Introduction and Special Guest Feature
00:00:04
Speaker
Hey, guys. Hey, guys. Welcome to Bring Your Own, a catch-all bookish most of the time podcast. I'm Brandi. I'm Kendra. I'm Kayla. And today's a little bit different. We're going to play a fun little game.
Explanation of the Episode's Game
00:00:19
Speaker
Kendra, can you explain our little game and our guests?
00:00:21
Speaker
Yes, as many of you guys know, Brandy and Kayla are in two very long term committed relationships, but they're also bookish people. So we thought it'd be really fun if their partners came on the show today and we asked them bookish questions pertaining to their said partner.
Friendship Dynamics and Relationship Introductions
00:00:38
Speaker
Also, fun fact, Brandy and Kayla are my first friends who I ever became friends with who were already in prior relationships. All my other friends I either met when they were single and then they got into relationships or even friends since childhood. So you guys are like my first official like grown up.
00:00:52
Speaker
Friends, it's so weird. No, I mean, I am just like really young compared to you guys. I don't know. Just so youthful. So yeah, that's what we're gonna do today. It'll be very fun. So a little different than what we usually do, but I'm excited. Say hi, Valentina. Oh yeah, you guys should introduce, introduce who you guys brought with you today. And if you want to share the quick one minute version of how you met, you can do that as well.
00:01:21
Speaker
Okay. I brought my boyfriend Daniel. We have been dating for six and a half years. Um, actually in like two months, it'll be seven years since we met. And the quick one minute version is that we were both French horn majors at different universities and the Berlin Philharmonic was doing a US tour. And one of their stops was in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Daniel went to school. So my horn studio road tripped.
00:01:45
Speaker
to go see them perform. And of course, while I was there, I was swiping on Tinder. And Dana super liked me. So I went home. I was like, what a fun little distraction to just message this person who lives in a different state. And then we just never stopped messaging. And three months later, I convinced him to drive 12 hours on one weekend to come visit me. You're such a tinderella. That's crazy. Yeah, crazy.
00:02:19
Speaker
Jared and I have been married for five and a half years now, but we started dating. Well, we met in 2013, 2014. And then so we've known each other for almost a decade now. And we have been together for in December, it will be eight years. How we met. Let's see. When I moved to Kansas City, I transferred
00:02:35
Speaker
Hello world. Today I brought my husband, Jared. Say hi Jared.
00:02:45
Speaker
grocery stores where I worked at the time and that's where I met him. I actually talked to him at like a holiday party and he asked me out a few months later and I said no. And that was like 2014 and we were friends for like almost two years before I eventually said yes, before he weighed me down.
00:03:11
Speaker
Yeah. And that's it. Before we get into the questions, we can talk about what we're reading and what we're drinking, which probably probably won't be all that different from the last episode. But we're recording shockingly close together. I know.
00:03:25
Speaker
Yeah, I'm reading the exact same
Current Reads and Drinks Discussion
00:03:27
Speaker
thing. I'm still physically reading Salt Kiss by Sierra Simone and Listening to a Fire Endless by Rebecca Ross, but I'm almost done with that. I'll be finishing it today. Obsessed. I like this duology more than Divine Rivals at this point, which is crazy. Did not think that was going to happen, but we'll have to see how the Divine Rivals duology ends. And for fun drinks, I'm drinking a Pambelmuse the Croix. Daniel, what are you reading and drinking?
00:03:51
Speaker
Let's see, I can't remember what it's called, but I'm reading the Avatar Kyoshi novels at the moment. Oh, sick. Whatever the title of the first one is, I can't remember what it is. Rise of Kyoshi. Rise, okay, Rise of Kyoshi. And then to drink, I have a lovely special Getty blend of tea for my LA people. From the Getty Museum. From the Getty. Wow. It's black tea with a hint of rose. So it's kind of floral.
00:04:20
Speaker
I, again, I'm also reading the same thing. So I'm listening to Bring Your Midnight by Rachel Griffin. I remembered her name this time. Um, it's a fantasy, um, that I'm really enjoying. I'm almost done with it. I'm like 75% through. And I have an ice chai this morning with, and I made vanilla, like copycat vanilla, sweet cream, cold foam. Um, and it's delish. And Jared, what are you reading and drinking?
