From $50 to 150 Deals: Taylor's Journey

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.

Who Are the Solarpreneurs?

00:00:31
Speaker
What is a Solarpreneur you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A Solarpreneur is a new breed of Solar Pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.
00:00:43
Speaker
Hey, what's going on Solar

Avoiding Burnout in Solar Sales

00:00:44
Speaker
Printerverse?
00:00:44
Speaker
Today we're gonna be talking about five ways to stay in a peak mental state and never get burned out, okay?
00:00:51
Speaker
A lot of people can feel like they're getting burned out in solar, but let's dispel that myth, let's conquer it, let's get into it.
00:00:58
Speaker
My name's Taylor Armstrong, we're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and hopefully have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:01:07
Speaker
Hope you're doing awesome, hope you're gearing up for a great summer,
00:01:10
Speaker
ready to push hard, close lots of deals.
00:01:13
Speaker
And as always, thanks for making the Solar Printer Podcast the first listen of every Tuesday and Friday

The Importance of Backup Audio

00:01:20
Speaker
coming at you.
00:01:20
Speaker
So I wanted to just apologize before we jump into the episode.
00:01:25
Speaker
I've had a couple recent audio just mishaps going on a few episodes ago.
00:01:32
Speaker
Unfortunately, hopefully you listened to the episode with
00:01:36
Speaker
Doug Robinson, CEO of Legacy Power.
00:01:39
Speaker
Fantastic episode, but if you noticed, the audio was a little messed up on it, not the greatest.
00:01:45
Speaker
And that's like the worst episode I could ask for to have audio problems.
00:01:49
Speaker
But what happened was we recorded it all on these little external mics, and I went to grab the audio file, was looking for it, about to publish it.
00:01:59
Speaker
Audio file was nowhere to be found.
00:02:01
Speaker
Learning lesson,
00:02:02
Speaker
Always double check, have backup audio sources.
00:02:06
Speaker
Luckily, I did have just camera going, so I was able to pull audio from that.
00:02:10
Speaker
But if you listen to it, it's not the greatest and just really unfortunate.
00:02:15
Speaker
I debated just not even publishing it, but it was too good to not publish.
00:02:19
Speaker
And hopefully, Doug will do another podcast with us soon.
00:02:22
Speaker
Yeah, learning lesson from me.
00:02:24
Speaker
And then also recorded several podcasts at SolarCon recently.
00:02:28
Speaker
And there was some background noise going on.
00:02:31
Speaker
We recorded them in the conference in like the exhibitor hall.
00:02:35
Speaker
There was a lot going on.
00:02:36
Speaker
So I know some of those turned out a little shaky.
00:02:38
Speaker
So hopefully you can have patience and just know that, hey, we're keeping it real and trying to improve.
00:02:44
Speaker
I know I got issues sometimes with audio, but part of the process.
00:02:48
Speaker
So I will constantly try to improve it, make it better.
00:02:51
Speaker
And as always, appreciate any feedback our solopreneur audience has for me.
00:02:56
Speaker
But that being said, let's jump into

