There's going to be more going on with that. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out this year. We've got some big names on the list.

um 199 so far have opted for the free agent market. I think the biggest name that people are gonna be paying attention about is ah Juan Soto, the outfielder from the Yankees. And Soto's a career 285, 421, 532 hitter. And in the last two years, he's at 76 home runs and driven in 218. If all things were normal, he would be attracting attention from just about every major league team out there.

But because his agent is Scott Boris, who is infamous for wanting to drive prices up, you're only gonna see maybe, and I say maybe, a handful of teams looking at Soto. um Because right now the way way it looks, and just guessing by what he's done with other players,

I think you're looking at Soto being somewhere in that 30, 35, maybe $40 million dollar range. um I know he, Boros, when Soto was with Washington, was was claiming he had the first $500 million dollar player. I don't think he'll see 50, but the Dodgers have shown everybody how you can do that now. I mean, Shohei Ohtani, $700 million. dollars And they have they are not paying any of it for the next however many years. And you've got Soto in the same type of deal, at least time-wise, length-wise. So and it is possible. I think we could see something like that. But that's, like I said, that's going to limit a lot of teams um going in after. I mean mean, and the question is, will Soto want that? Or will he want his money up front? You know, a guy like Otani,

So we just gonna have to wait and see. um As for who goes after him, I think the Yankees will make a really big push to try and keep him. I think the crosstown Mets are going to try and throw a monkey wrench into that. I think you'd also see maybe Atlanta wanting to add some power to that lineup. ah The Padres may try to snag him back um and possibly to a lesser extent, maybe the Giants or Seattle. And man, how would he look in that Seattle offense but with a couples with the two guys that they got? Wow. But a lot of it's going to be what our team's willing to pay and how is it going to get structured. Like I said, the Otani deal last year has has opened up a new um avenue for teams that are wanting to get these higher

So it's going to be very interesting. there Now, so just like I guess said, he's lengthwise, he fits like a tiny because he's only 26. So you could get him on a 10 year deal. He's only 36 at the end. um I think maybe he's probably looking at a Bryce Harper type deal and that 12 to 13 Harper Soto, you know, that 12 to 13 year. Um, I'm sure that's what they're going to be asking for. And you know, it would not surprise me if somebody does go that, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he, if they back off and say, okay, we'll take a 10 year and then maybe try to get a couple, three years afterwards on, um, extensions or something, you know, uh, to finish out for his retirement.
Willie Adames & Shortstop Market Analysis

Uh, another name that I think probably is going to draw as much attention, but it, or draw attention, but won't be made much of in the, in the terms of media ah coverage is going to be Willie Adamas, a shortstop of the Brewers. You know, he's the kind of guy that every team really wants and actually needs a good all around player that can get you offense, defense, not be hurting you you know in terms of in terms of big payroll. Now he's still gonna cost some money. I don't think he's not gonna be anywhere near Soto money, that's for sure. um But you know he had 251, 331, 462 with 32 round trippers on 112 RBIs last year and stole 21 bases. This is why I say he's he's kind of an all around offensive player and he plays some gold glub caliber defense.

So teams that are looking for that middle and field help, you know, this is a place where they can go and they're going to get a guy that is solid. Uh, now he's 29, so he's three years older, uh, than Soto would be. So you're not looking at probably getting him on a long-term deal. You're maybe looking at six years, you know, seven max. Um, and you know, he was last year, he only made 12.2 million. So you go to the natural progression.

Maybe he's around the 20 to 25 million range. There might be a team or two out there willing to pay 30, but I doubt it. But if they can get him for 20 to 25, seven year deal, you're looking at $170 million dollars wrapped up in a guy that is going to be very productive for you. And I think, like I said, again, there's a teams that do need that shortstop upgrade, the Braves, the Giants, ah Guardians, Seattle again.

So, you know, you're looking, I would not be surprised if the Yankees didn't try to sneak in there, especially if they lose Soto. um You know, there's just a number of teams that could probably, he could probably fit into. Now, if teams are looking to upgrade their power and it's only going to need to be a short term upgrade, then I think you may look at Tiaska Hernandez or the Dodgers. um He's a lifetime 260 hitter. He's at 192 home runs and 572 RBIs over his career.

