#498 Independence Day and Pikes Peak

Welcome

Welcome to Episode #498 of the 303 Endurance Podcast. We're your hosts Coaches Rich Soares and April Spilde. Thanks for joining us for another week of news, coaching tips and discussion.

Rich, my quads, hip flexors, and hammies are sore and guess who I have you to thank for that! That was one helluva ride up Pikes Peak today, and a lifetime climbing achievement for me! I remember vividly a couple of times thinking “this is freaking awesome,” and “damn, this is AWFUL!” Talk about an insane roller coaster of emotions. I ran the gamut. What I truly loved and appreciated about it is how patient you were and how you went at my pace. I would not have gotten as far as we did without you.

Pikes Peak Climb Experiences

00:00:20
Speaker
Happy Independence Day, folks, and welcome to episode 498 of the 303 Endurance Podcast.
00:00:25
Speaker
We're your hosts, coaches Rich Swartz and April Spilde.
00:00:29
Speaker
Thanks for joining us for another week of news, coaching tips, and discussion.
00:00:33
Speaker
And what a day it has been.
00:00:36
Speaker
Coach April and I kicked off the morning around 7 a.m.
00:00:40
Speaker
to do Pike's Peak and...
00:00:43
Speaker
I can't wait to hear April's reaction.
00:00:45
Speaker
It's a fun day, beautiful weather.
00:00:49
Speaker
Our legs are pretty torn up.
00:00:50
Speaker
April, how are you doing?
00:00:52
Speaker
Rich, my quads, hip flexors, my hamstrings are sore and I have you to thank for that.
00:01:01
Speaker
That was one hell of a ride up Pikes Peak today.
00:01:05
Speaker
And that was honestly a lifetime climbing achievement for me.
00:01:08
Speaker
So I just got to put that out there.
00:01:10
Speaker
It was pretty big.
00:01:13
Speaker
I remember vividly.
00:01:14
Speaker
a couple of times thinking, this is freaking awesome.
00:01:17
Speaker
I even put an explicit explicative in there.
00:01:22
Speaker
And then I had a couple of moments where I was like, damn, this is awful.
00:01:27
Speaker
So it was a roller coaster.
00:01:29
Speaker
Yeah, I think I heard you say this is awful a couple of times.
00:01:32
Speaker
It was funny.
00:01:34
Speaker
So I ran the gamut of emotions.
00:01:37
Speaker
What I truly love, though, and appreciated about this was I got to say thank you for your patience.
00:01:44
Speaker
And I really appreciate how you went at my pace.
00:01:47
Speaker
And I really wouldn't have gotten as far as I did without you.
00:01:51
Speaker
So I just got to say thank you for that.
00:01:53
Speaker
Yeah, you kind of need every little bit of encouragement that you can get.
00:01:57
Speaker
Yeah, going up that sucker.
00:01:59
Speaker
Wow.
00:02:01
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:02
Speaker
Before we get done here, maybe when I'll take advantage of a time when I'm not talking to try to look up the stats, but yeah, bike's peak ranks up there is one of the toughest bike rides in the, in the world.
00:02:13
Speaker
So yeah.
00:02:15
Speaker
No, really proud of you, April.
00:02:17
Speaker
I am ashamed of myself for not making sure you were better prepared.
00:02:21
Speaker
We were going to talk about, if you're trying to prepare for this, we'll, we're going to be actually putting together a loop of a training plan, maybe a downloadable
00:02:29
Speaker
on this in the future.
00:02:31
Speaker
But anyway, we got a lot.
00:02:33
Speaker
That's a little teaser for this.
00:02:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:35
Speaker
We got a

