Zack: And welcome back to the Next Guy Up podcast, where all of us are losers this weekend. Welcome to the party.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Losers, losers, losers, losers, losers.
Zack: ah Yeah, if you if you've listened for any amount of time, you know that um all of our teams lost. And so if you're here just to listen what we have to say, welcome, I guess.
Zack: it's gonna There should be some fun stuff talked about, I think, some fun conversations. Tens is in a really, has a good attitude about it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Really good attitude.
Zack: And we're we're excited to get to break down some football. we did have, there was some fun football, even though our games did not turn out the way we hoped. It was lot of football to talk about. And, you know, we were here as a service to the community. And so we're still going come. We're still going provide you the content that you need to stay up to date.
Zack: We're going to review all the games as painful as it might be. It's what we do around here. You know, how how are we doing, fellas?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Listen, we're doing great ah Here's the thing One day there won't be any more football Football will be over No one will be here to watch it But you know what will never leave?
Zack: sure
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Mountain Dew Mountain Dew is a staple of America It's not going anywhere And here's the thing about Mountain Dew is They are always coming out with new flavors and So today, live on the pod We're doing a test of our brand new Mountain Dew Cherry
Zack: Wow.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Cherry lemon. So that's the red and yellow one. Mountain Dew, Trolley, Gummy Worm.
Zack: Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Mason can't eat these because it's red.
Zack: That would kill Mason.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He can't eat red things. um But here we go.
Mason: Trolley. what's What makes it the trolley?
Zack: Yeah, it's like the gummy worm flavors.
Mason: Oh, I just heard the crack open.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Gummy worms.
Mason: All right.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Look at the can. Here we go.
Mason: I see it.
Zack: Wow, this is exciting. didn't even know was going to happen.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Wow, this is a pretty good soda. I'd say that's 7.7. It's a good backup to Code Red.
Zack: That's pretty good.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah Speaking of backups, Jake Browning must be the most amazing backup quarterback in the world.
Zack: Uh...
Mason: Describe it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i hate this guy. Jake Browning, I know you listen to podcasts. I listen to a podcast you also listen to. You're going to shout-out over there. i have to listen to it. I hate you. I hope this finds you. All you do is ruin my life.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The last time the Jaguars were good two years ago, we were 8-3 on Monday Night Football, and you replaced Joe Burrow for injury, and you guys killed us. And then today we're winning. We're having a great day. We hurt Joe Burrow.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And then what happens? You come in You throw three interceptions. It doesn't even matter. you you still win. So Jake Browning, just just like Mountain Dew Trolley Cherry Lemon, is a good backup to Mountain Dew Code Red.
Zack: Wow.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Jake Browning is an amazing backup to Joe Burrow. So congrats.
Zack: That's true. Wow. That was incredible. ten
Mason: How do I even follow up with that?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Thanks. Yeah, Mason, how are you? Where's your thing?
Mason: um I'm good. and Hold on. Let me go to the fridge. Let me pick out a soda that no one's heard of before.
Zack: It's good.
Mason: So but brand new.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: These just came out.
Zack: This new Mason.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: These just came out.
Mason: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yep.
Zack: We're cutting edge.
Mason: And does it taste like gummy worms? Yes or no?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, does it does taste like the gummy worms pretty good. They're actually sugar-free. um you let us Let me see if you can drink this. Carry on while I read. ah Red 40. It's right there.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You can't have it.
Zack: a
Mason: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Instant death for Mason.
Mason: Instant.
Zack: Okay.
Mason: Forever. Yep. Go ahead, Zach.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yep.
Zack: That was great.
Mason: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I figured I'd give the people what they need because people care more about Mountain Dew than they do football.
Zack: I don't know how to respond to that. I needed that.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Like, who cares? football but who cares I've not been looking forward to football all summer waiting for its comeback. No, I've been waiting for this stupid Mountain Dew to come out, and it's really good, and I'm really happy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm really pumped up.
Mason: Okay.
Zack: ah Yeah, I'm also pumped up. um Tins suffered from the the classic backup quarterback bump when they come in the middle of the game.
Zack: Everyone knows that they got the juice. It's just it is what it is. The curse.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: like Couldn't the Saints have offered this guy some money to come be their starter instead of Spencer Rattler so then I don't have to deal with him today?
Zack: No, it's because that once ah once they've played a game, it's it's gone.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: like What are we doing?
Zack: It's only for one game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No.
Zack: That's how the quarterback bump works.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No, Jake.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I hate Jake Browning.
Mason: You're saying the backup quarterback bump? Because remember, we went through this last year with Malik Willis.
Zack: Yes, or a new quarterback.
Mason: Okay.
Zack: Yeah, it's like um Josh Dobbs has pulled off. Jameis Winston is famous for this. He's kind of made a career out of it at this point. You come in and you come in and your first game, you look incredible.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm glad you said that.
Zack: You got the juice. Everyone's pulling for you. But then your second game, it's much worse. So Tins just fell trapped to the quarterback bump.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He didn't have the juice. He threw three interceptions. The refs had the juice for him. um We'll get to that. hold back a second.
