Speaker: Things you don't want to be early for. a party hosted by someone you barely know. Things you do want to be early for. A first date. Your job. A meme coin before it goes to the moon.

Speaker: And Oscar predictions so you can gloat when you're right. Welcome back to Lost in the Frame. I'm your host Malik. I'm your host Tachi. And I'm your host Alex. And today, a quick discussion on Tony, followed by our way too early Oscar predictions. We are recording this Wednesday, August 26th. So that is seven months.

Speaker: Before the Oscars, if I'm not mistaken. um We did this last year. i don't think we did too good of a job of keeping up with how we did with our predictions. We did really bad. Remember, we covered it in the episode.

Speaker: We did. There was a lot of, ah I was having PTSD for a certain filmmaker where i was like, ooh, I should put this in. But I remembered we got burned by this particular person last year, but we'll get into it. Luca? Luca, yes. Does Luca have a movie coming out this year? He has Artificial coming out with Andrew Garfield. It's the open AI movie.

Speaker: Oh, no. Yeah. Oh, we were cooked. I had it in a spot, but I deleted it, but we will get into it. How are you guys today? You're right. Good. I'm good. Yeah, I'm feeling all right.

Speaker: All right. Let's see if we have our rapid reviews, and we'll get into Tony, and then we'll do our early predictions. Alex, what have you been watching? ah Not much. Not much. only have one rapid reviewable movie before we do this episode. Yeah.

Speaker: ah That was dodgeball. I watched the last 80% of that movie hungover one morning on a bachelor trip. It was just on when I walked in the room. ah The tournament hadn't started yet.

Speaker: ah The girl hadn't joined the team yet. And i I sat down on the couch with Liquid IV and watched the rest of the movie. ah Still pretty funny.

Speaker: It's pretty stupid. Six out of ten. Nice. Very good. I've never had i've never had a liquid IV. Me neither. They're pretty good. They're pretty good. They actually do work.

Speaker: Especially if you don't like the night before and then the then the morning after. Yeah. I just got a visual of you like in a hotel room with like an actual IV hooked up. Dude, that'd be aura. That would aura. Watching Touchball.

Speaker: No, I needed them. It was 110 degrees every day in Scottsdale while we were there. o We played golf. We played golf. Our tee time was 7 in the morning.

Speaker: um It was like 90 degrees to start off that that day. we finished like 11.30, 11.45. And I didn't realize how hot and uncomfortable I was until we dropped off the golf cart at the clubhouse.

Speaker: And we're standing outside, and I'm just like, if I do not coincide right now, I will pass out in the next three minutes. I was cooked. I was so tired. i was so achy.

Speaker: um I had sweat so much that it was like, I was dry. Like, it all just evaporated off. And I was like, ooh, this is dangerous. We spent a lot of that trip inside.

Speaker: i bet. don't blame you. No. 110 every single day. It's crazy. People just live out there. Shout out to any Arizona listeners if you're there. thumb Hope you're hydrated.

Speaker: um My Rapid Review... was my first AMC screen unseen. And for those that are unfamiliar, AMC every Monday plays a mystery movie for a movie that is coming out soon. So you don't really know what you're getting into.

Speaker: There are Reddit threads with like theories and people looking at runtimes and figuring out what movies are going to be. And sometimes they're right. Sometimes they're wrong. That's kind of the whole fun of the thing. I had a feeling it was going to be... So this is Scream Unseen.

Speaker: They just replace Screen with Scream whenever it's a horror movie. I had a feeling, and looking at other Reddit threads, that was going to be the new movie Buddy, which is directed by Casper Kelly, um if the name is not familiar.

Speaker: You may be familiar with his viral YouTube video, Too Many Cooks, from years and years ago on Adult Swim. Yeah, yeah, that's definitely a classic, but he has ah a new horror movie out called Buddy, and that was The Scream Unseen, and it was very much a fun time.

Speaker: Did you scream? I did scream. Did you moan? I did not moan. Um, it's a horror comedy, very heavy on the comedy. It is very funny and not really scary whatsoever.

Speaker: There's just a lot of horror elements to it, but it comes out, I think the 28th. So by the time this episode comes out, should be out. So if you haven't seen it, I would definitely recommend to go watch it. I gave it a three and a half out of five.

Speaker: Wow. It's pretty good. Yeah. Um, I don't really have a movie for my rapid review. um so I'll talk about a show that I've been keeping up with.

Speaker: It's a reality show. It's Dancing with the Stars, the next pro. fun I'm not going to lie. I love I really like competition shows. And um this one's like, it's got me in a chokehold.

Speaker: Great television. I remember you talking about it briefly. is this them trying to find new professional dancers to be on Dancing with the Stars? Right, to be to be a new pro to to teach whoever they get as a celebrity.

Speaker: Is it wholesome or is there drama? Kind of both. What kind of drama though? Like good drama? Are they fighting? Are they fighting on the dance floor? They're kissing.

Speaker: Ooh, even better. ah I wouldn't say they're fighting. There's drama. It's just like stronger opinions versus people who just kind of want to do what they think is best. But I don't know. it's It's good.

Speaker: It's mostly wholesome. Speaking of TV shows, um I've been watching Silo. I don't know if you guys ever watched it. It's on like season three. um Did you say it's really bad?

Speaker: Yeah, i have a lot of qualms with this show. it's So, eight episode seasons, which I'm sure we're all sick and tired of, but... They did this thing in season two where they kind of backtracked off of the finale of season one and spent the first four episodes slowly building to something. And then it started getting good at like episode five, six, and then it was over.

Speaker: They did the same exact thing this season. Last episode was so good. And it's episode six. so There are two more episodes, but the rest of the season has just been ass. I've heard. And I hate it. I, I'm, I'm addicted to the show, but I hate that they do that.

Speaker: You stop watching. I can't. I can't.

Speaker: But I will keep watching movies. Directed by Matt Johnson. Let's talk about Tony. um Tachi has our five star for a letterbox of light clothes. I have a three and then Alex has the one.

Speaker: No movie news?

Speaker: I had didn't put any down. I got a bit of news. New social reckoning trailer. It's better than the first. True. It is better than the first. I'm still scared though. And people, i think everybody else can now understand what Mikey Madison is saying.

Speaker: I could understand what she was saying this whole time because I can listen. So can I, but she was like, it was like incoherent. It was. I'm going to say Facebook.

Speaker: Verbatim. Where's my Oscar? That's how it was written. Yeah.

Speaker: All right. I've got our five star. um Got two. Okay. First one comes in from Saji. Five stars and a like. This is like live action Ratatouille if Remy smoked cigarettes and did heroin.

Speaker: The second five star comes in from Matty with three exclamation points. Virgin Oyster Shucker versus the Chad Pizza Guy. m It makes sense. That does make sense.

Speaker: a Three star today comes from Katie Rich. Weirdly frustrating for movie this well acted and well shot, and especially one with the beefed up Leo Waddell just dominating every scene he's in. I think there's an immaculate kitchen hang up movie in here somewhere, but the script feels compared compelled to throw in a lot of unconvincing and entirely made up plot that covers it up.

Speaker: We'll make you on a lobster roll real bad. Our one star comes from Highway to Haley. That is...

Speaker: What a great name. Highway to Haley. um Big ACDC fan. I've read better fan fiction about people that are alive on wattpad.com.

Speaker: Within five minutes, I deep sighed and wanted to walk out disrespectful to Anthony Bourdain's life and memory and what he was about. A true LARP of a film and terrible, regardless of the terrible script.

Speaker: F you, Matt Johnson. No stars. Highway to Haley? Jeez. Wow. That word LARP has been thrown around a lot. I feel like that's the the late 2026 word of the year. um Real quick synopsis for Tony. For those unfamiliar, this is a a biopic on Anthony Bourdain. ah Very loosely a biopic, but...

