which is basically just beef and potatoes. It's almost like a stew that you like potatoes, like whole potatoes, beef in there. That's like you cook it for like a long time. So it gets real soft and like a red sauce, port over rice. It's fantastic. I'd say
00:13:00
Speaker
My favorite favorite thing is my mom cooks it only twice a year, once for Thanksgiving and once for Christmas. It's called kongri or it's called moro, which is you take the rice, the white rice and black beans and you cook it together and you cook it like all day so like the rice turns black and then she'll put like bacon, sausage in there, chorizo for sausage, not just regular sausage. That stuff, I mean it's just, it's mind-blowing. It's absolutely mind-blowing stuff.
00:13:26
Speaker
I got to come to your house for Thanksgiving this year, I think. Yeah, it's fantastic. Actually, it's funny as my friends have always come over and like through high school through like all my whole life would come over and it wasn't until it's kind of off topic, but I always think it's funny. It wasn't until like high school and my friends would be like, you know, sometimes I have like a hard time understanding your parents.
00:13:43
Speaker
You're talking about they speak perfect English. And I grew up, you know, listening to my parents speak it. They speak the entire English language. I thought it was like perfect until someone pointed out to me and they actually have like a very strong accent still. But it wasn't until, like I said, I was like a senior in high school that I realized, damn, my parents have a very strong accent. I had no idea.
00:13:59
Speaker
So if you're good to hear, you'll hear. Now I hear it all the time, off topic, but I still can't get over that. I went through like 18 years of my life thinking they spoke perfect English and it's very broken. I think I'll pick it up. I work in construction, so I'm used to talking with a lot of people that speak broken English. Yeah, and you get it. It can be tough, but a lot of them are better than you think. It just takes a while. It takes like a second to pick up what they're saying. You just kind of kind of talk slow.
00:14:20
Speaker
Oh yeah. And I always wonder like how much of them actually know English and just like don't want to like let people know. Oh a lot. For sure some of them. They know a lot more than they let on. Yeah. You tell them to do something and they're like, I don't know. I know. That's the perfect excuse. Start calling people out on that. I might have to. I don't know. We have this little Cuban restaurant here called Pablo Savannah Cafe. So I go there time to time. That's like the only Cuban place that we have but they have a like Maduro's but my favorite thing.
00:14:45
Speaker
Oh, my doodle. Yeah, fried plantains. Those are amazing. Yeah, and Cuban sandwich. I mean, you're not gonna go wrong. Now, I hate getting Cuban sandwiches in Ohio because they put, like, barbecue beef in there, and it's just... Talk about, like, just taking a knife in your back when people put, like, Cuban sandwich or Cuban pizza and it's, like, barbecue. It's, like, what are we doing?
00:15:00
Speaker
Yeah, that's wrong. I actually like to make my own Cuban sandwiches, but I can't make the bread. So I got to go to Pablo's and buy the bread. And then I take my roasted pork and I do a brine. So I brine it in orange juice, ton of garlic, kosher salt, and then I put oranges, lemons in it, and like a little bit of rum. So I brine it anywhere from like 16 to 24 hours. Then I pull it out, dry it all off, and then I put it in like a moho.
00:15:22
Speaker
So I do lime juice, orange, mint leaves, more garlic, and then I do that for two hours. And then I roast and baste it in the mojo until it's done cooking. And then I pull it out and I got my Cuban bread from Pablo Savan Cafe. I usually get like some type of tavern ham or something from the deli with Swiss cheese and mustard. Then I butter it up. Then I got a plancha that I cook them on. I don't put pickles on mine because I hate pickles, but it takes me like 30 hours to make these Cuban sandwiches, but they are maybe the best thing that I make. Matt, I just met you and you just became one of my favorite people of all time.
00:15:53
Speaker
I can't stress how much you just progressed in my book from hearing all that. That might be one of the greatest things I think I've ever heard in my life. From the Cuban people, we truly thank you for you being new. Thank you. I do what I can. I stole the recipe from the movie, Chef.
