Introduction to the Solarpreneur Journey

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you how to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.

Defining a Solarpreneur

00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solarpreneur, you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A solarpreneur is a new breed of solar pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one.

Lessons from Trump in Sales and Marketing

00:00:43
Speaker
Hey, what's up, solarpreneurs?
00:00:44
Speaker
Welcome back to another podcast.
00:00:46
Speaker
We're going to be talking about what Trump is doing that we can apply to our solar cells career.
00:00:53
Speaker
Yeah, we're not going to get super political.
00:00:55
Speaker
Don't worry.
00:00:56
Speaker
If you love Kamala, you can still join in on the podcast.
00:01:00
Speaker
But I'm just going to be speaking strictly from the perspective of what can we learn about cells and
00:01:06
Speaker
some things in marketing that Trump is doing that I think are giving him a huge edge in the election.
00:01:15
Speaker
The time of this recording, we're, I think, five days out from election day.
00:01:20
Speaker
So anything could happen.
00:01:21
Speaker
Who knows?
00:01:22
Speaker
Maybe it's rigged.
00:01:23
Speaker
We'll see what's happening.

The Importance of Consistency in Solar Sales

00:01:25
Speaker
But let's talk about some sales principles we can learn from Mr. Trump.
00:01:30
Speaker
So welcome back to the podcast.
00:01:32
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:01:33
Speaker
We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and hopefully have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:01:40
Speaker
And if you're watching the video version, recently upgraded a few things in the studio.
00:01:45
Speaker
So have the little solarpreneur sign in the background here.
00:01:50
Speaker
Got upgraded our video a little bit.
00:01:53
Speaker
So hopefully you notice the difference.
00:01:55
Speaker
But always trying to make small improvements.
00:01:58
Speaker
And I'll be honest, this podcast for like the first three years, three, four years, it's literally been recorded half the time, you know, just on my phone with little clip on mics.
00:02:13
Speaker
And the important thing is showing up.
00:02:15
Speaker
So hopefully people can take the principle from that is that you don't have to have things perfect.
00:02:21
Speaker
For me, I probably should have been making improvements, right?
00:02:23
Speaker
earlier than this, but hey, important thing is showing up and over time you can make upgrades to quality and things like that.
00:02:31
Speaker
Maybe do it quicker than I did.
00:02:33
Speaker
But so we're going to jump into the podcast today.

Trump's Media Tactics

00:02:37
Speaker
And again, we're talking about what Trump is doing, some principles we can learn from and apply.
00:02:43
Speaker
And really, I broke it down to four things.
00:02:45
Speaker
There's probably more, but there's four things in specific that I've noticed Trump do.
00:02:50
Speaker
that I think are extremely smart from a sales perspective.
00:02:55
Speaker
Just four principles here.
00:02:57
Speaker
And so the first one, he has mastered grabbing attention.
00:03:02
Speaker
This guy, he has been on pretty much every podcast you see around.
00:03:06
Speaker
He just went on Rogan.
00:03:08
Speaker
He's been on countless other podcasts that are geared towards, I would say, like, you know, millennial, younger people, 30 and under.
00:03:16
Speaker
And he's been on pretty much every news podcast.
00:03:21
Speaker
news channel.
00:03:22
Speaker
He's done constant interviews.
00:03:25
Speaker
And he's just, he knows how to grab the attention.
00:03:28
Speaker
And he, at times he says some ridiculous things.
00:03:31
Speaker
If you've been watching recently at the time of this recording, we had the whole garbage controversy where, you know, the comedian went to his rally, said the island of Puerto Rico was garbage.
00:03:42
Speaker
And then Biden came out and said, no, it's Trump supporters are garbage.
00:03:46
Speaker
And this guy, he, Trump, he goes to his next rally and he shows up in an actual garbage truck dressed as a garbage man.
00:03:54
Speaker
The marketing around that absolute insanity, like who shows up to the garbage man that had never been seen before in politics.
00:04:01
Speaker
So the stuff this guy is doing, he knows how to grab the attention.
00:04:04
Speaker
He says some controversial things, but he gets in front of people.
00:04:08
Speaker
And you look at the left wing media, the liberal, liberal media, they're constantly talking about him because for better or worse, he's always grabbing people's attention.
00:04:17
Speaker
You know, he's making names for people to Crooked Joe.
00:04:21
Speaker
We were Crooked Hillary, Sleepy Joe, Lion Kamala, all these names he's got.
00:04:27
Speaker
He's clever.
00:04:28
Speaker
So the principle from this is, are you grabbing attention in your solar sales career?
00:04:33
Speaker
Maybe you're marketing marketers know you got to be grabbing attention.
00:04:37
Speaker
But even if you're just knocking doors like myself, even if you are just, I don't know, working like a booth, whatever.
00:04:44
Speaker
You got to be grabbing the attention.
00:04:46
Speaker
However you do it, you need to be out there grabbing attention to get sales ultimately.
00:04:52
Speaker
So that's the first