Staying Focused at Work and Home

00:02:58
Speaker
the episode.
00:02:58
Speaker
Hopefully this audio quality is decent.
00:03:01
Speaker
And today I want to talk about just five things you can do to stay at a peak mental state, to just combat the feelings of burnout, to just have a better mindset.
00:03:13
Speaker
Some things that have personally helped me and that I've seen help a lot of other folks as well.
00:03:17
Speaker
So the first one, this is something that I heard actually from Ashton Buswell at the most recent SolarCon.
00:03:25
Speaker
One of his big secrets is when he is on the doors, he's 100% on the doors.
00:03:31
Speaker
When he is with his family, he's 100% with his family.
00:03:35
Speaker
Now, I know I talked about this in our SolarCon recap episode, but I think this can be repeated.
00:03:41
Speaker
It's that good.
00:03:42
Speaker
So something I struggle with and a lot of reps, newer reps, even experienced reps, actually probably more so experienced reps, is door knocking can be monotonous, gets to be the same thing over and over.
00:03:53
Speaker
So what do some of us do?
00:03:54
Speaker
We got ADD.
00:03:55
Speaker
We can't handle just standing there.
00:03:57
Speaker
So we get on our phones.
00:03:59
Speaker
We're playing games between doors.
00:04:01
Speaker
We're checking social media.
00:04:02
Speaker
I've been guilty of it.
00:04:03
Speaker
We're sitting on the curb.
00:04:05
Speaker
for a little bit, recovering.
00:04:07
Speaker
So something Ashton said is we need to go all in.
00:04:11
Speaker
We need to make doors the focus when we're on the doors.
00:04:14
Speaker
Closing deals the focus when we're in an appointment should go without saying.
00:04:19
Speaker
But then a big one when we're with family.
00:04:22
Speaker
or especially if you're a married person like myself, be all in in your relationships.
00:04:27
Speaker
This is something I struggle with a lot.
00:04:30
Speaker
And it can be hard.
00:04:31
Speaker
Sometimes we have customers calling us.
00:04:33
Speaker
Sometimes we're with family, friends, whatever.
00:04:36
Speaker
But we got to know when to turn off these devices, when to switch the focus.
00:04:41
Speaker
And I think this is part of staying in a peak state is because if we can have those moments where we're not struggling,
00:04:46
Speaker
halfway in where we don't have to have, you know, 20% of our brain still thinking about solar.
00:04:51
Speaker
How powerful is that?
00:04:53
Speaker
You can switch us on, switch it off.
00:04:55
Speaker
An adjustment I've made recently is actually just at the gym.
00:04:59
Speaker
I used to always be responding to texts, answering customers at the gym.
00:05:03
Speaker
I noticed my workouts were getting longer and longer.
00:05:06
Speaker
So I decided to make it a point.
00:05:07
Speaker
You know what?
00:05:08
Speaker
Any text I get from a customer, it can probably wait an hour until I finish my workout.
00:05:13
Speaker
And not only are my workouts a lot better quality since doing this, I also get through them a lot quicker and then I can fully focus on the next thing.
00:05:21
Speaker
So this is something I would definitely suggest if you're not already.
00:05:25
Speaker
Just be all in on what you're doing.
00:05:27
Speaker
Be 100% on the doors.
00:05:28
Speaker
Be 100% with your family.
00:05:30
Speaker
If you're taking the day off, be 100% day off.
00:05:32
Speaker
Okay, Sundays, I don't work at all.
00:05:36
Speaker
And again, I'm not perfect with this, but I try to be 100% with family.
00:05:40
Speaker
Nothing about work on Sundays, except for my weekly planning, right?
00:05:45
Speaker
So I guess thinking about it a little bit, but not responding to customers, nothing like that.
00:05:49
Speaker
So that's number one, be all in.