00:16:08
Speaker
But I don't care. I don't care. That was truly incredible. And if we get 50 listeners and we get tickets to the memorial, I want your Cuban sandwich. All right. I'll make some. I've been looking into, I got to figure out how to make Cuban bread because I have a bread maker. So I think if I can find the right dough recipe, I can get the bread maker to mix and proof it for me. And then I just have to lay it out in like the loaf shape. So that's my plan. I just have to find time to do it.
00:16:31
Speaker
the bread is a crucial part in that and i love that you said balancha too that was that was that was like just icing on the cake right there i do what i can you know cultural appropriation and everything it's what it's all about it was yeah that was incredible but yeah if you haven't seen the movie chef i don't know if it's on netflix right now but it came out in 2014 it's my favorite movie of all time maybe not of all time but it's the best movie in the last 10 years it's about this chef and like
00:16:54
Speaker
LA and he works at like a fancy restaurant, he gets fired, but he's from Miami and he flies back to Miami and buys like a food truck and drives it back across the country. And it's about him making like Cuban sandwiches and a roast Campoyo and all that kind of stuff. And then driving back with like his son. Speaking of movies, you and your friend group, it's the one thing that I had do not share in common with you guys is that you guys in movies, I wasn't, I'm not
00:17:16
Speaker
movie person. I just I don't know why I just I'm not a movie person at all. But like when we will go on those like backpacking trips for hours and hours and hours, they will quote just random movies like back and forth or having conversations like we are right now. But it's a different movie quote from a different movie and it is it's honestly amazing to watch.
00:17:33
Speaker
They could be making shit up. I have no idea because I don't watch movies, but they are just sitting there quoting movies for hours and hours and hours. That's mind-blowing. I thought that was a common thing that everybody did. No, that's a very unique thing, I think, to you guys. Yeah, we all did it. I grew up doing it. My memory used to be a lot better when I was a kid and I could watch a movie one time and pick up 40, 50% of the entire movie.
00:17:55
Speaker
It's true. The only movie I can quote is, I like what? Like 40 Old Virgin. I could quote that one and the other guys. If they quote anything outside of that, I'm lost. That's all I can do. Well, you got to tune in, especially if you're walking around with Fran and he's on the trips, then you really need to know movies. Fran's made it on a lot of the trips and incredible guy. I hope I can go on the trip with him, but he, yes. I actually watched, he made a movie afterwards one time that I think Matt showed me. I watched a bunch of clips of it. He's impressive. Was it Rev? Yeah. Yes.
00:18:22
Speaker
He did rev is the one that he like starred in and then he did another one called the Manhattan Project He's done a couple of like small roles and some TV roles And then he directed a short film wrote and directed a short film called low water pressure. It's like a 15 20 minutes long Maybe I think you can find it on YouTube and he submitted that and I think he won an award at the Toronto Film Festival for it That's awesome. I'll have to look that one up So yeah If he doesn't listen to this next time watch low water pressure and then just bring it up like you didn't know that he directed it Just start throwing it up
00:18:52
Speaker
Yeah, that's a good idea actually.

Potato Chips: Origin & Draft

00:18:55
Speaker
Well, Danny, we've had a lot of good talks about food and you know, you told me that you're a big chip guy and you know, that's going to lead us into everybody's favorite segment, which is afternoon delights place at the table. So are you ready to learn about the history of the potato chips?
00:19:09
Speaker
I'm ready. Ah, potato chips. They're salty, crunchy, and addictive. And you can never eat just one. But where did these delicious treats come from? Possibly England, where they call them crisps? Or maybe the French or the Belgians made a pivot off of their palm frites. But no, that's not it.
00:19:24
Speaker
These babies were created in the good old U.S. of A. See, in 1853, a chef by the name of George Crumb worked at Moon Lakes House. An upscale establishment in Saratoga, New York, visited by many of the country's elite. Crumb at the time was considered one of the best chefs in the country, and he served a classic French-fried potato. But one day, a customer came in and he was disgusted by the dish that came out. He said they were too thick, they were too soggy, they weren't salty enough, so he sent them back.
