00:00:00
Speaker
Hello and welcome to Once Upon a DCOM, the podcast where we look back on all of the best and honestly, some of the very worst Disney Channel original movies of our childhood and beyond.
00:00:11
Speaker
My name

Reflections on Season Two and Hopes for Season Three

00:00:12
Speaker
is Natalie and this is my co-host Gabby. Hey everybody! You are listening to one of our mini-sodes. So we just recently wrapped season two of the podcast which first of all, must pause. Gabby, can you believe that we've already done two seasons of this?
00:00:26
Speaker
I'm so proud of us. We've watched so many movies. We've watched so many

The Endless List of Disney Movies

00:00:31
Speaker
movies. And like, I've had ah just some the most delightful time doing this. Same. I love this podcast. And I'm so excited for season three because there are still so many good ones.
00:00:41
Speaker
Like you keep thinking you're going to run out of the nostalgia movies. And then you're like, oh, no, I loved that one, too. Uh-huh. There's just so many, which I guess was the point of this podcast, just to be introduced to more ones to love.
00:00:53
Speaker
But, you know, anyway, we got to move on or we'll keep talking about

DCOM Oscars: Episode Introduction

00:00:57
Speaker
this forever. This is a miniature episode, so we got to go. Okay. and Keep it moving. In today's episode, we are at the DCOM Oscars. We are both dressed in our finest ball gowns, obviously, um and not sweatpants.
00:01:09
Speaker
Oh, ah later tonight to party at zach ephron's house um hope we see you there everyone ah but before all of that we need to hand out some awards so gabby can you please tell us how this episode is going to work and what categories we are giving out today Of course, I would love to.

Award Categories and Season Two Highlights

00:01:27
Speaker
So today we are going to be giving out awards for four amazing categories. We have Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Villain, and Best Romance.
00:01:38
Speaker
And these are just going to be applying for our season two watches. So we are not incorporating the movies from season one. However, we did do this with the same categories for season one. You can find that Yes, please.
00:01:52
Speaker
but i'm so excited let me but through our list of movies that we have to pull from just so everyone knows what we're working with today yes please all right so for season two we have watched in order minute men frenemies teen beach movie descendants the first one rip girls quince high school musical 2 wizards of waverly place the movie the luck of the irish upside down magic den brother brink now you see it dot dot dot the even stevens movie zombies 2 and cheetah girls 2 quite a lot of sequels in season 2 i love it okay so let's dive in who have you nominated for best actress
00:02:33
Speaker
Yes, so for Best Actress, I have three nominations. Are

Best Actress Award Discussion

00:02:37
Speaker
you ready? Yes, I'm so ready. Christy Carlson Romano, Wren in the Even Stevens movie. Okay, okay.
00:02:45
Speaker
hu Christina Vidal, who is Gabriela in Brink! Ooh, okay. Yeah, I know it was a little out of left field, but I thought she did great in that. And finally, and this, for me, just so you know, is my personal pick, Grace Phipps, who plays Layla in Teen Beach Movie.
00:03:04
Speaker
Oh, okay. I did not have any of those. Oh, who you have. Okay, so I'm going to be honest with you. This is the one I struggled with the most. um I, hot take, kind of feel like no one really deserves this award this season. I agree with you, actually. Okay, okay, okay, good. I felt