He's a solid overall average in power. He can drive in runs. He's an average defender. I mean, yeah I make that sound like it's something big. I didn't mean to really, ah but he is. He's and he kind of an average or maybe a slightly above average defender. He's not going to hurt you in the outfield. Almost what I'm trying to get at.

Um, so he's not just this big power bat that can't play in the outfield. Although if, you know, if there's a team that's got an outfield situation, it's pretty nice. You know, Hernandez could be a nice little DH for you. Um, he's 32. So that's why I say he's a short term solution because you're not going to pay him more than four or five.

ah Five years would be the absolute maximum. I could see anybody going probably is gonna be more like a three-year deal and You know, he's due to make he made 23 5 last year. That's about his market average So you're looking at you know, maybe 24 million in a year So just ah under seventy five thousand dollars for three years you put a couple performance bonuses in there make a nice little payday for him and And you know he got it for three or four years. And like I said, ton of teams could use him. I know, you know, you look at the Braves and you don't think of them needing power, but they could. ah The Giants obviously Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Padres, Angels, Royals, even the Cardinals might look at it. I know they're talking about moving court.

They've got the young kids for the outfield, you know, but he could be that that outfield DH guy um I know they're talking look they're talking at Luke and Baker maybe for that DH spot um you Maybe Contreras and Baker you can can switch off between DH and first base, but Hernandez could fit in there, too um but Like I said, if you're looking for that short term power bat, I mean, he could could be one when you look at, you know, you've got some other guys that are probably names that are going to be out there. And Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Santander, Alex Bergman, Peter Lonzo, they're all going to be out there. And so we'll just see how everybody plays out.

Pitchers on the Move: Snell & Flaherty

On the pitching side of things, we got two names who lingered on the vine last season and ended up signing, you know, wanting six, five, six, seven year deals, ended up signing for a year. That's Blake Snell and Jack Flaherty. This is where I think Scott Boris hurts himself sometimes.

Is, you know, he gets these guys and tries to get in this big money and when they can't, and they end up with these little one year deals, uh, if things go horribly wrong or even slightly wrong, then you're hurting yourself on your next deal coming in.

Now and on the upside, if you have a really great year, you just increased your stock value by a little bit. So ah Blake Snell was the was and Jack Flaherty were the two I'm talking about. Now Snell did get ah did get banged up last year, and and but he managed managed to finish 20 games for Frisco, going into 104 pitches and going five and three with a 3.12 ERA, 2.43 FIP, 145 Ks to just 44 walks.

It's not a bad season for being hurt. Um, now he's also a lefty, so that's going to make him a little more desirable. The issue with Snell is he's 31. Now that's not saying that's not necessarily a bad mark on him. It's just saying, okay, when you start looking at pictures,

Flaherty, who started with Detroit, ended up in the World Series ring with from LA. He did a nice campaign when you really look at it. 28 games, 317 ERA. He was 13-7. He only threw 162 innings, but you figure that's not really terrible. um you know That works out pretty decent.

He struck out 194 batters, only walked 38. So in that respect, he did a lot better than Snell did. But he also pitched him more games. So, you know, go figure. But Flaherty's only 29. So teams are still can still look at him at a six year deal and say, okay, we might be willing to talk to you about that.

Now, he didn't make a lot last year, you know, his market value right now projected just a tick over $20 million. dollars So a team can look at that and say, okay, six years, we'll give you 135. again he he's the kind of picture that I think when he's on and he's right and you know the the ceiling I think is still very high for him so you're looking at Padres could add to their their lineup the Mets the Braves always Braves are always looking Braves. Well, there's one thing you can count on the Atlanta Braves to do every off season and that's look for pitching. I mean, I think the Braves among a few teams get it, secure your pitching first, then worry about the offense. Uh, and they don't have a bad offense to worry about anyway. So just secure the pitching and everything takes care of itself. Um,

And that is a Corbin burns. See over the last four years, Corbin burns is 48 and 30 of the two nine for ERA 858 strikeouts and only 199 walks in 757 innings. I mean, there's, There's consistency there. There's a high level of consistency there and teams are going to be willing to pay for that. Um, you could see, I definitely think he's going to looking at a $30 million payday. Uh, how many years is going to be very interesting. He is age 30. So he's right at that little borderline area where I think, you know, teams are looking at five, six years.

