Ruhaan has been my student at The Orchid School and now is currently studying in Class X. He has won silver and bronze medals in state level championships in horse riding.

He likes sports and riding and considers them to be his strengths.

In school he struggled with Math a lot and some difficulties in reading and writing. Realized the difference in class IV. Exam concessions like extra time, reader and writer helped him a lot. Exam concessions were not an advantage but level the field. Labels did not make a difference as he knew where he was struggling.

Regular practice reading and writing, one on one remediation in Math and constant support at tuition too helped him cope.

Mother, remedial educator and tutor were extremely supportive of him. Subject teachers were also supportive.

Tips for teachers: After group instructions give individual instructions, give time to process the questions and not ask suddenly. Give heads up before reading work. Reduced Classwork and homework. Have the expectation that all assigned work will be completed and submitted on time. Expectations are important as only then you feel like pushing yourself. Say it in shorter sentences so comprehension is better.

Tips for Parents: Be supportive and expect what is possible within limits and then push. Acknowledge the effort and praise for the effort. Take help from the right people, occupational therapist, remedial educator and counselor. It is recommended that you scold less and explain more and reason.

Tips for students: Practice reading and writing regularly. Seek out the people who can help you. Try hard. Nothing to be ashamed of and don’t be scared to ask for help. Seek out help and get guidance from the right people.

Horse riding is a way of doing something he is good at. Helped him concentrate more and self esteem increased. He became regular in school. A good way to use the excess energy. More open to writing activities, more organised thoughts and open to new things.

Focus on your strengths and use that to your advantage.

Online school was extremely boring to stare at one screen, difficult to focus and sit in one place. Teachers got back to him after class/school, checked up on him regularly and explained concepts. He is looking forward to offline school to meet friends and finds it easier to focus.