Best Actor Award Discussion

00:03:22
Speaker
like this was a weak season for these categories, unfortunately. Like, actually, for this whole first set of four categories, because we're going to do a second Oscars, and those categories, I think, fit better with the movies that we had this time around. Okay.
00:03:37
Speaker
So I nominated for Best Actress Ashley Tisdale as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical 2. I considered her. Yes. I feel like that was good. I also considered the girl from Brink.
00:03:48
Speaker
The only reason I didn't put her on here was because her role was so small that I didn't know if it would count. um And then I also put one in here that I knew you would disagree with, but for the sake of saying it, Selena Gomez as Alex Russo in Wizards Waverly Place, the movie.
00:04:04
Speaker
Okay. She did good job. Yeah, you know? She did She did. So I don't know where we want to go from here. Like, what are you what are you feeling? o I don't know. I mean, well, let's talk about our reasons why. i think we can eliminate Christina Vidal for the reason you said.
00:04:20
Speaker
Gabriella's part was great, but small. Right. So for me, Christy Carlson Romano as Ren and Even Stevens, I feel like she is just a consistent talent throughout. We may have nominated her last time for her role in Cadet Kelly, but she's just such a great actress in general.
00:04:38
Speaker
Specifically in the Even Stevens movie, Maybe a little less of that is shown because it's such a comedic, silly role. But the fact that she can do that in addition to the role that she played in Cadet Kelly, which was so serious, I feel like that says something.
00:04:52
Speaker
So I always put her pretty high up. And then Grace Phipps as Layla. I mean, I will say I think I like her better in the second Teen Beach movie, which we haven't seen yet. But you can't can can't put that into account, Gabby. Gotta to be the first one. No, and I'm not.
00:05:06
Speaker
I'm not. That's what I'm saying is I'm trying to not think about the fact that I love her in the second one so much, but I still think she delivered a beautiful performance in this one. Better than the main actress, in my opinion.
00:05:17
Speaker
And you know what? I don't need to explain mine because I don't feel too strongly about them. So i I am on board with your Christy Carlson Romano. Okay. Let's give it to her. Yay. Congrats, k Christy. You won an Oscar.
00:05:29
Speaker
All right. Next category was best actor. Who do you have? Okay. Again, i have three and I think you're going to like them. Okay. I also have three. Oh, okay. So I put Jason Dolly, who is Virgil in Minutemen. Yep. That's my, that's on my list.
00:05:45
Speaker
Yes. Okay. Okay. We may have a winner right there. ah Of course, I put and this has the same problem as Grace Phipps. I put Cameron Boyce as Carlos in Descendants, but I prefer him in the second one. So maybe that one no may have been influenced.
00:06:03
Speaker
We do love you, Cameron, though. Yeah. And then, of course, because obviously, Zac Efron, Troy, High School Musical 2. My boy. um Okay. So I did not put Zephron on my list.
00:06:16
Speaker
What? I know. know. Who are you? i Don't worry. When we get to watch High School Musical 3, he will absolutely be on this list. But High music School Musical 2, not his finest work. And I'm saving it for when he truly deserves it. So he's not on my list. Okay. So I have Jason Dolly. Jason Dolly? Jason Dooley.
00:06:34
Speaker
Dolly. I thought it was Dolly. I don't know. As Virgil in Minutemen. He's so endearing. He's so cute. He's so sweet. He does a great job. My second one, honestly shocked you didn't put this one, um Hutch Dano as Alex in Den Brother.
00:06:49
Speaker
I considered him, yes. But I was like, i don't know if he's really acting or if he was just being himself. Fair. So believable as a lame teenage boy. Right.
00:07:00
Speaker
My third one, um look at me with the most serious face you possibly can. Kyle Howard as Bud Scriff in Upside Down Magic. oh I could give it to him. don't even think about him because he's an adult, you know? He's so good. He's the only good part about that movie.
00:07:20
Speaker
He is. And Upside Down Magic is not going to be in here a lot. so Yeah, perhaps the only time it would be nominated. Okay, but considering his role versus Jason Dolly's role.
00:07:32
Speaker
I know. It's Jason. It's for sure Jason. I think it's Jason. Yeah. Oh, but shout out to you, Kyle Howard. And your voice. And your beautiful voice.
00:07:44
Speaker
Our third category is