00:19:51
Speaker
Crumb made a plate, made them thinner, cooked them a little bit longer, more salt, go back out. No, the dish returns once again. So Crumb, in an act of vengeance and as a prank, he cuts the potatoes as thin as he possibly can, and he cooks them until they're crispy and hard, and then he oversalts them, sends the dish back out, thinking, you know, oh, I got that customer, got him good. But to his surprise, the guests loved them, raved about them, and then ordered another helping.
00:20:14
Speaker
Then other patrons, they started asking for what was called the Saratoga Chip. And then seven years later, he opened his own restaurant where he would have a fresh batch of the Saratoga Chips waiting for customers at their table. And you know who this crotchety customer was that was sending the chips back? None other than the richest man in America at the time, the trained tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt.
00:20:35
Speaker
You see, after this, the chips, it began to take off in popularity around the country and then soon around the world. But this story isn't without controversy because the first recipe for a potato chip was actually written about 40 years earlier in a recipe book by Englishman William Kitchener.
00:20:52
Speaker
but he had the recipe listed as potatoes fried in slices or shavings. So it's pretty hotly contested. And then there's another controversy where another chef named Eliza in Saratoga was actually quite famous for her potato frying mastery. And she had her own restaurant where she made fried potatoes about four years earlier in 1849. But no matter who actually made the chip, it is vastly credited with
00:21:17
Speaker
George Crumb popularizing the chip. This remained a staple in only restaurants until 1895 when a man from Ohio named William Tappenden was determined to get these delicious little devils into stores. So he transformed his barn into a potato making factory, started delivering them to stores in barrels via horse-drawn carriages. The method gained popularity and other manufacturers started to pick up the process.
00:21:40
Speaker
Then in 1926, Laura Scudder, a woman from California, began developing a new method for storing chips using wax paper. She created the first bag of chips to be sold in stores and even printed a freshness date on the bags, claiming them as the noisiest chip in the world. But the snack didn't take off.
00:22:00
Speaker
until about a year later in Chicago when former boxer turned chef Leonard Japp had to start amping up production of potato chips to feed the needs of one particular customer, notorious gangster Al Capone. See, Capone wanted to serve chips in all of his illegal brothels, gambling houses, and speakeasies during the prohibition. And if you know anything about Capone, that was basically the entire city of Chicago.
00:22:24
Speaker
So, once things took off across Chicago, they took off across the Midwest and the truth that we know started becoming popular all around the world. Now, in 1961, Lay's potato chips became the first national brand of chips. Until then, everybody had their own local brand and in their first marketing campaign, they
00:22:42
Speaker
got the actor from Wizard of Oz who played the cowardly lion as their spokesperson. And he came up and issued the challenge, bet she can't eat only one. And you know what, they were right. You can't eat just one chip because they're too dang good. Today, Americans consume about 1.85 billion pounds of potato chips annually, which is about 6.6 pounds per person. And the US potato chip market, not counting tortilla chips, cheese puffs, or pretzels is estimated at about 10.5 billion annually.
00:23:09
Speaker
So whether it's plain chips, kettle chips, baked chips, there's a flavor out there for everybody. And it's a snack that you can enjoy with friends, either at the movies, at a bar, during a party, or you know what, just sitting around by yourself listening to a podcast. And that is how we got to the potato chips that we have today. That was amazing. That was amazing. Thank you for that. Is that the first time that you've heard about the potato chip? Did you know that the potato chip was just a vengeful act? I was going to say the fact that it was a prank turned into one of the greatest things in the world. I love that. And I'm glad I enjoy them for that reason.
00:23:39
Speaker
Can you control yourself around chips? Are you like a whole bag, man? The craziest thing to me about that you can't eat one potato chip too is even if the flavor is bad, you end up eating three or four. You have to confirm the awfulness, but you just keep going.
00:24:00
Speaker
So what it is, it's like the taste like exponentially gets more, the more like you eat. So it's like, you can't eat one, you're like, okay, did I like that? And you have to eat another one. Like, that was pretty good. So then you eat another one, like confirm your suspicion. And by then the bag is over. We just had IHOP pancakes, strawberry, blueberry, potato chips from Lay's. And it's the most disgusting chip I've ever had in my life. And there was, I still think I still ate five of them.