Speaker: Synopsis reads, a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life. And this is, of course, directed by Matt Johnson. If that name is familiar, earlier this year, he directed Nirvana, the band, the show, of the movie.

Speaker: So it's two for this year. What do we think Tony? He directed Blackberry. And Blackberry. I love Blackberry. um I'm a fan of Matt Johnson, but what guys think of Tony?

Speaker: Good. i feel like I know Anthony Bourdain little bit better. No, you don't, because that movie is almost entirely fan fiction. I feel like I know a little bit of an idea of who he might be.

Speaker: or might have i agree. i agree I think that's maybe the most important. I was really curious to see what Alex thought of it, because I know you have a relationship, Alex, with Anthony Bourdain.

Speaker: um I personally do not. Tachi, I don't know your relationship with Anthony Bourdain, if any. I'd heard of him growing up. I watched a lot of Food Network, just never him. I think it was too edgy for me.

Speaker: yeah actually He actually kind of scared me. He's a little scary. um I mean, the the one episode Malik watched with me when he was crashing at my place, ah we watched animals get castrated yeah in Argentina. And Malik said, I can't believe they show this on TV. And I said, yep. And we kept watching it.

Speaker: And then we drug your cats. yeah

Speaker: Well, 100% a true story. That is pretty much how that morning went. ah um I do a relationship with Anthony Bourdain. I think Anthony Bourdain is one of the more interesting people that we have been given in terms of a media personality, i'd say ever, right?

Speaker: um yeah He came onto the scene, obviously as a chef, first of all. He he was a very accomplished, distinguished chef. But Kitchen Confidential was his like breakthrough into you the the mainstream public consciousness.

Speaker: And from there, he parlayed that into a career of writing and television with ah Parts Unknown and um Parts Unknown and the the other one.

Speaker: yeah No reservations. That's embarrassing. I was like, I can't help you here. There's like really no difference between parts unknown and no reservations. I don't know why they're separate shows.

Speaker: I think parts unknown is like a little bit more travel focused, but it's Bortains. They still talk about food, but he is, he was of such a talented writer. Um,

Speaker: A little Hunter S. Thompson to him, I think. ah Very Gonzo-y style of writing in terms of just how he uses his voice. ah you If you watch enough of his shows and then you read Kitchen Confidential, which is how you know I went about it, ah you can pretty much hear him narrating this thing in your head. It's pure stream of consciousness, and it's it's a really fun read, especially if you're at all interested in food.

Speaker: um To hark back to the Scottsdale trip I went on this past weekend, ah we went to this restaurant called Ocean 44. You could see into the kitchen. There was like a big glass window into it. um And...

Speaker: you know If you've been there, you you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. You can see everything, all the stovetops, the ovens, the you know the dessert station, the seafood counter. um And watching them go to work with the context of this book, I thought was very interesting. It made me think about my restaurant experience a little bit deeper.

Speaker: And then I devoured all my food and it was delicious. And you guys should totally go if you're ever in the area. That being said, this but this movie is basically based off two chapters within um within Kitchen Confidential. And they're chapters discussing his ah his coming of age in the kitchen in Provincetown.

Speaker: um And so I was really interested to see how Matt Johnson took those two chapters and parlayed that into a feature length movie.

Speaker: And i was a little disappointed in how much of it was made up for... the camera And I was surprised at how cliche the script felt considering the source material.

Speaker: ah I think Malik, it was yours, your rapid review that said there is a great hangout movie in there somewhere. um And I walked out of the theater thinking, wow, they should just done dazed and confused in a kitchen.

Speaker: Because a lot of the differences come from his relationship to why he's even in Provincetown in the first place. Um, I'm not going to pretend, I mean, the the movie opens with a quote from him, right? About how he pretty much deserved to get beaten up because he was an absolute out.

Speaker: Uh, And he is like that in the book, except he goes there with friends. um And he's not like lying the whole time. And he kind of enthusiastically goes into the kitchen thing. he was staying at this cottage, right?

Speaker: And a friend who worked at this restaurant was like, hey, um our dishwasher got fired. And he was like, okay, I'll do it, right? And in the movie, it's like this...

Speaker: it's kind of like pay you back kind of situation, where he's like, Oh, don't want to do this. Like, this is miserable. Um, And i just don't think you needed any of that. I don't think you needed to drastically change the story he told about his time in Provincetown to to make a compelling narrative.

Speaker: I thought the romance plot was a little silly, um especially considering the real Nancy, who he does marry. They had been dating on and off since high school and had planned to go to Provincetown like together. It was just like a whole whole bit.

Speaker: Um, and so I was just, I was a little disappointed to see it be kind of like an Anthony Bourdain fan fiction. Um, I hark a lot on the, you know like personal mythos aspect of some of these like hangout movies.

Speaker: And I didn't feel like this was kind of like that because it didn't really feel like a mythology. It kind of felt like Kind of sucky in terms of what the the Provincetown summer was like. I was expecting this grand, like, debauchery, chicanery nonsense, and we just kind of got a very muted movie. I was very surprised.

Speaker: Hmm. i do I did like it. um I thought Dominic Sessa did a really good job with capturing that Bourdain spirit, especially in how he talked.

Speaker: um His accent doesn't... He sounds like Dominic Sessa. He doesn't really sound like Anthony Bourdain. But there were a couple moments where he said like a certain line or like retorted against someone, and he was like, ah, yeah I could totally see Bourdain hitting someone went like that.

Speaker: um And so i was really happy to see my boy Dom go go two for two. I think not as good as Holdovers. not as good as holdovers but hold He's got two other movies that we skipped. He's got that Christmas movie. and I do not care. And then the the Now You See Me movie, I believe he's in. I'm picking and He's two for two in my mind too But i've I've talked a lot and so I'll pass it back to you guys. ah What do you think about anything I said?

Speaker: So... This is why, yeah, I was excited to to have this conversation for this movie because I know you're big on Anthony Bourdain. And the conversation, I think, on a like wider aspect is basically exactly this.

Speaker: Those that like love Anthony Bourdain and saw this movie and were like, that's not accurate, therefore I don't really like it that much. Or someone who does love Anthony Bourdain and knows this isn't accurate, but...

Speaker: Still really enjoys the movie. um I'm definitely more in the middle. Like I said in the beginning, like I don't really know Anthony Bourdain and don't really have a relationship. But I was really interested to see how Matt Johnson was going to go about directing a biopic like this. Because it seemed like before the movie was coming out that it was...

Speaker: Just taking, like you said, just those couple chapters from Kitchen Confidential and expanding on that. um The quote that is shown at the beginning of the movie was, I was, to be frank, a spoiled, miserable, narcissistic, self-destructive, and thoughtless young lout and badly in need of a good ass kicking.

Speaker: I think that's the entire movie. I don't even think it's two chapters. I think it's literally just that quote and Matt Johnson kind of ran with it. um This feels... From what I can see of Anthony Bourdain, this feels spiritually correct, which I think is a really interesting way to make a biopic.

Speaker: I think you can make something like this really boring. I think there's a lot of boring choices you can make, but I think the way Matt Johnson approaches it is really it's really interesting to me.

Speaker: And watching interviews with Matt Johnson, he said... ah I'm going butcher how he said it, but basically saying like, he's aware that this movie is not factual. And he's like, it's not about that. Like, it's literally just like about the spirit. He says he operates from a filmmaking perspective, somewhere in between the mythos, is kind of like what you're saying, Alex, and like a dream state. And he's kind of meets these types of projects somewhere in the middle.

