The Beach Football League is the first professional football league to be played on beaches.

Speaker: And we're just excited, man. We've been a Rolling Stone. And now we got two weeks. You know, the only day this year second Day the Patriots won't be playing for the back half of the year. This Labor Day weekend, September 5th and 6th, we're having Newport Beach Fest, where Fitzy may even himself be on location. But we have a ton of talent coming out, men's and women's tackle games coached by former NFL players like Will Blackman and Max Lane, Patrick Pass, bringing his wife, housewives of Rhode Island, oh yeah Monique. Speaker: No first downs. I'm an analytical. I'm a nerd guy. I'm a football guy. What is the style of play? Is there vertical routes? Can you do that to sand? A lot of horizontal slings. No rules.

Speaker: so rules. and like People are getting tossed. What does it look like? The longest yard. I looked up and I saw you have a goalie. Explain what it looks like. Yeah, there are some hybrid rules. So just think of football field. It's happening.

Speaker: and with a football field or really just cut a football field in half and that's our field. We play four to the half line, four to score because of what I'm saying. There's no real room for measurements or no one's going to get it right, right?

Speaker: And then we don't have kicking because a lot of the guys need a barefoot and wearing socks. Sorry, Adam Vinatieri. We may add it later. was going say, what about Olindo Mari and some of the great barefoot kickers in NFL history? That is true, and it's not to say that we won't add it.

Speaker: But right now we use goalies to protect the net from a quarterback throwing the ball in for a field goal, i.e. a throw goal. And if the the goalie catches it, it's a live ball, a pump return or a kickoff. So there's some hybrid rules. There's a little bit of hockey in there. You get a penalty, you're out of man. You're down a man for that play.

Speaker: um We have a game breaker which is like an onside kick. You get to use that once a game. If you score, you can score again from the 10 for one play. There's a lot of little nuances in the game, but it is a fun, fast-flowing game. It's full tackle, but we're on sand. We've had zero injuries thus far in 30-plus games. So the goal is that VFL, beach football becomes the next Olympic sport with the growth of flag football now being an Olympic sport and volleyball being a beach Olympic sport.

Speaker: Who's to say football can't be one? So we've all seen point break. We've all seen top gun football movies that ah played on the beach. it's It's overdue. So I'm glad to be at the helm.

Speaker: Pretty unique rules. How did you come up with this league? I might have mentioned before the audio got cut off, but I was mentioning that I was sitting in the back of a meeting room as an intern for the 49ers, and I was just drawing up the rules, thinking about if I don't get this job, I'm going to start my own beach football league. and And as a former player, knowing all the intricacies of rules like you say you're a student of the game.

Speaker: I didn't want to make it too difficult to understand or to pick up. So it's really simple. It's four to score. We're on sand. It's one foot in bounds to be a catch. So we just wanted to nuance in a way where it's easier access. We just need a football and the beach and you can play BFL style.

Speaker: So yeah, totally. So before we get to current day, you passing into the practice, I was going to ask you, you were a seventh-round pick in 2003 from Cal. And how was it, I guess, emotionally, trying to make that roster in 2003 with Cal Tech as the head coach? How difficult was it to be in that room and work yourself every day and not knowing if you're going to make the How did that feel? What emotionally?

Speaker: It's definitely like mixed emotions are heavy in training camp as a player. It's super foxhole, right? All the players are like cut off. from You don't want to really... be in the fandom too much because it could take you out of your game.

Speaker: As a seventh round pick, you know, I i never knew. like i i actually was injured during training camp my rookie year. So no one even knew what I was capable of.

Speaker: But i even in my second year in training camp and participating, no one feels like they've made the team. Even the starting quarterback, it's it's one of those things where you're grateful to be there and it's such a blessing to be part of an and NFL you know program.

Speaker: But once you get closer to Labor Day, you're still thinking, like, did that one misread? that one missed tackle in that preseason game you know cost me going back to the couch?

Speaker: So it's it's a life-changing, eye-opening experience for players. And I know playing under Vilicek, no one felt safe. you also like appreciate how much, how much grinding and how much effort it takes for other six and seven ground players, not named Tom Brady, if you will, to make a roster known what you went through?

Speaker: Absolutely. I mean, It's usually the guys that do shake out of that. um you know it's a It's the media, it's the fandom, and then it's your own personal belief, which really your personal belief in yourself matters the most.

Speaker: A lot of expectations around the first round pick or the seventh round pick, it can get construed and some guys can get caught up in that noise. um But it's always great to see guys shake out of it and you get the Julian Edelman's right.

Speaker: You get the Tom Brady's, you get the later round, the undrafted guys, the Malcolm Butler's. So many stories of guys that, you know, weren't expected to be what they were and are now household names, especially for the Patriots.

Speaker: Pats are to probably have to rely on some later round, if not UDFA-style guys this year if they're going to generate a pass rush. So, yeah, we're going to be looking for the new Tully Banticane maybe even as much as this year, guys. Yeah, and that actually leads me into my next question. What should we be looking for when we're down at training camp? What is something that maybe the common fan shows up and watches training camp and just they're just watching football, but, you know, ball-no-er shows up. And, you know, we were talking before we got on the pod, like,

Speaker: Where the coach puts the player out there in the reps. Are they leading off the reps? Are they stuffed back down? Should us fans read into that when we see a player that was on the second team rep get first team reps and then go back to the second team? Is there some is that valid to read into, I guess?

Speaker: I would say yes. I mean, it definitely gets the picture gets clear later in the year or later in sorry in training camp where you're seeing guys either getting more reps because they didn't get enough or it's because they were elevated.

Speaker: um Obviously, the last game ah preseason, which is now the third game, you don't have as many games to put you know put it out there. So you do want to notice, like, who are the guys that maybe weren't getting as much reps?

Speaker: Are they getting them earlier in the pre in the preseason? Are they getting them later? Or you see veterans out there taking rips reps in the third, fourth quarter preseason game. That's a big indicator that they may be on the bubble.

Speaker: um But then you got guys who are coming off of injury too that coaches may not have got a chance to look at. um So there's a lot of different things. Grable, you know, I would i want compare him to Belichick, but in some aspects, you know, you never know what he's thinking. But you definitely know he's putting out his best product and he's going to invest in his best, what he thinks is his best.

Speaker: So anyone that's getting reps, it's for a reason. Yeah. guy like Brable, who was basically became Dale Donuts and was kicked to the curb by the Steelers, finds a second life here and becomes a borderline Hall of Famer, a household legend around here as well. He'll always appreciate guys like this year alone. We'll say like the Swinsons and the Ponders and people that like no one even heard of before draft day. level When the waiver wire came around. Yeah, Kaleel Jacobs, right?

Speaker: Like, i think I think, tell me if I'm wrong, and I am a lot, so that's why people talk to me. But, like yeah like, when's the best time to flash? Is it practice? Is it during the game? what I think the answer is always.

Speaker: Always. Anytime you're given an opportunity to treat every single rep, whether it's against the Dirty Birds from Philadelphia, a random rainy Tuesday in the meeting room, or, you know, under the bright preseason lights, that's when you've got to show up and show up. And that goes for everyone, and even the starters that or you think are the assumed starters, right?

Speaker: um The reason why they're in that position is because every rep matters. Every film study, every little detail to your health, how you're taking care of yourself, how you're hydrating.

Speaker: Everything is is it matters. um And some guys do get some leeway as rookie or younger players that have a ton of upside and I've seen guys that definitely were slow starters and then they they definitely their talent and then their actual ability to be a pro came into play but training camp it's really you know anyone anyone can have a bullet with their name on it on cut day and so or even to get traded you know Lori Malloy was traded at the very end of my training camp and when I came back from the Niners Richard Seymour

Speaker: was traded at the end of my training camp. And, you know, so there's always a surprise at training in camp. You never really know if there's a guy who's really playing well, he might be trade bait. So I know you're on the defensive side of the ball, Tully, but I have to ask you the obvious question. You played with Combrady.

Speaker: You see what Drake May is doing out there. What do you see in Drake May? What do you think makes him special or makes him, you know, in the same kind of conversation? Obviously, a long career needs to happen before he's in the same conversation as Brady. But from a skill set perspective and what you've seen, what do you like in Drake May?

Speaker: He has it all. I mean, you can't really say that about Tom until towards the end of his career, right? But Tom, you know, didn't have the measurable Drake did coming in the league, obviously the athleticism, but then the ability to just go out and make a play.

