Ok, so we need a mulligan on this one. Although we believe the actual interview with Scott Lowe and James Green will perhaps surface eventually, we seem to have misplaced it. However, we do still have our discussion after that interview, which is an enlightening enough taste of the actual interview that it's still worth sharing.

It's a 10 minute listen, we hope you enjoy it. And if you happen to find our missing podcast recording anywhere, be a dear and send it back home to us, please. We won't be mad, we just want it back.

Introduction to Bonus Content

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, everybody. Welcome to the show. This is bonus content for the Uncomma Wealth Partners podcast. Yes. This is me, Philip Ramsey. And I'm Aaron Kramer. We are going to dissect and talk through the actual media.

Connection to James Green

00:00:13
Speaker
I knew it was going to be one. I've been wanting them on the show for quite some time. They're both busy. They have a lot going on, but super grateful for their time. One, I know James pretty well. I don't. You don't. I've actually known James since he was in high school.
00:00:28
Speaker
Wow. Yeah. So fun story. My sister, I'm sorry. My wife's sister is 10 years younger than my wife. And so she one day was like when she was in high school, we were married at the time said, Hey, can I come over some Friday night with some friends? We don't have anything to do. Well, we had

James Green's Business Success

00:00:46
Speaker
game night. It was a blast. And then the next Friday,
00:00:49
Speaker
uh like four people came the next friday eight people came and by the time we had like 32 people in our house it was awesome that's one of those people a Ramsey story was James Green uh so i've known him and before he was married before all of this so it is a joy to see him thriving um and have a successful one business and then two a successful transition where he sold the business uh but i'm really grateful for their wisdom just being transparent

Collaborative Ownership

00:01:16
Speaker
with how that
00:01:18
Speaker
Talk to me. What was your like holy cow? I don't know. I guess mine is the fact one. They did it with four owners. Yep. You know, that to me is huge because
00:01:29
Speaker
I mean, you think about what it takes for someone to jump off that bridge. It takes a lot of guts. It's almost like an alpha personality. You have an alpha personality to go, I'm going to do this. But now you're taking an alpha personality and you are putting it in with three other people. And you're making it work.
00:01:48
Speaker
Yeah, right. And I love that the seems like Scott and David were the ones who started it. Yep. And but they were also kind of dipping their toe in. And then when James and Jordy came, it was like, oh, all hands are on deck. We're going to do this.

Team Dynamics and Conflict

00:02:04
Speaker
Like, yeah, put our heads down. We're going to do this because nobody quits a job to just kind of pretend like they're going to do them. Like they had a vendetta. But this is like a like a true like story. I feel like for small. It's like, oh, you know, like because
00:02:17
Speaker
Yeah, Scott and David were like, you know, let's start the side thing. You know, like just because they liked each other, they were friends, it sounded like. Yeah. And like, let's just find a side project. Let's work on together because they only met up during this retreat. Right. And so like it would give them a way to stay in contact, you know, throughout the year. But then for it to turn out to be something like this. So cool. So cool.
00:02:41
Speaker
Um, I like too that they talk through some of the hard things and I loved how Scott didn't see it as like a hard thing. Yeah. James was like, I know one. I thought that was like a perfect synopsis of the relationship.

Spousal Support's Impact

00:02:56
Speaker
Like of a team, of a team, like a good, healthy team.
00:02:58
Speaker
Yes. And and it shows kind of the personality that James has when when they came with probably something like hey this is what and he really was like hey I'm not gonna fall victim I'm gonna try to learn from this I'm not gonna act like they're spilled milk like let's just keep moving on and like yeah and Scott said we never had to address it again like I know Scott didn't even remember it
00:03:16
Speaker
Yes, it's so good because I mean like for you listeners like to really break that down because I know we have a team here and for anybody else that's listening like for the business owners It's like this is a big deal because when you bring something to somebody and it's a partner Again, like I go back to my beginning statement. You're dealing with a bunch of alphas
00:03:36
Speaker
And you're telling an alpha that they're wrong or they're doing something wrong. And there's usually I mean, you go back to the animalistic way. You just look at bold like it doesn't go well. Yeah, James, that could have gone nuclear. Yes. Yeah. But it went so well to the point where Scott was like, I didn't remember it because it just went so well.
00:03:54
Speaker
Yeah. And I loved it because they, they could talk through that. If you think you're a part of a team and there's not something that's frustrating you or them about you and like there's happenings, but like you have to talk through that. And if you don't want to talk through it, I don't know if it's as healthy as you could.

Valuing Employees in Business Sale

00:04:10
Speaker
Again, after they've had that conversation, they realize that like, oh wow, like that actually went really well.
00:04:15
Speaker
Which was a perfect pave the perfect way for that to conversation to come up again or another thing of like hey Here's something that builds trust it builds trust all good things. Although in the moment, it's very hard Yes, so that was cool. I really loved that I love that they talked through about their spouses. That's something that I'll always highlight Yeah, I think that has been an under arching theme and all of our podcasts our guests is like they wouldn't be there without the sport of their spouse Yeah
00:04:44
Speaker
So honestly, it's one of those things where I know we always get these successful people on the shows that have done it and have good marriages. But it would be interesting to see the stats of people trying to have an amazing, they have everything it takes to make a successful business except for a partner on board.
00:05:05
Speaker
Yeah, right. So if your spouse isn't on board at the first, like I'm telling you, please don't even try it. Like it's too big of a role that they have to play. Sometimes that'd be the cheerleaders. Sometimes it'd be the empathizers. Sometimes they have to sometimes just have to be with you on the level that you're at, but they will always have to support you. So that would be something that I would take away. Now let's talk through how awesome it was that when they were walking through, you know, selling this, the company, how they really thought about their employees.
00:05:35
Speaker
Yes, I love that.