Zack: The defense doesn't have their on...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: back for a second
Zack: they're like film on ready to go. You know, they've prepared for Joe Burrow, not for Jake Browning to be mediocre. and
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's because teams come in, they're like, they when the backup quarterback comes in because of an injury, they get all conservative because like, oh, it's the backup quarterback.
Zack: It's just enough.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's not good. He's still in the NFL.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's not like the backup quarterbacks, Spencer Rattler or Mac Jones, like a terrible backup quarterback who can't actually do anything.
Zack: But they're, they're starters in the NFL. Okay.
Zack: Okay.
Mason: Hey, Mac Jones got the win today, so...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No one cares.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No one cares. Football's, the NFL's going to go away.
Zack: It will eventually, but Mountain Dew never will.
Mason: What does he mean by that?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: One day. now I'm two is never going anywhere.
Zack: Okay. Well, we got a lot of we had a lot of analysis for you today, everybody. We're we're pretty excited. um We are going to go through some of our categories, talk about the best of the weekend, the worst of the weekend.
Zack: um We already have gotten to some of the worst of the weekend. So early in the episode, feel good about that. We got that out of the way. We, uh, we're also gonna, we have a big announcement. Our next best of the rest game, um, where we're going to travel to, to watch this game live. Right.
Zack: was thinking about it.
Mason: Oh, Tennessee Tech?
Zack: Mason,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: up
Mason: oh
Zack: not Tennessee tech, uh, let's Let's go ahead and announce it now we We have chosen our best of the rest. We're going to give a little bit of analysis of of the last week's best of the rest game.
Zack: ah The best of the rest series is traveling to Miami, Ohio for a huge game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Let's go.
Zack: UNLV at Miami, Ohio. Three and a half points spread. ah There's some fun teams there. UNLV is up there in contention for a G5 playoff spot.
Zack: ah Dan Mullen and the boys. He's got them cooking. ah We are excited to break that game down for you. oh Do we want to just go ahead and recap last week's best of the rest?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, let's talk about it a little because it was ah a fun game.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And we our breakdown was pretty right about pretty good.
Zack: Pretty Pretty good. pretty good
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I mean, we gave out the bet. it It was kind of a thing where we we get...
Zack: Yeah, we should. We gave out a bad bet.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. Well, we liked the over, but it had moved so much from when we first looked at it.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Um, we would have been fine to still give it out anyway. Um, and we did, and we did say that on the pod.
Zack: I know we got scared.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: We said we liked, we liked the over, um, but we didn't make it our official bet. We made it a, a field goal in the first half the bet, which one they hit one, uh,
Zack: but That was bad bet. Yeah, they should have hit too They got scared.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Well, um the quarterback for App State threw like two, I think it was two red zone picks. So that those one of those could have been a field goal for sure. But ended up being a fun game.
Zack: Definitely. yeah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I watched a little bit of the the first half towards the end just seeing if maybe we'd get a field goal. And then a little at the end just to see what was going on because I did bet the over anyway.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So still got that.
Zack: Yeah, just so just a little bit of um if we wanted a little bit of a breakdown just to see how it went. USM ended up winning 38-22. you remember correctly, i said that I felt like the quarterback was going to have a big day, Braylon Braxton, Sunbelt off Offensive Player of the Year at the beginning.
Zack: He ended up with 280 and two touchdowns, and he also ran for 27 yards. He did that one pick, but he ended up getting the win.
Zack: So had a pretty good day. don't if you can bet him some belt player of the year, but it might be worth of it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Might be a look.
Zack: Yeah, but we're we're excited. I think it's been a fun series so far, just getting to dive into some teams you don't normally get to see. We are going to hit Tulane at some point because they are the overwhelming favorites from the G5 at this point.
Zack: I think they're like plus 380. They're on bye week.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: And they play Oklahoma two weeks from now.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Ooh.
Zack: Fun game. Could be a very fun game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Fun.
Zack: So that could be big one. But we are excited to continue that series. ah We have another new... we have we' We've launched a couple new segments this season. um Here's a new segment.
Zack: Should that field have gotten stormed? um We did have a field storm yesterday, so it's time to break it down. Should it have gotten stormed? ah Georgia Tech takes down Clemson.
Zack: Big game. clemson or Georgia Tech all of a sudden has picked up a couple of big wins already. Looking pretty frisky.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Mm-hmm.
Zack: ah Taking down Clemson, who is now 1-2 on the season. Their one win was against Troy. It was not pretty. um Clemson's not great. Storm the field.
Zack: Personally, i think that's a good field storm. You're Georgia Tech. You're playing Clemson. I think that's the equivalent of maybe like, i mean, Clemson is is a perennial powerhouse. Obviously, they were down a little bit last year. Georgia Tech had a good season.
Zack: um I think that might be all for Georgia Tech's field storms, though. I think i think they're done. They've had two big wins this season. I think if they beat Georgia, no field storm.
Zack: I think they're done at this point.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Zack: You hit your good. Everyone knows you're a good team. It's not a surprise anymore. You're going to be like a top 15 rated team. Probably. I'm not sure they came out in today's rankings, but they should be if they're not ah maybe top 10 at this point.