Speaker: And I can fully feel that with this. um So I was a big fan of this movie, though. can be a bit like stereotypical of the coming of age. I feel like if you do it right, it works for me.

Speaker: And I do feel like this movie did a lot right. Dominic Sessa puts on a great performance, I think partnered with Antonio Banderas with one of my favorite performances. Ooh, you hit that. Thank you. Yeah.

Speaker: I agree with you for the romance aspect, which we can get into a little bit more. i think that part department was a little bit lacking, but there is a really good kitchen hangout movie. And those are some of my favorite sequences.

Speaker: um I'll throw it to you, Tachi. Sure. I'll say this first. I really did like this movie and I, I do like Matt Johnson's approach to biopics because when I watch something like this and think about my experience and my feelings with, um, a great unknown, is that what it's called? The Bob Dylan one. I'll complete them.

Speaker: Complete unknown. Um, and then there's like another, uh, the Elvis one with Austin Bowyer.

Speaker: i I think I just don't like recap movies say. I think we all need them. Yeah. When the approach is about like kind of what the person is or what they represent, it seems a lot more interesting to me.

Speaker: um Getting into their slice of life as opposed to just here's what they did at this point. This is what happened. Let's move on to the next thing. So I find that a lot more interesting and I'm glad that they went this route.

Speaker: um It's a very intimate movie. um I feel like 90% of the shots, the the subject in the frame is like a foot away. like Yeah.

Speaker: So many close-ups. I don't know how I feel about it, but it was just something I noticed. um I guess it was nice. i really enjoyed how this movie was shot. Yeah, it was shot beautifully. Maybe you want to go back home.

Speaker: Yeah, the cinematographer is Michael Bauman, who um is a cinematographer for Licorice Pizza and One Battle After Another. Oh, wow. Nice. So very different movies, but yeah, I love the way it was shot.

Speaker: Maybe he joined the Chef movie because he's shown that he can cook. love it. That's exactly what happened. um However.

Speaker: oh yeah, go ahead. I do have concerns. So I do like Dominic Sessa in this movie. I love him in the holdovers, but these two characters are very similar.

Speaker: And in the back of my mind, I have a fear that maybe the smart snarky punk might be the only kind of character he can play.

Speaker: I don't think that's true, but now I'm starting to think that that's a possibility. That he could be typecast again yeah in the future. So i would I would like to see some a variety in his next couple roles.

Speaker: I would too. Cam said the same thing coming out of the movie. She's like, I feel like that was very similar to his role in The Holdovers. And you can you can feel that immediately. i don't know if that's really like a like, I don't know if that knocks the performance down for me.

Speaker: necessarily it feels a bit more it feels a bit deeper i guess and i feel like that can just tie into maybe dominic sessa's own mythos like as a person and as an actor because it's like holdovers was his first role and yeah i mean yeah like kind of plucked out of nowhere right right from like a high school drama class. Yeah.

Speaker: And it just like completely changed his life. I think that's very similar to what we see in Tony and how we see Anthony Bourdain. Like he initially wants to be a writer and it's kind of just lying his way into the summer he's having And has this transformative summer that showed him this love and appreciation for for cooking and being in the kitchen.

Speaker: So it's like he was able to like start this new this new chapter and this new life. And I feel like that's just very similar to Dominic Sessa. So it's like, I think role like this makes sense for Dominic Sessa because of the holdovers.

Speaker: But I do hope that he's not typecast from this. Like if his third movie is a similar role, I'm going to be like, Yeah. We got to do something else now. His third movie is an Obama biopic where he plays Obama the same way. but These two.

Speaker: I believed you for the first few seconds there. Until I said Obama. um One part I did want to bring up from an interview that I was watching with Matt Johnson um talking about Kitchen Confidential and like Kind of the reason for wanting to just capture the spirit of Anthony Bourdain rather than be like factually correct.

Speaker: The scene of the, of Tony picking up the cast iron skillet with his hand and burning his hand and someone else kind of comes up, just picks it up and looks at him like with a lug and he's like, what are you crying about bitch? And he's got like all the blisters on his hand.

Speaker: That's in the book. yeah And Matt Johnson spent the summer in province and Provincetown. Provincetown. I forget who he's talking to, but he's talking to people that were close with Anthony Bourdain and that were like there during the summer, like this guy who was, who was also a dishwasher at a separate restaurant, um, who is now the owner. And he's like in his seventies, eighties. And he's now the owner.

Speaker: Um, basically they like confirmed like that story never happened. Like he he talked to the to the brother that was the one to pick up the cast iron skillet. And he's like, that never happened, but he would always tell that story.

Speaker: And so I think in that, there's like this this inflection that Bourdain himself would do. And thinking about maybe memories he had from back then. And he's like, like he of course that happened. like those These are his memories. So like of course it happened, but like did it really happen?

Speaker: So I don't think it really matters. It just feels like more of a feeling rather than than factual. Yeah. Right. yeah i just thought that I just thought that was really interesting. One of the other bits in the book that did happen, by the way, like that was plucked from the book, is the dude banging the bride.

Speaker: That happened? That happened. That was real. That's nuts. That came from the book. Wow. ah Pretty much beat for beat, where she went out the back, and Tony said he looked...

Speaker: Like, from like one way, I saw the affair and then looked over here and saw the groom at the table, and he was like... Could you imagine? That's that's insane. crazy ah Let's talk about Leo Waddell.

Speaker: Yeah. Absolutely killer in this movie. yeah Very good. Steals everything. Yeah. it like If the movie just became about him, i would have been okay with it.

Speaker: He's absolutely like fantastic in this movie. I want to know more about his character. I do too. Why is he like that? Why are any of us like that?

Speaker: ah drugs I've only seen him in the white Lotus. I haven't seen Nuremberg and I haven't seen tuner. That is, think those are two that came out this Did Nuremberg come out this year last year?

Speaker: and think year. Nuremberg was last year. Okay, yeah, but Tuner, I definitely want to see. um I heard a rumor. I don't know if this is rumor. it might have just been fan cast. We were talking about X-Men fan casts. I heard Leo Waddell's name be thrown out there.

Speaker: For Beast? Wolverine, sorry. Oh. For Wolverine. Hmm. He looks a little tall for Wolverine, but apparently it doesn't really matter. Yeah, no one really cares.

Speaker: um Anything else you guys want to say about his performance?

Speaker: No, he was great. Yeah. Not the soundtrack. We did have a a friend of the pod give a fan cast to make up for Kaylee Spaney. Kaylee Spaney not getting rogue.

Speaker: Kaylee Spaney as Wolverine. She's That'll work. She's height, lower accurate. Yep. I'm in. It's the multiverse. too. Anything can happen.

Speaker: i What are some favorite scenes from this movie for you guys? Hmm.

Speaker: there's something that made me laugh out loud and I forget what it was. One of his quips where he just like says something back and you're like, yeah, absolute singer.

Speaker: god This wasn't one of my favorite scenes, but it is memorable. And it's the aftermath of him trying to show Nancy on the stairs, his oyster shucking.

Speaker: And it's just like everything's kind of splayed out on the banister. The oysters looking all just goopy. So disgusting. That's stuck. do you guys like oysters?

Speaker: Yeah, I don't mind them. And I love a good oyster. We had oysters the night before watching this movie. And I was like, I'm so glad we did. Or else we'd have to go get more oysters right now.

Speaker: I was craving ram them watching the movie. I was like, ooh, the salty brine. Yeah. And the lobster rolls. Yeah. I love a lobster roll. This movie, if if its only mission was to like make me want a summer like that,

Speaker: I think it succeeded. Big seafood. Yeah. They're out to get me. Big seafood propaganda. Buddy, go to the Northeast. You should you should come visit where I grew up.

