Introduction

00:00:14
Speaker
Hey, Cavs fans. Welcome to another episode of the Cavs Pick and Roll Podcast, the podcast for diehard Cavs fans. I'm Corey and I am here with Alex. How are you tonight, sir? Hey, I'm doing well. I just had three margaritas and a cup of coffee, so I am ready to go. I'm expecting some quality shit out of you on this episode.
00:00:38
Speaker
Well, we got some calves to talk about. We do, we do. And the first area I want to start with, Alex, is a very important number in Cleveland, in Cleveland history, really. It's a number 23.
00:00:51
Speaker
No, I'm not talking about LeBron or the fact that he's changing his number from 23 to number six. I'm talking about 23.

Cost of Watching Cavs and Indians

00:00:58
Speaker
That's how much money it's going to cost you a month to watch the Cavs and Indians with the Ballet Sports app as far as what's being reported. Remember in the last episode, we were talking about that, like, oh, I wonder what's going to happen. And I wonder if it's going to be affordable. And if I wonder if I can watch Cavs games legally next year,
00:01:14
Speaker
No, it doesn't seem like that's gonna happen. I'm trying to remember, what did we say? Did we say $9 a month or $7 a month? Yeah, I mean. That's what we were hoping for. Right, I think 11 bucks was kind of my max. It's like, dude, I'm not paying more than what Netflix and Disney Plus cost together. Like, come on, 23 bucks, are you kidding me? I really hope that isn't what it ends up being, because that's pretty damn disappointing. Yeah, I was just gonna say, like, where did this news come from?
00:01:42
Speaker
It actually was reported, started to be reported a couple of days ago. And then I happened to just see an article on Cleveland.com today talking about it, you know, kind of spinning it off as, would you be willing to pay $23 to watch your Cavaliers and Indians? And, you know, a lot of responses on social media were hell to the no. Well, that's good.
00:02:03
Speaker
Yeah, hopefully it scares them off. I don't know. It just kind of sucks. I was disappointed when I saw that. People need to vote with their dollar and not to subscribe for that crazy amount. Yeah, for sure. For sure. I know you and I won't and a lot of Cavs fans won't either. That's just too much money.
00:02:21
Speaker
That was the first thing. The other thing, Alex, is the draft lotto is rapidly approaching. When is that happening again?

NBA Draft Lottery Predictions

00:02:30
Speaker
Yeah, it's going to happen on the 22nd, a Tuesday, Tuesday night. You got any predictions, final predictions? Cats are going to get the number one pick. We are going to choose Cade Cunningham.
00:02:44
Speaker
We are gonna trade Colin Sexton for McCollum. Zion. Oh, yeah, Zion. That's the latest. He's on the market. Yeah, supposedly. His family's pushing for a trade. I don't know how true any of this is.
00:03:02
Speaker
I just saw it on Twitter pop up and I was like, ah, that's pretty wild. I don't know his contract scenario. Like, is he like in a contract year or like on the extension next year? Who knows? All I know is that as soon as you texted me that I was like, oh God, here comes all the stupid cabs Twitter takes. Zoya, not the cabs. You know, like it just stupid. The Pelicans just fired their coach, Stan Van Gundy after one year. And they're trying to move. So I think that has a lot to do with it.
00:03:31
Speaker
They're trying to move Eric Bledsoe as well. Their team in a little bit of turmoil right now and drama. There's a couple teams like

