Introduction to the Daily Southampton Podcast

00:00:09
Zak
Good morning, good afternoon, good evening. This is the Daily Southampton, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. I, today, am your host, Zach Ingo Finch.
00:00:20
Zak
Extremely caffeinated, as always, joined by my wonderful friend, excellent co-host, and just, in general, great Saints fan. How you doing, Greg? You alright, man?
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm alright, mate. Look, it's been a been a day.

Fan Reactions to Pre-Season Matches

00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've had some football, but... But like i'm I'm excited to get into your your research today.
00:00:38
Zak
We have had some football.
00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's a little great.
00:00:42
Zak
Yeah, obviously I started having a look at sort of the younger players and some of the sort of players that might emerge through the season.
00:00:48
Zak
and And we've had a pre-season so far and and I'm not going to lie, we have kind of, I'm not saying we're flocking a horse at this point, but...
00:00:59
Zak
We can take and read too much into pre-season. I think that you're seeing a lot of that in the fan base. The fan base, especially on the social, seems to be very split between why are we still talking about pre-season? It's literally fitness. And wow, I noticed that Bozunu's save wasn't quite up to the standard that it should be. So we should just terminate his contract and everything in between.
00:01:18
Zak
So let's just take a step back today.

Challenges in Researching Wellington

00:01:20
Zak
and We're going to have a look at one of our players that's coming through. We're going to have a look at Wellington today, Greg. This was a hard episode to do because there is not a lot of information.
00:01:31
Zak
there is There is subsequently, he has a much longer career than I think you're expecting. But also, it barely any of it seems to be documented.
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
you don't see You don't speak Portuguese, so it was much harder to get to the root too.
00:01:43
Zak
I don't speak Portuguese, Greg. You're right. So that meant that like verifying a lot of the sources was hard. There's a lot of links in certain places and articles to sources that you click on it and you just get an error 404, especially when it comes to his like appearances in the Brazilian youth team.
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:01:59
Zak
So we'll take that with a pinch of salt. Plus the fact that the Brazilian league itself seems to have both the the domestic league and then sort of like a league cup that's also a mini league And then like another league, Continental competitions, which is why you're going to discover that he made something like 164 appearances for his last club, but despite the fact he's like 20.
00:02:22
Zak
So we're going to get into all of that. So Greg, you excited?
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Always, mate. I love these episodes. They are some of my favourite.
00:02:29
Zak
Wonderful. So starting from the top, Wellington, Damascena, Santos was born on the February, um so you know pretty much ah ah Pretty much a young whippersnapper at this point, right? still we still Still kind of not quite as young as some of the players we've got coming through. but But he's only just...
00:02:51
Zak
sort of broken into English football, right?
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:02:54
Zak
So he's been in football since a very young age and he was entirely a one-club man before joining us.

Wellington's Early Life and Career Beginnings

00:03:02
Zak
So he was born and played for Sao Paulo in Brazil and due to sort of a rough upbringing and his mum kind of tried her best to sort of be able to afford to him to go back and forth from football clubs and stuff. He ended up living at the club accommodation from 14 years old.
00:03:22
Zak
So he's literally like football has been his entire existence. And obviously you hear those kinds of stories, you know, especially in places like Brazil and Argentina.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:30
Zak
And like, it's not uncommon that football does become these players complete life. Like, right. Like we talk about how football is our lives here, but not quite to the extent of you, you literally just living in the training ground 24 seven. And that's what you do.
00:03:44
Zak
So he played quite a few matches before he even turned 20. So he played 26 matches for the under-15s, 37 matches for the for the under-20s.
00:03:59
Zak
During that time as well, he was managed to get capped in the Brazilian national squad. He was capped once in the Brazilian under-23s and three times for the under-20s.
00:04:10
Zak
so He managed to bag a couple of trophies in his youth as well, such as the 2018 Copa do Brazil under-20s and the Copina 2019. And yeah, yeah so so he had like a big youth career before he even stepped into what we would consider to be the world of professional football.
00:04:26
Zak
So before he signed like a pro contract, he was actually named in the pro team for the last championship match. in 2019 but didn't quite make his debut so very much on the bench you and know we've seen this before with quite a few players over the years you know I'm thinking of sort of like Jay Robinson was on the bench a few times before Tyler Dibbling was on the bench I think a few times before he eventually made his start so yeah kind of that that sort of thing but it would be in March in 2020 when he actually came on for his first like professional cap
00:05:00
Zak
in which he had just signed his pro contract as well. ended up having quite a dramatic debut, where he came on in a 1-0 defeat to Botafogo, who are the club that the Anko's at now.
00:05:13
Zak
And