Speaker: I would love to. it looks like that's what it like It's just what it looks like. I would love to do that. um My favorite scene was ah Antonio Banderas and Dominic Sessa in the kitchen together as they're refilling like the ketchup bottles and the salt shakers and everything.

Speaker: It's like a two to three minute scene and it's there's no score and it's just quiet and it's just like just like a voyeuristic shot of just watching them do this thing and you can see, I don't know, that just felt like the entire soul of the movie to me.

Speaker: And I absolutely loved it. It was so it was just beautifully shot and very intimate. um Yeah. see That was mine.

Speaker: that one That one stuck out to me as well. I think that might be my favorite scene. Yeah. ah For the music, the composer, Jay McCarroll, Jay from Nirvana, the band, the show, of the movie.

Speaker: I laughed out loud when I saw that. I did too. i was like, no way. I don't know why. I just laughed first out laughing when I saw Jay McCarroll. Yeah, this has a really good score. It's very simple. like It's a lot of piano.

Speaker: um a lot of piano and a lot of good needle drops, but I think the music from the score to the soundtrack I think is really, really good in this movie. Agreed. And Antonio Banderas was great.

Speaker: He was really good. Really enjoyed his performance. Probably. ooh i don't know. Leo was really good, too. I think it would be hard for me to decide who I like more.

Speaker: That's a that's a tough decision, I think. Yeah, between Dominic Sessa, Antonio Banderas and Leo Waddell, just three really good performances. I really like Amelia Jones, but I also agree with you, Alex. I think that aspect of the story might have been a little bit lacking and i was surprised to learn after the fact that that ended up becoming his wife in real life.

Speaker: Well, they had been dating before that. Yeah. i was like, oh, okay. Well, cool that's not how that happened. Like at all. Yeah. Yeah. Um, we won't spend too much time on Tony. Is there anything else you guys want to shout out before we get to our early Oscar predictions?

Speaker: Oh, actually I'll say one one more thing. Um, I've never seen a shotgun used in that manner before. So once you see the movie, you'll understand. Okay.

Speaker: That's what we got to do next summer. but but He brought a gun. um i give this a four out of five. I'm torn. um

Speaker: You know what? I'll give this a four as well just because this feels like the most rewatchable biopic that I've seen. Outside of Michael, I guess. I'm going to give this a three and a half out of five.

Speaker: Okay. Nothing can go over a four, man. Nothing's going over a three and a half. We have like like have like four above fours this year or something.

Speaker: That's it? Yeah, actually, I think it might be. Wow. Let me look. I mean, we've only been we've been saying it the entire year, but how backloaded this year is?

Speaker: Sorry, I lied. Five. Five above fours.

Speaker: Wow. Well, I'm sure more will come. Let's get into our early Oscar predictions. don't know, man. Starting to lose lose the faith. You gotta believe.

Speaker: Avengers Doomsday is going to blow your mind. Dude, it's... Yelp. It's gonna doom any preconceived notions you may have. Exactly. Alright, so today we're going to cover...

Speaker: Six categories. We're going to do writing for original and adapted, actor in a leading role, actress in a leading role, directing, and best picture. As a pod, we will each come with our own individual picks of what we think could be nominated in this category and decide together our predictions. Set in stone, no changes, no takesies, backsies.

Speaker: We'll get to the other categories later on in the year once we actually see them. I think visual effects and supporting roles are a bit more difficult. In August, this is all difficult. This is all just huge conspiracy. Did we do nominee last time? I think we did. Five nominees. think we did. yeah so we're just going to shrink it down a little bit and boom really and really carve it into stone. They're washed. They're chopped. They're on- Okay, let's start with writing in original. We're going to do the normal five picks in each category, what we think will be there, and then we'll do 10 for best picture.

Speaker: wants to go with their first pick? what do What do you guys have for original screenplay? um Can we do ties? Because there are three categories I'm really torn on.

Speaker: Sure, yeah, we'll just we're going to talk through it. Sure. Okay. I've got mine for original writing. Okay. The invite. That's original, right?

Speaker: Adapted. Oh, my God. Yes. What about primetime? think that's technically adapted. I'm going to...

Speaker: yeah At least you got some for adapted.

Speaker: All right, someone else go, please. Okay. um For original, the first one I have is The Debut by Jesse Eisenberg. reason ah Reason I put this one is um What was his last movie?

Speaker: A Real Pain?

Speaker: With himself and Kieran Culkin? think so. I'm... I'm forgetting the name of the movie, but the one with their brothers, that was that was that got a lot of love at the Oscars. and It did. the day The debut is coming out this year, written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, starring Paul Giamatti and Julianne Moore.

Speaker: i don't know if you guys have seen a trailer. This looks very much like my shit, and I'm very excited for it. I could see this getting nominated for original.

Speaker: Alex, what do you have?

Speaker: For writing original? Yeah. we Actually, we should just say all the picks that we have in each category. What if I just made one pick for each category?

Speaker: If you just made one, I've got four. I've got five. I've got four for the writing ones. What is the one that you have? Wild Horse 9. Okay. okay

Speaker: is this Which I think someone made an AI book out of. I'm pretty sure. Really? Which is crazy. Yeah. Then it goes to Adapted.

Speaker: Shut up. Who's that one written by? Martin McDonough. Okay, so he wrote and directed. He wrote and directed it, yeah. Okay, I like that one. um The other ones I have are Behemoth, written by Tony Gilroy, Club Kid, Jordan Firstman, and Ink, James Graham.

Speaker: Ink is the one ah with our boy from Bone Temple coming out this year. And it's Danny Boyle. And it's Danny Boyle. But wouldn't Ink also be adapted because it's based on the life of Rupert Murdoch, who was a real guy?

Speaker: See, Adapted is so hard.

Speaker: I don't know. i don't know how that works. Are we still on Original? Yeah. right, I'm gonna go Digger. just gonna swing for the fences.

Speaker: Okay, there we go. I had to Google this one just to make sure, and I'm gonna go with it. Okay, I like it. We'll see. We can write these I'm scared. we'll put Digger, we'll put Wild Horse 9.

Speaker: What else did we say? What did you say? I said the debut. I don't know how you guys feel about that. The trailer looks promising.

Speaker: It does. We'll pick three. We can go to adapted. Okay. do you have more in adapted? Well, you I know you got like three in adapted, Tachi. I do. What you thought was original. What do you got?

Speaker: ah The Social Reckoning, The Invite, and Primetime. Okay. I have The Social Reckoning, The Invite, The Odyssey, and The Black Ball.

Speaker: Never heard of the last one.

Speaker: I'm not too familiar with it. I think it had its premiere at one of the film festivals earlier this year and it got a lot of good reception. think Netflix is distributing it. It's supposed to be really good though. I've heard really good things.

Speaker: Blackball. got the Social Reckoning, the Invite Alex. Do you have anything? Blackball. Or La Bola Negra. I mean, oh to me, it's going to be the Odyssey and Dune 3, and then everything else is just along for the ride.

Speaker: Got it. I mean, it's it's it's a Tyson versus Ali, and then like Conor McGregor standing there like, oh, I can fight too. yeah We've had a lot of a Scottish talk on this pod recently.

Speaker: Well, first of all, he's Irish. Oh. McGregor's Irish. He's absolute doofus. I'm not bultured. Second of all, I am going to Scotland in a month, and so I'm very excited. Actually, less than a month now. It's less than a month. damn. Now you're getting ready for that. Scotland!

Speaker: All right. What are y'all's picks for directing? this and This could go a lot of ways. I think there This could be a ton of ways. There are two shoe-ins for sure.