Endurance Nutrition and Sponsorships

00:02:36
Speaker
lot.
00:02:36
Speaker
There's a lot coming up in the show.
00:02:38
Speaker
And, but before we do that, let's give a shout out to our show sponsor, Generation UCAN.
00:02:43
Speaker
UCAN created Live Steady as an alternative to sugar-based nutrition products.
00:02:48
Speaker
April, you saw me.
00:02:49
Speaker
I had two bottles on my bike today, right?
00:02:52
Speaker
I did.
00:02:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:53
Speaker
Nice and chilled.
00:02:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:55
Speaker
I froze one last night and I have one that was icy this morning.
00:03:00
Speaker
Liv said he was purposely designed to work with your body, delivering long-lasting energy you could feel, whether it's UCAN energy powders, bars, or gels.
00:03:08
Speaker
Live Steady's unique time release profile allows your body to access energy consistently throughout the day, all the way up Pike's Peak, unlocking your natural ability to finish stronger and recover more quickly.
00:03:19
Speaker
Yes, in today's show, we've got all things Pikes Peak.
00:03:23
Speaker
We have our announcements.
00:03:25
Speaker
We do have a couple of news items as well.
00:03:27
Speaker
Excited to share.
00:03:29
Speaker
Our Ask a Coach is going to be all about how to train for this beast that you and I took on this morning so that you, the listener, if you want to take on this challenge, you're ready to go.
00:03:40
Speaker
I'm going to share with you my Get Gritty tip, which is how I turned this into my 2025 Misogi.
00:03:49
Speaker
And then Rich is going to bring you our tryout workout of the week, which is a stamina ride.
00:03:53
Speaker
We felt that was very fitting for this.
00:03:56
Speaker
And then our fun segment is all kinds of Pikes Peak trivia, fact or fiction, Rich.
00:04:03
Speaker
I love that.
00:04:03
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:04:06
Speaker
I hope I do well.
00:04:07
Speaker
I've done this a few times.
00:04:08
Speaker
I hope so too.
00:04:08
Speaker
If you're Coloradan, as you claim to be, you better do well.
00:04:12
Speaker
As I claim to be.
00:04:13
Speaker
Oh my God.
00:04:16
Speaker
Challenging my Coloradan citizenship.
00:04:19
Speaker
No, we're going to have a blast.
00:04:20
Speaker
And hey, let's get into some announcements.
00:04:23
Speaker
First, I want to give a shout out to our sponsor of our announcement section, which is Vespa Power.
00:04:32
Speaker
It's so funny.
00:04:33
Speaker
We are at the point now, April, where we will not start something tough without Vespa.
00:04:39
Speaker
Heck no!
00:04:41
Speaker
But you have got to remember to bring it.
00:04:43
Speaker
Yeah.
00:04:46
Speaker
Mistake number one, folks.
00:04:47
Speaker
There it is.
00:04:48
Speaker
Yes.
00:04:49
Speaker
I forgot my Vespa in my house.
00:04:52
Speaker
Thankfully, Rich is always prepared.
00:04:55
Speaker
I brought double.
00:04:55
Speaker
Hey, I was a Boy Scout.
00:04:57
Speaker
Anyway, yeah, no, it was all good.
00:04:59
Speaker
But no, it's so funny because when I took that second Vespa, I really sharpened up.
00:05:06
Speaker
Me too.
00:05:07
Speaker
I could just feel the shit.
00:05:08
Speaker
It got me down for sure.
00:05:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:11
Speaker
And that mental acuity, you really need that, especially descending, but even climbing too, because there's like little rocks in the way.
00:05:18
Speaker
Oh, Rich, I almost went off the side a couple of times in the dugout area.
00:05:25
Speaker
I'm trying to think of what that's called, but I really think having the ability to just be able to maneuver fast was pertinent to my safety.
00:05:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:34
Speaker
Yeah, for sure.
00:05:35
Speaker
So yeah, it's basically, it's a metabolism catalyst that basically helps you shift your body into natural fat burning mode and helps you tap into nice, steady, clean energy so you can stay strong, focused, and in the zone longer.
00:05:50
Speaker
It's not fuel, just a metabolic catalyst.
00:05:53
Speaker
And we've got a link here in the show notes.
00:05:56
Speaker
You have a one-time discount code 303ENDURANCE20.
00:06:00
Speaker
There's a couple of different products out there.
00:06:03
Speaker
Just the normal pouches.
00:06:06
Speaker
I think, April, you like the, which is the CV25, and I think you like the Junior.
00:06:11
Speaker
Yeah, I enjoy both, but I find that the Junior is a little bit funner to take because it's got that hit of orange juice.
00:06:20
Speaker
Yeah, right.
00:06:21
Speaker
It does taste like orange juice a little bit.
00:06:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:24
Speaker
Cool.
00:06:24
Speaker
All right.
00:06:25
Speaker
Of course, today we did our Pikes Peak ride and it was a blast.
00:06:30
Speaker
April, I'm really proud of you.
00:06:32
Speaker
I was looking at our stats from today and 23 total miles.
00:06:39
Speaker
It's so funny.
00:06:40
Speaker
This doesn't sound, you know, you say 23 miles.
00:06:42
Speaker
Well, why did that take you two hours and 31 minutes with an average speed of 9.2 miles?
00:06:49
Speaker
April, you want to tell the listeners something?
00:06:53
Speaker
It's because it was 14,000 feet.
00:06:54
Speaker
We climbed 11,000 feet.
00:06:56
Speaker
That is the highest I've ever been.
00:06:57
Speaker
Well, we started from 7,000, 7,400 feet, right?
00:06:59
Speaker
And we got to 11,000.
00:06:59
Speaker
Thank you.
00:07:00
Speaker
Thank you for clarifying.
00:07:00
Speaker
It was every bit of that was one stroke at a time.
00:07:17
Speaker
One pedal stroke at a time.
00:07:19
Speaker
Pray to God you don't fall over.
00:07:23
Speaker
So yeah, that's why it was that long.
00:07:26
Speaker
It took that long.
00:07:28
Speaker
Well, you know, you come through the gate and the first mile or so, maybe two miles is basically 10% grade.
00:07:35
Speaker
There's just like no... Yeah, it starts out.
00:07:39
Speaker
And then it flattens out a little bit.
00:07:40
Speaker
You get to about 6% grade for a bit and you're bouncing around between six and eight and then you get to Crystal Lake.
00:07:46
Speaker
And then from Crystal Lake up to, you know, at first...
00:07:51
Speaker
The first section out of Crystal Lake is a little deceiving because you get a little bit of six and eight and six and eight and six.
00:07:57
Speaker
And then it goes eight to 11 to eight to 11.
00:08:01
Speaker
You know, it's just like you're now in a pretty painful zone for a while.
00:08:05
Speaker
And it's just unrelenting, right?
00:08:07
Speaker
Yes.
00:08:08
Speaker
there's there's no like breaks really it's just steady steady climbing that one that one turn you stopped and i'm like well look up because that next what do you do what yeah what do you do when someone says that you look up my heart anyway uh no i i i um
00:08:30
Speaker
Real great effort today.
00:08:31
Speaker
And I'm really proud of you for, for really pushing and going really deep.
00:08:35
Speaker
I'm sure you're going to be sore.
00:08:36
Speaker
Get, make sure you take care of your, your legs, do some self massage and some foam rolling and maybe an Epsom salt bath.
00:08:45
Speaker
Yes.
00:08:47
Speaker
Coming up in a little bit here, we're going to talk about a tip for preparing and now we're going to put that together.
00:08:53
Speaker
All right.