00:24:21
Speaker
Yeah, you get to, again, you get to confirm your suspicion. I mean, it does sound kind of gross, but like, you don't, any bad chip, you don't just eat one. It doesn't happen like that. It just doesn't work like that. You know, they did have a Lay's limited time edition Cuban sandwich flavor chip.
00:24:33
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I'm worried. And how the hell does it actually taste like a Cuban sandwich? Because it did. It did. To me, it tasted mostly like pickle, though. And I hate pickles, so I was like, wow, I really wanted to love this. I agree. It was heavy on the pickle, but it did taste like a Cuban sandwich. And it was wild. It was pretty wild. Scientists get in the lab, and they just start throwing one thing on top of another. Keep at it. Please keep at it, science. All right, Danny, that's going to lead us into the meat of this episode. We are going to draft the best potato chips. Are you ready for this?
00:25:02
Speaker
Bring it on. All right. Would you like to go first or second? I'll let you go first. With my first pick, this might be a controversial one, but I'm going to take the Lay's sour cream and onion chip. It is my all-time favorite. It's got that perfect little bit of sour in it, still salty. You can just keep going. It's not over salted, so your mouth never gets dry. And for me, when I was a kid, I was more of a picky eater than I am now, and I didn't like a ton of sour stuff. And I didn't even like to put sour cream on my tacos or burritos or anything like that.
00:25:32
Speaker
And I hated onions, but I always loved sour cream and onion chips. So to me, if you can get a kid that loves the actual tasting components of that chip and get it to be their favorite chip, that's a special moment. And that's why I love Lay's sour cream and onion chips.
00:25:47
Speaker
I'm okay with that. I got a little nervous there if you saw me because my number one pick is Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar Chips Blue Bag. Talk about eating one. Those are for psychopaths. That bag will be done. There's no way you can't just finish that bag. And each one you eat, it still gets more and more tasteful.
00:26:06
Speaker
It doesn't ever stop. So that is talk about for me that the main one that like just keeps going ruffles sour cream and cheddar That is it's a great chip. I like regular chips over ruffles chips except for the cheddar sour cream All right, give me your second favorite chip another one that I can't eat So when I went on those trips the first trip to Yellowstone with the boys back back from the boys Meek Castle Marty Kasuji, they're psychopaths. They'll they'll walk like 30 miles in one day
00:26:31
Speaker
And we're not and we're barely clip bars We're barely one of the best meals I've ever had is when we can we finish those hikes. I'm down like 20 pounds I got two things family-sized bag of ruffle sour cream and cheddar and Family-sized bag of Sun chips garden salsa. That is my number two another one that I like I will finish the entire bag The taste just keeps going for me. You might have just become my wife's favorite person on the podcast. That's her favorite chips fantastic I don't know if I agree with you. I'm not a huge Sun chip fan doesn't hit the spot for me
00:27:00
Speaker
I know that I'm in the minority of that. That's the only sun chip I'll go with. And it turns out I love it. That's fair enough. Now for me, my second pick is another one that it's up there because of what it will actually do to the insides of my body. So I'm allergic to caprisons. So I can't eat anything spicy because I'm allergic to the thing in peppers that make them spicy. And it just will destroy my insides. But that's not going to stop me from eating Miss Vicki's jalapeno potato chips.
00:27:29
Speaker
Really, any jalapeno, okay, give me kettle one, but I like the Miss Vicky's. They just started selling them in stores where you could get the big bag, so I don't have to go to like Subway or a sandwich shop to get them. But any food or the next day, I'm gonna spend four hours in the bathroom. That's a win for me, so I'm taking the jalapeno chip.
00:27:46
Speaker
I can't fault you there. I can't fault you there. Okay. Now my next pick, you know, I'm going to go with the nacho cheese Dorito, which is a tough divide. Do you go nacho cheese or Cool Ranch because they're both amazing and it kind of depends on the day, which one I want to go with and which one I want to eat more. But I think at the end of the day, I'm going nacho cheese just a little bit more than Cool Ranch.
