Cavs' Play-In Victory Boosts Morale
00:00:13
Speaker
Hey, Cavs fans. Welcome to another episode of the Cavs Pick and Roll Podcast, the podcast for diehard Cavs fans. Cory here with you as always, along with Alex, celebrating a win, Alex, the last regular game of the season. The Cavs pull it out.
00:00:30
Speaker
Yeah, gotta celebrate that win. That was, haven't been too many of those lately, you know? No, no, that was much needed. And even though Milwaukee basically sat every player that mean anything to their roster, we gladly will take it. It helped us kind of secure some positioning within the play-in tournament, which we'll get into here in a little bit.
Cavs' Recent Struggles and Importance of Win
00:00:55
Speaker
But I think also just from a psychological standpoint,
00:00:59
Speaker
It was just nice to get a win and just such a convincing win at home for fan appreciation night and it just generally looked like the team was having fun. Yeah, absolutely. I'm just looking through the schedule here. It just feels like we've been on a hell of a losing streak lately and it's like the worst time of the year for us to be.
00:01:20
Speaker
to have fallen apart and have not figured it out yet. And here we are going into the play in tournament. Nervous, I'm real nervous.
Standings Analysis: Raptors, Nets, Hawks, Hornets
00:01:30
Speaker
Yeah, it's hard because it's, we talked a little bit about this in the last episode, the Bulls are the only other team that has been struggling and it's because of injuries as well, but all the other teams around us seem to figure it out over the last,
00:01:45
Speaker
three to four weeks now, you know, you have the Raptors just climb up into the standings here, you know, they're the fifth seed, they were behind us, you know, the last time we recorded, they were behind us, you know, in the standings. And, you know, the Nets figured it out, which isn't surprising. But then like the Hawks, the Hornets, they're winning games and just yeah, the Cavs three and seven in their last 10. And it's been rough lately.
00:02:11
Speaker
But with this win today, again, it does secure some positioning.
Kevin Love's Stellar Performance
00:02:16
Speaker
And who would have thought, Alex, at the beginning of the year, we would have meaningful Cavs games in April. Nobody predicted that. Seriously. I'm just happy to be in the play-in tournament at this point, because at the beginning of the season, everybody had us count it out. Oh, yeah.
00:02:35
Speaker
Oh yeah. So it's incredible. Today was great. I mean, Kevin loves, man, 32 points in 10 rebounds in 15 minutes. He could not miss. He had eight threes, Alex, 18 points in the first quarter. Yeah, I was watching when he hit three of them back to back to back. He just had that, like on the third one, he was just like, all right, heat check, turned around, shot it, swish. It was like, damn. Yeah. And again, I don't care that the Bucks rested all their starters.
00:03:04
Speaker
you're still in the NBA game and you still gotta hit the shots. So just great to see. And the team just generally looked like they were having fun. Mobley had a great night, 18 points, 10 rebounds, marketing 23 and seven. Garland actually didn't have to do very much this game, 11 points, but he dished out eight assists. Just the team looked like they were having fun. And I feel like that might go a long way more than what maybe the typical fan might think because you just carry
Momentum from Victory and Play-In Implications
00:03:34
Speaker
that momentum into the next game. You can get a little bit of your swag back, a little bit of your confidence back, and there's no more regular season games. Every game counts now, and you just take it one game at a time here.
00:03:45
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, I hope so. I hope it gives us some momentum. You know, having Mobley back for
Impact of Mobley and Allen's Absence
00:03:50
Speaker
this final game was huge. He's just such a lift on the defensive end. He's just completely invaluable. And it's hard to believe because he's only a rookie. I mean, he's a young kid in the impact that he has on this team in his very first year of his NBA, of his NBA career is incredible. And having him back right before the playing tournament,
00:04:12
Speaker
Man, you know, I wish Allen would have played. Like, I know he was out there warming up with the team. I thought he was gonna play, but he never checked in. I would have loved to see him at least get a few minutes to try to get some, to mesh a little bit, you know?
00:04:30
Speaker
I agree. And that was one of the concerns I brought up on the last episode.
