Technical Challenges and Recording Decisions

00:00:50
Speaker
Well, right now there should be a recording light flashing. There is now. So do we just do 15 minutes of bullshit that was not recorded whatsoever? Give or take. I had us at i had us at six minutes not recording.
00:01:09
Speaker
but okay well that that' That's enough. Jake, we're not going to repeat ourselves. We did have some technical difficulties when Jake joined the show and we were just discussing his fine partnership with ah with Ryan Construction. Business is not going well and he doesn't want to talk about it. We were also congratulating AJ on his birthday, River Ridge, CPA, fine sponsor of the show. Jake, we'll dive right

Elite NFL Quarterbacks: Mahomes and Williams

00:01:35
Speaker
into it. I sent you over a couple of things. One is,
00:01:39
Speaker
just Just fantasy aside, the status of quarterbacks in the NFL, and I've actually been wanting to talk to you about this outside of fantasy football. There's such a huge gap between the the elite NFL quarterbacks and and not just backups, because we've seen a lot of backups come in and play this year, like just how bad the Cowboys are without Dak Prescott, for example. I mean, they're terrible with them too. so yeah let's doubt that Yeah, that's true, that's true. But like, I'm curious, is this a coaching thing? Like we've seen Caleb Williams as a rookie, like completely flop. And then we've seen Jayden Daniels at Washington potentially be an MVP candidate. Like why why did the scouting teams get it that wrong? Is this coaching? Is this is this the scheme that they're in?
00:02:35
Speaker
Is this just the luck? You're talking about just the young rookie guys or just across the league in general? I'd

Scouting Misjudgments and Rookie Challenges

00:02:41
Speaker
say across the league. like like It's a great question to pose. like If Patrick Mahomes had been drafted to the Bears like Caleb Williams just was, would Patrick Mahomes be Patrick Mahomes? right like yeah like Why are the scouting teams getting these quarterbacks so wrong? I'm curious from the Netherlands. Or the ones that do pan out.
00:02:59
Speaker
tin Like Mahomes, Brady, like the classic quarterbacks. They're these late round, late round guys a lot of times. Like what's, what's up with the QB situation? Well, I think a lot of it has to do with you take guys that.
00:03:16
Speaker
One, like you talk about the late round stuff, where you you you put guys in a position where they're coming to college, they got something to prove. They're they're coming in, there's whereas

Quarterback Development and Pressure

00:03:24
Speaker
your high profile you know guys coming out of college that are like, oh, you know first round draft picks.
00:03:33
Speaker
They kind of feel like they're on top of the fucking world. They come in. yeah they they're yeah they met They blew their way through college. They come in their rookie year thinking, oh, I'm just going to own this. Well, at every level you go up, every i mean the fucking speed, the amount of intellect you need, everything else like that, fucking changes drastically. Going from high school to college will it is one thing we're going from.
00:03:58
Speaker
a College team where you're playing against one guy on the other team Maybe that might be good enough to play the NFL to them playing against 11 of them all at once and trying to figure out what the fuck to do with that then you know, yeah, your your confidence gets shaken real fast and also, I feel like a lot of has to do with the way the NFL has a structured a lot of these deals now where you can bring your you bring these guys in and they're pretty much got a fucking start because you don't have any time to you haven't built for the future you are
00:04:34
Speaker
buying a guy

Rookie Challenges and Collective Bargaining Agreements

00:04:35
Speaker
that's like supposed to be your future and you don't run the fire and so that means that they've come down all these offenses terribly uh... defenses are becoming a little bit more tricky one way or the other but at the same time they're still in the same coverages and everything but you've got a quarterback who can't recognize them who doesn't know who's who's out there playing half-scared but trying to make sure that he didn't make a mistake is opposed to trying to win a ballgame So you get these younger guys that really just, I mean, unless they're like Patrick Mahomes who came in, just balls the wall and just playing kind of backyard football and making shit happen. You know, you're, you're behind the eight ball to start. You know, the days of, of bringing a guy in and letting him hold a clipboard for two to three years before you ever let him really play much are over.
00:05:25
Speaker
um You know, take fucking Titans, for example. They drafted Will Levis for some fucking reason, thinking that he was going to be some end-all be-all, even though he wasn't that good at that Kentucky to start with. And then you bring him over here, and you put him in this office, and you you give him A few players, not the best on time, but the most dumbed down, just simple offense that every defense in the league can cover. I mean, how do you expect to be successful? The reason why you talk about Patrick Mahoney's or the reason why he's successful is Andrew Reid does shit.
00:06:03
Speaker
all over the place they are there they might run the same place six times in a game but it's different people doing different things at the same at different times they're moving people right and left there showing that they're making the defense show their shit patreon's is far enough to be able to recognize it and then also he makes stupid underhand passes somehow for touchdowns a lot it's it really comes down to the way that the nfl has structured the collective bargaining agreement or else like that to where as much as as far as CAP goes, everything else like that, that these guys aren't developed. They're just brought in, thrown in the fire. Oh, wait, shit, you sank. We'll move on to the next guy. And you know it takes a good manager and a good head coach to make a good team, and there's not a lot of both of them running around.