Speaker: um You know, he had a tough Super Bowl, and I'm probably sure he's not getting as much sleep as he did last year. um But his willingness to compete, I think, is is on par, and his, you know, I think taking the game as serious as he can, where some players,

Speaker: quarterbacks take these for granted. and He had that year with Mayo, he had last year. so his trajectory in comparison with Tom is pretty on par for the course.

Speaker: Let's just see how he bounces back from that loss. in somebody who always tries to spin a negative into a positive call me crazy but you know not that anything would have been wrong with a seventh super bowl and mr craft haven't spent a couple million dollars to demo the end zone but to me seeing how well things have gone for drake all all the sophomore season the miraculous run they made last year going 14 and 3. i'll spend the negative deposit i think in a lot of ways losing the super bowl but more importantly not playing his best not looking like the Drake May that everyone fell in love with last year, not looking like the North Carolina Superman that he was.

Speaker: Like, I think that is going to light a fire under his soon-to-be very well compensated ass to make him play even better. And they surrounded him, I think, with the weapons, the assets, and the talent this year to, like, really take a game that already is at the next level, next, next, next level.

Speaker: I want to ask you about rookie draft rookie Yakuza. Did you say Yakuza? It's Yakuza, right? I like Yakuza, but I know it's Yakuza. Anyway, so just about a guy who's maybe like had some contract issues, you know, injury, questionable injury, history, things happening there. How do you feel about the fact that he's coming to the camp of the game as an edge rusher? He's a lot of a broad talent, but again, he's someone who maybe is coming out little bit slower. How do you feel about someone's progression like that in the game at this? And you see flashes. What do you guys think? I mean, it's all about having those moments, those big moments when they count. It doesn't really matter how long you've been out or any of that. Especially as a pass rusher, you know, you're Third downs is where you make your bread and butter in life at that position. Speaking of taking hits.

Speaker: you Scott, it was you and your untold Patriots plot. I'll get you in the end if it's the last thing I do. a

Speaker: Speaking of making big moments. Did anyone think someone was going to order a hit on Tully? That's crazy.

Speaker: I wanted to take my lawyer. I'll be in touch. So actually Scott and I, Scott and paid for that to fall on you. We were going to take over as co-commissioners of the BFL. Damn it. It almost worked. Yeah. As you were. Sorry. Yeah. But speaking of big moments as we're going to I mean, it all comes down to getting make plays it matters on third down on the one-on-one matchup he gets, whether he's getting in practice or getting them in the games, you got to win those matches. It doesn't matter what round your pick drafted, any of that stuff. Uh,

Speaker: you have to make plays when they matter and so um especially if you're limited early in training camp you have to make those those plays count even if it's the effort you may not get the sack but if you trace your steps and go down and make the tackle downfield cause a fumble do something slap somebody do anything just make it look good uh you got to take a advantage of those big moments so he wasn't at ota's he wasn't at camp he wasn't at any of the things because he was having a fun piece was very much behind so your your take is that he can make up that ground that that is a very achievable task ahead of him that he we could see him week one we could see him he's an edge rusher third down that's where he's going make money because i was i was of the opinion that that really set him back we saw in the preseason game it looked like he had one move and couldn't counter to a second movement like was like that might have been what he learned at camp so um is that a bad take that bad read no i mean it's definitely

Speaker: You know, like I said, if he's not taking advantage of the moments, you only have so much time to correct that. i Like I said earlier, I sat out all the training camp my rookie to from a groin pool, and then I was on PUP for the first six games of the season. But in practice – And the times of that Bill would put me one on one against Matt Light after the practice, I had to kick his ass. Right? I had to show, okay, we didn't this guy's not dead weight.

Speaker: They're not going to keep dead weight. So in the moments that matter, whether it's in practice, in the film, when no one's looking or when everyone's looking, yeah it's his time to shine. yeah and also like just a broad view type of question having been to two super bowls and of course as you know i and many other patriots fans firmly believe you got screwed out of going to the one in 2006 where you would have kicked the crap out of the bears as well but whatever i'm glad they blew i'm glad someone blew up the rca dome before i did um when you go to a super bowl obviously you went to the two you won those two with the pass but when you go

Speaker: How do you go about not being complacent? How do you go about not resting on your laurels? I know the Pats lost, so they have more incentive to get back to it. But how do you make sure that you keep that fire maintained all season long and that you incentivize yourself to improve upon what was already a dynamic season?

Speaker: That's a great question. That's all I ask is great questions. In the business of it, thank you. i mean yeah The biggest thing was you don't want to change too much. right It's the biggest game of the year, but it doesn't mean all of a sudden you've got to get tight and start you know changing your whole routine.

Speaker: biggest thing i mean Me and Corey Dillon used to play Madden almost every day after practice. And so... During the Super Bowl, we made sure we brought our Playstations. They might have been a PlayStation 2 at the time. um And that's what we did after meetings. We don't we don't go out to the clubs. We don't go out to the bars where all the fandom and crazy stuff can happen. It's like, no, we're going to lock in and play some football.

Speaker: You know, and and it's like our way of still keeping the same routine of what we did during the season, but also at the same time, like, you know, still being loose. You don't want to be too tight. But it is tough to for a lot of guys who I've played with that, unfortunately, you know, skip out after curfew and drink a little too much Kool-Aid.

Speaker: um so it is you know I'd say wise to keep in the same regiment that you had and and not go off across the line who's the best who's the best madden player on the field well I mean I'm going to say me with my own bias expected you to say but Rodney Harrison beat me at on the jumbotron at woodlip they had us playing on the jumbotron on the 50-yard line and the PlayStation glitched and died out in the first half.

Speaker: So we had to start the second half fresh and he got away the win. Were you kicking butt though at the first time? was beating him in the half. Yeah, course I thought so. But you know he probably paid someone to pull the plug because they didn't want to lose to you. See, that that's that's the, you know, if you know Rodney Harrison, that's not far-fetched. He's a competitive advantage 110%. I just want to say p s two was the best Madden ever.

Speaker: I think 2004. 100% best ever created. But I have to here a little I heard you're best friends with Ted Johnson. How's that relationship going? Listen, guys, this is Ted Johnson's worst nightmare right now. A bunch of Instagrammers and podcasters who just wish they could make it to the radio to, you know, share their thoughts and feelings about football and their fellow fans. So I just appreciate that we have the chance to, you know, come together like the ah non-traditional media people that we are today. But I wish you well, Ted.

Back to the news, like 2003, it was a question. It was one of my favorite teams of all time. It was one of the best games in the history of history. Can you just tell me how much you've come out before we dealt with?

Speaker: up how much and most angry runner I've ever seen. I want to say like 16 touchdowns. doingling a two with like sixteen hundred thirty five rush time like that absolute monster most angry runner i just i want to say like sixteen touchdown to angry tu abouts cory gillon Corey was a beast, man. I mean, he's one of those guys that, you know, you would never like, you know, the way he carries himself is kind of like he's a chill guy. He's not like the most rigid, serious player.

Speaker: But in between those lines, man, even in like, if it was like a three-quarter speed practice, like he's stiff-arming you. you know, he's he's making everyone look silly out there. And then Rodney, you know, speaking of Rodney, he's the kind of guy that he's going test a guy like Corey early and often. I'm like, Corey put that to bed early, right? Like no one was meeting him in the hole.

Speaker: um And he, you know, Bill's biggest thing is he wanted Corey to stay in shape. So he had Corey finishing every run, like a Jerry Rice style to the end zone, every play. And so when you get Corey going at his, you know, in his best shape and coming hungry out of Cincinnati, I mean,

Speaker: We felt it all in the locker room that this team was going to probably go all the way. and say how i almost felt that last year. i was maybe one of the people who predict Super Bowl. I don't want you to pull a lat or anything. but But, yeah, I mean, you know it's it's ah certain players can shift the locker room, right? And Corey was one of them. He one of those guys. We got Randy Moss, same thing.

Speaker: Immediate temperature change when they arrive, like, oh, elite level talent is in the house. Exactly. That's that's what it is. It's like those are the kind of guys that take the air out of a room. they' They're already respected once they walk through the room. They don't have to really earn it, right?

Speaker: And then, like I talked about earlier, some players can be, you know, just good. Some players can be great, and it's how they practice, how they do things. Corey, he's my boy. Like, I didn't see it coming from him just as how he carries himself.