Zack: No more field storms. That's my take.
Mason: They shouldn't ah storm the field versus Temple.
Zack: Nope. They're done.
Mason: i put this in the group text. I said, act like you've been there before. ah They were only a three-point underdog. It wasn't like insane, like 20-point upset underdog type of situation.
Mason: i ah just... I don't know.
Zack: It is Clemson, though. It's like if you're a ah mid-level, not this season, but they're just they've been good for a long time.
Mason: As close or good this season, don't know.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They've ran the conference.
Zack: They beat a lot of people.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: Yeah.
Zack: um Georgia Tech, also they do get to play Georgia later on um That's ah like a neutral side, I think, there, right?
Zack: um So they have some big games, but I think that was their one.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: i think that's like a nice in-conference rival. I feel okay about it.
Mason: It's a Mercedes Benz Stadium.
Zack: Yeah, I think that one is a neutral site typically. so But congrats to Georgia Tech.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: our Big win for the boys.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Huge win.
Zack: And all of a sudden, that Georgia Tech team looking pretty good. Ains King.
Zack: good Good football player.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Good football player. No one said he's a great passer of the ball, but he's a good football player.
Zack: Okay.
Zack: Doesn't have to be.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Makes things happen.
Zack: He's a dog.
Zack: Okay. Do we want to jump into categories? You guys have anything else before we get there?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Nope. Category it up.
Mason: I do
Zack: Okay. So remember our new rules for categories as we go through these. If ah we've all established our, our list, if we overlap with any of the other two guys, we get a point at the end of the season where as the most points we'll have a punishment.
Zack: um Tens and I both have one point. Mason is zero because he's a coward.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He is a coward.
Zack: All right, we ready?
Mason: Wow. I know how to play the game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's true. No, that's all right.
Zack: Some of us want to provide good content to the people.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You'll slip up
Zack: Some of us want to pick Idaho State ah performance of the week.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and call Michigan our fraud of the week.
Mason: Listen, i was not wrong. They lost the next. We're not doing this. we We've already established that they are. So let's continue.
Zack: Okay. ah Game of the week. Mason, you want to first?
Mason: Yeah, I'll start us off.
Zack: OK.
Mason: I have Cowboys, Giants, and Dallas. Five lead changes in the fourth quarter. George Pickens does a beautiful flat route catch with 52 seconds left. You think Cowboys are going to win the game?
Mason: And then Malik Nabors catches a 48-yard touchdown catch with 25 seconds left. Uh, and then, so then they're only down by three.
Mason: ah wait, Cowboys kicker goes in. Aubrey kicks a 64 yard field goal to bring it to overtime.
Zack: Mm-hmm.
Mason: Overtime was kind of a little bit of a, like nobody was really doing anything, but then, ah Aubrey went to kick a 46-yard field goal to win the game, forty to thirty seven ah Russell Wilson looks like Seahawks Russell Wilson, 400 yards, over 400 yards passing, and Scadaboo became the main back with a touchdown and got a majority of the reps for the Giants. So, yes, Tins, why did you throw your hands up?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Just stop talking about Russell Wilson. He might be someone's stuff later. What are you doing?
Mason: Oh, his stuff. like
Zack: Yeah, chill out.
Mason: I'm not allowed to talk about the quarterback on the team of the game of the week that I brought up.
Zack: No.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No.
Mason: No.
Zack: Okay, my game of the week is Jags Bengals.
Mason: Okay.
Zack: I'm just kidding.
Zack: It was a fun game, though. Fun game. ah No, my game of the week was ah a tragic heartbreaker, but I did pick Tennessee, Georgia. I thought we should have, we should talk about a little bit here.
Zack: um Very fun game. Back and forth the whole way. Tennessee blasted out of the gate. An eight play scoring drive to start. And then they went up 21 to seven.
Zack: Offensively looked pretty incredible. Chris Brazel, three touchdowns. Joey Aguilar, like 280 yards. ah He had a couple of picks, but most of them weren't not really his fault. He had a really good game.
Zack: ah Georgia i mean also looked pretty good. It it really looked like two pretty good teams out there for most of it. ah Georgia picked on the cornerbacks who were injured, which is to be expected. That's what you would do if your team, both of their starting cornerbacks were out.
Zack: It ended up in tragedy for Tennessee fans after a missed field goal at the buzzer that would have won it. and They lost in overtime. A a truly truly heartbreaking game for me and for Tennessee fans everywhere.
Zack: But at the same time, the new AP poll is out. We didn't drop at all. i think I think of anything, most of the country saw that some of the biggest question marks for the Tennessee team got answered. um Quarterback position looks really good.
Zack: Wide receiver position looks good. ah Defense still it looks okay. I think there's some injury problems there, but other than that, they look pretty good. Offensive line looked very solid against a Georgia defensive line that typically is very good. So,
Zack: All things considered, I think there is worse things that have happened to Tennessee. Georgia came out on a very, very, very tough road environment with a big win. So um across the SEC, I mean, I think there's potential. This could be an SEC championship matchup if things fall that way for Tennessee.