Future-Based Messaging in Solar Sales

00:04:53
Speaker
principle.
00:04:53
Speaker
The second one is he has a future base caused.
00:04:57
Speaker
And what I mean by that, if you look at Trump's campaign slogan, it's make America great again, MAGA.
00:05:02
Speaker
And I believe that's part of what won them the 2016 election.
00:05:06
Speaker
But something really interesting, I actually heard this from my guy, Russell Brunson, ClickFunnels, great guy to follow for marketing, if that interests you.
00:05:15
Speaker
But he was talking about how if you go back to 1980, every single campaign has been won by someone that had a future-based cause.
00:05:24
Speaker
And in other words, they're
00:05:26
Speaker
talking about the future.
00:05:27
Speaker
They're not talking about the past.
00:05:29
Speaker
And just to give an example, you know, you go back to 1980.
00:05:33
Speaker
I didn't know this, but Ronald Reagan, his slogan was actually about the same as Trump.
00:05:39
Speaker
Let's make America great again.
00:05:40
Speaker
Right.
00:05:41
Speaker
And then the next one, it's morning again in America.
00:05:44
Speaker
You look back 2008, Obama change.
00:05:47
Speaker
We can believe in 2012, Obama forward 2020 Biden build back better.
00:05:54
Speaker
when Trump's in 2020 was actually keep America great.
00:05:57
Speaker
So just really interesting.
00:05:59
Speaker
All these campaigns, they're future based causes.
00:06:02
Speaker
And that's what Trump is doing this time again around make America great again.
00:06:08
Speaker
Make America healthy again.
00:06:10
Speaker
He's throwing all these things to get people to think towards the future.
00:06:14
Speaker
So in sales, I believe specifically for solar, I believe we should be also talking about a future-based cause in solar.
00:06:22
Speaker
And hopefully all of us are doing this, but how is the benefits of solar, how is it benefiting people's future?
00:06:28
Speaker
Is it giving them cleaner energy?
00:06:30
Speaker
Are you talking about the future savings?
00:06:32
Speaker
Are you talking about the future home value increases?
00:06:35
Speaker
And to many of us, I think sometimes we don't spend enough time talking about the future benefits that they're going to get and painting that picture.
00:06:44
Speaker
And that leads me into the third point, which is painting a vivid picture.