Speaker: But when that ball, when he's strapped up and in between those lines, totally other animal. Maybe one of Belichick's top five best reclamation projects going from like throwing his shoulder pads into the stands and in Cincinnati checking out not being the proverbial locker room cancer. I hate that phrase pariah if you will. on pick Yeah, yeah. And like they gave up legitimate capital.

Speaker: talk about adri gra Still worth it. know it was equal by value He only started coming back around the stadium a few years ago doing the alumni work. And I'd say, Corey Dillon couldn't be nicer.

Speaker: he's so appreciative of everything that's gone on with the Patriots and the fact that people see him and they just a mile wide smile and I'll tell you the one thing I've noticed from all the times being here radio whatever and all the other you know half-ass humble brags the first thing you notice pro athletes like yourself and especially the Corey Dillans and Randy Mosses they're just like they're x-men they're just like Corey Dillans hands will think they could like grab like just crush like that you know the other thing like oh you're so strong you rip a phone book like he can crush a coconut like Big, big, big, huge hands tall. And just like he's like, I don't work out anymore. Meanwhile, his shoulders were still up to his ears. Like just a huge, gentle giant. thattic game I was probably 10 years old and a woman spilled a coffee on the side. He was up to the sideline woman spilled a coffee. i don't know why she had a coffee at a game. But anyways, spill the coffee on it. It looks good. Kill like he was.

Speaker: I can almost guarantee he's a man of few words. Right. But his eyes. You get those eyes, man. Well, yeah, and and I mean, that was, ah you know, that time with that team, you talk about it being one of your favorite teams. I mean, I was still a young player at the time, and we two years in the league, but my lock my linebacker room was Mike Grable, Ted Johnson, Teddy Bruschi, William McGinnis, Roman Pfeiffer, you know, Larry Izzo, just like head coaches and assistant coaches everywhere now, right? And then just all around, you know, you got Kevin O'Connell as a backup player. Kingsbury came in my draft year.

Speaker: Just so many like leaders in that locker room. We could ask you like a thousand questions about this one. We have a couple more minutes. But first off, I just want to say first question and you can answer it quick if you want. Did you realize you were in like a historic locker room?

Speaker: Like when you're there, we like this is a crazy talent. I did. I mean, I, my first two people that I met was Anthony Pleasant and Richard Seymour coming through the locker room door.

Speaker: Logan Mankins once told me, he's like, it's very simple. You off the field, you be a gentleman. i'm a nice person. that's i don't want to I don't want to live like that. you go on the field, you just flip the switch and you become an absolute animal and you go out there and you do the best you can to take someone's head off and then you turn the keys off. Who's surprising you out there on the field? Yeah, no, I think these two days were super telling. It was a really good first day by the Patriots and a really good second day. But the Eagles certainly came out swinging today after yesterday's performance. And it was just a true test. I don't like to say there are winners and losers of joint practices. because I genuinely don't think that's the point of these.

Speaker: The point is you go in, you make mistakes, you have some really good things and you just learn. so when September 9th comes around, you're not making those mistakes against Seattle. And i I can truly say it does seem like they did that.

Speaker: um As surprising, at I'm not as surprised, but i think a lot of people are surprised by Demario Douglas, you know, i have been I am not surprised by that. i am star is li he's about How many guys I got it? I hate Sophie. How many three seasons in a row guys have we all taken the cheese and said,

Speaker: I think this is the year Pop breaks out. Like, it's like probably the year for 1,100. This is different. This is different. This is the year Pop breaks out. This is different. This is the year he breaks out, though, Fitz. I'm there, though. Hey, you heard it here first, guys. Time's here. You heard it here first for the past four years. This is different. The way he's looking in camp, one, it's the confidence. Two, it's his connection with Drake May. That, to me, is just stood out. A.J. Brown. It's A.J. Brown. I mean, you have that one-handed catch against Quinion Mitchell in the end zone today that even though the refs rolled out, I'm not saying, you know. To start the day. I'm pretty sure that was a – Ref was on the Eagles take anyway. Dirty first. I'm pretty sure that looked more like it was in. But, you know, as my boyfriend said, VAR.

Speaker: But literally I get the text. I'm like, VAR. But, you know, he's won. on defense, I mean, if you can't go wrong with a defensive line.

Speaker: um I think that the safety group, Craig Woodson, um always impresses. But of course, going shout out the guy who had two interceptions, including a pickic what would have been a pick six today, Marcus Jones. how you not you guy that's signed right The guy that signed versus the guy that's unsigned. Exactly. I mean, Marcus Jones is just, he's unreal. And I think...

Speaker: He's always been able to produce at this level. And I just think that in this bravo led defense, the Saffer defense, Terrell Williams defense, we're looking at Marcus Jones, who knows what his true role is. And they're not trying to move him around. They're not trying to have him play deep corner either. They have him more in that slot role. And it's working. It is working. I've seen him at safety the past two days. I've seen him actually drop back to a deep safety, and what I've noticed it is being in the red zone, which is interesting because where did Marcus Jones lose continuously last year? was the red zone. that He was able to be taken advantage of, so it was interesting when they get down to the red zone. They were putting him deep in the safety position. So maybe –

Speaker: some rotations from Marcus Jones this year with his new contract captain, bigger role on the team. Maybe you little bit and that, that kind of makes sense. Him playing center field. Drake London ate a lot of lunch that day yeah at the Marcus Jones cafe. That said, honestly, he's a throwback Patriot in so much as I don't think there's anyone who will gladly like Jerry take the coaching or be told like, go play outside, go play slot, go play safety, do kickoffs, return punts, play wide receiver. Like he's a throwback. Yes, sir. And you know,

Speaker: happy to do a type of utilitarian patron. Yep, for sure. And I, you know, my relationship with you guys is based entirely on honesty and physical attractiveness. And um'm I will be honest and say i was down on Marcus Jones and I have a friend who was very high on him. This is hiss this time last year. And I told him, like, I don't, I don't see it. Like he's a big effort guy, but he's just, you can't teach height. And too many times he'd be in position and a guy who put the ball off the top of his helmet, like, Like, you know, the ah Uncle Jim, like, pulling the quarter out behind the three-year-old's ear or whatever. And he just proved me wrong time and time again. And thank God they gave him that contract. And he's going to be under.

Speaker: Sweetheart, three for 36 seems like a steal at this point, right? 100%. I mean, considering what contracts are, I just think it's also a team guy at the end of the day. Like, um it's not a guy who was kind of looking to break the bank. It was a guy that wants to win. And it kind of reminds me of like the old Patriots in a lot of ways of like, you know, some guy's willing to take those pay cuts not willing to go and break the bank at another team just to get the money.

I actually got to come last week. I saw last week. And it was awesome just kind of watching the boys get after it.

Speaker: Drake looks so smooth and poised, you what mean? And then with all these new weapons that he's got, um I think he's got a a good path to, you know, get us, you know, double-digit wins again and and maybe even go ahead and snatch that MVP. So you're on the Patriots in 2010, right? Yeah. And so in 2010, how do you feel like just generally the talent level, which I know the talent level it this year feels a little bit – No doubt. Stepped up a little bit. yeah yeah but so this is what you gotta understand 2010 yeah that was different right you're talking about like all-star type talent right so that was the year that kronk and hernandez were both drafted mccourney giving spikes if you guys remember spikes um and then you got wes wilker right kevin falk

Speaker: Wilford obviously Tom right and then and then and then you get you get like uh you know random like a Danny Woodhead that shows up yeah you know what I'm saying yeah exactly great beast and then uh and then not to mention obviously Edelman was a second year guy right yeah Algie Crumpler I mean just names after names after names Randy Moss I mean come on yeah So this was just, I was coming from the 49ers at the time, you know, we were at best 500, you know, so coming here, winning organization as it was, I learned that it was actually like a player ran team. So when I was out in San Francisco, the coaches ran the meetings. When I got here, Randy Moss had the clicker, you know what mean? He was, he was holding it down. it was just a completely different dynamic, but it also brought the business atmosphere to being in the NFL. And I was a young guy out in San Fran trying to party as much as I could.

Speaker: then when I came here, man, dude, this is, this is business. You know what and i And I admire that, you know, about how Bill established that here and how Tom and and ah and all the, you know, older guys, you know, kept it going.