Top Fantasy NFL Quarterbacks

00:06:53
Speaker
Yeah, that's incredible insight, Jake. I ah think a lot of people would like to listen to that on a bigger platform, honestly.
00:07:01
Speaker
But I'm curious on on your breakdown specifically of two fantasy relevant guys here, the two rookies, Caleb and jade Jayden Daniels, if you agree with my take on it, I think Jayden Daniels obviously finished playing in the SEC and went through some real growing pains, right? One characteristic that I always see playing out well is a guy who's been like battle tested.
00:07:26
Speaker
left Arizona State, locker room didn't like him, struggled year one at LSU, boom, Heisman run. Caleb is just kind of winging it, playing backyard football, kind of like you were discussing his whole career. But ultimately, better fit for Jaden Daniels. Obviously, ah I'm totally blanking on their coordinator now, ah who used to be the head coach for the Cardinals. Kingsbury. Kingsbury. But I just think the Bears coaching staff sucks. You put Caleb in Washington. I think he's doing pretty good and there was some chatter about that, right? Just because of of the fit from USC that one rebuilding year for our boy. I think there's a little bit to be said about that if you switch the guys up, but I think at the same time, I mean, Jay Daniels is on a hell of a team. I mean, he's not put in bad situations when he comes in the game. He's.
00:08:23
Speaker
He's got plenty of guys to throw the ball to pretty much constantly. And he's got a really good offensive coordinator who's putting him in good positions to make to to be successful. Whereas Caleb Williams on their hand is on a team that should probably be good, has got some players, but is still kind of trying to find their shit. And that's not really a great spot for a rookie guy to come into.
00:08:50
Speaker
You know, like, yeah, say you switch, I mean, you throw, you throw Caleb Williams on Washington. Yeah, I'm sure he's, I'm sure he's more successful than he is now. But what I'll say is, I think that Jay Dale's, he's just having a fucking year.

Jake's Date and Broadcasting Changes

00:09:05
Speaker
I mean, we see this. I mean, hell you're you're you saw it last year with, with Stroud. Now you're kind of seeing the sophomore slump out of him. I mean,
00:09:15
Speaker
it did i mean it happens you know the team's kind of start to play you started started you know they start to figure your your game out at that point in time and that's that i mean as it sits right now i mean i don't think it was really don't know about i think that he's been just thrown out there and it's been getting pressured to shit out of and i think he's kind of a little bit of like what i was saying about the dumbed out off and say if you watch them they're not doing much And I don't know if it's because they are, they don't think that he can figure out how to pick up the blitz, how he's supposed to, you know, or what he's supposed to check to, things like that. Like it's, it's not as, it's not as cut and dry. Whereas Jayden Daniels, it seems like they've got all these teams on their heels. So they're, they're the ones that are, you know, they're on offense. I mean, you know, best way to put it, but they're the ones kind of in the driver's seat on everything.
00:10:13
Speaker
Jake, do you think you could name the top five fantasy quarterbacks in the NFL this season so far? Shouldn't know. Give it a guess. Give it a go.
00:10:24
Speaker
ah Lamar's got to be up there. Number one, correct. now Yeah. Gosh, I'm blanking from there. Josh Allen's been down. Yeah, not so much. Number five. Okay, I was going to say I thought he'd be right. He was on the ropes on that one.
00:10:43
Speaker
Oh, Jayden Daniels. Actually number six, but very close to the top five. Yeah. He's right outside that top five. And and and this is part of ah the Jay Smoove conundrum every week is that he has the number sixth ranked quarterback and the number seventh ranked quarterback in Kyla Murray. Both on his squads who he's had to play quite the quite the game of roulette. Hell of a way to get eight wins. Yeah, he's got it right most of the time. me some but yeah more humble when you say it next time
00:11:14
Speaker
I'll give you a hint, another one of the guys is on your team. i the first my for ra is just oh inside jake's mind Let's just, actually this is a better interview question. Let's see if Jake can name his own team. not really ah Yeah, Hertz is number four.
00:11:33
Speaker
Top two. The only reason I say is because I've got that. and that You said, Kyle, on the other one. You all do know I cheat. I'm in the league, and sometimes I get them mixed up. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it happens. It happens. But yeah, Baker Mayfield and Joe Burrow ran out the top five. Speaking of cheating, how'd your how'd your hinge date go? How the fuck is that cheating?
00:11:58
Speaker
It just felt like a good segue. We were talking about getting mixed up. I figured you'd probably been on enough dates at this point to get them mixed up every now and then. Who are you? Taking a good long break, actually. That was the first one in a while, and it was all right. We were out way too late. Oh. Yeah. We can leave it there. We don't need to go any further.
00:12:24
Speaker
Well, no names are being mentioned here, Jake. We're just, just seeing if it went well or not. And, you know, yeah I'm talking to Andrew here. and my Well, there probably won't be a second, but it went well. All right. All right. So it was, she was, she was a streamer kind of like a, like a streaming defense. Like yeah and she she was a waiver pick and that's, yeah, that's for sure. I had a bye week and really needed a kicker.
00:12:51
Speaker
Yeah, you gotta, you gotta scoop someone up off the wire every now and then. Jake, another question

Brady vs. Romo in Broadcasting

00:12:57
Speaker
for you. No, I know we were, we were kind of joking around on on one group chat that I've been with you, but it might've been the league group chat. It sounds like the the Tennessee broadcasting crew for that, for the radio is, is starting to, to break up the band. Yeah. Have you actually thought about, have you actually thought about No. Jumping in the booth? No, pretty much absolutely not. One, I think I'd get canceled faster than... I'd get fired quicker than you could ever think of anyone getting fired. But the no, that's not it. I barely ever done radio shows, his interviews and stuff like that. It's not not for me. um
00:13:47
Speaker
yeah I can sit there and break down a game if me if me and you two are sorry sitting there and it's not going to be well received by radio edit. So no, also I think that you kind of have to have a little bit more experience than just being Pat Ryan's son to get that job.
00:14:06
Speaker
they're they're going to, they kind of pushed Bob out from what I can understand a little bit and I say pushed him out. he's He's toyed with retirement for years. And then Pat was pretty much kind of not really wanting to keep going forward either. And I think they're they're probably going to have a whole new slate of guys coming up soon.
00:14:30
Speaker
they're They're going more towards digital digital media stuff and anything else like that. and they're they're And they're getting some younger guys in and stuff like things like that. But no, it's nothing that um nothing I'm qualified for. Let's put it that way. Well, Jake, to your first part about being canceled, I've been reading some stuff with the way the recent election turned out that cancel culture could get canceled. It could end.
00:14:56
Speaker
And I've listened to a lot of really interesting podcasts that I won't promote on this medium, but just don't rule that out. You clearly know ball, Jake. You know ball, you can talk it till you're blue in the face. I think it would take you some time, the way Brady is finding out, to keep his thoughts a little more