Using Vivid Imagery in Sales

00:06:49
Speaker
If you listen to any Trump rally, most of his interviews, he's using, I would say, extremely...
00:06:56
Speaker
picturesque language, for lack of a better word.
00:06:59
Speaker
And he's painting the picture, right?
00:07:01
Speaker
His campaign right now, they're extremely focused on the immigration stuff, right?
00:07:06
Speaker
So what does he talk about?
00:07:08
Speaker
Go listen to one of his rallies.
00:07:09
Speaker
He says they're dumping people in, they're bringing them in, they're dumping their prisons.
00:07:13
Speaker
They're coming from insane asylums, from mental institutions.
00:07:18
Speaker
They're rapists, they're gang members.
00:07:20
Speaker
And he's just getting you to think, wow, this is insane.
00:07:25
Speaker
And then another thing that you notice he does, he's always saying, think of it.
00:07:29
Speaker
Think of this.
00:07:30
Speaker
So think of this.
00:07:32
Speaker
Kamala, she's destroying our country because X, Y, Z. And I've actually been using it in my presentations.
00:07:39
Speaker
You know, you tell people, think of this.
00:07:41
Speaker
Think of this.
00:07:42
Speaker
Utility, they've raised their rates.
00:07:45
Speaker
They've raised their rates 100% over the past 10 years.
00:07:49
Speaker
Think of it.
00:07:50
Speaker
Can you imagine how much you're paying?
00:07:53
Speaker
So getting people to really picture in their head the problems and the issues and the things you bring up, I think it's really effective.
00:08:02
Speaker
So something we should do.
00:08:03
Speaker
And so, I mean, he's comparing the country to a garbage can for other countries because people are dumping their immigrants like garbage.
00:08:12
Speaker
Okay, and again, not trying to get political, just talking about the things that he's bringing up in his campaign, right?
00:08:19
Speaker
And the imagery he's putting in people's heads.
00:08:22
Speaker
So how can you use this in solar?
00:08:23
Speaker
How can you paint a more vivid picture when you're out there selling?
00:08:27
Speaker
Use lines like Trump saying, think of it.
00:08:30
Speaker
Uh, they're raising our rates, you know, tell the stories, right?
00:08:33
Speaker
He's telling lots of stories in his, uh, interviews in his rallies.
00:08:38
Speaker
So these are all things we should be doing when we're selling in our own presentations and so many different ways you can apply in recruiting, um, too.
00:08:47
Speaker
So some of you already know that I run my own door-to-door sales team here in San Diego.
00:08:52
Speaker
And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results.
00:08:59
Speaker
But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage.
00:09:03
Speaker
Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout.
00:09:06
Speaker
But it's not a door knocking app.
00:09:08
Speaker
It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market.
00:09:12
Speaker
It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:09:22
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too.
00:09:26
Speaker
I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up.
00:09:30
Speaker
But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show.
00:09:34
Speaker
You need to give my listeners a great deal.
00:09:36
Speaker
And they did.
00:09:37
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up.
00:09:46
Speaker
That's solarscout.app forward slash Taylor.
00:09:50
Speaker
Okay, back to the

Work Ethic Lessons from Trump's Campaign

00:09:51
Speaker
show.
00:09:51
Speaker
So those are the three things.
00:09:53
Speaker
And the last one, last thing I'm noticing is he is just a workhorse.
00:09:58
Speaker
He's working like crazy.
00:10:00
Speaker
You look at all the hours he's put in the interviews to rallies.
00:10:04
Speaker
I mean, you look on YouTube and it's literally like every three hours there's a live stream of him speaking somewhere.
00:10:11
Speaker
And one of the things that he brings up is he has not taken a day off for I think it was like 67 days.
00:10:18
Speaker
And for good reason, right?
00:10:19
Speaker
He's running for president of the country.
00:10:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:22
Speaker
And he talks about how Kamala she had.
00:10:25
Speaker
I don't know.
00:10:25
Speaker
Who knows if it's true, but he's always bringing up how Kamala took off two days last week.
00:10:31
Speaker
You know, we got six days before an election and she's taking a day off.
00:10:35
Speaker
He's going nonstop.
00:10:36
Speaker
So you got a hand to this guy.
00:10:37
Speaker
He's like 78, just going at an insane pace.
00:10:42
Speaker
And speaking for, I mean, think of it, right?
00:10:46
Speaker
He's speaking for like two, three hours at a time.
00:10:49
Speaker
And he's doing this multiple times a day.
00:10:50
Speaker
It's like sometimes I'll get done recording a podcast for even an hour and I'm like, my brain's fried.
00:10:58
Speaker
It's like it takes a lot of concentration, takes a lot of mental energy.
00:11:01
Speaker
You know, speaking of from I know there's the more you do it, the more you get used to it.
00:11:06
Speaker
But a lot of us, we're not used to putting up an extreme pace like that.
00:11:11
Speaker
So the way you can apply this in solar is like, have you pushed yourself to the limits?
00:11:16
Speaker
Have you pushed the pace?
00:11:18
Speaker
Have you done a blitz with your team?
00:11:20
Speaker
Are you doing everything possible to hit the numbers and get towards your goals that you want to reach?
00:11:27
Speaker
And maybe we're not running for president, right?
00:11:30
Speaker
But we should put ourselves up against a deadline, right?
00:11:34
Speaker
And something Michael O'Donnell talks about is he sells with a deadline always.
00:11:38
Speaker
He sells like the utility has a gun pointed to the homeowner's heads and they got to do it now.
00:11:44
Speaker
And it helps you with the urgency, but it helps you also to push harder because we don't know when things are going to change.
00:11:49
Speaker
We don't know when things are going to get more regulated.
00:11:52
Speaker
So set yourself a deadline, push hard.
00:11:54
Speaker
And, you know, I wouldn't suggest