NBA Coaching Changes

00:03:40
Speaker
that. Dallas is another one. Rick Carlisle is stepping down. Did you see that?
00:03:45
Speaker
Another, another, another Cavs Twitter take. Oh, the Cavs need to go get Rick Carlisle and fire bigger staff. And, you know, the carrot, the carrots in front of the, everybody's face right now. And, you know, there's reports to Porzingis isn't very happy out there. And Luca is about to sign for lots and lots of money. So it could be opportunities, right? Speaking of Porzingis, what do you think about like Porzingis? How do you think he would fit on the Cavs if we were to get some sort of deal?
00:04:15
Speaker
I think he would fit good. I really do. Assuming that love goes out in that deal and he is replacing him, I think he would fit well. He moves well. He has length, which is something, you know, Colby Altman just talked about and his presser wanting for this team. And he's a legit star player.
00:04:33
Speaker
You know, um, so I think he'd be an excellent pickup. I have no idea what his contract scenario is. I'm sure he makes a lot of money. I know he missed a season or so. I don't know if that's a one-off or he has injury issues or whatever, but, um, just on paper. Yeah, I'd be all over that. The problem is, is, you know, what else would you have to give up to get a guy like that? But.
00:04:56
Speaker
Who knows, you know, rumors are, this is funny, funny season time. Rumors are the CAS may be willing to shop the pick depending on where they fall, which is basically reported every single year. But who knows, who knows? I'm hoping for the best, Alex. I'm hoping, I think we talked about this in the last episode, that they move up and not move back at least land a top three pick this year. Yeah, yeah, I'm hoping, fingers crossed. That would be amazing.
00:05:25
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. So, Cavs need a break, that's for sure, to really help speed up this rebuild if they can land a top-notch legit player that would help immensely. Yeah. So, have you been watching any of the playoffs?

NBA Playoffs Insights

00:05:42
Speaker
No, no, I again, I just do the Twitter thing. I see everything. I see the highlights. I see all the drama. I see the nets. This I see, you know, the Phoenix doing this and Chris Paul getting covid and you know, it's been it's been an interesting playoffs. I will say it does seem like a lot of people on Twitter at least are like excited about it this year. There's no LeBron. People are loving that. People are loving the fact that, you know, Harden and Kyrie went down.
00:06:09
Speaker
Right. Hardin played the last game and I know they're battling tonight against the Bucks. And last I checked, the Bucks were winning. So, I mean, there's a little bit of drama and uncertainty, you know, like it's kind of hard to predict right now who's going to be in the finals. Like my money would still be on the Nets in the East, but I have no idea in the West. And who would you pick? Geez.
00:06:31
Speaker
No clue. And if Chris Paul is done, you know. There's been a lot of injuries. There's been a lot of injuries. There has been. It's been really bad. This year seems a lot worse than any previous year.
00:06:44
Speaker
Yeah, it's what happens when you have a compact season. The NBA was trying to finish this season relatively close to when they traditionally would so that they don't have another short off season, a short training camp and so on and so forth. And hey, that's what happened. Cows weren't the only one that had injuries and lots of other teams suffered the same kind of fate. So there's no team that you're rooting for at all?
00:07:13
Speaker
Phoenix had me interested. I kind of feel like that was a run that was going to come to an end at some point, but I was impressed with what they were doing. I remember at the end of last year with the whole bubble thing, they went 8-0 and they impressed us and then they, you know, they add Chris Paul to the mix and they elevate even further.
00:07:31
Speaker
And man, they're just running through teams in the playoffs. It's just too bad that this COVID thing happened with Chris Paul. Hopefully he doesn't miss the entire series or anything more than a game or so, because I think he is a game changer. Every team that he seems to join seems to improve. When he was on the Thunder, everybody laughed at that as well. Like, oh, they sent him off to die in Oklahoma City.
00:08:00
Speaker
And they were a respectable team that year. Phoenix doing some things this year with Chris Paul there.

Cavs Players in Big Three League

00:08:05
Speaker
So I want to see him there. And that's kind of who I would be rooting for on the West at least. So you're not rooting for the Clippers with ex-Cavaliers legend Yogi Ferrell? Nah, nah. There's a lot of ex-Cavaliers in the playoffs right now. They're everywhere, man. They're everywhere you look. If you followed the big three, man, I don't know if you saw this, Alex.
00:08:28
Speaker
My boy Alonzo G got drafted. Oh no. Yeah, Alonzo G and Ryan Hollins got drafted this year into the big three. Air G and my boy Hollins. Man. I've said this before, it might've been a long time ago when we maybe first started the podcast.
00:08:46
Speaker
Man, when Alonzo G was on the Cavs and in 2K, he was a beast. He had hops. He was athletic as hell. And I would just, man, I had fun playing with Alonzo G in 2K back in the day. But you sent me, I think a text message a week or two back of like the big three rosters.
00:09:03
Speaker
And you're like, man, there's so many X Cavs players in the big three league. And I kind of did some research, Alex, and I learned that their game stream on Paramount Plus used to be CBS Sports but now they're on Paramount Plus. Really? Yeah. And it's only like 50 bucks a year for that for the commercial version. I'm tempted, Alex. I'm tempted to watch some big three. I just saw a deal for Paramount Plus. It was an Amazon Prime deal for Prime Day.
00:09:33
Speaker
So I think you might be able to take advantage of that, get like a few months for a buck or something. Oh, I'm gonna have to look that up, man. I gotta see some Jamario Moon, some Ricky Davis, and now some Alonzo G tearing it up in the big three league, man. Oh yeah. Waiting for Dwan Wagner to come back. I wouldn't hold my breath.
00:09:53
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So another thing, Alex, and I know we're kind of all over the place. We're kind of just hitting on little interesting topics that we felt were just interested in talk about. The Cavs put out another episode, a mini episode, a real mini episode of the Road Back.