Coaching Impacts and Broadcasting

00:15:21
Speaker
concise. It's a much harder job than it appears, right, than sitting around bullshitting with your buddies.
00:15:26
Speaker
But I do think you have the skill for it. And, you know, Brady jumping on the scene, he has not gotten rave reviews the way that Romo did. I'm curious on your take between those two guys and who you like better. You can even dive into their quarterback careers briefly. And do you think you could do the job better than either of them? Because the way that Brady has started, he's so bad. It could be a short, a short thing. I think Greg Olsen's better.
00:15:57
Speaker
Greg Olsen stuff listen to, but no, Romo is good because Romo's, he's polished. I mean, he, he he's very well spoken. He's.
00:16:08
Speaker
he's to the point but he also he did he he's got away from that you do all that stuff there for the very first or is called he was called plays before they were snapped and as they went by oh it's you know it's real cool and everything it's like yeah okay but you know three weeks later said okay dude just stop stop calling what's going on and then uh... but he's he's way more insightful uh... i think then most of these guys that do this and I do like seeing guys who have played the position and or who have played, you know, a good bit of football getting these jobs. Now, Brady. I've been a Brady fan my entire life, so I mean, as far as you want to talk about, like, who do I like better on the field where, like, I'm going to tell you Brady, but Brady's kind of a dweeb. I mean, he just he is. He's always he's been a football nerd forever and it's it's hard to work some of that football nerd stuff out. You know, he's
00:17:08
Speaker
Yeah, ah but I really hope that he hears this. I guess what, how many how many listeners do we have these days? ah We got listeners all over the globe. i think I think there's something important to highlight here and it's a correlation I've been meaning to hit on Jake. So we talk about Jane Daniels ending up in a Kingsbury offense, right? And I think there's okay there's there's some comparison here. it It all comes full circle and it always does on Stone by Cornbread.

Broadcasting Football Challenges

00:17:35
Speaker
You talk about the Bears offensive coordinator, which I believe he was, he was just let go. His name is Shane Waldron. So now Caleb Williams, I don't even know if they promoted anyone ah to to be the Bears offensive coordinator. That's Caleb Williams situation. Tom Brady landed Kevin Burkhardt, which.
00:17:55
Speaker
Everyone kind of knows Kevin Burkhardt. You've seen him on Fox, but he's no, he's no Jim Nance. No, no. He's no Jim Nance. And that's what Tony had. and And so could you make the correlation with Jaden and Cliff Kingsbury to maybe Jim Nance and Tony Romo? ah Tony had this guy coming in and then they throw Brady to Kevin Burkhardt, which like, I don't know how many masters Kevin Burkhardt's done, but I'm pretty sure it's zero.
00:18:21
Speaker
Well, now I see what you're let's see what you're getting at there. i I mean, I can say that know your your play-by-play guy, is he does kind of set the tone for the whole entire broadcast. I mean, I just know that just growing up, listen to Pat and Mike.
00:18:40
Speaker
Mike knew what to do, what to say, and when to shut up and let Pat talk. And that's kind of a guess, but at the same time, like, you gotta know what to say when it's your time. And, you know, I mean, Brady's doing a pretty decent job. It's not, I mean, you gotta realize, like, it's, you know, they're used to playing in front of millions of people on a Sunday, not talking in front of them.
00:19:06
Speaker
I mean, that's an incredibly different different deal. um yeah know there he Both of these guys that we're talking about have extreme knowledge of football. It's how well you relay it to the mass audience who really have time done to know what the hell they're watching. so Yeah, commercials.
00:19:30
Speaker
Yeah. So I mean, it's, you know, you got, you know, you got your, you know, armchair quarterbacks and you got everyone else watching this

Fantasy Football Standings and Rivalries

00:19:36
Speaker
stuff. And, you know, it's really easy to pick someone apart, but it's also be really fucking hard to go out there and do it yourself. Yeah. Kind of to circle back to another thing, Jake and tie things in a circle here.
00:19:53
Speaker
You know, Pat was lucky enough to start his career in an era where canceled culture was dead, which means it can die again. And he's a notably survived the foreigner comment. And no I'm curious, on what are you talking about?
00:20:13
Speaker
Had something to do with kickers and the game being on the line. We don't have to play it on the podcast here. I don't even remember hearing what you're talking about. I'll just put it this way. I felt the exact same way this past weekend when my entire family was in town and I watched Yung Oku miss three kicks to lose my matchup against AJ. Happy birthday, by the way, AJ.
00:20:39
Speaker
you he's completely american lazy cu Yeah. Yeah. Anyways. Uh, let's just say I shared that sentiment with Pat, you know, it really is a shame that it all came down to that and CD lamb getting the sun in his eyes, which apparently Mike McCarthy and his press conference.
00:20:57
Speaker
was afforded a sunshade. I know I sent a picture out to you guys earlier. I thought it was a pretty good summation of the Cowboys season. Jake, question I wanted to ask you. I'd like to say that wasn't, that was not a sunshade, but we'll go on. You've been around the league. You spent some time I've seen on the Jets' sideline or in a Jets luxury suite. If you could play a quarterback for, yeah, well, if you could play a quarterback for any NFL team, just the current coaching staff, the current facilities, the current city,
00:21:26
Speaker
What would you pick? Oh, shit. Oh, that's current coach. I mean, I would have to do the Rams. I Yeah, I like that a lot. Rams are fun, man. And I mean, you know, living in living in L.A. for a while and.
00:21:50
Speaker
Yeah, you have all sorts of weapons on the field and yeah, Sean McVeigh is, uh, he's one of my favorite, you know, newer-ish coaches. I guess he's not that new anymore, but hell, you know, playing for a guy who's.
00:22:07
Speaker
shit He's he's done a lot with not a lot of time either. So he's that that would be a fun one. I've i've been a fan of watch. I've watched a lot of their games this year. Stafford's been i in my opinion, except for this last Thursday night game ah has been really on on point too. So yeah, it's that they I feel like that would be a fun fun team to play for.
00:22:31
Speaker
Yeah, and it's management that is willing to mortgage the future and trade a bunch of first round draft picks, which a quarterback has to love, right? I mean, they could go grab a tackle. They could go get DeAndre Hopkins at the deadline. They're willing to ah risk it all. That's got to be a fun thing as a quarterback to know.
00:22:50
Speaker
Well, I mean, it that seems like they're it seems like they're they're ready to deal, they're ready to, you know, like you said, you know, risk, they low risk for reward, which is the gambler in me likes that.
00:23:06
Speaker
Yeah, I guess a a a Rams helmet would look great on you, Jake, and I could definitely see you leading a Sean McVeigh offense. Pretty crazy, he became head coach when he was 30 years old. That actually blows my mind. now that Yeah, he's no longer the longest coach in the NFL. He's like third youngest now.
00:23:24
Speaker
Yeah, the the the youngest coach in the NFL is is now actually the the Seahawks head coach who I believe um is no longer Pete