00:28:07
Speaker
I actually like the cool ranch is something that I dislike in the beginning But if I keep continuing and be like, okay, it's not bad nacho cheese fantastic the entire time So is it my turn now? Yep, give me pick number three pick number three is me different one So back to my roots Goya plantain chips Goya is a brand and plantain chips We have this is a staple my house growing up My friends would come over and like just take bags because my dad would buy like 10 bags at a time
00:28:32
Speaker
regular plantain chips. There's tons of like flavored ones out there, but the Goya, just regular plantain chips, was a staple of my childhood growing up. If you try it, you would understand. Are they just like crispy fried bananas? Do they have like, are they salted or anything? Yeah, I mean, they're salted. They're gonna be salted. Just a tiny little Imagine ticket plant chain, thinly sliced. If you go to a restaurant, you get like the long wavy ones. These are just like the circular little chips. Love those. You can get the bag of like the wavy ones too, which I mean, you can't go wrong with that.
00:29:01
Speaker
Actually, I'd probably put those up there with the Goyo ones. Any type of plant tang chip, but not like flavor, just a regular plant tang chip. If I go to Kroger, where do I find this chip? Like what I, is it in with all the other chips or do I got to go to where the Goyo beans are at or? Yeah, I think you gotta go to the Spanish section and go there. I think my dad would actually used to get them from like the Oriental store. I think you can get them at, I don't know if you can get them at Kroger's. That's actually a fantastic question. I don't think you can cause I don't think I've ever seen them there. Off the check, there's a Spanish store that I go up to up off Bethel Road. Okay, give me pick number four.
00:29:31
Speaker
Number four, I am going to, this is probably going to be an unpopular one, but the regular Lay's original wavy, the red bag chip, because I love eating like a sandwich with chips. If I'm going to eat a sandwich, I'm going to eat it with chips. So give me just original wavy because there's a little extra crunch to it. Perfect. It fits with everything. That's a good pick. That was actually, it was and it wasn't my next pick because I was going to take classic Lay's, but I'll take the classic Lay's off the board since you got the wavy. I like the, like I said, I like the classic over the wavy.
00:30:00
Speaker
okay so my next pick then pick number four for me i think i'm gonna go not with the classic frito but i do love classic fritos i'm gonna go with the honey barbecue frito twists i don't know if you've had them i love them i knew that i had to take at least one frito and it's either classic honey barbecue or i like the chili cheese frito but i like the honey barbecue twist to me
00:30:22
Speaker
It's my favorite of any of the honey barbecue chips. I don't like Lay's regular barbecue that much. The Doritos barbecue, the new one's pretty good, but I like the Fritos honey barbecue the most of any barbecue chip. I haven't had that one yet. I'm like you. I'm like original normal Fritos I'm good with. I love the Fritos scoops. You give me a dip, a taco dip. I mean, come on now. That's the way you need. Have not had the ones you're talking about.
00:30:46
Speaker
Now for my last pick, this will tell me whether or not I can take it and it would have been higher on the list. Do you consider the Cheeto a chip? It is a chip and I'll stop there. I'll let you finish. Okay. If the Cheeto is a chip, it probably would have been number one or number two on my list. And if we're calling it a chip, then I'm going to take the Cheetos.
00:31:02
Speaker
I'll take the classic crunchy Cheeto as my chip, but I do love Cheetos puffs. And when you're in a mood for Cheetos puffs, nothing else comes close to hitting the spot. Like you can't substitute out any other chip. It has to be the Cheetos puffs. So I'm going to take Cheetos with my last pick.
00:31:17
Speaker
I'll let you have that, another unpopular opinion. As much as I'm a chip guy, Cheetos is my least favorite chip. I'm not a Cheetos person at all. But you give me like the gallon of like the just cheese puffs. Oh gosh, absolutely. But for some reason, like regular Cheetos, no. Okay, give me your last pick. My last pick, I'm gonna go with...
00:31:34
Speaker
You need to go to it with the same flavor. But I love the Jimmy John's Salt and Vinegar Chips. Or if you don't go to Jimmy John's, Cate Cod Salt and Vinegar. Another one that good with sandwiches or you can eat those by yourself. It's just the only downfall. Life's number five. I love the taste. But when you finish with that bag, your mouth's going to be hurting. It's going to be a little bit, you know, it's, it kind of hurts after a while. It burns a little bit, but it's still a fantastic taste.