Setting Ambitious Sales Goals

00:11:58
Speaker
working 67 days without a break.
00:12:01
Speaker
But maybe you work like two weeks without a break.
00:12:05
Speaker
I came from pest control where we did summers, where it was essentially four months with only one day off, right?
00:12:14
Speaker
And working like 12-hour days every day.
00:12:18
Speaker
So, um, try to set yourself some goals that actually push you and get behind a team, do a blitz.
00:12:26
Speaker
Our teams that we're about to start a competition where we're going to get called the masters.
00:12:30
Speaker
We're going to go extremely hard for the three weeks before Thanksgiving and, um, see what we're going to accomplish.
00:12:37
Speaker
So I would encourage you to do the same.
00:12:39
Speaker
And then, uh, just to remind you the four points with this, um,
00:12:43
Speaker
Grab the attention and get in front of your homeowners, get in front of the people who can buy your product.
00:12:49
Speaker
Number two, have a future based cause.
00:12:51
Speaker
Get people thinking towards the future and how can you benefit them in their future?
00:12:55
Speaker
You call it future pacing.
00:12:57
Speaker
This is something I learned from Jordan Belfort.
00:13:01
Speaker
He talks about that in his book, future pacing, paint that picture.
00:13:04
Speaker
And then number three, paint the picture, get them to imagine, you know, all these scenarios, the problems with the utilities, you know,
00:13:12
Speaker
Make the utility an enemy and paint a vivid picture of why they're the enemy.
00:13:16
Speaker
Just like Trump is doing when he's talking about they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats.
00:13:20
Speaker
He's painting some crazy pictures with that.
00:13:23
Speaker
So think of how you can apply that in your solar presentations.
00:13:27
Speaker
And number four, set yourself a deadline.
00:13:29
Speaker
Work like crazy.
00:13:30
Speaker
Push as hard as you can.
00:13:32
Speaker
see what you can achieve.
00:13:33
Speaker
I believe many people have not pushed themselves to the limits.
00:13:36
Speaker
Sometimes we need to push ourselves and embrace the discomfort because that's how we're going to grow the most.
00:13:41
Speaker
And that's how I think we're going to break through and achieve new levels of success.

Future of the Solar Industry

00:13:47
Speaker
So I hope that helped.
00:13:48
Speaker
Send this to someone that loves Trump.
00:13:51
Speaker
They're going to love this episode.
00:13:52
Speaker
And maybe if they hate Trump, send this to them too.
00:13:56
Speaker
and they can, you know, nitpick stuff.
00:13:58
Speaker
I'm not trying to get too political on this, but we'll see what happens with the election.
00:14:02
Speaker
It's going to be crazy either way.
00:14:04
Speaker
And I believe that whatever happens with the election, it's like we can only control so much.
00:14:09
Speaker
And I think the solar industry is going to continue moving forward, continue growing, whether Trump is the next president or whether Kamala is the next president.
00:14:16
Speaker
Okay, so I hope you enjoyed this.
00:14:17
Speaker
We'll see you on the next one.
00:14:19
Speaker

00:14:30

00:14:31
Speaker

Podcast Learning Resources

00:14:33
Speaker
Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created specifically for you in mind.
00:14:44
Speaker
One of the top questions I get asked on Instagram, on Facebook, by our listeners is, Taylor, where should I start?
00:14:51
Speaker
What episodes should I listen to in the podcast?
00:14:54
Speaker
You got too many podcasts, man, because now we have over 200 episodes.
00:14:58
Speaker
So what we've done, we created the top 10 most downloaded, most listened to, and I would say widely accepted, most useful podcasts that we've done here on Solopreneur.
00:15:11

00:15:44
Speaker
So go download it and we'll see you on the other side.