Zack: um i think both these are really good teams. It was a very fun matchup in Neyland Stadium that did not one kick went the wrong way. But other than that, Pretty fun game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I agree. I think Joey Aguilar really showed that he he is the right quarterback for the system. I don't think we would look the same if Nico was here, to be honest.
Zack: Shame.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: He's a one and done.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: me
Zack: Yeah, is very Hinton Hooker like and just.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah
Zack: ah you You're plugging in an older guy into a system that may pick it up pretty quick, and then but they just have one year. That's just how how the cookie crumbles. They're plugging old guys into systems.
Zack: So we better make them count I agree He did things Nico never It was like final was gross
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: o tough making significantly less money 34 34 34
Zack: um
Mason: Easiest bet of my life. i had New Mexico, would was a huge the spread, by the way, 15 points, and they ended up winning what was it, by 15 points?
Zack: it was like twenty five ten final it was like gross
Mason: Yeah, something crazy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: good
Mason: Yeah.
Zack: 34. There you go. Not good.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: not good
Zack: um i think there's potential. that i know the transfer portal window opens in a weird way if you lose your coach midseason. So from what I've heard, it's like because they've only played three games, a lot of the players could do like a red shirt and they could go ahead and like enter the transfer portal.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Oh, please.
Zack: So UCLA season literally could be over. um They could be on 12. I think there's ah it's a real possibility.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That would be.
Zack: If Nico decides he wants to transfer, they could be cooked.
Mason: Well, if he decides to play, they'll be cooked.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: oh man. Yeah.
Zack: Yeah, I mean, they're cooked regardless, but if he leaves, I mean, they're going to be by far the worst team in the Big Ten.
Mason: Yeah.
Zack: Like, not even close.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: but lot they they might already be.
Zack: Your schedule is hard. Yeah. So, you love to see it for Nico and the boys over there. Pretty fun stuff.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Oh, I love it.
Zack: It's very funny.
Zack: Okay, 10s, game of the week.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: All right. Uh, my game of the week was the Patriots versus dolphins, uh, back and forth game.
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Patriots, uh, lose a game last week that many people, they were the favorites against the Raiders. Um, dolphins obviously get absolutely blown out by the Colts and are just the worst vibe team ever.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Tyree kill is getting mad at reporters all week, asking him questions about why he hasn't caught a 30 yard pass and now over a year. Um,
Mason: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Just he does not want to be there. Multiple blow ups on the sideline today. Back to back special teams touchdowns. The Dolphins take a punt return 74 yards back for a touchdown, followed up by Antonio Gibson for the Patriots, taking back a 90-yard kick return ah the following play.
Zack: um
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So special teams, fun fun game back and forth. Patriots end up winning a close one, and we are one game closer to the Dolphins having the worst record in the league.
Zack: Yeah, that was a big one for the boys right there. needed it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And, you know, that's just a bet that somebody on this podcast gave out in the middle of the summer.
Zack: True.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and didnt didn't start talking about it after week one like some podcasters.
Zack: They might be competing against the Titans for that.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No, no, you guys are not the worst team.
Mason: I don't even think the Saints are the worst team. They still was like, i know it was Matt Jones and everything, but yeah, they're frisky enough.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They're frisky enough.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They'll win a game or two. I don't know that the Dolphins will.
Zack: This stuff.
Zack: Okay. Next category. We have performance of the week. This is a player position group who had a particularly solid performance.
Zack: Mason. Mason.
Mason: I have Diego Pavia. So you say his last name, uh, and Vanderbilt in general.
Zack: Mm. Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: I know it's like, do you just pick a player or is it player team?
Zack: Yeah, this slot, I mean, it can be whatever you want it to be. 31 10.
Mason: Okay. Uh, well I was watching college game day and Kirk Herbstreet was only one to pick Vanderbilt. They were three point underdog and then they ended up winning outright, uh,
Mason: ah Quite a bit of it. Yeah. What was the 31 to seven or I have 31 to seven on here, but yeah, 31 to seven against South Carolina and South Carolina.
Zack: thirty one ten
Zack: Oh, I'm wrong.
Mason: So I'm going to give it to Vanderbilt three and O star.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Sellers got hurt, unfortunately.
Mason: Love it.
Zack: That was after Sellers left.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: Yeah.
Mason: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I kept looking at the the box score and kept showing that a wide receiver was the leading passer. And I was like, what's going on in that game? Then I looked and Sellers got hurt.
Mason: Sellers got hurt.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I hope you took Vandy over wins because they are looking pretty good, folks.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Looking pretty good.
Zack: I think I gave that one out. ah Four and a half over. So they're three.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Went away.
Zack: Yeah, they're looking pretty good.
Mason: Snapped a 16-game losing streak against South Carolina, by the way.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: don't know, four and a half.
Zack: It's pretty good. Yeah, South Carolina, who was um the preseason, they were getting a lot of hype.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: think we can.
Zack: Obviously, Lenora Sellers, I mean, you can't can't help that.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Mm-hmm.
Zack: But even before that, they were not looking very good. um And without Lenora Sellers, boy, they're going to struggle.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: So that's a good one.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That was my game to watch. That was my game like to keep an eyeball on for friday's or Thursday's episode because I wanted Sellers to come out and prove he's the Heisman candidate he's supposed to be.