Best Villain Award Discussion

00:07:45
Speaker
best villain. And I want to put a caveat on this one before we start, because last time we did this, we were like debating what it meant to be best villain. Right. Okay. So we determined, I just re-listened to our last episode. We determined it was the same as best actor slash best actress, but like with the villain. So like- you know, which one was the best performance of a villain.
00:08:09
Speaker
But then we also did most evil and most enjoyable to watch. So we can have that division as well if we'd like. Okay. I think I forgot what we landed on. I knew we had the debate and I was like, i don't really remember and I don't have time to re-listen. So I have like a hodgepodge of villains here, plus an honorable mention that's not really one of my picks.
00:08:31
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. But I think you should go first this time. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So I have one that you will hate, but I have put high on my list. Okay. Seamus McTiernan from Luck of the Irish. Oh, course you did. Played by Timothy Ogbinson.
00:08:46
Speaker
Just because he's the embodiment of evil and he has his his little red hair and his evil eyes and he is just a villain through and through. He is villain through and through. Okay, go on.
00:08:59
Speaker
Number two, Frank Langella from Now You See It, Evil Man Frank, Magic Man Frank. And then my third one, Miles McDermott from the Even Stevens movie.
00:09:12
Speaker
I think he is a delight in that film. And I didn't even like that movie. Yes. Okay. So we have two the same. Because I also have Max from Now You See It.
00:09:23
Speaker
I also have Miles from the Even Stevens movie. And my third one was Sharpay from High School Musical 2. I considered it strongly. i considered putting her. And then my honorable mention is Time and Space in Minutemen.
00:09:36
Speaker
Okay.
00:09:39
Speaker
Thank you. Thank you so much for that. Thank you. yeah There was not a ton of villains in all of these movies, to be honest. totally agree with you. However, if Megan was here, do you know what my sister Megan would nominate for best villain?
00:09:55
Speaker
The idiot scientist from Teen Movie. The idiot scientist from Teen Beach Movie. Shout out to you, Megan. And I remember her teaching me that his name meant something symbolic. And I was like, that's actually really cool. And I liked that detail, but it didn't make me like him.
00:10:10
Speaker
Was it something about cheese? Yeah, something like that. Because he's cheesy. Megan, call in um and tell us what his name meant. Great. Okay, I think we can agree the most evil Max. Yeah.
00:10:25
Speaker
Yes. from Genuine evil, like, real guy villain. Yeah, he's trying to murder a child and steal his power. Yeah, he's like the villain in Xenon.
00:10:36
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Most enjoyable to watch, though. What are you thinking? I feel like Sharpay is really fun to watch because she just is so extreme and you can see it. Like it makes you cringe, but you're like, I knew her in high school.
00:10:52
Speaker
So it's kind of fun to watch her go. It's true. When she's on the screen, you can't look away. Yeah. Yeah. You're so curious what she's going to do next. Yeah, exactly.
00:11:02
Speaker
And Miles is enjoyable to watch, but you also hate him, whereas I feel like you don't actually hate Sharpay, even though you're kind of supposed to. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
00:11:14
Speaker
I'll give it to Sharpay. All right, cool. I think she deserves it because she's not as much of a villain in any of the other High School Musicals. Like she tries, but this is her true villain era. By the third one, she's more of a nuisance.
00:11:27
Speaker
So this will be her only chance for it. And so next season, it'll be Best Nuisance.
00:11:35
Speaker
Perfect. Okay. Sharpay, you win. Congrats, Ashley Tisdale, because all of you clearly listened to our podcast. All right. We are on to the last

