Taylor Armstrong's Journey to Sales Mastery

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.

What is a Solarpreneur?

00:00:31
Speaker
What is a Solarpreneur you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A Solarpreneur is a new breed of Solar Pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.

Listener Appreciation and Engagement

00:00:43
Speaker
What's going on, solopreneurs?
00:00:44
Speaker
Taylor Armstrong here with another podcast.
00:00:46
Speaker
We are here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:00:52
Speaker
Thanks for making the podcast the first listen of every Tuesday and Friday.
00:00:56
Speaker
Really means a lot.
00:00:57
Speaker
We've been at this for probably about, I don't know, a year and a half.
00:01:01
Speaker
Pretty consistent Tuesday and Friday episodes.
00:01:03
Speaker
So hopefully that's the first thing you wake up with on Tuesday and Friday is, oh, I got to go listen to the next podcast.
00:01:09
Speaker
I got to see what's dropping.
00:01:10
Speaker
Because if you're not, you are missing out.
00:01:13
Speaker
But I do put work into these.
00:01:15
Speaker
And so if you have not had the opportunity to go leave a honest review or share the podcast would be much appreciated.
00:01:24
Speaker
I don't ask for much in the podcast.
00:01:25
Speaker
And as most of you know, I am not making my money primarily from the podcast.
00:01:30
Speaker
I'm making my money out there in the field, out there knocking doors and grinding, just like probably most of you listening to podcasts.
00:01:37
Speaker
So it would be much appreciated if you can go do that.
00:01:40
Speaker
Leave a review on iTunes, rating on Spotify, and then just share the podcast with whoever you think could benefit from it.

Understanding Personality Types in Sales

00:01:48
Speaker
And so today we're going to be talking about something that I've heard some probably, I don't know, three, four trainings on from guys that I would consider.
00:01:55
Speaker
have mastered this.
00:01:57
Speaker
And I'm no master in this specific topic, but I do think I know the basics.
00:02:02
Speaker
And so I wanted to give a crash course on what are the different personality types we encounter out there as we're selling.
00:02:09
Speaker
And this is something that I didn't think was that important.
00:02:12
Speaker
I was always just like, okay, send me out there.
00:02:14
Speaker
I'm going to sell everyone.
00:02:15
Speaker
I'm going to treat everyone the same.
00:02:16
Speaker
I'm going to just push.
00:02:18
Speaker
I'm going to be assumptive.
00:02:19
Speaker
And I can sell whoever, which can get you far, to be honest.
00:02:23
Speaker
Okay.
00:02:24
Speaker
But
00:02:24
Speaker
What can get you even further, if you know how to identify the different personality types, the different ways people like to be treated.
00:02:32
Speaker
Okay, we've heard of the golden rule, treat others how you want to be treated.
00:02:37
Speaker
But what's the platinum rule?
00:02:39
Speaker
Treat others how they want to be treated.
00:02:41
Speaker
But if you don't know how they want to be treated, then how are you going to be able to deal with that?
00:02:45
Speaker
So that's why I think it's even more powerful.
00:02:47
Speaker
Learn some personality types.
00:02:49
Speaker
Learn to identify the type of person you're selling to, type of person that's sitting across the table from you.
00:02:55
Speaker
And I think this is the way you can jumpstart your success journey.
00:02:58
Speaker
close more deals and maybe take that closing percentage up by 1%.
00:03:03
Speaker
If you've been in this game for a while, you know, there's not really like, unless you're new, you can make changes and see massive improvements.
00:03:09
Speaker
But if you've been in this game for a while, if you've seen success, you're probably to the point where it's not about like making massive changes and seeing a massive difference.
00:03:17
Speaker
It's more about doing one or two small things different and seeing a 1% difference.
00:03:22
Speaker
But what could 1% difference mean over the course of the year?
00:03:25
Speaker
It can mean 12% different.
00:03:27
Speaker
Maybe you're 1% better every month.
00:03:29
Speaker
So look for those little things that can give you that edge.
00:03:33
Speaker
And personality types, I believe, is one of those things.
00:03:35
Speaker
So we're going to just get a little crash course on the personality types.
00:03:39
Speaker
We'll probably do a deeper dive into specific things with this.
00:03:42
Speaker
But just wanted to introduce some of what I've learned about these personality types.
00:03:47
Speaker
And then if it's something that people like, we will do more episodes on this.
00:03:51
Speaker
So I first heard about this, but first training I think I heard was at Door-to-DoorCon.
00:03:55
Speaker
I think it was 2019 maybe.
00:03:58
Speaker
A guy named Ian Wendt, he got up on stage and talked about all these different personality types, said how you want to sell to them and talked about why it was so important.
00:04:07
Speaker
And at that time, I just kind of tossed it off to the side.
00:04:10
Speaker
But now as I've heard more trainings, definitely think it is important.
00:04:13
Speaker
So Ian Wendt,
00:04:14
Speaker
I want to thank you for giving me the introduction to this.