Mason: Mm-hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Hard to do that in the medical tent.
Zack: Very true.
Zack: Okay, my performance of the week. This might have be been my week one performance of the week, actually. Haynes King, we're back. ah Georgia Tech quarterback. ah This guy is electric. He and basically put the team on his back.
Zack: He had, like, none of his numbers just do not look look crazy, but if you watch the game, you understand kind of impact he has. He just got the whole defense waiting around to see what he's going to do because he can run it.
Zack: ah he mean He has the ability to pass it, and he kind of took ah he just takes over the game when it gets to the crunch time. He's the guy you want with the ball. um and It was fun to watch.
Zack: Shout Tech.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Shout out.
Zack: Tens?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah My performance of the week was Russell Wilson after a very bad week one. ah They were already calling for Jackson Dart. This guy comes out, throws for, yeah, some people still are.
Mason: Mm-hmm.
Zack: Some people still are.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um
Zack: me cool
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i would I would definitely be if I still had him on my fantasy team, but had to drop him. and Zach went and got him. Anyway, ah Russell Wilson, 450 yards passing, three touchdowns in a very back and forth game. They could have definitely won, um especially if they had a good running back who wasn't Cam Scadaboo, who's terrible. I don't know why we... He had like a really bad fumble.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um um I'm out on Cam Scadaboo.
Zack: yeah touchdown I think right don't know
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's just... and Yeah, 11 carries for 45 yards and touchdown, but he had a fumble. He's just a ah he's just Peyton Hillis. That's who he is.
Mason: Oh, yeah. On a video game, though.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i
Mason: Pretty successful.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I know, but I just like i don't want to hear all this. Keep Tyron Tracy. He's really good. He catches a lot of passes, and I might have him on some dynasty teams.
Mason: I was shocked by the snap percentage difference. Yeah, Scadaboo got the majority of the snaps. Like, more than they did.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I don't. Yeah, I don't like that. I like Tracy.
Mason: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I think Tracy should continue being the guy catching passes. But anyway, Russell Wilson just just really kind of turned back the clock a little bit today.
Zack: um
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: it would have been really awesome for him to pull out that win. But good to see old Russell Wilson still have a couple games in him like that.
Zack: Shout out. You got to have a couple.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's electric.
Zack: Yeah. All right, to Mason. We are looking at surprise of the week.
Mason: My surprise of the week is a, ah just kind of a fun fluke play. The Seahawks and Steelers kickoff that never got touched and returned in the end, uh, recovered in the end zone by the kicking team.
Zack: Pretty bad.
Mason: Um, this is change. I believe the rules got changed and they didn't understand, but usually if it does bounce into the end zone on a kickoff, it's just blown dead. But now that it got kicked into the, what do they call it? Tends the, uh,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The landing zone, yeah.
Mason: Landing zone. They call it the landing zone. ah So no one ever touched it and it got returned. So that was just a fun little surprise random little thing for the... I've not seen a play like that ever happen. I think I did that once in Madden before, but I don't think I've ever seen a play like that happen. So...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: As someone who bet on Steelers' money line, i didn't think it was fun or cool.
Zack: True. was pretty important.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, kind of swung the momentum.
Zack: I remember back in the day there was a play there was a play where field goal got blocked and everyone just kind of like went on with their business and then someone picked it up and just ran it because it was actually a live ball.
Zack: like It was one of those, it's like if everyone else is standing around, then it's like, ah, okay, I guess it's fine. and then
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: So, heads up play there.
Mason: it's part like It's probably like that, and then, of course, I wasn't around for this, but when the band was on the field, and they like returned, ah ah what was it, returned to kickoff or something, and the band was still on the field?
Zack: That awesome. Yeah, Stanford.
Mason: Ran into the t trombone player?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: Yeah.
Zack: The band is out on the field.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The band is on the field.
Mason: but
Zack: Electric. um
Zack: So I was actually going to pick the van. I was to pick Vanderbilt for this, but just for the sake of content, I'm going to change it. I have something else talk about because I want to touch on this game. ah So I'm changing it to the Florida Gators.
Zack: um I predicted and they were going to have a comeback type week. They were going to cover the spread against LSU. They're going to be competitive because I didn't think they were as bad as I thought as they played against USF.
Zack: um e Does anyone know how interceptions that DJ Lagway threw?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Is it four? No, Five, yeah.
Zack: Five interceptions. Five.
Mason: Wow.
Zack: ah This final score is 20 to 10. It was not that close. LSU really played played pretty safe and slow. they've They easily could have put up some more points on this one.
Zack: ah This Florida team, ah boy, they they did all great.
Mason: Thank you.
Zack: And so I honestly was just surprised. like I thought they were going to come back. i thought they going competitive. We're going to show that it was kind of a fluky game. That was not the case. They look pretty bad. Laguerre looked pretty bad.
Zack: um At least their schedule is super easy moving forward, right?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right.
Zack: Let me tell you. I'm just going to read it. in ah They go to number now, number four, Miami, whose looks very good. They crush USF.