Speaker: So it really gave me i can just step in and just get in where i fit in. And that's exactly what happened, you know. So it was it was a great time here. bill let the players run the meeting he did dude he did bill didn't want have his control have so so you would he would open up he would open up with the team yeah okay and he would kind of go over you know kind of the the theme of the week um maybe even show some plays where people were bullshittting yeah he would do that he's super sarcastic did he really like to call tomo a bunch of it was like calling the best players out all the time he he didn't have any parameters so it was tomo whoever it wasn't like no matter it was just him it was whoever

Speaker: um But, you know, he would also, you know, let you know when you did good. You know what I mean? so he was, in my opinion, he's like a wizard. You know, a lot of people, obviously his name's been tarnished, you know, with things that have happened recently in the media. But he's still a legend, you know, no matter what.

Speaker: Can't take those wins, those Super Bowls away. And honestly, if he gets a winning season in NC right now, everyone's going to jump on the bandwagon. He didn't have a recruiting class. He had no shot last year. Nothing. I think he needs to bring in – needs bring in older guys like Indiana did, right? Get some older guys, mature guys that can actually buy into a system, and I think he'll have immediate success. But he needs to be over 500 in order for him to long his leash. His leash is going get short. Especially everything that's going on down there. You know what I'm saying? So he's got to go ahead and get a winning season. But if he does that, I think he's on the track to maybe turn that thing around. coming back to the NFL?

Speaker: You know what? I think he's proven everything he needs to here. I think he's just trying to show that he can they can transform a program. And UNC's got a great brand, but as a return of football, he's been on a low end.

Speaker: So I think if he can transform that, I think he'll feel fulfilled. know what I mean? But he's done enough. Like, on now. what what does he was he need what do you What do you think that Vrabel brings to the football team that Belichick did?

Speaker: I mean, look, he played, okay? And not only did he play, he was a baller, was a beast. So he bring that element, so he's instantly believable. Now, what Belichick established made him believable. Like, when I got here, he already had three Super Bowls, so going to buy into the system. This is no-brainer.

Speaker: But with Vrabel, you know, not only, you know, was he, you know, what does he have a good philosophy, He also played, right? He has rings that he he holds himself. So he's easy to buy into because he's he's done it.

Speaker: And you see his energy with the guys. Like he he has that rapport with them. Like they gravitate towards him. Like how many guys do you know could come in as a first-year head coach at ah at an organization and take them all the fucking way?

Speaker: Okay? okay Like, that doesn't happen, right? So you you have to pay homage to what he's been able to accomplish. And, you know, you look at a guy like Mayo, who I played with. We both came out of Virginia as, a you know, high school talents. um So I know him very well.

Speaker: um And to kind of see the the stark contrast between the two, I mean, you've got to tip your head off to Raybo for that, man. I mean, he he came in here and he did it, you know?

Speaker: passro for a minute so how do you feel about first of all give me a thoughts some practice today lot know your Yeah, I mean, I saw I mean, obviously everyone saw the the first pass of the day go to AJ Brown. He was in, by the way, cameras right there. He was in, by the way. and I don't want to hear anyone say anything differently.

Speaker: um But I just I noticed that the offensive line of the Patriots the the first team gut beat today. And I think it was a more even practice than the one-sided affair that we had yesterday where the Patriots were kind of, I'll say dominant through all of the bases. We won yesterday. Yeah, we won. not yeah win the days No, we we definitely won the day yesterday, and I count it. you know It's just because i you know I'm a fat-sweaty nerd in my mom's basement, almost. um But so I look at it as, okay, today was like the true test. Everyone brought their A game.

Speaker: The Patriots still, I think, had a leg up, but I think it was more more back and forth, which which it should be. That's what you want. and That's the kind of quality of reps that you want, especially in the second of two joint practices.

Speaker: like What the hell Randy Moss like? Honestly, man, honestly, Randy was the coldest dude, right? Like, I sat next to him on the plane, so I got to, like, talk to him, like, talk to him. And super personable. You know, with with with what we would call country as shit yeah is what we would call it. But, man, had stories for days.

Speaker: like, a real team dude. Like, when I came here, know, it's just, like, we had maybe, like, six or seven minutes. Loaded. So every rep for me, like, it needed to count. And so I'm... I mean, I never asked him to do but he would always run my runs over and over and over and say, good run, good run. Like, he didn't have to do that yet. That's what I'm saying. But he would because was promoting me because a good relationship. were talking on the plans. He got to know me and he's like, yo, you're falling. So he would make it known whenever I made plans. So I'm very appreciative of that. And he goes down to history as obviously one of the best all the time. But a lot of people don't realize how good of person he is and I can speak to him.

Speaker: Yeah, so let me ask you a question here. Were you ever on the low lights with Bill in the main practice? I'm sorry to put you on the spot. That's fair enough. That's fair enough. That's fair enough. But truth be told, because I was scrapping for every touch I could get, it was very rare that I would have a bad play. You know what I mean? I'm scrapping to get on. So rarely did I have a bad play. In most cases, Bill would say, good run time. You know what I mean? So he would actually give me love, which I felt like at that point was necessary for me in my development. So my experience was fucking awesome. You know what mean? And the reason why I'm here, I'm not I'm not from New England, but I've remained in New England since playing here. That's awesome. So, boys, I actually want to pose a question for you. If you had to pick a player, not Gonzo, overall of camp throughout the last three weeks, you can't pick Gonzo, you can't pick Drake. are you picking?

Speaker: can't pick AJ Brown either no so who you think Marcus Jones and there's me another name that you can possibly say let me take you seriously back to back pick sixes on Jalen Hurts in joint practice that because Jalen Hurts barth had a good point right he said it's about stacking days and I agree with him stacking days but when it comes to joint practice that's like a measuring stick day right to see if you stack those days and do they translate against somebody else Marcus Jones has absolutely balled out if i'm going to pick one name that's not the superstars it's Marcus Jones and Maybe he just becomes a superstar. I think he is a superstar.

Speaker: He's a superstar returner. He's a superstar slot cornerback. I think he's a bona fide superstar. art Wouldn't that be nice? think that the name that's probably more quiet is Romeo Dobbs. So to me, and Fitzy kind of touched on this, with A.J. Brown in the house, you have Romeo Dobbs coming in. And now this system is notoriously hard to to learn, right? These receivers come in, they bomb out. It doesn't matter who you are. It it doesn't always work out.

Speaker: Matt Collins did it. Obviously, had some familiarity with Josh McDaniels. But Romeo Dobbs is coming in right now, and he's looking like he's going to have an amazing year. So, like, to me, I get it. Like, Marcus Jones, 100%. He's eating Jalen Hurts' lunch all day long.

Speaker: But when it comes down to who's going to be a real impact player for us, I think Romeo Dobbs, and especially in the red zone, like that guy is a tough cover and he's got strong hands. And obviously, AJ Brown is is showing us that he's showing us that 10 times over.

Speaker: But when it comes to that specific skill set that we need, Romeo Dobbs to me is is showing me what he can do. So I just want to ask one more question here. Since obviously you played well with Greenville.

Speaker: So I want to know like is AJ Brown being here now? This is the next, you're Gronk. Sure. The best procedure say this for Greenville. Just in terms of like, ability, aura, presence.

Speaker: Like you line up, I go on this one, you line up with AJ Brown. That's fucking AJ Brown. Yeah. Respect. We're not fucking around. Yeah, yeah. Respect. You know what I mean? So, um, what would say to you, right? Right. Yeah, no, no, no, it's good. It's good. So it's all about presence. You know what mean? when you When you talk about lining up, it's the presence, right? So when you talk about Randy, it's the presence of Randy. So I feel like AJ, he brings that. yeah Um, and so what that does that opens up doors for other players. So not only how impactful can you be, but how impactful can you be for your offense so other guys can eat?

Speaker: And I feel like ah feel like he's going to bring that. So i do I think he is apple for apples comparison to Randy? I think that would be a stretch at this point. Right. But in terms of presence, 100 percent. No question. I just have one question for you. And I think, you know, we're going to be a card off and, you know, shovel with the edge. um So obviously you're familiar with like the Earhart Perkins style of offense that they've been running here for the last 25 years. Josh is a a special design this specialist in it.

Speaker: What would you say is like the hardest part in terms of like the run game? Is it the blocking scheme? Like what what's the hardest thing? to like that' agree That's a great question. So a lot of times it's audibles, right? So remember when we played, we would come up to the minus three different plays. And based on what we saw the defense giving us would determine how we ran that play. So the snap count itself would actually have to be broken into it.