Fantasy Football Strategy and Dynamics

00:23:35
Speaker
Carroll. that That wouldn't make any sense. It's Mike McDonald. But yeah, Mike McDonald, 37 years old. Sean McVay's 38 now, which is pretty crazy. So you're wearing a Rams jersey. You're wearing a Rams helmet. ah Mike, not Mike. Sean McVay's talking to you in the helmet. You got two receivers.
00:23:52
Speaker
you're talking to the You're talking to the front office. they're willing to They're willing to open up the purse strings. And you get two receivers to bring in. You got you got the entire NFL at your disposal. Who are your two guys that you're bringing in? Jefferson's the first one. Right off the top. He's as good as advertised.
00:24:20
Speaker
Uh, then I think you gotta go kind of old head and go Mike Evans. Hmm. Cause if you're the Rams, you look at him there, you got Cooper coming, got puin niooa you She got two kind of more interior guys more than anything else like that. You need some outside threads. Wow. That would be a foursome of receivers. Puka, cup, Jefferson, Mike Evans. Wow.
00:24:47
Speaker
Sean McVey offense. I like it. I like it. Yeah, too too bad that and too bad no one salary cap could ever withstand that. Yeah, yeah it would be it would be a little bit of a stretch. you know Maybe Jerry Jones could pull it off, but he instead paid all his money to Dak Prescott who just ripped his hamstring off the bone and had a season-ending surgery. I wonder how they're going to look with a nice scar down the middle of it.
00:25:16
Speaker
that's That's a good question. And will he do more sleep number commercials over the off season while he ah he rests up? That's a good question to ask. Jake, we've talked a little bit about the standings. ah you know There's a lot of teams, six teams in either five and five or four and six. There's three teams at four and six, three teams at five and five. The bandwagon or the rhino and the bomb squad are in front of us, and you and I play this week. Now, I know that that your mind can get caught between you know different fantasy players and leagues. Let's talk a little bit about how you see this season playing out. We have three weeks left in the regular season of fantasy. Anything can happen. The bandwagon is in a playoff spot right now. He could technically end up in the shame offs.
00:26:03
Speaker
you we so we got we got all under to play on yearly i'm I'm quitting a message from Andrew just this morning, so that was that was a treat. That was great, especially after the way when you all the opposition like he Just barely barely lost and all of a sudden the the sky is falling and it's it's time to call it a day. I'm I'm done boys.
00:26:31
Speaker
I'm ah i'm you know number four in the league, but you know what? Fuck it. you know that That was an all-time ball game call right there. Well, a ats rivalry a deep rivalry will do that to a man. yeah It will. It feels different when we when we lose to Florida. you know it's just It's gross. You just feel disgusting. James, this is more a question for you. Do you feel like Andrew's bandwagon nature and and then your loyalty, but and whether it's Vols versus Dogs or or even his his NBA fandom. you He's a big Celtics fan, apparently.
00:27:20
Speaker
is is that what you know he's a chiefs fan apparently like is that what Is that what you think fuels the rivalry? Because I know you're such a loyal vol. A lot of your your fanhood is built on passion and loyalty. Does that does that add a little juice to the to the fire that already rages?
00:27:40
Speaker
It absolutely does. Andrew and I are just not a culture fit. We are good friends. We're great friends. One of my favorite guys to play golf with and and our guests tonight as well. But our values just don't align, even if we have common interests. And I'll be the first to admit I've got thin skin. So he gets under my skin at a different level and that fuels it back.
00:28:06
Speaker
But I love engaging with every League member, which is why we stir the pot. And Andrew and I have walked horns for, for years now. And to hand him that loss ahead of the Georgia game, who knows if Nico's actually going to play or not. Gaston Moore's new nickname is gas pipe. What a fucking legend that guy is. I think we could still beat him with that guy. So.
00:28:31
Speaker
It could just be a bender of downness for the wagoner. And I'm hoping that it is. So Andrew, I know you're listening friend friend of the pod, maybe we can have you on to close the year out and see if you're going to stay in the league or not. Yeah, we won't bring Bobby on this time. We realized that did not work out super well last time.
00:28:53
Speaker
The commissioner, the commissioner is an interesting one. He's now sitting at five and five and he really perked up on the group chat. He was dead silent until he escaped the bottom four. A little bit of trash talk this past week. I don't know if you guys picked up on that, but the commissioner seems to be coming out of his hole. Yeah. He seemed like he just filmed himself a little bit. I didn't know what to make of it. I loved it. I thought it was great. A confident audience. I need more, more mommy.
00:29:21
Speaker
It's scary. Confident bomb is scary. Yeah. Over this past week, Bobby starts spitting facts and like, actually, uh, you act, you want to refute him, but like there's, you realize like, I don't know. He's already thought this one through. He likes to be in a place of safety and, and Jamar chase putting up 44.4 points on a Thursday night. We'll do that to a man. Like that's, that's, that is a safety net if I've ever seen one.
00:29:48
Speaker
You go into the weekend up 44 to nothing. You feel, you feel pretty good. You feel pretty good about your team. But granted he, I didn't actually go to the weekend up 44 nothing. Cause he also played against Lamar Jackson, but regardless, Bommie takes down Larry. Bommie now finds himself in irrelevance. The Rhino is in irrelevance. The bandwagoner is holding onto a playoff spot. And then there's a bunch of hungry wolves at four and six Jake.
00:30:16
Speaker
While we got you, we gotta do college game day, celebrity guest picker style, week 11 preview.

