Speaker: You're listening to the Sleepy Games Podcast.
Speaker: Oscar Watch, our 2025 Oscar nominations and our picks. for next week's show. Well, I guess when this airs, it'll probably the day of.
Speaker: But um we wanted to give our predictions for the Oscars coming up. And a lot of us have not seen all the movies, but we have seen some of the movies on here.
Speaker: um But for for these picks, you don't have to see the movie. Kind the fun of it is just to guess anyway. i like this. Because I will say probably a lot of the general public has not seen a lot of these movies either.
Speaker: So it'll be fun to do this nonetheless. ah around So let's start off with with with the big, ah the main prize, the best picture. Best picture.
Speaker: So this would be tough the toughest one because but there's the most nominees so you might forget some. But you have Anora. You have The Brutalist. A Complete Unknown.
Speaker: Conclave. Dune Part 2. Emilia Perez. I'm Still Here. Nickel Boys.
Speaker: The Substance. And Wicked. The only thing I have seen is Dune. says is is that is that is that your pick?
Speaker: ah You know what? It it is going to my pick because I thought it was pretty well done. yeahp ah like i i mean, yeah. like ah you know I do think it also stands a fair shot at winning even without having seen those other ones, but yeah Yeah. So the problem with Dune, it doesn't have a lot of nominations this year.
Speaker: So usually when that happens, it's not going to win. um Unfortunately. Ah, the politics. I know. That's where the politics come in. So for me, I've seen both of these films that I'm going between.
Speaker: um i think it's going to be between either Conclave or Enora. So if I had to pick one, I'm going to, I think I'm trying to put my mind in the academy avoiders of the Academy.
Speaker: i yeah think because it's a lot more older actors in this. Okay. I'm going to go Conclave. it seems It seems like the safe pick. Okay. Because you got Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow.
Speaker: I feel like they're all like darling yes darling darlings to the to the Academy. Right. so That's my pick. Alright, moving on moving on Best Actor.
Speaker: Best Actor. So we got Adrian Brody in The brute Brutalist. okay Okay. A Complete Unknown. Okay. Coleman Domingo, Sing Sing.
Speaker: Ray Fiennes, Conclave. And Sebastian Stan in The Apprentice, where he plays Donald Trump.
Speaker: Ooh. No, I'm going to go with Ralph Fiennes. Ralph Fiennes? Yeah, okay. Ralph Fiennes, Ralph Fiennes, yeah. Ralph Fiennes, for whatever reason. so So, I think the this is between Adrian Brody, Timothee Chalamet, and Ralph Fiennes.
Speaker: and Okay. Um... I...
Speaker: So Timothee Chalamet just won Best Actor at the SAG Awards. I would not have picked him to win this, but then the SAG Awards happened. So now I'm like, wait, now he might win.
Speaker: Right. And I think Adrian Brody, I think he's kind of fallen off ah i phone off the hype train. So I think it is between Ralph Fiennes and Timothee Chalamet now.
Speaker: Right. i think Just to go against you, i will go get go with Timothee Chalamet. I like that. Yeah. yeah yeah Okay. So, best actress. We've got Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, where she plays the Wicked Witch.
Speaker: Carla, Sofia, Gaston, and Emilia Perez. got Mikey Madison and in Enora. Demi Moore in The Substance.
Speaker: and fernanda torres and i'm still here
Speaker: buck it going gi jane yeah okay so uh so fucking too i'm picking her as well so we can have one we both pick the same one and that's the one because uh demi moore i feel like is the favorite i think it is between her and mikey madison and honora But I think Demi Moore is, and I think she's deserving of this, and I think the Academy wants to give her an Oscar.
Speaker: And I don't think she'll ever be nominated for something like this again. Where I think Mikey Madison, her career is just starting. And I think she'll be up here again. Right.
Speaker: ah So for that, I will give it to Demi Moore. But I do think it's a better performance anyway. Even getting the politics out the way. Hmm. Okay. So, okay, so best supporting actors.
Speaker: We got Monica Barbero in A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande in Wicked, Felicity Jones in The Brutalist, Isabel Rosalini in Conclave, and Zoe Zaldana in Emilia Perez.
Speaker: Hmm. Again, having seen none of these. yeah. I'm out with Zoe Saldana. Okay. so So, so, so she is the favorite to win. Oh, look at me. She is the favorite.
Speaker: and Knowing nothing. She she she has won, i think, every other award. Every other award show, she's won for this category.