Speculation on Allen's Return for Play-In
00:04:34
Speaker
And today's game would have been a perfect game to do that because once you saw the injury report come out from Milwaukee the day before into today's game, this would have been a perfect game for Alan to come back. It's very low pressure. You had a feeling the Cavs, unless they really screwed up, we're going to win this game. And Alan could have got 10 to 15 minutes.
00:04:58
Speaker
of play, but with that being said, I feel like for this play-in game, I have a hunch.
00:05:05
Speaker
that he'll make that game. And those pregame workouts, supposedly the one that you did today before the game against the Bucks was, not the intense maybe isn't the best word, but like the longest, you know what I mean? It feels like he's right there. And a playing game that has significance and importance, I feel like that could be the game that circled for him to come back.
00:05:30
Speaker
I wanted to go back to Mobley real quick. I agree with everything that you said. Do you feel that he has the rookie of the year? Is that a lock? Is that done you think? I haven't been here in too much chatter. Like. Yeah, I haven't heard too much about him, but I mean,
Mobley's Rookie of the Year Candidacy
00:05:45
Speaker
in my opinion, yeah, yeah, it's a lock. I think he makes such a huge impact on both sides of the court for this team more than any of the other rookies do for their teams. So yeah, I think it's a far and away Mobley.
00:06:00
Speaker
Yeah, I think so, too. And when I say I haven't heard much chatter, I mean, like, I haven't even really seen too many articles popping up trying to even create a debate that's not there. You know what I mean? Like, Scotty Barnes versus Evan Mopel. Like, you know, it's like, yeah, Scotty Barnes, you know, Jalen Green, like, Kay Cunningham, like, you're all after Mopel. Like, there's really not that much justification. So, hopefully, that's what happens. And it'll be really cool when that's announced at some point, if that is the case.
00:06:29
Speaker
But yeah, going back to Allen, really hope that he's able to play the next game.
Cavs' Surprising Season and Nets Play-In Matchup
00:06:35
Speaker
The Cavs have been very inconsistent, had some very ugly losses, Alex, that Orlando game. Gosh, probably one of the worst losses of the season. Again, another team that you're supposed to win against. And at that point, they still had a shot at the sixth seed, but it is what it is. Hell of a season, hell of a fun ride, never thought.
00:06:57
Speaker
we were going to go down this path. I thought it was going to be more of the same. And now they got to play in game Alex against a familiar foe. It just kind of feels familiar at least. It feels like there's a little bit of history there dating back to the, to the Collins Sexton games, you know, last year and stuff against them. That's, but they'll be going up against Kyrie and Kevin Durant and- Boy, Corey, I wish it was any other team at this point.
00:07:22
Speaker
Yeah, we talked about this. Yeah, I mean, the Nets are, they're gonna be the hottest team. They're the best team in the playing. So, I know their record doesn't reflect it, but no doubt, they got so much star power and so many good players on that team, you know? Yeah, you gotta be realistic about it. I mean, they're gonna be the team that writers and analysts and broadcasters will talk about.
00:07:51
Speaker
they're the team that you don't wanna go up against in the first round, right? Because it has the biggest potential for an upset, right? Because you have Kyrie and KD, and you know what? We know all about that. When we had Kyrie and LeBron, that was enough. That was enough. That was enough in a lot of cases. You don't need much more than that. If both those guys go off for 30 plus, it's probably gonna be very tough to beat them, especially in a seven game series. And the Cavs get them on the road in Brooklyn,
00:08:19
Speaker
Uh, for one game, you know, and, and things have changed now, Alex, you know, Kyrie's playing, playing home games and things like that. Uh, look, look tough today against the Pacers. I saw some of the highlights and just like, okay, Cavs gotta be ready for this one. Gotta be. Yeah.
Bucks' Resting Players and Playoff Positioning
00:08:36
Speaker
I was looking at this and you know what?
00:08:39
Speaker
I knew that the Bucks were going to be sitting, they're star players. Of course, they sat Giannis, Portis, Middleton. I was trying to figure out if there was a reason that they would just want to give this game away to the Cavs, if there was any positioning on their end.