Cycling and Triathlon Insights

00:08:54
Speaker
Let's go into Tour de France is kicking off tomorrow.
00:09:01
Speaker
Here's what I'll say.
00:09:02
Speaker
I've always watched it.
00:09:04
Speaker
I usually get to try to get the highlights at least.
00:09:07
Speaker
I don't go deep dive, but I always play.
00:09:10
Speaker
The tour website has an app and the app has a fantasy league.
00:09:17
Speaker
You get to pick your players, you get a budget, you get to pick your players.
00:09:21
Speaker
I just realized that
00:09:23
Speaker
just before we started recording, three of my team are out.
00:09:28
Speaker
They are not starting.
00:09:30
Speaker
So I need to hustle tonight and repick three.
00:09:35
Speaker
I can replace three team members.
00:09:36
Speaker
This is a problem.
00:09:38
Speaker
Anyway.
00:09:40
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:40
Speaker
So I'm excited.
00:09:41
Speaker
Here we go.
00:09:41
Speaker
Tour de France.
00:09:42
Speaker
We're not going to really cover this a lot, but I mean, I just, it's an exciting vibe and I like talking about it.
00:09:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:48
Speaker
I think it's one of the funnest parts of July.
00:09:50
Speaker
Like the whole month is just this amazing electricity around the tour.
00:09:56
Speaker
We definitely want to wish everyone a happy Tour de France month.
00:10:00
Speaker
And I can tell you, Rich, ever since the time of Lance Armstrong, and I know that's like super taboo, but I will say that's what brought me into cycling was watching Lance Armstrong on the bike and just rooting for America.
00:10:15
Speaker
It's been a summer favorite.
00:10:17
Speaker
And whenever I hear Phil Liggett and Bob Roll,
00:10:21
Speaker
doing their announcing, I am so amped.
00:10:24
Speaker
Like I just look forward to their voices are like family at this point.
00:10:28
Speaker
And I think three weeks of watching racing and the coverage, like you said, I love the highlights too.
00:10:35
Speaker
It's really fun to put on during my morning workouts.
00:10:40
Speaker
I just enjoy that whole vibe.
00:10:41
Speaker
It's a lot of fun.
00:10:43
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:44
Speaker
Well, you know, the, the current day, uh, hometown favorite for me is Sepkus.
00:10:50
Speaker
Uh, of course he's, uh, Junction and he's an animal and he's just really likable.
00:10:57
Speaker
And actually, uh, Bill had the, uh, had the good fortune of being at a, his like,
00:11:05
Speaker
coming home parade, if you will, a couple of years ago, um, after he had done so well, uh, actually, uh, it was the, um, Vuelta that he had won.
00:11:17
Speaker
Oh, wow.
00:11:19
Speaker
So it was his coming home parade for winning the Vuelta.
00:11:22
Speaker
That's amazing.
00:11:23
Speaker
So yeah.
00:11:24
Speaker
Anyway.
00:11:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:25
Speaker
Happy.
00:11:26
Speaker
I like that.
00:11:27
Speaker
Happy Tour de France month.
00:11:29
Speaker
And I too just love to tune in every day and follow it.
00:11:32
Speaker
So yeah, we'll have to cover this a little bit, I guess.
00:11:36
Speaker
Favorite stages and all the good stuff.
00:11:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:39
Speaker
I mean, yeah.
00:11:41
Speaker
The daily highlights.
00:11:42
Speaker
Okay.
00:11:44
Speaker
All right.
00:11:45
Speaker
Ironman new world championship qualifying system.
00:11:49
Speaker
Not going to go into a whole lot of detail here either.
00:11:52
Speaker
However, Ironman has announced a new performance-based age group qualifying system.
00:12:00
Speaker
And beginning with 2026 qualifying cycle, based on a bunch of research and testing and feedback, the new qualifying system is designed to reward athletes based entirely on how competitive they are relative to their age group and gender.
00:12:15
Speaker
So each qualifying event, athletes are going to be ranked based on their performance relative to a global age group standard.
00:12:24
Speaker
The athletes who perform the best on race day compared to this age group standard, irrespective of age or gender will rank the highest and earn qualifying slots.
00:12:34
Speaker
And like Rich said, we're not going to go too much further into it, but if you want to learn more, just go to ironman.com.
00:12:40
Speaker
If you go to their news section, it'll be, it'll come right up.
00:12:43
Speaker
So check that out.
00:12:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:12:45
Speaker
And maybe we'll talk about it in the future.
00:12:47
Speaker
I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.
00:12:49
Speaker
I don't want to make any snap comments.
00:12:52
Speaker
Exactly.
00:12:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:12:54
Speaker
So, all right.
00:12:56
Speaker
I want to give a huge shout out here to USA Triathlon and TriDot who have partnered up
00:13:03
Speaker
Coaches who coach at a TriDot pool school, actually, if you go to a TriDot, if you go, yeah, if you are a coach and you go to a TriDot pool school or you coach on deck, you can earn USAT continuing education units toward your recertification.
00:13:23
Speaker
Yeah, that's a pretty cool deal.
00:13:24
Speaker
Guess what, April?
00:13:25
Speaker
We're already working toward, we've already done one pool school this year.
00:13:29
Speaker
We're going to do another pool school this year.
00:13:32
Speaker
And we're earning CEUs along the way.
00:13:35
Speaker
Yes, I think this is going to come in handy for me because I'm working on my USAT level one.
00:13:40
Speaker
So next year.
00:13:42
Speaker
And I'm working toward my level two.
00:13:43
Speaker
So whoop whoop.
00:13:45
Speaker
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:13:46
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's, you know, honestly, I think it's good to have the different certifications.
00:13:51
Speaker
I think it's really kind of good to see how things compare and contrast.
00:13:55
Speaker
And I think it just makes Iron Man U, USAT, you know, these are both great certifications.
00:14:02
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:14:04
Speaker
And man, that Iron Man U is no joke.
00:14:06
Speaker
You really had to work for that sucker.
00:14:08
Speaker
Yes.
00:14:11
Speaker
That is truth.
00:14:13
Speaker
Anyway.
00:14:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:15
Speaker
And cool.
00:14:15
Speaker
I just want to give a shout out to Jeff Boo or two for coming on the pod last week.
00:14:20
Speaker
And it's going to be great to have him on deck as well.
00:14:24
Speaker
This pool school that we are hosting here in Colorado Springs, July 26th and 27th is going to be fire.
00:14:31
Speaker
We have a great venue.

So we also have a link in the show notes to register if this is something you want to actually improve your swim technique.
00:14:57
Speaker
This is a great venue to do it with great coaches.
00:15:01
Speaker
Yeah, totally.
00:15:01
Speaker
And yeah, Jeff, Jeff is the chief designer of the program.
00:15:05
Speaker
I mean, he is the master coach of the, the functional freestyle method that we teach.
00:15:12
Speaker
So yeah, it's a, it's an honor to have him, him, him there and to be learning, learning right from him.
00:15:20
Speaker
Awesome.
00:15:20
Speaker
Tell you what?
00:15:21
Speaker
Yeah, that's what got me in Boulder.
00:15:25
Speaker
I was just so impressed.
00:15:27
Speaker
And then having him on the podcast, walking us through our own swim workout.
00:15:32
Speaker
Right.
00:15:32
Speaker
It was awesome.
00:15:34
Speaker
All right.