Best Romance Award Discussion

00:11:42
Speaker
category of this episode, which is Best Romance. I got to tell you, this was hard for me. Once again, i was like, oh there's not a lot of this in the movies that we had to work with.
00:11:51
Speaker
I know. There wasn't any clear winner this time, because I feel like last season, we were like Kim and Ron from Kim Possible, obviously. Obviously. Or Gordo and Lizzie. Those were the two.
00:12:03
Speaker
Right. But yeah, this was kind of like I had to dig through the movies and be like, who did I actually enjoy? Yeah, same. Okay, you go first. Okay, so my first one, I have Dorinda and Joaquin from Cheetah Girls 2.
00:12:16
Speaker
Me too. Okay, because you know, they're just the tension is is delightful. And he's just so cute and sweet. And I think that's a sweet little romance. Agree. And then I have Virgil and Stephanie from Minutemen for basically the exact same reason.
00:12:33
Speaker
I considered them. Yeah. And that's all I got for you. I didn't do them, but I considered them. Okay. what do you have? Okay. So I have two others plus an honorable mention.
00:12:46
Speaker
I put Brady and Mac from Teen Beach Movie. And I talked about this in the episode with Megan, but I just really appreciated the like natural organic chemistry that they shared and how realistic their relationship was.
00:12:59
Speaker
So I put them and then I put Ren and Mu Tai slash Jason from the Even Stevens movie. And I knew you were going to put that. I knew you were going put That's no. Even though relationship is mostly fake. Oh, yeah. No, they don't win. I just had to say it.
00:13:13
Speaker
I just, he's so beautiful. And I just love it. Automatic disqualification. Okay. Honorable mention, Ryan and Chad from High School Musical 2. Ooh.
00:13:26
Speaker
They do have better tension than anybody we have named so far. They have the best chemistry of the whole list. They do. But they have publicly discredited the theory that they're together.
00:13:37
Speaker
o I don't know, but I'm kind of for it. Okay, but it we have to give the award to somebody that actually was a romance. We've eliminated Ren and Mutai.
00:13:48
Speaker
So it's Brady and Mac, Durinjan, what's his name? Joaquin. Joaquin. Joaquin. yeah It is spelled like Joaquin. It's really hard to pronounce. Your husband is Hispanic. You were about to have a child named Santiago.
00:14:04
Speaker
Okay, my husband is latin American, not Spanish. Clearly, there's a difference. Clearly. Anyways, oh, and and Virgil and Stephanie, I do really like them.
00:14:18
Speaker
I know, if they are sweet. I feel like Dorinda, though. I feel also strongly towards Dorinda and Joaquin. I feel like that is also a healthy relationship. I don't know if it's realistic, like ah Mac and um Brady, but yeah I'm feeling Dorinda and Joaquin. There's just not enough chemistry between Mac and Brady for me.
00:14:38
Speaker
Agreed, which is why it's so realistic. It's not just like movie romance. It's like everyday romance, which is, you know... Real life. But also, I'm not rooting for them in the same way I'm rooting for Dorinda and Joaquin.
00:14:54
Speaker
um Joaquin. Joaquin. um And I feel like Virgil and Stephanie, their romance is never even solidified. Like it's obvious that it's there, but they don't even have a kiss. So yeah, no. Right. And Stephanie is such an idiot for the first half of the movie.
00:15:11
Speaker
She, yeah, she really is. Anyway. Okay. This episode's getting too long to be mini. So we got to wrap this up. Yep. Cheetah Girls 2, Dorinda and Jo Quinn, Jo Kwan, Hakeem. Congratulations.
00:15:22
Speaker
Not Hakeem. Yeah. All right. Congratulations to all of our winners. We're so proud of you. you guys, thank you for entertaining us through the years. We will be back with

Upcoming Episodes and Teasers

Speaker
another mini episode of the DCOM Oscars in a month because next week we have a very, very exciting special episode.
00:15:44
Speaker
Next week's mini episode is going to be the first fictional DCOM Where Are They Now? So this is basically like fanfic fever dream of where we believe that the characters of these movies would be in 2025. And let me just tell you, I've done my prep work already and it's going to get crazy.
00:16:05
Speaker
So y'all don't want to miss it. Oh, you're going to love mine. going to love mine too. This is perhaps going to be, if it turns out the way I think it's going to, it's going my favorite episode we've ever done. and it's a mini-sode.

I have a feeling that this, yep, I'm feeling the same way. So come back in two weeks for our Disney fanfic of Where Are They Now? And then in a month, we're going to do our second round of Oscars. We will see you there.