Speaker: Christopher Nolan and Denis for The Odyssey and Dune. Do we agree? Yes. Yes. Okay. Do you guys have anyone else?

Speaker: I think Martin McDonough. They love Martin McDonough. They do. I also have him on my list for Wild Horse 9.

Speaker: Is there a ah secret PTA movie i don't know about? No, there's not. I think he's doing a ah concert film for someone called Cameron Winter. I have no idea who that is.

Speaker: Oh, it's the guy in ah the band. Oh, what were they? They blew up recently. and They they sound like blew up? Are they okay? Yeah, they did. Cameron Winter, they all died. um what Geese. Geese.

Speaker: okay okay That's Cameron Winter. Got it. Yeah, he's doing like a like a tour concert film, something like that. So that's the next thing PTA has. I don't know if that will be nominated for for an Academy Award.

Speaker: And otherwise, my pick is Denis Villeneuve. Okay. mr den The other two I have. This one, I'm iffy on. You guys can fight back on it if you have someone else. But I also put Jesse Eisenberg for the debut, but I don't feel strongly with it.

Speaker: I think he could be on a short list, but I i don't think he'd actually be nominated. I'll give you that. For a yay or a nay? nay. Okay. I mean, I'll give you short list, but... Yeah.

Speaker: How do we feel about Danny Boyle? m um with I love Danny. I would love, love Danny Boyle to get nominated. i would too, and I thought about it.

Speaker: I don't know, but I would be fine putting it for our prediction. i think it'd be awesome. And then, are we going in on Digger this year? I mean, are we are we digging in...

Speaker: we can Okay, so I'm between two. Wait, so for the fourth, we're good with Danny Boyle for Yes. I like that. is Digger going to be our smashing machine or after the hunt? It could be. So I was between Digger and The Invite on directing. No. Because I can see a world where Olivia Wilde gets a directing nomination for this.

Speaker: I know you don't want it.

Speaker: I think I'll buy shovel. Digging my heels in. What would you bite for, Tachi? I said, I think I'll buy a shovel. For Digger? Let's go. all right. i I'm outbid.

Speaker: You should put a note on our graphic says Malik wanted the invite. the Malik supports women. We will come back to this episode when I'm inevitably right. I just... I don't know, dude. I...

Speaker: i I don't even get, like...

Speaker: So, I mean, i the movie wasn't for me, right? And I'm okay with that. I can accept that. It's the same thing with sentimental value. But watching that movie, I still was like, I just don't see it in terms of, like, okay, this is awards competitive for, like, directing and screenplay. And was like, I feel like it'd be a very weak nom.

Speaker: Wow, yeah. Again, i still disagree. I'm watching and I'm like, wow, they're fucking cooking here. me too. The kitchen's on fire. We'll see though. like Academy voters could feel the same way that you do.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I've been known to be really good at these predictions. I don't know if that's true. I won twice in a row. Better hit rate than me, that's for sure. I still have my my list from the Anora year where I hit like 18 of them, like 18 wins or something. Tachi, what was your hit rate last year?

Speaker: Abysmal.

Speaker: Like fewer, I don't know, maybe 10%.

Speaker: Well, I think actor in a leading role is one of the easier categories and maybe where we could be 100% aligned. i have two options.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Right now? Yeah. Okay. Timothy Chalamet for Dune and Robert Pattinson for Primetime. Yep. What about Matt Damon for The Odyssey? Yeah. Yep. Nah. Nah? Okay.

Speaker: I'll say he might get nominated, but I don't think he'll win. I don't think he'll win, but he is going to get nominated for sure. Yeah. Whatever. I think those are three like shoe-ins. What do we think? what do we think What do we think about Tom?

Speaker: Holland? think about Tom. Yeah. Tom Holland. Cruise. What?

Speaker: Holland's not getting shit. I'm sorry. he's not even attending. I don't even so get even think about Tom Cruise. I'm so sorry. that is ah That's days in Scientology camp for you, buddy. You're getting your Thetans read.

Speaker: By the way, um I had to go to a suit fitting, like a tux fitting yesterday. And as I'm walking to the store, we passed this building that in big bold letters above it, it says the way to happiness or the key to happiness is And like as you're passing by the windows, it's got what I can only describe as like 21 commandments of like steps on how to live a happier life.

Speaker: And it's like do not murder. Be there for others. And like as you're walking down, you're seeing these big posters of like these 21 commandments. And so after i was just like, okay, i need to Google this. The way to happiness. or The key to happiness.

Speaker: I look it up. It's by the guy who invented Scientology. It's like Scientology light. I think it's like a way. No, ah Hubbard. Yeah, L. Ron Hubbard. Yeah, L. Ron Hubbard. um Yeah, same creator. And I think it's just like a way to get into Scientology. I was like, that is actually crazy. That is just Scientology.

Speaker: That is how they get people in. That's the bit is your life sucks. And here's how you here's the secret to making it better. That's exactly what it seemed like. That is Scientology. All of the Xenu stuff and all that is, you got to be like level seven or eight to like unlock that or else they literally will tell you if you find out too early, you'll die.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. We talked about this, I think on our last episode. Mm-hmm. We got to stop because they're going to come for us. Forget this, dude. We're going and all in on Tom. All right. him down. All right. He's on guys. Scientology.

Speaker: All right. So we've got Matt Damon, the Odyssey, Tom Cruise, Digger, Robert Pattinson, Primetime, Timothy Chalamet, Dune 3. I put Sebastian Stan for Fjord.

Speaker: What about John Malkovich, Wild Horse 9? I've been liking what I've seen in that trailer. I really do, too. I am looking forward to that movie. What about Robert Downey Jr.?

Speaker: For what? ends day No. This is... i i actually feel really bad. This is... Where are the not-white people?

Speaker: We look racist. Yeah, it's... This is a bleak year. don't Do we think that Mahershala Ali movie has any motion? Mother, mother, mother, whatever it is.

Speaker: Is that the, ah he's not a zombie or a vampire. It's a vampire hunter. No, that's blade. Yeah. But I think someone else like made a blade movie where he is a vampire. lade Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: They're like, fuck it. We'll make our own blade. We got blade at home and it's better. What was this movie called? he said it was called like mother, mother, mother. No, I looked it up and that wasn't it.

Speaker: don't know the name. Your mother, your mother, your mother. Okay. Is he a vampire hunter?

Speaker: He's some kind of killer. This sounds sick. Okay, this sounds really sick. Following the death of his wife, a devoutly religious hitman embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, confronting the forces closing in around him and the beliefs threatening to unravel with it.

Speaker: That sounds sick. Yeah. I don't think the Academy would like that at all. I don't think so. i don't think so either. I think the Academy is scared of what Houston, Texas has to offer.

Speaker: like i just To me, it seems like the anti-academy is Houston. Houston has too much motion for the academy.

Speaker: I do think the this category will be very white.

Speaker: Unfortunately.

Speaker: like i can't i couldn't I couldn't find anything on the horizon for this year that that that would fit this category.

Speaker: Who else did you guys say? We've got four. John Malkovich. John Malkovich. And then you said Sebastian Stan. Mm-hmm. Stanny boy. And Tachi said Robert Downey Jr., but I hope he wasn't serious.

Speaker: I'm not. Okay. The first... Well, no, Black Panther was nominated. All right, Tachi, break the tie. Who do you want? Sebastian Stan or John Malkovich?

Speaker: I'll go Sebastian Stan. I don't know anything about Fjord. but I know I want to see the fjords in Norway, the actual ones. Yeah. That's, that's a high bucket list item for me.

Speaker: Is there anyone you'd want to replace Alex for John Malkovich that you think could be more of a shoe in between Matt Damon, Tom Cruise, Robert Pattinson? I feel, don't know. I'll let you, I'll let you go. I'd pull Matt Damon.