00:09:02
Speaker
that either they wanted the calves to be in the eighth seed or make it and not be a ninth tenth seed, or if they wanted to... I was trying to figure out if they stayed number two or...
00:09:16
Speaker
Yeah, it's because they knew that the Cavs would beat the Nets and they wanted to play the Cavs instead of the Nets. You know what I mean? I hope so. So, Sexton's gonna come back just out of the smoke and just, you know. That'd be incredible. Sexton comes running out of the tunnel. Right, right. Jeez. So, I saw a lot of people online.
00:09:36
Speaker
I saw a lot of people speculating online it was because they wanted to purposely lose and face the Bulls in the first round who's also struggling and has injuries and like Lonzo Ball's out for the year I heard and that may kind of sense but you and I were looking at the standings before recording and we still see the Bucks in that two spot so I'm not quite sure and maybe it was maybe it was truly just to rest up
00:09:59
Speaker
I mean, think about it.
Play-In Tournament Structure and Cavs' Path
00:10:00
Speaker
The Bucks, you know, there's a playing game on Tuesday. Game two of the playing series is probably Thursday or something like that. And game one will probably be like Friday or Saturday. So the Bucks get a nice long break by sitting their players today. And that's one of the disadvantages you have of being in the playing games. You know, you kind of you don't stop playing. You don't get the rest like these other teams are.
00:10:25
Speaker
in the first round of the playoffs. Yeah, the Bulls are playing right now, which I don't think it matters whether they win or lose because they're more than one game. Either way. Yeah, either way. Right. The Nets beat the Pacers, which I don't think makes one bit of difference either.
00:10:45
Speaker
It would have, because a lot of people got it, I saw this and I was just kind of shaking my head like, guys, come on, it's not gonna happen. But the Nets were up big on the Pacers early and the Pacers went on like a 19 to three run to open up the second half and got back in the game. And it got a lot of Cavs fans excited on Twitter I saw, because if the Cavs would have won and the Nets would have lost, that could have made things- We would have slipped up at the seventh. Yeah, yeah. Right, right. It would have made things a little bit more interesting, right?
00:11:15
Speaker
So it was closed for a little while, but you know, the Nets did what they're going to do, you know, lean on Kyrie, lean on Kevin Durant, and they pulled away in the fourth quarter. But it was just fun, though, seeing the excitement of
00:11:31
Speaker
fans online and watching the game and watching the crowd and watching the players and watching other scores around the league to see how it potentially was going to impact our team. And it just feels like, you know, we weren't spoiled, but we had so many years of deep playoff runs and four years to the finals, but it just feels like it's been an eternity since, you know, we were able to do this in April. So it was just kind of an exciting day.
00:11:57
Speaker
in the NBA in general and just kind of watching how everything, you know, ended, you know, last last season, last game in the season. So Atlanta won, giving them 42 wins, Charlotte won, giving them 42 wins. And if the Cavs would have lost this game, they would have been at 42 wins. So I wonder,
00:12:19
Speaker
Would we have had the tiebreaker over the Hawks or Hornets? I don't know. We would have had 43 because we're 44 and 38. Oh yeah, you're right. And I don't know what the tiebreakers would have been. I'm just glad that it didn't go down that path because again, can you imagine the morale right now if the Cavs would have lost this game to the Bucks today with all the players that they sat?
00:12:41
Speaker
We'd be having a much different tune right now. So thank God that didn't happen. And I looked this up, Alex. So I had to, you know, the playing tournament, this is the second year of it. Last year, we obviously didn't have to worry about it because we weren't a great team. So I had to look this up. And the way this works is we're going to Brooklyn on Tuesday to play them.
00:13:03
Speaker
The winner of that game will be the seventh seed and play the second seed in the first round of the playoffs, which right now is the Bucks. The loser plays the winner between the Hawks and the Hornets to be the eighth seed and play against the Miami Heat. So what that means is if the Cavs went on Tuesday, they're done. They're in. They're in the playoffs officially.