00:16:17
Speaker
We're going to geek out.
00:16:19
Speaker
Speaking of geeking out, I want to geek out with you a little bit, April, here on what we did today.
00:16:25
Speaker
And I want to reframe what we did today in our context as coaches here.
00:16:31
Speaker
Coach and athlete.

Lessons Learned from Pikes Peak

00:16:33
Speaker
Coach and athlete, you bet.
00:16:35
Speaker
And you were preparing for this.
00:16:38
Speaker
And I have a pretty good understanding of what needs to happen on today.
00:16:44
Speaker
I've been doing this long enough that I have lost sight of how big of a task this is, you know, and putting into context your background as an athlete, we could have restructured this program to give you more time training on the hills.
00:17:01
Speaker
Because, I mean, if you go and look at your average power today,
00:17:05
Speaker
Well, you know, we haven't really dissected this yet, but average power on a flat and average power like these hills, especially when your cadence is so much slower.
00:17:18
Speaker
It's really hard, isn't it?
00:17:20
Speaker
I mean, talk about that.
00:17:21
Speaker
I mean, yeah, I felt like I was riding through mud the entire time.
00:17:26
Speaker
And I'm a pretty good climber on a mountain bike, but on a road bike, I was shocked.
00:17:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:33
Speaker
I mean, it was, it felt like I had, um, I was climbing with a weight behind me.
00:17:40
Speaker
You're always checking.
00:17:41
Speaker
Are my brakes rubbing?
00:17:42
Speaker
Right.
00:17:44
Speaker
Uh, am I in my lowest gear?
00:17:45
Speaker
Am I really in my lowest gear?
00:17:46
Speaker
This can't possibly be my lowest gear, right?
00:17:48
Speaker
How many times did that go through your head?
00:17:50
Speaker
So, you know, one of the things in preparing for something like this is to actually start to think about what are the
00:17:56
Speaker
gear inches that you need for a climb like this to keep the cadence that you need to stay comfortable.
00:18:03
Speaker
And that might require a cassette change.
00:18:07
Speaker
So I think that is one thing that we will evaluate going forward to see if we can get you in a better cassette to do this in the future.
00:18:14
Speaker
The other thing is just
00:18:16
Speaker
I mean, all things being equal, I mean, climbing is just different.
00:18:21
Speaker
You know, you're going slower.
00:18:24
Speaker
That kind of gets in your head.
00:18:25
Speaker
Talk about maybe some of the, talk about some of the positive things maybe that you were thinking as you were doing this climb today.
00:18:34
Speaker
Okay, well, we had a really cool game where Rich and I were kind of interlaying questions back and forth, which helped take my mind off of some of the things that were happening.
00:18:46
Speaker
And I kept, I told him that anytime I'm feeling pain, I'm going to look down at these wildflowers because there were some of the prettiest wildflowers that were in bloom on...
00:18:58
Speaker
On the route.
00:18:59
Speaker
And I felt like that instantly gave me a positive boost.
00:19:03
Speaker
I was also doing mantras.
00:19:05
Speaker
I was, you know, one stroke at a time.
00:19:07
Speaker
I was thinking you can do this just over this hill, things like that, where it was, you
00:19:15
Speaker
encouraging to me.
00:19:16
Speaker
And then Rich has my back.
00:19:21
Speaker
That's I was thinking that as well as like, I know that Rich is okay if we need to stop.
00:19:26
Speaker
And we found little cutouts where it was easier to just stop and catch my breath.
00:19:31
Speaker
And I felt so much better after we would take those, you know, two, three, four minute cutout pauses and
00:19:39
Speaker
for me to regain my composure and my breath.
00:19:43
Speaker
So those are some of the things I was thinking about when it was getting really hard.
00:19:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:47
Speaker
Okay.
00:19:48
Speaker
Well, that's good.
00:19:49
Speaker
I mean, I look, I'm glad that you, so you had a good, you have a lot of good skills for keeping yourself in the game there, you know, which is, which good luck.
00:19:56
Speaker
You know, a lot of people don't have those mantras or those interventions to catch those negative thoughts that can creep in spiral.
00:20:03
Speaker
Yes.
00:20:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:05
Speaker
We're going to talk about how to, you know, how to,
00:20:08
Speaker
prepare for this in a minute, but just really quickly share with our audience, what were some of the things that you, you realize you would want to do differently or, or you would want to focus on prepared for it be better prepared for.
00:20:23
Speaker
Yeah, I think I didn't realize how there was different climates.
00:20:29
Speaker
So I showed up, I did not have a jacket gloves.
00:20:35
Speaker
I was not thinking about the fact that we'd be rocketing down, you know, different, different temperatures.
00:20:43
Speaker
First off, just even getting there.
00:20:46
Speaker
Right.
00:20:46
Speaker
And then coming down full finger gloves, right.
00:20:49
Speaker
hat, right?
00:20:50
Speaker
There's things that you probably do need, absolutely, if you are going to be climbing a 14K to a 14K summit.
00:21:00
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:00
Speaker
Yeah, that's great.
00:21:01
Speaker
Yeah, of course.
00:21:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:02
Speaker
So the, the gear, right.
00:21:04
Speaker
Just having the right gear for the, for the, um, environment where we talked about the cadence, right?
00:21:10
Speaker
So having the right gearing, you know, the other thing here is you need some weekly volume of climbing.
00:21:17
Speaker
You really, really do.
00:21:18
Speaker
Cause climbing is just different.
00:21:20
Speaker
Um, right.
00:21:20
Speaker
It's just a constant pressure.
00:21:23
Speaker
It's like riding on a trainer, but it's like riding on a trainer with a lot of resistance.
00:21:27
Speaker
And so, and it really is, you really just can't quite simulate climbing unless you go out there and do it, you know, and you know, that, that probably means finding a way to in your workouts each week, make sure that you get that
00:21:44
Speaker