Speaker: Okay. So for that, i I'll pick her for this too. Okay. So we we are aligned for a best actress and best supporting actress. Right. There you go. Now this one might be a little little bit a little tougher.
Speaker: So we have best supporting actor. You got Yura Borisov. Sorry, I'm not going to rush the names. He's in Anora.
Speaker: Kieran Culkin, a real pain. edward Edward Norton, a complete unknown. Guy Pearce, the brutalist. And Jeremy Strong.
Speaker: And The Apprentice.
Speaker: Okay, it's one of those things, like, i I'm biased towards Guy Pearce, because just love that guy. Yeah, and I hear he's great in it. Yeah, I just i feel like, for whatever reason, Kieran Culkin might end up winning it. But I'm going to go with Guy Pearce anyways.
Speaker: Okay, you're going Guy Pearce? Yes, I am. Alright, I'm going Kieran Culkin. Yeah, because i yeah I kind of feel like... He's pretty good. Not that I've seen him in lots, but he he is pretty talented.
Speaker: Yeah, and he's really good in this. I've seen this film. um ah Jesse Eisenberg directs it and co-stars with him in this. um But Guy Pearce for the win for me, baby. But Guy Pearce for the win. All right.
Speaker: I thought you going to Edward Noren, actually. Nah. Nah. I liked his earlier career. I thought he just, I don't know.
Speaker: he he's He hasn't been nominated in a long time. Yeah. like Yeah. Well, I mean, not not that I really follow that. To be honest, I can't even name anything he's been in the last 15 years. So the last thing I think I know with him in it was the Hulk.
Speaker: Yeah, that was over 15 years ago. Right, i because I don't think I've seen anything more recent, and, like, I don't know, I didn't really care much for the Italian job in general, so... the most, like, mainstream thing he was in recently was who's in a Glass Onion, where he played, um, it was like a night the Knives Out movie. Yes, yes, actually, you know what, I did see that, so...
Speaker: Okay. He definitely plays an Edward Norton type. But that that's just it. like he's just He's very much like playing to type for sure. so Yeah.
Speaker: i don't know anyway Yeah, Anyways, yeah. So I guess for like the major... so I mean, we don't need to do Best Director. um You probably don't know a lot of these names anyway.
Speaker: um But we could get... I think a fun one would be Best Original Song. Okay, yeah. so well Especially with, you know, the theme of last episode and stuff. Exactly. Yeah, for the last episode, yeah. I like that, yeah. So, her best original song, yeah you have Never Too Late, El and John, El Mar, Amelia Perez, Me Camino, Amelia Perez, Like a Bird, from Sing Sing, and The Journey, from The Six Triple Eight.
Speaker: Which one of those stand out to you? Elton I'm going with Elton John. Elton John, okay. yeah um I'll be a little different on this one. I'm going to go Like a Bird Sing Sing. and Okay. There you go. All right, now let's do best anmate animated feature.
Speaker: Because I talked about this last show as far as this being a between Flo and Wild Robot. so So we have Flo, Inside Out 2,
Speaker: Memoir of a Snail, Wallace and Gromit, Vengeance Most Foul, and The Wild Robot.
Speaker: And like I told you before, I think it's between Flo and The Wild Robot. Yeah, I'm going to say just from your description of it, I'm going to go with Flo because that's a movie that just the way he described it makes me want to watch it. So...
Speaker: So I'm having a tough time deciding which film I like more between Flo and Wild Robot. I will say Wild Robot hit me in the feels a little harder, I think because it has the dialogue to go with it.
Speaker: So I could understand some of the ah more the characters, the motivations and all. and And it was stunning to look at as well. The music in the movie was amazing as well. but There was a lot of...
Speaker: and I think there was just a little more extra punch, I think, as an overall movie. So for that, I will give it to the Wild Robot. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. But I think it'd be a good dumb feature to watch Flo and the wild the Wild Robot together, you're gonna need an animated fix.
Speaker: I mean, you know what? i'm gonna put I'm gonna put a little note on my phone right now. There you go. I'm gonna do this. Give me give me a second here. The Wild Robot and Flo. And Flo.
Speaker: do like double features.
Speaker: Double feature. Okay. Maybe, maybe we can do an upcoming episode or something. We don't do We haven't done animations in a while. know. We anime, but not animations. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. that but That might be a good one to end with. The best animated feature.
Speaker: Because we have best international film. But I think it would... I mean, okay, so Flo is nominated for best international feature.