Speaker: So you would have to listen. So you would not only have to know what you had to do on three different plays, but you also need to know if there was a play to come in and how to react to that. So I would say for a young back, 100% which pick up, you know where to be is the number one thing. and then three is knowing kind of the philosophy of the offense all right if you don't necessarily know the play need to know where you need to be it's like spacing right if you got someone doing important you might need to do a play and it has to just line up properly so would say for young guy knowing where to be obviously let's pick up all the things there and then just listening especially during camp right now bring it all in get it and then ask a guy if don't know but um

Speaker: But I would say, we're just kind of about backs, I think Henderson's one of the most explosive. That's where I was going with it. One of the most explosive young backs. I probably jumped out my chair when I started picking him up. And I watched him college, and I saw what he could bring. And we all saw that in his opening kickoff in the preseason game. Oh, yeah. How it's nice. Right? And then seeing him waking up over through the course of the year, last year, you can see that clash. I think he's poised for big year. I love how he and Andre balance each other. I think we've got one of the most post-opied kids in the league. You talked about picking up the blitz in pass pro. That was Henderson's folly. You were at camp a week ago. you seeing anything out of Henderson in the pass protection?

Speaker: I saw him go up in college. That was the strength of his in college. We were watching his college tape saying, we have a guy who's going to be able to pick up the blitz. It was absolutely. But the thing is, he's thinking at that point, he's not thinking he's been just playing.

Speaker: So he was just having fun out there. It's like the Sandline. Take that hat off. That's the benefit to the end too. And he got a year on his belt. He knows how it goes. Of course. And he also needs a million. He also got an understanding of how people respect his game and how he fits it.

Speaker: So he's got a better understanding too. He's coming to make it last year. He didn't know shit. But now he knows. And so I think, like I said, he's poised for an explosion. Straight explosion. I always feel like rookies have to prepare for the draft and the combine and all that stuff. But their second year, they're relaxed. They're playing with their guys. They're going out to some field in Montana. He was successful last year. Let's not forget that. He had an amazing rookie year. That's what I mean. But we were able to see what he needed to work on. So if he was to work on those things, plus do what he did last year. We already know that good stickup is already in his system.

Speaker: We already know he knows. He didn can't forget it. It's just that when you're thinking and the fastest things moving the league, there is no thinking. I know I'm the optimist on our show, and our show is more optimistic than certainly two to sixes, no doubt, but they look good these last two days. And the wide receivers, I was talking with Alex Barth as I was walking out. It feels like Dobbs over the last week has really made sort of a leap as well. And then a j Brown is A.J. Brown. And so, i mean, you have reason to be excited right now if you're a Patriots fan, for sure. Do we think we saw a better day out of Dobbs today because it was red zone day and Dobbs is an absolute goal line. he, all of his touchdowns, most of his touchdowns last year came from within the five yard line. It's a great call. Yeah, absolutely. And Zoe mentioned it as well. It felt like he was comfortable in the red zone today, too. He's also, I mean, this is, again, do a little research, Tim, fair enough. But he's a he's a lot bigger than what you think it's going to be the first time you see. So he's a big dude. When we signed him, I thought he was small yes for some reason. I did, too. and He's a guardian. Yeah, right? He's not. He's a big guy. And so, again, him with A.J. Brown, like I just look at the leap of the offense I expect to make this year.

Speaker: I think it's monumental. I think it's going to be 90-day what we saw last year. One of the things I don't think people understand is second year in the same system for Drake May with Josh McDaniels and then the upgraded weapons, A.J. Brown, the attention that he brings, right? We saw it. mean, he's the superstar of the camp. Let's face it.

Speaker: And then you have, like you said, these rome Romeo Dobbs, these other guys. it's justs It's just going to elevate their game. but I mean, what's what's the ceiling for us this year? I mean, look, year two in the system, like you said with Josh McDaniels, you know the Mac Jones transition from Josh McDaniels to Matt Patricia didn't work out great. I don't know if you guys picked up on that or not. So I do think some continuity there with it with the offensive coordinator is going to be a huge, huge difference.

Speaker: And I just, thought I'm a huge believer in Drake Knight, too. I think he's an absolute stud. So you pair him with the receivers they have, the same offensive coordinator. I think you're looking at one of the best offenses football. i really do. I believe it.

Speaker: I have two names that I want to throw out there and just hear your thoughts on. Don't pull a Barth on me. Make to make sure these are like blockbuster names and not some like 89th or 90th guy on on the roster. I do appreciate Barth's attention to hang time and all that. That is right up my alley. But these two names, I think you'll know both of these names. I'll start off with the undrafted rookie, Khalil Jacobs.

Speaker: I feel like Khalil Jacobs has an a legitimate shot, at least to to flirt with making this roster. He does have two veterans in front of him, a Muma and Britt. But what have you seen from Khalil Jacobs? Does he have a roster shot don't know. Muma hasn't exactly played well so far throughout camp, too. So I think that's certainly something keep an on when we talk about how this roster is going to shake out. I think we're certainly expecting a little bit more from him. It really hasn't happened yet. So, yeah, I think that's so good. The second name is K. Ron Pronte, draft pick, cornerback. And they have a depth battle, I would say, going on at cornerback right now. We saw Woods take a lot of the snaps in Gonzo's absence. We didn't see that today. We saw Vildor take those snaps. Do you think K. Ron Pronte has a chance of sneaking into this roster? Part of me feels like you were listening in on me and Barth's conversation. Absolutely not. Because we were talking about the cornerback depth as well being sort of one of the questions for me throughout this whole roster is as talented as they are, what's the depth like if there some things? and corners certainly one of those spots you have questions about. So yeah, I think you can make an impact there. It could be a difference for sure.

Speaker: Let me bring in a name that people might be like even more familiar with than like Frunty or something. Let's bring up Christian Gonzalez because think we've been through, how long have we been doing this for now? Maybe an hour? We haven't mentioned the name of Christian Gonzalez at any point during this time. So how are you feeling about the contract situation? Is this like, my theory again, you're like, yeah, he did get injured, but he's using this as like a mini holdout right now to like negotiate, obviously. so i feel like the status contract is going I think you nailed it. I think, yes, yeah he might have gotten dinged up during that practice, but you're not going to rush back from that injury right now if you still have contract concerns. So I think that that's absolutely kind of what's going on. I would have thought the Witherspoon thing would have made this a little bit easier. i'm I'm a little bit surprised, to be honest, that we're this far in the week and we haven't seen even a report about this thing kind of coming together or starting to come together. That that makes me a little bit nervous, but I have to imagine with the bar being set the way that it is, with that agent being involved with those Witherspoon too, i think I don't think there's an unreasonable ask from the Gonzalez camp because I think if you're that agent and you go negotiate a deal for Christian Gonzalez that blows the Witherspoon deal out of the water, isn't Witherspoon then turning around to the agent and saying, how the hell did you not get me that deal? So I don't think it's an unreasonable to ask on the Gonzalez side.

Speaker: I would have thought that this would have gotten done by now or would have gotten a little bit more movement. I heard some criticism earlier. Pat Thoreau was talking about it the offensive line today. It seemed like it was a little sluggish. and some of these Some of these plays, you know players are are pulling back and they're holding off cause they're about to hit Drake May. What do you think about the offensive line? I think Will Campbell's had a really good camp so far. just to tell people who are watching a little bit more closely than we were, obviously, because we're doing the show, it sounds like Will Campbell didn't have a...

Speaker: ah the day that he's had in the past, but still an effective day. And I think that's what you're looking for. I hope if he's a ah top 15 tackle, a left tackle in the league, I think you're doing all right. And then Eric Tucker can stay healthy throughout the season, think the offensive line is going to be can be much improved. Yeah, so, mean, obviously, LeBell Campbell,

Speaker: yeah so i mean obviously like go campbell there's There's always a lot of like dialogue around Will Campbell. Just a bit. I don't know why everyone needs to freak out about Will Campbell. He's had a great camp. But again, like it's always like the problem when he gets against bigger competition. Like against Miles Garrett. And he's in a postseason after his injury. yes you know like He hasn't held up his entire competition. I don't know. Is there any doubts here about any of this? Yes, absolutely. Yeah, yeah. yes yeah

Speaker: I got to see it. oh Yes, exactly. No, yes, I have to see it. I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful. I do think the injury was a huge part of that. I think Drake May and Will Campbell both being banged up in the postseason sort of led to, I'm not saying Seattle wasn't the other team they were, but I think that's showing.