Game Rules and Couple Preparations
00:04:50
Speaker
I'm very casually reading the four hour work week by some guy who I can't remember his name. Yeah. And then I'm drinking a crappy latte because my espresso machine is not working right. It's getting the job done.
00:05:07
Speaker
Let's see, I am not drinking anything at the moment, womp womp. I just was not thirsty this morning. And then, yeah, still reading Across Time by Elizabeth O'Rourke and still barely scratched the surface of Fox Club by Adeline Grace. Will I finish it? Who knows? Who meets you at Wisteria? I might DNF it, I'm kinda bored.
00:05:33
Speaker
Oh, I just want I wanted to see Kayla's face. I'm not going to do I know I know I know I know I'm just trying to round me out. She's just trying not to hang in. I'm not going to say anything. I'm good. Okay, I'm good. Move on. Imagine if I did, though, you'd be so mad.
00:05:48
Speaker
I would be so mad. Okay, so the rules of the game are I'm gonna ask each couple the same question and the guy has to get it right and then you get one point for each question you get right and then you can get a bonus point because some of these questions have like bonus components to them. I will not be keeping score whoever is listening can keep score or you to
00:06:14
Speaker
Four can keep the score. And yeah, let's see who wins. How are you guys feeling ahead of this challenge? Super great. Confident. Yes, I'm. Yeah, I'm anxious. If I get if I get a point, I'll be happy. OK, we'll start off like I feel like kind of easy and then we'll get a little harder and a little bit more specific.
Favorite Books and Humorous Missteps
00:06:40
Speaker
So I think that like I I don't.
00:06:44
Speaker
bombard you with things about books all the time but like occasionally I will tell Jared the entire plot of a story but I think it just goes in one ear and out the other like you don't actually remember anything absolutely literally yeah if I don't like if you don't like show me the cover that it belongs to and then like then it's not associated with anything no I just got to see what it what it's referring to otherwise it's gone
00:07:05
Speaker
I got to see. I do want to note for people who are listening, we are doing this in front of our bookshelves. So you guys can turn around and look a little cheap. I'm good. That'll be that'll be your like phone a friend option. Like, yeah. Who wants to go first? Okay, cool. Jared, what is Kayla's favorite book? And you can get a bonus point if you can name her favorite romance book and her favorite fantasy book.
00:07:35
Speaker
They're different. But just focus on what you think her favorite book is. Your single favorite book. I feel like this should be pretty simple, like, or at least because I can't say anything. You can't help him. You can do it, babe. You can do it. Is it the second book in the series that we read? Which one was I called? No, I can't tell you. I don't remember what it was called.
00:08:04
Speaker
You can like describe it and we can like try to give you a title. Yeah. The one I just, what I just described, the second book in that series. Second book in a series is not a description. No, in that series that I read. Hey, well, what's it called? Um, I don't know what he's talking about. Orange and Roses. What's the second one? You can give it to him. You can give it to him. I think he's close enough. A Court of Mist and Peering. Yeah, you love that one, right? Yes, I love that book. Is it my favorite book?
00:08:28
Speaker
You have like three? No. Daniel also read Akatar. Well, the first two. Wow. And then I just got it. I'm just kidding. Jared only read the first two. OK. Yeah. That's your answer? No. Well, we got to call it. I already did it. OK. So no points. And I'm not even going to ask if you know what her favorite romance book is or her favorite fantasy book, unless you want to take a crack at it. You want to just try? Yeah. Because that's a fantasy. Yeah. You have 10 seconds. I'm not going to let you do this for forever.
00:08:57
Speaker
10, nine, eight, seven, six. Okay. That's not a bad guess. That's a good answer. Good answer. Good answer.
00:09:12
Speaker
Kayla, what are the answers to that question? Well, truthfully, there's like a couple, but like if I had to pick like really just one, I feel like I have to say The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker. Like I would have also accepted part of your world. What? That's the Alaska book. That's what I thought you were going to say. Jared calls it the Alaska book. And then like favorite fantasy book?