Sales Tips for Different Personality Types

00:04:17
Speaker
This guy has mastered the personality types.
00:04:19
Speaker
And if you want to follow him, he is on Instagram.
00:04:21
Speaker
He's been on the podcast as well.
00:04:23
Speaker
So let's jump into four different personality types.
00:04:27
Speaker
Some tips you can use to identify them.
00:04:29
Speaker
Some tips you can use.
00:04:31
Speaker
things you can do to sell better to these types of people.
00:04:35
Speaker
And hopefully it's helpful.
00:04:36
Speaker
Okay, so number one, we're talking about the bulls.
00:04:39
Speaker
This should be pretty obvious what type of person is a bull.
00:04:42
Speaker
They are someone that is aggressive.
00:04:45
Speaker
If you look at careers, they're probably police officers, truckers.
00:04:48
Speaker
If you're selling out like boonies or, you know, small towns, things like that, you'll probably get more to these people.
00:04:55
Speaker
Confident people are just like, yo, what the heck do you want, you know, coming at you, pumping their chest up.
00:05:00
Speaker
Those are bulls.
00:05:01
Speaker
So what's going on with them?
00:05:03
Speaker
How do you sell to them?
00:05:04
Speaker
Well, number one, you got to be a bottom line.
00:05:06
Speaker
You got to get to the point.
00:05:07
Speaker
You got to be stern with them.
00:05:09
Speaker
You got to mirror them.
00:05:09
Speaker
Something that Ian says, if he sees a bull, he goes up, he pumps his chest up, shakes their hands, says, hey, how's it going?
00:05:15
Speaker
And you don't back down.
00:05:17
Speaker
Their interests are your interests.
00:05:19
Speaker
And you get them to like you.
00:05:21
Speaker
Something that has worked well for me with these people is you stroke their ego, their ego rather.
00:05:26
Speaker
And so things like labeling that.
00:05:29
Speaker
So if they have a nice house, if they have a nice truck, labeling it, you seem like the type of person that is smart with his money to have a house like this, things like that.
00:05:40
Speaker
And really just that's the key.
00:05:41
Speaker
You seem like it seems like labeling it, right?
00:05:45
Speaker
Seems like you're the type of person that's really good with his money.
00:05:47
Speaker
Seems like you're the person that has the best truck in the neighborhood.
00:05:51
Speaker
get them to agree.
00:05:51
Speaker
And if you can stroke their ego, these people love that type of thing.
00:05:55
Speaker
So that's your bulls.
00:05:56
Speaker
That's your assertive personality.
00:05:58
Speaker
And, you know, the tools to use with them, mirroring, acting like a bull yourself, labeling them, summaries of what you said, keeping it simple, and then just getting a that's right, getting them to agree.
00:06:12
Speaker
So if you label, seems like you're the person that's smart with his money, if you can get them to say that's right, you know, you're on the right track.
00:06:17
Speaker
So that is your assertive, that is your bull type of personality.
00:06:20
Speaker
Number two, you got your owls.
00:06:22
Speaker
Okay, what are owls?
00:06:23
Speaker
They are your analytical people.
00:06:25
Speaker
And to be blunt, they are probably my least type of people to sell to.
00:06:30
Speaker
These are your engineers.
00:06:31
Speaker
These are your people that want a lot of details with it, that want to be very, very thorough.
00:06:37
Speaker
Okay, and so with these people, you want to make sure it's really clear.
00:06:40
Speaker
You want to explain it in multiple ways.
00:06:42
Speaker
You want to say things like, did that make sense?
00:06:45
Speaker
Did I do a good job explaining it?
00:06:47
Speaker
Get them to talk and, you know, reassure them.
00:06:50
Speaker
And then some things that help with these owl personalities.
00:06:54
Speaker
is really just using data.
00:06:56
Speaker
And so I've talked about on the show here, keeping a tab of every single article, every single thing you say, having a backup visual representation to really just get them to buy it.
00:07:06
Speaker
Because people believe what they see, not what they hear.
00:07:09
Speaker
especially with L's, you want to have that proof of what you're saying.
00:07:12
Speaker
So be ready with these people to have articles that back up what you're saying, show them the spreadsheets, and just be ready to have all these tools and data ready, data comparisons.
00:07:24
Speaker
And that's how you're going to get these people, showing them lots of data.
00:07:27
Speaker
And, you know, hopefully they're not going to ask for a million quotes, but...
00:07:32
Speaker
Also, just I take the brokerage approach saying, hey, we actually work with multiple installers.
00:07:37
Speaker
So maybe you show up to these people.
00:07:39
Speaker
I've done this before.
00:07:40
Speaker
I've showed up to these people with three quotes in hand for solar.
00:07:43
Speaker
They have all three already.
00:07:45
Speaker
I write.
00:07:46
Speaker
I put lines on the middle of the page and just break it down, give them comparisons with all of them.
00:07:51
Speaker
So that's something that's worked with me.
00:07:52
Speaker
Number three, you got your lambs.
00:07:55
Speaker
Lambs are a, you know, you want to make them feel good.
00:07:58
Speaker
You want to get them down to an emotional level.
00:08:02
Speaker