Post-Sale Identity Challenges

00:05:37
Speaker
I felt like that was such a really cool Just an attitude to have is like a I know this is gonna be beneficial for us But we also want to benefit the employees that helped us get to where we're at Because we know we couldn't have got to where we're at without the employees Yeah, I don't know if you put this together but like and I know you probably have but it just edifies my knowledge and knowing that like every time you see a small business a successful small business and
00:06:06
Speaker
They love their employees. Oh, buddy. Yeah. So much. Yeah. And like family. Yeah. And then you understand every role all the way down to like you have a building and you have a janitor. Like you appreciate what they do because it's so important because most likely you probably were that person doing that job at one point. Yeah. Because that's what you do as a business owner. Right. But yeah. They fought for it. Like they fought for their employees. They fought for it. And then here's my final point.
00:06:37
Speaker
The identity that you find in building a company, the identity that you have started and what you just don't know what that's going to do and how hard you've worked and what that's going to do on the toll that it's taking in the future. And they both talked about it.
00:06:54
Speaker
Yeah. How hard it has been after they've sold it. Like, who am I? What is my purpose? Because it's been so focused and so hard work up to that point. Like, I get what they're saying. They bled into that. They bled, fought for that. And so afterwards, like, and Scott said, like, I've had more anxiety than I ever had. Which you would think from the outsider's perspective, like, well, now you've got money. Like, why do you have anxiety? Like, there's something that you have as an identity issue.
00:07:23
Speaker
When you're when you're working in the business and you don't even realize it until it's gone I don't and I don't think you can get away from it like it's I don't either that's what I was like how do you guard yourself from that and James did a really good job at the end of like this is what I would have done different yes, but in the moment
00:07:40
Speaker
like i know i'm there i should probably be distancing myself for some things making sure i'm doing this but like i don't feel like i need it until after i'm like i needed that well you can't distance yourself from something like that because like it is like i mean no matter what you do
00:07:55
Speaker
You don't even have to own it like police officers. That's a part of their identity. That's firefighters are there identity what you're spending 40 50 60 hours a week doing something every day it's going to be a part of your identity now, let's throw on the business owner side of it where you've Legitimately laid down your lifelines. Well, it's kind of like adoption or like like it's been your child for so long now you're you're giving it to somebody else and
00:08:21
Speaker
Yes, and you're gonna be right next to it and you're gonna be in the same house of the family that you just Adopted this business to like horrible analogy.

Reflections on Identity Loss

00:08:30
Speaker
It's not family, but it I feel like you bleed you sweat you've hard work all into your business Yeah, and then they give yeah, you walk away with a big check, but still it is your baby Yes, I mean to put it like I know we're like digging into this but it is that thing like so I just moved right and
00:08:48
Speaker
and now i'm around meeting my neighbors and everything the second or third thing that comes out of my mouth my question is what do you do yeah right so it shows you just as society we put so much emphasis on it what is it that you do
00:09:05
Speaker
Yeah, I don't care what it is, but it's tied you like cuz you're gonna say I do this But you're not saying I am this but it kind of like you're saying I am this especially if you own it like I own my own business and it's like there's some pride in that and especially if you built it Yeah built it up to what they built it up to Wow like
00:09:21
Speaker
Oh my gosh seven eight years like it's not been that long no 10 years isn't that crazy 10 years for their success in 10 years is amazing i only blew myself i know i'm eight years in i'm like nope not like that are we doing yeah yeah
00:09:38
Speaker
No, man. I loved it. I think that is such. That's what I kind of wanted to kind of flush out because I had the privilege of knowing James. Yeah. And walking through this.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments

00:09:48
Speaker
It's been really good. And I really respect James. And so to see a buddy really struggling with your identity and like I know James. He's a solid believer. Yeah. So he knows who his savior is.
00:10:02
Speaker
Yeah, but still there is an identity thing that we all as humans We I guess empathize with having identity and stuff like that. So it's been good for me to watch that and it's been interesting for I think James most interesting for James and I'm glad he has Scott and the other owners to kind of process through this But that they have this. Hey, how are you doing? You know, I
00:10:27
Speaker
Love to like take him out cuz like I know I don't have it on the business side But I know it's just like it gives me goosebumps and I got my heart just goes out to him for this cuz like It's funny if you ever talked to a college collegiate athlete
00:10:41
Speaker
Um, oh, there you go. We all come out. If you play all four years, very similar. Yeah, it is so similar. There you go. I'll go through a depression because it's our identity. Yes. And then you see, and it gets worse longer. It goes, right? Like, so like you see pros that come out so bad. I mean, that's why time Tom Brady and Jordan, like they couldn't leave.
00:10:59
Speaker
I mean they had done the best they were the best they are the best and they couldn't leave this industry like their industry so it's like So I can relate so much. I've been through it and it's so hard. Yeah, so James and Scott. Thank you for imparting your wisdom with ya. Thank you for having empathy for those you lead We're super grateful for your success and we are your biggest fans biggest fans So anytime you need anything from us, we're right here for you