00:09:35
Speaker
I don't know. I guess right now it's divine rivals by Rebecca Ross, even though that's like sort of kind of not really a full fantasy book. Okay. So no points. Um, no points, but Magnolia Brooks is a really, really good answer. Um, halfway. The listeners can decide. Um, okay. Daniel, what is Brandi's favorite book? You get a bonus point and you can name both her favorite fantasy book and her favorite romance book.
00:10:03
Speaker
I'm gonna take a stab at fantasy. Okay. To start and we're gonna we're gonna go with the Dragon Republic.
00:10:12
Speaker
That is such a good, oh, that is a really good guess. That is such a good guess. I would say that the Poppy War trilogy is my second favorite fantasy series. And that is my favorite book in the Poppy War trilogy. Yes. However, my favorite fantasy book is probably Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee, the green-boned saga. Okay. And then on the romance side of things,
00:10:39
Speaker
there's there's about a billion books back here so struggling but uh some maybe something from from is it the addicted series also an incredible guess something from that one that's a great guess okay i don't know that i i his good answer good answer historically and my go-to answer for my favorite book ever is alone with you in the ether by all of you blake
00:11:03
Speaker
I remember that one. Oh, I don't even know if I would have picked that. But I knew that. I knew that I just like in the back of my head. Yeah, I don't talk about it super often because it's not part of a series and it's very eclectic. Some people love it. Some people don't. I am. I still need to read it. I haven't read it yet. Good job, guys. You tried. You tried. Yeah. Solid guesses. Solid guesses. OK, next question will go to Brandy and Daniel first. How many books has your partner read this
Reading Habits and Format Preferences
00:11:28
Speaker
year? You can ballpark it if you don't know the exact answer. This year. What is it?
00:11:33
Speaker
September already. Let's say, do we count repeat reads or unique reads? Yes, repeat reads as well. Total books. Total things read. Yeah. I'll go with 65.
00:11:51
Speaker
I have read 113 books this year. Daniel and the dog just dropped. Okay, Jared, how many books has Kayla read this year? Why can't I find it on my... This is audio books and everything? Yeah, this is like everything. 76. It's really cute. What does that number say right there, Jared? How?
00:12:16
Speaker
That's what I'm saying. 114. Kayla and I, every time we check, Kayla and I are within like a singular book of each other. I think Jared was closer. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, so we'll, we'll give Jared the point for that. Good job. What? That's almost 13 books a month. What's your point? That's a lot. Yeah. Okay. Jared and Kayla or Jared, does your partner prefer audio books, eBooks or paperbacks?
00:12:44
Speaker
That depends, I guess, because she does audiobooks when she's like driving or cleaning, but then she's got her ebooks and her hardback or her physical book. She likes the physical books if they look nice or if they're social addiction or, or sometimes she has multiple. So I don't, your favorite, your favorite physical.
00:13:05
Speaker
Like a physical book? Yes, physical book. Good question. What's actually really funny is I would have accepted ebook or audiobook, just not physical. So just because ebook is easier, it's quicker, I always tend to read quicker on my Kindle than I would a physical book and audiobooks
00:13:29
Speaker
Most of the books that I've read this year have been audiobooks, but you didn't know that. Okay. Good job. Yeah. E for effort. Daniel? I'm going to go with ebooks. Randy loves her Kindle. I do love my Kindle, but I read almost like 70% of my books via audio. Okay. That was my second guess. But yeah, I do love my Kindle. It's got buttons.
00:13:54
Speaker
Yeah. Hey, does he get a bonus point for telling the world that my Kindle has buttons? I have the Kindle Oasis. I'm really excited about the buttons. That wasn't the question, but you know, thank you for sharing. Daniel, what is Brandi's favorite trope?
Literary Tropes and Fun Predictions
00:14:12
Speaker
And trope, if you guys don't know, it's like, why am I like blinking? Oh, I had to tell him last night.
00:14:17
Speaker
Why am I blanking on tropes right now? I don't want to say whatever. I don't want to say what I know Brandi's is. So that's why I was like, I think I know. Although if I'm wrong, it's going to be a little weird. I think it's accidental pregnancy. I love accidental pregnancy. That's not a weird. That's not weird. It's single dad, which is like very close. Yeah. It's very much a truth.