Professional Debut and Injury

00:05:13
Zak
he came on as a second-half sub for a player called Everton, and managed to suffer a head injury. However, despite the head injury, he played on for the rest of the match. I'm not quite sure how that happened.
00:05:27
Zak
I've seen the news article that confirmed it, so bit mad. And then at the end of the match, Greg, was taken to hospital for tests. So you you talk about...
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. Look, I think that it's not a particularly controversial opinion that health, safety, and player care out in South America is at a slightly different point in its growth than ours, right?
00:05:53
Zak
Right. it's It's like when you see those Twitter compilations of like, this is the most South American goal I've ever seen, where like four defenders trip over themselves, somebody scores, a dog starts running through the stands.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:05
Zak
Yeah, you're right.
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:06
Zak
it well I wouldn't say it's the same like you know health and safety. wouldn't say it's it's different, right? I think that's where we're at.
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:13
Zak
It's not worse. It's not more unprofessional. It's just a different type of football. Again, like the amount of football they play is is a little bit nuts. So he he continued to be in and around the squad pretty much up until he joined us.
00:06:26
Zak
But there's some there some key things that happened in between there. And we're going to talk about them and get into the crux of his career after a word from our partners at Zencastr.
00:06:38
Zak
After a word from our partners at Bionique.

Attracting European Attention

00:07:18
Zak
And we are back. So when we when we left off, Wellington had just had his debut. He almost got absolutely clattered and had to go to hospital to make sure that he was still do concussed after the game.
00:07:32
Zak
And he continued to then and start to make appearances quite regularly for Sao Paulo. He
00:07:36
Zak
So, he scored his first goal in April 2021 against Guarina. And after that game, went on to play the final of the Polista, I think the competition is called.
00:07:50
Zak
And they won that cup and they... They beat them in the the next game. built Palmaris in the next game 2-0, which he was an unused sub in. But he did score in the semifinal, basically.
00:08:00
Zak
And then ah ah year later, in the same competition, he scored again and helped Sao Paulo reach the final by scoring the winning goal in the semifinal. And then he started that final against Palmarios again, were beaten 4-0.
00:08:15
Zak
So, you know, swings and roundabouts. He's been part of success. He's been part of failure. He's going to know all about that when he joins his later club.
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:25
Zak
So, yeah, it was about this time he changed his shirt number, which is apparently a bit of information of note. And again, when I tell you I'm scraping the barrel, that is apparently an interesting fact of his career.
00:08:37
Zak
But it was actually in 2023 he suffered a really bad ankle injury. he actually did ligament damage to the point where he ended up having surgery on his left angle and was almost out for four months.
00:08:49
Zak
So he was out right up until June. And when he came back, Greg, in June 2023, they were batting away suitors. It turned out that obviously during his time and his couple of years there, he'd he'd kind of turned the heads of some European clubs.
00:09:06
Zak
Obviously, we're the ones that ended up winning in the end. But some of his suitors and some of the links, according to his agent, again, some of this is according to his agent, some of this is according to, it could be, the Brazilian version of the Sun, for all I know, to take it all with pinch of salt.
00:09:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
system.
00:09:19
Zak
But the clubs so that he was linked to during that time were Bayer Leverkusen, Florentina, Felibacce, and Basquita. So Turkey, Italy, and Germany, which, you know.
00:09:30
Zak
And there was also, August that year, an offer that was rejected from Brentford. So I don't know what that would have looked like, if I'm totally honest. And there is a almost...
00:09:44
Zak
95% chance he was going to end up up playing in Russia. So so you they had agreed a fee, they'd agreed to transfer, he was sorting out his visa to go to CSKA Moscow, and the transfer was accepted, but then something went wrong, eight the paperwork fell before the deadline, ah and then he didn't