Boosting Confidence with Sales Reviews

00:05:50
Speaker
Number two, this unique one that actually just came up as I was researching some content for this episode.
00:05:57
Speaker
And that is when you're feeling down, we've all had those moments where we feel like, man, did I forget how to knock a door?
00:06:04
Speaker
Did I forget how to close a deal?
00:06:06
Speaker
Unless you're superhuman, I think the best of us, we have these down moments where all of a sudden it feels like we can't sell anymore.
00:06:13
Speaker
So a cool tip for this.
00:06:15
Speaker
First, to preface this, you should be recording your appointments.
00:06:19
Speaker
You should be recording yourself on the doors.
00:06:21
Speaker
Hopefully you're already doing that.
00:06:22
Speaker
If you're not, start doing it.
00:06:23
Speaker
I don't care how good you are.
00:06:24
Speaker
There's always room to improve, right?
00:06:26
Speaker
But here's the secret.
00:06:28
Speaker
If you're feeling like, oh, I can't sell, I can't close, go back to your best recordings of you.
00:06:34
Speaker
Maybe you're closing that deal that took three hours that you finally was able to walk it down.
00:06:39
Speaker
Maybe you set that appointment, right?
00:06:42
Speaker
on the doors or on the phone, whatever, but record yourself in the process, then you're going to have a whole library to go back to.
00:06:49
Speaker
When you feel like you suck, you can't do this anymore.
00:06:52
Speaker
Go back to those wins.
00:06:54
Speaker
It's so easy to forget that we are good at this, that we are improving.
00:06:57
Speaker
But if you can go back, re-listen to yourself, easiest way to do this is on the Cereal app, by the way.
00:07:04
Speaker
Little plug for Cereal.
00:07:05
Speaker
But go back, listen to those wins.
00:07:08
Speaker
And that's going to help.
00:07:09
Speaker
It's going to help you stay confident and remind yourself that you can sell.
00:07:13
Speaker
You can close.
00:07:14
Speaker
You can set that appointment.
00:07:16
Speaker
That's number two.

Networking and Idea Generation

00:07:17
Speaker
Number three, attend events.
00:07:19
Speaker
Hey, I am an event junkie.
00:07:21
Speaker
You guys see me at a lot of solar events, a lot of sales events.
00:07:25
Speaker
And I think I'm getting a little bit better at this.
00:07:28
Speaker
I don't go to quite as many as I did before, but I still probably average three, four events a year at least, you know, bigger events.
00:07:38
Speaker
And these things, they really help refresh your mind.
00:07:42
Speaker
They really help networking, getting new ideas.
00:07:44
Speaker
And every single event I go to, I come out of it fired up, ready to roll.
00:07:50
Speaker
and ready to just go out and sell because I know that that's valuable time I'm taking off.
00:07:54
Speaker
I could have easily made 10 grand in the days that I was off going to this event.
00:07:59
Speaker
So I got to make up for it.
00:08:01
Speaker
I got to implement the new ideas.
00:08:03
Speaker
So if you don't attend events, I would recommend it.
00:08:06
Speaker
And we're always previewing events.
00:08:08
Speaker
We're always recapping them so you can hear about them.
00:08:10
Speaker
But hopefully that inspires you to go to that next

Improving Sales Techniques through Feedback

00:08:13
Speaker
event.
00:08:13
Speaker
In number four, that's getting outside feedback, whether it's from a manager or
00:08:19
Speaker
whether it's from another rep in your office, this is crushing it.
00:08:22
Speaker
Have someone go out and shadow you on the doors.
00:08:25
Speaker
Here's a big one.
00:08:26
Speaker
Go analyze your time.
00:08:27
Speaker
What are you doing?
00:08:28
Speaker
We've talked about time studies on the podcast.
00:08:31
Speaker
Go write down for every 15 minute increment what you're doing during the day and then have a manager hold you accountable.
00:08:37
Speaker
Send that report of what you did.
00:08:39
Speaker
to a manager, to another rep, someone that's doing well and say, hey, this is my schedule.
00:08:45
Speaker
What do you think of this?
00:08:46
Speaker
Is this enough to have success?
00:08:47
Speaker
Have them give you honest feedback.
00:08:49
Speaker
And if you want to take it to an even higher level and have more success, hire a coach.
00:08:54
Speaker
You can get outside feedback.
00:08:56
Speaker
Hit me up.
00:08:57
Speaker
I am doing some audits right now for people.
00:09:00
Speaker
If you want to get on and let's hop on a call and I'd love to just dissect your sales process a little bit, see if there's any way I can help.
00:09:07
Speaker
But on top of that,
00:09:08
Speaker
consider getting a coach.
00:09:10
Speaker
We do have a coaching program.
00:09:11
Speaker
So if you want to reach out about that too, can definitely get you some details on taking yourselves to another level.
00:09:17
Speaker
But that's number four, get outside feedback, whether it's another rep in your office, whether it's a manager or whether it's, which I think is the best, getting a coach, getting a program, someone that can analyze what you're doing on a daily basis in yourselves.