that dosing of climbing.
00:21:46
Speaker
And we'll put together, let's not get into it here today, but we will put together a training plan for this with a weekly, week by week, maybe a 10 or 12 week plan to get you ready for something like this.
00:21:59
Speaker
And that might be nice, right?
00:22:00
Speaker
We might be able to get some people to come do this with us next year.
00:22:03
Speaker
If we can give them a blueprint or a template for how to get there.
00:22:07
Speaker
And we'll have a lot of fun.
00:22:09
Speaker
We'll have a lot of friends.
00:22:10
Speaker
All right.
00:22:11
Speaker
How about that?
00:22:12
Speaker
That's great.
00:22:14
Speaker
I got to say, I really learned a lot about myself.
00:22:18
Speaker
I learned a lot about you, Rich.
00:22:19
Speaker
I feel like the amount of encouragement and just the good feelings really made it a special day.
00:22:29
Speaker
So I want people to walk away with the understanding too, that it wasn't just a suffer fast from the go.
00:22:34
Speaker
It, there were some really enjoyable moments.
00:22:37
Speaker
We got a really cool photo in front of Sasquatch at the crystal reservoir.
00:22:43
Speaker
And I'm, I'm going to save this a little bit for when I talk about Musogi, my Musogi, but I just, I had a big smile on my face most of the day.
00:22:52
Speaker
Even when I said, this is awful, we laughed.
00:22:56
Speaker
It was, it was good.
00:22:57
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:57
Speaker
So yeah,
00:22:59
Speaker
Let's lead into that.
00:23:00
Speaker
Actually, I think this is a perfect.
00:23:01
Speaker
So, Rich, going into today's ride, I was very unsure of what to expect.
00:23:09
Speaker
I was also very excited.
00:23:12
Speaker
I heard from Rich, you know, we've been talking about this for a while, that this is an annual challenge that he does.
00:23:18
Speaker
He's been doing it since 2017.
00:23:20
Speaker
And it's something he looks forward to every year.
00:23:22
Speaker
So I was super pumped that we were going to do this together.
00:23:28
Speaker
I honestly had never ridden on Pikes Peak Highway.
00:23:33
Speaker
I had never ventured into learning about it.
00:23:35
Speaker
I was very much like green.
00:23:39
Speaker
And other than what Coach Rich shared with me going into this.
00:23:43
Speaker
Which was apparently nothing.
00:23:47
Speaker
I wouldn't say nothing.
00:23:49
Speaker
I had an idea as far as like, this is going to be hard.
00:23:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:23:53
Speaker
But, you know, even with a lack of personal knowledge, I stared at that mountain.
00:23:59
Speaker
I've stared at that every day for over a year and a half.
00:24:03
Speaker
So I did know that this was going to be epic.
00:24:07
Speaker
And I also knew that this was going to be probably the hardest thing I did in 2025.
00:24:11
Speaker
So I called it my 2025 Masogi.
00:24:13
Speaker
And if you remember earlier back, I think it was actually earlier before 2025, we talked about this concept, which was first introduced, yeah, in Michael Easter's book, The Comfort Crisis.
00:24:26
Speaker
And the Misogi, it's an ancient Japanese practice.
00:24:31
Speaker
It's for purifying the soul, literally.
00:24:34
Speaker
And it's been redefined in modern terms as a way to push boundaries, build resilience and challenge what's possible.
00:24:42
Speaker
And the rule that you want to follow is that you have to pick a challenge that's so big and audacious that there's at least a 50% chance you won't succeed.
00:24:51
Speaker
So it's not that I didn't want to go into this prepared.
00:24:54
Speaker
It was more of an understanding that I know this is extremely hard.
00:24:57
Speaker
I know that I have a certain set of skills.
00:25:01
Speaker
I might not have all the skills to do this, but I have the understanding that I'm going to be pushing myself way outside of my comfort zone.
00:25:09
Speaker
And that's what in Masogi is.
00:25:10
Speaker
You're forcing yourself to confront your limits and then try to go beyond them.
00:25:14
Speaker
And for me, riding Pike's Peak on a road bike,
00:25:19
Speaker
Climbing possibly to a 14K summit was it.
00:25:23
Speaker
I knew I had a 50% chance or less of completing it on the first try.
00:25:30
Speaker
And I definitely stretched my limits.
00:25:32
Speaker
I feel like I went beyond them.
00:25:33
Speaker
There was one time when Rich had said we were we were, I think, like half a mile from the break check point.
00:25:41
Speaker
And he you know, I told him like, man, Rich, I'm starting to shake.
00:25:46
Speaker
And he gave me an out like he said, well, this is a good point.
00:25:49
Speaker
This is there's no shame in us turning around at this point.
00:25:51
Speaker
And I was like, you know what?
00:25:52
Speaker
I think if we could just take another minute, let's cut.
00:25:56
Speaker
Took a Vespa.
00:25:57
Speaker
That's right.
00:25:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:25:59
Speaker
And we kept going.
00:26:00
Speaker
And I was so proud because even though I felt like air altitude sickness, there was some shaking.
00:26:08
Speaker
There was some throwing myself over the side of my bike, trying not to hurl.
00:26:15
Speaker
I'm sure I showed up on someone's Instagram reel.
00:26:19
Speaker
There was buses going by of people videoing and like, I'm sure I'm on someone's highlight reel of their climb to Pikes Peak.
00:26:27
Speaker
But anyway, it was so awesome.
00:26:30
Speaker
And one thing Coach Rich kept doing was gently checking in with me and we agreed to go section by section and it was at my pace.
00:26:38
Speaker
And I kept smiling, laughing.
00:26:42
Speaker
We were swapping war stories.
00:26:45
Speaker
And it honestly got me all the way up to the brake check station.
00:26:49
Speaker
And I felt like that was amazing.
00:26:53
Speaker
And I walked away feeling proud of myself for the achievement that we made it to that point.
00:26:59
Speaker
And even though we didn't make it to the summit, I was so proud of how deep I dug and how far I came to my quote unquote breaking point.
00:27:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:27:11
Speaker
I was super proud of you.
00:27:12
Speaker
That is a big climb, even at no elevation, right?