Speaker: in large part was because both of those guys were hurt so i do expect a much better will campbell i just truthfully i don't know what that ceiling looks like for him i have to see it in the regular season how can we not say the injury was a major part of it and if you fail against miles garrett i don't know if i'm going to beat you about that too much let me bring this up really quick because this drives me crazy i've been was in the postseason. He was fucking injured.

Speaker: They shouldn't have played him. They shouldn't have played him. Campbell was injured. Campbell was injured. He was not right. No, he's not an injury. He's not right. Couldn't have played himself. Wouldn't they have not been better off to play very low throughout the postseason? That's a real second guess. I'm not saying Vidarian Lowe is Jonathan Ogden or the Orlando Pace by any stretch, but and you also did not get exposed in those games that Will Campbell missed towards the end of the season. So, no, I think that's a fair second yeah I was saying on the podcast before the Super Bowl, I said, is this crazy talk or is Vidarian Lowe and Ben Brown a better starting left side of line? And honestly, it wasn't crazy. No, it wasn't crazy. No, you're right. You're right.

Speaker: least in the second half. That's what I was most surprised about is like you saw enough, hadn't you? Like when when do you and then never to make the switch and then to hear after the Super Bowl that the amount of rehab that Campbell had to do. Well, if you're rehabbing that hard, you must have been hurt during the Super Bowl. Your coach had to know it. So we'll beat players up for not playing hurt.

Speaker: So are we going to beat a player up for playing hurt? No, but I think I want to bring it to the coach. Coach, why did you play? It's a brutal spot to put your rookie on that stage, by the way, knowing that he's not 100% to kind of get teed off on the way that he did. And then I'm just from like a mental perspective too. I'm mentally soft, so I'm probably little bit different than an NFL player is. But like that would rattle me to get exposed the way that he did in large part because of that injury. He was rattled.

Speaker: Yes. He did. He dodged right out of there for the Super Bowl. He eventually spoke to the media, but he didn't want to talk about it. yeah

Speaker: I mean, I think as far as watching A.J. Brown, we talked about A.J. Brown obviously a lot, like the amount of juice he brings to practice, juice to the wide receiver room, like how palatable is it for you to notice him throughout camp even? It's real. I mean, like last year with Stephon Diggs, you noticed a difference. And again, that's a low bar. We're talking about like K.J. Osborne and the wide receiver core that you had two years before that, right? But with Stephon Diggs, you noticed the difference last year. And I feel like this year with A.J. Brown, Dobbs, and just – The depth at wide receiver right now, that whole group looks completely different. They've done an unbelievable job in terms of remaking that run to where they are right now.

Speaker: from Toto 24 in the Mayo season. That's what I'm saying. I think we looked back. it was I think it was KJ Osborne, Pope, Baker. Was Tyquan Ford still there? I think he might have been, right? Yeah.

Speaker: um The defense as a whole, um just being as aggressive as they were today definitely got me extremely giddy. um And then um Romeo Dobbs, man, I thought he was a phenomenal addition. And seeing him as a true two, coming from a jam-packed wide receiver room, finally being able to showcase his talents.

Speaker: And it was evident today last season he had six touchdowns all in the red zone. And he was dominating today in the red zone. So yeah definitely exciting. Low light, um I didn't really have one. I mean, obviously I didn't the i saw Drake Mays interception all way to to re So the one where AJ Brown tried to one hand it through the ball up into the air picked off, not putting that on Drake, man, but maybe that on an AJ Brown. So that's a different that's a different perspective on it. What's your perspective? um I would say. yeah And I'm a Drake May lover, obviously. But kind of telegraphed the past a little bit in my eyes.

Speaker: He just – I think him and AJ are going to find that rhythm. i'm I've got a draft strategy coming on. So, everybody in the league, if watching right now – Savage just stole my water. Did anybody see that? I kind of walked that water right in front of me. He just takes my other water. He doesn't have water over here. He doesn't have that one, though. Sorry. Continue. We're good. Speaker: And yeah, AJ Brown stood up to me today because the catch he had in the end zone. Just the way Drake may lead the offense, the way he's like coming up from year. I don't even count the first year for Drake. I count last year as year one because the first year was such a shit show.

Speaker: Sorry, Gerard Mayo, but such a shit show here. Drake last year commanded the offense, but the way he's leading everybody, he's like, they call Grable leader of men.

Speaker: Drake is a leader of men now. It's going to be nothing this year. I'm telling you The Patriots are going to be very, very good. 13-14 win team. That was going to be my next question. Win prediction, 13-14. 13-14. We did a show a couple weeks ago um doing the whole schedule when it came out.

Speaker: I had fourteen and three just a wash last year. You had So I went 12 and I'm usually the guy that's usually too rose colored. So I'm actually and here's the thing, right? I'm with you guys. I look at the schedule and I look at the teams and I say, did this team get better or did it get it worse? So much better. And i I look at the Patriots and I say, we got a lot better. And I look at the other teams and i and a lot of times I say they got worse right through the draft, through they lost, yeah through a lot of different reasons. But.

Speaker: Like, look at week one, right? I've never been this confident heading into a week one against a Seahawks team. That's for sure. and Granted, last year, right, we came out cold. We came out cold against Oakland. We came out cold against the Steelers.

Speaker: And those are games we should have won, right? But I just feel like this team with a chip on their shoulder from the Super Bowl, Drake May, Will Campbell, lot of people with a lot of things to prove against the team that you played last year that got worse. Yeah.

Speaker: I just i don't see it. I don't see how they lose that game. And that's going to set the tone for the season, guys. I agree. There's a lot of trap games in the season, I feel. But I think if the Patriots can overcome them, if they're slogs or if they're know if they're tough games but they do end up on top, it's just going to be like last year. I mean, just rolling. Everybody's just like – The Patriots lovers are are getting that high again and the Patriots haters are like, yeah so they getting away with this like so what where I mean, i'm I'm excited for the season.

Speaker: I'm at 11 wins right now, which is still the over. It's respectable. It's still respectable. I think this team is a better team. I don't think there's any debate about that. This team's more experienced. They're going to their second year with the coaching staff and they just have better players flat out. they're gonna have a worse record by three wins which is fine more with maybe i'll take the 11 wins yeah this is a much harder schedule the team now has a target on their back the other teams know who drake may is and what he's capable of to your point the rookie year is a wash i bet the other teams looked at the film probably felt somewhat similar right like are they going to do the gerard mayo stuff or are they going to come out here and look like a league team. So I just feel like last year was really like the first year.

Speaker: That's right. This is the second year. yeah That's how I look at it. I think we definitely got better. But when you win that many games, you go the Super Bowl, you have a much harder schedule. My question to you is what game on the schedule stands out to you? Like, ah that might be a loss. You know what? the I think the random loss I'm circling is the Vikings Thursday night game. a homan off the sunday our one Coming off a Sunday night Bill's game, there's an opportunity for a left down there. Brian Flores,

Speaker: Nasty poke on defense. He's a He's absolute savage. We know him all too well, having moved right? So I think the Vikings game, because you could say Bills, you could say Broncos, those are too easy. The Vikings game is the one where you're like... You have to respect Flores. They're the opposite of the Seahawks, right? like The Seahawks is like, we're going to be vanilla and we're going to beat you no matter of what. we know We're not going to trick you. We're doing this thing. and we We're rushing for and we're going to.

Speaker: Brian Flores is the exact opposite. Brian Flores is like, you're not going to what the fuck. So to me, I agree. I think that could be a trap game. I'm not a Kyler Murray guy. I'm not a believer. If he's even the quarterback. So either way, I have no confidence in Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy coming in. this place on a Thursday night with the lights on in December and walking out here with a duck. I think Kyla Murray has little bit more, I think, better chance than JJ McCarthy, certainly. He would, but I mean, I don't believe in... He's running with Jefferson, but like, Yeah, I agree, though. I think they screwed up when they let, you know, Darnold. I mean, that was a massive error on their GM. And now they're using, they're putting all their investment in Kyler Murray, who has motivation from a picture he took when he was six years old. Hopefully Call of Duty doesn't come up that way. You're the same size. The new con. Actually, you know what? The new con comes out in, like, November, usually, Veterans Day. Just don't let it be that week. Just don't let it be that week.

Speaker: yeah and I find the Patriots-Seahawks game to start the season, it's almost like, to me, that's like a trap game for the Seahawks. Like, I think that's like a Seahawks trap, not a pass trap. You know what I mean Like, think it's all day Seahawks trap. I see it differently. So the defense usually ready before the offense is ready.