00:13:24
Speaker
if they lose, they get another crack at it between the Hawks and the Hornets, which sounds like much more, you know, less scary opponents, although Trae Young and, you know, you never know what can happen. Right. But that's what they got to do. They got they got two cracks at it to get into the playoffs officially. And it's it's it's nerve wrecking, but it's also exciting. And imagine if they beat the somehow beat the Nets on Tuesday. Imagine the confidence then in the morale.
00:13:51
Speaker
Going in we put a lot of faith back into the team and back into the fan base. I think if they were somehow able to just get it done on Tuesday and take care of business. So who would you rather have Hawks or Hornets?
00:14:04
Speaker
I'd rather have the Hornets. And the reason being is because one, not that I am totally, you know, nervous of him or anything, but I heard Gordon Hayward is done, who is a, I don't know what his numbers are this year, but he's got to be a 15 plus score, you know, a game, right? And I just, I think about the, the Hornets roster and yeah, you got, you know, Lamello out there who's, who's a nice point guard and can do some things, but I looked down that roster and there's not a lot of,
00:14:31
Speaker
Not a lot of scary names. Scary Terry. Scary Terry, I will say this. No pun intended. He does love to kill the Cavs and the Cavs would be hosting that game in Cleveland and he's a local guy and he always seems to tear it up when he's back in Cleveland and has a bunch of family and friends in for that game. So yeah, I would go with the Hornets. How about you? Yeah, I'd go with the Hornets just because
00:14:59
Speaker
Trey Young, he can really go off and do some damage and some nights he's just unstoppable. And I don't feel like the Hornets really have that player, that caliber of a player yet. So yeah, I'd go with the Hornets for sure. Totally agree. And let's say
Preferred Playoff Opponents: Heat vs Bucks
00:15:16
Speaker
the Cavs get in, do you have a preference? Like, would you rather see the Cavs go up against the Miami Heat? Or would you rather see the Cavs go up against, it looks like would be the Bucks, the Milwaukee Bucks?
00:15:30
Speaker
That's tough. It's very tough. How about neither? Well, it's going to happen. Those are going to be two ugly games. And here's your alternative.
00:15:44
Speaker
you know, your alternative is not playing either and going home early and getting your draft pick back. That's another scenario here, which I know what will happen is, you know, the Cavs get into the playoffs by winning one of these games, you know, they have an early, say they have an early exit, there'll be a lot of, you know, in hindsight fans saying they should have just taken the lottery pick back and boo-hoo-hoo and not see, my God, the growth that this season had,
00:16:12
Speaker
the growth that this team had this year and the potential moving forward. I don't think that would be your choice. So now I'll re-ask you again, would you rather play Miami, play the Bucks, or go home and have a long summer of no more Cavs basketball and drafting another rookie?
00:16:29
Speaker
Play Miami or the Bucks. You're still thinking about it, all right? You know what I'm doing is I'm looking through the schedule and I'm thinking, okay, I know we've beaten Miami. We beat... We've beaten both of them. Yeah. We beat both of them. We crushed Milwaukee when they were at full strength. We beat Miami twice. Yeah.
Defending Against Giannis
00:16:55
Speaker
know. I'm afraid of the Bucks just because of Giannis. Like Miami, I understand they're a good team. They're the, I mean, they're the best team in the East. They have the best record. They got Jimmy Butler who can, who can go off, but Giannis is possibly the MVP again, repeat. So I don't know. Throw Mobley on him.
00:17:17
Speaker
throw them all down. Yeah. And Lamar still needs to put some meat on those bones to bang the post with Giannis. Yeah. Giannis is always... I'm going with the heat though. Giannis is tough because he could do so many things and he's... that he shouldn't be able to do for his size, right? So it's like, God, you know...
00:17:40
Speaker
I could see the Cavs trying to put like marketing on him, kind of like they try to put him on LeBron during the last Lakers game and that didn't go very well. It's just it's just tough because it's like, yeah, you're right. Mobley, you know.