Week 11 Fantasy Predictions: Analysis

00:30:25
Speaker
Hold on, let me play a little. This is week 11 preview brought to you by Ryan Construction for all of your construction needs. If you need a kitchen remodeled, he might be able to do it.

unless the city is giving him hell. Also, shout out to our sponsor, River Ridge CPA, who just had their owner celebrate a birthday with offices in Knoxville and Nashville. See them at RiverRidgeCPA.com. Joining the show to give some picks for week 11, we have none other than a former collegiate quarterback and professional quarterback, Jake Ryan. Jake Ryan is joining us from his bar at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. Jake, we are thrilled to have you as our picker this week. We're going to go through the matchups. We want to hear your pick and any analysis you can offer us, starting off with our our first matchup of Rob, the Amish, at 1-9, sitting in 10th place against Larry, a team who has you no name.
00:31:38
Speaker
This is a juggernaut of this season. A team that seemingly locked up a playoff spot against a team that has been eliminated. Current projections are Rob with 81 and Larry with one Oh seven. How do you see this one going? I mean, I got a lane with the heavy favorite on this one. Uh, starting man.
00:32:00
Speaker
Car, that's that's that's that's a tough start right there. I see McCaffrey's back to them, he uses as much. And Larry's team is just packed full of fucking killers. So i yeah, don't i don't I don't see this one going the honest way. What would you say to Rob? He's he's an avid listener to the pod. Anything to encourage him or or just give him a a little bit of hope here? Man, fucking get healthy. Just play for the end. That's all I got for you.
00:32:29
Speaker
Are you referring to Rob, the person or Rob's fantasy team? Probably, probably I'm gonna say his fantasy team. Okay, because apparently the boots off. So Jake, next matchup but we got for you to pick tonight. The four and six old men who find themselves at ninth in the standings been getting absolutely shelved this year. First, the bandwagoner who is on a depression heater. Who do you who do you like here? It doesn't appear it's going to be a super high scoring matchup.
00:32:59
Speaker
um I was preaching to buy Cougar stock and then he came out with a miraculous dirtbag win like myself. Andrew, do you see the the ah losses continuing to pile up?
00:33:16
Speaker
i kind i kind of like ah I kind of like the old man pulling the upset on this one. I'm just looking through matchups right here. I mean, Miami has decided to start playing football again. ah Justin Herbert is, oh, Tennessee, that could be a fucking shootout. That might be fun.
00:33:36
Speaker
ah Tangella Dallas, oh, Houston Dallas, that could that could get out of hand. i Looking over here, Metcalf, Seattle, and San san Francisco, that's that and might not bode too well. Oh, Camara and Cleveland, though. and Aaron Rodgers just continues to just fucking take L after L after L up there. so I'm going to go with the old men pulling the upset on this one. you know It's funny, like with a bandwagoner.
00:34:09
Speaker
We're, we're younger than Aaron Rodgers. You know, I, I, I'm at the age now where I'm like, all these kids are out there playing. And like, every time I see Rogers, I'm like, man, like, what would my, what would my body be like in four years if I was taking hits from 23 year old, 400 pound lineman?