Anderson Varejão's Return

00:10:10
Speaker
They called it the Road Back Refueled. I don't know if that's secret for this is, you know, like one fourth of what the actual videos they would put out. But it was all about Anders and Verjow this time, kind of covering
00:10:23
Speaker
the day that he came back and actually signed his contract in Cleveland, kind of seeing some familiar faces that were here when he was here the first time around to him practicing and then finally playing in his first game. It was only like a two and a half minute video.
00:10:41
Speaker
Um, so it was very, very quick. Uh, but I thought it was good for what it was, but what kind of sparked my interest when I saw that Alex was I started thinking, I was like, wait a second. The cab season has been over for what? Three weeks, almost a month. Got to be approaching close to a month here now.
00:10:58
Speaker
What's going on with Anderson Verjow? I was expecting to like hear of like a retirement announcement or what's his plans moving forward, do you think? I'm kind of shocked that nothing's come out. Is he going to lace them up next year, Alex? That's right. I haven't seen the video, but did it go into like.
00:11:15
Speaker
Did he reach out to the Cavs? Did the Cavs reach out to him? If you're looking for that kind of detail, you'll be very disappointed because it basically just, the video starts off with him signing his contract. It doesn't explain how the deal kind of came to fruition, which is too bad. It would have been kind of cool to learn that information, but now you just see him signing the contract, see him practicing in the practice facility and seeing him knock down two free throws in his first game back.
00:11:45
Speaker
It didn't show any of his last game and his, like, the video they played for him, or any of that? None of that, unfortunately. And they just showed, like, a 20-second clip from a presser of, you know, it feels like he never left. The facility's still the same. There's still some same people here. And he's so glad to be back. He's, like, Cleveland is home for him, and so on and so forth. So, for what it was, I mean, it was fine, but it's just, like, man,
00:12:13
Speaker
I'm just surprised because I think we all felt when we learned that Andy was signing here, it was to retire as a cavalier or he had some kind of position lined up within the organization. So yeah, just kind of curious when we're gonna hear something about it. He found his old spot back on the bench, warmed it up again, found his old room in the Cleveland Clinic. Oh man. The man of glass. The man of glass.
00:12:39
Speaker
Yeah, so if you're interested in that, you can go check it out. It's on the Cavs app or on their YouTube page, I'm sure, too. That's cool. It just came out a couple of days ago. You'll have to check it out. I need to catch up on that. Yeah, so let's talk some... There hasn't been a lot, Alex. Let's talk some off-season chatter. This is all pretty...
00:13:06
Speaker
non-substantial, I'll say, or nothing too much to cling on to, but you know how it is at this time of year. We're a fan base watching all these other teams playing in the playoffs, remembering what it used to be like to be like that.