00:31:56
Speaker
You know, we're ending this both hating each other's last pick because salt and vinegar is my least favorite chip. That's good, dude. That's a one-two punch. I'm not a big fan of anything. You know, I don't like pickles because they're in vinegar and I really don't like anything that's too overly vinegar. I don't get the British where, you know, they don't really have ketchup. You know, they just dip their fries and vinegar to me is absolutely insane. Might get in some fights in Scotland when I'm eating fish and chips. But overall, I think you got a pretty good list.
00:32:25
Speaker
Likewise. Likewise. That was a good back and forth. Do you have any honorable mentions? Any other chips that we missed that were on your list that you want to discuss? I don't know if you'd call it chips. I've been getting into Chex Mix lately. Is that a chip? We're going with that? I guess they technically have chips in it. It's in the chip category. I don't know what it is that I stayed away, but lately I've been like, okay, I can do this. I can stand by this. Which Chex Mix? Like classic or do you like one of the flavored ones?
00:32:50
Speaker
I'm still doing, you know, some investigating. My girlfriend did come back home with like Tex Mix flavored, Chex Mix. And it was one of those that like, you know, you take handfuls and you're not stopping at just one handful. You're going multiple. So it's like a door that I've opened and I'm trying new ones, seeing what I like. So we'll go, I'll go with that. I like the honey one the most, the honey Chex Mix. I guess sweet tooth though. The cheddar cheese is okay. I don't really like the bold barbecue. Good to know. Good to know.
00:33:15
Speaker
My honorable mention that's a chip but not a chip is anything Cheez-Its. Classic and white cheddar are the two best, but I know it's a cracker though. I know it's a cracker, but it's a chip. It's a fine line, but I'm glad you said that because Cheez-Its is fantastic. Fantastic. All right, Danny, now it's time for our last segment, Afternoon Delights Book Club. Why don't you tell the people with your all-time favorite book, something that you really love recently, what would you recommend to people to pick up and read?
00:33:42
Speaker
So, I've read two books in my life. That's another one that you guys read a ton of books. Marty, again, Marty and me Castle got me into reading books, and so I've read two. Do you count listening to audiobooks as... Yeah, we'll count audiobooks. Okay. I'll just talk about both books. The second one is the one I recommend. The first book is, I drove down to Miami, Florida from Ohio with my dad in the car.
00:34:03
Speaker
and I listened to David Goggins Can't Hurt Me. And that was a fun listen with my dad in the car, for those who know about it. I think my dad appreciated that one too. That was a good book. But I kinda like war books, nonfiction, so I'm gonna recommend The Operator, if you're familiar with that book. It's, who's the guy? It's the guy who was, it's about the operation of assassinating Osama bin Laden. So that was probably my favorite book that I read and the one I'd recommend.
00:34:32
Speaker
Okay, the operator. You need to get reading, you need to get some more audiobooks in ya. You gotta tune in, go back, listen to every episode, and you'll get a whole list of books to either listen to or read. Yeah, I think Barty and Mate Castle gave me like 10 books each to read too, which, it's a list. I know, I can do better. It's either a book or a movie. What are you, are you gonna pick one for me? Go with movies. Books take too long. You can get caught up on the movie list much faster than the book list. Very true, very true. Alright Danny, well that does it for our episode. Do ya enjoy your time on Afternoon Delights?
00:35:01
Speaker
I did. I appreciate the invite. This was fun. It was good meeting you, Matt, and I'm glad I finally actually got to know your name and your face while doing this. It was a good time. We'll know a little bit more about each other the next time that we play Fortnite or Warzone. I appreciate you coming on and taking time out of your day. You were a great guest. To everybody out there listening, we appreciate you taking your time to listen to a bunch of yahoos talk about chips. Please come back, listen to all the episodes. We really appreciate it.
00:35:29
Speaker
And I'm your host, Matt Latimer. I'm just reminding you that it's a good day to have a good day. So long, farewell, I'll be your Saint Goodnight. I hate to go and live this pretty side. So long, farewell, I'll be your Saint Andrew. I do, I do, to your Andrew Andrew.
00:35:57
Speaker
you