Transition to English Football

00:10:04
Zak
end up moving, which obviously is to our benefit later on down the line.
00:10:09
Zak
He then reached that year his 100th match for Sao Paulo, and in total, he played 164 times. So, 87 in the league, 38 in the state league, where he scored all his goals, 16 in cup competitions, 22 in continental, and one other appearance is listed in his total appearances. So,
00:10:29
Zak
For someone that when we signed, I thought basically it just had youth football. Like that's at least my understanding of it.
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:35
Zak
yeah actually It actually turns out he's basically had a career already. And like if he'd retired with the amount of caps that he's had in another club, he probably wouldn't back too much of an eyelid.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:43
Zak
Like at this point, probably made more appearances than Danny Drinkwater, right?
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:47
Zak
It's one of those things.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, that is, but that's you know, an experienced player, as well as being youthful.
00:10:52
Zak
Yeah.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And ah ah sounds like fullback who likes to score a goal occasionally. i mean, that that tracks with what I've seen from him in a Saints shirt. So it's great.
00:11:05
Zak
Yeah, so that was like, you know, that's that's what we saw of him. And he explains why when he first came in that first game of Ipswich, we kind of, I remember even us talking about he seemed really settled.
00:11:17
Zak
Like I was expecting a player to come to it so another country and not really have played this football, and in my mind, only played youth football, to all of a sudden come in and jump into the game like he did and handle it as well as he did.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:11:28
Zak
was very surprised, um now we're starting to understand a little bit more why. So obviously, he ended up signing a pre-contract agreement with us in July 2024, before joining us in January this year, after his Sao Paulo contract expired.
00:11:43
Zak
So he was originally signing alongside his former teammate Juan, you might have heard of, Greg, who ended up going to Gestepi.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's the one who's on loan at Steppe, yeah.
00:11:53
Zak
Yes. so But the thing is is, they were both supposed to join in the January because they had pre-contract agreements. But Sao Paulo let him leave early. So he joined Gestepi, or joined us in the August, but went straight out on loan to Gestepi.
00:12:06
Zak
right And then he's played he played 26 times there last season and scored seven goals. So he's he's doing all right out there. But and he was one of the players I think we've we've seen we've seen that we haven't seen anything about him in pre-season.
00:12:20
Zak
Looks like he's probably having another lone season there. I don't know if he's going to end up potentially moving there permanently. But, you know, obviously Wellington, different kettle of fish. He was also very close to signing for Torino.
00:12:34
Zak
And that's reported in some sort of Italian media and also Brazilian media. And again, I'll try to get as much as my sources on here, but some of these links have of died over time. And that's kind of where we we lead up to And so so i was then kind of like, oh, I know if I've got enough for a full episode. So this is when I started digging into all the weird stuff, Greg.
00:12:55
Zak
So you're going to get some stats from me as a non-stat person and you being a very stat person. I hope you appreciate it. And if the maths doesn't maths, Blame the websites I've taken them from.
00:13:08
Zak
But I also went back and had a look at his like first interview from from when he first joined the club, ah to which he said he was buzzing to join us because, as always, as they always say, it's a great chance to play in the Premier League.
00:13:21
Zak
Which I know I shouldn't be bitter about because that is a big thing for any player to come and play in the Premier League.
00:13:31
Zak
Obviously, as I said, positive to join and play in the Premier League. And in his first interview, he said he was inspired by by Marcelo, Philippe Luis, ah Roberto Carlos.
00:13:41
Zak
know, Marcelo, the famous Spanish footballer, according to Nathan Wood, in a little bit today. LAUGHTER
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a wonderful, wonderful clip. Thoroughly enjoyed.
00:13:50
Zak
If you've not seen the clip of our players struggling to remember Spanish footballers, absolutely beautiful. Like, the simple answer is always Iniesta, right? Either way, thoroughly enjoyed that.
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:04
Zak
But yeah, so that was that was sort of like how he was before he started, and we didn't really know how he was goingnna you know how he was going to be. His actual league debut, Greg, was in our 2-1 away winner Ipswich.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
craig
00:14:17
Zak
So that was that would not be a feeling that he got used to for the rest of his time in the Premier League.
00:14:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
sit
00:14:23
Zak
out yeah But yeah, it's weird to think he actually had his debut in in a win, one of two wins that we had. So are you yeah, and this is when I started doing my my background digging.
00:14:35
Zak
And we'll get back into that after a word from our partners at Zencastr.
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:15:03
Zak
And we are back.