CJ McCollum Trade Speculations

00:13:18
Speaker
And now we cling on to any sort of Cavs news there is, no matter how unrealistic it sounds. So word on the streets is, Alex, is CJ McCollum is in play for the Cavs as one of the potential destinations he could be moved to if the Blazers decided to move him.
00:13:39
Speaker
Whether that's realistic or not, what is just kind of your take on that? Like, would you welcome a move like that? Adding McCollum to this team? I guess it depends what we have to give up, you know? I don't know. I don't know because I feel like we already got two good young guards.
00:13:59
Speaker
It would be good to have McCollum because he's proven and he's been in the postseason. He'd bring some leadership. He'd bring some, you know, just some veteran qualities to the team that we kind of need to make that next jump. But at the same time, he's going to take away minutes from Sexton and Garland who need, you know, really need the minutes and experience and to develop together. I don't know.
00:14:24
Speaker
I mean, we'd probably have to give up one of them to get him. I'd imagine we'd have to lose Sexton. And do we really want to pair McCollum with Garland? I don't know. If if Garland and Lillard, or sorry, McCollum and Lillard aren't working together, why would McCollum and Garland work together?
00:14:45
Speaker
I don't know. Yeah, that's a valid point. And I was very surprised and shocked because I was surprised by the responses online and actually kind of nodded my head like good. There is some sense out there because what a lot of people assumed was to bring in someone like McCollum, you're probably shipping someone like Sexton out. You know, you're not getting CJ McCollum for Kevin Love straight up. Portland's going to need some sort of young piece to entice them to move on from someone
00:15:12
Speaker
like McCollum. So with that assumption, a lot of cast fans actually said, no, we don't wanna do that deal because why would we trade for somebody that's eight years older? McCollum's 30, Sexton's like what, 22, 21, somewhere around there. So eight, nine years apart. And McCollum's already making that $30 million type dollar contract to where Sexton, he's still on that rookie deal. He will get paid, but he's not getting paid yet.
00:15:41
Speaker
So a lot of fans, you know, defended saying, no, why, why would we make that swap? You know, Sexton still has plenty of room to grow. He's younger, you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I was expecting them to say, yeah, ship, ship Sexton out for, for whatever you can get, because there's plenty of fans that feel that way. And again, I was, I was glad to see that there was a little bit more resistance than just ready to hand him over in that kind of scenario.
00:16:07
Speaker
Yeah, I don't see it happening. I don't think I would be in favor of giving up the pieces that we would have to give up to get him. I just don't see acquiring him being the leap that we would need. I feel like sticking to our guns and continuing to develop the young core that we have is still the way to go.
00:16:28
Speaker
Yeah, it is at this point. And I have been on record in the past on podcast episodes like last season saying like a guy like McCollum is exactly the type of player, exactly the type of veteran I wanted to see added to this team. But now you had Garland make a significant jump from what he was last year. They bring in a Kuro this year. They bring in Jared Allen. You have your core four now. I'm kind of with you. I'm very hesitant to break up any piece of that core four.
00:16:55
Speaker
Um, it has to be someone very, very enticing and McCollum, although I like him a lot, you know, good point with the age difference, the set, the salary that's already there, the salary that you're going to give Jared Allen. And my God, if you can't get a, get rid of Kevin Love, you've got three guys making around 30 million right there. That, that puts that, that kind of hamstrings you, you know, is that a championship team amongst those three guys? Probably not.
00:17:18
Speaker
So is it worth doing that in that type of scenario? So I'm with you as well and a lot of other chaos fans online. I wouldn't pursue that unless there was some way you can move Kevin Love and somehow keep your core four guys, maybe move another piece or so. Give them Dylan Windler and a future first round pick. I don't know what it would take.
00:17:41
Speaker
Yeah, if we were going to shop for a piece, you know, I, you know, McCollum's a great player. I think he has all the qualities that we would want if we were going to get a player, but I don't really want another guard. I would want like somebody that would fit in at the three to kind of fill that hole on the team. Yeah. Yeah.
00:18:02
Speaker
So the other, again, this is just, we're clinging on to any kind of news whatsoever out there. But there was some reports too, Alex, about some potential free agents that the Cavs could be targeting.