Aaron Rodgers: Career and Personal Insights

00:34:28
Speaker
Jake could probably speak to this better than, than I could.
00:34:31
Speaker
ah But oh you know I have taken a beer bottle of the head. like what
00:34:38
Speaker
you know What's your take on this? Is the 40-year-old Roger's body that's doing ayahuasca and going to silent retreats, is he really still fit for this? I don't think his body has anything to do with it. I think his give a fuck is broken.
00:34:57
Speaker
just watching him up close and personal. and We went over for the Titans Jets game. It looked like he didn't give a shit whether he was on that field or not. I think that's part of the problem. I mean, he's, you know, when he was at Green Bay and it was, you know, they had they had all their winning seasons and everything else like that. Like he, and he's always kind of played a little laissez-faire, but now it's very much like, he's kind of checked the fuck out, it seems like.
00:35:27
Speaker
you know It's been it's been ah rumored and and confirmed that he's currently dating Mallory Edens, who is the daughter of the Milwaukee Bucks co-owner, Wes Edens. She's okay. I'd say she's about a seven. but like How do you go from Olivia Munn to this? That's what I'm saying. and I feel like maybe, why is he gold digging? i mean I mean, Rogers is He's good to go. He's not gold digging. that Those are the people in his circle. That's what you had to realize. like as Those are the people he's meeting. he's not He's not going to go find him a girl at Whole Foods.
00:36:07
Speaker
i mean that should ah's like that Actually, it's gonna be ah actually yeah he would he that is exactly where Aaron Rodgers would find a girl No, I think about it. I would be here Rogers met this girl on Raya And you know, he gonna Raya you have to be invited to be on Raya, which is how that shit works Is that an app? Yeah, it's a dating app for the rich and famous So you got your application in?
00:36:34
Speaker
You can't put an application. Someone's got to send it to you and Okay, Blake. I think seven is a bit harsh and as we all know Sometimes if the the ladies fun to hang out with maybe she's got similar ayahuasca interest I think that's more of what mr. Rogers is going after he's tried the ah the ditzy ones and the fun ones maybe he's just trying to Find a darkness retreat lady. A darkness retreat doesn't sound so bad with her. I mean, Danica Patrick. Okay. He goes from NASCAR driver. God, I forgot. Yeah. He did a Danica Patrick for like three years. And then Shailene Woodley, who's like, he was engaged to, and she was like, you know, hippy dippy girl. You'd meet at Whole Foods and, and Beverly Hills. And then.
00:37:29
Speaker
Olivia mine. Oh my God. And now we're at, we're at the bucks owner's daughter. Like, like what's next Ivanka,
00:37:43
Speaker
not a bad pick. Hey, you know what? He's a, we know she's not getting laid. No way. You never know. That's true. That's true. Don has made, they made, they made pills for that. That's true.
00:37:57
Speaker
thank you That got derailed in the best way possible. Yes, it really did. Jake, onto to our next matchup. The newly confident bomb squad versus the West Hillbillies, proudly preserved by pilot. this um tossup right here This is very nice. Can we get your thoughts here?
00:38:22
Speaker
i All right, let's see. So drunk as much as it hates me to, or it pains me to say it, I'm i'm kind of feeling Will's team on this. I think Chase is going to have a little hangover week. My home's just, it they Kansas City is great. He's great in Kansas City, but they do not they They win games like they're ugly and he He puts up yardage and he does what he needs to do to win the game like, you know when you're when you're winning on a block field goal on a 14-16 game like You're not throwing a ton of points. Whereas Joe burrow I think is gonna come out fucking guns firing against against LA
00:39:09
Speaker
Yeah, Jonathan Taylor. Yeah, no, I'm i'm and i'm gonna fade fadin Bomb Squad on this one. I think he falls. Bomb Squad goes down. Jake, quick question for you on this matchup. Breaking news. It's not Big J, but we'll play it. We'll play it anyways.
00:39:28
Speaker
Anthony Richardson is back as the starting quarterback. After announcing two weeks ago that Joe Flacco would be the starter for the remainder of the season, the c Colts have now come out today and announced that Anthony Richardson is now the starter. Back to young quarterbacks that just suck. ah How does this affect Jonathan Taylor? i she He'll probably see the ball more.
00:39:51
Speaker
um I mean, you got Flacco who's... Honestly, I've never been a Flacco fan, but just look at the fucking record. I mean, the guy, he balls everywhere. ah he's had say He's had some downtime down times, down years here and there, but so it's every quarterback we ever watched, but he's a super old winning guy and you're gonna take him out to put back in Anthony Richardson? What the fuck are you doing?
00:40:21
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, the age range for starting quarterbacks is so wild. Like we have a lot of starting quarterbacks. We talk about, we talk about Bryce Young, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nicks, Trevor Lawrence, Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, Levis. I know you're not a huge fan of Levis. hurt Herbert's still pretty young.
00:40:46
Speaker
yeah And these guys are all in their 20s. Most of the ones you just said are are like sub 28 years old. twenty I think Mahomes is still 28. Josh Allen's still in his 20s, 28. I think Goff and Baker are almost 30. And then our age is totally neglected in the NFL. Like the mid 30s guy.
00:41:08
Speaker
is totally neglected. People want to jump to the late thirties for some reason. Cousins, Stafford, Rogers. Yeah, for us, is that all those guys that your're you're your're talking about now are? Well, I mean, but Stafford's, yeah, Stafford's 36, isn't he? Yeah. Curco, Curco's 37. You want to know you want know why, our well, I don't really want it.
00:41:35
Speaker
but you wonder why people our age are like neglected as far as NFL goes is because the year that we graduated college is the year that the collective bargaining agreement went into effect.

Quarterback Age Dynamics in NFL

00:41:49
Speaker
ah Up until that time, every single or pretty much every year there was somewhere between 22 and 35 quarterbacks either taking the draft or signed free agency.
00:42:04
Speaker
For instance, the year that I came out, there were 13 guys signed. There were 13 guys signed, whether or not that was free agency. There was only seven drafted.
00:42:16
Speaker
uh, or maybe eight, uh, drafted that year. And it, that, that perceived for the next two or three years after that, because, uh, people had their guys they were riding with and they did not have the cap space or the, uh, the time to be able to develop people. And so they rode with who they had. Cause if you remember when we were in our early twenties, everybody had a franchise quarterback that you knew their name.
00:42:46
Speaker
Not everybody, but at least half the league. You know, you're talking about guys like Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, you know, all these, these people that they were they were established as this is the quarterback of our franchise. And so we're going to work. We have a backup. Most people during that time wrote with two quarterbacks.
00:43:08
Speaker
That was all they did. They had two guys. They did. And if they what if the starter went down, they wouldn't pick someone up who was an older veteran who was sitting on the couch somewhere. So that's why our demographic is is under served right now, you could say, is because there weren't any of us ever like playing. I mean, you think about Tyler Bray.
00:43:31
Speaker
he was one of the He was one of those crew. He hung around the league for six or seven years, and I don't think he's selling mortgages or something. You can make good money selling mortgages. I think he made plenty of money doing otherwise. so Next matchup, we got the smooth moves versus the white rhino. Smooth moves at eight and two. White rhino on a little bit of a skid here. ah The norm. Bitch.
00:43:57
Speaker
Yeah. I love this QB matchup. This is a fun QB matchup. We got Jayden Daniels versus Russell Wilson. Dude, Russell has decided to start playing some ball. um Foo, A-chain, damn, Jayden is a fucking stat you are. First place in the league. It's been a good lineup this year. I think it was a good draft. Didn't think I went very much.
00:44:24
Speaker
Almost St. Brown, Higgins, looking at the other side. o You know, i'll I'll stick with the stick with your co-host here, Blake. I think, I think he's going to take this one, but that, if I'm on St. Brown keeps doing what he's doing, he may be in for a little bit of trouble there, bud. Yeah, it was a very tough decision for me. I i wanted a mon rah. I was about to take the jersey.
00:44:52
Speaker
and changed my mind and took Jefferson. And you can argue, I think- You didn't fuck off. You didn't fuck off. I think Amon Rahm might be having a better year, but it's close. Yeah, no, I mean, they both have like the basically the same upside. I would agree. Felt like a lot of mouths to feed and I like in Detroit and I believe in the Vikings offense and their scheme in general. I think it works with bad quarterbacks.
00:45:22
Speaker
so I liked i like the upside with Darnold. Yeah, no. Yeah. He's got Nico coming back this week. I think the Texans were exposed.
00:45:35
Speaker
without Nico on the field. I think tank Dell's a great receiver. I think, I think he had a really poor game on Sunday night.