Speaker: Really? My own personal opinion. I'd pull Matt Damon.

Speaker: so we Over Bobby P. Over Tom Cruise. The CEO of cinema. The board isn't voting him out, people. You know what?

Speaker: I like that. John Malkovich.

Speaker: I don't think it'll happen. I think Matt Damon has to get in, but i think I'd rather see that. Wild Horseman does look like a really fun time. I think there's a strong chance that the Odyssey doesn't do as well as people think in terms of the Oscars.

Speaker: Agreed. I think that it just not like it's going to get like a bajillion awards i mean award nominations, but yeah I think there's a reality that isn't super implausible where it doesn't get a lot.

Speaker: I agree. it doesn't take home a lot of hardware.

Speaker: Especially in the acting and script department. I agree. I think if anything, it would be score, like original score. Visual effects, maybe.

Speaker: i think it it should sweep the technicals. like it I believe it should absolutely clean those up. Yeah. Kind of feels a little Inception-y. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: We're just no performances really broke through, but everything else. Yeah, pretty great it's the spectacle of it all that that is the one that kind of breaks through big moment in pop culture, too. So yeah, fully agree.

Speaker: um OK. Actress in a leading role. Indy. Indy. Indy.

Speaker: Give me another role where you think for the rest of the year that will generate as much hype as Indy Navarrete did with Obsession.

Speaker: I don't think anyone has come close to it in like the last three years, except for maybe Wicked. But that was because of Ari Stans. Yeah. This is like a once in a lifetime performance, I think.

Speaker: Right. Yeah. It's very unique. I don't see a world where she doesn't at least get nominated. Yeah. Do you think she would win? That would be nuts. Because I think a nomination is like for sure happening, but do you see a Year to she should win. Like everything that's come out so far, I think she's far and away the best actress.

Speaker: 100%. I would say Olivia Wilde is probably second. But I think Indy just blows it out of the water. Indy was way more captivating. And scary. Like, the her range in the movie is is all over the place, whereas i thought Olivia Wilde was just awkward millennial.

Speaker: ah Yeah, the movie doesn't work without this performance. No, it doesn't really at all. I really hope she's not a one-hit wonder. I hope it wasn't just like,

Speaker: Lightning in a bottle. Yeah.

Speaker: I think she's going to be good. Okay. I also put Julianne Moore for the debut. Renata Rainsville for Fjord. are going to hate this one. Emily Blunt, Disclosure Day. knew it. Shut up. And Sandra Hewler for Fatherland.

Speaker: You're literally making it up, dude. That's not even real. I'm not even going to... I'm not even going to grace that. Look, like look, and i and I know where the world stands on Disclosure Day. I do think the only nomination it will get is Emily Blunt.

Speaker: Yes. I think this is factually going to happen. That I can agree with. She is the sole, almost the sole good thing about that movie.

Speaker: I literally didn't put Steven Spielberg for directing. I didn't even put this movie in Best I will put $10. Towards anything you want, that disclosure day is going to get completely blanked. Where do I write this? 10 bucks bet.

Speaker: All right, i put 10 bucks bet from Alex that D-Day is snubbed. And we will come back to this. I think this movie will only get one nomination, and I think it's Emily Blunt.

Speaker: I sure hope so.

Speaker: I'm putting her down. Who else do you guys want here?

Speaker: Everything else is like, it was a little bit difficult because it's future looking. Yeah. Like I, I just don't know, to be honest, you know, it'd be really cool. Um, I, I don't know her name. I'm so sorry, but the actress from squid game, who's going to be in hope.

Speaker: That would be sick. who is in hope That would be sick. We should put her. Okay. Finder. Give me her name. Yeah. I'll do that right now. Okay. Although I think Hope isn't even getting South Korea's backing for best international feature, which is crazy.

Speaker: That's going to go to um Possible Love.

Speaker: Haven't heard of that one yet. Apparently. I'm so excited for Hope. I bought tickets already. Nice. That comes out soon, right? Yeah. What's the release date? The 6th. Ho Young. Ho Young.

Speaker: Jung Ho Young. She's in. We got three. um Similar to Sebastian Stan, Renata Reinsva from Backrooms. I think she will get nominated. ah She was nominated for Worst Person in the World, I believe, a few years ago.

Speaker: And she's on The Come Up. Fjord, I think, is going to do very well at the Oscars. I heard good things coming out of Con. It won the Palme d'Or, the highest award you can get at Con.

Speaker: So that's a shoe-in for Best Picture. It's a shoe-in for some acting nominations. So i would ah I would campaign for her. Yeah, that releases October 9th.

Speaker: Yeah, that's movie I'm also really excited for. Hey, apparently we have a new Chase Infinity movie this year. What's that one? The Julia set comes out during TIFF.

Speaker: Ooh. Yeah, all of these um festivals are happening soon, like in the next couple of weeks. ah Venice kicks off September 2nd, Telluride September 4th, and TIFF September 10th.

Speaker: so I'm ready

Speaker: for another Chase Infinity bandwagon. Yeah. I'm going to do it. I know you are. I don't think there was a question about it. I'd be surprised if you didn't.

Speaker: Yeah. All right. Best picture. Wait, what about best supporting actress? Oh, we didn't do supporting actor. Yeah, we're waiting for that Yeah, we are. We'll come back to that. We'll come back to that category and the others probably in the new year.

Speaker: Like right before the actual nominations so we could see the movies. Anne Hathaway. i hate ah She can be our first and only because I agree. I think Anne Hathaway for actress in a supporting role.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, Penelope Cruz in the black ball. Penelope Cruz. Or in the invite. No. yes Okay, so we've got two for supporting actress. Nice. Do you want to do two for actor?

Speaker: I got mine. you got You got one? John Leguizamo from The Odyssey and I think Antonio Maderas from Tony. Really?

Speaker: There is always one like who actually saw this movie type performance in there. And I think Tony could be one of them.

Speaker: Really? Tony could do it, yeah. Okay. I'm going to hit you with ah Sam Rockwell, Wild Horse 9. Okay. Supporting? Yeah.

Speaker: Okay, so we got three. Yeah, never mind. We did it. Oh, I'm going to give you a crazy supporting actress. Okay. You ready? Yes. Anya Taylor-Joy, Dune 3.

Speaker: Ooh. Ooh. That'd be nice. Her character. i was actually talking about this with my dad on the way home from work. I was on the phone with him. There's enough in that book where Anya Taylor-Joy could maybe be best actress screen time.

Speaker: I think that character does enough that if she gives a strong performance, she for sure should be in the conversation for best supporting actress. So I'm going to go Anya. I like it.

Speaker: That's a Paul Trady's sister? Yes. Yeah, and she's crazy. Like, crazy neat. um I'd love to see a trailer.

Speaker: Still haven't. Dude, I found the, you know, the war chant? yeah I found it written out. I did too. i forgot it. I forgot it too. need to find it again. Like three weeks ago, I was just looking at it on my phone and I had it and all day I just like...

Speaker: Whatever he says. Yeah, we got we got to learn that. That's going to be our opening for the next year. Okay. I'll be saying any football games. We got three in supporting actress and we also got three in supporting actor.

Speaker: Cool. God, we should just do it. We should just finish the category. should just finish it. Anne Hathaway. End of Oak Street. She gets twice. Is that Anne Hathaway, Devil Wears Prada. Oh, she's got three movies this year. Anything else?

Speaker: Does she have anything else this year? i don't think Does she have role in Dune? She's the worm. Yeah. Maybe we can find some more for Picture. wait. Is Rocky from Project Hail Mary, is he supporting actor?