Backup Point Guards Options

00:18:14
Speaker
One thing I was happy to see with this was, although the list was short and it's very early in the off season and it most likely will change, the report was all about point guards.
00:18:24
Speaker
It looks like the Cavs are looking to upgrade their backup point guard position, which I feel they absolutely need to do. Talked about this recently as well. I love Delhi, but it's time to move on from him. And the two names that jumped out to me that were part of that initial report was TJ McConnell from Indiana, Pacers, basically a modern day version of Delhi, right? Just a hardworking grind it out kind of player.
00:18:52
Speaker
And the other guy was your boy out in LA, Alex Caruso.
00:18:58
Speaker
Crusoe's not my boy, man. I know that's why I said that. I'm not much of a Crusoe fan. Why is that, Alex? Because there's a whole fan base, man. He seems to be worshipped in some areas. Yeah, yeah. I know he's got a following. But I think he's just one of those players that kind of feeds off LeBron. I mean, he fits in well next to LeBron. And we saw that in Cleveland for years that certain players will overachieve when they're next to LeBron. Certain players will.
00:19:28
Speaker
you know, underachieve next to LeBron and some players will overachieve. You know, similar to like Mo Williams. I mean, he overachieved when he was next to LeBron in Cleveland. And I get that feeling with Caruso, like he just happens to be an opportunist playing next to LeBron and that works out for him. Anywhere else, you know, I don't think he would excel or be what he is.
00:19:52
Speaker
Yeah, and I would say using Mo Williams as a comparison compared to Caruso, it's miles apart from each other. Mo Williams, man, he was a starting point guard putting up double digit points. He was in the high teens at one point, 17, 18 points, made the all-star game one year. He was basically for a while your second scoring option with Z being the third. Caruso, I looked up his stats the other day and I'm like, okay, what is everybody so impressed about?
00:20:21
Speaker
Um, he, he averaged just under seven points and under three assists, you know, so I, I guess I really just don't get it. To me, it kind of feels like a Chetty thing. You know, remember when Chetty was kind of brand new and nobody knew a lot about him, a new shiny object, the first Chetty and everybody kind of.
00:20:39
Speaker
went a little crazy on social media. Half of it was joking and half of it was, oh, maybe we have a diamond and a rough kind of thing. And we all know what we have now today with Chetty. That's what it feels like with Caruso. To me, if you had those- Yeah, I'm not saying Caruso is Mo Williams. No, no, no, he's not. I'm just saying they kind of fit next to LeBron really well. Yeah, yeah.
00:20:58
Speaker
I'm with you there, but if I had to pick between the two, I would take TJ McConnell all day. We saw what he did in the one game where he single-handedly brought the Pacers back, beat the Cavs, had a triple-double against us, hard-nosed player. Like I said, basically, the modern-day version of what Delhi used to be, I think he'd be great as a backup point guard option for this team, and I hope the Cavs are actually trying to pursue him, because I think he'd be a good fit.
00:21:27
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I think you would be a solid piece to just be a backup guard on the Cavs. You just need somebody reliable that can run your offense. He plays some defense. He's gritty. He hustles. That's all you need. You're not going to get some sexy name to be playing your backup point guard, but he would be a very, very solid fit.
00:21:47
Speaker
So I'm sure more reports will come out, Alex, here over the next several weeks. And especially after the season ends to where free agency can actually open up, we'll probably hear some more names that the Cavs are potentially going after. Yeah, should be good. So let's talk about something else kind of important, Alex.