Zack: ah They've had a very good start to their season. Then they host Texas. They go to Texas A&M. They play Mississippi state. They host or they, they play Georgia.
Zack: Uh, and then they also have to play Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida state number seven ranked to end the season. Uh, I mean, this could be a four eight football team and it's not even that much of this.
Zack: Like, it's not a stretch at this point.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: They're one in, they're one and two. Um,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, it's tough.
Zack: I mean, they could be a three and nine team, really. So surprise, I truly didn't think um that this this was going to be the reality.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: But here we are.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, no, that that's a good segue because I i had DJ in my Surprise of the Week as well, but I'll just stick with – going to have him and Arch Manning.
Zack: Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um These are two guys going into the season, has some Heisman hype.
Mason: Mm-hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: A lot of people were hyping up DJ. lot of people hyping up Arch Manning. He was the Heisman favorite going into the year.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And he has not looked the part at all. ah He went 11 for 25, one touchdown, one interception for 114 yards against the mighty and powerful UTEP Miners.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um I don't know. This is just not the star-studded five-star quarterback prospect that everyone thought coming into the season.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So I'm i'm surprised. I thought i was going to have to eat some crow on Arch Manning. I've been saying for a while that he was a three-star with the last name Manning, so it made him a five-star. So far, I'm right.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And normally, I'm pretty wrong about guessing these quarterbacks. Famously said, Jane Daniels wasn't going to be very good.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Now, sophomore slump might prove me a little bit right, but...
Mason: You did say ah CJ Stroud was going to have a... He wasn't very good. No. I don't know. We might be finding that out.
Zack: True.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: CJ Stroud's not been playing very well, has he?
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Stick with me long term. But... Yeah.
Zack: Yeah, you throw you throw sellers in the mix and all of a sudden your your Heisman favorites to begin the season are not looking very good.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Zack: Sellers is obviously injury, but at this point, none of them are looking great.
Mason: I think it's the quarterback for the for Oklahoma is the
Zack: John Mateer.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's the favorite.
Mason: the Yeah, he's the favorite, I think.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: ah Whatever.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Or somebody else jumped up. I can't think of he plays for. ah Sorry.
Zack: Yeah, there's just not a lot of like there's not a lot of running backs who are making huge waves right now.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: kind of It's very quarterback heavy, but there's there's no one that's just sitting at the top kind of by themselves.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The Penn State guy who transferred, Bo Pillar, where is he playing?
Zack: Oh, Missouri.
Mason: So...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah Okay. I thought I saw...
Zack: Bo Perbula.
Mason: I don't and don't see him on this list.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, Perbula. Okay, thought someone said hit him.
Mason: ah John Mater, Carson Beck, Dante Moore, ah Garrett Nussmeyer.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Carson Beck.
Zack: yeah Dante Morris at Oregon. Dennis Myers LSU.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I put a future on Oregon. I'll just go... It's plus a thousand.
Zack: To win it all?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: Pretty good. Their path is easier than most.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I put a future on it.
Zack: Their path to the playoffs is like almost guaranteed at this point.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: So it's not a bad bet.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: Ohio State and Oregon are like essentially in the playoffs. really
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right. Exactly. It's just crazy, but they are.
Zack: Which is really sucks, but it is the way the Big Ten is.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Penn State probably is too.
Zack: you only have When you only have one or two big games a year and then you can lose two and still make the playoffs, it ends up, guess what? You're going make some teams basically be in the playoffs automatically.
Zack: Okay.
Zack: Hurry down to fraud of the week.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I think so.
Zack: Oh boy. Mason fraud of the week.
Mason: So technically 10 sniped me, but I guess that's payback for me ah bringing up Russell Wilson already. I hate that we're using fraud of the week because I wish I could just change it to not who we thought they were award because it's a little harsh.
Zack: Mason, that's how you, this is clickbait. Come on.
Mason: I know it is. if What's going to happen is you all say these things and then I'm going to say Arch Manning is fraud of the week and you're going to clip this in a thing and I'm going to get a bunch of hate mail.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Come on. Pride of the week.
Zack: And all the Texas fans will be mad at you. It's going be funny.
Mason: But I don't want to recycle content, but I have different stats. August 30th, he was the favorite for Heisman. September 6th, he was 6th with plus 1,800.
Mason: Saturday, he was plus 1,500, which was still tied for 6th. And then now he's ah plus 2,500, which it's also changed because I just looked, but it was tied for 9th. Did you mention the 10 consecutive incompletions he had?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Nope.
Mason: That was like the first time that's happened the like and ah really long time for any ah FBS quarterback.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's great. I mean, it's just like, I don't know. It's weird. s Sark just isn't. It just, it's like he doesn't trust him to throw the ball. And Josh, our friend, Josh, our friend, Josh brought up.
Zack: he probably doesn't wow got him
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He thinks he's hurt. I don't care that he's then don't play like that. ah
Mason: So...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Cause he looks bad. mean, he does. He just doesn't look like he can throw the football.
Mason: He's tied for 16th now at plus 3,500. Ty Simpson has better odds.