Speaker: And what do they have? They have prolific defense. It might be the best defense in the entire league. Our offense hasn't been tackled yet. their defense is going to come out ready to play week one so i'm a little scared i think it's more of a trap game for us because our offense isn't going to be ready as ready as an offense is when they're hitting their stride where the defense can come out week one that's fair flying so i think if anything maybe you want to take like eagles for sorry uh seattle first half right because like the first the first half might be all seattle and then maybe the second half is more patriots but we will see It's also the first Super Bowl rematch in some years. In forever. A Wednesday game. Denver, Carolina. A lot of anticipation building up for it.

We've been at camp the past couple of days. We have a lot of takeaways, actually. All right. Well, list them off. What's your main takeaway? Well,

Speaker: I want to go a little bit about Eagles fans if if you guys don't mind. There's a group of Patriots fans mind if you want to talk about. No, no, we don't have at it.

Speaker: First off, so I thank Savage Boston, LFG but Pats Pod guys and and and fanatics for having us. But Eagles fans, what's with all of them having accessories? They're all Mr. Accessory. I love it. We we have like Transformers guy. One guy's wearing the helmet. But the the cool thing about Eagles fans is they like all organically come to the same conclusion and we saw that on Twitter. So at both days,

Speaker: we would see something live right and immediately we would tweet about it so the eagles would come out and they got booed horrendously and it was great and we would just tweet eagles came out got booed and eagles fans would come on there like actually no that didn't happen it's it's actually very very actually fake news yeah it was fake and we're like well actually it's just it's not even a bad thing aj brown made like a great a crazy play between two defenders yesterday And I think Bryson actually tweeted it out and somebody immediately under that tweet said that actually didn't happen. And it's like Eagles fans are living in a different world, but they just defend the heck out of their team, which is kind of fun. And Eagles fans are gaslighters. Is that what you're basically saying? I would say so. Yeah, definitely.

Speaker: Definitely. And, you know, like. you know To your point about what were your biggest takeaways from camp, I think what's pretty obvious is you know outside of the degeneracy that is Philadelphia and their fans. um What's pretty obvious to me and I think the rest of the Patriot fans watching these practices is we're looking at a perennial top three offense.

Speaker: like the way that may and brown are able to connect on really any situation it's been you've seen it from midfield you've seen it from the high red zone you know in inside of the five yard line their ability to connect at the highest stakes in these situations third down doesn't matter the distance doesn't matter the pressure it's been That's been the biggest takeaway from camp.

Speaker: And then on you know kind of a negative side of things. with forgot We some Eagles juice now. We got Eagles juice.

Brown?

Speaker: We gained Jalen Brown, so we're good with that. lost We lost a a a terrible Brown and gained a great Brown. What makes him so terrible? let us Let us know what we're getting with our wide, like an honest, honest question, right? two thousand yard yeah You're gonna get absolutely getting start.

Speaker: so in the beginning you're go to We're going have a great buy-in from him. going to be all smiles. He's going to be all good. But make sure you keep it good. Because if it goes south a little bit, and we go with a lot of you receivers over the year, Keough, he won bunch years ago. ah If it goes south, it goes south quick. So he didn't make you a cornerback, so pretty bad the last couple of weeks. I'm just going to say that. At the end of the day, A.J. Brown is a top five receiver in NFL, right?

Speaker: But the problem is you've got to keep feeding him, make him happy. If you don't make him happy, he'll be in the same situation we're in. Let me ask you this question. So i was sitting next to – there's lots of Eagles fans here You guys definitely showed up. Sitting next to one, and I'm going, oh, A.J. Brown, A.J. Brown. He's like, yeah, just wait until week 10 when he's upset, though.

Speaker: And I said, I think Eagles fans are praying for that. Like, you guys need him to fail in week 10. You guys need him to cause a problem in our locker room. Hold on, hold on, let me finish the thing. Because if he doesn't, if he just comes here and is super happy and cooks, you guys are going to be so upset. I feel like you guys will be in your feelings about it. It's Super Bowl.

Speaker: so you guys So you guys are okay. So you guys are like, hey, listen, it was just it was just his time. It was just his time. we work first You got to remember at the end of the what is this? It's a business, right? Yeah. These are employees of a company. So hopefully he does what he does and you get a thousand some yards and So do you guys like the first-round draft pick? Is that a fair trade for a disgruntled wide receiver in your opinion? I don't think you replaced A.J. Brown, right? but you you didn't But you replaced the drama. Yeah. There's a lot of drama for the last two years. It wasn't just one year.

Speaker: It was like a three-year, two-year drama, and he's just a baby, bro. You're going to see it. I know threw up a Patriots fan. What's the wage? What's the wage? I got a question here. I got a question. So I'm a believer that Jalen Hurts is not – He's not good. He's not good. Right. good about that super bowl appearance by your quarter I'm with you. Hey, I'm with you. he He had a tough, he had a rough one. Right.

Speaker: But is Jalen hurts more than a one read quarterback? Is he? Oh, the deposit! Is he? Is he? The subtle pause. Oh, so like there's five people can get the ball. We understand that, but we also understand there's different types of quarterbacks, right? So there's some that are just arm threat, there's some that are leg threat. I mean, if you look at the first X amount of years of Peyton Manning's career, the first same X amount years of Jalen Hurts' career, you have the same amount of offensive production. One done with his legs, one done with his arm. There's many ways to get it done.

You guys were running this guy out of town before the season even started last year. And he had the most amazing. That's just wildly untrue. Nobody thought Drake. It was a collective like stroking Drake May is all that we did. Completely wrong. Because you guys are two guys in the NFL podcast. But the casuals. That belongs in the absolute freezer. Running this guy out of the freezer that takes.

Speaker: Like, nobody said that, I can tell you. we really are Zero people. We want to make it very clear. Yesterday's practice, you guys kicked our asses up and down that field. We had a completely stacked roster and then Hurts was able to flourish with a stacked roster versus Drake May. This is why he should have been MVP in my opinion. He had to carry this team.

Main Patriots takeaway from camp today.

Speaker: camp Camp was an up and down affair. We won some, we lost some. I saw a couple of ah skirmishes going on. You like to get it chippy. I saw us being the ah you know instigator of some of that chippiness.

Speaker: So I like to see that. I love to see no punches being flown around. So you can get chippy without getting going over the line. So I like to see that.

Speaker: um They got a be the the better of us a couple times, a couple of picks that we didn't really like. um But overall, it was a pretty good day for the offense and the defense.

Speaker: um I was pretty happy with it. I liked what I saw today. Danny, same question. Main takeaways for camp. My biggest thing is the physicality, right? Biggest thing, I think the Pats got overran by last year.

Speaker: The defense is at what physical is against us. The Pats throwing first punch, you know, stepping up, you know, Marmore in the middle of it, Ockes in the middle of it, Charles Woods throwing hands with Wayne Johnson today. The physicality is this team is ready to go.

Speaker: And there's a different, I mean, we said it the day one, right? so The air in Gillette is different this year. There's something to prove. For some reason, the team that was in the Super Bowl last year, underdog, and I absolutely don't understand it. So they they are ready to go. And we're talking week two preseason, and they're throwing punches against the Eagles? Love that, and I'm so happy. I don't have, other than A.J. Brown lighting it up, I have no one person to look forward this year. except the whole team because this is going be a year. We talked about this in the draft today.

Speaker: won both Super Bowl balls, this dude. he won both superbo balls and sts But you're right, though, Danny, the anticipation is nuts. And so one of the things I anticipated this year was that Pop Douglas would be the starting wide receiver on this team. Something that you predicted this year is that he would not be a player on this team. Let's talk about it. I think I said odd man out.

Speaker: And I'm going to stretch it to you said he was an absolute cut and failure. Yes. You know the Roger Goodell clown face? I'm wearing that because he has proven me so wrong. We've said it over and over again the last, what, three years but he could just be another camp hero. You could still be right. Hold on to your take. Something is different, though, this year about him.

Speaker: Something's different about this team. Every single person on this team is acting like they're going to get cut. We're talking from the top of the Did you hear Tully say that? he said he said He said everybody that comes to training camp feels like they're getting to get cut all the way to the quarterback. It's the most amazing thing that I've seen in a team in a very long time. And we're talking early Belichick days, early Tom Brady days. This team is out here to win. They're out here to beat the shit out of people. And that's my favorite thing about this team this year is that they have something to prove and they're coming off of Super Bowl.