Cavs 2016 Championship Anniversary

00:22:09
Speaker
We are approaching a very special anniversary this Saturday, actually.
00:22:17
Speaker
It's the five year anniversary of your Cleveland Cavaliers winning the first championship in Cleveland in over 50 years. The historic comeback down from three to one against the Golden State Warriors, the block, the shot, the stop. Five years ago, man, time flies. Yeah, it doesn't seem that long ago.
00:22:41
Speaker
I don't know, man, some days it feels like it was just yesterday and some days it feels like 20 years ago. And part of that is how rough it's been watching Cavs basketball the last two years or basically since us as geniuses started this podcast, they were dreadful. And they haven't been, they've been only maybe marginally better since we've started this. But man, do you still like,
00:23:06
Speaker
Just thinking about that, do you still just remember watching that, remembering where you were when it actually happened and just the feeling and just, man, I go back and I think of, you know, this city, this fan base, how electric they were in unified and the parade and how much positivity there was and now how it's kind of just all opposite.
00:23:25
Speaker
It's all doom and gloom talk all the time and not even appreciating some of the folks that contribute to that championship anymore. So it's just kind of crazy of where we're at from five years in the future. But man, I reminisce about that a lot. I can still remember where I was at, jumping up and down on my couch with my wife and just in shock.
00:23:48
Speaker
That's great. Yeah, I remember exactly because I was on vacation in Florida and I just remember we were staying at a condo on the beach and I just remember when they won, I just heard cars in the parking lot honking and people shouting in the streets and this was down in Florida. That's freaking amazing. That's crazy. That shows you how much people of their fan bases just
00:24:18
Speaker
They hated LeBron, I could say that for sure, but they hated the Warriors more. And they saw the underdog story, they saw the hometown kid, they saw the comeback, the historic, nobody's ever come back from down three to one. And man, yeah, other fan bases, they bought in, they were rooting for Cleveland. And that's proof right there that you were in another state, not even relatively close, and they were cheering down there. And I feel like that would happen if somehow the Nets lost the championship this year.
00:24:48
Speaker
you know, if they made it there and somehow, you know, some other team knocked them off or even along the way, say they don't even make it to the championship. God, fans are gonna be brutal online if that happens. Right. Deservingly so. Yeah. I saw on the Cavs team shop, they listed some championship gear. One that stuck out to me the most was you can get a replica 2016 championship trophy
00:25:16
Speaker
for a hundred bucks. You can get, they have some crazy stuff on there and some very expensive stuff on there. Yeah, I was tempted to get that replica Larry O'Brien trophy until I saw it was a hundred dollars. So I was like, oh, how sweet would this be on my desk? I was too, and then I wasn't too impressed with just the overall look at it. It's just like very, I don't know, just plain Jane looking. And I think I looked at how big it was. It wasn't as big as I was expecting either. I'm just like, ah, for a hundred bucks, I don't think so.
00:25:46
Speaker
Maybe if we were working at the office still, Alex, cause we're both working from home, that would look pretty cool in the office maybe, but yeah. Sitting on my, you know, sitting on a shelf at my home. I don't know. It's just not as fun. So, but yeah, there's some calf swag on there. Go check it out. You know, the calf's put up some new t-shirts and some other stuff. So yeah, man, five freaking years. It's pretty crazy. And time flies, man. Appreciate it. Don't know when the next one's going to come. Five more years.
00:26:15
Speaker
Five more years. All right, Alex. So we haven't played this on the last couple episodes of the podcast.