00:14:44
Speaker
Okay. Can you get a point for that? Come on. We'll give him a half point. Okay. Okay, Jared, what is Kayla's favorite trope? The only one I've been exposed to that I actually know is like enemies to lovers. That's the only one because the book that I read, the first two that I read, that's the only one I've been exposed to. That's not right.
00:15:12
Speaker
Just like just for fun these even though you won't get a point just try and guess All right
00:15:21
Speaker
No. Um, I don't know that I maybe this was a trick question because I don't really fully know what I would have accepted. I would have accepted. Yes. Single parent grumpy sunshine. I told you about that one last night. I feel like grumpy sunshine is like, oh, you told him about grumpy sunshine. No, I was just naming a bunch of trolls. Oh, okay. I was just naming a bunch of them. Oh, sure.
00:15:45
Speaker
Oh my god, I told them I had to tell them about the knife to the throat throat trope that everybody loves in fantasy Yeah, that's like enemies. It's like a niche trope. It's like a sub trope of enemies to lover Okay. Well Jared, do you want to take a stab at what Kayla's least favorite trope is? I feel like I know yours Kayla
00:16:10
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Never mind. I know. I know. I know. I know. You can do it. Look at my eyes. Look at my eyes. You're telling me nothing. Just say one. Say one that I already named. Yeah, you should. Times up. OK, Kayla. The cheating trope. Yeah, Kayla hates when partners cheat and I'm like, hmm, never. Kendall's OK with it. She's like, it depends. I've we've said this before. But anyway, yes. OK, Daniel. Oh, boy.
00:16:40
Speaker
Brandy's already told me I'm not going to get it, so that's confidence. It's not you, it's the trope. Is will they, won't they a trope? Is that a thing? Oh, like miscommunication. I guess. Back and forth. I think about that in TV a lot. Like the edging of like. Yeah, edging. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, not really, because that's like every romance book, because if they got together in the very beginning. How about.
00:17:10
Speaker
I'll go with, um, final answer. Um, I'm blanking anything. Yeah. I'm really blanking friends to lovers. I love friends to lovers. You need to trope though. That was good. You named one on like, by far my least favorite trope is unrequited love for sure. A hundred percent.
00:17:33
Speaker
It makes Brandy crawl out of her skin. What's Jared pointing at you, Kayla, about unrequited love? You left him hanging for two years. Oh my gosh, that's so funny. At least you got her. That sounds so misogynistic. At least you got her. You won the prize. You won the prize. Daniel, who is Brandy's favorite book boyfriend?
Book Boyfriends and Girlfriends
00:18:00
Speaker
Well, I don't know.
00:18:04
Speaker
I guess I'll do a little callback to whoever was the star of Lone and the Aether. No? Okay. Good guess, though. Christian Hemms from the Magnolia Parks universe. No, all about him. From Daisy Hates. Yes, you do. I told you so much about that book. What can you tell me about that book? I appreciate it. I remember every conversation. There's hobbits and they eat six meals a day.
00:18:28
Speaker
Oh, shit. She kind of gagged you with that one, sorry. Jared, who is Kayla's favorite book boyfriend? The Alaska guy. I got to give it to him. I don't know his name. His name is Jonah. He has a pet raccoon. Awesome. Yeah. I knew you'd like that. I'll give it to him. That was solid. That's pretty good. Yeah. I'll take that one. Jared, who is Kayla's favorite book girlfriend? The Magnolia Parks lady.
00:18:57
Speaker
Magnolia Parks herself? Is that her name? Okay. No. Dang. I do love her, but she wouldn't be my favorite. Who is my favorite? You don't even know. Oh, Rose Calloway. Duh. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Rose Calloway. From the Addicted series, babe. That one down there. Okay. I will accept one of three answers. Daniel, who is Brandy's favorite book girlfriend? Even if you can just name the book. Yeah, we'll take the book.