Future Goals and Challenges

00:27:18
Speaker
Yes.
00:27:19
Speaker
That's a lot of climbing.
00:27:20
Speaker
We did about 4,000 feet of climbing today.
00:27:23
Speaker
That's a lot of climbing and that's a big pitch.
00:27:27
Speaker
I'm going to say average 9% on average.
00:27:31
Speaker
Wow.
00:27:33
Speaker
So that's a big ask.
00:27:34
Speaker
And then you do that and you're starting at 7,000 feet, higher than 7,000 feet.
00:27:41
Speaker
You've never, you didn't grow up here.
00:27:44
Speaker
You didn't grow up at elevation here.
00:27:47
Speaker
You haven't been here a really long time.
00:27:49
Speaker
Never hiked or been over 10,000 feet before.
00:27:55
Speaker
This is a, you move the needle in terms of your-
00:28:01
Speaker
Limits.
00:28:02
Speaker
Your limits.
00:28:03
Speaker
You really pushed your limits today.
00:28:05
Speaker
And guess what?
00:28:06
Speaker
You can now see the next horizon.
00:28:09
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:28:10
Speaker
You can see, oh, with a better cassette and with the right gear and with some weekly volume and climbing, some intentional weekly preparation for this.
00:28:26
Speaker
We're going to get there.
00:28:27
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:28:28
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:28:28
Speaker
Yes.
00:28:28
Speaker
Next year is going to be great, champ.
00:28:30
Speaker
You're going to be great.
00:28:32
Speaker
So.
00:28:35
Speaker
Yeah, Rich, I just wanted to say, you know, it seemed fitting for us to call it there, starting the descent with that being my the brake check.
00:28:46
Speaker
And when we reached the bottom, this kind of, you know, this speaks to what you just said.
00:28:50
Speaker
You asked how I was feeling.
00:28:52
Speaker
And I told you that I was excited to try again next year and see how much further I could progress.
00:28:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:57
Speaker
And I love that you had this sense of relief because I know you were thinking like, oh, God, did I scare her away from this?
00:29:04
Speaker
And no, it was really just like, let's break this down.
00:29:09
Speaker
Let's have our hot wash, if you will, and figure out how we can make this work.
00:29:14
Speaker
And it lit a fire.
00:29:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:17
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:18
Speaker
And that's the whole purpose of a Masogi.
00:29:20
Speaker
And, and that's what it is.
00:29:22
Speaker
It's not about getting to a summit.
00:29:24
Speaker
It's literally discovering what's inside of you when the odds are against you or they're uncertain and the air is thin and your legs are done.
00:29:35
Speaker
They're cooked.
00:29:36
Speaker
And it's about who you become when you lean into the challenge rather than backing away.
00:29:41
Speaker
Like it could have been easy for me to say, yeah, I'm done.
00:29:44
Speaker
I'm let's turn around here.
00:29:46
Speaker
This is good enough.
00:29:48
Speaker
I went past my limit, right?
00:29:50
Speaker
So it's so good to say, like, I truly feel like I reached, even though I didn't make it to the summit, I reached beyond.
00:29:58
Speaker
And I conquered that voice inside of me that said, you know, I couldn't do this.
00:30:02
Speaker
And that's, that's what really,
00:30:05
Speaker
lit my fire here to try again.
00:30:07
Speaker
So it's happening, baby.
00:30:09
Speaker
It's happening in 2026.
00:30:10
Speaker
We're going to do this.
00:30:12
Speaker
I love that.
00:30:13
Speaker
I love that.
00:30:14
Speaker
And it is.
00:30:15
Speaker
Hey, I wanted to, I told you at the beginning, I was going to look up where Pike's Peak ranked in the nation in terms of hardest climbs.
00:30:24
Speaker
These are the US top 10 hardest climbs from PJM Cycling, p-j-a-m-m-cycling.com.
00:30:35
Speaker
We've personally documented the U.S. top 10 hardest climbs, the top 10 hardest road climbs in the United States in order of difficulty.
00:30:42
Speaker
And I'll talk about how they get this in a minute.
00:30:45
Speaker
Mauna Kea, number one, Haleakala, two, Mount Washington, three, Pikes Peak, number four.
00:30:53
Speaker
Mount Blue Sky rounds it out at 10.
00:30:59
Speaker
Yeah, they were arranged in metric units by difficulty, distance, longest climbs in the area, altitude gained, highest summit, average grade, lowest start point, et cetera, et cetera, to come up with that list.
00:31:19
Speaker
Wow.
00:31:19
Speaker
Wow.
00:31:21
Speaker
Rare air.
00:31:21
Speaker
Power it back.
00:31:22
Speaker
Yeah, early.
00:31:24
Speaker
Yeah, so now it's your turn.
00:31:27
Speaker
What mountain, literal or metaphorical, are you willing to stare down in 2025?
00:31:32
Speaker
We are halfway through the year.
00:31:33
Speaker
That means you still have time.
00:31:35
Speaker
We want you to pick something bold, make it matter, and don't do it alone.
00:31:40
Speaker
Rich was essential for me.
00:31:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:31:43
Speaker
We'll be here cheering, supporting, and swapping war stories right alongside you.
00:31:48
Speaker
So get gritty, go big, grow.
00:31:52
Speaker
And that's your Get Gritty Tip of the Week.
00:31:54
Speaker
Awesome.
00:31:55
Speaker
And here is your try to work out of the week.
00:31:58
Speaker
Again, let's just go ahead and turn a stamina ride workout into a stamina ride for climbers for preparing for an event like