Managing Emotions with Therapy

00:09:31
Speaker
And last but not least, and this is going to segue directly into our featured guests on the next episode, that is consider getting therapy.
00:09:40
Speaker
I guess this could kind of fall into coaching.
00:09:42
Speaker
But a lot of us, we think therapy is for like losers, for crybabies.
00:09:46
Speaker
Okay, maybe I'm speaking for myself.
00:09:49
Speaker
But I used to think therapy was just for whiners, for people that couldn't handle their emotions.
00:09:54
Speaker
But let me tell you, I have done therapy.
00:09:57
Speaker
I'm not currently doing it, but I have done some therapy.
00:09:59
Speaker
And it's not just for crybabies.
00:10:02
Speaker
It can help anyone get in a better mental state, manage your emotions on the doors, and really it's going to help directly in your cells.
00:10:09
Speaker
So that's going to tie in the next episode because we have, he's known as the cells therapist, Mr. Corey Clark.
00:10:16
Speaker
He's going to be coming on the next episode of the podcast talking about why therapy is something you should consider and how it can help you in your cells.
00:10:24
Speaker
So consider that.
00:10:26
Speaker
It's not just for people that can't handle their emotions.
00:10:29
Speaker
I think it's for everyone, especially in sales, can benefit us greatly.
00:10:33
Speaker
Consider getting therapy.
00:10:34
Speaker
So just to recap one more time, five ways to stay in a peak state for sales performance.

Five Tips for a Peak Mental State

00:10:40
Speaker
Number one, be all in when you're out there, in your relationships, on the doors, in whatever you're doing.
00:10:47
Speaker
Number two, listen to recordings of past successes when you're feeling down.
00:10:52
Speaker
Number three, attend events.
00:10:54
Speaker
get refreshed, rejuvenated, get back into it.
00:10:57
Speaker
Number four, get outside feedback from a manager, from other reps in your office, in coaching programs, or get a coach.
00:11:05
Speaker
Number five, consider getting therapy.
00:11:07
Speaker
These are all ways you can stay in a peak mental state and help yourself in this mentally challenging and sometimes exhausting line of work that we have here.
00:11:17
Speaker
So I hope that helps.
00:11:18
Speaker
I can't wait for you to hear next episode with Corey Clark.
00:11:21
Speaker
And this is one of the audios where there is going to be some background noise because we were recording it in the exhibitors hall at SolarCon.
00:11:29
Speaker
Hopefully you still can take away a lot from it.
00:11:31
Speaker
I think it has some super valuable ideas in it.
00:11:34
Speaker
So don't skip it, but love to get your feedback.
00:11:37
Speaker
We'll keep coming at you with fresh new content.
00:11:40
Speaker
Please leave us a like review if you have not yet.
00:11:44
Speaker
I love you and we'll see you on the next episode.

00:11:48
Speaker
What's up, solopreneurs?
00:11:49
Speaker
Hope you enjoyed the episode.
00:11:51
Speaker
Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created specifically for you in mind.
00:12:01
Speaker
One of the top questions I get asked on Instagram, on Facebook, by our listeners is, Taylor, where should I start?
00:12:08
Speaker
What episodes should I listen to in the podcast?
00:12:11
Speaker
You got too many podcasts, man, because now we have over 200 episodes.

00:12:38
Speaker
So go download it right now.
00:12:40
Speaker
It's going to be at top10.solarpreneurs.com.
00:12:44

00:12:49
Speaker
Don't forget the S on solarpreneurs.
00:12:51
Speaker
We will have that in the show notes.
00:12:53
Speaker
Go download it right now.
00:12:55
Speaker
And especially if you have not listened to them, go listen to them and you can re-listen to them.
00:13:00
Speaker
That's going to show you how.
00:13:01
Speaker
So go download it and we'll see you on the other side.