Jake's Fantasy Team Insights

00:45:41
Speaker
Nico's coming back this week. Nico's coming back, but he's got that Q next to his name. He's also got T Higgins potentially coming back, which you have to think Jamar Chase is going to be getting a lot of double coverage after his 44.4 burger.
00:45:54
Speaker
t i face cat of like think I don't think the 44.4 burger has anything to do with whether or not you fucking double Jamar Chase. I think that's been established forever. he just You don't think NFL D coordinators are playing fantasy football and one of them got absolutely scarred by Jamar's 44.4 burger. Whoever the whoever the charger's D coordinator is was playing against Jay's. He's like, we're going to triple him.
00:46:22
Speaker
i kar I can guarantee you there's not a single D coordinator in the league who gives a shit about fantasy football. yeah That's probably a really good point. So I think we should both probably recuse ourselves from this last matchup. We got the Cats versus the Chef. Oh, I'm going to beat the shit out of you.
00:46:43
Speaker
yeah I mean, you threw up 65, and i'm I'm on a little bit of a streak right now. Yeah, I love a slow start of 10 weeks into the season. James, I want to give this one to you. Even though we got our celebrity picker here, Herb Street always recuses himself from the game that he's calling. I don't know if you guys have noticed that, but if Herb Street's doing game day, he will you will say, hey, not my pick to make. I got to fly and call this game later.
00:47:10
Speaker
By the way, RIP Kurt, his dog. second Can week we leave that one alone? yeah that' that but We have to acknowledge it. It was a really sad video. We have to acknowledge it too. We joke around a lot, but Andrew, we we did want to pour one out for Louie. I know you're listening. He was an awesome dog and in all seriousness, he will be very, very missed. that is That is the seriousness of and this is a serious system by corporate gets, unless of course, no, that's as serious as we get James, uh, call this game. How are you bringing this down? By far my favorite matchup of the week, uh, electric quarterback matchup, electric Thursday night matchup. I'll be watching that closely.
00:47:59
Speaker
You know, we got hurts going against the Washington defense. I feel like they've been overperforming for the amount of talent they have most of the year. I think they went and grabbed someone at the trade deadline for corner. Not sure if it's going to help that much. It's for you, Blake, it's very clearly going to come down to your receivers. I see your your top three guys, Allen Henry Hall, having good games.
00:48:26
Speaker
Smith is such a boomer bus guy. I hope Scary Terry bounces back for Jaden Daniels sake. I think CD lamb is about to start throwing fits and throwing in the towel. That's going to be the most frustrating decision for you to make the rest of the year, Blake, because the upside's gone, I think. And Houston's got good corners. Stingly, I forget the other guy's name. I picked him up this week.
00:48:52
Speaker
I think the Cowboys are going to mail it in. I think they might start Trey Lance and just say, screw it. what's What's the point of winning for the Cowboys the rest of the year? And I love Jake's team. Big play, Pickens, one of my favorite guys to watch on Red Zone. Jake, the reason why I see Blake winning this matchup, Jackson Smith and Jacobi Myers, that's tough to look at those two.
00:49:18
Speaker
I think Blake's got a little bit more balance overall in a higher floor for his top three guys. And it's going to come down. You're just going to go ahead and discount Bijon real fast, huh? Well, when he's playing against Derek Henry, it's just a ah net even. And I see Alan at all outscoring Jones and Hurts. It's going to be a narrow victory for the Cats. All right, we'll see.
00:49:45
Speaker
i think i yeah i' glad again I don't enjoy your, I don't enjoy your insight. Yeah. Well, I think we should you get Jake the floor. You don't have to actually recuse yourself. I'd love to hear your take on your team this year and, and have you worn the jersey? Have you tried the mustard? He's absolutely tearing it up. I've worn the hat. I've tried the mustard. I've not won the jersey.