Training Tips for Climbs

00:32:09
Speaker
this.
00:32:09
Speaker
So this is going to be all about endurance and power.
00:32:12
Speaker
You're going to focus on maintaining your race position or your riding position.
00:32:17
Speaker
So you're going to be upright because if you're preparing for climbing, you're going to be upright.
00:32:22
Speaker
You also know that you're going to end up being in a slightly lower gear, right?
00:32:25
Speaker
You're going to probably be in your lowest gear if you're doing some steep climbing like today.
00:32:29
Speaker
What was our, I mean, you probably found your cadence down around 70 a lot of the times.
00:32:33
Speaker
Oh, no.
00:32:33
Speaker
I think it was even lower than that.
00:32:35
Speaker
I think it was 60, 55.
00:32:36
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:39
Speaker
So you're going to need to spend some time in lower cadence as you do these.
00:32:43
Speaker
So we're going to do a normal warmup, 10 minute warmup zone to mix in some 30 second spin ups off and on.
00:32:51
Speaker
Get some, get that lactate clearing system, do three by one minute in zone four, a minute on zone four, a minute back in zone two, back and forth for three, just to get the system going.
00:33:03
Speaker
Now at about 10 minutes, now you're all warmed up.
00:33:06
Speaker
What I would say here is do this, if you can do this and find a nice steady grade, find a nice steady climb, this is a great way to just now spend, you're going to do two by 12 minutes in this case, two by 12 minutes in zone four, and then you're going to
00:33:24
Speaker
Each of those, you're going to take a five minute recovery between those in zone two.
00:33:30
Speaker
So find this nice steady climb and then get into zone four power for that 12 minutes going at a grade of, let's say if you're preparing for something like Pikes Peak, try to find a grade of at least 8%.
00:33:43
Speaker
High grade near me is a great place to do that.
00:33:50
Speaker
Juniper Pass is another fairly decent place to do that.
00:33:53
Speaker
That's here pretty close here in the front range.
00:33:55
Speaker
We need to find some good places down by you, April.
00:33:58
Speaker
So the idea is do that two by 12 minutes in zone four, do a 10 minute back in zone two, just to get a little bit of recovery in and then do a one by 20 minute in zone three.
00:34:12
Speaker
Balance of the time in zone two, you know, the balance of the time here is going to be dependent on kind of where you are in your progression toward Pikes Peak.
00:34:22
Speaker
You're probably wanting to put in at least a three hour ride at some point in your preparation for Pikes Peak with a lot of climbing.
00:34:30
Speaker
And there you go.
00:34:31
Speaker
So the idea here is, again, to really prepare you to be in that climbing position and to be climbing at a grade that you're going to be preparing for and at a cadence that you are going to be geared for.
00:34:46
Speaker
So figuring out what that lowest gear is for you on that grade and what kind of cadence it produces is
00:34:55
Speaker
Can you manage that cadence?
00:34:57
Speaker
If not, look at swapping out and getting a, a, a larger cassette and then practicing at that cadence in preparation for, for Pikes Peak or whatever your big, your big climb is.
00:35:12
Speaker
Really, when you're doing this and you're executing this, try to build into it.
00:35:18
Speaker
If you've got multiple intervals like we had here, we had two zone four intervals.
00:35:23
Speaker
Try to make that second one a little bit higher than the first one just to get that body challenged and make those adaptations and those responses to that increasing challenge.
00:35:36
Speaker
The body will respond to that and you'll be stronger for the next ride.
00:35:40
Speaker
We'll talk about how to put this in a larger structure in the future.
00:35:45
Speaker
So there you go.
00:35:45
Speaker
There is your stamina ride for climbers workout of the week.
00:35:53
Speaker
Yes.
00:35:53
Speaker
Way to tweak that for this specific function here, Rich.
00:35:58
Speaker
That was very well done.
00:36:00
Speaker
On the fly.
00:36:00
Speaker
I love that.
00:36:03
Speaker
Pro, pro here.
00:36:04
Speaker
All right.
00:36:05
Speaker
That leads us to our final fun segment.
00:36:09
Speaker
We are going to be bringing it home on Pikes.
00:36:12
Speaker
I am going to be throwing some trivial fact or fiction to Rich to see where his merits are with Coloradan knowledge.
00:36:20
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:23
Speaker
All right.