Zack: it's not good
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i think I think it's a good thing.
Mason: was...
Zack: hidden
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: oh wow, that's bad. I think it's a good thing the Titans didn't listen to Zach about the double tank and tried the double tank for Arch.
Zack: That's a fact. Yeah, i don't want him.
Mason: i was I know we were talking about fraud of the week, but real quick while I have the mic, ah the electric game that was my O.L.I.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: What is it?
Mason: for a game of the week was that Notre Dame Texas Tech game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, but Texas A&M.
Mason: there was i I stayed awake for that. You're a Texas A&M. Yes. Sorry.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: you Mason, you don't get credit for staying awake on a Saturday night until like 8.30.
Mason: Texas A&M.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You just don't.
Mason: 41 to 40. we thought Notre Dame was going to win. i think there was like 18 seconds on the clock. That touchdown was electric. I was still awake.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It was awesome.
Mason: I was still awake.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: as a guy As a guy who bet Texas A&M last week and talked about on the pod because I thought it was at Texas A&M and then Zach broke the news to me that it was Notre Dame and I was like, oh no, I'm in danger.
Zack: well Well, while we're here, that Notre Dame is my fraud of the week.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Still won.
Zack: So thanks, Mason, for the ah a snipe of pick that wasn't even yours. just because you wanted credit for staying late.
Mason: you
Zack: hope you're hope you're happy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It wasn't late.
Zack: ah Notre Dame fraud of the week for me. 0-2. They've only played two games and lost both of them. They have they are winless right now um college football season.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Full shame.
Zack: and So if you want to hear my real analysis, Notre Dame's played some pretty good teams. Their schedule gets much easier after this. They do have to travel to Arkansas, which is not...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: That's low-key a little bit going to be a fun game probably because Notre Dame will be fighting for its season.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: At Arkansas, as Tennessee learned last year, is not the easiest place to play for sure, and they're going to be hyped up for that game. um But Notre Dame has has lost to two very good teams, but they've still lost to them. So my my clickbait version of this take is Notre Dame joined a conference,
Zack: you You schedule two or three kind of mediocre games a year, and now you lost two of them. You're cooked. The playoffs committee is never going to let you in with two losses. um The reality is they probably will anyways, unless they lose another one, which is a huge bummer for everyone involved.
Zack: Notre Dame. I mean, they obviously had a good season last year. they They've lost to Miami, who we think is a good team. They've lost Texas A&M. at texas and or no At Notre Dame, sorry.
Zack: um
Zack: Yeah, I don't know. i'm not I don't know if it's fair to call them frauds just yet, but I mean, they literally have not won a game yet. So are they good? I don't know. Are they even decent? Haven't shown it yet.
Zack: So fraud of the week. Shout out Notre Dame.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They are frauds.
Zack: Clip it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: they're still going But they're going to make the playoffs. They're going to go ten and two and make the playoffs.
Zack: I have a bet.
Mason: Mmm.
Zack: ah The last three years of taking the bet of Notre Dame will not make the college football playoff. I took it again last year. So I need them to miss it.
Zack: I need there to be a bunch of ten and two teams and their resume is just not going to look very good compared to SEC resumes.
Zack: Maybe it'll finally push them over the edge.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: like it.
Zack: Join a conference.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Never. They'll never do it.
Zack: Probably not.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: All right. Well, my fraud of the week is one Mr.
Zack: fraud of the week tense
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Alan Eck. Now you might be wondering who the heck is Alan Eck.
Zack: hmm oh no hmm
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Well, he's the head referee of the Jacksonville Jaguars versus Cincinnati Bengals football game today. This man is a fraud, he is a coward, and he is a terrible ref.
Zack: are na
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Not only did he call back two strip sacks and say they were forward passes, which go look on Twitter. All the Twitter referee film breakdown guys will tell you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They were not forward passes. Those were clean strip sacks. Should have got us the ball back twice.
Zack: You want to know the truth? Check Twitter.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Check Twitter.
Mason: Bye.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: There's some real people saying it.
Zack: They have the truth over there. Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: There's some real people. There's some people saying it that you should believe saying these are bad calls.
Zack: yeah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Alan Eck. Remember the name. If he's reffing one of your team's games, just know you're going to have a bad day. but Also, they call one of the most egregious fourth down and long pass interference plays.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: If you're going to call that on Travis Hunter, I'm sure everyone's probably seen it by now. It's going to get talked about. You'd have to call that on just about every play. like That is a just as clean as it gets in the NFL. He gets his head around. He breaks up the pass, and we call pass interference.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Handing the Bengals the game. So, Allen Eck. of Cummings, Georgia, born March 8th, 1969.
Zack: Are you doxing him right now?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's been an NFL official since 2016. Before that, was part of the Big 12 and Mountain Conference.
Mason: It's pretty long time.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, but he wasn't promoted to be a head official until 2023.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: This is only his third game as a head official
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: so way to Way to go, buddy. And before that, he worked he worked as an indirect tax manager for an Atlanta, Georgia-based construction and civil engineering company.
Mason: I love that game.
Mason: What did he do before that? Where did go to college?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Money laundering. That's what I think he did.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: who Who has their own tax guy for a construction company?