Speaker: Which is a Super Bowl loss, they're coming off of it, which is... Amazing. What I would say about Pop Douglas is that he's been in the starting lineup. since OTAs.

Speaker: So even though he had a bad snap share last year, they seem to be going way out of their way to make sure that's not the same thing.

Speaker: they're He's in the starting lineup. He's been the starting slot receiver this whole entire time. and I don't see that changing. They got Antonio Brown at the X. They got Dobbs at the Z. They got Pop Douglas. yes AJ Brown.

Speaker: I hope Antonio Brown does not make a comeback. Is that what I said? He's live on it. How many beers have we had? It's been a long day, fellas. We've been out in the heat since like 8 in the morning. It's been a long day. almost passed out once. AJPX, dogs at the Z, and Pop has got the friggin' slot on stranglehold until further notice. I expect his snap share to go way up because he's been with the ones the whole entire time.

Speaker: I don't expect that to change. I think his snap share is going to skyrocket this season. i don't think you three have been asked questions today. Fire away. Give me the past 21 days now, your most your biggest take this patch training camp so far.

Speaker: what are you What have you guys been focusing on, and who's your number one player right now? Yeah, so, I mean, we talked about a bunch today, but, you know, AJ Brown is obviously the name that gets circulated the most. You know, AJ Brown brings the most juice, most aura. It sets the team apart.

Speaker: He stands out on the field. He's, he he I mean, you watch the game, you're like, who the fuck is that? Like, he he literally stands out every time. And Dobbs, I think Dobbs, too, like in the red zone, he's really good. But Brown everywhere. And so, like, talent-wise, like, he's he's incredible. And so it really, like, elevates, it just elevates the room.

Speaker: You know, so that that's that's what I like. What I like watching and what I'm most focused on is not the starters. This team has all established starters. Like if anybody's still wondering who's starting on this team, you know, just go look at like ESPN's depth chart. It's very clear who's starting. What is very unclear about this team is that bottom half of the roster. They have 90 men down there, 53 make it. I'm interested in like numbers 40 to 53. Those are the ones I find interesting. That's like what camp's for, right? Like I know Tully said everybody's fighting for a job.

Speaker: yeah Yeah, that's true. But Drake May's not. AJ Brown's not. Marcus Jones. I mean, there's like, I could go through a list of like 15, 20 people who are absolutely just not fighting for a job. Who is fighting for a job? Woods, Bildor, Prunty. That's exciting to watch.

Speaker: Jam Miller versus the two veteran running backs that they just brought in. Gonzo being out there, not being out there. Just, you know, like I learned today that ah downing the wide receiver coach as a prayer walk before every practice and like what I have been coming here forever and seeing him do his walk forever. But understanding that. So those are the things I like getting from training camp. A couple of the names I mentioned earlier, Pronte Jacobs. I think those are some names that you might see at the bottom of the roster, make this roster and actually have an impact. My breakout players, Durden divisions is Eli Ponder. And I really like both of those names.

Speaker: So going go, I got two different angles here they're not training camp related, but one of the things I'm most excited about this season is the Patriots running game. And it sounds kind of weird with AJ Brown in town. And, you know, we've seen what AJ Brown brings to the team, but like AJ Brown is a blocker.

Speaker: Romeo Dobbs is a blocker. Gilliam, ABT, right? All these guys that we have, I just, I, I'm looking at it and going, we're going to just run over teams a lot. Like it's going to happen. Like we're going to have games. We run for 200 yards. It's going to happen a lot.

Speaker: And so that's one thing. And then the second thing we've talked about it in various podcasts is the second year of Craig Woodson, a side yard. So when it comes down to it, right, Craig Woodson last year played probably had to have played the most snaps of a rookie period. right I don't know. I can't think anybody else. 91% snap share. Woodson's made the most snaps on the defense, I'm sure. defense, but then as a rookie, period, across the whole NFL.

Speaker: So you look at Craig Woodson and you say, you're next to Kevin Bayard, who is a perennial all-pro, and now you're just gonna learn from him, and you're going to take another step forward. Speaker: Sometime before week one. Okay. That's my guess. I mean, because him and Witherspoon have the same agent, and they'll wait on Witherspoon to sign his contract, so we know now know what he wants to get.

Speaker: It could be like a dollar more than what he got. Fitz, he made a good point too. He's like, can Gonzo really get that much more than Spoon? Wouldn't Spoon be mad at his agent for just going to get Gonzo a whole bag more? That was a great point. Right.

Speaker: I think, well, just to allude to that again, like we had a certain reporter in Boston say that he wanted something like 18% of the cap, which is false. That's because that's like $54 million. That's obviously not true. um So, I mean, maybe he misspoke and it was like 12% of the cap, which is like 36 mil a year, which is a lot higher. You know, that's that's like 10% higher than Spoon, basically. So, again, like someone like Witherspoon is ah is an incredible player, but like...

Speaker: I don't see how with the framework in place like this, the deal doesn't get done before the season. He's going to get signed, and that just goes to show how much like you guys are doing stuff better than traditional media. Half these guys were laid off from traditional media outlets, radio, Boston Globe. You guys know more ball than these guys, and they're just guessing the throwing stuff out there. It's absolutely amazing.

Speaker: well it the clicks in in In Boston, on engagement farm that's all they're trying to do yeah in boston we have you know half of it is people who take themselves really really, really seriously, like certain reporters.

Speaker: And certain people just say shit to make people angry. And that's literally, it's like half the media split in two. All I'd say, if you're going to say some shit, just take accountability for what you're saying. Can I name drop reporters on here? Yeah, yeah. For like Greg Bedard, for example, right? When we drafted Gronk, he said that he wasn't high on him at all. I think reporters should not state their opinions and just do their job, which is report, and cover the team

You were on my pod saying there's a roster battle going on there. i mean, and given the fact that A.J. Brown's off the team, you know everyone slides up, but who are you like?

Speaker: Yeah, so if Wicks, Makai, and Smitty get the first three and they keep five or six wide receivers, that's what we were talking about. it's They've got Darius Cooper, who they really like. They've got Hollywood Brown. They've got Eliza Moore. He had a big catch today, Hollywood, right? Touchdown in the end zone?

Speaker: Yeah, so they they almost have like five or six guys for two spots. and And every time I've seen them at practice, they have different people out there. So the they don't have a clean operation. They don't know what they're doing. like It's long term again.

Speaker: They're going to be great. It's going to look like the Niners or the Packers. They're going to have lot of guys with 700, 800 yards. But, like, right now, it's, like, a really figuring-out period, and it's kind of tough to watch. So not seeing you on Valentine's Day? Is that the take?

Speaker: No, no. I think but so so the Eagles were really good in the beginning a season last year. and They beat the Chiefs if they are already beating the Super Bowl and things like that And they were good in the first four or five weeks the season. And then the real like drama and the culture when it gets deep in November, December. and Shit gets real. It gets real. That's when it doesn't matter if you have the best players, you have the best culture. And yeah.

Speaker: That's where I want worry about the past little bit is the schedule the season is much harder Does is a day round such a cool or see disruption for you guys? I think that the first five weeks of the season is walk through people What does it look like like in the winter the Eagles second the first five six weeks of season they're gonna look absolutely really rough but i think long-term it'll help do they have a We have a tough beginning of our schedule. If they progress the season and like they're like that fringe wild card not in the playoffs or like are they bad early and then go on a run and win like eight niggas. think that's the Eagles like potential this year. Where I wear the Patriots is the four is like amazing. They're going to really good for a second, five, six weeks. But like you don't know, your guys' twos are literally like born and like booty are like guys that you can use.

Speaker: So um when it comes to the Eagles, are you worried about this first year? Two part question. are you worried about this new offensive coordinator and putting a lot of pressure on guys like Eli Stowers and Makai Lemon?

Speaker: um Also, second part of the question, why is Greg Bedard a disingenuous troll? you Craig Bidard. That was a question. We'll kick that over to Savage once you're done with the first part. This Philly guy's like, who the hell is that guy?

Speaker: No, i honestly, I worked in media my whole life. And like they, for years, they did not allow people to have social media because they thought it was a competition. These are guys that are on radio seasons that have six million listeners. On an off-season on day like today, they may have a few thousand or two weeks. These guys have like 100 followers.