Speaker: Yeah. I know they're going to campaign for it. I think they're campaigning for it. i don't know if they'll actually... i don't know if they would do it. The Oscars does seem to kind of be wanting to be a bit more with the times instead of so like stuffy, I think.

Speaker: I think of like Amy Madigan's nomination and win from weapons, which was awesome. So I feel like that kind of opens doors for not only like Indie Navarrete, but also other types of performances like Rocky, um, that the pop culture, that culture just like loves.

Speaker: You want to put him? Sure. Okay. you know his name? Rocky. rocky Rocky. I meant the actor. Yeah. It's Rocky, he's a rock.

Speaker: right, Rocky from PHM, I'll get his name later. All right, we'll need one more for supporting actors, but we can come back to it.

Speaker: Best picture, we've got our shoe-ins.

Speaker: The Odyssey, Dune. Yes.

Speaker: Do you think Project Hail Mary gets nod?

Speaker: It was doing numbers. Here's the thing. I had a hard time coming up with the 10th pick. for who I think will be nominated. I did put Project Hail Mary after about 40 minutes of self-deliberation.

Speaker: Sure. But I'm not happy. I literally put in quotes, Project Hail Mary. I don't believe in this one. I don't either, but it just seems like it could. What about obsession?

Speaker: No. i I'd argue against If got an nom... okay

Speaker: i'm gonna I'm being straight up honest. I know. They have nominated the last two or three times like a random blew out your budget movie.

Speaker: m F1 should not have been nominated for Best Picture. How's a movie this year generated the buzz that Obsession had? m You know I'm right.

Speaker: You're right. Ten is a lot. Ten is a lot, and... I there's a part of me that wonders if they're going to look and be like, wow, I can't leave this one out. Like it has not been a great year.

Speaker: I'm sorry. It just hasn't. It hasn't. I agree with you. And sure, like, yeah, the back half is going to be loaded, but you really think they're going to be 10 movies that come out that are head and shoulders above obsession in terms of their impact and how good they are.

Speaker: Because right now, the only thing that is really like a bet, there's two things that are a better box office run than obsession. Like realistically, it's the Odyssey and Spider-Man and Spider-Man is not getting nominated and the Odyssey is going to get nominated.

Speaker: So.

Speaker: I was just convinced. Let's do it. I just, it seems like one of those ones where they're going to just put it in there. Now, I don't think Curry gets like a best director nom. I don't think that happens. But the movie made the local news. yeah My mom was telling me that this movie made... like Its box office run made the news.

Speaker: That's crazy. WPRI was reporting on it. Close friend of the pod. Close friend of the pod. Sponsor us, WPRI. Yeah.

Speaker: Okay. Three out of ten. The Odyssey, Dune 3, and Obsession. Those are our shoe-ins.

Speaker: think Dinker. Kind of random, but what what do you guys think about The Adventures of Cliff Booth? Hmm. sequel or sequel to The Post-Ponet Time in Hollywood?

Speaker: Yeah. i think we'll I think we'll all like it, and that'll be it. I think so, too. Okay. Which sucks because it's Fincher. And I'm sure we all love Fincher.

Speaker: But I... Yeah. I think short list. I don't know if it would make top 10 though. Let's put in Wild Horse 9. I have that on my list. I think that's also a shoe-in.

Speaker: Let's put in Ink. Oh.

Speaker: Hmm. Danny. Come on, Danny. What's one about? Rupert Murdoch. Oh, that guy. Fox guy. great guy. Great guy. We love Rupert.

Speaker: ah Big Roop is what we call him. lot of movies this year, ah like a lot of double. What am I trying to say? a lot of filmmakers with two movies this year. What was Danny Boyle's second?

Speaker: The Bone Temple and Ink. That was DaCosta Admission. Oh, shit. That was DaCosta Admission. Take away my podcast, Mike. I'm done. Digger? Malik is a erasing black voices. What?

Speaker: Nia DaCosta, I'm sorry. I paid DaCosta of admission and DaCosta the movie on because on DVD.

Speaker: Okay, The Odyssey, Dune 3, Obsession, Wild Horse 9, Inc. Digger, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Four more. Behemoth.

Speaker: or more i put behemoth the new Tony Gilroy movie starring Pedro Pascal and a bunch of others I think that movie is going to be fucking awesome it looks really sick see I saw a trailer for it and I was just like this is chum in the water for an Oscar it it feels it just feels like it is right it just feels like it's bait and i feel like everybody loved Andor everybody and their mothers give Tony Gilroy something

Speaker: Wildwood as like the the lone animated film. When was the last time an animated film got nominated for best in the last year? Yeah, last year something got nominated.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, no, K-pop wasn't not for best picture. I think they were just animated, like best animated.

Speaker: I thought about Wildwood. So I looked at the director's filmography, didn't know he directed the, here's another double. He directed the He-Man movie that recently came out. um Yeah. And they, he also did Kubo and the two strings. Kubo and the two strings was not nominated for best picture, but it was nominated for best animated lost against, I think, Toy Story four or Toy Story three.

Speaker: Gotcha. It has happened three times, by the way. Only three. Animated nomination. for Best Picture. dying Okay. Beauty and the Beast in ninety ninety one oh up in 1991. Oh. Up in 2009 and Toy Story 3 in 2010.

Speaker: Oh, wow. i think it's I think Wildwood's a shoe one for animated. um It's gotta to be. There's only like one.

Speaker: Were you guys down for Behemoth? Okay. I'm down. I don't know what is about. I know you just said it, but I already forgot. um What about.

Speaker: Now, bear with me here. Whalefall.

Speaker: That would be so sick. I think whalefall will be like one of the funnest times we have at the movies this year. If they make that a category, then yeah. I hope so.

Speaker: A new trailer for that one came out, but I'm not going watch it. I don't need to know more.

Speaker: Austin Abrams gets swallowed by a whale. um um I do think Resident Evil will be a much better movie, though. and almost I'm excited for it. Yeah.

Speaker: What else are we missing? Do we think the Social Reckoning gets a Best Picture nomination? I've been thinking about it. I don't know. I also don't know.

Speaker: Did we put it? We put him for adapted at least, right? Yeah, we did. It's hard not to trust Aaron Sorkin. As a writer, we're good. As a director, I don't i don't know.

Speaker: And so like how is the movie going to feel overall?

Speaker: I'm not sure.

Speaker: If you feel strongly with Project Hail Mary, we can do that. I will do it begrudgingly. I'm okay if it gets snubbed. How do you guys feel about Project Hail Mary now that time has passed?

Speaker: I like it. It was good. Still? Yeah. Okay. Not as good as the book still. Stand by that. But it was a good movie. Yeah. Really good.

Speaker: I'll say really good. Okay. I'll say good.

Speaker: And that's it. um I also put...

Speaker: Did we put Fjord already? Fjord is going to be nominated for Best Picture. Think so? Let's be clear. Yes. Every Palme d'Or winner is at least nominated.

Speaker: Okay. sortll be at? Eight or nine? Eight. Okay.

Speaker: Are we missing anything from the not yet released list? ah There's a few. I put the invite. i don't think so.

Speaker: I think it'd be like for the smaller ones. um We got Digger, Wild Horse 9. I also put La Bola Negra.

Speaker: Yeah, let's add a couple more. International. Yeah. Yeah. So I have so the remaining two I have are both international. So I have La Bola Negra and then I have All of a Sudden, which is the new Ryosuke Hamaguchi movie.

Speaker: I'm a Gucci movie. um I don't know off the top of my head how it's done. Critically at con, it was nominated for the Palm Dior, but it did not win, obviously, because you are did, but it's a three hour movie.

Speaker: That comes out in November, I believe.