Market Value and Representation

00:15:05
Zak
So when I left off, Wellington had joined Southampton and he had just experienced his first win and only win.
00:15:14
Zak
with the club so far. so I started having look at sort of the his his profile in bits and pieces and his transfer market stuff and started looking into his agency like I always do.
00:15:24
Zak
Apparently he's currently valued at 3 million euros. So if we ever but do want to sell him, it's not going to be a massive amount, but it'll probably be more than we paid considering that we didn't actually pay anything for him out and out. We just signed a contract with him.
00:15:35
Zak
So as that, I don't know if he's going to be the one of the ones out the door. I very much doubt it. It seems to be, he seems to be one of the left backs that's like, you know, him and Manning probably are the two that look unlikely to stay right.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:47
Zak
So he is represented by ah RF Sports, Sports, ah RF being the initials of his agent. So I had a look into that agency. They have three players on their books, which include Wellington, another Brazilian called Bill, and another Brazilian called Uda, who are both in Brazilian under-20 teams. Nothing crazy, nothing really of note. It seems to be that his biggest client is actually Wellington.
00:16:13
Zak
And he is the one that's been quoted talking to the media previously about when there was European interest and Torino. So it all kind of matches up and makes sense. So this is when and we had to move over to sort of the stats and have a look at like the big things about him.
00:16:28
Zak
So according to SofaScore, his strengths are ground jewels when it comes to defence. And he has no outstanding weaknesses. which is what you want to hear.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's pretty good.
00:16:38
Zak
that's That's perfect.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:39
Zak
You know, if if you want an average a squad player, that's the that's the perfect stats for it, right? like
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Great. Good at defending, has no other weaknesses.
00:16:50
Zak
Exactly.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wonderful.
00:16:51
Zak
So his average score, based on the score he received for all the matches that he played in last season, sat at 6.92, which puts him above, obviously, the normal average score of 6.5.
00:17:02
Zak
So 6.5 is your run-of-the-mill average player, slightly above average. Maybe.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I mean, compared to what I'm sure the rest of the squad was scoring, that's got to be like through the roof.
00:17:13
Zak
ah Well, yeah, obviously it's only over about 10 games, so it's not going to be over the space of the entirety of the season.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:19
Zak
This is, again, what i'll tell tell you about scraping the barrel, Greg. His ah FIFA score is 73, but he can go as high as 80. So if you