Shoot it or Pass it Game Segment

00:26:24
Speaker
And I wanted to make sure we don't go too many episodes without playing it. But I think we should play some shoot it or pass it. What do you think? All right. Sounds good. All right. So CAS fans, if you don't know or haven't caught the episodes where we've done this, this is a new game, a new idea that Alex came up with.
00:26:42
Speaker
you know while he was drinking margaritas and coffee and everything else he's doing because he's crazy and he said you know let's come up with a game with some hot takes and we'll call it you know shooter to pass it and basically if you're taking that hot take you're you're shooting it and if you say hell no to that hot take you're passing it off to deli in the corner for a for a brick three
00:27:03
Speaker
Yeah, for an overhead airball. For an overhead airball, yeah. So let's play some shoot it or pass it. Alex, do you have any or do you want me to go first? You know what? I'll throw one at you. All right. So the next ex-Cleveland Cavalier to sign a contract with the Cavs to retire with the Cavs
00:27:31
Speaker
will be Kyrie Irving. You sure you're only drinking margaritas over there?
00:27:40
Speaker
You sure you ain't smoking nothing over there? Come on, man. That'll never happen. I'm passing that all day for deli air balls in the corner. Chetty off the backboards. I don't even care, man. If you would have said LeBron, I might have entertained that for a second. I was just going to say, what about LeBron? LeBron is a one-year circus retirement contract with the Cavs to retire a cap.
00:28:06
Speaker
That's a little more legitimate question. And if I had to pick between the two, I would definitely pick LeBron over Kyrie in that scenario.
00:28:14
Speaker
And I know there's been chatter about that, you know, and where his son will be drafted and all that kind of stuff. To be honest with you, I don't think the Cavs are gonna be in a position to draft his son first and foremost. That's a couple more years yet. By God, they gotta be competitive by then. They're still, you know, the bottom feeder of the team that could potentially land the number one overall pick, then we're in some trouble. And I just don't see it happening. I don't think,
00:28:40
Speaker
I don't know. I just have this weird feeling LeBron's not going to go to another team, even if his son does get drafted and he's still playing. I think he's going to finish his career out in L.A. I really do. I don't know. What would you do? What is the next ex Cleveland Cavalier that you could see pulling this bear show stunt retire with the Cavs? I don't know. It's it's hard. It's hard to tell because I mean, it's it's hard to think of somebody
00:29:07
Speaker
Um, like right now that's at the, cause like Verja wasn't even playing. It wasn't even like, you know, he's been playing, you know, this is Vince Carver. He's playing his last year. He's 40 years old. And there's, I was out of the league for three, 40 years. Totally unprecedented. Nobody would have predicted that.
00:29:23
Speaker
It's kind of hard to sit here and think of somebody that's in the league right now that was significant enough while their time on the Cavs that would make sense for them to come back for some kind of farewell tour. I can't think of anybody, can you? Yeah, no, I was just looking. Actually, I was just looking up to see when the last time Williams played. And that was the 2016 season. Yeah. Yeah, I can't really think of anybody else that was like a longtime cab that that might do this.
00:29:54
Speaker
Yeah, no, I can't think of one either. I'm sure it'll happen. It probably won't be somebody as significant as Varajao, though. I mean, he did play, what, nine years here. There's nobody else that sniffed that amount of time. And you don't know who the only guy that could do it, to be honest with you. And he's got too much time left in his career.
00:30:14
Speaker
to do it anytime soon, I think, with Tristan Thompson. With Tristan Thompson came back in three or four years, you know, when the Cavs are competitive again, he signs a one-year deal to come off the bench, you know, as they're making playoff pushes, hopefully. Yeah, that's a good one. I didn't even think about TT. Yeah, so, yeah, it'll be interesting, but I gotta, I gotta, I'm gonna pass it on both LeBron and Kyrie. I just don't, I just don't see it happening. Would you shoot or pass that?
00:30:45
Speaker
Oh yeah, oh no, no. I don't think it'll happen. I don't think so. All right, what do you got? All right, so I got this weird feeling that I was like a 50-50 shot that this can happen. I'm gonna throw it out there like this. The calves will make a move, a major move that was unexpected.
00:31:10
Speaker
Now that could be a lot of things. That could be them landing a top three pick but trading it to bring in a solidified player in return. That could be being part of a blockbuster trade where they're not just the 13 getting an Andre Drummond type scenario. Like no, they actually make a blockbuster trade and go get Porzingis or something like that or sign some free agents somehow
00:31:37
Speaker
that nobody saw coming, that is significant. You know, someone, you know, not TJ McConnell, someone that actually, you know, can go right into the starting lineup. So my shooter to pass a question for you, Alex, is the Cavs will make some sort of move that nobody saw coming. It can even be a coaching change. You know, they fire bigger staff and go get Carlisle or something like that. I'm gonna pass it. I don't see them doing anything shocking like that.
00:32:06
Speaker
I think we're gonna stay pat kind of and see what we can get through the draft. And yeah, I just can't see us making any big blockbuster trade or, you know, with the assets that we have, they're all young guys that we're trying to build on. So if something does like big or shocking happen, it would be to move Kevin Love. But you know what we would get in return, I don't think would be any kind of blockbuster. So yeah, I'm gonna pass it on that one.
00:32:36
