In Defense of Ska episode 196: MC Lars

The late 2000s was a rough time for US ska. Today, we look at a ska song from 2009 that did well. “This Gigantic Robot Kills,” a song by nerdcore rapper MC Lars featured Suburban Legends and MC Bat Commander of The Aquabats. MC Lars joins us to discuss how the song came about, and we analyze its many branches. 

The song’s story includes contributions by Wesley Willis, Wheatus, and a ska-loving murderous robot. We also go deeper down the rabbit hole with MC Lars and see his other connections, which include Weird Al, emo music, Hot Topic, and even co-host Adam Davis’s old band Link 80. 

We also talk about Mega Ran, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Rivals, and Fall Out Boy. Did we mention that Link 80 played Lars’ high school, and it was one of the first punk shows Lars ever saw?