Speaker: Ryusuke, Hamaguchi, his filmography. He did Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist. I think Drive My Car was nominated for Best Picture.

Speaker: it was the It was nominated for Best Picture. And then you want to do the black ball for the last one, Two Internationals? Yeah, like that. Yeah. Let's do it. Okay.

Speaker: There's our 10. No takesies backsies. Do we want to do an honorable mention for primetime?

Speaker: I don't. The trailer looks insane. The newest one. Yeah. I think primetime shortlist. I don't know I don't think nomination.

Speaker: Okay. That's fine. I think, I think it's, I think it's like the, one of those few movies that has a really big nomination, Robert Pattinson for actor that just doesn't show up anywhere else where he's like, where he is the movie.

Speaker: That's fine with All right. All right. I'm going to go over our picks and what we put for writing original.

Speaker: We put Digger, Wild Horse nine and the debut. Adapted, we did The Odyssey, Dune 3, The Social Reckoning, and The Invite. Directing, we've got Christopher Nolan for The Odyssey, Denis Villeneuve for Dune 3, Martin McDonough for Wild Horse 9, Danny Boyle for Ink, and Digger with Alejandro Inarratu.

Speaker: We got all five there. Actor in a leading role. Got John Malkovich for Wild Horse 9. Tom Cruise for a Digger. Robert Pattinson for Primetime. Timothy Chalamet for Dune 3. And Sebastian Stan for Fjord.

Speaker: No Matt Damon. That's crazy. That is crazy. But right. Actress. Yeah. Yeah. I like it. Actress in a leading role. Indie Navarrete Obsession. Emily Blunt Disclosure Day.

Speaker: Hoi An Hope. Renata Reinsville for Fjord. And then there's $10 bet from Alex that D-Day is snubbed completely. Anne Hathaway for The Odyssey. This is supporting actress. Anne Hathaway for The Odyssey.

Speaker: Penelope Cruz for La Bola Negra. And Anya Taylor-Joy for Dune 3. That's a base pick. Base pick from base guy?

Speaker: Supporting actor, we got John Leguiziamo for The Odyssey. Antonio Banderas for Tony. I promise you it's not pronounced Leguiziamo. Yeah. I wish it was.

Speaker: Sam Rockwell for Wild Horse 9 and the guy who plays Rocky from Project Hellmere. I'm sorry, I don't know his name. Puppet boy. You never know. yeah ah And then for best picture, we've got The Odyssey, Dune 3, Obsession, Wild Horse 9, Ink, Digger, Behemoth, Fjord, all of a sudden, La Bola Negra.

Speaker: How do you guys feel i feel? I feel the best of the best picture. I feel like I'm going to parlay all of this and going to make generational money. What's the ah call sheet? Is that the betting app? Yeah. That everybody's using.

Speaker: I lost a lot of money there. Let's get in on that. How are you guys feeling with this so far? i just I love how we just have random amounts of people.

Speaker: Maybe we'll fill them in at some point.

Speaker: The thing is, hindsight is 20-20. We might look at this list seven months from now and be like, what the fuck were we thinking? We will laugh. You're to be thinking like that.

Speaker: With what? You're going to thinking like that because of Disclosure Day. I think I'm right, though. i really do. i have not heard anyone talk about this performance one time since we spoke on it in an episode. And you know I'm i'm right.

Speaker: Stranger things have happened.

Speaker: I've seen stranger things. need to start watching Green Lantern. You do. It's really good so far.

Speaker: um like Kyle Chandler. Kyle Chandler for best supporting actor. Green Lantern. Yeah. Yeah. So with to the earlier point that we were saying with um Luca Guadagnino, I we were burned by him last year and I don't want to be burned again.

Speaker: We're going to get burned again by not picking it. Artificial is going to go through the roof. It's going to go brazy. yeah You can make you could make a very interesting movie about Sam Altman because that guy sucks.

Speaker: He's got he's a demon. us He's got a morgue full of skeletons in his closet. Yeah. So I'm really curious to see what this movie is. Andrew Garfield is playing Sam Altman. ah Monica Barbaro is in the movie as well. And then I forget this actor's name, but he's in the show...

Speaker: um The Seth Rogen Apple TV show. But this guy's playing Elon Musk. Let see his name.

Speaker: Cooper Tomlinson. It's not Cooper Tomlinson. He would make a great Elon. He would make great young Elon. you guys know Ike Barinholtz?

Speaker: Yeah. The comedy guy? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's playing Elon Musk in this. I think that's seeing fantastic casting. Yeah, that's inspired.

Speaker: It is. Okay. Any other hot takes you guys have or that you need to get off your chest or changes you want to make or places where you think we're wrong?

Speaker: We're never wrong. I feel like yeah are everyone is counting out the social whatever that movie is called. The social reckoning too much. You think it'll be good?

Speaker: I'm not necessarily saying it's going to be good, but I'm saying I feel like it's going to get lots of buzz. It just feels like something that they're going to just randomly give lots of buzz to.

Speaker: It feels like an Oscar bait movie, but that they're not going to bite on. think it'll be left out to dry. i don't know. There's just something about it that I just can't ignore it.

Speaker: Hmm. I I love Jeremy Strong. I watched that trailer before we recorded. There's so many good actors in it. There is, but like I can't get... I don't know if I like his performance of Mark Zuckerberg from what I've seen.

Speaker: It does seem like almost like a satire. Yeah. It feels like he's playing a character. like He feels like a character. To go back to Tony, Dominic Sessa didn't feel like he was doing an Anthony Bourdain bit.

Speaker: yeah I mean the Jeremy Strong thing it seems like a little alien almost like oh here's like a reptile trying to pretend to be a human oh yeah actually that's no that's that's actually a really good depiction of Zuckerberg but it feels too on the nose he's just weird and I think Jeremy might just be a little weird too but I think Mark is very weird yeah

Speaker: do we think Mikey follows Enora up well

Speaker: You didn't even like Enora, so I can't even ask you that question. I did not like Enora. I just didn't like it as much as everybody else. No, I'm the only one I know that absolutely adored that movie. Enora got Best Picture, didn't it? Yeah, I know, but I'm talking about the The public eye.

Speaker: can't believe that happened. I can't, because it was the best movie of the year that wasn't Dune. It wasn't even close. Do you guys think Dune 3 gets best picture?

Speaker: Imagine this world. it It does its return of the king. Is that possible? Do you see it's possible. Yes. And I hope it's true. You see Dune 3 doing a sweep.

Speaker: just Just the very, very limited stuff I've seen, it just looks unbelievable. It looks better than the Dune 2 trailers were. like I'm actually more excited than I was for Dune 2.

Speaker: And I was like, Dune 2 is going to be my number one movie of the year. And it was my number one movie the year the whole Jesus Christ. I've been shielding my eyes as much as possible. And I still see stuff. And it's just... It's crazy.

Speaker: It has to work. Is there a world where it sweeps? It sweeps directing, actor, maybe it gets actress. It gets cinematography. And it gets best picture. The Anya Taylor-Joy, if she's nominated and then wins... it does, we need wage jihad for Lisa and Al-Gaib. We need to go into space and do it. I don't i don't even know who we're fighting, but we're going to do it. We just have to do it. I'm 100% on board.

Speaker: Okay. All right. Well, we're going put this out on the internet for the world to see, and will forever be there. So we may look like prophets. We may look like complete idiots.

Speaker: But only you, the listener, can let us know that. um Anything else for you guys?

Speaker: Rip Dolly Parton. Rip Dolly Parton, rip Tim Curry, and rip Hayden Panettier.

Speaker: We'll see you in the next episode. Bye. Bye. Bye.

Speaker: Thank