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. And that's fair. I mean, the Cavs are either going to hold it close to the vest and you know, Altman did say there's already a lot of established veterans on the team. They just got to be healthy. You know, obviously they have plans to sign Jared Allen. They can add another very young piece to the roster. Hopefully a top three pick, have them come off the bench even.
00:32:56
Speaker
Because no reason to knock Okuro out of the starting lineup right away. Let the young guy come off the bench a little bit. And yeah, they can hold it close to the vest, maybe sign one guy like a McConnell and call it an off season. Yeah. It really comes down to how desperate are they to take a leap next year? How badly do they want to be the Atlanta Hawks or the New York Knicks or the Phoenix Suns and get into contention? How much pressure is on Altman?
00:33:24
Speaker
to make a move to, you know, to make that jump or retain his own job and that kind of stuff. So I could be completely wrong, but I think, I don't know, something's just telling me there's that possibility out there that the Cavs might, might want to make a jump and make some kind of move to help solidify that happening next year. So what to see. Yeah. I think the biggest thing that could happen would be that the Cavs land a top three pick.
00:33:50
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, you could be right. Hopefully that does happen. And I'd be happy if that was the biggest thing because we need that luck with this draft and we need to move up and not move back again for the third year in a row. What do you think about this? What if the Cavs do land a top three pick? Do they trade it for Zion? Hey, that's what I'm saying. What if it took the top three pick, Kevin Love,
00:34:17
Speaker
uh, and Dean Wade or something like that. Some other guy like that, the Dylan Windler, I don't know. I mean, I think Cleveland fans would be all over that.
00:34:28
Speaker
they'd be all over that. And that's what I mean. Depending on where they land in the draft, they could finally say, hey, now's the time to cash in on one of these chips. We already have our core four, who's all under 25 years old. We're about to draft an 18-year-old that's kind of, we don't know what we're actually gonna get out of him, because he's not experienced. Let's go get freaking Zion. Let's go get Porzingis. Let's go get an established player somehow.
00:34:54
Speaker
And you know, maybe that's how you get out of the Kevin love contract as well. You dangle that, that number one overall pick or that, you know, top three pick along with Kevin love. Um, and, and you throw in some other young asset from your team. Who knows? Yeah. Yeah. I would do it. I would go for Zion, not, not poor Zingas, but Zion for sure. Yeah.
00:35:15
Speaker
So I don't know, man, anything can happen. We'll have to wait and see. I can't wait. I said this last year too. I just, I can't wait for the playoffs to be done and the off season to start the lotto to happen next week. I'm pumped up for that now and draft night and then free agency and trades and I can't wait. I want to see what this team does, if anything, hopefully something to get us excited. So did you have another one?
00:35:46
Speaker
The only other one I was going to say was kind of singling out Sexton. Colin Sexton will be traded this offseason. And really the only grounds behind that is he seems to be the most talked about piece, the most logical piece.
00:36:02
Speaker
Uh, as far as a trade, he's young, he's proven to be a scorer. He's still on his rookie contract, although he's going to be expecting to get paid after next season. And, uh, I don't know. I feel like out of the pieces we have him along with Garland are probably your two best trade assets right now. So would you shoot or pass Colin sex and not being here, say past next year's trade deadline? I'd pass it. I think he's going to be here. I don't see the cams moving him.
00:36:34
Speaker
I know he's kind of the hot topic in the corner piece of a lot of trade machine deals that I've seen online, but you don't get better by trading your best player. And Colin Sexton is our best player right now.
00:36:50
Speaker
Yeah, he's the most, and there's people that'll scoff at that, but he's been your most consistent player. Garland took leaps and bounds this year, but Sexton was still your driving force, your engine of this team that night in and night out when he did play, because he did miss some games this year. He was for the most part consistent. He averaged, what, 24 points this year?
00:37:10
Speaker
He still has that urge to improve, still has that fire, still has that intensity. So yeah, I think it's fair to say that right now, as of today, he is your best player on the roster. But that's also why a lot of articles, a lot of fans see him as also your best and most logical trade piece that other teams would potentially want. So I think that's why he gets put in a lot of those trade machine and articles and so on and so forth. Right.
00:37:41
Speaker
We'll see. Did you have another one or are you done? No, no, I don't have anything else. Okay. All right. Well, I think we talked about a lot of different topics.
00:37:53
Speaker
Alex, you're going on vacation here soon, right? I will be, I'll be gone next week. So you'll be gone next week. So we will get back here in a couple of weeks, closer to the end of the month. We'll do another episode, Alex, with a reaction to where the Cavs landed as far as the draft lotto. Who knows? Maybe the Cavs will have Zion on the roster. Maybe we'll trade love and Altman for Zion and we'll get Drift back.
00:38:20
Speaker
Altman. Griff, we're going to trade GMs. Stan Van Gundy ends up being assistant on the Cavs bench. I mean, in two weeks, man, so much can happen. There's so many things that can happen here. So I'm excited to talk to you again here at the end of the month when you get back from vacation. Hope you have a good time and hope the Cavs, I hope we're talking about a top three pick when you come back.
00:38:46
Speaker