Defensive Strengths and Misconceptions

00:17:27
Zak
fancy bringing Wellington into your squad...
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:17:30
Zak
There you go.
00:17:32
Zak
So some of the other stats of note that looked up, 2.1 tackles per game, 2.1 balls recovered per game, 3.3 clearances, and most importantly, which is really important considering our players, Greg, no errors leading to goals.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is impressive, because that that is a stat.
00:17:50
Zak
I would... yeah It's a stat we shouldn't have to check with all of our, you know, main defenders, but at the same time, pretty much all of them, apart from apparently him, have probably at least had one or two last season.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Indeed, yeah.
00:18:05
Zak
So...
00:18:06
Zak
It'll be interesting where he fits in like when it comes to sort of the more attacking play we want to do because he's only managed to have 53% accurate long balls, but his defensive passes are 88% and that's passes within our own half.
00:18:21
Zak
So he seems to be much better ah unfortunately, passing around at the back than than crossing it. Obviously, there's lots of factors involved there, but it was just one of those things where like, if I'm looking statistically at what we're going to need to do,
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's be honest, if we're going last season, nobody was crossing ever, so it's fine.
00:18:39
Zak
Yeah, exactly.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
like
00:18:39
Zak
So hopefully with a bit deep training...
00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
That 53% success rate probably has like a total like collection sample size of like three crosses. Yeah.
00:18:50
Zak
pro Mate would not be surprised considering a lot of this is sort of one, two, three. Again, I felt like two tackles was really low for an average, but there we are.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:09
Zak
Sits mainly just before the final third is where he seems to hang around a lot. So he's waiting to get that ball and get it forward. But unfortunately, he seems to be doing a lot of waiting around that area.
00:19:19
Zak
And not a lot else. And yeah, shorter than our usual stuff, Greg. But that is all of the information that I could find on Wellington. Because also, but there's a Wellington FC, which makes it so much harder because they are an Australian team who recently, I'm pretty sure Wrexham have had a friendly against.
00:19:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, that's great.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amazing. e
00:19:39
Zak
So try to go through search engines.
00:19:41
Zak
You've got to go through six pages worth to even get there.
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even funnier than that, Zach, at the start of this episode, in an effort to try and keep up with some of your stats, I googled Wellington and came up with Wellington FC and then googled Wellington Saints, which are also a New Zealand basketball team.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there was no assistance there.
00:20:00
Zak
You really, so what I discovered is you really have to use his full name.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
six and
00:20:04
Zak
On top of that, because of the way, you know, Brazilian names can be, there are quite a few other footballers named Wellington with different birthdates.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:20:11
Zak
And on top of that, again, when you do find articles that are in Portuguese, it's usually on sort of page eight. and And, like, it's just a bit difficult because some of the summaries of his career are slightly different to the ones in Portuguese.
00:20:23
Zak
I don't know if there's too many translation errors. So, again, when I talk about his youth career playing for Brazil, there there's definitely evidence of the under-23s sort of matches.
00:20:35
Zak
there supposedly Supposedly he captained one of the games in the under-20s. But again, like the links to brazilian like to Brazil's official like website that has all this information, it's just an error 404 because it's either too old, too deleted, or alternatively never existed, which is why I'm a bit like, didn't want to say that he that definitely happened.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:56
Zak
I think that there's a high chance that he was capped at the under-20 level, considering that's how they they got him into the under-23s. But... I want to go out limb and say that's facts. So take this all a pinch of salt.
00:21:07
Zak
I will definitely give Greg the the sources that I have managed to find. and One of which was unfortunately and the Portuguese Wikipedia, because that is the only place that had big chunks of information that didn't seem entirely made up and actual sources that you could have a look into.
00:21:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:23
Zak
But it I think... The thing that surprised me the most is I didn't realise how much he'd played football before he joined here. right like I was aware, I thought he'd come through the sort of youth ranks.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:34
Zak
I didn't realise, despite the fact that he's 24, he has basically played three or four full seasons in you know quite a demanding league and had a lot of appearances during that time. And went through a major injury, came back from that injury, seemingly stronger, and obviously that moved it that that got him a move to Europe.
00:21:51
Zak
So, happy days.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
explains a lot. it Like say, it explains why he looks so settled, why he sort of comfortably like slid in with the team. He looks like a potentially very exciting prospect at fullback, and I look forward to seeing what we manage to get out of him for the rest of the season, because because what we've seen so far is so promising, and it does look good. And, you know, seems to be quite good mates with Matty Fernandes.
00:22:19
Zak
yeah
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know.
00:22:20
Zak
which is important. yeah Anyone that can speech Portuguese at this point should be telling him to stay.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Works for me. Yeah, that's it. Look, it seems to be a good thing for the team. Hopefully he can deliver on this potential and we'll see some great things from him this season.
00:22:34
Zak
Yeah, I'm kind of there, like, even if he doesn't ah necessarily hit the heights we'd expect of him, like, he's shown that he can be a good squad player. And, like, not that we want too many, like, carriers on, I guess, but I don't think from what he's shown so far, he's going to be that.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:22:49
Zak
And, like, I didn't really expect him to dive straight into the team last season.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:22:53
Zak
I thought that he would probably maybe sit in the background, maybe go into the, know, maybe sit in the Premier League 2 team for a little while until he settled in. But he played, you know, 10 games in the Premier League and,
00:23:03
Zak
had to kind of deal with some really, you know, coming in at a really tough point during the season as well. i guess we'll see what he does in the championship and and whether he can become one of the standout stars.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:13
Zak
we We don't know. but

Future with Southampton and Episode Conclusion

00:23:15

Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't wait to see what comes of it this season. and Hopefully we get some really good stuff out of of Wellington and
00:23:39
Zak
Yeah.
00:23:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a position that's going to be an interest interesting one, right? It seems to be kind of key in Will Steele's plan to get high up on the wings with the fullbacks and cut the ball back quite often. It seems to be a pattern that we're noticing. so
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
lots of assists this season. Let's hope.
00:23:57
Zak
Yeah, so that's that's what we we can that's what we can hope for. And that's what hopefully we'll see going forward. But that is the end of our time today. Greg, thanks very much for joining me.
00:24:09