00:19:24
Speaker
What haven't I picked today? Let's see. Maybe, maybe let's go with just giving me the eyes. Do it, come on. The star of a beach read. Oh, you're really close. That's a good guess. That's a good guess. All right. That was a good guess because I one of the answers I would have accepted was the star of, yeah, book lovers, Nora Stevens. I love saying that the star. Yeah.
00:19:54
Speaker
I also would have accepted Fayy Yatakola from You Made a Fool a Death with Your Beauty or Willa Grant from Heartless. Would you have accepted Daisy Hates herself?
00:20:04
Speaker
Sure, but she wasn't one of my main three. Okay, so now we have two, I would say like on the spicier side of things questions because we are women that read a lot of smutty books as I'm sure you two both know. So Daniel, what is your partner's favorite type of spicy scene to read? Bonus point if you can think of a book where this takes place. Favorite spicy thing to read. I feel like she really got into the three way thing.
00:20:38
Speaker
I'm looking for bonus points here. I'm looking for bonus points. I'm going to guess Saint. No, great author, though. The American Queen series. Oh, God, yeah. Yeah, that series. I'll be all about that one. Also, give me more. Do you remember that was the one I told you about the entire plot for, where they're on a road trip. It's like the husband and wife and their best friend are on a road trip and they own a sex club.
00:21:03
Speaker
Yeah. He's not. He's like, sure, of course. OK, Jared, what is Kayla's favorite type of spicy scene to read?
Spicy Book Scenes and Candid Revelations
00:21:11
Speaker
And can you think of a book where this takes place? I want to also say that Jared thinks that every single book that I own and I've ever read is super smutty. Is he lying? He's actually lying, yes. Every book that I grab, I can find immediately. Yeah, he thinks he has a secret talent for picking a book up and then opening it and immediately finding a spicy scene. Maybe we'll have you do that at the end, babe. Show off your talent. OK.
00:21:34
Speaker
Your favorite. He's not going to go ahead. I feel like it's either going to be super vanilla or super. He's thinking really hard. You guys hand to chin and everything. I'm going to go with just say anything, baby. Uh, anything at all. Some kind of getting nutted in.
00:22:00
Speaker
Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me. Pregnant me
00:22:29
Speaker
I don't know. I like mom. I hope my mom never, ever listens to this. Um, I like, like Dom sub. Can you name a book where that happens? I guess that's vanilla, but whatever. Yuck. Anyone's young, Jared. Oh my God. We don't King shame. Can you guess? I'm going to go with addicted after all. Oh, so close.
00:22:53
Speaker
literally one book to the right one book what's the next one read it out loud say it fuel the fire yeah you gotta yeah no no no otherwise i get a point for saint
00:23:07
Speaker
Okay, well, we are the next question we kind of already like touched on. But which of the following kinks often found in romance books? Does your partner love reading about the most? I'll give you three options, breeding, degradation, or role playing. And then you get a point a bonus point if you can name a book where that takes place. Pick one degradation. I think I would actually pick
00:23:31
Speaker
I like them all, like I said, I don't discriminate. But just for today's purposes, I think I would actually pick reading of those three. Can you name a book where that happens? Which one? The one you said? Yeah. Breeding. Breeding. What was the book that I picked last time? Oh, that was. Addicted. It's not addictive. Well, well. No, you have to pick a new one. OK. Rickless. That is like such a good answer. And I don't know why it doesn't like.
00:24:02
Speaker
Wish I had more breeding in it. Yeah, it's a good, it's a good answer, but it's not specific. It's not. Again, you were one off or two off. No, heartless. Oh, that's one off. I know because I still don't have powerless. But yes, heartless would be the next one. Daniel, which of the following kinks often found a romance book says your partner lived reading about the most? Breeding, degradation, or role playing? Bonus point if you can name the book.
00:24:31
Speaker
I was also gonna guess breeding in this case. Correct. Because who doesn't, you know? But as far as a book, what about one of these Sophie Lark books right here? One of the Sophie Lark books does indeed have a breeding kink. It does. The Bully.
00:24:57
Speaker
Not really. No. Good guess. I mean, Sophie Lark, I think would. Can I get half a point? Sure. For Sophie Lark. You can have a point for that. I get a half point for Reckless.