Mason: yeah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You only do taxes once a year.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: His uniform number is 76 with a lame number.
Mason: It's not official, everybody.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He played quarterback. Oh, he was so great. He played quarterback for the Bloomsburg University Huskies, where he holds the school record for most passes completed in a season with 194. completed passes in a whole season.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: you suck
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: so
Mason: What is happening right now?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: alanette
Zack: Got
Mason: Did you give out his address yet?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You are the fraud of the week. No, that'd be doxing I'd go to jail.
Mason: his phone number on there?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um
Mason: You give out everything else.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: that's all That's on his Wikipedia. that's That's just me sharing his Wikipedia page.
Mason: Oh, man.
Zack: That's tough right there. You know, I think i think Jags fans and and Tennessee Vols fans are actually, like, adjacent.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Dangerous online?
Zack: like they're not They're not that different.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yes.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They're not. There's a lot of comparisons. we ah we here's Here's the thing that gets said about Jax fans lot. I think Vols fans, I mean, outside of the 98th National Championship, we love something that has has never given us any reason to like have joy or happiness about them.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And so... like But we love them no matter what. like we I have a burning rage for this team. And so when I get scored by a ref who called back two defensive touchdowns today on strip sacks and a bogus pass interference call when their offensive linemen are holding almost every play on this fourth quarter comeback play. um Yeah, I'm going get a little hot. I'm going to little heated, and I'm going to call Alan Eck the fraud of the week, and it's going up on TikTok. Clip it. Clip it, Clipper.
Zack: do you want Do you want to speak out on Brian Thomas Jr. at all? or
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um Yeah, Brian Thomas getting a lot of heat online. I still believe in Brian Thomas, but he has been playing pretty soft these last two weeks. There's been couple times where he is literally like ducking as he's trying to catch the ball to avoid hits. I don't know what's going on It seems like he wants he's been making a lot of business decisions. They even called it on the the game today, pass over the middle.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Trevor throws a pick because Brian stops.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And the safety is just standing there with ah the easiest interception ever. And that goes on the stats as a Trevor interception, but it's really like brat he made a the business decision.
Zack: yeah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He didn't want to get tackled, ah hit over the middle. So Leon Cohen addressed it in his press conference after the game. And we'll see what happens.
Mason: i don't want to bring this into a ginormous outbreak or rant or anything but if this was calvin ridley he would be all up in our faces zach just talking about how many passes he dropped but then when he does it it's just like oh he's making a business decision you know everything's fine uh
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm still a big Brian Thomas guy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's bad. It's soft. He's been playing soft. I'm i'm saying it. he's He's been soft the last two the first two games of the year. He's been playing very soft.
Mason: There's video evidence of Leon Cohen going, hey, hit him in the chest, and he waves him off with disrespect. If cam war Cameron Ward would have done that, he would have got scolded for it.
Zack: yeah Thank you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, and guess what? No, and guess what?
Mason: It would have been the end of the world.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Trevor hits... Trevor hits Brian Thomas in the chest the very next pass, and what does he do? He drops it. So what do you want him to do? Trevor throws a dime to De'Ami Brown in the corner for a touchdown.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He drops it. He throws a pass a little bit too high, and then Liam said in his press conference, he said, I was fired up because we had just dropped a touchdown. um We're trying to win the game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And he said, I'm fine with Trevor doing that. Me and Baker got into it a lot last year. That's just two competitors getting after it. So they're fine.
Mason: Well,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Mason mason wants to bring up one little clip. the that there's friction between my quarterback.
Mason: because you would have been dissecting it like crazy. You would have been dissecting it like crazy. Cameron Ward did that, and you know it. And you you know it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, but but but your coach is at the door. Your coach has got about four more weeks left before he gets fired.
Mason: That's fine. That's fine. I'm okay with that. But listen here. Maybe Brian Thomas Jr. needs to be playing laser tag because right now I think Calvin Ridley has better stats than Brian Thomas Jr.
Zack: Oh my gosh.
Mason: does this season.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Oh, my gosh. Are you sure about that?
Zack: Listen, Mason, the Titans are owing to our I don't know you have very much of a leg to stand on here.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They haven't covered a spread yet. don't you worry about covering a spread?
Zack: ah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: why don't you worry about kicking a field goal when you're down 30 points?
Zack: Okay, we're not... Alright, I think that's all for our show today, everybody.
Zack: i need to break these two. I'm just going to get ugly pretty fast. um Anybody else have anything they have strong feelings about?
Mason: I got strong feelings.
Zack: There's a lot of strong feelings on this podcast. So I haven't saw your teams lose in the same week.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's true.
Zack: um So we will...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: least I wanted my fantasy.
Zack: Shout out how fantasy wins.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: have that. That's all I have.
Zack: Sometimes at the end of the weekend, it's it's all you can cling to. Yeah. um We will be back with our best of the rest series coming up on Thursday.
Zack: We have some other, we will be back with all of our weekend preview stuff. We got some big games coming up. Some, another exciting weekend football. So we are excited about it. We hope you join us here on Thursday and we will see then.