Speaker: Which is wild. So it's it's a Latvian movie. huh Okay. Kind of crazy, right? I've never seen Latvia in this category for best international feature.
Speaker: So I hope Flo wins. That would be so sick. Right. um I hope more people see it. ah Because I feel like it kind of... i I didn't really know about until like a few weeks ago.
Speaker: it wasn't it was was interesting It wasn't until the nominations came out. I was like, where's this movie flow? But but i think that's what caught on. It's like, oh, it's an animated film with no dialogue. Right. Oh, come on.
Speaker: That's unheard of. So,
Speaker: yeah, you have costume design, best documentary, best cinematography. What about stuntmen? I thought that they were doing that this year.
Speaker: Best stunts or something like that. is Isn't that a thing? they They did that at the SAG Awards. Oh, but not at the Oscars. at the SAG Awards, they had a best stunt ensemble.
Speaker: And guess what won? What? Come on, you can guess. Is it that that that our boys movie?
Speaker: I assume we're the same boy? i need you to guess. I know what it is. but The Ryan Gosling flick? Yes, the Fall Guy. The Fall Guy won, baby. Yeah. Yes, I was so glad it won. See, that's why I knew like actors will know best right when it comes to that. so they they They know like who put the work in, what's deserving.
Speaker: and But no, I don't see this category in for the Oscars. Well, I thought that was the whole point of the movie. They were going to be like, okay, we need this recognition. Well, I'm not sure that they said they're doing it for this year's one or starting it next year. That's the thing.
Speaker: okay. Okay. Because I don't know like how soon you have to lock everything in like as far as like the categories are concerned. Because, like, I don't know. i mean, like, that's a I guess...
Speaker: I guess coming from the trades, i just i have i have a lot of respect for stuntmen because it's like I can't imagine what that does to your body. I know. ah Like every trade fucks up your body, but that one is special. i know what You know what? you wish We should do one more just because I know we haven't seen any of these films.
Speaker: Yeah. And it it'd be fun just to guess. And because like we're talking about animation anyway. So the yeah the Oscars do have best animated shorts. And sometimes like I do like watching the short films that come out.
Speaker: Because a lot of these films are like, what, not even 10 minutes long? maybe Right, yeah. Okay. um So, just baally basing it off the names. Okay.
Speaker: we like this we we We will guess. and And this this is really going to... really gonna but this is this is like the I would say this would be the biggest category for us. Like, where it's all luck.
Speaker: this is supposed to be all luck whoever wins this just go up the name of life the name of land we don't we don't know any of the visuals we don't know how any of this is dominate how many are there how many movies are only five so we have we have beautiful men
Speaker: in the shadow of the cyprus okay magic candies
Speaker: wander to wonder Okay. And finally, Yuck.
Speaker: For best animated shorts. I'm go to go with the one that sounds, ah you know, the most romantic, that the Cypress one. <unk> the Shadow of the Cypress.
Speaker: In the Shadow of the Cypress, yes. Okay, I'm not going to with Yuck. I'm going Yuck. Yeah, that that was going to be my my yeah my number two choice. for So that's good. That's a good spread. I like that.
Speaker: Yeah, so and I think it would be fun to like to watch. if We can see we can watch all these when when they're released. I'm hoping I'll do some digging to see if they're releasing them before the show because I don't know how else to watch it. Like, do they put it on YouTube? Like, you can't go to the movie theater and watch these.
Speaker: I guess maybe maybe you can purchase it on streaming whatever.
Speaker: I couldn't tell you how to get it. I mean, you obviously would know better than I would, so... But anyway, those are our picks. Those are our picks for this year's Oscars 2025. Those are good picks, James. I think we got it. I feel good.
Speaker: and we We have this recorded. We have these saved. I'll make sure to jot these down so it's so so so so we know who picked what. And then, yeah.
Speaker: And then we we will discuss the show later ah once So it airs this Sunday. um So we'll we'll discuss the show in the next episode. And that'll be that.
Speaker: Yeah, i'm I'm looking forward to it. As always. And your boy Conan is hosting. Right. I'm excited for that monologue. i feel he's going to kill it in that monologue.
Speaker: I'm sure he will. Yeah. he He killed the first few seasons of The Simpsons. Yes, he did. Yeah. Back in the glory days. Ah, man. Take me back. Take me back, please. Right.
Speaker: But, yeah. That does it for us. We'll make sure to have this ah the the morning of the show. So, hopefully, my picks win and yours lose. good Damn.
Speaker: But, that's ah's that's all for us. So, cheers. Cheers.