00:25:08
Speaker
I'm sure. Sure. No, because he didn't even get the first part correct. What even is the score? Fine. Whatever. I don't even know. I don't even know the score. I don't even have to tell us. I just want points anywhere I can get it. Bloody Heart is the book that has the breeding kinky really wants to impregnate her. You know what? Yeah. And boys. Yeah. Boys for the for the record is rich. Most of them usually. OK. But for the record, a lot of women like breeding in books, but they don't want kids like.
00:25:39
Speaker
I don't want a kid. I like reading in books, but I don't want a child right now. So like, maybe it's a conundrum, but it's true.
00:25:50
Speaker
Yeah. All my favorite tropes surround like single parent and accidental pregnancy, breeding kinks. Wow. Okay. Final question.
Books and Friendship Bonds
00:26:03
Speaker
Um, you guys have both played a really great game today, but this is the question I feel like we'll make or break you. What is a book that made Brandy and I become friends? Oh boy. This is stressful. Um, what are you doing? Don't help him. I'm just telling him to look at my eyes.
00:26:19
Speaker
I will I will accept two answers for this. I feel. Because there was one that made us mutuals and one that got really clocking. I feel like I feel like this one is is an Emily Henry book. Is that correct? No. No. I did read those because of Kendra. So that's like probably what you're thinking. See, I'm not going to say the answer right now because it might be similar to. Hmm.
00:26:46
Speaker
But that was, it was a good guess. That was a good guess because truly, like, not to sound like a fan, but like, before we were mutuals, I was like, oh, I'm reading this book because this girl I follow. That's what I was thinking, too. And Daniel's like, who the fuck is this girl? And then suddenly this girl is at your house like every fucking week. Look at me. You can do it. I don't. How long have you guys been friends?
00:27:10
Speaker
Almost two years. Almost two years. Close friends. Yeah, like two years or close. Our Kayla and I's anniversary is coming up actually in like next month. Congratulations. Thank you. I feel like it's got to be one of these because those are the first ones you read. He's pointing for reference. He's pointing at the Akatar series. Yeah. Well, that was like the first one that you when you started really getting back into reading. It was that series, right?
00:27:39
Speaker
But that's not the book. So that's not the right book. I mean, that's again, that's a really good guess because, yeah, like I DM'ed her about it, but I didn't. That's not the book that brought us really close. The book that brought us really close is the Alaska book, Simple Wild. Yeah.
00:27:58
Speaker
That was she was reading it like while I was in while we were in New England. Yeah. Yeah. I practically went on that trip with you guys. Oh, my God. Yeah. That was the book that made Kendra and I mutuals. And then the books that we have started like sending voice memos and really talking in depth about was the pre-series by Sierra Simone. Yeah. Got it.
00:28:20
Speaker
Yep. And I feel like the series that brought all three of us together would be the Addicted Callaway Sisters series, specifically the Like Us series, which we all hate, which I think is so funny. But that's what made Kayla and I mutuals was because I was reading the Addicted series and then we started sending voice memos and then I was like, I'm sending the same updates to Kendra and Kayla. Maybe we should just make a group chat.
00:28:43
Speaker
And the rest is history. Wow. So that was
Game Reflection and Insights
00:28:49
Speaker
the final question. How does everyone feel that they did today? I got a point at some point. Yeah, sure. Yeah. You got a couple of half points. Yeah. I didn't think you learned anything today. You did so much better than I thought you would. Whoa. Not in an insult way, but just like. You did about as well as I thought you'd do. Nice. Which is very good.
00:29:13

I think the shocking thing was that you guys, they both underestimated how much you guys read a year, so. Yeah. I just can't physically understand the time. We don't do anything. There's not enough hours in the day. Read fast, man. I can't. Get better. Well, I'm always reading a minimum of two books at a time. That's crazy to me. I get to work early. I don't read three books at a time. I usually am too. If I did more than one at a time, I get confused.

I'm still trying to get Brandy to read some literature like Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, Dune, some real head wow. I tried to get it. I tried to get it. I tried to get it. Real literature. He's being sarcastic.