Um, six years at 30 million makes him a $200 million player or almost a $200 million player. Um, yeah, it gives them 180. And then if you throw some incentives in, you could, you could sign a pretty decent little contract. Um, and again,

Here's a, I think the Dodgers may be looking at at him. You know, they've got, even with Shohei Otani, they've got money to spend, you know, and they're losing a couple of pictures to free agents. So Burns could be just restocking the tool cabinet, if you will. The Yankees could look at him. I think the Orioles might try to lure him back. I don't know if that'll be successful. We'll have to see it as the days go by.

Now, as we look at this off season and free agency, you know, you've got the teams like, uh, that are looking for just to upgrade, to get that next level of where they need to be, you know, uh, Royals, Cubs, Tigers, yeah even the giants to a certain extent. Um, I follow a still, I follow my team. I am a Packer fans. I do follow the Packers.

And I watch the games every so often. But I don't know, for some reason this doesn't seem, it just kind of snuck up on me this year. So I apologize for getting late into the season before talking about football. But we are having playoffs approaching fairly quickly here. So as we look at it, AFC standings or the AFC East is the Buffalo Bills pretty much run away from everybody in that division. They're sitting there at eight and two and everybody else.

ah Jets, Patriots, and Dolphins only have three wins each. um so I think that division is pretty much a ah wash and over. They have seen North a little more competition going on as Pittsburgh is seven and two, Baltimore seven and three. They're gonna fight it out until the end and see who's gonna come out of the head on that division. Cincinnati's hanging around at four and six, but they better start winning or they're definitely gonna be on the outside looking in.

The Browns are really no threat at two and seven the AFC shot south shows Houston now They've lost their last two games, but they're still leaving the division at six and four kind of test you how bad that division is um the Colts are Four and six and the Titans two and seven Jaguars two and eight ah AFC West has the only NFL's only unbeaten team in the Kansas City Chiefs at nine and oh The Chargers are six and three under new coach Jim Harbaugh Denver sitting there at six at five and five, so they're still in a playoff option Vegas however, the Raiders are disappointing two and seven and Now over in the NFC the East shows a healthy battle between a seven and two Eagle squad and a seven and three commander squad. Now Philly does have a five game winning streak and the only thing keeping the hapless Cowboys ah three and six out of the bottom of the division is more even the more hapless New York Giants. They can't seem to find neither team can seem to find a way to win no matter what they do. um The NFC North shows Detroit team that's

The NFC South has Atlanta sitting on top at 6 and 4, Tampa Bay's at 4 and 6, New Orleans, Carolina both 3 and 7, so there's still time for anybody to win that division. um The NFC West shows a Arizona team that was 2 and two and four, four weeks ago is now four and so four or six and four. The 49ers are next at five and four, and the Rams and the Seahawks both sit at the bottom at four and six. So again, that's another division. thats you could stiff If a team another team gets hot, we could see something change there. So if the playoffs were held today, the AFC would look like this. Denver would be taking on Buffalo the Chargers would play at Pittsburgh and Baltimore would be on the road at Houston So you guy which is kind of interesting here because yeah depending on who's winning or who's got the division win um You know Pittsburgh is playing at home at seven and two Against the six and three team while Baltimore at seven and three has to travel to Houston, you know and It's kind of crazy home home field advantage is not given to the team with a better record in the NFL like it is in MLB. Um, but that's, you know, that's the way it is. Uh, NFC would look like this. Detroit gets the first round by green Bay squares off in Philly. Washington goes to Atlanta and Minnesota would gout go out, go out to the desert and take on the Cardinals.

you know A couple of items here going through the NFL, as I mentioned, the Bears are a train wreck. They fired ah offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, passing game coordinator Thomas Brown will now assume the OC duties for the remainder of the season. you know The Bears, they traded Justin Fields and they went and drafted their quarterback of the future, Caleb Williams. And it's become an unmitigated disaster. Now, I don't know if it's all ah The offensive coordinator's fault, I mean, you look at his numbers, 178 of 294 for 1758 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight picks. Okay, if you have a passing game coordinator and an offensive coordinator and your quarterback is not doing well, you're going to fire the offensive coordinator and put the guy that's directly coaching that quarterback as your offensive coordinator.