Week 11 Predictions Conclusion

00:50:07
Speaker
No, no time i so my my team in general has, they they've given me a little bit of hope the last ah last number. Yeah, I had a week there where it really wouldn't have mattered, but I died we forgot to check my lineup day of and I ran the Larry Buzzsaw, but I still threw up a hundred. ah Even if I had subbed in Ekler like I needed to, it wouldn't have mattered. I mean, I still still lost but i still would have lost by almost 20. But even with a like that, they're giving me some hope. But at the same time, I am i'm as deep as a puddle right now. um I have no bench flares. i have not Sam LaPorta has been the vein of my existence.
00:50:55
Speaker
because I cannot ever tell if I need to play him or not, and this last week I didn't. Like, he still won, and he throws up almost 13. Biggest game he's had all year, ah and I'm kind of waver picking on on a number of receiver stuff just to try to fill the spots. You talk about Myers, he's been on a little bit of a tear lately. you can You can sit there and tell me, you know, oh, he's obsessed, but I think he's He's a pretty solid start. But other than that, no, I've had a lot of, a lot of injuries over the year that I've kind of, I mean, just got Puka back. That was big, but then lost Zach Moss. Um, I mean, I've had some of my IR spot pretty much all year long. It's been kind of, kind of tough to build a team, especially now that our, our waivers are so picked over that on a given basis, you really, there's maybe one guy per week. Maybe that's where we're starting.
00:51:56
Speaker
Yeah. No mention of Brandon Aubrey though, who is your, I think your top scorer for the year. He's pretty damn close. They like to kick field goals down there. I know that much. Yeah. So Brandon Aubrey is averaging 11.3 points per game. i'm I'm more worried about Aubrey on Monday night than than anyone. It's the worst.
00:52:22
Speaker
It's the worst, there's no lead that will be safe going into Monday night with Aubrey's or Kicker. Meanwhile, I had to drop my a small dicked Kicker coup, not Dicker the Kicker, but yes. Why'd you have to drop them? Principle? Because, because, but he like,
00:52:48
Speaker
The Falcons don't have the ball. So that's why I had to drop him because the Falcons should have dropped his ass. Do you know that the young, young way coup is the last ranked kicker in the NFL in terms of accuracy this year. And he's missed more kicks than any active NFL kicker. And there have been kickers that have been cut for way less yet. They continue to roll him out in a dynamic offense with Bijon Robinson, Kirk cousins, Drake, London, and And they're scared to kick now when they do give him a 50 yarder, they know he's going to miss it. He's got this weird lineup where he lines up direct. Anyways, young way. Enjoy the waiver wire. You bitch. I will just say this really quickly, really quickly. It's just got this bangs, man. No hate on them too hard. CD lamb.
00:53:36
Speaker
CD lamb could be on the waiver wire. My first round draft. Are they, are are they, are they playing at home this week? I don't even know if yeah ESPN will let them drop me. Yes. They're playing at home against the Texans. It's a, it's a, it's a Texas matchup. They'd count boys versus Texans. They'd never have some curtains up for him. So we're going to go into Monday night with our matchup undecided Jake, and it's going to come down to CD lamb getting thrown passes to him by who some guy named Cooper.
00:54:05
Speaker
or or maybe maybe some guy named, they just picked up another guy off the off the waivers. And then we got we got love. No, not love, I'm sorry. Who else do the Cowboys have a quarterback? Fucked at mine though.
00:54:22
Speaker
The Cowboys depth chart is hilarious. I haven't paid attention to the Cowboys. Trey Lance, Trey Lance, and everyone forget about Trey Lance. Trey Lance is still there. Yeah, James said earlier that he thinks they're just going to say, fuck it, let's keep playing them. What's the point of winning? The only good news. Just tank, but the quarterback class is not robust.

Podcast Wrap-Up and Gratitude

00:54:45
Speaker
So at one point, we thought Carson Beck was going number one.
00:54:50
Speaker
Yeah. Well, yeah the sun, the sun is going to be down by, uh, by Sunday night football when, when Carrie Underwood sings her song. Uh, and, and that's really good news for, for CD land because he won't be able to be, uh, blinded by the light.
00:55:13
Speaker
Jake, we really appreciate you joining the show. was That was really cute right there. Yeah. You know, sometimes, sometimes we have, we have cute music. James, I, uh, I'm curious going into this weekend, if you have anything to say to Andrew. To Andrew, not much. Uh, I will save my energy for Saturday. I'm still very nervous about the status of Nico, but also at the same time, uh, thrilled with the idea that we could have gas pipe out there and just be an electric factory, just kind of.
00:55:49
Speaker
giving them the Stetson Bennett treatment would be a cool story in general, easy to root for. I'm on the Vols plus nine. I have no idea what the line's at now. It's just, it's the perfect number. It's stupid bet, but it's going to be fun. And guys, we got a chance. We got a chance. And I don't think George is that great. If we can pick off Carson Beck, how many times Jake, do we win the game?
00:56:19
Speaker
Uh, he's looked real shaky lately. I think, I think we get a couple of turnovers, whether or not it's fumble or pick and pressure the shit out of him. I mean, Dave, Georgia's looked very human this year. I mean, you know, you look at Ole Miss now, Ole Miss, I think it's been undervalued pretty much all year. They've had some, they haven't What, two bad, two losses that they probably shouldn't have and or s they shouldn't have. Two losses that have got them where they're at, but they are a top five offense all day long and that defense started to play and Carson Beckton liked much of it. I can tell you that right now. I mean, a team that, you know, you look at that Kentucky team,
00:57:05
Speaker
They what they they were beat him by a touchdown or something. I mean, they played a lot of really close games. So I mean, defensively, I think if we can, we can hold them in or, you know, keep them within reach offensively, I think we can take care of it.
00:57:22
Speaker
Line has moved to 10. Weather forecast is 56 degrees in clear skies with mild winds out of the Northwest. Tennessee plus 10 is a fucking lock. It's a lock. You've heard it here first. Thank you, Celebrity Picker. We had to get that bonus game in.
00:57:43
Speaker
Jake, thanks thanks for spending your evening talking to James and I and the rest of the league. I know you could have done other things. If you hadn't have joined this podcast, we'll leave you with this. what What would you have done tonight? Oh, I would be in bed right now. That's pretty much how this night was going.
00:58:03
Speaker
ah I got the the daughter bathed and down for down for her sleep, and I was probably surely thereafter. ah so this is This is much more pleasant, ah and I'm sure I've offended someone around here today. so ah One way or the other, this is this is worth it. Happy to hear that, Jake, and maybe crack another Bud Light for the boys tonight.
00:58:31
Speaker
That's that may be a rough Thursday morning, but all right, maybe