00:17:53
Speaker
He can keep up with them maybe speed-wise, but that's about it. And maybe distract some shots because of his length, but he probably would drive right by him.
Importance of Playoff Experience for Young Cavs
00:18:01
Speaker
Mark it in, same thing, he's gonna drive right by him, and Akuro's too small, Stevens is too small, although at times they'll throw them at him just to try to throw somebody quicker at him. But that alone can be the series right there, right? Because he's a player that is capable of doing those things. And looking at Miami, what scares me with Miami is, yeah, you have,
00:18:23
Speaker
You have, you have Giannis on the Bucks that scares me, but on Miami, you have two or three players that scare me. You have Jimmy, you have Bam.
00:18:32
Speaker
you have just kind of more players that could do very nice things for them. And it feels like they're a little bit of a deeper team right now as well. So both match-ups will be tough, but at the same time, this team needs to go through this. They need to go through this playoff experience, get that experience and take that into next year and realize what it takes to play a full season, what it takes to go through a playoff series.
00:18:59
Speaker
And if they do have an early exit, it's still a successful season and they build upon that and they continue to grow to take the next steps next year. Don't be a play in tournament, be a top four seed, continue to improve, make noise, get further in the playoffs, make some more additions, bring Rubio back if you can, you know, make smart additions like that and so on and so forth. So I'm excited either way, I'm excited. So you'd rather see him play the Bucks?
00:19:26
Speaker
I'd rather see them play the Bucks, I think. Yeah. All right. I'd rather see them play the Bucks, but it'll be a tough matchup either way. All of this. They're gonna have to earn all this.
Concerns About Cavs' Inconsistency
00:19:36
Speaker
The Nets certainly isn't gonna be an easy game. And even if they play the Hawks or the Hornets, it's not an easy game either. Even though it's at home, most teams are gonna be fighting for their lives as well. Like, you're gonna get the best from every team here on out, right? So the Cavs have to give their best.
00:19:53
Speaker
The one thing that does kind of make me a little bit uneasy is Alex, the recent play, it's like what version of the Cavs are you going to get? Are we going to get a stinker on Tuesday? Or is the team actually going to show up?
00:20:08
Speaker
You know, can they show up consistently for, for a seven game series or are they going to have two or three clunkers? And that's, that's, that's, that's the ball game. That's it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's why I'm so nervous about it because they just haven't ever since all-star break, they seem to have fallen apart. They've got no defense. Everybody looks lost on offense. It's, it's a completely
LeVert's Integration Challenges
00:20:30
Speaker
different team. I don't understand.
00:20:32
Speaker
What happened, you know, we added Lavert who should have been incredible and a credible addition on the offensive end and he just can't make a shot. I think he went two for seven tonight. He just, I don't know what is going on, but it's yeah, it's they just haven't put it all together and they've only won three out of the out of their last 11.
00:20:53
Speaker
Yeah, it's tough. It's very tough. And that's the one part that probably makes a lot of cast fans uneasy right now. But again, if they can reset and just take it one game at a time, they're capable of beating anybody.
Reflection on Season's Success and Enjoyment
00:21:14
Speaker
They could beat these teams. Can they do it in a series? I don't know. We got to see, but they're capable. It's there, but they're also capable of losing to any team. And we've seen that recently with, you know, some of these pass losses. Orlando. Orlando. Yeah. You know what I mean? So it's just, again, what version are we going to get during the playing games and if they make it to the playoffs?
00:21:38
Speaker
And either way, it's still just amazing that we're here. What a hell of a season. What a fun ride. Definitely made watching Kaz basketball. You know, it's always enjoyable watching Kaz basketball, but man, especially that first half of the season leading up to the All-Star break and then having the game, the All-Star game in Cleveland, man, we were on the highs of highs. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they completely exceeded expectations this season.
00:22:06
Speaker
I couldn't have asked for anything more. I expect great things next season. So, you know, Sexton coming back. They'll have all these new players will have times to gel. It'll be great.