They're your quieter people.
00:08:03
Speaker
They are people that are more likely to cancel.
00:08:06
Speaker
They're people that probably are just less sure of themselves.
00:08:09
Speaker
Okay.
00:08:10
Speaker
So they see themselves as personable, conversational, relationship focus.
00:08:15
Speaker
They're friendly and you want to build relationships with these people.
00:08:20
Speaker
You want to take time to build some rapport with them and just get them to like you.
00:08:25
Speaker
So they're happy when communicating.
00:08:27
Speaker
They are distractible, poor time managers.
00:08:31
Speaker
And they may over promise, agree to give you something they can actually deliver.
00:08:35
Speaker
So these people, you know, we're not being racist or anything here.
00:08:39
Speaker
But I'm thinking like if you're looking at a lot of the Hispanic people you sell to,
00:08:44
Speaker
A lot of these people are this type of people.
00:08:47
Speaker
They will promise things and maybe not, you know, they want to make you happy.
00:08:53
Speaker
They don't want to disappoint.
00:08:54
Speaker
They'll promise things.
00:08:55
Speaker
They'll act excited when maybe they're not to that level yet.
00:08:58
Speaker
So that's something you really want to make sure of.
00:09:00
Speaker
You want to get them to actually do what they're going to say and really verify these things.
00:09:06
Speaker
And some tools to use with them are using calibrated questions focused on implementation.
00:09:12
Speaker
And you really just want to connect with them on an emotional level because they want to please people.
00:09:18
Speaker
They're gentle and considerates.
00:09:20
Speaker
And what do sheep do?
00:09:21
Speaker
They follow, right?
00:09:22
Speaker
So if you can show them that this is a great decision, connect with them emotionally, reassure them, then they will follow.
00:09:28
Speaker
So that is your lamb personality.
00:09:30
Speaker
And last but not least, you got your tigers.
00:09:34
Speaker
Yeah, tiger.
00:09:35
Speaker
I looked at the picture.
00:09:37
Speaker
I've got notes on it.
00:09:38
Speaker
I see a little tiger from Winnie the Pooh.
00:09:40
Speaker
Wait a second.
00:09:41
Speaker
Is this tiger or tiger?
00:09:42
Speaker
So your tigers, these people are just driven by excitement.
00:09:48
Speaker
And according to the internet, they're tempest, calm, warm-hearted, yet fearsome, courageous in the face of danger, yet yielding in soft and mysterious, unexpected places.
00:09:59
Speaker
Tigers are very confident, perhaps too confident sometimes.
00:10:02
Speaker
Although they love adventures and are addicted to excitement, it is better not to challenge a tiger's confidence.
00:10:07
Speaker
So there's your description of a tiger.
00:10:09
Speaker
These people, my favorite thing to do is just get them high-fiving you.
00:10:13
Speaker
If you have not done the high-five after the credit check, this is super powerful, especially on these type of people.
00:10:19
Speaker
You get them excited.
00:10:20
Speaker
You give them a high-five.
00:10:21
Speaker
Hey, you just got approved.
00:10:22
Speaker
Congrats.
00:10:23
Speaker
High-five, high-five, high-five to your kids.
00:10:25
Speaker
And it really gets them going.
00:10:26
Speaker
They can get excited and then you want to connect with them before you go through all the facts and questions like, have you heard about what's going on?
00:10:34
Speaker
Get them curious.
00:10:35
Speaker
That's a great way to connect with these tigers.
00:10:37
Speaker
So just a crash course on these people.
00:10:39
Speaker
Again, we're not going to get super deep on them.
00:10:41
Speaker
And I am not the expert in this.
00:10:43
Speaker
I'm still learning.
00:10:44
Speaker
So I'm just sharing with you some brief, brief advice.
00:10:48
Speaker
training about these things.
00:10:50
Speaker
But what I would challenge you to do, go look these up on your own and start to identify them.
00:10:54
Speaker
This is something sometimes I forget to do, but as you go and analyze your appointments, your presentations that you made, and hopefully you're recording them, okay, as you go back and listen to your presentations, think to yourself, what type of person was this?
00:11:06
Speaker
Then you'll notice that as you go back and do that analysis, you'll start to recognize these people right off the bat.
00:11:12
Speaker
You don't even have to go analyze it.
00:11:14
Speaker
And when you recognize the personality type, you know how to sell to these people.
00:11:18
Speaker
So go do some research of your own.
00:11:20
Speaker
Would love to hear what other things help you in the personality types.
00:11:24
Speaker
Let me know and let me know if this is something you want us to dive deeper in.
00:11:27
Speaker
We can dive deeper into specific things, specific word tracks that will help.
00:11:31
Speaker
But for now, hopefully that got you excited to go do some investigation and start recognizing these personality types.
00:11:38
Speaker
Hope that's helpful.
00:11:39
Speaker
And next podcast, we're going to be having on Brian Leposki.
00:11:42
Speaker
He was originally scheduled to be a couple weeks back, but we had some technical difficulties.
00:11:47
Speaker
So Brian, we are releasing his podcast for the next

Upcoming Episode with Brian Leposki

00:11:51
Speaker

00:11:51