Again, not sure where in the world this makes a lot of sense. Uh, but that's again, that's the bears for you. It's a train wreck. Now over in Dallas, Dak Prescott is out for the season to have surgery on a partially torn hamstring. Uh, that occurred back against the Falcons in week nine originally thought only to be out a couple of weeks. It looks like it's going to be longer and they're going to have to do without Mr. Prescott. But as I said, they're going nowhere. So they've got time. Um, now what the interesting part about that is prior to the season, Prescott had signed a contract distinction worth $240 million. dollars I mean, that's the irony of things.

And it happens you see it happen, though you can't do anything about injury, but you know you have a guy, you sign him to a big contract extension or a big contract, and at first year he basically brings you nothing. um And Prescott actually has struggled this year, 185 of 286 for only 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight picks. So you know maybe taking the rest of the year off might do him some good.

Cooper Rush will be the starter going forward with Trey Lance as their backup. In Pittsburgh, Russell Wilson is now the quarterback of the Steelers, replacing an ineffective Justin Fields. And so far this season, six games. Fields was 106, 160 for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one pick. Now, Wilson's only played the last three games so far, but he's 50 of 85, 737 yards, six TDs and one pick.

Um, you know, the Steelers are on a four game winning streak. And like I said, three of those games are mostly large part due to the change of quarterback of Russell Wilson. Uh, if you don't know, if you look at it, uh, three games, he's thrown forward 200 yards in games and in six games field never saw 200 yards.

So, you know, there, there it is. Uh, the commanders have been playing pretty well this season. Um, Jaden Daniels is really showing what kind of a dual threat he can be with nine passing touchdowns, four rushing touchdowns. Uh, Terry McClellan at wide receiver is his third in NFL receptions with 611 and tied for third with in TD catches with six. Uh, I mentioned Arizona Cardinals are being atop the NFC West.

and being on a ah winning streak. But is it really that prominent of a winning streak when you've beaten the Chargers, Dolphins, Bears, and Jets? i mean yeah I'm just laying it out there, folks. OK? But Kyler Murray doesn't look too bad. He's the being a dual threat over there as well, with 2,000 yards passing, 12 TDs. He's rushed for 371 yards and four more scores. ah The 49ers started out stumbling out of the gate.

So the Cardinals may find themselves in a playoff race or any division race before to try to get to the playoffs. um A lot of people are wondering about the Chiefs going undefeated. I'm going to say no. um I think they've got Buffalo this weekend and then Houston and Pittsburgh near the end of the season.

Um, first team we want to talk about is the currently listed as the number one team in the nation, the lady game Cox from South Carolina. Now they're coached by former Naismith player of the year in 91 or 92 Dawn Staley. Um, South Carolina is the defending national champion.

from last year, I bet people didn't realize that. There was so much about Caitlin Clark, they didn't know who won the the championship. um They are on a very impressive 40 game winning streak. They won, or rights maybe 41 now I think, but they won 38 games last year plus they're undefeated so far this season. They're actually number one in the polls and they captured all 31 first place votes this last week. That's hard to do. Now they're led by a gal by the name of 16 points, three and a half assists and two steals per game. Now this team is very tough on the boards. They've got 92 boards and in two games. 59 of those were on the defensive end, so they really played tough defense. Haven Johnson is their leading rebounder at eight boards a game and she's a guard.

She's only six, she's six two, but she plays a lot bigger and is often matched up against the bigger centers opposing team. She can play against them. She went to Mississippi state, didn't like it there. And Illinois was fortunate to bring her back in.

Destiny Jackson, who is right now been named to the Naismith Trophy Girls High School Player of the Year pre-season watch list. She's a five, six point guard from whitneying high school Whitney Young High School in Illinois.

um And Coach Green and her staff, they're not afraid to go international on this as either. they They reach out. They've signed three players and that will be coming in next season from outside the US, a 6'3 forward Sariah Parchment from Canada, 6'3 forward Manuela Alves from Brazil, and 6'3 guard Erika Feeney from Australia.

now 80 Josh Whitman earlier this year extended coach Green's contract until 2030. That's how much she has done in just two years with this team. Uh, but there's four additional extensions on that depending on certain metrics that could keep her into 2034. Um, yeah so as I say, I'm going to start doing more about this, uh, women's sports and, uh, this is going to be a regular feature on the program. You know, we'll talk, uh, basketball and soccer and softball.