Anticipation for Next Season's Growth
00:22:20
Speaker
Yeah, it'll be good. They'll also be expectations next year. And that'll put a little bit of pressure on the group, but it's the windows now though. You could see with Garland, Mobley, Allen, especially with their ages. And then you got guys like Akuro and Sexton, if he does come back. And even Laverde, who hasn't quite figured it out consistently yet, he is under contract and he's capable. You have a very exciting core.
00:22:50
Speaker
Kevin Love, Kevin Love's still here for one more year. And if he can give you another season like he did this year, man, the noise that can be made next year is very exciting to think about. And props to Kevin Love, man, because I beat him up since we started this podcast, which has been what, almost three years ago now, I think. And he played, believe it or not, I saw this today and I was just astounded by it.
00:23:15
Speaker
This season is the most games. This season is the most amount of games he's played for the Cavs since he's been here and he's like in season eight, which is also ridiculous to believe. But he played 74 games this year.
Kevin Love's Season-Long Consistency
00:23:32
Speaker
which is quite a feat for Kevin Love. And he only missed some games due to being out for COVID. He didn't have some injury that kept him out for a month and a half or made him miss 25 games or something like that. And I don't think he'll win it, Alex. And I could see him getting some six man of the year votes whenever that voting happens.
00:23:54
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. I'd love to see that. Love, love, love. He's deserving of that. Love, love, love. Alex loves love, and now he can love, he can love him again in public. And on the train. Bring out those Kevin Love jerseys again, because he's horrible. Yeah, I never stopped wearing the Kevin Love jersey, man. I know I got a Mobley jersey now, so I've been wearing that one this season. There you go. It's been good luck so far. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Gotta keep it out of the washing machine.
Moses Brown's Development Potential
00:24:24
Speaker
I wanted to ask your opinion about one other small thing that the Cavs did roster-wise and just what your take is in general. But Moses Brown has been converted and will be with the Cavs for the rest of the season, whether that's just the playing games or playoff games as well. But he obviously had to step in, especially when Mobley and Allen were both out, started a couple games.
00:24:51
Speaker
Was able to do some nice things at times. Seems to be a fan favorite. I guess if you're a big guy, you know, we love you here in Cleveland, apparently. But what's your, you have any opinions or takes on Moses Brown? Like, would you entertain keeping him around past the season?
00:25:08
Speaker
Yeah, I think so. I mean, he's super young, like the rest of the team. He's only 22 years old at a UCLA. Seven foot two, another seven footer for us to stick on Giannis or Embiid or whoever we need to, right? Rotate him in there when, you know, when you got to sit Alan or Mobley or Markinen. Alan and Mobley, they can bring that defensiveness. Markinen's not quite as great on defense, and I think Moses Brown can fill that when you don't need him on
00:25:38
Speaker
offense because you got your offensive firepower from from other players. So I think he's a really good addition, especially when you got him coming off the bench for like, you know, eight to 12 minutes somewhere in there just to give other guys relief. I think he does fill that defensive void. So yeah, I think he was a great pickup. Yeah, I totally agree and a lot of fans seem to also agree with that. And there's just always
00:26:03
Speaker
Uh, curiosity and an intriguingness when you, when you bring someone like that, who just feels very raw still, but you see the potential and you throw the age out there being 22 kind of fits right into that age bracket of this core team. And he's not going to be somebody that's going to eat up, you know, your salary cap, you know, the cash can probably bring them back.
00:26:25
Speaker
you know, on a multi-year deal if they wanted to, like a two, three-year deal or something like that, for relatively cheap. And could be an interesting backup center option, you know, which we do need. You know, it was nice having Ed Davis on the roster this year, but that feels kind of like a one and done.
00:26:42
Speaker
You know, not somebody you want to have to rely on too, too heavily. If this kind of scenario happens again, you want a young guy running around out there. And yeah, Moses Brown seems to fit that bill right now. And I thought that was a good, smart decision by the Cavs to convert him and make sure he's at least here for the rest of whatever happens this season. Yeah. Yeah. Saying he's very raw is a very good, that's a very good descriptor for him. Very raw, yet very athletic and very energetic. And sometimes you just need that out on the court.
00:27:13