Pikes Peak Trivia Fun

00:36:24
Speaker
So it's time to ascend into madness with a brand new segment we're calling Pike's Peak Fact or Fiction.
00:36:31
Speaker
We're taking one of Colorado's most iconic climbs, the infamous Pike's Peak Highway.
00:36:37
Speaker
Rich, your mission, should you choose to accept it?
00:36:40
Speaker
And you will accept it.
00:36:41
Speaker
No ifs, ands, or buts.
00:36:43
Speaker
is to tell us which of these high altitude statements are real and which are just altitude induced hallucinations.
00:36:50
Speaker
I almost had a hallucination today.
00:36:55
Speaker
You ready?
00:36:56
Speaker
Yes, I'm ready.
00:36:56
Speaker
This is awesome.
00:36:58
Speaker
Oh my God.
00:36:58
Speaker
Okay, let's go.
00:37:00
Speaker
All right.
00:37:00
Speaker
Number one, this is the statement.
00:37:02
Speaker
Race cars use jet engines for added thrust to ascend Pike's Peak.
00:37:07
Speaker
Do you want to give you just true or false?
00:37:11
Speaker
Yep.
00:37:12
Speaker
False.
00:37:13
Speaker
Okay.
00:37:14
Speaker
Well, tell me if you, what you're, yeah.
00:37:15
Speaker
Okay, good.
00:37:17
Speaker
We just, we just, we just don't have jet engine cars.
00:37:19
Speaker
I'm just saying.
00:37:24
Speaker
We especially don't have them going through forest, through national forest.
00:37:29
Speaker
You saw through there.
00:37:31
Speaker
Okay.
00:37:31
Speaker
All right.
00:37:32
Speaker
Well, while, uh, competitors use high output turbocharged engines, like 875 house, a horsepower Puget 208s, uh, you're correct.
00:37:43
Speaker
There is no bolting jet engines to their cars for these high altitude races.
00:37:49
Speaker
But did you know there's an actual race of Pikes Peak?
00:37:52
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:37:53
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:37:54
Speaker
Yep.
00:37:54
Speaker
Mount Evans.
00:37:55
Speaker
Sorry, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
00:37:58
Speaker
You bet.
00:37:58
Speaker
Yes.
00:37:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:59
Speaker
When I was looking these up, I was like, oh, this is so freaking cool.
00:38:04
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:38:05
Speaker
It's amazing.
00:38:06
Speaker
It's an incredible mountain.
00:38:08
Speaker
Incredible history.
00:38:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:11
Speaker
We should have done historical facts, but yes, this is great.
00:38:14
Speaker
Okay, good.
00:38:16
Speaker
Number two, runners have passed out at the summit due to thin air and needing oxygen revival.
00:38:23
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:26
Speaker
You think?
00:38:27
Speaker
I almost passed out.
00:38:28
Speaker
Yes.
00:38:29
Speaker
So I know these are a little too easy, but that's okay.
00:38:32
Speaker
They're fun.
00:38:32
Speaker
No, no, totally fun.
00:38:34
Speaker
No, it's a thing.
00:38:37
Speaker
Even having grown up here, I can't spend very much time up there.
00:38:40
Speaker
Yeah, it is thin.
00:38:42
Speaker
Have you heard of the doubler, Rich?
00:38:44
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:45
Speaker
What's the doubler?
00:38:46
Speaker
No, I don't think I have.
00:38:47
Speaker
Okay.
00:38:47
Speaker
Well, it's a Pikes Peak ascent.
00:38:51
Speaker
So it's a half marathon run up.
00:38:54
Speaker
And then the second day, so it's done in consecutive days, it's a Pikes Peak marathon.
00:38:59
Speaker
So they run up and run down.
00:39:01
Speaker
Oh, gotcha.
00:39:01
Speaker
Okay.
00:39:02
Speaker
Yeah, sure.
00:39:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:39:04
Speaker
Oxygen levels are roughly 60% of sea level.
00:39:08
Speaker
And there are documented cases of athletes needing supplemental oxygen at the summit aid station after fainting or showing signs of altitude sickness.
00:39:16
Speaker
So they've run up one day and then the next day they run up and they run down.
00:39:21
Speaker
That's crazy.
00:39:23
Speaker
Okay.
00:39:23
Speaker
Yes.
00:39:24
Speaker
Well, yeah, good for them.
00:39:27
Speaker
Yeah, you can have that.
00:39:30
Speaker
Number three, true or false?
00:39:33
Speaker
Pikes Peak birthed burrow racing alongside donkeys up the mountain.
00:39:38
Speaker
Burrow racing.
00:39:41
Speaker
Burrow racing is a thing, but I don't think it... I know it has its roots in Leadville just because of... Good.
00:39:51
Speaker
Okay.
00:39:52
Speaker
Wow.
00:39:53
Speaker
You earned your card right there.
00:39:55
Speaker
Burrow racing, known as... Yeah, go.
00:39:59
Speaker
My friend does it.
00:40:00
Speaker
My friend Kim does burrow racing.
00:40:02
Speaker
Oh, wow.
00:40:02
Speaker
Used to be one of the hosts on the podcast years ago.
00:40:06
Speaker
Oh, my gosh.
00:40:07
Speaker
How amazing.
00:40:09
Speaker
It's known...
00:40:10
Speaker
Known as Pack Borough, it originated in Colorado, but traces back to historic mining routes in Leadville and Fairplay, not Pikes Peak.
00:40:20
Speaker
The first official Pack Borough race began in 1949 along Mosquito Pass between Leadville and Fairplay.
00:40:26
Speaker
Yeah, we should do this.
00:40:29
Speaker
No, we should totally.
00:40:30
Speaker
No, this is a totally thing.
00:40:31
Speaker
No, look up.
00:40:33
Speaker
Google, I want to sign up for a borough race.
00:40:36
Speaker
They will give you a borough and you can run with the borough.
00:40:39
Speaker
No way.
00:40:40
Speaker
I would so be down.
00:40:42
Speaker
Holy smokes.
00:40:44
Speaker
Yeah, it's all about getting your burrow to go and keeping up with your burrow.
00:40:50
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:40:51
Speaker
I actually have another friend of the show.
00:40:56
Speaker
She was actually a part of 303 who actually has burrows, and they have burrows for this purpose.
00:41:03
Speaker
No way.
00:41:04
Speaker
I'm going to hook us up.
00:41:05
Speaker
Okay.
00:41:06
Speaker
Yeah, this is happening.
00:41:07
Speaker
Oh, my gosh.
00:41:08
Speaker
A whole new world just opened up, Rich.
00:41:11
Speaker
Wow.
00:41:11
Speaker
This is fun.
00:41:12
Speaker
Okay.
00:41:13
Speaker
Yeah.
00:41:14
Speaker
All right.
00:41:15
Speaker
Number four.
00:41:16
Speaker
Wow.
00:41:17
Speaker
What did we get into today?
00:41:18
Speaker
I know.
00:41:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:41:19
Speaker
I opened the lid here.
00:41:21
Speaker
Okay.
00:41:21
Speaker
Here's the statement.
00:41:23
Speaker
High altitude summer temps can freeze fuel lines in race support vehicles.
00:41:29
Speaker
Factor fiction.
00:41:30
Speaker
High altitude summer temps, like overnight temps?
00:41:35
Speaker
Like, I don't know.
00:41:37
Speaker
I don't, I mean, no, no, no.
00:41:38
Speaker
Good job.
00:41:40
Speaker
How old would it have to be?
00:41:42
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:41:44
Speaker
So although summit temperatures may dip near freezing, even snow in summer, modern fuel systems aren't vulnerable to frozen fuel lines in mild conditions.
00:41:54
Speaker
Saw through that one again.
00:41:55
Speaker
Ding, ding, ding.
00:41:57
Speaker
Ding, ding, ding.
00:41:58
Speaker
That was a blast, April.
00:42:01
Speaker
Thanks for spending 4th of July with me, folks.
00:42:05
Speaker

00:42:09
Speaker
Yeah, I'm still traumatized, Rich.
00:42:11
Speaker
You're going to have to wait.
00:42:13
Speaker
Okay.
00:42:13
Speaker
All right.
00:42:13
Speaker
You have to wait.
00:42:14
Speaker
You're going to ask me after we look into this pack burrow racing here.
00:42:18
Speaker
Oh, that's our next adventure.
00:42:19
Speaker
That's right.
00:42:21
Speaker
Yeah, that's got me jived for sure.
00:42:25
Speaker
All right.
00:42:25
Speaker
Well, we're going to have to report more on that one next week.
00:42:27
Speaker
